The Jesuit reductions are a tourist attraction in Rio Grande do Sul
The best known of them is the Reduction of São Miguel de Arcanjo
whose ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site
It was precisely this reduction that was expanded due to a population increase
creating the Reduction of São João Batista
founded in 1697 by the Jesuit Antônio Sepp and which later gave rise to the municipality of Cruz Alta
the hometown of the writer Érico Veríssimo — located 364 km from Porto Alegre.
In this city, Brother Edison Hüttner, a teacher at School of Humanities from PUCRS, visited a family that owned a sculpture of Saint John the Baptist and wanted to discover the historical value of the piece. The professor carried out studies that confirmed that the work is from the missionary period, over 300 years old.
This is the first sculpture of an adult Saint John the Baptist Missionary found in Rio Grande do Sul, being considered an important find in the history of the state. It will be exhibited at the Cathedral of the Divine Holy Spirit, in Cruz Alta, until August 24th and then will return to the guardian family.
Second phase (1670-1695): the sculptures ceased to be assembled and began to resemble the European baroque. Their garments were complete and openwork.
Third phase (Santa Maria de Fe, 1685-1690): the clothes of the figures represented are cloaks with flattened folds.
Fourth phase (Rio-Grandense Period, 1696-1785): also known as the period of the Reform of José Brasanelli, it reveals a free and gestural style, with exuberant figures, covered with cloths blowing in the wind, with expressiveness of the Berninian European Baroque and other styles. Between 1730 and 1768, Brasanelli's models spread and a unique missionary style was created.

Text description provided by the architects. Located in a village in the interior of Portugal, Touro - Vila Nova de Paiva. Designed by José Morgado, a designer who lives and works in the village.
This work was born out of the desire and generosity of the people of the small village to build a temple dedicated to St John the Baptist.
torn by stereotomy and subtracted from the stylised form of the "house" shape
is intended to be the home of St John the Baptist in the village
who wears a simple appearance indicating the streak of light as a divine symbol

Feliz Almada is the name of the festive program to liven up this Christmas on the south bank
which this year brings many new things for the whole family
One of the biggest Christmas events on the south bank takes place in Almada
and will once again welcome all children and families from December 6 until December 30
with free concerts running until New Year’s Eve
With lots of free concerts, humor, magic, a Christmas market, free shows for the little ones and, of course, an ice rink, the Feliz Almada event offers a wide variety of unmissable proposals.
The Christmas Market will be located in Praça São João Batista and there you’ll be able to find that fantastic, original gift, created by artisans, plastic artists, designers and even farmers from various parts of the country.
Companies and charities fill the remaining stalls, ready to help those in need with personalized gifts.
The youngest are the most interested in bringing their parents to Almada Christmas.
As well as being able to watch children’s shows, they’ll be able to enjoy the various Christmas attractions , such as the ice rink, the Parisian carousel, the electric Christmas train and lots of interactive spaces to take photos, such as the “Giant Bank”, the giant decorated “Wreaths”, “Cinderella’s Carriage” or the inflatable in the shape of a “Snow Globe” , attractions that we’re sure the little ones will love.
Now for some news for the older ones: free concerts, fireworks and shows!
The Feliz Almada event tent, among other places, will host some of the best-known national artists, such as Marisa Liz, Carminho and Herman José.
The entire program for the festivities in Almada can be found on the municipality’s website or here.

Forte São João BaptistaMachico
Sadly the Fort in Funchal with the same name is equally being allowed to fall into disrepair
Most of the miradoro zone in the park surrounded the Fort has been fenced off for ages due to risks of borders falling from the walls of the Fort
My guess is as before the Funchal council and the regional government are arguing over who is responsible for covering the repair costs
Why spend a few thousand today on essential maintenance when you can wait years and end up with a renovation costing millions
Maybe it’s another project awaiting more funds from the EU
Or maybe certain politicians want the excuse to sell the entire edifice off for a song to one of their mates to turn into either a hotel or maybe another Disney like amusement Park

After these building materials cooled and were stacked to form a church
school and other buildings at Santo Ângelo
the magnetite inside retained this reshuffled alignment
a record of the magnetic past sealed away like a proverbial mosquito in amber
Along with several dozen other Jesuit missions built in the same era
Santo Ângelo flourished briefly along what was then the poorly defined border between the Spanish and Portuguese colonies in South America
the mission was home to about 8,000 people
nearly all of them indigenous Guarani whom the Jesuits were trying to Christianize
represents the first archeomagnetic survey undertaken in the region
and suggests that current models of earth’s dynamic magnetic field need refining
it suggests that the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) – a large and growing weak spot in the earth’s magnetic field centered roughly over southern Brazil – may have arrived over South America centuries earlier than was previously thought
“We think it may have reached this region around 1600
meaning it grew earlier than people had predicted,” Poletti said
That adds significant practical implications to understanding the development and future behavior of the SAA
While the reasons behind the appearance and spread of this weak spot in the earth’s magnetic field have yet to be fully understood
the phenomenon may be linked to the periodic magnetic reversals that the earth undergoes
“This could actually be the start of our [magnetic] field flipping,” says Alexa Halford
a NASA scientist based at the Goddard Space Flight Center
Because the SAA was only discovered in 1958
our understanding of its historical development relies heavily on modeling and the relatively sparse archeomagnetic data like that recently recorded by Poletti’s team
Over 90 percent of the archeomagnetic sampling that informs these models was conducted in the Northern Hemisphere
That gives him extra incentive to continue his work in Brazil and help build a more comprehensive set of global data to refine the models of earth’s changing magnetic field
“Understanding this entire process [of geomagnetic reversal] may not seem like it’s important for tomorrow or 10 years for now
but understanding how it’s changing will give us a way to prepare for the future,’ Halford added
“If it continues to grow in size and decrease in value
this is a serious issue [for spaceflight],” says John Geissman
professor of geosciences at the University of Texas at Dallas
Poletti’s future research plans include an archeomagnetic survey over the past 3,000 years in the Amazon basin
It’s a region ripe for such work because it’s full of ceramic fragments – a legacy of its long history of human occupation – that have never been scrutinized for clues about the earth’s magnetic past
Poletti has also using a worldwide database of past archeomagnetic studies to further investigate the suggestion
gleaned from the ruined Jesuit missions of southern Brazil
that the SAA was bigger in centuries past than we’d thought
we’ll understand variations in the magnetic field [in the Amazon] over the last 3,000 years … [and] better understand the development of the SAA and its influence on the global magnetic field,” he said
