Toyota Motor Corp (7203) said earlier this week it would close its facility in the Brazilian city of Sao Bernardo do Campo and move vehicle production to its other manufacturing sites in the state of Sao Paulo. According to Toyota, the move is part of its plan “to become more competitive when facing the challenges of the Brazilian market and the sustainability of its business in the country.” The closure will be implemented gradually, starting in December 2022 and expected to be completed in November 2023, the Japanese auto maker said. Established in 1962 and being Toyota’s first plant ever outside Japan, the facility in Sao Bernardo do Campo employs nearly 550 people. Toyota said that they would be offered a transfer to other facilities in the area. The shares of Toyota Motor Corp closed lower for a second consecutive trading session in Tokyo on Thursday. In addition he has been dedicate to emphasize the role of architecture in the process of improving urban quality by both preserving heritage as a school designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha in the sixties or creating possibilities for new projects such as the Work and Workers Museum by Marcelo Ferraz and Francisco Fanucci. © Nelson KonThe building occupies 17.500 m², a whole very long and narrow block. Brazilian aerostructures factory took place in May 2018 with the inauguration of the facilities in São Bernardo do Campo. The factory spans across an area of 5,000 m² and utilizes digital technology to optimize manufacturing processes and to eliminate paper documentation The facility is part of Saab's global supply chain for Gripen E with the production of tail cones and aerodynamic brakes starting in June 2020 The factory reached a new milestone in November 2021 with the start of wing assembly for the Gripen E Saab completed production of the first front fuselage for the fighter in November 2022 Establishing Gripen fighter production in Brazil is part of Saab's commitment to supporting the program's continuity and supporting the development of the local defense industry Saab serves the global market of governments authorities and corporations with products services and solutions ranging from military defence to civil security Union officials of the Brazilian Metalworkers Union of ABC (SMABC) returned last week from a trip to Germany which was especially aimed at preparing a new trap for the workers at the Mercedes-Benz (Daimler) truck plant in São Bernardo do Campo they expect the implementation of massive layoffs announced by the company in early September which includes 3,600 job cuts and the outsourcing of several sectors of the factory After two months of making every effort to prevent workers from mounting a struggle against these attacks the unions bureaucrats announced a trip to Germany in late October Their aim was not to meet and organize a joint struggle with the Mercedes-Benz workers in Germany who are also facing job cuts and who staged a one-day strike last week against the closure of a plant in the south of Berlin they went for closed-door meetings with the big bosses at the company’s headquarters As SMABC’s Executive Director Aroaldo da Silva admitted at an assembly at the factory gate after the trip “We only have [to offer] what the company told us that they don’t want any contract worker to remain in the plant … We don’t really have anything (to offer) right now.” the bureaucrats asked the workers to submit to the “best voluntary resignation plan [PDV in the Portuguese acronym] in the plant’s history” that would supposedly “lessen the impact of outsourcing.” SMABCP President Moises Selérges declared that the union’s only course of action will be to demand a PDV organized with the union’s approval “Mercedes used to carry out their PDVs without negotiation a PDV like this will have to be the result of negotiation and approval in an assembly.” Da Silva defended the massive cuts while identifying the interests of the workers with those of the business owners because if the plant closes [the victims] will be the areas that the company wants to close the workers and the bosses inside the plant as well.” Mercedes-Benz announced “robust profits” in the third quarter of this year increasing its gross revenue by 83 percent over the same quarter last year an increase from €2.8 billion to €5.2 billion Large margins of these figures go directly into the pockets of shareholders and “the bosses inside the plant.” Instead of “lessening the impact” of outsourcing the voluntary resignation plan would immediately put permanent workers under the threat of being fired if they do not leave the company in the near future It would also mean a general worsening of conditions for workers who remain replacing as many permanent contracts as possible with outsourced and temporary underpaid contracts General Motors laid off thousands of employees at its plant in São Caetano do Sul The São Caetano Metalworkers Union declared at the time that the cuts were necessary to prevent the company from leaving the region and to guarantee new investments after remaining on the production line without interruption during the worst outbreaks of the pandemic GM workers faced a new contract with more cuts in wages and benefits and ending stability for victims of work-related accidents despite a 13-day strike and