the Rio Novo community in the Rio Iriri Extractive Reserve has overcome certification and infrastructure barriers to bring Brazilian fruits and nuts to local and international markets
a powerful example of sustainable development as Brazil prepares to host COP30
"Brazil's Constitution equally binds the country to be governed in its international relations by principles that include 'cooperation among peoples for the progress of humanity.' This fundamental principle will guide the incoming presidency of COP30 – not only because Brazilian diplomacy is constitutionally bound by it
but because it has the firm conviction that there is no future progress for humanity without deep
and sustained cooperation among our peoples."
Rio Novo harvested Brazil nuts and fruits for local consumption but lacked certifications and market access to sell them widely
HIH — known locally as SAMA HIH — provided critical support
HIH also partnered with local communities and Indigenous groups
to tap into the Food Acquisition Policy (PAA) that helps small businesses and farmers sell products for things like school meals
Since the mini factory is located in a remote area
making these policies work can be quite tricky
but after organizing and supporting local producers
negotiating with the government and coordinating meetings
the community and the government program is enabling the community to sell food to schools in their own community nearby
Rio Novo's certified products supply local school meal programs and international brands like Dengo
which uses their dehydrated nuts in chocolate
The initiative has created new income opportunities
and helped protect the rainforest from illegal logging
It generates approximately BRL 275,000 in annual revenue
benefiting more than 500 people and helping preserve Brazil's Amazon rainforest biodiversity
"This initiative puts the Rio Novo community in control of their own future
local families lead every step—from harvesting to sales—ensuring fair prices and sustainable resource management," said Daniel Tiberio Luz
Brazil Country Director for Health In Harmony
"By creating their own market opportunities
they are achieving self-sufficiency while protecting the forest for future generations."
Currently producing about five tons of Brazil nuts annually
Rio Novo now aims to expand into global markets
will focus on increasing the community's autonomy by setting their sights on commercializing handicrafts and renewing their Food Acquisition Policy certification next year
"SAMA HIH's support has transformed our ability to sustain our community and protect our environment," said Raimunda Rodrigues
"With new certifications and infrastructure
we can access new markets while preserving the forest
It means everything to us to protect our way of life and safeguard the Amazon."
"It refers to a community coming together to work on a shared task
By sharing this invaluable ancestral wisdom and social technology
the incoming COP30 presidency invites the international community to join Brazil in a global 'mutirão' against climate change
a global effort of cooperation among peoples for the progress of humanity."

We caught up with Northern Irish photographer William Rice ahead of the release of his first photobook—a masterful and heartwarming representation of Rio de Janeiro’s youth and queerness
Ash Wednesday also happens to be the official day to celebrate love and loved ones
But on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean
the Christian holy day has a different meaning
Brazil is wrapping up the last day of its legendary Carnival weekend
might come across as a destination big party
drenched in little-to-no-clothes partygoers
saturated tailfeathers and never-ending layers of glitter
or those who are interested in cracking the shells of stereotypes to experience tradition
the celebration is an ode to an idealistic life with no repressions
the fluidity of the human experience and a non-age related side of youth
a time for cultural appreciation and re-connection with our roots
a place for encounters and social activism
when talking about my country and Carnival to someone who’s never stepped their feet in the sands of Copacabana beach
I commonly find my vocabulary empty of synonyms for… fun
I’m convinced that Brazilians learned how to experience life differently than other countries and cultures
always ready to make the best out of any situation
And Carnival might be when all this energy surfaces and channels its epitome
there’s a spine-chilling general sense of connection between the thousands that take to the streets from dawn to dusk
following crowds with unknown destinations
sweatiest and most genuine form of happiness
But as I connected with Northern Irish photographer William Rice
ahead of the release of his photography book
was someone that understood what I was talking about with ease
After over 20 years of working in the music industry acting as a consultant to Sinead O’Connor
William embarked on a five-year journey across the globe in which he repeatedly travelled to Rio De Janeiro
Rice himself had a lot to teach me about a side of my country that I’m not as familiar with
From the steep hikes to the Sugarloaf mountain and the juiciest tropical fruits to the sticky floors of one of the world’s biggest gay nightclubs
he encountered in the Carioca capital a fascinating life
was similar to the reality he experienced himself as a queer teenager growing up in the most turbulent of times in 1980’s Ireland
