The product recommendations on our site are independently chosen by our editors my wife set up a dream trip to Lake El Salto in Mexico I’d peppered her with hints since we’d met six years earlier but I was in disbelief that I’d finally be headed to the land of las lobinas grandes I think my 20 trips to that “once in a lifetime” destination speak for themselves but I really believe that El Salto is a location that every serious angler needs to visit.  magazines like Bassmaster have touted El Salto as a bass fishing Disneyland Tackle companies use it as the testing ground for new gear But here are my reasons why you need to fish there: I know that everyone has a different budget and a different tolerance for expense but a trip to El Salto is not overwhelmingly expensive.  You probably already own all of the tackle you’ll need although I’m pretty sure you’ll end up buying more for the trip anyway have you seen the prices guys pay to go offshore fishing and I can promise you that there is no group that will treat you better than the guides and lodge staff at a lake such as this.  Perhaps most important is the value of the trip You can probably spend less to fish three or four days at Okeechobee so I’m not going to guarantee you a giant or several giants but you’ll definitely be around them every day If you just want to go to El Salto and whack on fish after fish after fish and drink cold Pacificos and margaritas but having all of those shots at hard-fighting quality bass is a huge opportunity for the recreational and tournament angler alike.  Are you looking to learn a particular technique and they can grow upwards of 2 pounds in their first year so they’re hungry and mean and willing to use any trick in the book to get free and get back to their business The lake can shift 40 feet in the course of a year I was once there in October when the water was going over the spillway and we were fishing far back in the woods and I have been there on a couple of summertime trips when the lake was effectively reduced to the river channel and one that has kept the lake healthy over the years and when the lake gets inundated by major August and September storms In addition to baitfish like shad and mojarra El Salto is known for it’s ample population of fast-growing and oft-breeding tilapia El Salto’s yearly cycles are part of what have kept the lake so strong four decades after its impoundment Other Mexican lakes have become hot for a while and then gone stagnant just that many anglers who travel across the border aim for a PB El Salto remains a perfect model of management involving stakeholders to include the tilapia cooperative and local farmers who depend upon it for irrigation needs The ultimate beneficiaries are gringos like me who want to be spoiled and come home with sore thumbs About those sore thumbs I mentioned; you don’t need to come home with those if you don’t want to. Again, the service at lodges like Anglers Inn is above and beyond what you’d experience at any five-star resort or land a fish the entire trip if you don’t want to; the guides will retie your lures while you’re taking a siesta and they’re masters of getting even the most deeply hung crankbait out of a seemingly impenetrable underwater hazard The service is so good that I once got up in the middle of the night and started to head behind the bar to grab a soft drink and opened the cooler before I could get there It’s also not that hard to get there There are direct flights from major hubs like Dallas and Phoenix you’ll be whisked away in an air-conditioned van with a cooler full of Bebidas to the lake or several “one mores.” Book for as long as you can Bring your own reels spooled with 17- to 20-pound test fluorocarbon or mono we’ve never had problems putting them in our carry-on bags and I strongly suggest putting them in your checked bag for the trip home Even reels without line have become a point of contention I store two oversized tackle bags and a rod tube down at the lake (I message ahead of time and they have them waiting at my room when I arrive) yet somehow I always manage to bring more and more tackle Some of it eventually works its way into the rotation Your choices lure choices will vary by the season and the conditions but beyond bringing plenty of terminal tackle here are my suggestions for must-have items but don’t forget: the lodge does your laundry every day you can leave some clothes at home and pack more tackle but you’ll have what you need when Mexican giants put on the feed bag and subsequently in the General Counsel’s Office for a Cabinet-level agency where he specializes in matters relating to Federal administrative law He is also a Senior Writer for Bassmaster Magazine a prolific blogger and has written for numerous other magazines he consults for numerous companies endemic to the fishing industry and leads trips on behalf of Anglers Inn International to Mexico for largemouths and to Brazil for peacock bass and currently utilizes his vast legal experience as the Chair of the Bylaws Committee He often dreams of adding new species to his “life list” and frequently obsesses about giant trevally bluefin tuna and golden dorado in addition to double-digit bass Pete and his wife Hanna operate