Volume 3 - 2024 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fenvh.2024.1249457 This article is part of the Research TopicAerosol Pollution and Air Quality in CitiesView all 5 articles in addition to the significant contribution of anthropogenic gases such as NOx and SO2 atmospheric ammonia (NH3) plays a crucial role as the primary basic gaseous species capable of neutralizing acidic compounds This acid–base reaction is responsible for the formation of ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) constituting up to 60% of PM10 within the Po River basin in Italy Ion chromatographic analyses performed on offline samples indicate that this secondary inorganic species exhibits minimal concentration variability over the Po Valley because of limited air circulation due to orography and mesoscale air circulation investigating gaseous precursors becomes crucial From the northern to the southern part of Lombardy—the region at the center of the basin—NH3 emission amounts account for 2.5 mainly due to agriculture and livestock activities (∼97%) To study NH3 temporal and spatial variability the Environmental Protection Agency of Lombardy Region has been monitoring NH3 concentrations across its territory since 2007 highlighting the impact of various sources Measurements indicate that within the Po basin NH3 concentrations can reach up to 700 µg/m3 (as an hourly average) in proximity to the main gaseous NH3 source Instrument intercomparisons among online monitors and passive vials this paper provides crucial data to understand the formation of secondary inorganic aerosols in one of the most important hotspot sites for air pollution where NH3 and HNO3 are in the gas phase and NH4NO3 is in the aerosol phase Nitric acid is a sticky gaseous compound whose formation during daylight hours is due to the reactivity between NO2 and OH radicals and reaction of the nitrate radical during nighttime showing detection limits between 20 and 50 pptv nitric acid concentrations could vary significantly depending on the wind direction ranging from 400 pptv under conditions of wind from Africa and dust to 1.2 ppbv with air from the boundary layer of NW-Europe Although CIMSs have proven suitable for such measurements they currently pose challenges in terms of management and maintenance and are unsuitable for a branched and continuous network In addition to the availability of its gaseous precursors, i.e., NH3 and HNO3 (21), the formation of NH4NO3 is influenced by the thermodynamic conditions of the air, particularly high temperatures and low humidity (43) but its specific contribution to the toxicity of the resulting compounds requires further investigation we analyze a multi-year dataset of 1-h time resolution measurements of ambient air NH3 concentrations in various sites investigating the spatial–temporal variability of NH3 and formation/transport processes in the middle of the Po Valley The study presents annual and seasonal cycles with a specific focus on different stations This approach highlights the impact of various sources such as air transport from the Po plain and traffic in Milan the influence of livestock and agricultural activities in the southern part of the region and the dominance of mixing layer height in the pre-alpine site The paper also provides additional data on NH4NO3 and NH3 concentrations although an unambiguous relation between the two is not observed The process of NH4NO3 formation in the Po Valley remains uncertain this paper offers a crucial overview of NH3 concentrations laying the groundwork for further studies aiming to understand its role in PM bursts in this region To gain valuable insights into the connection between NH3 and secondary inorganic aerosol compounds, PM10 has been sampled and analyzed using ionic chromatographic techniques, as discussed in Section 2.4 Information on the L-EPA air quality network with regard to atmospheric NH3 monitoring Location of stations belonging to the NH3 monitoring network Lombardy regional area: © 2024 Cagle Online Enterprises “Rem” is used to emphasize its more remote location compared to SKI CdC[farmRB] indicates the proximity of this site to a swine livestock facility To detect ambient air concentrations of NH3, the L-EPA network is mainly equipped with chemiluminescence-based monitors (57, 58). Because chemiluminescence is identified as the reference method for NOx [UNI (59)] this technique is widely used in air quality networks However, over the years, L-EPA has improved its instrumentation with additional equipment such as cavity ring-down spectroscopy [CRDS (60, 61)]. Although every monitoring station listed in Table 1 is equipped with a chemiluminescence-based monitor, only MI-PA[UB] and MV[SB] allow a comparison between these two techniques (Section 2.3) Minimizing the error of measurements and correctly determining the uncertainty associated with the measurement means reducing both the stochastic and deterministic components; this is guaranteed by the application of QA/QC procedures, provided by 2008/50/CE and by the Italian ministerial decree (DM) of 30th March 2017 (62) QC activities consist of a series of procedural actions implemented by the L-EPA technicians according to the indications of the aforementioned DM and help ensure the quality control of the measured data in compliance with the quality objectives of European legislation QA procedures consist of a series of scheduled activities through blind testing and performance auditing L-EPA applies QC procedures also to NH3 analyzers through scheduled preventive maintenance activities, other than regular calibrations and zero and span checks. NH3 measurements are affected by several positive artifacts, and a major source of interference is the presence of high and variable water vapor in the ambient air (63). As reported in the literature (64, 65) and other factors identified for affecting the measurements are the inlet design Based on own experience and knowledge of literature L-EPA has developed further internal procedures in addition to the scheduled maintenance activities various precautions have been taken during the installation of the instruments to minimize the interferers and maximize