Chef Joseph Salgueiro is shooting for the stars at SŌ Restaurant — a Michelin star to be exact
Salgueiro came back on as executive chef and managing partner in September 2024
His background in fine dining goes back decades to the Big Apple
where he worked at various fine dining establishments
he worked with people from all over the world and learned to make all types of international cuisine
which inspires the “American nu cuisine” he creates at SŌ
he moved to Arkansas and worked first at the Capital Bar & Grill in Little Rock before moving into an executive chef role at Maumelle Country Club and
to Capriccio Grill at the former Peabody Hotel in Little Rock
He was first drawn to SŌ because it reminded him of a specific restaurant
in New York at a time when he was feeling homesick
The owners told him they modeled it with that place in mind
He worked as executive chef there from the opening in 2006 through about the first eight months
after a hiatus from SŌ that took him to 1620 Savoy
Cache Restaurant and Pleasant Valley Country Club
Even before the owner came to him with the idea of returning
Salgueiro happened to have been developing a new menu
and I started building this menu,” he said
He answered that he was making a menu for himself
“What we’re trying to do is we want to be more higher end than the fine-dining restaurants that are happening right now,” he said
“This is why I feel this would be the best place
for business people to come here and not just entertain their clients but also to impress them — not just with the food but with our service.”
If one is not sure where to host their next corporate shindig or take an important client
The restaurant has many different spaces to entertain
an intimate wine room and an outdoor patio
He offers four prix fixe menus at varying prices points
from $80 to the “CEO prix fixe menu” which sits at $195
The CEO menu includes decadent options such as a morton-brady smoked duck salad
a 1-pound lobster and a vanilla creme brulee or Belgian chocolate lava cake to finish
Salgueiro is also happy to sit down with clients and customize menus for events
“You get a real local warmth when you walk in here,” he said
“We’re working on high-end food and fine dining
My final goals are trying to get a Michelin star and James Beard Award
Visit the restaurant at 3610 Kavanaugh Blvd
in Little Rock or call 501-663-1464 for more information

You have reached the limit for gifting for this month
January 5th is the date marked in the calendar for kids choking for their next cigarette but thwarted by the fact they’re often at least a decade too young to buy them legally
with the annual celebration of Epiphany used to celebrate the three wise men who went and gifted young Jesus his very first birthday presents
offering that it’s a tradition passed down by centuries with deep ties to Christianity and the winter solstice
even if nobody seems entirely sure why it’s evolved into parents buying packets of cigarettes for their offspring and then encouraging them to fire one up
but images of tiny little folks smoking in the streets were always going to be the ones that gained the most external attention
Epiphany kicks off on a Friday and ends with a Saturday mass
with various festivities between those two points
and a local elected the designated ‘king’ for the year who dishes out booze and snacks
Even though the legal age for purchasing and ingesting tobacco products in Portugal is 18
the authorities are fully aware of what goes down each year in Vale de Salgueiro
but they let it slide based on the fact it’s a local custom that’s been in place for hundreds of years
resident Rui Sergio admitted that when he was growing up
“we were impatient for January 5th to arrive so we could smoke our cigarette,” so it’s not unreasonable to suggest Vale de Salgueiro may have a slightly higher percentage of local smokers
seeing as they’ve been raised on doing it since they were nippers
coffee shop owner Guilhermina Mateus couldn’t think of a reason other than “tradition” to hand over a ciggie to her young daughter
but she wasn’t concerned it would be the beginning of a lifelong addiction that can often be nightmarish to kick
“I cannot explain why; I see no harm in that because they do not really smoke; they inhale and expire immediately
making a point of clarifying that it doesn’t really count as smoking unless it’s inhaled
until the little ‘uns mark it down on their calendars that the moment they’ve all been waiting for is upon them once again
with the arrival of Epiphany bringing with it the promise of their next annual cigarette
Warning: SPOILERS for the Frasier Season 2 premiere
this cut of meat went through hell over the course of just minutes
and Keith and Salgueiro spoke to me about what it was like for them shooting that kooky and “very slimy” sequence
It was already bad enough with Frasier Crane getting angry at Alan over the role he played in convincing his son Freddy to drop out of Harvard and become a firefighter without informing him
which subsequently threatened to ruin Ham Day
the mere task of David needing to keep the ham pristine while his uncle was out was complicated when he and Eve decided to sample some of this delectable foodstuff from Spain
While covering the Frasier Season 2 junket on behalf of CinemaBlend
I asked Anders Keith what it was like for him shooting this portion of the episode that saw the ham being abused in many ways
I had to come in early some mornings and work on that ham
I lost a pair of pants because they were just so infused with grease
‘Cause we used a real ham is the thing
There were many different versions… I’m pushing it on the ground
you gotta make it landed perfectly in the middle of the cake.’ It takes real effort to do physical stuff like that
Frasier’s main characters got to enjoy samplings of the ham… once the glass was removed
While Jess Salgueiro was recalling the ham sequence
she noted how the show’s props master kindly took her vegetarianism into account
so they actually cut a little pocket in the ham and stuffed vegan cold cuts into it for me
which was very sweet of our props master Jim

'Ya Temi Xoa': how the black community and the Yanomami joined forces at Carnival 2024
telegram Join our Telegram channel! telegram
“Ya Temi Xoa” was the verse sung at the top of their lungs by the entire black community of Acadêmicos do Salgueiro accompanied by Yanomami leaders during a parade on Avenida Marquês de Sapucaí
which translated into Portuguese means “I'm still alive”
marked the samba plot “Hutukara” and now also gives its name to the documentary that premieres online this Monday (26/08).
