the Chilean blueberry industry is performing according to expectations
with a slight 8% increase to date compared to last year and an 8% decrease compared to the 2022-2023 season," says Ruy Barbosa
president of the Chilean Blueberry Committee
He added that the fruit sent so far has been within expectations from a quality standpoint
There has been a notable increase in Group 1 varieties
primarily new varieties with all the conditions to compete in any market
consists of varieties that require some consideration
"These varieties are still capable of competing if handled properly
which consists of varieties we do not recommend for export
as they cannot reach their destination in optimal condition."
Given the evolution of the Chilean blueberry industry
Barbosa added that they have seen "a greater emphasis on Group 1 varieties
He detailed that Group 1 includes new genetics
"such as the new varieties from Hortifrut and Fall Creek
which shows that the replacement of varieties is becoming a reality in Chile."
According to the president of the Chilean Blueberry Committee
He says the industry must "increase and speed up this replacement
But there’s a noticeable trend where exporters and producers are beginning to understand that variety replacement is necessary to compete in the future."
Regarding the traditional varieties classified within Groups 1 and 2
"but we need to be cautious and do it right."
most of the fruit shipped before Christmas had been sold
This affected the ideal harvest times and coincided with extremely high temperatures
and delays in ship departures started to cause problems
"this will be fruit that could be more delicate and will need to be moved with greater speed and care."
When asked about the difficulties faced during this campaign
this is one of the worst seasons we've experienced in logistics in Chile after the one we had during the pandemic."
"the entire Chilean industry focused on cherries."
"It seems to me that shipping companies prioritized cherries
which affected our ability to compete on equal terms; transporters
and the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) were overwhelmed by the huge volume of cherries that Chile had this season," said Barbosa
I don’t ignore the importance of this fruit
cherries account for almost 50% of all fruit exports from Chile
A concentration like the one cherries have today
is incredibly risky for the entire industry."
Barbosa argued that the logistical crisis was evident for blueberries
"Two major shipping companies intermittently shipped to the United States between weeks 52 and 4
the excuse was a strike that was supposedly going to take place
but the truth was that they didn’t have enough containers or CA storage
there have been issues with transshipment in Panama
which has caused uncertainty and delays in the arrival times of shipments."
He added that from a logistical standpoint
this season has been a real problem that has affected Chile's blueberry industry competitiveness
"I believe we need to review our export process
We need to be more competitive and agile in shipping our products
Our competitors are preparing better than we are
A clear example of that is the Chancay port in Peru
And we need shipping companies to offer better service because
the country's image is affected when we make excuses for why our fruit doesn’t arrive when our customers need it."
The challenges have not only been logistical
Barbosa pointed out that the market is becoming very complex regarding prices
the prices for Chilean blueberries are really bad."
He explained that this situation is mainly due to a higher supply from Peru
which has also overlapped more than in previous seasons with Chilean blueberries
Pruning delays caused this due to the El Niño phenomenon last year
they had a larger and later production that overlapped much more with the Chilean window."
"Chile is currently facing a complex situation because there is a greater supply of blueberries
which becomes even more difficult if we fail on the logistical front."
It is essential to examine the work being done in Chile concerning two relevant factors—logistics and prices
the leader of the Chilean Blueberry Committee stated
"Local producers are making an effort to compete against the larger supply and higher quality of Peruvian blueberries."
He added that all their efforts are hindered when faced with logistical problems
"We don’t have an adequate service to move our fruit and get it to market in good condition."
He called for an industry-wide review "because our sector is called Frutas de Chile (Fruits of Chile)
it’s not called Cerezas de Chile (Cherries of Chile)
and we all contribute to Frutas de Chile."
Ruy Barbosa’s analysis also included the destination markets for Chilean blueberries
where the largest volume has been sent to Europe
the Netherlands accounted for 40% and the United Kingdom for 7%
the United States is in second place with 37%
"With no alternatives to ship to the United States
many exporters were forced to send their blueberries to Europe." Barbosa added
"This will have consequences because much of that fruit didn’t have a clear program
and some lots likely didn’t have the conditions for a longer journey
The Chilean blueberry industry has been seeking profitability
"It’s not easy to face the law of supply and demand
The volume from Peru undoubtedly impacts the other blueberry-producing countries
needs to make an additional effort in terms of promotions."
When Chile was the world’s top blueberry exporter
made significant promotional efforts in the major markets around the world to introduce blueberries
as Peru is the largest exporter of blueberries
and start investing heavily in promotion."
He explained that blueberry consumption is rising globally
additional promotion and marketing efforts are necessary to move that larger volume with minimal impact on price
"If serious promotional efforts are not made
the excess supply will continue to push prices downward
affecting the profitability of all producers."
He said Chilean organic blueberries are highly sought after in markets
"Requiring a high level of specialization from certain supermarket chains
which means there are boundaries to consider when deciding to pursue this type of production."
If you look specifically at the price from week 3 onward
it will be very good until the end of the season
during the peak season in Peru (November-December)
the price of organic blueberries was nearly the same as that of conventional ones
He added that "organic blueberries have higher production costs
and not everyone can achieve optimal production levels
it’s important to understand that while they have a niche market that highlights them
this space doesn’t grow as quickly as we would like."
the president of the Chilean Blueberry Committee noted that for the Chinese importer
he explained that with the development of local blueberry production
it is likely that in the medium term they will have production all year round
He pointed out that "their production is concentrated between March and August
but due to the diversity of climates and the high technological advancement of their crops
they are also capable of producing during other months."
He added that local supply is mainly complemented by Peruvian
which has resulted in a permanent presence of blueberries in wholesale markets and major supermarkets in China
"This allows them to have constant movement
contributing to the profitability of their business because they have the product all year round," said Barbosa
The president of the Chilean Blueberry Committee views China’s growing role in the blueberry industry positively
"The fact that the Chinese are producing blueberries means that their enormous population will also get to know the product better and we’ll have higher consumption
"I am convinced that blueberries will become the most consumed fruit globally because they combine great adaptability to different regions and climates
and offer unmatched nutritional benefits."