the efficiency of the measurement Some of them are (i) all pneumatic connections must be made with chromatography-grade (passivated) stainless steel tubing Teflon®; (ii) it is preferred to avoid filters on the sample line or the calibration must be carried out in equipped laboratories; the CRDS also are checked in the laboratory with sample gas readings several intercomparison campaigns have been conducted over the years to confirm the reliability of the measurements In Supplementary Figure S1 a comparison is shown between the data collected from a CRDS monitor (Proceas AP2E) and a chemiluminescence monitor (TEI-17i) near an agricultural field highlights the good agreement between the two instruments The comparison campaign between the two technologies consists of approximately 7,900 h of measurement The results of the linear regression are indicated in the text box of the figure the BC is computed considering the deposit area and sampling air flow and using a mass-specific absorption coefficient of 6.6 m2/g during the latter part of winter 2022 (from 22 February to 15 March) a higher time resolution sampling campaign was performed to observe the variability of secondary inorganic compounds and the role of gaseous NH3 at various sites in Lombardy PM10 samples were collected (Pall TissuQuartz® Ø = 47 mm 6 h) at six sites of the L-EPA air quality network and equipped with NH3 monitors In this section, data concerning NH3 concentrations are presented. An overview of the data collected at all the stations is provided in Table 2 Statistics concerning ammonia measurements based on hourly average native data since 2007 We speculate that the decrease in maximum values over the years is due to an improvement in technologies used in zootechnical and agricultural activities or a decrease in the surrounding agricultural activities This decrease is coherent with INEMAR's databases which report a decline in NH3 emissions in this area from 101,779 t/y in 2014 to 90,727 t/y in 2019 Summary of ammonia concentrations measured within the L-EPA air quality network The geometric mean of the annual averaged trend is illustrated by the black line The blue buffer and the dashed black line are utilized to depict the variability in annual ammonia concentrations among the measuring stations in the network The red bars indicate the number of active stations in the same year The variability of the four case studies is described in further detail as they exhibit characteristics representative of typical monitoring site classes MI-PA[UB] is a background station placed in an urban background area of Milan The nearest agricultural and livestock activities are approximately 5 km from the station MI-PA[UB] can be considered a background site also concerning the main NH3 sources the CdC[farmRB] site is a few tens of meters away from a swine farm and within an area primarily intended for agriculture this station could be considered an “industrial site” in relation to NH3 sources especially when considering the presence of husbandry activity as an anthropic (industrial) influence the SKI[RB] station is placed in an agricultural area but with few animal husbandries in the surroundings it can be defined as an agricultural background site in the same manner that MI-PA[UB] is an urban background site Mo[Rem] is located in an isolated small pre-alpine valley at 1,200 m a.s.l Some nearby areas are sporadically and occasionally used as grazing land for small herds of bovines Mo[Rem] is rarely affected by NH3 emission and the station may be regarded as a rural background and remotely located Ammonia concentrations measured at the four stations described above are presented in detail below The darker lines represent the geometric mean while the shaded buffers depict the range between the 10th and 90th percentile of the hourly concentrations the time series shows higher values in three periods albeit slightly different compared to the previously described site: winter/early springtime The growth in July of the annual cycle is dominated by high peaks: this is due to very high hourly average concentrations (up to 740 µg/m3) observed every second year since 2018 L-EPA technicians verified that fertilization operations of nearby agricultural fields were in progress during those events the geometric annual mean for the NH3 level amounts to 13 µg/m3 the annual cycle at CdC[farmRB] station shows two main periods of rising concentrations: from February to the beginning of April and from July to November the latter one is preceded by 2 months of a modest increase in concentrations the annual cycle shows a distinctly different behavior NH3 concentrations are higher during summertime and very low (sometimes even below the detection limit) during winter and the overall shape is an upside-down “U.” However data collected at the Mo[Rem] station from 2007 to 2020 suggest even here the influence of NH3 in three distinct periods Rises in NH3 concentration pattern are observed from February to April the annual mean concentration is about 1 µg/m3 Averaged concentrations during three representative periods, i.e., from mid-February to mid-April, from mid-May to mid-June, and from mid-September to mid-November, are calculated and shown for each site. Further statistics on an hourly basis are summarized in Table 2 clearly shows that values above the detection limit are mainly detected when the warmer season starts and again decrease after it Arithmetic weekly average of gaseous ammonia in the four case study sites from 2007 to 2022 The maximum hourly values recorded during the week are shown with the blue line (right axes) Arithmetic annual average (±standard deviation) of gaseous ammonia in the four case study sites from 2007 to 2022 CdC[farmRB] values are shown with the yellow dots (right axes) MI-PA[UB] is influenced by transport events that are unlikely to result in a similar increase in values as observed in locations near direct emissions Mo[Rem] shows a completely different graph than other sites showing a bell-trend: the highest concentrations are measured during warmer periods reaching the maximum value in June Arithmetic monthly average of gaseous ammonia in the four case study