enormous opposition from the workers because the union acted at every step to isolate the movement as the Labor Court prepared to declare it illegal That is the same course being taken today by the SMABC in the Mercedes-Benz São Bernardo plant Two months after having hypocritically declared that they would “not accept workers being laid off,” the union officials have clearly been exposed as working hand in hand with the company to allow these attacks the union remained silent throughout September as the termination date for contract workers approached Mercedes began the dismissal of hundreds of contract workers a week before their contracts expired Mercedes-Benz announced a new deal to outsource logistics as the bureaucrats brought the terminated contract workers to the SMABC headquarters to tell them that nothing could be done about their layoffs the logistics workers at the Mercedes-Benz plant began a strike against their outsourcing Union officer Aroaldo da Silva was responsible for defusing this spontaneous work stoppage which threatened to explode into a wider revolt Da Silva declared in relation to the outsourcing that “We have to do all the probing possible to try to diminish the impact on the sector.” He declared the union would not accept a work stoppage of all logistics workers “so as not to stop production.” the union officials are seeking to conceal their own responsibility while buying time for the company to cut labor costs in order to make the plant attractive for investments Their trip to Germany took place in the midst of an escalating global economic crisis and the drive of the imperialist governments to world war which is provoking skyrocketing energy prices in Europe As Mercedes-Benz pointed out in its quarterly earnings statement the company is worried about“energy supply uncertainties in Europe and the ongoing COVID challenges in Asia” and is preparing itself “to safeguard supply chains and to maximize the potential for reducing or substituting the use of natural gas in vehicle production.” the SMABC appeals to the German capitalists heading Mercedes-Benz promising stability for their profitable operations in Brazil by suppressing workers’ struggles for better living conditions This corporatist procapitalist orientation has been clearly outlined in the “Industry 10+ Plan” by IndustriALL Brazil of which the SMABC is one of the main members The unions have presented that program as a basis for the labor policies of the incoming Workers Party (PT) government of President-elect Luís Inácio Lula da Silva As opposed to the “strategy” posed by the bureaucrats to secure the company’s profit interests the spontaneous work stoppage at the logistic sector of the São Bernardo plant showed that the workers are not willing to accept the massive layoffs and outsourcing A contract worker who had been laid off in early October contacted the World Socialist Web Site anonymously to denounce the company and the union’s bankrupt maneuvers He said:“Daimler’s biggest plant [outside Germany] is here It’s sad because we are treated as less than numbers who give their blood for the company to achieve its goals … The company is only reaping its rewards because of us he stated: “I’m not hopeful because they are going there to talk to the businessmen so whatever will benefit the businessmen they will do They are concerned that Lula wins the election.” The worker spoke to the WSWS just days before the presidential run-off on October 30 which resulted in the PT candidate’s victory The worker pointed to the efforts of union bureaucrats who had absurdly declared that Lula’s coming to power would reverse the cuts and layoffs They act only for some candidate and forget the main thing In opposition to the SMABC policy of cutting living conditions and jobs to compete for investments against plants in other countries workers at the São Bernardo plant must organize an independent rank-and-file committee to lead their own struggle and reach out to workers in the plants in Germany and all over the world The International Workers’ Alliance of Rank-and-File Committees (IWA-RFC) will provide the necessary structure for that internationally unified struggle to develop continuava sem iluminação pública na noite deste domingo (13) - Paulo Pinto/Agência Brasil On Monday morning (14), Enel, the electricity distribution company in São Paulo, released a report on the blackout in the capital's metropolitan region Around 530,000 clients are still without electricity 354,000 of them in the city of São Paulo with 36,900 homes without power; Taboão da Serra with 32,700; and São Bernardo do Campo The outage to the population of São Paulo began on Friday (11), when a 30-minute storm hit the state. At the time, around 2.1 million homes were left without power In a statement released on Saturday (12), Brazil’s Electricity Agency (Aneel in Portuguese) ordered Enel to provide details on what happened and raised the possibility of recommending the end of the company's concession after a meeting with representatives of Enel the federal agency and the São Paulo State Public Services Regulatory Agency (Arsesp Aneel classified the company's performance in restoring the power supply in the metropolitan region as “below expectations.” The agency pointed to Enel's delay in reaching 2,500 employees working