Barbosa's Gucci gown featured dazzling crystal straps that elegantly adorned her shoulders, while the feather organza skirt added a touch of whimsy and movement to the overall look. The vibrant acid green hue, a signature color in Gucci's latest collection, proved to be a perfect choice for the young actress, highlighting her radiant complexion and dark, flowing locks.

For an EnduroGP racer used to the short tests
the three-hour GNCC race format is a big change in training
It is a fact brought home to Barbosa as he turned attentions back to the shorter tests in Northern Europe during July
the Team Phoenix Racing Honda rider has improved race after race to be consistently knocking on door of podium places
With the best result of a second place at the Mason Dixon GNCC
Ruy sits sixth in the XC2 class in his rookie season
It is a season the always confident Chilean rider is treating as a learning curve and move on to beat the Americans at their own game in 2022
Enduro21 caught up with Barbosa to find out just how different as he jumped back to GPs on Alex Salvini’s big Honda CRF450RX for two rounds in Estonia and Sweden
Ruy Barbosa: “I was at home in Chile packing things to go to Brasil for a race at the end of July
and I got a call from Alex Salvini asking me if I wanted to come to race two EnduroGP rounds – Estonia and Sweden – as a fill in rider for him
“I’m racing the GNCC this year
As you all know it’s a cross-country style championship with three-hour races where you pit to refuel twice
It’s quite different to the EnduroGP races here in Europe
“I accepted Salvini’s offer because I wanted to be back here (EnduroGP)
it has been my school and the series that has seen me grow as a rider
“I came to Europe and raced in Estonia
it was tough as I barely had time to test the bike and prep it
Then in Sweden I didn’t go as fast as I would like to but I was able to post even the second fastest time in some special test and I finished third in Junior 2 on Sunday
I was really happy to be back and meet everyone again and I want to thank Alex and his S2 Motorsport for this opportunity.”
I thought it would come easier because I train hard and my fitness level is good but my training is focused on resistance for the cross-country races
the big difference is that in GNCC you don't walk the route
The tracks are about 16 or 18 kilometres long
and you’re not as tired as here [GPs] before the race
We walked the special tests from Wednesday and for around seven or eight hours a day
“Another difference is GNCC runs for three hours full gas like it is a 30-minute motocross race
And we never worry about times since we compete against each other on the track
“Fighting inside the woods with other riders
and that often misleads you because you feel that you are going fast
but in reality you are going slower than you expected
“Coming back to GPs I found it hard to post fast times on the first day in Estonia
but then we talked witht the team and we made some small modifications for the Swedish GP on the front of the bike
I preferred that terrain over the one in Estonia [sandy]
I was able to attack to finish as high as I could
I managed to be on the podium on the second day.”
We always run between three hours and 15-20 minutes
we only do one hour motocross heats without stopping or a sprint-type training
with several 15-minute full gas heats one after the other
the type of training that we do in the US is focused on racing each other on the track
“It's something I wasn't used to before
that's why I did a lot of motocross to know how to overtake or how to feel when you have a rider behind
Those things helped me to adapt to this type of racing
It took me five races to get into the rhythm
Before that I would ride fast for two hours and in the last one the Americans would fly pass me.”
“In the eight and nineth races I have finished second and fourth