sites (CdC[farmRB] (A); MI-PA[UB] (B); Mo[Rem] (C); SKI[RB] (D)) from 2007 to 2022 The maximum monthly values recorded are shown with the red lines (right axes) specific periods of the year are typically marked by higher NH3 concentrations As suggested by emission inventory databases these variations could indicate that some specific agricultural and zootechnical activities contribute significantly to NH3 emissions an examination of the impact of the agricultural sector on NH3 concentrations has been conducted four monitoring campaigns at different animal husbandry activities along the Lombardy region have been carried out to compare different fertilization techniques on agricultural fields The considered techniques were (1) surficial spreading (3) nebulization by means of a pivot 20 cm above the ground level of N-abate and micro-filtrated slurry and (4) fertigation of N-abate and micro-filtrated slurry the first two are the most used techniques in the Po Valley we briefly describe the results of the first technique The monitoring campaign was conducted in an agricultural area between Milan and Bergamo cities in September 2018 The comparison among the different techniques will be discussed in a work that is in progress Ammonia concentrations rapidly decreased during the following days thanks to the regulations that order such fertilizers to be buried within 48 h after spreading This led the concentrations to decrease below 100 µg/m3 on 29 September (A) Agricultural site designated for the evaluation of the impact of the surficial spreading fertilization technique on atmospheric ammonia concentration The white area is the area that was fertilized on 26 September and position of the monitoring station (B) Conditional bivariate probability function for ammonia data above 50th percentile (C) Polar plot of the measured ammonia concentrations during the campaign It is worth noticing that MI-PA[UB] and SKI[RB] show the same annual cycle and the same absolute value of this compound ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate concentrations (B-C) and their contribution in PM10 (D-E) Samples were collected in MI-PA[UB] and SKI[RB] from 2018 and 2022 On the contrary, NH4NO3 is found to contribute up to 40% of PM10 mass on a monthly basis in colder periods, which can reach up to 60% of PM10 on a daily average basis (Figures 8D,E) Although the determination coefficient is very low (R2 = 0.2) the data point out a common pattern in specific events This pattern is observed across all individual measurement sites indicating a potential direct relation between these two parameters Variability during the intensive campaign for ammonia (A) and ammonium nitrate (B) Comparison between maximum concentrations of ammonia and ammonium nitrate at the CdC site we delve into the results of NH3 monitoring at the four selected sites examining their cycle based on their sources we compare the NH3 cycle with NH4NO3 concentrations and critically analyses them based on the results of chemical analyses of PM10 samples The selected locations enable us to investigate how concentrations of this gaseous compound may vary depending on the proximity of the primary source identified by the emission inventory. Figure 11’s polar plots illustrate the relationship between NH3 levels Polar plots for the four case study sites: (A) MI-PA[UB] SKI[RB] and CdC[farmRB] sites are surrounded by agricultural fields Source apportionment analysis at SKI[RB] suggests that traffic and/or industrial activities collectively contribute about 10% to the air quality impact Monitoring at CdC[farmRB] in 2014 revealed low concentrations of SO2 and NOx proxies for industrial and combustion sources The regional emission inventory (INEMAR) emphasizes that these two sources contribute less than 5% of total NH3 emissions in the Schivenoglia and Corte de’ Cortesi administrative areas NH3 emissions are primarily attributed to the agricultural sector SKI[RB] and CdC[farmRB] sites reinforce the idea that NH3 concentration levels are strongly influenced by the proximity of the emissive source At CdC[farmRB], the polar plot indicates that the highest values are measured under no-wind or low-wind conditions, supporting a local source, such as animal husbandries. As wind speed increases, concentrations rapidly decline, though remaining high due to a persistent high background condition. Supplementary Figure S3 further supports this evidence Limiting the observation only to the data over the 90th percentile but also the concentrations in these cases are indicative of a transport process with wind speeds below 4 m/s The little variability in the direction of origin of such concentrations suggests that the monitoring station detects activities carried out at west–northwest directions Figures 3, 4 demonstrate that hourly NH3 concentrations for SKI[RB] and CdC[farmRB] can reach 700 g/m3. This aligns with the findings of the campaign described in Section 3.2: soil fertilization by means of animal manure or slurry strongly affects the detected levels of NH3. Table 2 reports the arithmetical averages calculated on an hourly time resolution data in four periods Based on the information about agricultural practices the observations found an explanation referring to the detected values These are the periods in which soil fertilization occurs although each agricultural area has its own particularity meteorological parameters (such as temperature) affect resulting NH3 concentrations due to volatilization variability Both these facts explain the lowest values detected for SKI[RB] and CdC[farmRB] during December and January (and for the entire L-EPA network): in these 2 months spreading procedures are prohibited or heavily limited within the entire Po basin and NH3 volatilization is prevented by the lower temperature that enhances gas-to-particles partitioning in the aerosol phase MI-PA[UB] (Figure 11A) demonstrates that the main source of atmospheric NH3 comes from the plain located ESE of the site whereas the lowest values are detected in cases of wind reinforcement that cleans the atmosphere The graph also indicates a slight increase in concentrations under light or gentle breezes (2–4 m/s) from