The hottest months are August and September when there are highs of over 30°C (86°F). If the sea breeze drops at this time, conditions can be sweltering. However, the reason many come to Boa Vista in the hotter months is to witness the nighttime spectacle of turtles laying their eggs on the beaches Mindelo has arguably the Atlantic’s best carnival Brazilian samba procession winding through the city’s streets (late January/early February) How much time you spend in Cabo Verde really depends on how you want to approach your stay in the archipelago If you are looking to take in three or four islands give yourself at least three weeks and plenty of leeway to allow for canceled flights and ferries If all you want is a beach holiday with a few excursions It takes around a week to see everything on all the islands – that equates to almost two months to "do" the whole country and flights linking Mindelo and the capital Praia usually take off sooner or later taxis and shared taxis called aluguers are the most common modes of transport Hiring a car is also worthwhile on Santiago and possibly Santo Antão you are going to need the services of a guide with a 4WD usually a tough old Toyota Hilux If you plan some interisland adventure, flights are affordable by European standards and fares include baggage fees, but ferries are even cheaper. The most wallet-friendly way of getting around the islands is by shared taxi, which costs CVE100–500 a ride. Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): CVE7000 If you are heading to Sal’s Santa Maria, don’t forget mosquito spray and possibly even a net to sleep under. Sturdy footwear is also a must, whether you are planning a one-day trip on Sal or a full-day hike on Fogo. In the winter months, evening temperatures can dip below 20°C (68°F), so a sweater or hoodie is always a good idea. There are two options here. Santiago is well linked with Fogo and the Fogo–Brava ferry is fairly reliable. However, the links between São Vicente and Santo Antão are rock solid, making those two islands the best combination. Somewhat surprisingly, the two most popular islands, Sal and Boa Vista, are only connected by flights in summer and by a very unreliable ferry. In Sal (and to a lesser extent Boa Vista) you’ll have no problem communicating in English. On other islands you may need to brush up on French or learn a bit of Portuguese, which most Cabo Verdeans can speak. The local language is Cabo Verdean Creole, which, although based on Portuguese, sounds very different. Learning to surf and kitesurf on the beach taking the steering wheel of a dune buggy on an island tour or trekking through verdant mountains are all possibilities for those eager to get active Or there’s the possibility of spotting wildlife from dolphins leaping through the waves to turtles nesting in the sand And then there are the cultural distractions be it taking in the national music of Friday (24) a series of reports showing the changes that Brazil’s São Francisco Valley has experienced and the export process of fruits from the country’s semi-arid region Juazeiro – Nonfibrous mango to eat with a spoon and sweet seedless grapes are the most conspicuous results from investments that have been made in the São Francisco Valley in the Brazilian semi-arid region a fruit production and export hub for the entire world fruits are produced over acres and acres of cultures that aren’t native to that region which is only made possible by a technological breakthrough that arrived in the ’70s – the river’s water harvesting for irrigation This irrigation is a project by the São Francisco and Parnaíba Valley Development Company (Codevasf) a government corporation that found this technology the best way to bring about the region’s agricultural development That is what allows the water to reach a semi-arid region with low annual rainfall “If we had to sum up the region’s transformation as we’re in an extremely challenging environment,” says Bahia’s Agriculture and Livestock Federation (FAEB) chairman Humberto Miranda Water is harvested by pressurization and taken to a main canal that supply a network of secondary canals The irrigation reaches the plants via dripping but this model of water consumption causes more evaporation loss in the lower middle region of the São Francisco River It irrigates a total area of 18,600 hectares starting from Lago de Sobradinho investors and entrepreneurs from Brazil’s northeast south and southeast regions and even from Japan started banking mostly on two fruit crops that otherwise don’t belong to this landscape – mangoes and grapes thrive in an environment surrounded by cacti The region known as the São Francisco Valley comprises four municipalities in Pernambuco state – Santa Maria da Boa Vista and Petrolina – and four in Bahia – Juazeiro These are just two of the five Brazilian states where the São Francisco River