Operator says that slope was too steep for cranes
Equinix has completed its RJ3 facility in Rio de Janeiro
Located in the Sao Joao de Meriti municipality, the 560-rack facility was first announced in May last year, alongside a $94 million investment
The facility spans 1,467 sqm (15,800 sq ft)
though other specifications have not been disclosed
The power installation for the facility was assisted by a helicopter, as detailed in the company’s recent LinkedIn announcement
Whilst the facility is powered with 100 percent renewable energy
the operator has faced concerns about its environmental footprint during the construction stage
SVP at AtlasEdge and former Equinix innovation director
commented on the post: “50 percent of the lifetime CO2 of a [data center] comes from construction and the embodied carbon of the infrastructure to build it
Flying stuff in with helicopters hardly makes that less bad.”
Compass’ director of client management, Canada and EMEA, Adam B. responded in a LinkedIn post: “Interesting to see one of the world’s largest data center operators posting a video this morning
bragging about using a helicopter in the construction of one of their facilities
“As an industry that consumes ever larger amounts of resources
we need to be mindful of doing the right thing and working in the right way for the public good.”
Equinix said in a statement to DCD: "RJ3 is the first Equinix greenfield project in Rio
Equinix had to connect the land to the utility transmission lines by building a high voltage (HV) pole up a steep slope
"By utilizing a helicopter in this unique situation
Equinix was able to build the pole in a fast and efficient way
and minimizing environmental impact to the surrounding flora and fauna."
The company added environmental sustainability is "a fundamental tenet of [its] operations." The company's sustainability initiatives currently include Whole Building Life Cycle Analyses to prioritize data-driven decisions about sustainable design and materials choices
a three-step hierarchy to reduce embodied carbon; and following US Green Building Council guidelines
ensuring all buildings are certified to a LEED standard
RJ3 is located near Equinix’s existing data centers in Rio Janeiro: RJ1 in Botafogo
The company said the three data centers will be connected
including a redundant fiber link between RJ2 and RJ3
Rio de Janeiro is a landing point for eight submarine cables
Equinix said this will give RJ3 access to broad connectivity and direct access to the US and Central America
Other operators in Rio de Janeiro include Ascenty, Scala, and Aligned. CloudHQ has also previously announced plans to develop a new data center campus in Rio de Janeiro

Equinix is investing $94 million into its third Rio de Janeiro data center in Brazil
The RJ3 facility is to be located in the Sao Joao de Meriti municipality
around 30km from the Botafago neighborhood in the capital
will have 560 racks across 1467 sqm (15,800 sqft) of colocation space
Other specifications have not been disclosed
Equinix said all its core digital and interconnection facilities will be available to customers from the start of operations
allowing direct connection with cloud providers such as AWS
RJ3 will also be located near Equinix’s existing data centers in Rio Janeiro: RJ1 in Botafogo
“Rio de Janeiro is one of the largest consumer markets in the country and a hub for strategic sectors
So expanding our local presence was the natural path for Equinix,” said Victor Arnaud
He added the company’s investment was the largest made by a data center company in the state and would allow Equinix to support more companies in their digital infrastructure journeys