in the neighborhoods affected by the power outage to make the necessary repairs The company itself informed the number in its contingency plan 1,700 employees were working in the affected areas Aneel also compared Enel's current lack of a satisfactory response to that seen in November 2023 the resumption is not as efficient as we had hoped,” said Aneel's director-general The meeting between the regulatory agencies and Enel took place amid an exchange of criticism between Ricardo Nunes (Brazilian Democratic Movement) and Alexandre Silveira (Social Democratic Party) the Brazilian Minister of Mines and Energy Nunes went so far as to criticize the federal government saying there was “neglect” regarding São Paulo’s population After receiving heavy criticism for his role in curbing the crisis Nunes posted on his X/Twitter profile on Sunday that Silveira had talked about renewing Enel's contracts in Brazil with the company's director in Italy Silveira accused Nunes of seeking to inherit Pablo Marçal's votes [third in the first round of elections for São Paulo City Hall] with accusations against the federal government The minister said he had taken part in a discussion forum in Italy “with several Brazilian and Italian businessmen and authorities” and that “there was no discussion about renewing Enel's concession.” “This is not on the table São Paulo residents were left without electricity for nearly a week after a storm This incident led Aneel to find Enel in over BRL 165 million (approximately $29 million) The Agency's decision acknowledged that the severe weather events on November 3 it emphasized that these events did not absolve the distributor of its responsibility to restore service quickly and effectively faced heavy criticism for attending the Formula 1 race while parts of the city remained in darkness.  All original content produced and editorially authored by Brasil de Fato may be reproduced provided it is not altered and Now Lula’s campaign is rushing to shore up support in the state ahead of the presidential runoff.    Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva greets supporters during a campaign rally in Sao Bernardo do Campo He chose the satellite city on Sao Paulo’s outskirts for a rally kick-starting his campaign for the runoff. Known as the cradle of Brazil’s labor movement, it’s here that he emerged as a political force in the 1970s, founding the metalworkers’ union, organizing strikes and leading marches. said on Friday that a balance needed to be struck between social spending and putting public finances in order."We think that fiscal responsibility and social responsibility should go hand in hand," he said on a conference call.Investors and even Lula allies have also expressed concern about delays in naming his finance minister Lula has said he will only name his cabinet once he returns from the COP27 climate summit in Egypt.Senator Simone Tebet of the centrist Brazilian Democratic Movement party (MDB) said the finance minister should be his first cabinet pick to make clear what his economic policies are going to be."A finance minister is needed to explain the president's political thought," she told reporters. On Thursday Lula sought to downplay investors' concerns I have never seen a market as sensitive as ours," said the president-elect 1.($1 = 5.3449 reais)Reporting by Lisandra Paraguassu and Marcela Ayres in Brasilia Lula is carried by the people who stood outside the Metal Worker's Union - Paulo Pinto/Fotos Públicas Read the translation of Lula’s historical speech below: As I was saying, we didn’t manage to approve a proposal I considered to be good, and then people started to disrespect the Union board. I would visit factories, and no one would stop [to listen to him]. The press would write: “Lula speaks to workers’ deaf ears.” It took us one year to regain our prestige among our peers. And I thought, somewhat revengefully: ‘These workers think they can stage a strike for 100 days, 400 days, that they can go all the way. So I’ll put them to the test in 1980.’ "This means money won’t solve a strike’s problem. It’s not about 5% or 10%, but rather it’s about what a strike has of political theory, political know-how" I’m not above the law. If I didn’t believe in the court system, I would not have created a political party. I would have suggested a revolution in this country. But I believe in the court system, in fair courts, in courts that rule on a case based on the records, based on the information brought by the prosecution and the defense, on substantial evidence pointing to who is guilty. "And what they don’t realize is that every blow they deliver, I grow closer to the Brazilian people" "I’ve dreamt it was possible to have students from the outskirts at this country’s best universities, so that our judges and attorneys were not only members of the elite" "And I’d like to say that announcing Marisa’s death before it happened was a mean, cruel thing the media and the Public Prosecution did to her." "They don’t want Lula back because they think the poor can’t have rights" So, my fellow comrades, their other common dream is to take the picture of Lula in prison. Oh, I can see Veja [right-wing magazine] being so hot for my picture on their cover. I can see Globo being so hot for my picture in prison. They will have multiple