halfpastfirstcast.com The best online fishing resource to learn and stay current on the latest fishing gear Salto Systems has announced the launch of the new XS4 Mini Metal Tubular model an electronic locking solution for upgrading and modernizing access control systems This lock offers a range of advanced features and an easy-to-install design that simplifies the transition from traditional mechanical-key-operated locks to state-of-the-art electronic access control Salto SVN data-on-card virtual network capabilities and mobile functionality compatible with a digital key or Apple Wallet this model integrates into an access control system via the cloud or on-premise providing comprehensive access information for every door in a facility This intelligent locking system also utilizes advanced encryption and robust protection against advanced attacks Standout features of the XS4 Mini Metal Tubular include: This electronic smart door lock integrates Salto SVN The XS4 Mini Metal Model is designed for seamless compatibility with European and now ANSI tubular latch-equipped standard doors Salto users can choose from a wide range of handle designs For more information, visit the website at www.salto.us or www.saltosystems.com/en-ca. It’s the first time scientists have been able to get a robot to land balanced on such a tiny target whose team reported the results March 19 in Science Robotics.  “We’ve been inspired by squirrels,” says Yim who worked on the project at the University of California Berkeley and is now at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.  We summarize the week's scientific breakthroughs every Thursday By subscribing, you agree to our TermsPrivacy Policy.  You must be 13 or older to sign up For full digital access, consider a $2.99 per month subscription Yim and his collaborators reported February 27 in the Journal of Experimental Biology.  If you land on a square and feel like you’re going to fall forward pushing hard against the ground to prevent yourself from toppling over Yim’s team tried to mimic those strategies in Salto, a spindly little hopping bot that was developed in 2016, and named after “saltatorial,” or jumping, movement. In 2020, the researchers figured out how to make Salto stick the landing on flat surfaces They added a clawlike gripper to Salto’s foot so it could catch a pipe during landings And they gave Salto the ability to stand or crouch to improve its balance.  Salto successfully leapt from one PVC pipe to another 25 times out of 30 catching the tube and swinging over or under it most of the time “There’s lots of room for improvement,” Yim says Salto may not be ready to join Cirque du Soleil yet but he has ideas about how to improve the bot’s balance making it better for grasping the pipe upon landing like a squirrel squeezing a branch with its toes.  Yim envisions future bots that are even more agile than Salto and could one day help with construction hopping onto pipes or girders while carrying cameras for inspection or working outside in a forest doing environmental monitoring But Salto will need many more tweaks to catch up to its bushy-tailed brothers “The robot is definitely not able to do what a squirrel can do just yet.”  Questions or comments on this article? Fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) are arboreal acrobats, capable of jumping quickly from tree limb to tree limb. New research shows how these rodents land their leaps. During hibernation, gut microbes of thirteen-lined ground squirrels (one shown) help the critters hold on to muscle by turning excess nitrogen into muscle’s building blocks. Squirrels love peanuts of course, but peanuts may not love them back. Populations of red squirrels fed a supplemental diet of peanuts developed weaker jaws than those living on a natural, harder nut diet. A new device projects 3-D graphics, such as this car. A new book contends that Silicon Valley’s vision of the future — one in which AI enables humans to surpass biological limitations and build an ever-growing society in space — is implausible and morally fraught. Organizations that want to counter climate misinformation with AI need to bring in experts to guide training of the models, a new study suggests. Neutral greenhouse gas emissions are achieved when the same amount of greenhouse gases (CO2 equivalent) emitted are removed from the atmosphere in different ways. This does not mean human activities cannot emit any CO2, but it does imply that we cannot generate more than we can remove. Hazelnutt has sent 5.14a slab. She teaches people how to climb slab. She even sells “Slab Is Sexy” stickers on Etsy Hazelnutt swapped crimps and microscopic crystals for a mega steep route that pushed her grade to 5.14b on Belly of the Beast This is the eighth and most difficult pitch of El Chamán Loco the project Hazelnutt has taken on this winter with Canadian climber Connor Runge in El Salto Until Runge and Hazelnutt hopped on El Chamán Loco in January, this 14-pitch route had never been fully free climbed. The route was first established in 2015 by three Italian climbers but they aided three of the pitches due to the sustained difficulty Since Runge started coming to El Salto a few years ago where he could