goes through It rises in Minas Gerais and falls on the Atlantic Ocean between Sergipe and Alagoas According to data from the National Confederation of Agriculture (CNA) in 2022 municipalities Juazeiro and Petrolina produced approximately 600,000 tonnes of mangoes and 300,000 tonnes of grapes although the semi-arid region also grows wine grapes From Japan to UAE, via Brazil’s Sertão Bronzed mangoes to suit taste of consumers The new frontier of Miolo in northeast Brazil Fruits: Brazil grows many but exports few Ninety percent of these mangoes and 98% of these grapes are exported genetic improvements developed by the United States resulted in sweeter cultivars with traits that please consumers like Tommy Mangoes and grapes are prevalent in the region Forty percent of the total planted area in the São Francisco Valley grows mangoes Exporting comes after a long productive process that was only made possible by harvesting the river’s water to irrigate the semi-arid region And the results are bountiful: 95% of the exports are shipped by sea from ports in Salvador The remaining 5% are dispatched by air mostly via airports in Campinas and Guarulhos This is the leading route taking fruits from the São Francisco Valley to Arab countries The leading client of grapes and particularly mangoes in the Middle East and North Africa is currently the United Arab Emirates – according to CNA in 2023 Brazil exported USD 572,100 worth of fresh mangoes to the UAE of which USD 317,400 came from Bahia and Pernambuco states Fresh grape exports from Brazil to the Arab countries added up to USD 672,300 with USD 150,9000 coming from these states Air is the leading shipping method to the Arab countries as the maritime route takes approximately 40 days There are also indirect exports via trading posts like the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands Egypt is also a market receiving Brazilian fruits but in smaller amount “Sometimes a cargo plane from São Paulo lands here but that’s not the rule,” said Petrolina’s Farmers Union president Jailson Lira The journalist traveled by the invitation of CNA A journalist with stints in daily newspapers and press offices he holds a master’s degree from the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon and a postgraduate degree in business communications from the Methodist University of São Paulo The Gulf country has Ponte de Arame de Lourido is one of the places near Porto that is worth a visit. After almost three years ofrehabilitation, it was inaugurated at the beginning of March this year. Jenni Doggett own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment Penn State provides funding as a founding partner of The Conversation US View all partners For months, President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil has insisted the coronavirus is not a serious threat Beyond instituting a national lockdown in mid-March his government has left 209 million Brazilians largely without federal help during the pandemic Since other federal aid does not appear to be forthcoming, neighborhood associations, churches, community groups and unions are stepping in to support struggling Brazilians One of Brazil’s civilian-led initiatives goes well beyond the average mutual aid society an activist group called the Landless Workers Movement is providing food medical care and other pandemic support to hundreds of thousands of Brazilians nationwide The Landless Workers Movement was born in 1984 after groups of landless families began to occupy rural estates that were laying fallow Brazil has extremely unequal land distribution One percent of the population owns about 50% of the arable land Because Brazilian law requires land to be used for a “social function,” the occupations effectively forced the government to buy up these estates and allow squatters to farm there not through a land deed but through “use rights.” Since 1984 the Landless Workers Movement has won such land access for 1.5 million aspiring farmers My research on this Brazilian agricultural movement examines what happens to rural squatters after they win land New farmers need more than land – they need a home the Landless Workers Movement organizes rallies and protests pushing the Brazilian government to support agricultural communities it also has a network of institutions dedicated to serving Brazilian squatter farmers In partnership with state and local governments in 23 of Brazil’s 26 states, Landless Workers activists help to run 170 community health clinics, 100 agricultural cooperatives, 66 food processing factories and 1,900 farmer associations, according to the movement’s own count are largely funded by the government but staffed and governed by the Landless Workers Movement As I documented in my 2019 book on the Landless Workers education initiatives the group also runs 2,000 primary and secondary schools and