orgasms. What our preacher said earlier, and I’ve been saying that in every speech: there is no point in trying to stop me from walking this land, because I have millions and millions of Boulos [Guilherme Boulos, social movement leader and presidential candidate], millions and millions of Manuelas [Manuela D’Ávila, Brazil’s Communist Party congresswoman and presidential candidate], of Dilmas Rousseffs [Brazil’s ousted president] that walk this land for me. There is no point in trying to end my ideas, they are already lingering in the air and you can’t arrest them. There is no point in trying to stop me from dreaming, because once I cease dreaming, I’ll keep dreaming through your minds and your dreams. There is no point in thinking that everything will stop when I have a heart attack. That’s nonsense, because my heart shall beat through your hearts, and they are millions of hearts. They have to know that the death of a fighter cannot stop the revolution. They have to know. They have to know that we will definitely push for media regulation so the people won’t be victimized by lies every single day. They have to know that you guys, who knows, maybe are even more intelligent than me, and [will keep] burning the tires that you keep on burning, staging demonstrations, occupying lands in urban and rural areas. I have faith that tomorrow, for example, you will receive good news that the land you occupied in São Bernardo do Campo, which seemed so difficult, will finally be yours. "There is no point in trying to stop me from dreaming, because once I cease dreaming, I’ll keep dreaming through your minds and your dreams" I want to know how many days they will spend believing that they have arrested me. As many days as they leave me there, more Lulas will be born in this country and there will be more and more people willing to fight in this country, because in a democracy there is no limit, there’s no wrong time to fight. I’ve told my comrades: if it were up to me, I wouldn't go [turn myself in]. But I’ll go because, otherwise, tomorrow they’ll say that I am fugitive, that I am hiding. No! I’m not hiding! I’ll go to them and I’ll prove my innocence, so that they know I have no fear, that I’m not going to run, and I’m going to prove my innocence. Let them do as they wish. Whatever they want. I’m going to quote what a little ten-year-old girl once said to me in Catanduva [a city in the state of São Paulo], a quote that has no author. She said: the powers that be might kill one, two, or three roses, but they will never be able to stop the Spring from coming. And our struggle is a quest for the Spring. They must know we want more housing, more schools, less mortality. We don’t want to see the same brutality they did to Marielle [Franco, leftist city counselor assassinated last month]. We don’t want to see the same barbaric treatment black youth gets in this country. We don’t want to see more children mortality caused by malnutrition in this country. We don’t want to see a teenager who doesn’t have any hope of going to university, because this country is such a nitwit, that it was the last country in the world to have a university. The last! All of the poorer countries had one, but they didn’t want to see our youth get educated. They said it was too expensive. And it makes me wonder: what was the cost of not doing this fifty years ago? I want you all to know that I’m deeply proud, deeply, deeply proud, of being the only president that didn’t have a college degree, but that I’m also the president that built more universities in the history of this country, to show those people they must not mistake intelligente with the number of years you spend in school. This isn’t intelligence, this is knowledge. And with this belief, comrades, holding my head up high, like I am here speaking to you, I want to get there and tell the chief police officer: I am here at your disposal. And History, in a few days, will prove those who committed a crime were the chief officer who accused me, the judge who tried me, and the Prosecution, who treated me as a light matter. For this reason, comrades, my heart doesn’t have enough room for everyone, but I want you to know that, if there is something I grew to like in this world, that’s my relationship with the people. When I hold your hand, when I hug one of you… And now I kiss men and women alike, everyone’s the same… When I kiss one of you, it’s not with a hidden agenda. I am kissing you because when I was president, I used to say: ‘I am going back to where I came from.’ Comrades, let me tell you something: you shall see that I will get out of this greater, stronger, more real, and innocent, because I want to prove they are the ones who committed a crime, a political crime by persecuting a man who has a 50-year history in politics, and I am very grateful for that. Thank you, comrades, thank you so much for all you have done for me. Thank you very much, my friends!" flooding and landslides affected the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo State from Sunday 10 March São Paulo’s Fire Department said that at least 12 people have died and 6 have been injured Flood water was reported in several neighbourhoods of the city blocking major roads and causing severe disruption to public transport The worst hit areas are south and east of São Paulo city the municipality of São Bernardo do Campo and nearby cities of Ribeirão Pires and Suzano The heavy rain caused the Tamanduateí River which runs through south eastern parts of the city affecting areas around São Caetano do Sul in particular Rescues and evacuations have been carried out and the Fire Department has attended 1,267 interventions related to the rains Governor João Doria visited affected areas on Monday 11 March and asked residents to stay at home where possible The governor warned of further heavy rain over the coming 48 hours Four deaths were reported after a house collapsed in the city of Riberao Pires Another person died in a landslide in Embu das Artes Three people drowned in flood water in São Caetano one in Sao Bernardo do Campo and another in São Paulo the state government said that rainfall rates have been well above historical averages Santo André recorded 182mm in 24 hours to 11 March the equivalent of 80% of the March average São Bernardo do Campo and Ribeirão Pires also saw high levels of rain recording over 70% of the March average rainfall in 24 hours At least 3 people died and over 1,000 were displaced after flooding in Sao Paulo in March last year As many as 24 people died in floods in the metropolitan region of São Paulo in March 2016 Cookies | Privacy | Contacts © Copyright 2025 FloodList Saab's first aerostructures plant outside of Sweden for the new Gripen E/F fighter reaches another important milestone with the start of production which will then be delivered to the final assembly facilities at the Embraer plant in Gavião Peixoto Saab signed a contract with Brazilian government for the development and production of 36 Gripen E/F aircraft the first Brazilian Gripen E aircraft was delivered to start the flight test programme as Gripen production starts at Saab’s site in São Bernardo do Campo The tail cone and front fuselage of the single-seat version of the Gripen fighter are the first aerostructures to enter into production at Saab’s site in São Paulo wing box and front fuselage for the two-seater version will also be manufactured there “This is another outcome of the Transfer of Technology (ToT) of the Gripen programme Based on theoretical and practical on-the-job training of Brazilian engineers and assemblers at our Linköping site we were able to establish a highly qualified production line in our production site in São Bernardo do Campo following the same standards that we have in our factory in Sweden,” says Jonas Hjelm Saab has more than 70 highly qualified employees present at the site in São Bernardo do Campo half of whom are participating or have already participated in the ToT Programme in Sweden Part of these employees have already completed the training and returned to initiate the production in Brazil Saab serves the global market with world-leading products services and solutions within military defence and civil security Saab has operations and employees on all continents around the world adopts and improves new technology to meet customers’ changing needs Judge Carolina Lebbos said in a brief statement that the details of Lula’s travel arrangements would be kept confidential “to preserve the family’s privacy and to guarantee not only the physical integrity of the prisoner, but public safety as well.” The former president is being held in Curitiba, capital of the southern state of Parana. State Gov. Ratinho Junior confirmed that at the request of federal authorities, his administration would provide an aircraft to transport Lula to Sao Paulo for the funeral. The body of Arthur Araujo Lula da Silva, one of six grandchildren of the former president, is to be cremated at mid-day Saturday. The ceremony will take place in Sao Bernardo do Campo, an industrial suburb of Sao Paulo, at the same cemetery where Lula’s late wife, Marisa Leticia Rocco, was laid to rest after her death in February 2017. Lula’s center-left Workers Party said earlier Friday that the former head of state’s attorneys would seek permission for him to attend Arthur’s funeral. The youngster’s death comes a little more than month after that of Lula’s older brother, Genival Inacio da Silva, known as Vava, at the age of 79 after a long battle with a rare form of cancer. Lula, 73, asked to be allowed to attend Vava’s funeral, but was turned down after the Federal Police argued that transporting him to the funeral site in Sao Bernardo do Campo and ensuring his security there would cause logistical problems. Following Vava’s funeral, Lula was offered a furlough to meet with his family at a military base in Sao Paulo state. But the ex-president, who governed from 2003 to 2011, opted to remain at his cell at the Federal Police headquarters in Curitiba and receive a visit from his family there. Lula said he believed the decision to keep him from Vava’s funeral was made by Justice and Public Security Minister Sergio Moro, who as a federal judge convicted him in 2017 of charges of accepting bribes from a construction company in the form of renovations to a seaside condo that the former president never owned or occupied. The conviction was upheld on appeal and the prison sentence was lengthened from nine years and six months to more than 12 years. Lula has been behind bars since last April, which led to his being barred from the 2018 presidential election amid