but I still have something in the tank for the last hour
Returning to EnduroGP has been hard because I felt like I was going fast
I had to go from riding at a 80% to a 110%
you have to go all out in the special tests in GPs
“That's why I tried to be more aggressive than normal in the second GP
I was trying to be the Ruy from the previous years
when I was the Youth World Champion in 2018
I'm a fighter and I gave all that I got these two weekends.”
“The truth is that now I have the GNCC as a priority and my expectations are to win the GNCC in the United States
but it will be a good experience for next year
when I will stay there to fight for the first place
I would like to return to EnduroGP in 2023 or 2024
“The Chilean Federation has not found enough financial support to race the ISDE in Italy
so we will not be there it as a national team
Let's see if we can do it next year…”

Ruy Barbosa or Northbay Chile has been appointed as the interim president of the Chilean Blueberry Committee following the departure of Felipe Silva last month
He will hold the position until a new president and board of directors is elected once the current season has concluded
Silva said his decision to leave was based on the need to dedicate more time to personal matters. “We want to thank Felipe Silva for his dedication
time and affection that he gave to the industry in his capacity as president of the Committee during the last four years,” the committee said in a statement
It also welcomed Barbosa and his “willingness to accept the position and work for the development of our industry.”
Barbosa takes the helm of the committee at a crucial time for the Chilean industry
which has struggled to adapt to the rise in global competition
Andres Armstrong said varietal replacement
along with proper agricultural management and productive and logistical efficiency are crucial to compete in today’s market
“It is not just about having good quality fruit – if we are not efficient it will be difficult to continue participating in the market,” Armstrong said
“We need to produce more kilos per hectare at lower costs
for example in developing varieties with lower water requirements
The committee has generated consensus among growers on leaving some varieties out of the supply of fresh blueberries for export due to their poor results at destination
This process has meant a decrease in Chile’s export volume
which fell from a peak of 117,000 tonnes in 2020/21 to 87,000 tonnes last season
Leaving varieties out along with the incorporation of new genetics has meant a gradual but consistent improvement of the varietal mix exported from Chile
the CBC has decided to implement a variety validation programme to give growers reliable
independent and public information on the behaviour of new varieties in the different parts the country
thereby reducing the risks associated with incorporating new genetics developed outside of Chile
Forecast for the 2023/24 point to an export crop of 76,500 tonnes of fresh blueberries

Ruy Barbosa will take a break from the EnduroGP World Championship
where he took the Youth world title in 2018
to avoid the long period of no racing due to the ongoing Covid crisis in Europe
The 2021 EnduroGP championship will not start until May and with that in mind Barbosa has taken the choice to stay in the Americas to compete this season
“My biggest goal is to win a world title again,” says Ruy
“But I will wait for everything to normalize
the team believes that running in the United States is the best alternative.”
The 22-year-old rider had already made the switch to Honda in 2021 and leaves behind his old team – the JET Zanardo Husqvarna led by Franco Myer. Ruy is expected to use the extended Honda Racing family to enrol in Phoenix Racing Honda and compete in the XC2 category of the Grand National Cross-Country and the US Sprint Enduro at the controls of a Honda CRF 250 RX