co-manages degree programs at 80 universities Its education system has served more than 400,000 students since 1984 all these resources are being redirected toward the coronavirus pandemic The Landless Workers Movement is also running a blood donation campaign and producing rubbing alcohol Some 10,000 teachers who belong to the Landless Workers Movement are helping Brazilian public schools adapt to remote learning To a public steeped in President Bolsonaro’s coronavirus skepticism the movement’s national communications network of newspapers social media and live streaming – normally used to share organization news – is now broadcasting health information Though the Landless Workers Movement is a rural initiative, its pandemic response operates in cities, too To feed hungry families in Santa Maria da Boa Vista a poor municipality in northeastern Brazil activist Ronaldo Rodriguez asked his fellow Landless Workers for donations his team collected three tons of produce from farmers who’d obtained their land with the movement’s help “We are practicing social distancing but also community solidarity,” said Rodriguez a rural school supervisor who graduated college with assistance from the Landless Workers Movement Criticism of government remains central to the Landless Workers Movement’s work. With other activist groups, the Landless Workers Movement is demanding that the Bolsonaro administration support quarantine efforts invest in public health and send food and financial assistance to Brazilians “The current government has done nothing to help,” says Indiane Witcel, a 26-year-old economist who works as an accountant in one of the movement’s agricultural cooperatives, COOPAN Witcel was born at COOPAN, in Rio Grande do Sul state, near Brazil’s border with Uruguay, back when it was a squatter encampment. Her mother helped occupy and cultivate the land using the Landless Workers Movement’s preferred sustainable farming methods COOPAN has donated 12 tons of its organic rice to poor urban neighborhoods in nearby Porto Alegre city “Solidarity should be part of everyday practice,” Witcel told me “Now more than ever when so many people are in difficult situations.” With hospitals already overflowing with patients and COVID-19 infections still climbing Brazil’s already difficult situation is likely to worsen The Landless Workers Movement has a message for Brazilians during this crisis, promoted on Twitter and in its media outlets. Like its coronavirus response, the hashtag slogan combines pandemic assistance with an implicit rebuke to Brazil’s president It’s #FicaEmCasaMasNãoEmSilêncio: “Stay home but not silent.” Nossos serviços estão apresentando instabilidade no momento Algumas informações podem não estar disponíveis Forget that only cactuses exist in the Sertão and that people and animals suffer from water shortage The picture is completely different in the São Francisco Valley a region around this river in the states of Pernambuco In the field from October this year up to February 2018 the Census of Agriculture is tasked with collecting data on the vegetal and animal production in this area 16 enumerators are tasked with collecting information on nearly 5,300 agricultural establishments To assure that every area is covered by the census the IBGE hired four boatmen to take the enumerators to the islands and guide them as explained by Francisco José de Carvalho person in charge of the subarea of Petrolina "Eight islands in the Old Chico in Petrolina produce agricultural products They are 11 in the municipality of Santa Maria da Boa Vista The enumerators use to carry private motorcycles in the boats "We had a curious case: the enumerator in charge of the Massangano Island in Petrolina fell in love with that region enumerated 130 establishments and told that he intends to get back to live there once and for all" tells Francisco José about the island that is a highlight in the production of mangoes São Francisco River crosses agricultural properties in Pernambuco  the first public projects of irrigation in that region took place in the 1960s The most developed irrigation hub in the valley is located around the cities of Juazeiro (BA) and Petrolina (PE) According to information from the Development Company of the São Francisco Valley - Codevasf seven Public Projects of Irrigation - PPIs are installed in that region two of them in Pernambuco: Senator Nilo Coelho and Bebedouro; and five in Bahia: Curaçá the most significant results of the Gross Value of Production in 2016 came from the PPIs of Senator Nilo Coelho (R$1.39 billion) Bebedouro (R$44 million) and Mandacaru (R$9 million) these irrigation projects are expected to generate about 81 thousand indirect jobs and 54 thousand direct ones According to the Codevasf Management Report the area cultivated in the projects in 2016 was of 54,015 hectares either through temporary or permanent