see the Chamán Wall quite clearly he recalls: “I would look over at the Shaman Wall and be like ‘What is up with that?’” Then when the Italians rebolted the route a few years ago “It would be so cool to go free those pitches,” he says of the three pitches yet to be free climbed So Runge slid into fellow Rab-sponsored climber Hazelnutt’s DMs and proposed the project After gut-checking their compatibility on a climb in Colorado Aside from a week off the wall due to weather Runge and Hazelnutt climbed more or less every other day or two in January Runge spent a lot of time cleaning up the climb and breaking off loose rock he’d managed to free every pitch of El Chamán Loco (proposed grade 5.14b/8c) “I feel super stoked with what I’ve done,” Runge says While he was hoping to tackle a sub-24 hour free ascent of El Chamán Loco this past weekend a knee injury has pushed that objective to the end of February But Runge remains happy with what he accomplished—and to have gotten to know Hazelnutt on the project how to chill: “She’s really into sleeping in and I’m super intense (according to Anna) it’s about the people you meet along the way.” Hazelnutt described herself as more or less along for the ride with Runge’s objective of freeing El Chamán Loco “I was just going to support him on this first free ascent and try my best,” she says she’d started to realize that in order to push her grade not slab—and the steep pitches at the center of the wall presented an opportunity Hazelnutt estimates she put seven sessions into working Belly of the Beast before she “locked in” and redpointed it “I got the second free ascent of the hardest pitch—or the first female,” she says “I don’t know what kind of labels to put on it but I’m the second person to free it successfully and it’s my first of the grade.” Runge gave Hazelnutt the honor of naming the route while jugging up alongside the pitch on fixed lines Because the pitch is so overhanging—Hazelnutt estimates 45 degrees or so—the rope curved like a belly through the air She recounts the resulting exchange that occurred between her and Runge as follows: Hazelnutt: I’m stuck in the belly of the beast it occurred to her that “belly of the beast” would make a good name for the pitch “That’s what the route should be named when you send it,” Runge told her Sending it may not have been Hazelnutt’s proclaimed goal but she did act on the feeling that she needed to switch it up to advance her climbing I’ve been trying to diversify from slab,” she explains “It’s so hard to try to push grades in that style because they become really heinous.” It also becomes more challenging to find slab projects at grades of 5.14+ and up without having to travel to Arco or North Wales Hazelnutt has been doing more moonboarding and bouldering to strengthen her shoulders She also underwent some specialized training in the “dark arts” of kneebarring with Emily Harrington earlier this year which came in handy for the knee scum on Belly Hazelnut managed to tick off two more pitches on the route: a 5.13a and 5.13c Her remaining goal is to free all the pitches on the route—but she’s not stressing about it So I’m pretty excited to try that.” Choosing to tackle the hardest pitch first was her strategy for gaining the confidence she needed to free the rest of the route she’s got two more 5.13s to tackle on El Chaman with a wild variety of features and giant tufas you can literally bear hug—the rest of the route lives up to the loco in its name with no consistent style does Hazelnutt’s foray into overhanging power climbing mean that she thinks slab isn’t as sexy as it used to be Will she start slinging stickers proclaiming “steep is sexy” “I’m never going to stop,” Hazelnutt laughs of her love of slab “But the steeps aren’t as bad as I thought but the falls are a little less scary.” Right now she’s really enjoying diversifying her climbing and getting into more styles But she does want the world to know that she’s still committed to slab: “It’s still so sexy and I’m still going to pursue it at the highest level I want to do the hardest slabs out there.” “I like that I’m pushing my sport grade in the middle of a bigger objective,” she explains “I find that really exciting and challenging That is where my heart is right now is big walls.” This summer she’s headed to pursue a big wall project in Madagascar with Matilda Soderlund As a resident of the road who describes herself as “dirtbagging light,” she can go wherever the weather’s good he’s headed to Spain in March and will stay in Europe through spring Then he’ll head back to Squamish for the summer While this is Hazelnutt’s first time climbing in El Salto—or anywhere in Mexico—she says she’s hooked and plans to return next winter “I really feel like the community just embraced me,” she says Chill vibes and world-class climbing aside and she still has a lot of family in the country “It’s just kind of cool to be in Mexico doing the thing I like for myself,” she reflects “It’s been a really beautiful experience.” *Hazelnutt isn’t Anna’s real last name—it’s Hazlett Hazelnutt is a nickname that stuck from her days on the high school track the construction of the Salto de Chira hydroelectric power plant on the island of Gran Canaria