in a time when Brazil was under the government of hard right populist president Jair Bolsonaro
one of the most pro-actively homophobic and transphobic leaders in the world
soulful and heartwarming portrait of Rio’s juxtapositions
such as stylist Rafaela Pinah and fellow photographer Rodrigo Oliveira
he constructs a layered tale around the intersection between sexuality
bringing to the forefront of his lens what makes the best of Brazil: its people
Keep scrolling to read our conversation with William Rice…
The Irish countryside is very green and flat
but it’s the polar opposite of Brazil
I thought it just looked like another planet
But I didn’t really think too much more about it and it just kind of slipped the back of my mind
one of whom had a Brazilian boyfriend based in the UK
and asked me to come along and I went along
And I was in a very long time and I really
A very kind of particular way of life there that’s very unique
I think it is unique even in terms of the rest of Brazil
There’s a very specific way of living that you have in a beach city
And it’s obviously incredibly diverse and just kind of like a generally exciting place to go
so obviously the weather was incredible and it was really kind of just really exciting to be there
It just felt great to be there and it felt really happy and uplifting
or documentaries that were set in the favelas
So there were kind of very specific clichés about Rio
which were coming across in the Western world
So the Western media and the British media
and those clichés aren’t specific to Brazil
Every country around the world is shown in a certain way in Western media
but I was really taken aback by just how real Rio was and how vast it was and how much more to it there was than the kind of specific things that we’d seen in our culture here and how kind of clichéd and limiting those things were
So the initial trip was very eye-opening for me
And I think that kind of really hooked me into wanting to know more about it
to go travelling and Rio was the first place I went
I was using it as a base to kind of travel around South America
Because you can get easy flights from London
so I could get quite cheap flights there as well
I was travelling around the rest of Brazil as much as I could
obviously Sao Paulo and places like Manaus
I’d kind of… It’s hard to explain
It kind of gets under your skin a little bit
there’s a very special feeling there
it’s really beautiful and kind of melancholy and it kind of gets into your soul a little bit
but very specifically just to Rio and sometimes spending maybe two or three months there at a time
I don’t even know where to start with the reasons I like it and the reasons I started photographing there
And it’s the smallest details that I love
It’s like going into a supermarket and just seeing a huge row of papayas or something
Or you go along a couple more shops and there’s like a fish
somewhere selling fish and there’s like amazing fresh seafood
And there’s kind of a noise on the street there and in the morning everyone’s getting coffee and breakfast and going to work
it takes a few times to kind of dig a bit deeper and learn about those and educate yourself about those and kind of understand them
It’s so easy to go in there and say to someone
But I was very conscious about not working in that way
So even the pictures which seem quite stylized or look quite artistic
they’re actually more like documentary images
because really what I’m doing is I’m just holding the camera
And I’m really trying to encourage everyone who’s in the photograph just to be themselves
I don’t think there are any pictures where I told people what to do
Maybe there would be some light suggestions
But it was really about just getting people together and trying to capture them
both let them be themselves and capture who they really were
but also trying to still bring the environment into that
how people express themselves is very different
I think another thing that was on my mind during the taking of all of these photographs was the political situation in Brazil
There’s a lot of queer people in the pictures
and this wasn’t a good time to be queer or gay or transgender in Brazil
It was like watching Trump in a sort of South American mirror
And all kinds of really horrible invocations of religion and sanctimony and a certain kind of an underlying message that if you want to go out and hit a queer person
but you could just feel that kind of in the language
But it’s very… it’s a complicated feeling because you want to give people sort of pride and agency in their looks and let them be themselves
you want to reflect the kind of realities of their life
whilst also not making or not playing into any narratives of like
downtrodden queer people,” or “it’s dangerous to be transgender,” none of which are true
I think you said something really insightful at the beginning
but they’re not going to let it stop them doing anything
And I think I kind of wish I’d had that advice before going there because
It’s like everyone in these pictures is being themselves
and actually it’s hard to articulate this
but like half of them is very aware of this shitty political situation and the other half of them doesn’t give a fuck about it
I hope there’s some hint of that in the pictures
I want to shoot thoughtfully and respectfully
So I think someone standing on the street as themselves or someone wearing what they want to wear or presenting their hair and makeup how they want to present it
