This serial World Heritage property comprises the Monastery of the Hieronymites and the Tower of Belém
located on the shore of the Tagus River at the entrance to the port of Lisbon
The Monastery of the Hieronymites is a royal foundation that dates back to the late 15th century
Manuel I and donated to the monks of Saint Hieronymus so that they would pray for the King
and pay spiritual assistance to seafarers that left the shores of Lisbon in quest for the new world
The monastery was also built to perpetuate the memory of Prince Henry the Navigator
Its very rich ornamentation derives from the exuberance typical of Manueline art
Being symbolically linked to the Age of Discoveries
the monastery still preserves most of its magnificent structures
Francisco de Arruda constructed the famous Tower of Belém around 1514
which commemorated the expedition of Vasco da Gama and also served to defend the port of Lisbon
The cross of the Knights of Christ is repeated indefinitely on the parapets of this fortress
while the watch towers that flank it are capped with ribbed cupolas inspired by Islamic architecture
Created by the royal dynasty of Avis at its height
the complex of Belém is one of the most representative examples of Portuguese power during the Age of Discoveries
Criterion (iii): The Monastery of the Hieronymites and Tower of Belém are a unique and exceptional testimony to a 15th and 16th-century civilization and culture
knowledge and courage of the Portuguese people at a time when they consolidated their presence and domain of intercontinental trade routes
Criterion (vi): The complex of Belém is directly associated with the Golden Age of the Discovery and the pioneer role the Portuguese had in the 15th and 16th centuries in creating contacts
dialogue and interchange among different cultures
comprising the complex of Belém that includes the Monastery of the Hieronymites and the Tower of Belém
Despite the changes that both monuments went through over time
they have succeeded in preserving their physical integrity
the church maintains its religious services as the parish of Santa Maria de Belém
The Tower of Belém has preserved its original layout
despite the large changes in the surrounding area caused by landfills and by the silting of the river Tagus
The 103 ha buffer zone around the serial property serves to increase the protection of the settings of the two monuments but the wider setting
still warrants additional protection to ensure that the visual characteristics are maintained
The complex of Belém testifies to Portugal’s cultural apogee in the 16th century and has retained its authenticity in terms of materials
Of particular mention is the stone workmanship of the Monastery and Tower
where building materials are those used in the original construction
Restoration projects implemented by national and local organisations have strictly respected original materials and techniques
The properties maintain their predominant position from an urban point of view
Authenticity has also been maintained in terms of location and setting
as there are no major changes to the original plan
social significance and relationship with the urban setting
The Monastery of the Hieronymites and the Tower of Belém are classified as national monuments by a Decree published in the Government Journal no
In order to ensure enforcement of the Law as the basis for the policy and regulatory system for the protection and enhancement of cultural heritage (Law no
140 of 15 June 2009 established the legal framework for studies
works or interventions carried out for classified cultural assets
the need for a prior and systematic assessment
monitoring and careful analysis of any works that are likely to affect the property’s integrity so as to avoid any disfigurement
This is ensured by appropriate and strict planning
and by careful supervision of any techniques
methodologies and resources to be used for implementation of interventions on cultural properties
309 of 23 October 2009 equates buffer zones with special protection zones
which benefit from adequate restrictions for the protection and enhancement of cultural properties
The key goal of the management arrangements is to preserve the authenticity and integrity of the property as a whole monumental complex through the implementation of a work plan that involves the local community
All the interventions that have been implemented or are programmed comply with current legislation
as well as with strict technical and scientific criteria
Attention is given to the treatment and rehabilitation of the area surrounding the monuments
as these works are to be ensured by local organisations involving both the municipality and the local community
Management of the property is ensured by the decentralised services of the Directorate General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC)
the national administration department responsible for cultural heritage
enhancement and safeguarding measures are ensured by DGPC that is responsible for drawing up an annual programme and implementing it so as to secure the continued future maintenance of the monuments
The creation of a single protection zone for both monuments as well as the enlargement of the buffer zone have been crucial for the integral protection of the property
the wider setting in terms of the important views of the property from the sea will also require careful monitoring and additional protection to ensure that integrity is maintained
The home victory sees Os Tupis beginning their two match November International series in style
The result will see Brazil rising to 25th in the world rankings which are to be updated on Monday
The narrow victory came down to Josh Reeves landing more conversions than Portugal’s Jerónimo Portela
Both Brazil and Portugal scored four tries with the home side’s No8 André Arruda touching down on two occasions
an outcome which meant the Europeans played 30 minutes of the match with one player less than Brazil
Outside center António Vidinha crossed for the first points of the match
His score was converted by fly half Jerónimo Portela to give Os Lobos an early 7-0 advantage
Fly half Josh Reeves looked to do so with a drop-goal only for his attempt to miss the mark
He would make amends shortly thereafter as he converted a try scored from Arruda
It came from a pushover with the No8 touching down for a try converted by Reeves to level the scores
The back-and-forth opening half continued with Portugal responding
The Europeans’ second try was the outcome of a wonderfully directed cross-kick from Appleton
Simão Bento dotted the ball down for what was an unconverted try
What Portugal could do so too could Brazil
Reeves looked to show Portugal that he was also skilled at the cross-kick
His kick fell into the hands of winger Daniel Lima who had a Kotaro Matsushima sized smile on his face as he went over for the score
Reeves’ successful conversion from wide ended the opening half
With it Brazil were 21-12 ahead and looking well positioned to complete a victory
In the second half Portugal would outscore Brazil. Tries came to Storti and replacement Dany Antunes. Brazil’s one try of the second half was decisive in seeing the hosts winning the match. It was score by fullback Daniel Sancery who bagged an Iberian double follow his score against Spain from June
Celebrations will be short-lived for Brazil as Os Tupis now turn their attention to facing the Barbarians on Wednesday
albeit it next Saturday as they face Chile in Santiago

The Penh Art Fair 2021 has officially kicked-off at FT Gallery
This year’s fair showcases around 100 works from 36 local and international artists
This is the first edition of the Penh Art Fair
but the organisers plan to continue to hold it each year going forward
Artists submit their work to The Fair through an open call audition process and the jury then selects the artworks to be exhibited
said: “We designed the open call to allow every artist – Cambodian or international – to submit their artworks
and the works selected by our jury from the open call went into the exhibition.”
