-- The WTA announced Wednesday that Sao Paulo will return to the Hologic WTA Tour in September for the first time in 25 years
The WTA 250 SP Open will take place the week of Sept
8 (replacing the Jasmin Open in Monastir) and will be played on outdoor hard courts with a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw
It marks the first time a WTA tournament has been held in Sao Paulo since 2000
when the Brasil Open was staged in the city
Rita Kuti-Kis of Hungary was crowned the singles champion and the Argentine team of Laura Montalvo and Paola Suarez won the doubles title
The announcement of Sao Paulo’s return to the Hologic WTA Tour comes after an exciting start to the 2025 season in which there have already been 15 different singles champions at WTA 250
including Mirra Andreeva’s history-making achievement in becoming the youngest-ever winner of a WTA 1000 title
The early-season drama, along with the launch of the WTA’s bold new brand identity, has helped to fuel record social media growth with WTA followers up 25% year-on-year at the end of March and total video views up 163% in the first quarter. Click here to see the full 2025 Hologic WTA Tour calendar.

it just didn't feel right to try to squeeze it in
I promised myself I'd make a separate trip one day
and I am comforted and thrilled by the abundance
well-appointed space caught my eye and seemed just the kind of calming atmosphere to recharge in while exploring this vast and hectic town
A corner in the apartment featuring an easel
I landed in Congonhas–Deputado Freitas Nobre Airport
which is closer to Jardins than the larger Guarulhos Airport
I took a 30-minute car ride to the apartment
located on the second floor of a high-end modernist building on a quiet street a few blocks from the main thoroughfare of Avenida Paulista
Because there’s a doorman and a coded lock on the apartment door
I could see how well the photos in the listing represented the charms of the space
An entryway opened into a huge main room containing a dining area
and an office where a minimalist desk faces the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the street
It was the perfect location for journaling
if not catching up on some work while observing the life outside
To the right of the desk was a cozy sitting nook with a sofa and a beautiful wood and leather Brazilian lounge chair I wanted for my apartment back home
Plants were dispersed here and there to bring a little “jardim” inside
But any description would be incomplete without mentioning the art
Almost every wall boasted a dramatic oversized canvas or a collection of smaller pieces
One painting rested on an easel beside a director’s chair
The bedroom with a side table and white linens
Walking back to Jardins, I came across a shopping district devoted to interior and home design. I popped into a few, dreaming of decorating a São Paulo terraced apartment. For something you could actually fit in your luggage, peruse the chic goods at Dpot Objeto—if you’re looking to drop some serious cash, that is.
With all the eating and shopping nearby, it was always easy to swing back to the Atelier 11 to drop off my bags, chill in the serene sitting room while piano music from the dance school drifted in (really, the only noise I heard throughout my stay), and rest easy knowing there was still so much more to discover in Sampa.

14-story tower of Sao Paulo Museum of Art — better known as MASP after its initials and one of the country’s most visited — opened its doors on March 28
bringing to completion its architectural vision 77 years after the museum was inaugurated
The tower is named after the museum’s first artistic director
The new building more than doubles the museum space to 7,821 square meters (84,184 square feet)
increasing MASP’s exhibition capacity by 66%
Its façade is made of perforated and pleated metal sheets
which add to the brutalist style conception of the original building next to it
Construction started in 2019 and was entirely sponsored by donors who spent about 250 million Brazilian reais ($43 million) on the project
inspired by vertical museum typologies such as those in New York City
“MASP is the main museum in the Southern Hemisphere in terms of European art collection,” said said Paulo Vicelli
MASP’s director for experience and communication
“We have more than 11,000 works; Amedeo Modigliani
“Everyone who comes leaves a different person.”
The original MASP building was in a different venue for 20 years but then in 1968 moved to the Paulista Avenue
a form characterized by exposed concrete structures
emphasis on raw materials and monumental scale — is the work of architect Lina Bo Bardi
it has become one of Sao Paulo’s most recognizable touristic attractions
“MASP has grown and become bigger than its building
It was necessary to push the boundaries,” said museum director Heitor Martins
An underground walkway connecting the two buildings is expected to be completed in November
visitors will have to briefly step out on the busy Paulista Avenue to move from one building to the other
a 60-year old tourist from the southern city of Porto Alegre
said she was moved when she saw MASP’s new tower
but found a way to squeeze a museum visit into her schedule
“This is a landmark for Brazilian art,” she said

