Kress hosted superintendents from across Southern California at the Santaluz Club to showcase its new robotic mowers and electric power equipment
Santaluz Club director of agronomy Jeff Miller spoke to attendees about the time he’s spent with Kress’ mowers on his course
“We’ve learned how much they help our entire program here as far as noise
fuel consumption and improving the rough,” Miller told the more than a dozen superintendents gathered at his clubhouse
“It’s hard to quantify some of the other benefits
like the compaction and reducing the number of tracks from heavy units going through areas.”
Miller has plenty of experience with robotic mowers on his course, having used mowers from a different manufacturer before he adopted Kress’ units for his rough. Santaluz also utilizes larger mowers for its fairways from Firefly Automatix — for more, read the May 2024 issue of Golfdom
The most significant selling point for Kress’ robotic mowers is the singular GPS antenna that a course needs for a full fleet to operate. According to Tim Barrier, CGCS, a former superintendent at Rancho Santa Fe GC
now serving as golf business development manager for Kress
the antenna is free to install and doesn’t require a subscription to use
allowing other Kress robotic mower users — including other golf courses
homeowners and others — to connect to that network
then you’ve got the whole course and surrounding area set,” Barrier said
“We’re going to Seattle tomorrow to do some training
This will be one of those golf courses we call one of our lighthouse properties where they have a full deployment
and then we can attract other people from the industry to come and see that deployment and educate the people who live in that area.”
the cost savings have also been significant
Miller estimates that using battery-powered equipment
Miller adds that savings have been even more significant
“We spend 2,200 hours yearly mowing the rough using traditional methods and blowing all the clippings,” he said
and you have to do that when the golf course is closed
the time savings have extended further than the more apparent savings from time spent manually mowing turf thanks to the unique way Kress’ mowers learn the area they’ll be mowing
“This technology is unique in that the pilot comes off
You map your area and put it back on the mower,” Barrier said
“It’s unique; nobody has anything like that
You dump the old map and start a new one without having to drive the unit around.”
“The other point that saves you time is that you’re not driving the unit around,” Miller added
so I can take the pilot off any other unit
Having the flexibility of taking another unit and mapping it separately whenever you want to: a wet area
it’s so much easier to make adjustments.”
Miller is a major proponent of the switch to robotic mowers
For superintendents in California and beyond thinking about starting to utilize autonomous mowers
he urges them to dive right in after doing their research
It’s almost like a no-brainer,” he said
“You’re going to have to do this
After two or three months of installing the mowers
I sold my two (Groundsmaster 4500s); that’s how confident I was.”

The Santaluz Club in San Diego, Calif., is the world’s first golf community to deploy FireFly Automatix’s Autonomous Mowing Platform (AMP)
self-driving 100-inch-wide professional mowers for more than two months on its 300-acre championship golf course
Santaluz has not only seen increased productivity by using AMP
it now expects to realize annual savings/gained value of about $115,000 a year
member-owned community centered around a 7,112-yard
The club has previously introduced the use of smaller robotic mowers and different internet-connected devices
systems designed to help maintain/support the course
After dealing with challenges such as rising capital equipment costs
increasing wages and growing environmental concerns
there was standing water everywhere,” Miller said
“I would never let a traditional mower operate in those conditions
But with the independent drive system to each of the four AMP wheels
The AMP just slowed down and didn’t rut the fairway
and it was an easy decision to move forward with the AMPs from FireFly Automatix.”
First unveiled a year ago at the annual Turfgrass Producers International convention
the now-shipping and now-named “AMP” is a professional mowing platform that was purpose-built and designed from the ground up to be an electric vehicle
not a gas- or diesel-propelled system retrofitted with EV technologies
select AMP technological highlights include:
Two AMP’s from FireFly Automatix mowing at The Santaluz Club in San Diego
the AMP delivers optimized height of cut capabilities in increments of 1/100th of an inch (0.01-in.) and reel-to-reel bedknife in increments of 5/1000th of an inch (0.005-in.)
we mowed two to three times a week (with diesel-powered
with our three AMPs completing the entire course in 4-4.5 hours
we’ll save about 2,000 hours per year
which works out to about $50,000 in annual labor costs
now that we’re mowing six times a week
if you take the value that we’re gaining (the OpEx costs)
we’ll actually double that amount value-wise
we’ll save an additional $15,000 a year in hard costs for diesel fuel
So that pushes our total savings/value gained each year to close to $115,000.”