Switching world championship tests for the brutal three hours of cross-country racing at GNCC is quite a trade-off
as many GP riders who have tried will attest
and it will be interesting to see how the usually flamboyant Barbosa deals with the new discipline
The new US Sprint Enduro series will be more familiar.
Barbosa will join another new recruit to the Pheonix Racing Honda Team
Cody Barnes who moves from the Beta USA team this year alongside Tristan Landrum.
A post shared by Phoenix Racing Honda (@phxracinghonda)
Barbosa hopes to be able to travel to Europe this year to compete in the ISDE for his country from August 30 to September 4
in the Lombardy region. The 2021 GNCC season kicks-off on February 21 at Big Buck.

SYNOPSIS: With an engaging story featuring a captivating cast, “Totalmente Diva” is a modern fairytale that will win the audience’s heart right from the very beginning. After escaping sexual harassment by her own drunken stepfather, Eliza (Marina Ruy Barbosa) runs away from home with the help of her mother, Gilda (Leona Cavalli), to try her luck in the big city. Her ultimate dream is to provide a better life for her mother and siblings.
But life in the big city turns out to be harder than she had envisioned. After being robbed on her very first day there, Eliza ends up living in the streets. That is how she meets Jonatas (Felipe Simas), a young “street entrepreneur”, as he likes to be called while he looks after parking spaces and sells candy by traffic lights. Eliza starts selling flowers to make a living with his help and they both develop a true friendship destined to become the most beautiful love story.
In spite of having her career as a life priority, Carolina is eager to become a mother - particularly if it means for Arthur to be the father. Seduction and audacity play a key role in their turbulent relationship. The latest betting game they engage in sees Arthur risking his modeling agency, Excalibur, by taking on an almost impossible mission: transforming shabby flower girl Eliza into a model able to win the Totalmente Diva beauty contest.
As Eliza goes through a major makeover, Arthur falls madly in love with her. On the other hand, Eliza feels torn between Jonatas’ love and Arthur’s spell. Meanwhile, Carolina finds strength in this betrayal to win the bet and see the modeling agent dig in the dirt. In order to achieve this goal, she recruits Cassandra (Juliana Paiva), a contestant with no limits when it comes to sabotage her biggest opponent Eliza.
With over 30 million viewers in Brazil and Portugal, “Totalmente Diva” was a massive audience hit and a true lab of innovations. Shot partially in Australia and Uruguay and taking place within the fashion business, the telenovela is a romantic story about overcoming life’s obstacles.

The manufacturers of a new brand of luxury black toilet paper in Brazil have been accused of racism for using the slogan “Black is Beautiful” as part of an advertising campaign starring a famous white actress
The Personal VIP Black toilet paper was launched on Monday by Santher
with a glossy advertising campaign starring Marina Ruy Barbosa
blue-eyed actor who appears naked except for swaths of the black toilet paper
Black activists and commentators accused the company of appropriating the name of a cultural movement from the 1960s that spread around the world and was also used by South African anti-apartheid campaigner Steve Biko
“People died so that this expression could be revered until today. People continue dying and this expression is more important and vital than never before,” Rio-based writer Anderson França wrote on Facebook
“But in Brazil if you key in #blackisbeautiful you are going to find ass paper.”
França’s post was shared thousands of times as anger over the campaign spread across social media
“In Brazil #Blackisbeautiful is not a cause, now [it] is toilet paper. Where do black lives matter?” wrote one Twitter user
“We see racism in everything or are you conveniently blind?” tweeted another

Santher and Neogama – the São Paulo advertising agency responsible for the campaign – said that they regretted any offense caused
and removed the slogan from their campaign
a leading black lawyer in Rio who chairs the National Truth Commission of Black Slavery in Brazil
said the controversy was the latest in a string of incidents involving Brazil’s advertising industry
“When these adverts suggest this type of subliminal racism they should be removed
because they reinforce the teaching of racism,” Adami said