the west suggesting that these increases may originate from livestock activities on the opposite side of the city of Milan or from vehicular traffic It is necessary to remember that the restrictions introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic have certainly had a positive effect in reducing the impact of vehicular traffic taking into consideration the months of December and January when there is a good correlation between atmospheric NH3 and traffic and excluding only December 2020 and January 2021 which suffered the restrictions of the second wave of COVID-19 the NH3 concentrations were averaged over the two periods: 2007–2016 and 2017–2022 with 6.4 and 11.8 µg/m3 This result cannot be used as verification of an increase in NH3 concentrations due to the addition of urea but suggests the possibility of further investigations The representative cycle of the six chosen monitoring sites, as detailed in Section 3.3, appears to confirm a qualitative correlation between gaseous NH3 and NH4NO3 in the aerosol phase. However, the low coefficient of determination equally indicates that the relationship between the two compounds is not linear (Section 3.3) The intensive period spans 21 days (from late February to mid-March) and is characterized by meteorological stability and atmospheric pressure of 1,014 hPa are at levels that could favor the partitioning of NH4NO3 into the particulate phase The graphs present cycles as moving averages helping to smooth out the time series curve by computing the average of all data points in a fixed-length window It can be observed that in the first and third episodes the increase in concentrations was followed by a significant decrease in the mixing layer height reaching the lowest value in the campaign between 10 and 11 March The second episode of increased NH4NO3 occurs instead in conjunction with an increase in the mixing layer height which remained quite high even in the earlier time slots The relative humidity also increases together with NH4NO3 These factors suggest the possible occurrence of an NH4NO3 formation event Moving average trend for mixing layer height (hmix) in blue PM10 and ammonium nitrate 6-h concentrations in black and green specific humidity (SH) (q) multiplied for 10 to be amplified in light blue and gas precursors (NO2 in brown and NH3 in pink) Their modeling approaches converge to similar results a variation in one of the two gaseous precursors does not lead to a linear change in PM2.5 concentrations and Average daily concentrations trend for gaseous ammonia (left axis) in black line and aerosol ammonium nitrate (right axis) in blue bar for the year 2019 Nevertheless, it is worth noting that the findings presented in this study are based on offline analyses conducted on PM10 samples. These methodologies can be prone to negative artifacts, which may significantly underestimate the semi-volatile component of particulate matter. Past studies by Minguillón et al. (90) and Poulain et al. (91) have effectively compared offline and online analyses the latter utilizing data from the Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM it is essential to highlight that offline and online nitrate correlations exhibit slopes greater than 6 during the summer months This suggests that offline results obtained during sampling under high-temperature conditions could consistently underestimate NH4NO3 concentrations thereby reducing the observable relationship between concentrations of gaseous precursors and the resulting particulate phase The datasets presented in this study can be found in online repositories. and celebrating their Palestinian roots while embracing the opportunities and challenges of Brazilian life These women have a foot in two worlds — one marked by the struggles of their ancestors and the other by the vibrant This unique blend of Palestinian heritage and Brazilian influence has created a distinctive identity for these women allowing them to contribute to their communities in profound ways Palestinian women in Brazil are making a lasting impact Brazil became one of the largest destinations for Palestinian refugees particularly those fleeing the aftermath of war and occupation Palestinian women carried their heritage to Brazil not only as survivors but also as bearers of culture One of the most visible aspects of this heritage has been the role Palestinian women have played in the cultural landscape of Brazil they have helped introduce Palestinian culture to Brazilian society The traditional Palestinian dishes such as musakhan hummus and falafel have found a place in Brazilian kitchens and Palestinian women have become key figures in preserving and sharing these culinary traditions Palestinian-Brazilian women have been active in preserving their heritage through education and arts While cultural preservation is an important aspect of the Palestinian diaspora in Brazil Palestinian women in the country are also making significant strides in the fields of social activism and political engagement As the world continues to grapple with issues such as gender inequality Palestinian-Brazilian women have been active in raising their voices and creating change many Palestinian women have become involved in the feminist movement in Brazil highlighting the unique challenges faced by women from immigrant communities In the context of Brazil’s political landscape these women have worked to amplify the voices of marginalised communities ensuring that the struggles of Palestinian women and other immigrant populations are not overlooked That spirit echoes through the lives of women like Fatima Hussein a dentist and the first Muslim woman to run for city council in Florianopolis Her campaign wasn’t only about breaking barriers in local politics — it was also a statement of presence “I am here to give voice to the voiceless,” she declared representing not only Muslim and Arab-Brazilian communities but the broader struggle of marginalised women across Brazil a Brazilian journalist and activist of Palestinian descent has dedicated her career to telling the Palestinian story through a feminist and anti-colonial lens Her writings bridge Latin America and the Middle