polls showing that he would have won by a wide margin. With Lula excluded from the contest, far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro won the presidency and went on to offer Moro a Cabinet post. The case against Lula, who denies any wrongdoing, was based largely on plea-bargained testimony from people already convicted of corruption offenses. Deportes Entretenimiento Subscribe for unlimited accessSite Map Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is headed to prison The massively popular Brazilian former president has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for corruption A judge ordered Lula to present himself to start that term yesterday at 5pm Curitiba time Lula holed up at a metalworkers union building outside São Paolo But he announced today that he’ll be turning himself in he can still look forward to some special treatment while imprisoned with two windows and a private bathroom with hot water Lula will get similar treatment as general population prisoners when it comes to food—coffee with milk and a hot lunch and dinner—and weekly family visits It’s all quite a change for Lula compared to his recent life Lula lived in Brasilia in an Oscar Niemeyer-designed building whose name means “palace of the dawn,” and worked in another opulent Niemeyer building whose columns are meant to invoke the lightness of feathers But this isn’t the first time the 72-year-old Lula will experience a prison cell; he was jailed in his former life as an union activist when the country was under military rule Four years after electing a far-right populist who filled his administration with military officers, Brazil will return an old leftist to power. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva – popularly known as “Lula” – will succeed Jair Bolsonaro as president having previously served as president from 2003 to 2010 he returns to the Alvorada Palace in Brasilia promising to make his fellow citizens happy again with right-wing majorities in Congress it will be tough for him to keep all his promises regarding education and environmental conservation Tens of thousands of supporters of Lula’s Workers’ Party have been bussed into the capital from across Brazil eager to welcome 2023 and celebrate their victorious candidate who brings the left back to power for the first time since the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff in 2016 The Bolsonaro era has now come to a close, in an undignified fashion. Just before inauguration day, the outgoing president flew to Florida with his wife, Michelle, to stay in the mansion of a retired Brazilian martial arts fighter – and possibly to reunite with his political ally, Donald Trump During his administration, the 67-year-old Bolsonaro – a former army captain and congressman – systematically dismantled social programs and gun control policies. He also accelerated the deforestation of the Amazon and elevated Evangelical Christian doctrine The security operation in Brasilia will be immense on January 1 a deployment of 8,000 members of the security forces and a ban on civilians carrying weapons Police officials have recommended that the future president wear a bulletproof vest and attend his parade in an armored car however – a former steel worker who enjoys brandishing his populist credentials – enjoys the adoration of the masses Outgoing Vice President Hamilton Mourão has given a televised speech in his capacity as acting president in the absence of Bolsonaro. Mourão – a retired general – has accused his former boss of “creating a climate of chaos.” He will be present at the peaceful transfer of power there will be a monumental party with music for all tastes chants in favor of Lula increased in the hotel district of Brasilia “No one steals 60 million hearts,” a supporter yelled from a balcony This was in reference to the 60 million votes that Lula got in the October 30 runoff This narrow victory was very different from the two comfortable margins that Lula managed to win by in 2002 and 2006 The outgoing president has not acknowledged his defeat Several protests are still ongoing across the country – Bolsonaro’s supporters are calling for a coup One member of the right was arrested and accused of terrorism for trying to cause a large explosion intended to create chaos and trigger a military intervention Bolsonaro condemned the attack and strove to distance himself from his most radical support base who recognize how much was done to reduce poverty and increase educational opportunities in the 2000s But the political organization also has many critics the former president himself spent 500 days in jail over corruption charges (which were eventually dismissed) Lula has converted his missing finger – which he lost while working in a factory – into a personal brand After serving as a popular union organizer the most underprivileged Brazilians were able to send their children to university or even travel by airplane for the first time Many marginalized citizens – especially Indigenous and LGBTQ+ Brazilians – have high hopes that Lula will not only jumpstart the economy misogyny and racism which were part of Bolsonaro’s harsh rhetoric Lula will have to balance the concerns of his base with the prevalence of military officers in the state bureaucracy and the dominance of pro-Bolsonaro