featuring a 200MW pumped-storage hydroelectric system and a desalination plant is designed to strengthen the island’s electricity supply and provide backup power enhancing energy security for local residents and businesses The Salto de Chira project will use a two-reservoir system to store and release energy enabling Gran Canaria to utilize surplus renewable energy when demand is high This facility will store energy generated from renewable sources reducing reliance on fossil fuels and facilitating a greater share of renewable power in the local energy mix An associated desalination plant will provide additional water resources supporting irrigation needs for local farming communities “We are delighted to join forces with Red Eléctrica to support the construction of the Salto de Chira hydroelectric power plant This project is key to ensuring energy autonomy and driving the green transition in Gran Canaria,” said Jean-Christophe Laloux Director General of Operations in the European Union at the EIB “The project will improve electricity supply quality and security on the island using existing resources and reflects the EIB’s commitment to territorial cohesion and climate action The EIB’s financing aligns with its objectives to support cohesion regions emphasized the role of energy storage in supporting renewable integration: “Storage will be one of the key elements in the energy transition which is isolated and therefore more vulnerable.” the Salto de Chira facility will enable Gran Canaria to improve the reliability of its electricity grid particularly as it shifts toward a more renewable-based system The pumped-storage design allows water to be cycled between two reservoirs generating hydroelectric power during high-demand periods Excess renewable energy will be used to pump water from the lower reservoir for future electricity generation when demand rises or renewable output falls The desalination plant will assist in maintaining reservoir levels while also providing irrigation water for the local agriculture sector The EIB has been active in supporting energy security projects across Europe it provided over €21 billion in financing to secure Europe’s energy supply with €4.5 billion dedicated to projects in Spain focused on renewables The Salto de Chira project also aligns with the REPowerEU plan the EU’s strategic push to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports the EIB expects to mobilize over €150 billion for clean energy projects Give your tackle a range of responsibilities from maintenance to tenant communication – and everything in between – so making the most of top tech tools can be invaluable Enter Salto’s Homelok smart access solution a leading access control solutions provider made a name for itself with smart locks and access control products developing its innovative SVN data-on-card technology that doesn’t need complicated infrastructure or require expensive wiring to every door In supporting the market’s evolution and the needs of property managers there has been an incredible rise in demand for cloud-based systems Homelok pairs Salto’s proven hardware with advanced security technology to create a modern cloud-based access control system specifically designed for multifamily building use Multifamily housing technology can be cumbersome and overcomplicated often requiring separate access tools for the main entrance “We don’t believe that the combination of swipe and key offers a great user experience and doesn’t maximize security,” explains Preston Grutzmacher “We have invented technologies allowing management to easily access every property opening from the main entry to the garage we can manage all those access points through a single software suite.” Often managers have to re-program each lock every time a new occupant arrives managers can oversee all residents through a single portal This means that managers can dispense resident key cards and appoint passcodes – all from the convenience of their smartphone Homelok allows property managers the ability to use their mobile device to complete any task previously carried out from their computer from moving in a resident to remotely opening the package delivery room Move-in and move-out administration is a major part of a manager’s workflow taking up time and leaving room for human error Homelok is working to integrate with major accounting software programs to simplify this process they will be entered into the system with a name and lease start and end date – and that information allows for access control These details will sync with the property management system for a completely seamless process managers have been challenged with renters looking to share access to their units by simply disclosing their usernames and passwords with a friend requiring users to access the system using their SSO log-ins for Google While many people may share a username and password with a friend most people hesitate to allow friends full online access via their web sign-in This feature acts as a strong deterrent for sharing unit access offering a significantly more secure process Residents are also looking for ways to enhance their living experience, with 72 per cent of renters amenable to paying more