I began to realise that actually there were quite a lot of similarities
So I grew up being gay in a very religious and very political environment
there are a lot of very progressive politicians in Brazil
And you’ve got a progressive president now or a relatively progressive president who really speaks up for everyone
I would say Brazil is slightly more polarised
it didn’t matter if you were Protestant or Catholic
But the thing which I connected to most in Brazil was this sort of weird place where politics and religion mix
So you have organised religion and organised politics kind of working with each other and feeding off each other
And they each have agendas and they each want to try and manipulate people and get either their votes or their money
and this is very similar to Northern Ireland
is that any kind of minority becomes a pawn in those games
and politics and religion will work together to try and exploit those minorities in order to get the most amount of votes or the most amount of money they can
I find that I could kind of relate to it a little bit
I also think there’s some themes of escapism in the book
and then probably a lot of those people having to go to church on Sunday morning
the idea that you might escape on a Saturday night
but then have to go in and pretend you were someone else on a Sunday morning
I think politics and religion were kind of this… and I didn’t really realise that until I’ve been taking pictures for a while
and then you just watch people live their lives
I think that’s why I began to shoot more and more queer people
And you want to try and find some common ground before making photographs with people
And I think that was the common ground I found that allowed me to go in with a bit more confidence to make these pictures
just literally just walking around the streets
when I first did like a producer shoot there
There’s one picture of two guys with Ipanema in the background
I didn’t even think I was a photographer
I just bought a camera at the airport and started taking really casual pictures
So that early stuff was very kind of naive and touristy and yeah
They’re so expressive and very flamboyant
sometimes really hyper-religious and almost scary
They have these terrifying-looking monuments
And they’re really interesting places to shoot
Then I started getting a little bit more adventurous in the other parts of Rio
because I think another thing which I didn’t realise initially was just how vast the actual city limits of Rio are
And that you can drive one hour in any direction and you’re still actually inside the city of Rio
Just exploring the city a lot more and going to places that were maybe a little bit less off the beaten track
And each time just kind of pushing myself a little bit more to go a little bit further with it
And that’s the end result in the book
She was such a privilege to work with and helped produce those amazing images
I think it’s really incredible that it
to keep it all slightly more real and away from those kind of traditional images of Brazil and Brazilian models that we even still see in like fashion magazines
they’re all street casting and friends of friends
that’s a typical example of how I really was just holding the camera
It’s just like these incredible people dressed up by these incredible other creatives
I actually wanted to ask you about that because a lot of the collaborators that you brought to this project are Brazilians
How important was it for you to bring on these creative forces from the country to the project as well
Do you think that added to the way you wanted to represent Rio
if I hadn’t found those people like Rodrigo
there’s another really fantastic art director in Brazil called Pedro Flutt
And it was through them that I found people to shoot
some of the stuff that’s on the beach
There’s like a picture of a guy who’s wearing a headpiece made out of can ring-pulls
I’m the only non-Brazilian person involved in these pictures in any shape or form
very often the only people who are Brazilian are the models
So it’s like they’ll work with the models and they’ll use them
very kind of narrow view of what someone in Brazil looks like
they come from North America and they come from Europe
And I don’t want to denigrate that because I understand that it brings work and money and may lead to opportunities for the models
if I hadn’t been able to find the people that are in the book
The only way to be authentic is to create these kinds of spaces for them
So people from the world that I was most interested in could express themselves

Banksy's Migrant Child mural (2019) shown in a damaged state last year
Banksy’s Migrant Child (2019) mural in Venice will be restored, it has been announced, amid arguments that it should be left to gradually deteriorate.
Vittorio Sgarbi, an undersecretary in Italy's culture ministry, released a statement saying that the restoration will be funded by an “important bank”. He was due to divulge further details in a press conference on Wednesday but it was cancelled without explanation just hours before it was due to begin. Sgarbi’s office told The Art Newspaper that the restoration was still going ahead.
The mural is displayed on the wall of a historic building lining the Rio Novo canal near Campo San Pantalon in Venice’s Dorsoduro district. It shows a child holding a flare in her hand and wearing a life vest slightly above the waterline.