East drawing attention to the common threads between Palestinian resistance and the struggles of Indigenous and Afro-Brazilian communities Gaza’s pain becomes real in São Paulo — and so does its hope a Brazilian researcher of Palestinian origin has worked to dismantle stereotypes about Arab women revealing the historical depth of their involvement in literature and political resistance Her research on Palestinian women’s roles from the 19th century to the post-Nakba period shows that their fight has never been new — only rarely told Among the notable Palestinian-Brazilian women shaping their communities is Shahla Othman whose personal story exemplifies resilience and cultural pride Born in Brazil as the daughter of a Palestinian refugee Shahla grew up deeply connected to both her Palestinian roots and her Brazilian heritage This dual identity has fueled her commitment to building bridges of understanding advocating passionately for refugee rights and celebrating Palestinian culture within Brazilian society Through her activism and public engagements Shahla consistently emphasises how her Palestinian background has profoundly influenced her values of perseverance and solidarity while her Brazilian upbringing enriches her approach to multicultural dialogue and social justice Shahla Othman stands as a vibrant symbol of how Palestinian-Brazilian women uniquely contribute to shaping inclusive and dynamic communities embodies a vibrant fusion of her rich cultural roots with the dynamic spirit of her adopted homeland Oula discovered her passion for music through her father and began performing publicly at just four years old she continued pursuing her artistic dreams highlighting traditional Middle Eastern instruments like the bazuq qanun and riq to celebrate and preserve Palestinian cultural heritage Oula’s artistic journey resonates profoundly with the unwavering resilience and steadfast resistance exhibited by Palestinian women in Gaza Just as Oula channels displacement into powerful expressions of cultural preservation through music women in Gaza stand as symbols of strength sustaining their families and communities amidst immense hardship a renowned cardiologist based in Santo Angelo is the daughter of a Palestinian refugee displaced during the 1948 Nakba she has not only built a distinguished medical career but has also emerged as a prominent civic and cultural leader As president of the Cruz de Lorena Women’s Rotary Club and an active member of the Palestinian Arab Federation of Brazil (FEPAL) Badwan exemplifies the dual commitment many Palestinian-Brazilian women carry: serving their local communities while remaining deeply connected to the struggle for justice in Palestine Her efforts were formally recognised when she was named an Honorary Citizen of Santo Angelo by Mayor Jacques Goncalves Barbosa Badwan’s story is part of a broader tapestry of Palestinian women across Brazil who are shaping society with purpose and resilience these women are weaving their Palestinian heritage into the Brazilian social fabric — building bridges between continents and generations Their stories mirror those of women in Palestine who these women reflect the same resilience seen in their diaspora sisters The Palestinian flag at Brazil’s Carnival: Where samba meets solidarity The views key to his drug-smuggling operation that spanned the 1970s through the early ’80s “I ran Bayshore Boulevard every day,” he said “just in case I needed to run from the law.” when law enforcement was waiting for him on a Florida farm where a planeload of his drugs had landed earlier that day “I was heading to the plane when I saw them and then took off before they saw me,” Bedami “I ran in the woods along I-275 from six to two in the morning It might one day be in a biopic about the former mafioso whose associates included Tampa’s Santo Trafficante Jr. Colombia’s Medellin Cartel and former Panamanian military dictator and drug trafficker Manuel Noriega Bedami said he sold the rights to his life story and book “Tampa’s Mafia Underground Airline,” to movie producer Karlee Perez She did not respond to a Tampa Bay Times email or voicemail According to her IMDB.com page Perez is a former Tampa resident who performed for World Wrestling Entertainment before venturing into film “She has invested into acquiring the rights of some incredible IPs and life stories,” the IMDB bio says Acquiring rights to a story is just the first of many steps that go into making a movie and there is no guarantee the project will be funded His father, Joe Bedami Sr., is alleged to have been Trafficante Jr.’s hit man. He disappeared in 1967 and law enforcement considered him dead. But Bedami recently claimed that his dad fled to Sicily His brother, Joe Bedami Jr., was arrested for counterfeiting. But Dick Cloud, a former Tampa police detective who was set to be a key witness in the trial, was murdered at home in 1975. Bedami recently claimed that was done to protect his brother, who was acquitted. And by the time Bedami’s drug-smuggling operation was broken up, he said, they brought in 37 loads of marijuana and cocaine — from 1,500 to 15,000 pounds each. There was the time, as Bedami tells it, he flew to Colombia to pick up 5,000 pounds of marijuana on credit. The suppliers sent his pilot back to Florida and decided to keep Bedami as collateral until they were paid. It took three months. On a few occasions, his crew stole a plane, parachuted the drugs into the Gulf of Mexico and then purposely crashed the aircraft into the water to destroy the evidence. And then there was the time he ran from that Kissimmee farm. Subscribe to our free Do & Dine newsletter You’re all signed up!Want more of our free, weekly newsletters in your inbox? But I got away.” But law enforcement eventually had enough evidence on Bedami. In 1983, he was convicted of federal drug charges and served 36 months. “The government took a lot of my money,” he said. “Millions.” But they didn’t get it all, Bedami claimed, and now he hopes to earn more from the movie. “Absolutely,” Bedami said with a laugh. “Absolutely.” Paul Guzzo is a former culture reporter. by the damp tarp of Pacific Northwestern winter to more intensely