for “smart apartment” features Homelok’s one-portal system elevates the user experience Residents can use their Apple wallet to operate access doors within the building using an iPhone or Apple watch without having to open up an app “We are moving the industry forward with cutting-edge technology that allows people to open a door with one tap,” says Grutzmacher Downloading the app on an Android phone will conveniently afford users all the same features and benefits Cybersecurity is on everyone’s minds. In fact, 75 per cent of property managers believe that cybersecurity is a major concern in property management technology It’s important to know that your system is protected Homelok’s cloud security is unsurpassed in the market there is a layer of hardware security with an additional chip adding additional cybersecurity protection and going the extra mile with hardware upgrades are all steps taken by Salto to prioritize security and Salto is moving forward with modern solutions to address common multi-family dwelling access challenges Homelok offers renters and property managers ease of access and time-saving tools for an exceptional residential experience and website in this browser for the next time I comment Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" info@mediaedge.ca www.mediaedge.ca Hospitality Industry Leader at SALTO Systems They discussed the latest advancements in access control technology and the impact of AI in the hospitality industry This interview is part of our HITEC 2024 series bringing you key insights from industry leaders Introduction and Company Overview Roland Smith introduces himself as the Hospitality Industry Leader at SALTO Systems SALTO Systems is renowned for pioneering RFID technology in access control Smith highlights his extensive experience in customer-facing technology Observations at HITEC 2024 Smith notes that many companies are still finding their footing post-COVID especially in integrating mobile apps and AI He emphasizes the industry's focus on leveraging ecosystems and technology to create comprehensive solutions for end users Technology Innovation and Practical Application Smith discusses the importance of developing technology that meets specific user needs rather than innovating for the sake of it He stresses that technology should provide true solutions and that understanding when to partner with other companies is critical to achieving this goal Biometrics in Access Control Puorto and Smith delve into the topic of biometrics a field where SALTO Systems is making significant strides Using a mobile phone and facial recognition to unlock doors eliminates the need for physical keys and provides a seamless Privacy Concerns with Biometrics Smith addresses privacy concerns He explains that SALTO Systems has implemented a system where users opt-in to store their data which is automatically deleted if the user is no longer present This approach ensures compliance with privacy regulations while maintaining the benefits of biometric technology Future Trends in AI and Data Utilization Looking ahead Smith predicts that AI will continue to generate significant change in the industry He highlights the use of AI in threat detection and management using facial recognition for headcounts and understanding traffic patterns in buildings The goal is to leverage data and AI to create smarter Roland Smith’s insights underscore the transformative potential of biometrics and AI in hospitality By focusing on practical applications and addressing privacy concerns SALTO Systems is at the forefront of innovation in access control technology Puorto and Smith look forward to revisiting these topics at future events to see how these advancements evolve This interview is part of Hospitality Net's HITEC 2024 series showcasing the latest thought leadership in the hospitality sector Salto the jumping robot can navigate an agility course and even take a jaunt through the Berkeley campus Salto the robot looks like a Star Wars imperial walker in miniature But don’t be fooled by its size — this little robot has a mighty spring in its step Salto can vault over three times its height in a single bound Researchers at the University of California first unveiled Salto’s high-flying capabilities in 2016 they’ve equipped the robot with a slew of new skills giving it the ability to bounce in place like a pogo stick and jump through obstacle courses like an agility dog Salto can even take short jaunts around campus The researchers hope Salto will propel the development of small, nimble robots that could leap through rubble to aid in search-and-rescue missions. They will describe the robot’s new skills today (Tuesday, May 21) at the 2019 International Conference on Robotics and Automation in Montreal “Small robots are really great for a lot of things like running around in places where larger robots or humans can’t fit where people might be trapped under rubble robots might be really useful at finding the people in a way that is not dangerous to rescuers and might even be faster than rescuers could have done unaided,” said UC Berkeley robotics graduate student Justin Yim but also able to jump really high and really quickly so that it could navigate these difficult