You won't be seeing Chargers legend Philip Rivers in the powder blue and gold anymore
and your chances of seeing him at a San Diego-area grocery store in the off season just became a lot slimmer

just put his Santaluz mansion on the market
The home is an errant tee shot away from the Santaluz Club golf course within an up-scale residential community in San Diego's Black Mountain Ranch neighborhood
Rivers' former abode features everything you'd expect for an NFL star
The home sits on an acre with views of the Pacific Ocean and features six bedrooms and six-and-a-half baths, according to the L.A. Times
so it appears the Chargers' all-time leader in games
and passing touchdowns will be settling into something bigger in the Hoosier State

The Santa Luz project is an open-pit gold mining operation located in the state of Bahia
It is owned and operated by Canadian mining company Equinox Gold
The Santa Luz project is an open-pit gold mining operation in the state of Bahia
The open-pit mine was operated by precious metals exploration and production company Yamana Gold from mid-2013 to mid-2014 and was placed on care and maintenance in September 2014 due to poor metallurgical recovery results. The ownership changed hands over the years before Equinox, the current operator, acquired the gold mine in March 2020
Full-scale construction of the Santa Luz project was initiated by Equinox in November 2020
The project has an estimated initial pre-production capital investment of approximately $103m
It is a brownfield mine with the majority of the infrastructure already installed at the site
An updated feasibility study released in November 2020 envisages an estimated life of mine (LOM) of 9.5 years
including eight years of mining and 1.5 years of processing stockpiles
Mining activities commenced in June 2021 with a focus on removing waste and developing infrastructure such as access roads
dumps and ore storage areas for a pre-stripping campaign before full-scale mining in late 2021
The project is expected to achieve its first gold pour in the first quarter (Q1) 2022
The Santa Luz project is located approximately 35km north of the town of Santa Luz
The property is approximately 240km away from the city of Salvador in the Maria Preta mining district
It encompasses an area of approximately 48,599.25ha
including 36 exploration permits and six mining concessions
The deposit is situated in the Rio Itapicurú Greenstone Belt (RIGB) on the north-eastern portion of the São Francisco Craton
Considered the largest greenstone belt in the craton
the RIGB extends approximately 100km in a north-south trend with widths ranging between 30km and 50km
The host rocks at the Santa Luz project include sedimentary rocks
and felsic to intermediate volcanic and tuffaceous rocks
The volcanic rocks and dioritic and dacitic intrusions are typically porphyritic
with fine‐ to medium‐grained quartz and feldspar phenocrysts
The gold mineralisation at the Santa Luz project is associated with quartz-carbonate-sulphide veins and breccia filling hosted in sheared and hydrothermally altered rocks within a district-scale shear zone
The mineralised veins occur as two main types of quartz veins with white to grey foliation‐parallel type being the most common while the other is thicker and normally black or dark grey
The proven and probable mineral reserves at the Santa Luz project were estimated at 24.9 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.34g/t gold (Au) for 1.07 million ounces (Moz) in contained gold
The Santa Luz mine will be operated as a truck and excavator open-pit mine that involves traditional open-pit mining methods of drilling
Mining operations will be executed from three pits
including C1 and two small pits at the Antas 3 deposit
The overall waste to ore stripping ratio for the operation is 4.3:1
The pit design features a minimum mining width of 20m with pit bench heights at 10m and mining proceeding in two 5m flitches with a safety berm every 10m to ensure safe loading and hauling
The ramp road grades are limited to a maximum of 10% with approximately 25m wide from toe to crest for the C1 and Antes 3 deposits
The mining operations are based on an average and maximum mining rate of approximately 15.3 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) and 22Mtpa respectively
The C1 deposit will have a life of mine (LOM) of nine years
while Antas 3 will have a LOM of six years