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Reports are emerging of Brazilian health workers forced to intubate patients without the aid of sedatives
after weeks of warnings that hospitals and state governments risked running out of critical medicines
One doctor at the Albert Schweitzer municipal hospital in Rio de Janeiro told the Associated Press that for days health workers diluted sedatives to make their stock last longer
nurses and doctors had to begin using neuromuscular blockers and tying patients to their beds
“You relax the muscles and do the procedure easily
but we don’t have sedation,” said the doctor
who agreed to discuss the sensitive situation only if not quoted by name
Lack of required medicines is the latest pandemic problem to befall Brazil
which is experiencing a brutal COVID-19 outbreak that has flooded the nation’s intensive care units
The daily death count is averaging about 3,000
accounting for a quarter of deaths globally and making Brazil the epicenter of the pandemic
sedatives and other medications used to put severely ill patients on ventilators
The press office of Rio city's health secretariat said in an email that occasional shortages at the Albert Schweitzer facility are due to difficulties obtaining supplies on the global market and that “substitutions are made so that there is no damage to the assistance provided.” It didn't comment on the need to tie patients to beds
The newspaper O Globo on Thursday reported similar ordeals in several other hospitals in the Rio metropolitan region
with people desperately calling other facilities seeking sedatives for their loved ones
It’s unclear whether the problem seen in Rio remains an isolated case
but others are sounding the alarm about impending shortages
Sao Paulo state's health secretary, Jean Carlo Gorinchteyn, said at a news conference Wednesday that the situation was dire in the hospitals of Brazil's most-populous state
more than 640 hospitals were on the verge of collapse
“We need the federal government's support,” Gorinchteyn said
“This is not a necessity for Sao Paulo; it is a necessity for the whole country.”
His state's health officials sent nine requests for intubation medication to the Health Ministry over the past 40 days
Its last delivery was enough to cover just 6% of monthly needs in the state’s public health network
said Wednesday that a shipment of sedatives was expected to arrive in Brazil “in the next ten days.” It is the result of a contract signed with the Pan American Health Organization
He said two separate efforts to acquire medications on the international market are underway “to end this day-to-day struggle.”
the ministry has also been facing logistical constraints on getting oxygen delivered to hospitals across the country
Queiroga said it remains "a daily concern
A more contagious coronavirus variant, known as P.1, has been spreading across Brazil this year
It may also be more aggressive than the original strain
and health workers have reported patients requiring far more oxygen than last year
The private sector has stepped up to help address some of the supply shortfall
A group of seven large companies donated 3.4 million doses of intubation drugs — enough for the management of 500 beds for six weeks — to the Health Ministry
A first batch of 2.3 million was scheduled to arrive from China late Thursday at Sao Paulo's international airport and would be distributed to states with critical shortages
the ministry said in an emailed response to AP questions about supply bottlenecks
the Health Ministry requisitioned intubation medications from laboratories
reportedly as a means to distribute to the neediest hospitals
That has caused others facilities’ stocks to dwindle
director of an association of more than 2,000 hospitals nationwide
the health sector will be in chaos,” Rogatti said on Globo News TV
Shortages aren’t limited to the public sector
Brazil’s private hospital association published a survey Thursday in which nine of 71 institutions reported having supplies for five days or less
About half said they had enough for a week
Private facilities are looking to import medications from India
The city of Itaiopolis in southern Santa Catarina state this week reported shortages of both sedatives and oxygen
Neighboring Rio Grande do Sul state also reported supplies running out
“The situation is desperate,” Rio Grande do Sul’s health secretary
“We urgently need the Health Ministry to replenish hospitals’ stocks
or else intubated patients can wake up without medication

Scala Data Center has commenced operations at its new Rio de Janeiro data center
The Brazilian data center provides a hyperscale capacity of 7.2MW and currently houses one anchor tenant
The SGIGSM01 facility is located on the São João do Meriti campus
which will offer 55MW of IT capacity at full build-out
The new data center was built using Scala’s ‘FastDeploy,’ a proprietary design and construction methodology using modular structures that have been manufactured by Modular Data Centers
The company claims this allowed it to deploy 'in record time'
with construction starting in August 2022 and finishing in April 2023
The SGIGSM01 was first announced alongside the launch of FastDeploy in September 2022
“Our newest baby bringing light to a once dark place for hyperscalers," CEO Marcos Vinícius Peigo said on LinkedIn
"Rio de Janeiro is now also enabled into the future!”
Scala currently has five operational data centers across Brazil, offering a total capacity of 50MW. The company has another five facilities planned for 2023, three of which are for the São Paulo Tambore campus
The company was formed by Digital Colony (now DigitalBridge) in 2020
Scala Data Centers has expanded across Latin America
In October 2022, the company received a license to build a $400m campus in Chile with a total capacity of 120MW, and the next month signed a 1.6GW power purchase agreement (PPA) with Enel Americas for its data centers in Chile

Sr....