The 20-minute short tells how the Amazon rainforest connected with the favelas of Rio de Janeiro by uniting the Yanomami and black people to make history
behind the scenes and the ideas that built the plot inspired by Hutukara - the sky that collapsed in Yanomami cosmology - which guaranteed Salgueiro 4th place
A partnership between the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA) and the Hutukara Associação Yanomami (HAY), under the direction of Thomas Mendel, Ya Temi Xoa had preview in Boa Vista
The event welcomed indigenous leaders and their partners from non-governmental organizations
journalists and supporters of the Yanomami cause
In the midst of a humanitarian tragedy, open to the world in January 2023
the Yanomami caught the attention of the samba school
With research and in-depth analysis of the work the fall from heaven by Davi Kopenawa and Bruce Albert
those responsible for the plot understood that the Yanomami had much more to show than a tragedy
“I spent three or four months reading a lot about the cosmology of the Yanomami people
but I say that what touched me most was seeing Davi's eyes”
Igor says that one of the efforts to create the parade was precisely not to put the Yanomami people in the position of “poor things”
The concept of the show was constructed from the perspective of extolling the cosmology and rich culture of these indigenous people
“The idea of Hutukara was to present the Yanomami people from the perspective of who they truly are and not from the perspective that non-indigenous society usually sees on television
Salgueiro was the third school to parade on the first night of presentations
13 other Yanomami leaders were present in the “For a Brazil Cocar” car
My Willow is the arrowPelo povo da florestaPois is lucky that our restIt's a Brazil headdress
the school asked Davi Kopenawa for assistance in the construction of the allegories
The shaman also participated in choosing the song that moved Salgueiro - receiving 10 out of all the judges in his respective requirement
“In this place they are working on something very important and they are doing a good job to help in our fight
I'm happy that they're working and doing things to look good and show it to the whole city”
says the shaman in an excerpt from the documentary that shows his visit to the samba school during preparations for the parade
Davi Kopenawa's real meeting with the people of Salgueiro took place months before the parade in Sapucaí
Davi was invited to be present at the samba selection final
There were 23 sambas registered talking about Hutukara and on that day one of them would be chosen to be sung on the avenue
a cultural center that preserves the community's Afro-Brazilian traditions
He was welcomed with a Jongo Dance performance
the school matriarchs sang and danced to welcome the Yanomami leader
Davi said that he was moved to see the women dancing and that they reminded him of his aunts
Davi spoke to many of them and learned about the work of the herbalists
women who know the plants that heal and who maintain a project to record and learn this knowledge for new generations
Davi said that he had been to Rio de Janeiro many times
that he had been taken to tourist attractions
but that this was the first time that he had met the people who built the city and who were later pushed to live on the hill
With several references to Yanomami cosmology
criticizing the false “good family” and remembering the indigenousist Bruno Pereira and the journalist Dom Phillips
beauty and resistance of the people of the largest Indigenous Land in Brazil on the first night of Rio de Janeiro Carnival
“Salgueiro will excite people on the avenue and show how important it is for us to take care of our land and its native peoples”
To package the samba school and the stands
Salgueiro took elements of the ancient knowledge of the Yanomami and told the story of the Hutukara
which in Yanomami cosmology represents the sky that collapsed
taking them to the plane in which they live today
“The Yanomami brought a cultural part that we were not aware of
They are very emphatic when saying 'Ya Temi Xoa' because they want to say that they are alive
that the forest is alive and I think the time has come for Brazil to understand these people who were here before colonization and who still have the strength to say 'we are alive '”
member of the official Amigos do Salgueiro fans
The identity of the Yanomami arrived on the avenue with preparation that began even before the parade
The indigenous people chose to use their traditional paintings
feathers and small fragments of arrows.