Created overnight between 8 and 9 May 2019, the mural is one of just two by Banksy in Italian cities. The other, a 2010 work on the side of a building in Naples, shows a Renaissance-style Madonna with her arms outstretched and a pistol suspended above her head.
Migrant Child, a big tourist attraction, has badly deteriorated due to excessive damp over the past four years. Sgarbi said in a statement that Luigi Brugnaro, Venice’s mayor, first drew his attention to the fact that the work was fading.
However, the question of whether or not to restore it has divided opinion. “I would be inclined to say the work should be detached from the wall, protected and exhibited in safe conditions,” Marco Goldin, an art critic for a number of Italian dailies, told newspaper Corriere del Veneto.
“Street art is transient,” Italian street artist Alex Ermini said. “Seeing time ruining the surface and creating a patina makes it more poetic.”
Sgarbi noted that because the work is less than 70 years old the local sovrintendenza, the state body that oversees heritage protection, does not have the final say on its fate.
“I take the responsibility for this restoration given that contemporary art is part of my remit, and it is my job to protect it,” Sgarbi said in the statement.“We’re not interested in... whether the artist is alive or even if he gives us his permission to conduct the restoration, given that, among other things, the mural was created illegally,” he added.
The owner of the listed building on which the work is displayed has been notified of the imminent restoration.
“We hope that the work can remain in place while it is being restored [so] it can be enjoyed in the place chosen by the artist,” Jacopo Molina, the owner’s lawyer, told Corriere del Veneto. “It is good that the ministry has taken this stance.”
"Just as Banksy has created a new language that goes straight to the hearts and minds of young people and all of us...we have a responsibility in the collaboration between public and private institutions to preserve art and culture in Venice," said Ernesto Fürstenberg Fassio, the president of Banca Ifis.

Among the streets and canals of the Dorsoduro neighbourhood lies the NH Venezia Rio Novo
a 4-star NH Hotel Group establishment where the history of film-making melds with that of Venice to create a unique experience
The hotel is located in an historical building built between 1957 and 1960
inspired by famous architects such as Angelo Scattolin
It is an example of the rationalist architecture movement in Italy
characterised by clean lines and geometric shapes
Its design was conceptually framed by the world of cinema and its deep connection with the city
the NH Venezia Rio Novo is characterised by furnishings and design features that evoke the film-making realm: cinematographic props
photographs and iconic films from Italy's archives
That bond is clear from as soon as one enters the reception where a small specialised library replete with autographed journals and books welcomes the hotel's guests
Photographs of famous directors and actors decorate the various common areas
offering up a unique way of discovering Venice through the movies
including five junior suites and another 53 rooms with views over the bell towers and Sestiere canal in the Dorsoduro neighbourhood
provide a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere thanks to
attention to detail coupled with warm hues (white
the latter thanks to the Electa armchairs by Calligaris)
One of the hotel's most endearing features is its small but enchanting garden
A genuine surprise and a rarity in a city like Venice: open to the public
this garden beside the hotel entrance is an ideal place for getting to know the city from a fresh perspective
enjoy a pre-meal drink or even - in the near future - watch a film outdoors
The NH Venezia Rio Novo also offers the possibility of organising private or business events
thanks to its meetings proposition: the four meeting areas - named Visconti
De Sica and Fellini - lend themselves perfectly to personalisation and scaling up or down to suit each customer's needs
there is scope for expanding beyond their 40 square metres to accommodate up to 130 people
for those with energy left to exercise after a day wandering the city's streets and canals
there is a small fitness area equipped with Technogym machines
Hotel guests can access the gym for free between 7am and 9pm

In Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul, an organization called Adventist Solidarity Action is collaborating with an ADRA Distribution Center to aid families impacted by the recent flooding in the region. According to the Adventist News Network
this center serves as a hub for nationwide donations
distributing essential items such as clothes
and hygiene kits through local Adventist churches
when the center received letters of solidarity from fourth-grade students of Escola Municipal Cônego Vitor in Três Pontas
Born from classroom discussions about the disaster
teacher Lila Mendonça and her students sent messages and drawings expressing hope and support
In the article
Mendonça described how the letters and donations came from her students wanting to discuss what they had seen on the news:
“They talked a lot about the rescues
They said that many people lost everything
can we help?’ And then we talked and agreed that whoever could
You should’ve seen their joy in bringing the donations from home!”