feel the change of season the constituents of Oly-ville come crawling out of their burrows and molehills to rejoice in the village square celebrating the coming of their beloved and elusive Sun God This pagan festival of music and co-op tabbouleh yet a nefarious beast and opportunist predator still lurks in the hallows of Oly-ville There is something to be said for the way that Angelo Spencer and his Olympian friends capture this endless summer feeling It has been suggested that this record is not unlike a film with a Morricone soundtrack but I’d argue more so a raga-rock Swan Lake “Now!” this record’s exhibition could not be more exquisitely summer pastoral twangy guitars rolling down the freshly thawed Alps Dick Dale catches a wave of wildflowers behind them But it would be unfair to pigeonhole this record as “surfy.” There is some stellar musicianship and the twang is more Mark Mulcahy or Son Volt than Ventures It all sounds very much like what I had imagined “raga-rock” was: these compositions/jams stretch out and contract all the while dancing around stringy drones and tribal whomp “Estonia” is a real foot-stomper and foreshadows the dangers ahead with decidedly more exotic tonalities and the most Spaghetti Western-esque motifs appear Our protagonist Oly-critters take shelter from the nefarious clouds in a dark wood finding themselves staring face to face with The Big Bad Wolf played by Arrington de Dionyso and his trusty bass clarinet Karl Blau and Clyde Petersen use deceitful dancing and guitar string to tie the wolf to an old pine stump the wolf is impressed with their Oly-ville ingenuity and promises they can all be friends and together they rip into the album closer “Bo Diddley,” a gleeful muppetly romp through a glade as the summer storm gives way to the sun once again but this record is a great deal of fun and certainly does not outlive its welcome from start to finish It is a swell development for the once one-man band though I do miss the presence of his exuberant vocals here these rollicking instrumentals may seem humble and incidental at first but strung together they are not devoid of adventure — that is to say an early summer’s afternoon-sized adventure I drank some and fell asleep listening to this record and had the strangest dream that I was and the information within may be out of date GUELPH — The future appeared uncertain for barbers in 1967 when Franco Figliuzzi set up shop on Wellington Street in Guelph The hippy movement saw men growing their hair long and making fewer visits to the clip shop but as styles came and went Franco’s Barbershop was never short of clients “If I had any more customers I would have to expand my shop,” he said Figliuzzi was 25 years old in 1967 but already had 12 years experience cutting hair He trained and worked for two years in his native Italy in the Calabrian city of Serra San Bruno before he immigrated to Canada and worked 10 years in Bracebridge “I always wanted to have my own place,” he said “When this place became available I was thrilled about it.” Franco’s Barbershop has become an enduring feature of the community serving generations of Guelphites who return regularly for a stylish trim and colorful conversation Most clients are regulars and now their children are carrying on with the family tradition It’s expected that many will make a point of visiting the shop on Friday to celebrate the 45th anniversary but for Figliuzzi the big milestone will be further down the road “I’m looking forward to five years from now on the 50th The genuine family atmosphere of the shop is a big part of its timeless charm and popularity Figliuzzi’s cousin Joe Manno has been with him since the doors opened as well as close friend Angelo Di Santo His son Claudio joined the crew 15 years ago and son Paul five years later It is in every way the model of a successful family business but it never would have happened if his father would have had his way “He didn’t want me to go to the barbershop,” said Figliuzzi My Dad immigrated to Canada in the early 50s and that’s when I went He didn’t know until we came here in 57 that I was a barber.” When Figliuzzi opened shop near the corner of Gordon and Wellington Streets he was surrounded by automobile dealerships “Across the street used to be Barry Cullen’s,” he said “Where the animal hospital is was Robinson’s Pontiac and where McDonalds is now we have all the fast food places so you don’t go hungry.” He said Guelph has changed a lot since 1967 but his customers are pretty much the same “They’re just older and bigger,” he said with his wide characteristic grin Having a good sense of humor is a pre-requisite for the job and the guys are always kidding with each other and their clients The dominant topic of conversation is sports Manno said he has enjoyed every minute of his time at Franco’s but he can’t believe how the time has passed Joe you are going to be here in another 30 years I would have said Paul Figliuzzi said the lasting success of the shop is a testament to the friendship of the original three “It’s absolutely phenomenal that these three guys Angelo and my Dad are still here after 45 years,” he said They spent more time here than at home with their wives.” They have cut back on their hours in recent years but there is no talk of retirement “There was a barber from Guelph who worked until he was 92,” said Di Santo Claudio said both he and Paul went to college to learn their trade but the real education has come from working with the guys “It comes down to respecting each other and we do,” he said He said they also know how to get under each other’s skin and that usually comes in the form of good-natured ribbing about their respective favorite sports teams They don’t let him forget the last time Toronto won the Stanley Cup was a few months after the shop opened “I just have to point out the boys here had dark hair when the Leafs won,” said Paul “Now it’s white and falling out so that just tells you how long it has been If their hair turns black I’ll know the Leafs won the cup.” editor@guelphmercury.com Your browser is out of date and potentially vulnerable to security risks. We recommend switching to one of the following browsers: Invalid password or account does not use the latest innovations in foundry technology while boosting our efficiency and overall capacity and profitability DISA MATCH 32/32 is the perfect example." Mr no scientist ever really proved it was impossible but it is often cited to invoke the concept that we shouldn’t allow ourselves to be limited in what we can achieve.Along the same lines it has been said that you can’t make really heavy castings on a DISA MATCH But the FUNDIMISA foundry was not going to allow itself to be held back by unfounded limitations…Impressive number from an impressive foundryLocated in Santo Angelo in Brazil FUNDIMISA is a jobbing foundry known for its high-quality truck and tractor castings With an annual plant capacity of 78,000 tonnes and tractor counter weights of 200 kg + are turned out at an amazing 70 m/h and with a scrap ratio of only 0.5-1.3% and a casting mismatch of max 0.5 mm.