but we also have joy and need to be valued”
who in addition to being a teacher is president of the Association of Yanomami Kumirayoma Women (AMYK)
The Yanomami Indigenous Land faces a mining invasion and a health crisis
On January 21, 2023, less than a month after taking office, the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) visited Boa Vista and drew the world's attention to the high numbers of malaria and malnutrition cases among the Yanomami
a Public Health Emergency of National Importance (Espin) was established
Salgueiro announced “Hutukara” as the theme of its fashion show in 2024
once again drawing attention to the serious situation of the Yanomami.
“It’s very important and everything was very beautiful
It is very important that Salgueiro found the name of the Yanomami people
because this way we also found the black people who were also suffering”
summarized Kopenawa about the connection between the Amazon rainforest and the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in partnership between Salgueiro and the Hutukara Yanomami Association (HAY)

Jess Salgueiro initially wanted to be a dramatic actor
but she’s glad she found her way into comedy
”I see how important it is because I’m like
Making the sitcom turned out to be the hardest thing the Canadian actor has ever done and also 'the best job in the world'
Making the sitcom turned out to be the hardest thing the Canadian actor has ever done and also “the best job in the world”
Jess Salgueiro will admit it: she used to be a snob about sitcoms
“I did not expect to like doing a sitcom as much as I liked doing a sitcom,” said the Winnipeg-born actor
“I was probably a bit of a snob about multi-cam (shows) before I did it
I think I thought that the actors were just kind of doing a shtick or
‘That’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life.’”
Although Salgueiro has been a screen actor for more than a decade — most notably in the acclaimed Canadian comedy “Workin’ Moms” — “Frasier” represented a number of daunting firsts: first multi-camera comedy
first reboot (“of a show that people love”)
first time on the storied Paramount Pictures lot in Hollywood
And did we mention Kelsey Grammer and James Burrows
Salgueiro submitted a taped audition last December for the part of Eve
an aspiring actor and single mom who is the roommate of Frasier’s firefighter son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott) and
Frasier’s and Freddy’s neighbour
so Salgueiro put the audition out of her mind
Then she got a callback to read in person for the part in Los Angeles in January
“I’m kind of nervous because I haven’t been in an audition room for three years
right?” recalled Salgueiro — the COVID-19 pandemic had put a halt to in-person tryouts
“And then I look at my email and it’s a chemistry read with Kelsey Grammer
‘That’s not just a fun callback
And James Burrows is going to be in the room.’”
By coincidence, Salgueiro had just listened to an episode of the podcast “SmartLess” on which Burrows was a guest: the revered director has made more than 1,000 episodes of TV
among them much loved shows like “Cheers” (which he co-created)
“Taxi,” “Will & Grace,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and the original “Frasier.”
‘I wish I hadn’t listened to that,’ I was so intimidated,” Salgueiro recalled
he’s directed more episodes of television than anyone on the planet.”
“I don’t think of myself as a comedian and I had to go make people laugh,” said Salgueiro
You’re getting the feedback immediately
So that pressure alone was what made it really hard.”
the 30-something Salgueiro certainly wouldn’t have foreseen this fork in her career
She started out as a dancer but wanted to be an actor
She was attending the University of Winnipeg
when a fellow dance teacher recommended she try out for the Randolph College for the Performing Arts in Toronto
Salgueiro’s first acting jobs were in theatre
She and one of her Randolph teachers started a company
I didn’t really work in TV for a long time.”