There were 80 applicants who sent artwork for the open call and a jury of five artists and curators then voted
This year’s jury members were Sopheap Pich
a Khmer artist who has exhibited his art worldwide; Chhim Sothy
a Khmer painter who also works at the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts; Meta Moeng
curator and one of the leaders of the Sasa Art Projects gallery; and Erick Gonzalez
an artist from Guatemala based in Phnom Penh
“Our jury followed the criteria of trying to select artworks with powerful ideas
innovative techniques and concepts related to contemporary issues
“They selected 36 artists – more than half of them Cambodian – but also international artists from 11 different countries
and all of them exhibiting for the first time together in a big celebration of art and creativity,” Jeronimo told The Post
A black and white etching depicting a group of Rohingya walking across a field was voted best in the show
“The top voted artwork is called Long Walk Home and it touches on the hardship and challenges faced by the Rohingya refugees from Myanmar
It’s by a Bangladeshi artist named Fawaz Rob,” said Jeronimo
originally planned for March then delayed due to Covid-19 restrictions
is now running from June 5 through June 27
The event will see established and emergent contemporary artists expressing their original ideas through various mediums such as installations
In addition to the artworks selected by the jury for display from local and international artists
there are distinguished guest artists whose work is in the show by invitation such as Sopheap Pich
another of the organizers of The Fair and its chief curator
was presenting a sculpture along with a video addressing the topics of balance and equilibrium
Many different topics and various themes are present throughout the exhibition
with the artists given free rein to express whatever they’d like
uses the windows of the train as her frame to take in the vast landscapes and picturesque scenes of Cambodian life along the Phnom Penh-Takeo railway
Rails Window has ten 31 x 41cm photos taken from the same train window
in addition to a collection of 48 miniature photos
“Her camera embarks on a journey where the pictures multiply and follow one another at train speed
once the crossing is over,” according to the catalogue description
Some themes featured prominently at The Fair and seemed to have captured the zeitgeist felt by the artists
such as gender and the role of women in society
the environment and the trade-offs involved with development and social issues dealt with by some of the most underprivileged members of society such as migrants and refugees
“I’m presenting a sound installation called Home related to the dilemmas faced by Cambodian migrants who had to return home during 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Jeronimo
a graphic artist and painter from Battambang province
is taking part in The Fair as a guest artist
She has shown her artworks at past exhibitions including Day Dream by Khmer Sense; Body of Sorrow by Sa Sa Art Projects; and Facing the Climate Change at the Ministry of Environment of Cambodia
“I’ve thought up a performance called Depress and we think that I will do it on June 12
but I’m not sure if it’s completely finished yet or if we still need to make changes,” said Sreymao
mentioning that she had done something similar on her YouTube Channel called Pressure
Entry is free of charge but visitors need to book a tour in advance and follow the safety guidelines required by the Ministry of Health for the prevention of Covid-19
“We’re doing visits by appointment to be able to limit the capacity to 15 people max inside the gallery at any given time
You can book your tour using our online form,” Jeronimo said
The Penh Art Fair is being held at the FT Gallery in the Factory Phnom Penh Artspace and it is open from 10:00am–6:00pm from Tuesday to Saturday and on Sundays 10:00am–1:00pm and 3:00pm–6:00pm
a temperature check at the entry and QR-code scanning too
Social distancing is easy to accomplish since the gallery is ventilated and has a vast area for people to spread out in,” said Jeronimo
Jeronimo said that when the Covid-19 situation improves and it is safe to organise events again
they plan to host some live performances and hold some talks on the nature of contemporary art

The aerial images captured by DIÁRIO show that more than half of the Jerónimo Martins warehouse
was charred due to the fire that broke out on Saturday night
Despite the fact that a large part of the infrastructure burned down
it is likely that the entire warehouse was affected due to the rapid spread of the fire
which generated a large apparatus and mobilized four fire brigades to the site
but there is still a lot of smoke in the place
some houses had to be evacuated due to the proximity of the fire
and the PSP created a security perimeter to keep the many people who went to the area to see the fire away
a team of Firefighters Sapadores do Funchal continues