“Aiming for new heights in efficiency and quality we purchased a DISA MATCH 32/32 moulding line in 2011 after having seen it in action at the GIFA show in Germany After an installation time of just two months and a smooth conversion from our jolt squeeze patterns our DISA MATCH has enabled us to reach a production rate of 5,000 heavy brake drums per month at a drum casting precision of 0.5 mm and with a fast precise and repeatable core setting due to the DISA automatic core setter” And easy to maintain"DISA MATCH 32/32 is an accurate machine for making accurate castings – even the very heavy and complex ones." Mr FUNDIMISACHALLENGEConverting to a more efficient match plate technology “As a significant part of our annual 78,000 tonnes output consists of heavy castings weighing up to as much as 205 kg We had concerns about the possible re-use of our existing jolt squeeze patterns and how flexible a conversion to the DISA MATCH would actually be as we could simply remount the majority of our patterns on the larger DISA MATCH plates at very little cost and through simple and smooth processes The additional concern associated with our production of very heavy complex castings was also easily overcome: The DISA MATCH 32/32 has passed with flying colours producing truck brake drums with a casting weight of 60 kg and tractor counter weights with an amazing weight of 205 kg at a very high quality” Paulo Ely comments.“The DISA MATCH has transformed our business increased our efficiency and optimized our competitive power” the DISA MATCH 32/32 was supplemented with a second line: The vertical 131-Z-350 machine.SOLUTIONOff to a flying start Apart from other equipment used at the plant FUNDIMISA operates a DISA MATCH 32/32 with 90 minutes cooling time and a mould size of 813 x 813 mm.“The short installation time and easy pattern plate conversion got us off to a flying start The easy operation and the both dense and uniform moulds that the MATCH machine allows us to make at a much higher speed than before stability and reliability to our overall moulding processes And the easy access to maintenance – due to the simplified design without the need for pins and bushings between the cope and drag Paulo Ely states.RESULTTransforming business “Although we have had some challenges with rubber belts and the in-chamber spray we firmly believe that the successful implementation and operation of the MATCH line has allowed us to steadily increase our position as a trusted partner and supplier of competitively priced Paulo Ely sums up how the DISA MATCH 32/32 moulding machine and technology has helped transform FUNDIMISA.So if you ever hear it said that a bumble bee can’t fly or that castings as heavy as 205kg cannot be produced on a DISA MATCH just roll your eyes and watch Click here to get back to where you came from “My Name is Vendetta” is an Italian crime thriller film released on Netflix that is just a reiteration of an age-old story told so many times already sets out to take revenge on his enemies from the past when his wife and brother-in-law are mercilessly killed one fine day Santo brings along his teenage daughter Sofia adding one more age-old layer to the film: that of a father and daughter set out on a dangerous adventure It is safe to say that “My Name is Vendetta” absolutely fails to deliver much effect on either of these two aspects and is easily skippable unless you’re strictly looking for just action the loving Romeo family is introduced as Santo and his beloved wife Ingrid are seen visiting a school-level ice hockey match in which their daughter Sofia is participating While the mother is mostly unable to understand why Sofia would be as aggressive as she is on the rink the daughter seems to be more like her father as long as the boy does not ever hurt his daughter Sofia is taken out by Santo for an off-road adventure in their car as the girl has wanted to learn to drive on such terrain for a long time Sofia dearly wishes to take a picture of herself with her father to put up on social media but Santo strictly tells her not to take any pictures of him It has always been like this with Santo; he does not like or allow any of his family members to take any pictures of him and so she sneakily takes a photo of her father and puts it up on the internet but this photo seems to start a chain reaction somewhere in Milan as a group of menacing-looking men take a close look at the photograph Santo stays back for a while at his wood-sawing factory to look after the machinery and instead sends his brother-in-law Patrick to pick Sofia up from practice where he also spends some warm time with his sister Ingrid this scene is quickly turned upside down when two armed men break into the house and kill Patrick and Ingrid The attackers also take close pictures of Patrick’s face and then realize that there is a third person in the house as well—young Sofia While they spend some time looking for the girl Sofia manages to stay hidden until the evening Stumbling upon the gruesome scene at his house Santo spends no time mourning or trying to help his dead wife and instead takes his daughter away from the place It seems the man has realized that the ghosts from his past are back for revenge As Santo and Sofia get away from their house to a string