places.” Yim works with Ronald Fearing, an electrical engineering and computer sciences professor at UC Berkeley, whose Biomimetic Millisystems Lab explores how the mechanics of animal movement can be applied to create more agile robots Fearing’s lab is known for building insect-inspired robots that can safely crawl across tricky surfaces that are too smooth or too rough for a wheeled robot to navigate which stands for “saltatorial locomotion on terrain obstacles,” Fearing instead wanted to create a robot that moved from place to place by hopping Robotics graduate student Justin Yim led the effort to program Salto with sophisticated control software that lets the robot master complex maneuvers powerful leg is modeled after those of the galago tree-dwelling primate’s muscles and tendons store energy in a way that gives the spry creature the ability to string together multiple jumps in a matter of seconds Salto also can navigate complex terrain — like a pile of debris — that might be impossible to cross without jumping or flying “Unlike a grasshopper or cricket that winds up and gives one jump we’re looking at a mechanism where it can jump “This allows our robot to jump from location to location which then gives it the ability to temporarily land on surfaces that we might not be able to perch on.” Three years ago, Salto’s design team demonstrated how the robot could take a leap and then immediately spring higher by ricocheting off a wall making it the world’s most vertically agile robot Yim has been leading the effort to design sophisticated control systems that let Salto master increasingly complex tasks navigating an obstacle course or following a moving target Yim has also equipped Salto with new technology that allows it to “feel” its own body telling it what angle it is pointing and the bend of its leg Salto has been confined to a room in one of Berkeley’s engineering buildings where motion capture cameras track its exact angle and position and transmit that data back to a computer which rapidly crunches the numbers to tell Salto how to angle itself for its next leap Now that Salto has a sense of itself and its own motion the robot can make these calculations for itself allowing Yim to take the robot outside and use a joystick and radio controller to tell it where to go “Motion capture is great for getting the robot to jump around in a controlled environment really precisely we can’t take this out and use it anywhere else because it takes a long time to set up all of these cameras,” Yim said “We really wanted to be able to take the robot out and go jump around we needed the robot to be able to compute where it is and what it is doing — just with the computer on top of its own body.” Salto can now go out for walks on the Berkeley campus where it has successfully maneuvered over sidewalks The mathematical models that make this possible for Salto also could be generalized to control the motion of other kinds of robots “By understanding the way that these dynamics work for Salto then we can extend the same type of understanding to other systems and we could build other robots that are bigger or smaller or differently shaped or weighted,” Yim said Fearing hopes to continue to explore the possibilities for hopping robots “Salto is our first step toward robots that bounce around,” Fearing said “We could extend Salto to add the ability to grab onto branches to land and launch from those things Salto starts out with a very simple mechanism It provides a basis for more complicated robots that also could be very highly dynamic and doing a lot of bouncing.” This research was supported by the Army Research Office Grant No UC Berkeley undergraduate Eric Wang is also an author on the conference The mission reviewed Ascó NPP’s response to recommendations and suggestions made during an IAEA SALTO mission in 2021 The Ascó nuclear power plant is one of Spain’s five operational nuclear power plants where seven reactors produce 20 per cent of the country’s electricity Ascó has two pressurized-water reactor units with an installed power of approximately 1030 megawatts electric (MW(e)) each Unit 1 went into commercial operation in 1984 The units are currently authorized to operate until 2030 for Unit 1 and 2031 for Unit 2 the SALTO team focused on aspects essential to the safe Long Term Operation (LTO) of both units The team reviewed implementation of recommendations made during the July 2021 SALTO review mission which had built upon an initial Pre-SALTO mission in 2019 SALTO reviews are based on IAEA safety standards “Staff at the plant are addressing the SALTO team’s recommendations and suggestions for improvement,” said team leader and IAEA Nuclear Safety Officer Martin Marchena “Basing its efforts on recommendations made by the SALTO team in 2021 the plant has made significant improvements in the area of ageing management The SALTO team encourages the plant management to address the remaining findings from the 2021 mission and implement all activities for safe LTO.” The review team – comprising four experts from the Czech Republic as well as two IAEA staff members – said the plant had: The team noted that further work is necessary by the plant to ensure that: The plant management