The run of mine (ROM) ore will undergo crushing in a primary jaw crusher followed by a cone crusher arranged in an open circuit. The crushed ore will be ground in a semi-autogenous (SAG) mill and a ball mill operating in series
The screen undersize will be pumped to the primary mill cyclones while the combined SAG mill cyclone overflow and the ball mill discharge will be transferred to the secondary mill cyclones
The screen undersize will be fed into the gravity concentrators which will
feed the intensive leach reactor to produce a pregnant leach solution (PLS)
The PLS will undergo leaching in a resin in leach (RIL) circuit to produce resin in the form of spherical beads approximately 1mm in diameter
The loaded resin will be passed through a screen to separate the resin from the ore slurry
It will be washed and eluted in a closed circuit with four electrowinning cells
The eluted resin will be washed with a caustic solution to neutralise the remaining acid content before being recycled to the RIL tanks
gold and other metals in the eluate will be electrodeposited on the cathodes that are periodically washed
Oxidisers and flux will be added to the dried cathode sludge and the resultant solution will be smelted to produce doré metal and slag
The metal produced at the end of the process will be an alloy of copper and gold
which will be shipped to a custom refinery
where the slag will be further processed for the recovery of coarse metal and recycling to the plant feed
The gold project will also involve the processing of dacitic‐high‐sulphide ore mined from the Antas 3 deposit in the final year of operation
The ore will be floated in the flotation circuit while the concentrate will be filtered in a new filtering plant
The resultant filter cake will be stored for shipping off-site
either to copper smelters or other toll milling plants
The Santa Luz project area is accessible by road from Salvador via highway BR‐324 to Feira de Santana
A municipal dirt road from Santa Luz links the project site
The power supply required for the project is sourced from an existing power line connected to the Brazilian grid
The project is served by Companhia de Eletricidade do Estado da Bahia (COELBA)
under a contract that provides 0.5MW during peak hours and 10MW in non‐peak hours
All raw water supply needs are met from the Rio Itapicurú and 14 groundwater wells
The project receives approximately 30m³ of potable water a week under a contract with Bahia’ state water utility Empresa Baiana de Águas e Saneamento (EMBASA)
The mining contract for the project was awarded to mining services company U&M Mineração e Construção (U&M)
SLR Consulting subsidiary Roscoe Postle Associates (RPA) and Ausenco Engineering Canada were engaged to jointly prepare the technical report for the Santa Luz project
The technical report was published in November 2020

A North County attorney faces multiple criminal charges in connection with a crash that killed a nanny and seriously injured a toddler officials announced Monday
was killed when an SUV ran a red light at the intersection of Camino Del Sur and Via Verrazzano on Feb
Mendez was pushing a 14-month-old toddler in a stroller at the time of the crash
Mendez suffered critical injuries and later died at the hospital
The toddler was hospitalized in intensive care for several days for injuries including shattered spleen
failure to stop at a red light and failure to yield to a pedestrian within a crosswalk
NBC 7 San Diego ran a check on the vehicle’s license plate and learned the car was registered to a Jeffrey Padilla who lives near the scene of the accident
A man who identified himself as a Mr. Padilla answered the door of the home and said his wife was too distraught to issue a statement.
she’s gone through enough,” Padilla said at the time
“There’s no way we can give a statement right now
Padilla answered the door at the same address Monday night holding a baby

Her arraignment date is set for March 18 at 12:30 p.m
An emotional day in court Friday ended with a judge ordering 48 hours behind bars for a woman who pleaded guilty to running a red light
killing a nanny and seriously injuring a toddler in a crash in Santaluz
Christine Padilla, an attorney from Del Sur, pleaded guilty last month to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, running a red light and failure to yield at a crosswalk in connection with a fatal accident that happened on Feb. 1.
