it is one of those rare instances where one plus one truly equals three,” says Barker Barker had been running JEB’s Brazilian operations from an office in Santa Cruz do Sul he started contracting ever more of it to TTS’ logistics department A full merger seemed the next logical step a sharp businessman who values his independence The case for joining forces proved too compelling why not; it actually makes a lot of sense,” says Barker enlarging its footprint in Brazil with a more robust farmer base and entering Malawi with new growing operations “Now we also have Zimbabwe on our radar,” says Barker In addition to an extensive network of global origins the new company can draw on profound industry knowledge he is dealing with elderly people,” jokes Demeulemeester cleaning a sample room in Santa Cruz do Sul experienced people.” Add up the tobacco tenures of just the company’s most senior executives which also includes industry veteran John Derek Visser and the tally handsomely exceeds 150 years Which is not to say that the company’s management is dominated by gray-hairs Aware of the importance of succession planning YTL has been actively recruiting a new generation of leaders That crop includes professionals such as Lucas Dockhorn the scion of a prominent local tobacco family who unlike some of his contemporaries preferred to stay in the Santa Cruz do Sul region rather than move to a city “‘Tobacco’ is truly in my blood,” says Dockhorn referring to the tendency of tobacco leaf merchants to strongly identify with their profession Despite the industry’s negative public image (even in tobacco powerhouse Brazil) it has been surprisingly easy to attract young people to the business “It can be harder to get a bank to deal with your business than to find a new young guy,” he marvels Because of its wide variety of sourcing areas, YTL can offer customers substitutes when supply in one area is either short or expensive, or both, as was the case in Brazil this season (see “The Great Scramble,” Tobacco Reporter “We have not only the ability to offer those alternatives but also the knowledge to guide customers to the appropriate replacements—that you can replace BO1 grades from Brazil with Chinese tobacco from the Hainan region Rather than focusing on individual transactions friendly working relationships with its customers “We will take the job from A to Z,” says Demeulemeester business is about more than just buying the best quality for the best price We can help with logistics or propose better freight rates for example; you will be surprised how creative we can be.” Low overheads and short communication lines are additional advantages “We are very flexible and quick to act,” says Barker explaining that what the company’s sales team lacks in size it compensates for with ambition it contracted with Brasfumo in Venancio Aires but the company has worked with other partners as well Pointing to the excess capacity in southern Brazil Barker says third-party processing is a sensible and cost-effective solution for YTL and its customers both parties faced a learning curve as the companies came together the deal presented an opportunity to learn about new tobacco origins including some he wasn’t aware of before as leaf suppliers is a little gold mine with a very solid supply chain,” he says “I didn’t even know they grew tobacco.” To familiarize himself with all those areas Barker traveled more in 2022 than he had in many years “It’s been an exciting journey for me,” he says stressing the continued importance of face-to-face meetings even in the Zoom era was impressed by the dexterity of JEB’s operations “The decision-making process is much quicker at JEB,” says Demeulemeester “That’s definitely a plus point for the customer.” Tobacco is a notoriously conservative business and some customers need time to approve new suppliers even if they have known the people running those businesses for many years customers of YTL’s predecessor companies will have the option to continue doing business with either JEB or TTS “The Idea is to eventually have everything under one umbrella—but if needed we still have the mechanisms to use both JEB and TTS,” says Barker who expects the merger to be fully completed within a year the company is considering expanding into supplemental agricultural commodities Such initiatives will provide the firm with additional streams of income in the medium term while also protecting it against the impact of declining global cigarette sales in the long run fits well with the partners’ shared ambition to leave a legacy “Our goal is to create a sustainable company where our youngsters will have a good future,” says Barker “The decisions we make today will have a real impact on these people and their families Our job is to provide a stable foundation.” That means being creative and thinking outside the box while at the same time being realistic about the possibilities ©2025 Nicotine Resource Consortium Get quick access to your favorite articles Manage alerts on breaking news and favorite drivers Make your voice heard with article commenting During Race 2 this Sunday in Santa Cruz South a crash during the pit stop window involved three cars with two of them immediately being consciously removed to the local hospital Daniel Asensio has suffered a fracture on his knee while Lucas Loures has a fracture in his right leg Both of them are hospitalized The third mechanic suffered minor abrasions and continued working on the race but if you hang out in a certain corner of the internet there is a good chance you will recognise Tiago Rech He is the star of one of football’s most enduring Not one of the cruel ones that speak to the less commendable side of our nature his is a feel-good story told in two pictures and an explanatory caption The first photo shows Rech in his mid-twenties his only company on a light-blue concrete step There were 5,000 fans in the stadium that