expressed a determination to address the remaining areas and to continue cooperating with the IAEA on LTO “For us this is the last step of the IAEA’s supporting service to ensure safe operation of our reactors in the LTO period and technical cooperation helped to improve our focus on safe operation We have worked together with the IAEA for the past 5 years carrying out 3 missions and several technical discussions We appreciate the IAEA’s support of our plant in managing ageing and preparation for safe LTO and we will continue to improve our processes to further comply with IAEA safety standards,” said The team provided a draft report to ANAV and to the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) ANAV and CSN will have an opportunity to make factual comments on the draft CSN and the Spanish Government within three months Neither SALTO nor OSART reviews are description for the Community Action Gateway I knew without a doubt I wanted to be part of the program because of the community component It’s a different class than I expected to take in college I thought I would be in typical lecture classes To have the opportunity to work with outside organizations while learning simultaneously in the classroom was something I was drawn to.” In CACT Salto worked with Make the Road CT and their group Madres Guerreras in both the fall and spring semesters her group worked on a video project and in the spring they conducted a comparative analysis of schools in the Hartford area Salto reflected on the impact of working with the same community organization for a full year in CACT the relationships built with community partners over multiple semesters are stronger It felt like we were really helping,” she says She worked with fellow student research assistant Bea Dresser ‘22 and CHER team members Abby Fisher Williamson The team investigated the experiences of students of color with Community Learning courses at Trinity Existing academic literature has a gap in first-hand accounts from students of color about their experiences in service-learning programs “Wendy has done the incredible work of conducting first-hand interviews and focus groups with students of color at Trinity which has deeply impacted our understanding and implementation of community-engaged teaching and course development,” says Erica Crowley “None of this work could have been done without the diligence and passion displayed by both Wendy and Bea throughout this process and their work marks a significant moment in Trinity’s community engagement work overall.” Salto was tasked with completing forty interviews and focus groups as part of the research project “I’ve done interviews before for assignments in classes she found that the experience was fun and enlightening She heard student perspectives she wouldn’t have thought of herself “It resonated with me that I kept hearing how impactful community engagement experiences were,” she says Part of Salto’s preparation for her research assistantship was her time spent in the Fall 2020 Community Learning Research Fellows program Dana Research Associate Professor of Psychology In the program she worked with Professor Julie Gamble and the City of Hartford’s Commission on Refugee and Immigrant Affairs Working with commissioner Professor Janet Bauer the team created a website for the Commission researched effective ways for them to connect to their target demographic ran focus groups to gauge how other organizations in Hartford work with immigrants and suggested social media strategies to help the Commission connect with more people Wendy served as a student worker at Trinfo she welcomed community members to the space and served as student social media coordinator “I’m working at the front desk this semester and it’s nice to be back and see regulars walk in I realize in those moments that I’ve been working at Trinfo for so long that now I know who the regulars are.” She sees Trinfo as one important part of Trinity’s connection to Hartford and has experienced the value of spending time as a student in this liminal campus space I’ve learned new things about Hartford that I didn’t know before It provides a different perspective on my experience being here at Trinity,” she says To round out her community engagement work at Trinity Salto is in the Liberal Arts Action Lab (LAAL) this spring As part of the anti-racist education project and two community partners from Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy (HMTCA) The team is creating and distributing a survey to collect information on how teachers at HMTCA and other schools view anti-racist education and the efforts of their schools to implement anti-racist education They are hoping that their findings will allow the teachers to have an informed discussion with their school board she is reflecting on her four years at Trinity it was classes that were community-based that made my experience worthwhile It’s the thing that I will remember most from my college experience.” "We were afraid we were going to lose the mountain," she said echoing a refrain oft-repeated by one of the primary characters in recent chapters of the El Salto saga "It was in danger of going into receivership," Martinez said of the land And