Padilla, who had given birth just one day earlier, was driving an SUV and ran a red light at the intersection of Camino Del Sur and Via Verrazzano
Click here for a full TIMELINE of this case
A police report from the fatal collision later revealed that Padilla admitted she was sleep-deprived on the day of the accident
The report said Padilla told officers she was driving home from her sister’s house and knew she ran a red light
but by the time she realized what she had done
it was too late for Mendez and the toddler
Padilla told officers: “I’m sorry – I’m sleep-deprived and I just looked up and I’m like
On Friday – more than four months after the tragic crash – Padilla appeared in a standing-room-only courtroom for sentencing
Watch raw video of Padilla heading into court here.
Emotions were palpable inside the courtroom, as Mendez’s family members and the injured toddler’s mother begged a judge to give Padilla jail time
spoke of the constant pain she and her 14-year-old brother have endured with the sudden loss of their mother
My mom and I were best friends; she is the one I told everything to
I just can’t explain the pain we are going through right now,” said Barragan
“She didn’t even get to see [my brother and I] graduate from high school
“She took things away from us that we will never get back,” said Fomon
adding that Padilla has shown “no true remorse” and has only been concerned “about herself and her agony” since the deadly accident
“Your concern for yourself has trumped all else,” said Fomon
A probation officer recommended Padilla be sentenced to house arrest and probation
who said he read every letter submitted by both sides -- including more than 60 letters from Padilla's family and friends -- said he was at first inclined to sentence Padilla to the punishment recommended by the probation department
After listening to statements from Mendez’s family and the toddler’s family
Judge Gill decided to sentence Padilla to 48 hours in jail after she serves 180 days under electronic surveillance and house arrest
She must also remain on probation for three years
Judge Gill said Padilla’s willingness to plead guilty played a big factor in her sentencing Friday
He said he believes Padilla is genuinely remorseful
Padilla also got her chance to address the court and Mendez’s family
saying she’s “deeply sorry” for their loss and hopes God will help them heal
“I have no words to express the depth of my remorse
Padilla said she can’t explain why she ran the red light
Hospital records show she was not given any medications while in the hospital before the accident
Fomon called the letter she received from Padilla "incredibly self-serving and transparent" and said Padilla failed to "take ownership" for her actions on the day of the crash in the note
"I received your letter and realized that your main concern has been and continued to be you," said Fomon
"I don't doubt you are sorry this all happened; I just question where the victims fall in your totem pole of remorse."
said his client has admitted liability and wanted to settle the case
Mendez's family has also filed a civil suit against Padilla arguing she was reckless and negligent on the day of the accident.

At the 2019 Golf Industry Show, Cub Cadet exhibited equipment they believe will address the challenges facing turf managers: the next generation of the RG3 robotic mower — the Infinicut RGX
“We’re taking the success of the Infinicut mowers — used at venues like Real Madrid
and Toronto FC — and applying it to the success of the RG3 robotic mowers and the result is the Infinicut RGX,” said Tony Whelan
director of sales & marketing of Cub Cadet’s specialty turf products division
The RG3 mowers are powered by lead-acid batteries
and the new RGX models will have all lithium batteries and a new positioning system
The company demoed the new model for the first time at the Golfdom Summit in December
Whelan was chipper after spending a day on the show floor and demonstrating the mower at San Diego’s Santaluz Club at 5:30 the morning prior
superintendent at Perry Park Country Club in Larkspur
uses the RG3 mower on his golf course and was present for the demonstration at Santaluz
His 24-second video of the mower from the demo had 7,000 views within 24 hours
Daigle went fully autonomous last year with four RG3s and says that there is a clear difference with walk mowing greens and the robotic RG3s
due to the dual-mowing and rolling function of the RG3
He’s been seeing additional benefits as well
we’re now raking bunkers five days a week – we previously did it three days – and we string trim the course now as the first job of the day
The Infinicut RGX mower will be available in late 2019 or early 2020
and Cub Cadet is currently in the heart of the field testing period
The company will start demonstrating the mower at regional events in North America throughout 2019
One of the four Cub Cadet RG3 robotic greens mowers in the lineup at Perry Park Country Club in Larkspur
GCSAA Class A superintendent at The Santaluz Club in San Diego
told his assistant superintendent last Tuesday after a phone call with Tony Whelan
director of sales and marketing for Cub Cadet
The news Whelan had called Miller to deliver
Cub Cadet is shelving its autonomous turf mower program
Whelan cited technical issues with what was supposed to be Cub Cadet’s newest autonomous mower
introduced the RG3 robotic greens mower to the market in 2015
The RGX was scheduled to be released sometime in 2020
“The message is that we take our commitment to quality extremely seriously,” Whelan told GCM last week
“We are unwilling to bring any product to the market that doesn’t meet our customers’ expectations and specifications.”