That she pivoted to the small screen is thanks in part to fellow Canadian actor Benjamin Ayres
He and Salgueiro were doing a play together that was seen by the producers of the medical drama “Saving Hope,” in which Ayres played an ER surgeon
Ayres and Salgueiro were portraying lovers onstage so
when “Saving Hope” cast a love interest for Ayres’ Dr
“So I played his lover on ‘Saving Hope.’ Then we played lovers again on ‘The Good Doctor.’ Then we played lovers again in a movie called ‘Canadian Strain.’ It’s so funny; we just always end up playing these sort of toxic relationships,” laughed Salgueiro
“That was really my first time doing anything on TV … Even if I wasn’t doing much
I’m really grateful for that early gig.”
More gigs followed: vampire series “The Strain,” euthanasia drama “Mary Kills People,” hoser comedy “Letterkenny,” superhero satire “The Boys,” outer space drama “The Expanse,” ballet thriller “Tiny Pretty Things,” postapocalyptic drama “Y: The Last Man.”
Salgueiro is particularly grateful for her time on “Workin’ Moms,” the show for which she’s most often recognized in public
“Catherine Reitman (the series’ creator) gave me an opportunity to really create a character … And we built this strange
And people seemed to quite like that character — until she had an affair with the husband.”
She continued: “It was one of those gigs that I got to be in several episodes so it also helped build my confidence because
the way I feel about acting in front of a camera is that most of your job is trying to stay focused and relaxed amidst so much distraction and so much pressure
“You might have been waiting for 10 hours and all of a sudden they’re like
‘We need to get the shot in the next 15 minutes.’ You just met your scene partner who’s supposed to be your brother and you have no relationship
“So you need to find a way to be really calm and focused
the best way to strengthen that muscle has been just many
She’s also grateful to have found her way into comedy
“I was enamoured with the really deep
And I thought I was going to be onstage baring my soul all the time.” But then
“I just kept doing a bunch of comedies and I wasn’t fully conscious of the comedic resumé I was building
‘I love comedy.’ And if anything
I see how important it is because I’m like
make people smile.’ In this case (‘Frasier’)
“I have the best job in the world … it made me kind of fall more in love with comedy and made me way less
Salgueiro was decidedly complimentary about the people she worked with on “Frasier,” especially star
“I did not feel like he was our boss
He was so collaborative … he was so gracious and he was so tender because he was really grateful that he was getting a chance to do this again.”
Whether Grammer gets to keep making “Frasier” beyond the 10 episodes that debuted in the fall on Paramount Plus remains to be seen: a second season pickup hadn’t been announced when this story went to press
she just wants “to keep working with really great teams of people … I would love to be doing more film and I’d love to work with Canadian filmmakers
I’ve done a couple of features in the past two years that are kind of slowly rolling out now and had an absolute ball
So I just want to make movies with people I love and believe in and respect and

Salgueiro will focus on black Brazilian female writers as well as race
When Frasier Crane returned to screens in 2023
he did so without any of the supporting cast from his original series
"Frasier" ran for 11 seasons from 1993 to 2004
propelled not only by its lovably pompous protagonist but by a cast who seemed as though they were born to play the various supporting characters
From David Hyde Pierce as Frasier's brother
the series was boosted by one of the finest sitcom casts ever assembled
Throughout the 10-episode Paramount+ season
each of these characters were fleshed out in episodes that focused on everything from Freddy's hidden academic talents to Alan's surprising fondness for his old pal Frasier
But one character remained fairly underdeveloped throughout: Jess Salgueiro's Eve
If Paramount does greenlight a second season
especially since Salgueiro only recently gained some respect for the sitcom format
But aside from some hints that there might be a romantic future for her and Freddy
there's still a lot we don't know about Eve
we'll surely find out more about the character
who only gained a real appreciation for sitcom acting when she shot the pilot episode of the show
Speaking to The Toronto Star
the Winnipeg-born actor revealed she was actually quite snobby about multi-cam shows and sitcom actors before filming her first episode of "Frasier." As she put it:
"I did not expect to like doing a sitcom as much as I liked doing a sitcom
I was probably a bit of a snob about multi-cam (shows) before I did it
'This isn't elevated enough.' But then after my first episode
'That's the hardest thing I've ever done in my life.'"
I think it's fair to say that there's absolutely nothing wrong with sitcoms
sitcoms seem to occupy an especially beloved status among audiences
I don't necessarily feel the same warmth and fondness that I do when recalling time spent watching the original "Frasier." That's not to say "Frasier" is "better" per se
but just that we generally seem to feel more sentimental about sitcoms than other types of shows
We experience the characters in a way that makes it feel as if we know them personally
which was basically the selling point of the show on which "Frasier" first appeared — "Cheers."