parties in the legislature A phrase which is often repeated is that “this is not a victory for Lula nor for his party… it is a victory for democracy.” And democracy requires compromise as the incoming president expressed in his campaign The first adversary that Lula has turned into an ally is the new vice president Lula has appointed a handful of old technocrats from the Workers’ Party who mostly hail from his stronghold in the poorer and more diverse northeast of the country there are centrists and center-right politicians here and there The president’s diverse cabinet will have 37 ministers – a huge group by modern political standards – hailing from nine parties more than in any previous administration in Brazilian history Sign up for our weekly newsletter to get more English-language news coverage from EL PAÍS USA Edition ¿Quieres añadir otro usuario a tu suscripción ¿Por qué estás viendo esto? cambia tu suscripción a la modalidad Premium Cada uno accederá con su propia cuenta de email lo que os permitirá personalizar vuestra experiencia en EL PAÍS ¿Tienes una suscripción de empresa? The decision comes just more than a month after Ford announced plans to cut hourly and salaried positions in Europe, and possibly shutter plants there. Cargo heavy trucks and the Ford Fiesta compact car at the Sao Bernardo Assembly Plant The automaker is cutting sales of the Cargo lineup which includes Transit vans; F-4000s; F-350s; and Fiesta cars in South America this year It was unclear Tuesday if the Sao Bernardo plant would get new products in the future "Ford is committed to the South American region by building a sustainable and profitable business with strengthened product offerings and a leaner more agile business model," said Lyle Watters "We know this action will have a major impact on our employees in Sao Bernardo and we will be working closely with all our stakeholders on the next steps." Ford plans to build its SUV and pickup portfolio in South America to boost profitability The automaker is phasing out Focus production in Argentina as well The automaker is taking similar steps in North America as it phases out sedans in favor of more SUVs and pickups The decision to exit the South American heavy commercial-truck business is expected to cost Ford $460 million most of which goes to separation and termination payments for Ford employees The charge is part of the $11 billion total Ford expects to incur as a result of its global restructuring.  Ford announced in January it would cut less-profitable vehicles from its European lineup cut the workforce and possible close plants to right-side the money-losing business there Ford has lost hundreds of millions in Europe and South America in recent years despite strong profits in North America Ford is cutting $25.5 billion in global operating costs and taking an $11 billion charge in doing so.  said in January that restructuring plans for Europe and South America will differ from whatever Ford decides to do in North America "The situation of South American or Europe is quite different," he said we see a really healthy business within them The commercial vehicle business saved Europe group vice president and president for Europe Though Ford's heavy commercial vehicles will flee the South American market the automaker could still have a commercial presence there Ford announced in January an agreement to partner with Volkswagen AG on commercial vans and pickups outside of North America A Ford-VW co-developed pickup could launch in South America though it's not expected before 2022.  The automaker has also cut "salaried and administrative costs region-wide" by 20 percent in South America Despite being “committed” to the continent, Ford confirmed plans to cease production at its São Bernardo do Campo plant in Brazil later this year. Ford decided to close the plant as they’re exiting the heavy commercial truck business in South America. This means the automaker will stop selling the F-350 Trucks aren’t the only thing affected by the closure as the facility also builds the Fiesta In another blow to South American car lovers Ford reiterated they will cease production of the Focus in Argentina Similar to their North American plans, Ford said they will be strengthening their South American portfolio with “SUVs and pickups that are growing in popularity with consumers.” Speaking of the latter, Ford confirmed they will be “leveraging global partnerships, such as the recently announced alliance with VW to develop mid-size pickup trucks.” The decision to close the São Bernardo do Campo plant will likely be met with fierce resistance but Ford said they spent months looking for ways to save the plant and its 2,782 employees The company says this included everything from exploring possible partnerships to selling the operation these ideas were rejected as Ford determined the investments required would have resulted in “no viable path to profitability.” Ford’s president of South America said “We know this action will have a major impact on our employees in São Bernardo and we will be working closely with all our stakeholders on the next steps.” Lyle Watters went on to say “Ford is committed to the South American region by building a sustainable and profitable business with strengthened product offerings and a leaner more agile business model.”