of safe houses in an effort to evade their attackers the man initially stays silent about what is going on and just keeps instructing his daughter around and soon she manages to throw a fit of rage enough for Santo to open up to her It is now that Santo reveals that his name is not really Santo Romeo but Domenico Franze and he was once part of the dangerous Sicilian mafia called the “Ndrangheta.” It was actually his family Santo never really had any option but to grow up in a life of violence had stirred up trouble with their rival mafia family Due to reasons not really mentioned in the film Santo had killed the eldest son of mafia don Angelo Lo Bianco and had obviously caused a huge upset in the rival family Angelo Lo Bianco has been looking for Domenico Franze in order to exact revenge for the murder of his son Santo had already seemingly fallen in love with a woman named Ingrid and had wanted to settle down and start a new life with her He did not care much for all the violence and bloodshed and just wanted a way to get away from it all It was due to this that he had fled from Milan and settled down in a remote town on the northern fringes of the country; he had also given up his given name of Domenico Franze and had instead taken on the identity of Santo Romeo Santo was all the more determined to keep his wife and daughter safe from any harm and was resolute to never be found by the mafia again This was precisely why he always kept insisting that nobody took pictures of him for Santo is a man aware of the easy data breaches of the digital world as we are also shown scenes from the Lo Bianco family in Milan as they prepare attacks on Santo Don Angelo had gotten himself a new right-hand man and his expertise seems to be facial recognition technology He had searched the internet with an old image of Domenico Franze and been led to the recent Instagram post by Sofia Sure that this was none other than the man they had been looking for the Lo Biancos sent their men to murder him and his family the goons mistakenly killed the brother-in-law but Don Angelo could easily understand that they had missed their actual target the mafia keeps sending more men to track down and kill Santo and Sofia As news of the double murder breaks out on television the police identify the missing Santo as the notorious mafia henchman Domenico Franze Santo decides to go to Milan to seek revenge himself he decides to take the girl along with him as well and gradually give her training too It just seems like Santo had been living a different life for all these years but the brutal murder of his loved ones had sent him back to his old vicious self In the knife-yielding training that he gives to Sofia he ensures that the girl learns to use the knife not in a way to kill her victim too quickly but instead in a way that would make her victim remember her face before dying Santo makes a marvelous plan for seeking revenge—while his whole situation was due to the fact that he had murdered the elder Lo Bianco son he now plans to kidnap the younger son and hold him hostage and the man is more invested in his duties as a businessman than those of a member of the mafia family He is seen to have disagreements with his father as well but is not strong enough to overrule the don’s decisions Don Angelo employs Rudi Crisara to now track down Santo and Sofia from the public traffic and security cameras in the city of Milan the ex-mafia henchman makes his way to the city and He then leaves a message for Don Angelo—the mafia boss is to confess to the police about all his crimes over the last thirty years and also to provide proper evidence about all his accomplices and network of funds or else Santo will kill his younger son as well Santo believes that Don Angelo might negotiate with him in order to save his son but the mafia boss is more determined to save his reputation and business than to protect his often-disagreeable son He sends more men to Santo and Sofia’s location and Santo has to fight them off alone to protect themselves from murder Sofia and Michele have been alone in the safehouse where Santo had kept Lo Bianco hostage and Michele now tries to convince the girl that both of them are in a similar situation Just like Sofia had been forced into this life of hiding and evading all of a sudden he too has been forced to be a part of his family’s blood-thirsty violence He also tells the girl that her father had killed his elder brother and Sofia seems to question her father’s actions who explains that he has gone on a mission with no return Realizing that Don Angelo Lo Bianco would not stop at anything which also seems to be the mafia headquarters and wipes out all the security all by himself He then enters Angelo’s room and strangles him to death But Santo was very aware that such an action would very quickly draw the police onto him Knowing that his and his daughter’s lives were too damaged anyway Santo makes it seem like he is about to pull out a gun The authorities then also find out about the safehouse and rescue Michele and Sofia from there with the latter being put up at a Catholic orphanage Michele Lo Bianco visits the orphanage and meets with Sofia He promises her that he wants to stop the unnecessary blood feud between the families of Lo Bianco and Franze and asks her to meet him once she leaves the orphanage and Sofia leaves the orphanage as soon as she turns eighteen Still holding memories of her father very dear to her heart she goes over to Michele’s office to meet him It becomes clear that Michele actually wanted to kill her for he now wanted revenge for the death of his father and had sent Crisara to look for her at the orphanage But Sofia herself is driven by the same intention as the member of the family that her father had fought for and given his life for as well She now stabs Michele to his death and ensures that he remembers who killed him as he suffocates in his own blood for thirty seconds Sofia walks out into the city and blends in with the crowd She will perhaps never again put up any pictures of herself on Instagram after all this “My Name is Vendetta” is a 2022 Drama Action film directed by Cosimo Gomez Get to know more about