evening of the rocky romance of supporting a small-town club The second photo shows Rech in his early thirties he is sat in the stands at a football ground He wears a grey polo shirt and sensible trousers you can see why the montage of the two photos pops up on social media every few months Even boiled down to its essential elements the kind of thing Hollywood scriptwriters should be queuing up to adapt and the story takes on an even more fantastical tenor Listen to Rech tell it — with detours into debt and depression — and you soon realise that the meme barely scratches the surface famous mostly for its annual Oktoberfest — a cultural remnant of the huge wave of German immigration into the southern states of Brazil in the 1800s The football team is no one’s idea of a big deal: their stadium holds around 7,000 people and they only play in the local state championship which usually runs from January until April The league is dominated by the two big clubs in the region Most people in Santa Cruz support one of them first and then one of the two in their city — Santa Cruz or rivals Avenida — second “They were my first club and a big part of my adolescence I always loved the atmosphere of the small stadium of people going there to see friends or eat one of our famous hotdogs.” Anyone who follows a lower-league team will recognise this mode of fandom It is football as community; results take a backseat to a sense of belonging Rech was working as a journalist in Porto Alegre in 2012 He expected it to be quiet: it was a Saturday night in summer and many people had headed to the beach he had spoken to a few other fans who were planning to attend you usually at least get the odd relative of a player who wants to watch.” He got to the ground 15 minutes before kick-off The woman at the ticket office told him he was the first to arrive Maybe people were drinking in a bar close by the game started and still there was no one “A lot of people here in the city say that they were at the game that day,” he says with a rueful smile and I guess people from Santa Cruz were sat in with the Gremio fans The Gremio supporters sat in the adjacent stand soon noticed Rech sat alone “They were making these jokes about Santa Cruz being a one-fan team I think they started feeling sorry for me.” the unexpected happened: Santa Cruz scored celebrating in a manner that could best be described as muted “I started to get text messages from my colleagues asking me if that was me at the stadium,” he says Then the cameraman started asking me to wave They announced it on the broadcast and then the thing just exploded.” 2012/2021. Não é só futebol. pic.twitter.com/X6OE4RTmcI — Tiago André Rech (@tiagoarech) June 8, 2021 Rech gave interviews on Brazilian television and fielded calls from journalists from around the world He appeared on the front page of the local paper (headline: “Don’t let me go alone”) and was presented with a shirt by the club “I was lost; it all took me by surprise a bit I had a look on YouTube and saw the video had 500,000 views I understood that the whole thing had taken on this other dimension; it was bigger than I had imagined.” The reaction was almost universally positive Rech was seen as a shining example of commitment turning up to support his team in a match they were always going to lose (Gremio ended up winning 4-1) even when everyone else had decided to sack it off The quiet heroism of it turned him into a minor celebrity back home “I continued to live in Porto Alegre after that people talked about the story of the lone fan,” he says having taken on more and more responsibility I probably would not have got that job at such a young age,” he says “But the club had been relegated from the first division of the state championship and the directors thought it was time for fresh blood.” Rech’s friends weren’t convinced it was a good idea but he had no experience running any kind of business Sete meses. They have formed the largest mobilization of donations and volunteerism in the country’s history. In the month since the floods began, the Civil Defense has collected 2,000 tons of donations The Services for the Underserved (S:US) volunteer bank has registered 70,000 records These numbers showcase the virtuous circle of aid that has united the country “This contributed to a decrease in the population’s participation in donations,” said Paula Iabiani CEO of Integrated Disbursement and Information System (IDIS) At the current rate of collaboration in recent days it is likely that the country will return to the top positions in 2024 “We are being profoundly impacted by the experiences of other human beings linked to our ability to let ourselves be sensitized by what others experience It touches on our affections and unconscious identifications This is the primordial impulse for solidarity action,” psychoanalyst Maria Homem said As Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva celebrated on X this is the “largest movement of donations recorded in the history” of Brazil the chain that formed is multidisciplinary and goes beyond the expected crisis professionals: doctors One unexpected resource is SOS Rio Grande do Sul. This platform connects and updates the needs and availability of over 400 shelters across the state A total of 1,300 volunteers work to meet the flood victims’ demands They update the day-to-day life of the shelters provide care for the children and collect and distribute supplies “The first few days were focused on rescues But everything changes very quickly,” said Pedro Schanzer a founder of the Porto Alegre-based operation until I noticed that at each point I arrived the desperation was so great that there was no single coordination We set up a team that has adapted our actions according to the needs of each day.” For the roughly 100,000 children displaced by the floods, the treatment must be different. Many have not only lost their homes, but