He owns five RG3 mowers and has another on loan
and says implementing them has saved time and money at his club
Miller says he was planning to upgrade to the RGX
which was to feature a real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS system (RG3 did not have RTK GPS)
The RGX was showcased in January at the 2020 Golf Industry Show in Orlando
When he spoke with GCM in the days after receiving what he described as “out of the blue” news
Miller was busy seeking greens-mowing alternatives and still trying to process Cub Cadet’s decision
Definitely shocked,” the 20-year GCSAA member says
The clubs that have been using the RG3 — Whelan says “it was a small number” — were not only contacted by Whelan
but also received a letter from Cub Cadet about the decision
Whelan says Cub Cadet will continue to support the units as it works with its customers on a transition plan for each specific site
and he adds that a plan is in place to return the mowers to Cub Cadet
and we’re going to work with you to transition out into an alternate method,” Whelan says
which was first reported by Golf Course Industry
was made following a six-month field trial of the RGX in the U.S
we uncovered a couple of technical challenges that were going to not allow us to meet certain specifications,” Whelan says
“One of them was significant enough that we had to put the project on hold
but the decision is based on our core value
We’re just not going to provide something to the market that doesn’t meet the customers’ expectations and needs
We believe this technical challenge is a pretty big challenge for us
are refocusing a lot of our resources and efforts in other areas as we consider how to solve this.”
Whelan would not elaborate on details of the technical issues
is another superintendent who has been using the RG3
a 29-year GCSAA member who oversees Valley Brook Country Club in McMurray
says he thought Whelan was calling him last week to discuss moving forward with the RGX
“I thought we were going to be the first club to have it,” says Shaw
who tested the RGX and planned to get six of the units for
The Cub Cadet RGX prototype during testing at Valley Brook Country Club in McMurray
“I felt they (Cub Cadet) were on the right track
It (testing the RGX) was successful on Poa annua/bentgrass
Our members see the difference (in greens maintained with the RG3)
They see the same perfection on putting greens I see.”
he says he has been looking at other options since last year
“I assured everyone at our club (last fall) that I had a Plan B,” Shaw says
who also has five of Cub Cadet’s Infinicut walk-behind mowers
says he will miss saving the approximately 13,000 hours of labor he eliminated over the more than three-year period of using the RG3
which allowed his crew to handle other tasks while the RG3 did its thing
“That’s (saving) a quarter of a million dollars,” says Miller
Although Whelan indicated that a potential revival of autonomous mowers at Cub Cadet is a never-say-never scenario
Cub Cadet is focused on its other products
“I don’t want to create false expectations
We are describing it right now that it is on indefinite hold,” Whelan says
Justin Daigle, GCSAA Class A superintendent at Perry Park Country Club in Larkspur, Colo., delivered a passionate presentation about autonomous mowers last month at the Golf Industry Show
He is among those who use the RG3 — he had three years remaining on a five-year lease of the product at the time of the announcement and was looking forward to the RGX
Daigle says Cub Cadet has been “super helpful” in assisting with the transition following last week’s news
but the turn of events is still disappointing
“I just don’t see another product anytime soon
that produced a surface like the RG3,” says Daigle
whose club leased four RG3 mowers for a fair market value of $36,000 annually
Daigle says he has been contacted by other companies about autonomous mower possibilities
“Autonomous mowers in our industry are not dead,” Daigle says
Editor’s note: Read much more about the future of autonomous technology in the golf industry in the April 2020 issue of GCM

“The response has been overwhelming and emotional,” he says. “I know from experience that if your child is an inpatient at Rady’s Children’s Hospital
For us to provide a free service like this inside their temporary home has brought so much joy and appreciation to many families who are going through the most difficult time of their lives.”