Many letters contained drawings of helicopters saving people from the water
along with words of encouragement and hope
complemented by donations from family and friends
deeply moved both the recipients and volunteers at the ADRA center

“The conservation and restoration of a public artwork
which is so important worldwide,” said Ernesto Fürstenberg Fassio
“becomes even more important for the preservation of the communication content that the artist wants to convey through his artwork
Just as Banksy has created a new language that reaches straight to the hearts and minds of children and all of us

through the expression of this extraordinary art on public land
we have a responsibility in the collaboration between public and private institutions to preserve art and culture in Venice.”
The Migrant Child is one of only two works by Banksy and is deteriorating fromhumidity, high water and salt spray
it has already had loss of detail and color fall off
Thus a lively debate has arisen around whether or not the work should be restored
since the project is divisive: on the one hand there are supporters of the artist’s wishes
who would prefer that the work be left to the elements as it is destined to disappear
while on the other hand there are those who are for preservation and argue that theBanksy’s work
would no longer be in his possession (although the copyright issue is actually complex
A summary of the positions of those opposed to the restoration was expressed in recent days by theVenetian Architects’ Association
which expressed its opposition to the restoration project
opposing the argument that the idea behind the graffiti “is that in time it will be submerged by water and will
come to the same end as the many children who have died in the Mediterranean over the last ten years” (so the architects)
Banksy’s works “are in fact born to be exposed to the elements
resulting in deterioration and natural destruction,” the architects added
“This is the meaning that also emerges from this work by Banksy
who is a political activist working to awaken the consciences
or perhaps it would be better to say the unconsciences
those who advocate a position against restoration stress the need to respect the meaning of the work as well as its transience
which is in line with the original message of the Migrant Child
Undersecretary Sgarbi instead outlined the position of those who support the need for intervention
The discussion also arose from the fact that the Superintendence of Venice cannot take charge of the restoration
since it is the work of a living artist (the law in fact protects only works older than seventy years)
the Cultural Heritage Code assigns to the competent superintendence the protection over works older than seventy years
And this is the case regardless of whether the work
the restoration of which therefore falls under the superintendence’s jurisdiction
“That limit of 70 years actually does not put the Superintendency in a position to act directly
much less with public resources,” explained the superintendent of Venice
“It would be important,” he added
“for an initiative to start for a correction of the Code of Cultural Heritage and Landscape on this particular issue
The paradox is that works like this become cultural heritage only when they are kept inside a public museum.” At the time
Banksy’s painting was the subject of a complaint by the then superintendent of Venice
who reported to the Public Prosecutor’s Office what was in fact an illicit act on Banksy’s part
on a par with the vandalism of those who deface the facades of historic buildings: on the part of the Venice Superintendency it was a due act
considered a positive conclusion by both Sgarbi and Magani
signed a note indicating the interest in the work and thus
unrelated to the building’s bond (a bond that
becomes a sort of protective element for the work
since the bond “embraces and encompasses the painting”)
the task of the Ministry is to indicate a vision and a direction: in this case
the direction indicated by the undersecretary is that of conservation
despite the fact that the competent superintendency cannot actually intervene
This made it necessary to intercession with a private party willing to take charge of the restoration (which Sgarbi
we are faced with a case of a work illegally carried out on a private building
is bound as an architectural asset of value
if the building’s owner decides to restore the painting
it is necessary to assess the fact that we are dealing with a building that has a long and complex history
and with an intervention by a contemporary artist who
no longer has any connection with a copyright
“Whoever acts abusively on a listed historic building,” Sgarbi said
“cannot expect someone to respect what he has not respected.”