crops The history of the development in that region is tightly coupled with that of the São Francisco River from where water is taken to the plantations "The irrigation using water river began in a comfortable and beautiful way spending much water through the use of the less-efficient techniques of conventional sprinkling and center-pivot irrigation as a significant part of the water sprinkled is lost due to the wind" teacher at the Agronomy Department of the UFRPE like the techniques of micro-sprinkling and dripping Codevasf has also been emphasizing the efficient use of water and soil "Codevasf and the Ministry of National Integration developed and provided the producers with projects to modernize the irrigation the farmers can look for funding to convert the conventional irrigation to the micro-sprinkling system Mango irrigated crop in São Francisco Valley    These changes in terms of the way of production are being noticed by the 10th Census of Agriculture which gives her a lot of experience when applying the Census questionnaire I used to work in a number of those sectors I already knew the reality in each one of them" "The reality 10 years ago is quite different than that of today I managed to find lots with more than ten persons in charge: the father divided them among his children and each one had his/her part" explains the enumerator is enumerating establishments in the Nilo Coelho project It is hard to find the owners in the lots in the afternoon Many times the questionnaire is applied while the persons are working in the plantation The weather directly influences the life of those living in the countryside The temperature were slightly lower in Petrolina this year the producers have been complaining to use more pesticides to control pests which lead to an increase in the production costs" "The Petrolina-Juazeiro axis concentrates the biggest fruitculture hub in Brazil teacher at the Federal University of Pernambuco and holding a PhD in agricultural economy According to the information from Vale Export that region produces about 604 thousand tonnes of mangoes and 252 thousand tonnes of grapes The fruits are sold in the domestic market and also exported the major importers of these fruits in 2017 are the Netherlands Many people might get surprised to know that that area in the Northeastern Sertão stands out in terms of planting grapes Table grapes – consumed in natura – and wine grapes – used to produce wine and sparkling wine – are produced as well as the agribusiness uses low-quality fruits to produce juices The São Francisco Valley is a very particular place for cutting-edge fruitculture explains the agronomist Rosimar Musser: "Staggering the production is the major differential it is possible to let a plant rest whenever you want and also harvest it whenever you want we manage to have two harvests per year rather than only one as in most localities" Eleven hectares of table grapes have been planted in the Liberdade Agropecuária Farm being the United States the major destination All this is only possible thanks to irrigation" states the administrative assistant of this property where 250 to 300 tonnes of mangoes are produced per year "Employment is not a problem for the courageous ones" Up-to-date data show the economic and social development of this municipality the Petrolina GDP changed from R$725.4 million in 2010 to R$5.2 billion in 2014 and the Municipal Human Development Index - HDI-M from 0.580 in 2000 to 0.697 in 2010" Opening the gates for Census of Agriculture The main task of the Census of Agriculture is to collect up-to-date information on the agricultural sector it is expected to collect data relative to about 309 thousand agricultural establishments Nearly 850 enumerators are visiting every city in the state which is divided into 18 subareas and 49 data collection stations Pernambuco was the sixth state in Brazil with the highest number of units Enumerator Allan Barbosa interviews rural producer This young man is an expert in the IBGE surveys having worked in the Census of Agriculture 2006 and in the 2010 Population Census collecting data is more difficult when the population is not so aware on the survey and is wary to provide information technical coordinator of the Census in Pernambuco highlights the importance of the collaboration: "We want to portray the reality to actually see that is being produced in Brazil in order to develop appropriate public policies to this sector assuring the exercise of citizenship for everyone" The greatest mission of the Census of Agriculture is to portray the rural Brazil like that of the enumerator Deuzimar´s family who recalls: "I really experienced what facing the sunlight is The reality is too sad for those depending on the plantation: if you don´t work from Pernambuco Infograph: Pedro Vidal Images: Codevasf/Dissemination and Edmilson Siebra © 2018 IBGE -