The Campbells are also active in the CHARGE syndrome community. They’re fundraising to create a CHARGE syndrome center at Rady Children’s and are sponsoring the inaugural CHARGE Into the Future gala at the Santaluz Club on April 22 to support the effort
“We believe deeply in giving back to the communities we live and work in,” Austin says
“It’s important to my wife and I to offer support in any way possible to families who have children with CHARGE syndrome.”
They also offer hope for other families of children with CHARGE syndrome
Though she still sees a dozen specialists on a regular basis and will continue to do so throughout her life
“We are very fortunate that she is doing so well
because many CHARGE kids really struggle with many more medical complications
that many times result in a short lifespan
“She has truly inspired us to become better people and to want to give back to the Ronald McDonald House
We wouldn’t change a thing about her or the life path that we travel as special needs parents.”

The fire broke out at about 10:45 a.m. near Del Norte High School in 4S Ranch, a community east of Rancho Santa Fe, said Lee Swanson, San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman.
Firefighters were trying to contain the blaze, dubbed the Bernardo fire, as it approached Fairbanks Ranch at about 2:30 p.m., Swanson said.
Mandatory evacuations were ordered in the Santa Luz and Camino Del Sur areas, Swanson said. Torrey Pines High School is being used as an emergency shelter.
The number of firefighters responding to the fire was unknown, Swanson said.
“We keep ordering more units,” he said. “It’s well in excess of 100.”

Canadian mining company Equinox Gold (TSX:EQX) (NYSE:EQX)
a gold mining company with seven operating mines
has begun mining activities and preparation at its Santa Luz mine in Brazil
efforts are focused on removing waste rom two locations and developing access roads
and ore storage areas in preparation for a pre-stripping campaign
This is set to be finished before the company begins mining ore in late 2021
Equinox Gold (TSX:EQX) (NYSE:EQX) claims that construction is on track for Q4 2021 commissioning and pour gold in W1 2022. The Santa Luz mine is an exciting project for Equinox Gold (TSX:EQX) (NYSE:EQX) as it is expected to produce 110,000 gold ounces every year for the first five years in operation
This would be a big boost to the company’s production numbers and bottom line
The mine is a brownfield past-producing mine
with most site services and infrastructure already set up
Equinox Gold (TSX:EQX) (NYSE:EQX) is able to jump into the project faster and bring it to production faster because of this
Investors have received this project positively
maintaining long-term returns for investors
with the stock up more than 10% since March 31
The mine was approved for full-scale construction on November 9
2020 making this start date very quick for Equinox Gold (TSX:EQX) (NYSE:EQX)
this is a key piece of the puzzle in the company’s mission to be a 1 million-ounces-per-year gold producer
The first gold pour at the open-pit mine is targeted for Q1 2022
Santa Luz is expected to produce 903,000 ounces of gold and generate $436 million in after-tax net cash flow
This is assuming a base case $1500/oz gold price
but this could very well change with the overall rise in commodities pushing gold higher as it recovers from the lows of 2020
The progress on this mine is a significant step toward the company’s goal of producing 1 million ounces per year, adding about 100,000 ounces to the annual production numbers. The team at Equinox Gold (TSX:EQX) (NYSE:EQX) has over 500 years of cumulative experience
with numerous resources companies launched and grown under their watch
along with 50 mines brought to production in some of the world’s most challenging but rewarding jurisdictions

fast-moving brush fires in San Diego and Santa Barbara counties burned hundreds of acres Tuesday and forced mandatory evacuations in both areas
With even higher temperatures forecast for Wednesday
fire officials throughout Southern California were gearing up for more hot spots and warning residents to remain vigilant

"I'm certainly well taken care of in terms of food and clothes," he said
"Money has no utility to me beyond a certain point."
With 275,000 acres across the United States
The vast majority of that — about 242,00 acres — is farmland
"I have invested in these farms to make them more productive and create more jobs," Gates said in a Reddit Ask Me Anything last year
"There isn't some grand scheme involved — in fact
all these decisions are made by a professional investment team."
