The giant moved its headquarters to Charlotte, N.C., following its 1998 merger with NationsBank Both followed earlier moves by financial-services company Charles Schwab and health-care giant McKesson to the Lone Star State Numerous other cities have had regional banks absorbed into larger entities following a liberalization of banking rules under President Bill Clinton that allowed banks to more easily buy each other across state lines a banking analyst with RBC Capital Markets “Many of our iconic regional banks that were located in Philadelphia or Los Angeles and their corporate headquarters in those cities were merged into the acquirers’ headquarters outside those cities,” Cassidy said The result was the growth of national banking franchises “When it comes to traditional corporate banking or commercial banking the whole country has blended together,” Cassidy said Wells Fargo’s purchase of troubled Charlotte-based Wachovia Corp. at the height of the financial crisis in 2008 was a transformative event in the history of both banks Wachovia, founded in 1879 no longer exists — but Wells Fargo has grown greatly in size and reach Some 32,000 of the company’s current workers are in North Carolina Other concentrations of employees include 15,700 in Texas 10,600 in Minnesota (Wells Fargo merged in 1998 with Minneapolis-based Norwest Corp.) and 6,200 in New York The number of San Francisco employees was not available who is worried the district is "getting rid of the heart and soul of the schools." Although many of the defunct military structures are in disrepair, the university’s main lab buildings serve as a regional science hub. The site is also home to the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center “It’s the only marine biology center in San Francisco Bay and it’s leading the innovation of how to use nature for sea-level rise resilience,” said Evyan Borgnis Sloane deputy executive officer of the California State Coastal Conservancy and a San Francisco State alum who studied at the center “If you don’t want to see the bay shoreline where you kayak walk and swim be transformed over time to concrete sea walls then you should care about this center closing.” Ironically, if the center closes, Boyer might have to return millions of dollars in research funding, including out of a recent $4.3 million grant from the California State Coastal Conservancy for climate change adaptation and education projects Boyer said she would also have to give back $5.8 million awarded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for a new aquatic research facility the university would likely fence it off and hire security guards to monitor it Stakeholders from across California have joined the Friends of the Estuary and Ocean Science Center reaching out to their representatives and the university to voice their strong support for the center “All the agencies responsible for managing California’s coasts and oceans owe a lot to the studies, education and leadership of the Estuary and Ocean Science Center,” said Rebecca Schwartz Lesberg, the president of consulting firm Coastal Policy Solutions “We provide a service and we do it well but somehow we just can’t seem to convince the outside community that has the means to make a difference that they should,” Boyer said While San Francisco State values the work of the center they just can’t afford to fund it anymore “There are so many people who are like ‘I can’t believe the only marine lab on San Francisco Bay could close,’” Boyer said to be in this kind of dire situation and to have had so much press and to have people not step up “I just have to think that our region has different priorities than what I would have expected.” To learn more about how we use your information, please read our privacy policy. Eldridge’s bat has caught fire in the process. Entering Saturday’s action, he is slashing .300/.382/.500 with one home run and five RBI. That includes a 3-for-4 game to start the month of May, as he had a double and drove in a run. He is on a five-game hitting streak and he is 8-for-21 in those five games. It’s only a matter of time before the power gets more consistent. The Giants opted to send him to Richmond, as opposed to Triple-A Sacramento, as he was recovering from the wrist injury. The move also puts Eldridge closer to his Vienna, Va., home and underscores that he only played 17 games combined last year at Richmond and Sacramento. There was some hope that Eldridge might play his way into a Major League role this spring, even with just 155 minor league games in his career. But the wrist injury took care of that. Now, the Giants are hoping that he’ll be ready for a promotion to Sacramento at some point this season. The imposing 6-foot-7 Eldridge, a left-handed hitter, is expected to be the long-term answer for the Giants at first base. He is universally considered the franchise’s top prospect and a Top 100 prospect in baseball. San Francisco selected him No. 16 overall in 2023 and signed him for a $4 million signing bonus. After his selection, he did a short stint with the Giants’ Arizona Complex League team and the Class A San Jose Giants, where he slashed .294/.400/.505/.905 with six home runs and 19 RBI in 31 games. Last season, Eldridge played for San Jose, High-A Eugene, Richmond and Sacramento, exceling at every stop. He finished with a slash line of .291/.374/.516/.890 with 23 home runs and 92 RBI. He was also selected to play in the MLB Futures Game during All-Star weekend. He even played in the Arizona Fall League, but after a few successful at-bats the Giants put him on the shelf to make sure he was a full go for spring training. Photograph: Courtesy ShutterstockWhen people think of San Francisco the Golden Gate Bridge is usually the first thing that comes to mind – and for good reason The iconic suspension bridge is famous for its Art Deco elements 746-foot tall towers and distinct International Orange color (which would have been black-and-yellow stripes had the Navy had its way when it was completed in 1937) And it’s just as stunning when glistening in the sunlight as it is when peeking out of the fog There’s nothing quite like walking over the bridge which pedestrians can do between 5am and 6:30pm/9pm depending on the season It’s worth planning ahead, though, in order to be able to take a quick ferry ride to the island where you can take a self-guided audio tour narrated by former inmates and