That's why it's odd to hear Jess Salgueiro talking negatively about sitcoms. There's no doubt modern incarnations of the genre are pretty dire, but there's a long and dignified history of sitcoms of which Salgueiro should feel honored to be a part — even if it is in a show that's neither disappointing nor remarkable
much like her born-again co-star Kelsey Grammer
After recalling how she felt about sitcoms going into "Frasier" 2023
Jess Salgueiro went on to explain to The Star how the challenge of live performance helped change her mind:
"I don't think of myself as a comedian and I had to go make people laugh
So that pressure alone was what made it really hard."
"Frasier" isn't Salguerio's first time on a comedy show
as she previously appeared on the beloved Canadian comedy
"Letterkenny," albeit a show with a very different format for comedy TV
The actor went on to say that she "loves comedy," and seems like she not only developed an appreciation for the sitcom craft but for how these shows resonate with audiences
make people smile.' In this case ('Frasier')
it made me kind of fall more in love with comedy and made me way less
It's also worth remembering that far from just making people laugh
"Frasier" itself was genuinely affecting at times
The show was just as much about heart as it was humor
and there were numerous moments throughout the original series that transcended the situational comedy to become remarkably poignant — especially whenever John Mahoney got to display his acting chops
Let's hope if there is a season 2 of "Frasier" 2023 (Kelsey Grammer is particularly ambitious on that point)
it manages to recapture a little more of that aspect
On Wednesday 24th, over 90 civil society organizations and social movements sent an urgent appeal to the UN (United Nations) and to the IACHR (Inter-American Commission on Human Rights) condemning the massacre carried out by Military Police at the Salgueiro Complex in São Gonçalo (RJ) at the beginning of the week.
the organizations request that the Brazilian state be questioned on the violent incident which left at least nine people dead
as well as reparation and access to the investigations for the families of the victims and all those who have suffered violations.
the massacre had international repercussions and was harshly criticised by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights who called for an impartial
effective investigation by the Public Prosecutor´s Office
“This Office requests that the Public Prosecutor´s Office carry out a full
independent and effective investigation into these deaths
On the morning of Thursday 25th, the president of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Minister Luiz Fux, changed the order of the agendas awaiting ruling in the Court´s plenary session
is unlikely to be considered today as had been scheduled
This change occurred immediately following the violent police operation in the Salgueiro Complex.
The appeal is for clarification of some contradictions in the ruling of the previous judgement regarding a request for a plan for the reduction of lethality
At the time ministers said there was no need for any urgent measures by the STF concerning this request
as there was already a 2017 resolution by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights that obliged the state of Rio de Janeiro to put together a plan
as the Rio de Janeiro local government has never presented such a document
the organizations are arguing that the STF should act to reinforce the need for the state to comply with this resolution
A further request by the organizations is for the use of cameras on all police cars and uniforms
made up of members of the judiciary and civil society to monitor compliance with the measures imposed by the STF on the Rio government.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Carnival dancers have taken the biggest stage in Rio de Janeiro to pay tribute to Brazil’s largest Indigenous group and pressure President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to deliver on promises to eradicate illegal mining
Carnival has long been a platform for samba schools to protest
Percussionists had “Miners out” written across the skins of their drums as participants marched through the Sambadrome on Sunday evening
delivering their message to more than 70,000 revelers and millions watching live on television
“Ours is a cry for help from Brazil and the world in general,” said Davi Kopenawa

the army said illegal mining and the health crisis in the Yanomami territory “are complex issues involving the legal jurisdiction of various government agencies,” and the army is “always prepared to fulfill its strategic missions” including providing support to federal agencies
After a January 2023 presidential decree ordered the air force to close the airspace over Yanomami territory
Brazil’s air force said it has been patrolling the so-called Air Defense Identification Zone over the territory
It claims the measure led to a 90% reduction in illegal flights
associations representing federal workers in environmental and Indigenous affairs accused the armed forces of “failing to fulfill their mission of supporting and facilitating the work of other agencies” combating illegal mining
The association alleged that the military denied use of aircraft for transporting personnel and equipment and hasn’t collaborated in the destruction of mining machinery and airstrips
Government health teams have been targeted by armed miners and are unable or unwilling to reach certain communities