But he also owns dozens of properties across Washington
a number of the properties were transferred from one trust to another — so it's hard to discern who owns exactly what
as all of their trusts are linked to the same Seattle bank
along with details about transfers around the Gates divorce
Neither Gates nor French Gates responded to requests for comment from Business Insider
a wealthy suburb of Seattle that's home to many tech titans
Gates owns at least 12 parcels of land there
Purchased for about $34 million between 1988 and 2009
the current combined assessed value of the Lake Washington-adjacent properties is $183.5 million
It was also built to be energy-efficient and technologically advanced
with a heating and cooling system that automatically adjusts to guests' liking and lights that turn on and off automatically as people go from room to room
"My house is being designed and constructed so that it's a bit ahead of its time," Gates wrote in his 1995 book "The Road Ahead." It is made of wood
One of those people could have been his then-wife, Melinda French Gates
whom he married after he had already begun work on the house
While she changed his plans for the kitchen and added her own office space
"We won't have that house forever," she told The New York Times in 2019
"I'm actually really looking forward to the day that Bill and I live in a 1,500-square-foot house."
Many of Gates' homes are situated on or near the grounds of a golf course
"Bill got into golf in the same addictive way he gets into anything else," Steve Ballmer, his Harvard classmate and former Microsoft CEO, told Time in 1997
In 1999, he purchased a $12.5 million home on the grounds of Indian Wells' exclusive Vintage Club
known for its Tom Fazio-designed golf courses
The six-bedroom home is now valued closer to $15 million
Gates was spotted at the club in 2021
and was more recently seen at the Indian Wells Open
Gates amassed a small real estate empire in San Diego County
and it started with a property in Rancho Santa Fe
It's part of the guarded and gated community on the grounds of the Del Mar Country Club
which reportedly costs six figures to join
Like some of the other properties in the Gates portfolio
the Del Mar Country Club house was transferred "due to the dissolution of a marriage" in 2021 — the same year Bill and Melinda divorced — according to property records
It is likely now solely owned by one of the two Gates
Like the rest of the San Diego Country properties
Rancho Paseana was transferred between trusts in 2021
around the time of Bill and Melinda's divorce
The Gates purchased another house about 10 minutes from Rancho Panseana a couple of weeks later in 2014 for $3.2 million
The Santaluz Club features Rees Jones-designed golf course
it was transferred between trusts in 2021 — and 5% is owned by the French Family Trust
and Kristin French — likely relatives of Melinda
Gates and then-wife Melinda purchased their fourth San Diego property, this 5,800-square-foot beach house, for $43 million in Del Mar, California
Bill Gates has long been reported to be a member of the exclusive Yellowstone Club — a ski and golf club tucked away in Big Sky Montana
Montana is a nondisclosure state when it comes to real estate, and the Yellowstone Club is very private in what it releases about its owners
but a 2009 county resolution helped point to which home belonged to the Gates
has the same tax address as Gates' many other properties and was linked to his lawyer and family office
Its assessed market value is $29.4 million — up from $5.8 million in the 2009 county record
There are no photos available of the home online
but property records indicate the main house is 6,993 square feet
It's almost guaranteed to match the surrounding homes
The club's annual dues were $41,500 in 2018
the most recent year for which data are publicly available
plus another $12,000 for the property owners' association
That buys access to the club's 15,200 acres
The home switched hands in 2021 — the same year Bill and Melinda divorced
A trust connected to a Seattle bank used by both of the Gates is the property's new owner
All signs point to one of the two still owning it
estate in tony Palm Beach County is the main home of Jennifer Gates Nassar's horseback riding facilities
He's added a basketball court and pond to one
The equestrian center was originally even larger
but Gates sold 5.5 acres for $26 million in 2022
He's one of many billionaires with properties in the horse-loving community
Michael Bloomberg and Laurene Powell Jobs have homes nearby — and daughters who ride

LOS ANGELES — Every Hollywood idea has to start somewhere