guards sharing stories about escape plans and prison riots, or opt for a professionally guided tour where you’ll explore less traveled areas. Time Out tip: For a more intimate and slightly creepy experience, take a night tour, which includes a guided boat tour around the island, as well as behind-the-scenes tours that aren’t offered during the day. Time Out tip: If you’re eager for more activities along the route, check out the Movement climbing gym in a former airplane hangar, or bring a kite and get it soaring. A 2020 UCLA report found that 1 out of 10 CSU students experience homelessness In 2021, lawmakers introduced a bill that established grants to fund affordable housing for students. Apart from the 750 beds at San Francisco State, almost 3,000 more are being added to the California State University system At the state’s community colleges, almost 5,000 beds for low-income students are set to become available in the coming years At the West Grove Commons, students have access to reduced-rate housing meaning they can pay 25% less than the traditional rate served as a resident assistant in the new dorm this year When she started at San Francisco State four years ago she commuted almost two hours from Fairfield twice a week because she couldn’t afford to live on campus the housing is just really expensive and we do have to take out a good amount of loans to be able to afford to live here,” she said “It’s kind of rare to find a good housing situation for an affordable price as a college student here.” In her year living at the West Grove commons she found it welcoming and filled with spaces for students to gather “We have a big living room downstairs with a communal kitchen and I’ve seen a lot of residents cooking with each other “There’s a lot of opportunities for them to study relax and just hang out with one another.” principal architect with EHDD Architecture said she wanted students to have easy access to the health center a need that became clear after the pandemic “There’s sort of a raised awareness around the importance of mental and physical health,” she said “And so combining those pieces into a prominent building where students are used to coming on a day-to-day basis where they’re really familiar with it I think really elevates those services and increases student comfort with using them.” The project was completed just 25 months after the state provided the grant, far less than the four years that housing projects often take to be permitted and completed in California “When the state allocated that funding they didn’t want it to take 10 years — you had to have a shovel-ready project and commit to getting it done,” she said And the architects and the construction company — everybody rode in the same direction as fast as they could.” Our health clinics, hospitals, and programs offer low cost health care to San Francisco residents. imagining himself performing the actions worked for a record seven months without needing to be adjusted such devices have only worked for a day or two The BCI relies on an artificial intelligence (AI) model that can adjust to the small changes that take place in the brain as a person repeats a movement – or in this case an imagined movement – and learns to do it in a more refined way “This blending of learning between humans and AI is the next phase for these brain-computer interfaces,” said neurologist, Karunesh Ganguly, MD, PhD, a professor of neurology and a member of the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences “It’s what we need to achieve sophisticated The study, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), appears March 6 in Cell. who lost his ability to move and speak many years ago by a stroke moves the robotic arm simply by imagining the movements in his head The key was discovering how activity shifts in the brain day to day as a study participant repeatedly imagined making specific movements Once the AI was programmed to account for those shifts Ganguly studied how patterns of brain activity in animals represent specific movements and saw that these patterns changed day-to-day as the animal learned He suspected the same thing was happening in humans and that was why their BCIs so quickly lost the ability to recognize these patterns Ganguly and neurology researcher Nikhilesh Natraj worked with a study participant who had been paralyzed by a stroke years earlier He had tiny sensors implanted on the surface of his brain that could pick up brain activity when he imagined moving To see whether his brain patterns changed over time Ganguly asked the participant to imagine moving different parts of his body the participant’s brain could still produce the signals for a movement when he imagined himself doing it The BCI recorded the brain’s representations of these movements through the sensors on his brain Ganguly’s team found that the shape of representations in the brain stayed the same but their locations shifted slightly from day to day The illustration below shows how the brain-computer interface (BCI) receives brain signals to decode and allow a study participant to move the robotic arm Ganguly then asked the participant to imagine himself making simple movements with his fingers hands or thumbs over the course of two weeks while the sensors recorded his brain activity to train the AI the participant tried to control a robotic arm and hand But the movements still weren’t very precise Ganguly had the participant practice on a virtual robot arm that gave him feedback on the accuracy of his visualizations he got the virtual arm to do what he wanted it to do Once the participant began practicing with the real robot arm it only took a few practice sessions for him to transfer his skills to the real world He could make the robotic arm pick up blocks take out a cup and hold it up to a water dispenser the participant was still able to control the robotic arm after a 15-minute “tune-up” to adjust for how his movement representations had drifted since he had begun using the device Ganguly is now refining the AI models to make the robotic arm move faster and more smoothly and planning to test the BCI in a home environment the ability to feed themselves or get a drink of water would be life changing “I’m very confident that we’ve learned how to build the system now and that we can make this work,” Ganguly said Authors: Other authors of this study include Sarah Seko and Adelyn Tu-Chan of