cherished belongings as well, like toys and pets. World Vision Brazil, a child care non-governmental organization (NGO) based in São Paulo has helped by putting together 15,000 “tenderness kits.” These kits aim to restore children’s emotional well-being by stimulating them with activities The organization has also assembled food baskets “Children are one of the most vulnerable groups in the midst of crises, and often have no idea of the magnitude of the events they are experiencing. They find themselves away from home, family and friends, and are likely to be psychologically impacted by this crisis,” said Thiago Crucciti We must respond now to ensure that they get the support they desperately need.” 60 volunteers use 22 stoves to prepare and distribute around 3,000 meals Firefighter Robinson Luiz Jobim Rosa did an extraordinary service; while his own house was flooded in São Leopoldo he evacuated 200 people stranded at the Canoas Emergency Hospital “Saving people in their time of need and distress is part of our routine I keep working because that’s our mission,” he said Jobim Rosa still doesn’t know how he’ll recover from the floods his three children and their mother were elsewhere when the water reached their home “The only one at home at the time was my dog who was rescued by a neighbor,” he mentioned A similar story involved police officer Roberto Kaminski in Lajeado When he saw the water rushing into his apartment on the second floor he went to rescue an elderly couple on the third floor he took what he could carry to two empty apartments on the fourth floor I didn’t manage to rescue everything I wanted in time,” he explained police officer Everton Toillier prioritized saving items belonging to his one-year-old daughter he immediately swam out and rescued a lady who was clinging to a tree “I managed to get them both to a boat and went back home to try and rescue my daughter’s belongings,” he stated Many helpful volunteers started out with one mission and ended up on another, like Edu Leporo, founder of the NGO Moradores de Rua e Seus Cães (MRSC) the photographer and activist traveled to the South to assist animals in the floods The problem will get worse when the water recedes and people want to go back to their homes and start again,” he stated In Porto Alegre, Leporo relies on the NGO’s volunteer veterinarian Audrei de Oliveira Souza. The assistance forces rescued 11,500 animals by midweek, including the symbol of the resistance: a horse named Caramelo But they remain tireless in their search for human and animal survivors,” Leporo described the coordinator of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUC-RS) Center for Studies and Research into Trauma and Stress He identified several cases of burnout — the physical and emotional exhaustion caused by work — among them others because of the emotional overload in the face of so much suffering a term we use for this moment,” he explained Technological resources have helped mitigate the catastrophe “How can the hyperconnection of mobility and communication be used favorably How can we solve global problems with specific regional effects?” Homem asked “The awareness that we are one people and one species mobilizes us in an unprecedented way.” Artists and public figures are some of the most adept at navigating networks and platforms led his colleagues in a solidarity concert He was born in Ceará but raised in Porto Alegre He raised 2.5 million reais ($460,000) in just a few hours “What’s happening is something of unprecedented proportions I saw my neighborhood on TV and a guy passing in front of my house in a boat “There’s a task force that’s going to get thousands of volunteers to clean the houses We’ve bought more than a hundred pressure washers at cost which will be very useful for cleaning up when the water recedes.” Other big names in music have announced plans to help Zezé Di Camargo & Luciano and Leonardo & Luísa Sonza will host their classes at Allianz Parque in São Paulo The proceeds will be put toward flood damage repair “Helping is urgent and meeting basic needs is the least we need right now Another benefit concert was held on May 22 at the Vivo Rio venue in the city of Rio de Janeiro During the first week of rain, comedian and presenter Fábio Porchat started a collection campaign. In southern Africa, for example, paleontologists have now identified sedimentary rocks that were formed from mud or sand at the beginning and the end of the period, but there are no preserved rocks from the middle of the period, as occurs in Argentina and Brazil. Luís Flávio Lopes  … with sharp, pointed teeth, adapted for an insect-based dietLuís Flávio Lopes  Melo explains that researchers are rarely able to date the age of sedimentary rocks from the Triassic with absolute certainty. Some layers in Argentina, for example, have been dated by means of radioactive isotope decay in volcanic ash. “But generally speaking, we depend on comparison of fossils found in different layers to find out whether they are the same age,” Melo says. To determine the relative ages of rock layers, researchers generally use comparisons between microscopic fossils such as grains of pollen and spores of pteridophytes, which are abundant in all periods. “Our problem is that the rocks from the Triassic in Rio Grande do Sul were deposited on the banks of rivers and floodplains, which are well-aerated environments,” Melo explains. “Oxygen destroyed the pollen and spores. The only way to date the rocks is through vertebrate fossils.” The cynodont group that became most extensively diversified in the Middle Triassic were the transversodontids. Unlike the other cynodonts, which were generally carnivorous or omnivorous, the transversodontids were herbivores. Their teeth were specialized for eating roots, leaves or any other plant matter that was available in the hot, semiarid climate that predominated in the interior of Pangaea.