although some members of the association reject Martinez's assertion that the land was in jeopardy that general fear was grounded in generational experience The El Salto del Agua Association originally formed as a collective representing between 68 and 78 individuals who banded together in the 1940s to pay the back taxes on a section of land within the former Antonio Martinez Land Grant They pitched in what they could afford and reclaimed the property had fallen into the possession of Arthur Manby who is said to have swindled the land grant from its original heirs some folks with a stake in the association — and some outside of it — began to buy sell and otherwise transfer member "shares" in the land Although it enacted bylaws providing for 50,000 member shares valued at $1 upon its incorporation the association never issued actual certificates of shares That didn't stop folks from trading in them for as much as $5,000 apiece over the past 40 years leading to the bamboozlement — intentional or not — of dozens of shareholders like Morris Arrellano the defendants after whom the recently-decided lawsuit is titled Sandra and Morris Arrellano and Priscilla and Lorenzo Gallegos claim 1/4 of original shareholder Leandro Fresquez' shared estate perpetuity tract known as El Salto del Agua Association purchased for us from Sabino Rendon by Bolivar Quintana on 9/3/1996," one 2016 court filing Quintana and Arrellano are both descendants of original members and therefore had a legitimate stake in the association But some members acquired handfuls of extra shares or sold shares to people who weren't qualified for membership Only original members and their direct descendants can claim membership El Salto member Horacio Trujillo said he couldn't speak on the record for this story due to the litigious nature of some association members as well as the potential to attract harassment he summarized what led the association to request a court decision regarding the membership controversies have developed regarding who are the rightful members and the extent of individual owner's memberships based on conflicting histories of acquisition and rules of the association governing membership and ownership," Trujillo wrote "While some uncertainty exists regarding the authority of decisions regarding the association in 1979 members of the association formed a corporation and adopted bylaws reflecting the original 'reglas' of the association that had been established in 1949." a majority of which focuses on the year 2016 — the year the primary lawsuit was filed — is filled with drama between Trujillo who served on the association's board of directors at the time who at one point claimed to belong to a separate board of directors The shadow board of directors was purportedly elected during a simulacrum of the association's annual meeting organized by Martinez and his allies at the time It took place at the same time as the annual meeting of duly-elected board of directors The confusion led the association's first attorney trust was fragile or nonexistent between various factions within the association with infighting over internal funds and taxes "What came out with this declaratory judgment," Gallegos said was found to have been wrongly excluded from the association's ranks for years she diligently tracked down records and sleuthed out family histories that confirmed her own right to membership within the association as well as the rights of dozens of other descendants scores of court filings and a long list of attorneys for the association and representing individuals Judge Chavez boiled the dispute down to the membership question "The court finds that the original membership of the association consists of the 74 names identified on the 1957 [membership] list plus four additional individuals who were inadvertently excluded from that list even though they participated directly in the original tax sale/redemption of the subject El Salto property," Chavez wrote in his decision gifts or bequests outside of the original members and their heirs shall be null and void." "Any dispute regarding transfers made to third parties beyond the heirs (direct descendants) of the original members are to be resolved outside of this litigation," Chavez said But what about the recreation fees that Martinez alleges were underreported and possibly embezzled years ago or the legal fees that were racked up while members fought the association to try and protect their shares The heirs of the "original" members agreed as a part of the Aug 15 settlement that the issue of the original membership is resolved but nothing prevents folks who may have paid cash for a worthless share in El Salto from trying to recoup their money "There were never shares," Gallegos emphasized optimistic that the community has turned a page that won't lead to more feuding and lawsuits "What I am hearing from the members — from the majority of members — is that we just want to preserve this land," she said If you're interested in submitting a Letter to the Editor Your browser is out of date and potentially vulnerable to security risks. We recommend switching to one of the following browsers: Unlock this page—subscribe now or sign in for instant access!