The issue, as mentioned above, gets complicated here: indeed, Magani believes that Banksy can object to the rescue, since it is not a work purchased by the building’s property. Sgarbi, on the other hand, brings the example of the recent graffiti left on the selvage of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan
daubed last August by some writers and immediately cleaned up
“We are working on an abusive property
which we can consider erasing,” Sgarbi said
“so the fact is simple: there is no title of resistance
except that of the owners of the house who could say they are not interested in restoration
but even then the Superintendence could impose restoration because the building is dilapidated or has some need.” In this case
at least this is a problem that does not arise because the property
There is then another level of reading: in the collective consciousness
according to those who advocate restoration
the Ministry of Culture has a duty to take care of it
in the sense that it must show attention to that work by having it an obvious interest on the level of historical importance relative to contemporary creativity
is to save what can be saved and not to think about the fact that the philosophical or theoretical fate of the work is to be consumed because it was executed with this purpose in mind (“these are issues that concern Banksy’s abusiveness but not our need for protection,” Sgarbi said
adding that “therapeutic overkill is perfectly legitimate if you think about saving something that is in danger of possibly perishing”)
This is also confirmed by Angelo Piero Cappello
director general contemporary creativity of the Ministry of Culture
the preprogrammed perishability of the work is lost
because it is in the interest of the public party to intervene to enhance a public asset
“Faced with this change in the framework of an artistic expression that we used to call street art sits the role of the General Directorate of Contemporary Creativity
we have to take note that street art as it was born can no longer be called street art: it is an art form like any other
and therefore it has been admitted to legality
it has been sent to support urban recovery projects
it has even been invited to contribute to the enhancement of architectural heritage
and therefore all that context that allowed an artistic expression that arose from an abusive and illegal context to be considered marginal and marginalized
So if on the part of the Ministry the indication is to save Banksy’s work
the question remains as to how the restoration will be done
This is not only a “borderline” case from a legal point of view
but also from a purely technical point of view
Magani called the state of conservation of the building on which Banksy’s mural is located “disastrous.” To date
the Code of Cultural Heritage provides that in certain special situations
there is an authorization for possible detachment
plaque or inscription that you want to detach a cultural asset
but from the beginning our administration has provided a certain degree of protection for any detachment operations.” However
the environmental conditions of Venice (the presence of water
and salts that are also present in the walls of the building)
as well as the material conditions of the building
require a technical feat that is unprecedented in the history of detaching a work from a wall
according to the superintendent’s assessments: it is in fact a type of painting that
in addition to being present on a building in a precarious state of preservation
does not involve a classic path when it comes to detachment
“the desire is to have the asset remain in place
enhancing it as much as possible,” said attorney Molina
“It is a work that we believe goes beyond my assisted company
We believe that interventions like these also bring Venice into the contemporary
ensuring in this case the usability of the asset to all those who pass by in Rio Novo
in more peripheral areas of the city that are now being visited by people interested in seeing Banksy.” It is not certain
that this will be achieved: doing maintenance on site may be extremely difficult and may not produce the desired results
The mural may then be preserved in a museum (Sgarbi mentioned Ca’ Pesaro in Venice)
and could be replaced by a reproduction on the Campo San Pantalon building

Rio de Janeiro: A gunman wounded two people at Rio de Janeiro's main bus station Tuesday and held 17 passengers hostage for three hours before being convinced to surrender
There were scenes of panic as gunshots rang out in the afternoon at the Novo Rio station through which some 38,000 people pass daily
with buses headed for all regions of Brazil
Witnesses said a man opened fire before boarding the bus
they are safe," Colonel Marco Andrade of the military police announced about three hours after the crisis began
The surrender came after agents from the elite Special Operations Battalion (BOPE) unit were deployed to the scene for "conducting negotiations," according to police
Officers had cordoned off the station after evacuating all employees and passengers
who crowded in their hundreds outside while police tried to reason with the hostage-taker
Images broadcast by the Globo news channel showed agents escorting a man in a colorful pink T-shirt
green Bermuda shorts and short hair towards a police van after the incident as passengers exited the detained bus
including a young woman with a baby in her arms
The hostage-taker's identity has not be revealed
Rio state governor Claudio Castro praised the "exemplary" action of police in bringing the drama to a close
Televised images showed chaotic scenes at the station as fearful passengers scattered and a blue bus remained stationary in the middle of an empty parking lot
we don't know what will happen," one witness told Globo
In 2019 a hijacker armed with what turned out to be a fake gun held bus passengers hostage on a bridge outside the city for nearly four hours before being shot dead by police snipers
a similar incident left three people injured in the heart of Brazil's most iconic city
long plagued by high crime rates linked to poverty and inequality
a hostage-taker and a captive were killed in another bus hijacking that was broadcast live to a rapt audience and inspired the 2008 movie "Last Stop 174."