Investors have been piling into emerging market bonds as Treasurys' long-held reputation as a safe haven took a beating following U.S
President Donald Trump's "reciprocal" tariffs
Emerging market local currency bond yields slid by 13 basis points between April 2 — when Trump announced the tariffs — and April 25
according to the most recent data provided by JPMorgan
the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield rose by more than 7 basis points during the same period
"We are seeing that pickup into emerging market fixed income assets," said Brandywine Global Investment Management's portfolio manager Carol Lye
Brazil and South Africa were some of the countries that could see more demand for their bonds
Get top local Philly stories delivered to you every morning with NBC Philadelphia's News Headlines newsletter
As these bonds are priced in the domestic currency
overseas investors' purchases also increases the demand for the local currency
So that premium pays us to be there [emerging markets]
and the currencies are also benefiting from that shift out of the dollar story," Lye said
"This is an effort by investors to diversify away from the U.S
particularly local investors," said Mark Mobius
chairman of Mobius Emerging Opportunities Fund
adding that domestic investors of emerging markets likely to be among those rotating out from U.S
Treasurys into these fixed income assets due to their exposure to the local currency
Treasurys sell-off also saw a rush toward alternate safe-haven assets such as Euro bonds and Japanese government bonds
but given they are developed markets that rotation was not an unusual occurrence
What's surprised investors about emerging markets is the common narrative and expectations that they "won't be holding up" with an impending U.S
"I think a lot of people are being proven wrong
adding that there's enough fiscal buffers and monetary space with some of these countries to offset growth concerns
Other market watchers noted that emerging market local currency fixed income tends to fare better than other counterparts when the greenback is under pressure
EM local currency fixed income would tend to outperform most other fixed income assets," said Tadas Gedminas
vice president of the investment bank's global emerging market strategy research team
are beginning to view emerging markets through an "entirely new lens," said Paul Benson
head of systematic fixed income at Insight Investment
investors tried to invest overseas such as in emerging market bonds
they often lost money once the dollar strengthened
A strong dollar shrinks the profits from investments made in other currencies
"But the Sturm und Drang of 2025 has finally turned the tables," he said
adding that the relative underperformance of U.S
risk assets and even typical safe havens such as the greenback and Treasurys has intrigued domestic investors about opportunities they may be missing abroad
Aberdeen Investments' director of fixed income Viktor Szabó
said that while he likes emerging market local currency bonds
it is still "early days" to determine exactly where global investors are rotating their bond positions
Aberdeen also noted that rather than pulling out from U.S
some investors have rotated from the long-dated bonds to short-duration ones like the 2-year Treasurys
2-year Treasury yields fell in the days that followed Trump's April 2 tariffs while the 30-year Treasury yield saw a more than 30 basis points spike within a week
The benchmark 10-year yield also rose by 30 basis points
Treasurys were the ultimate safe asset for a very long time
many investors would have to completely rethink their asset allocation," Benson said

If you want to mix alcohol and site-seeing, Mendes says to check out Fel and Paloma
both of which are located in the Copan Building
designed by the Brazilian modernist architect Oscar Niemeyer
Where to Shop “Shopping in São Paulo is, sadly, very much concentrated in shopping malls,” says Lo Schiavo. “If you must, try Iguatemi
which was the first and perhaps the most prestigious mall.” If you want to avoid malls altogether
try strolling around the upscale neighborhood Jardins
a luxurious shopping environment designed by Eric Carlson and his office CARBONDALE
Lo Schiavo also recommends Pinga, which has the “greatest selection of Brazilian fashion in a house-like atmosphere.” Mendes suggests visiting Egrey and Handred “for local and stylish brands.”
Where to See Art From galleries and museums to street and public art
the “contemporary art scene in São Paulo is great,” says Dantas
He recommends visiting the art hubs Casa Bradesco
a modernist cultural center built by Lina Bo Bardi

Where to Listen to Music “Don’t miss the breathtaking Sala São Paulo,” says Mendes
“featuring the renowned conductor Thierry Fischer.” Lo Schiavo also recommends a visit
It’s “home to the São Paulo State Symphonic Orchestra
one of the leading orchestras in the world.”

When Brazilian-American filmmaker Denise Zmekhol discovers that her late father's most celebrated work as an architect is now São Paulo’s tallest homeless occupation
she begins a journey to reckon with her past and the harsh inequality transforming the country of her birth
Her initially personal quest forces her to face a growing global crisis: one in six people in the world are squatters
The film evolves as a poetic essay on displacement
and the role of architecture in urban life
A modernist icon affectionately known as “Pele de Vidro” (Skin of Glass)
the building itself becomes a central character
Conceived in the vibrant era of Bossa Nova and Cinema Novo
it was built in the early days of a dictatorship that would hold power for two decades
through in-depth interactions with the homeless who occupied her father’s building
Denise starts to see Pele de Vidro from a larger perspective
The dramatic changes that transform the building reflect Brazil itself during eras of darkness
The film builds a searing portrait of a country in crisis through the personal story of a father and daughter and the built environment of São Paulo where their lives

sits on the outskirts of São Paulo and is home to 65 small farmers who help supply Brazil’s largest city with fruits and vegetables free of agrichemicals
an Italian nun and human rights activist who for half a century fought for Brazil’s poor and landless people
“I knew Sister Alberta through the Catholic Church and her work in the east of São Paulo
where I used to live,” says community member Roseãngela Filomena
a silver-haired 62-year-old with a generous smile
“She introduced me to the Landless Workers’ Movement [MST] and encouraged me to take part in a rural occupation.”
MST was founded in 1984 by peasants and progressive members of the Catholic Church
aimed at pushing for fairer land distribution and drastic agrarian reform across Brazil
MST is currently one of the biggest and most controversial social movements in Brazil
as it seeks to achieve its goals by occupying idle-lying rural lands — an act many see as criminal
MST says it attempts to force the state to implement Article 184 of the 1988 constitution
which requires the state to expropriate a rural property “which is not performing its social function
Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court ruled that land occupations that aim to hasten agrarian reform are “substantially distinct” from criminal acts against property
“It is mandatory for the state to expropriate land which does not fulfill its constitutional social function,” Sérgio Sauer
a professor of sociology at the University of Brasília
“Land occupation becomes a social struggle pushing the state to fulfill its obligation and move reform ahead
MST has helped some 450,000 Brazilian families acquire a plot of land
while some 65,000 families continue to live in rural occupations still awaiting a final solution
Among the latter are the people of Terra Irmã Alberta
Roseãngela and some 600 other MST members and sympathizers occupied a former eucalyptus plantation spanning some 120 hectares (300 acres) west of São Paulo
the water and waste management company for the state of São Paulo
which planned to transform it into a landfill
“We entered around midnight,” says Roseãngela
“A local NGO helped us to build makeshift shelters
as the police cannot enter a ‘home’ without legal permission.”
But the police didn’t show up the next day
the occupation enjoyed strong unofficial support from the church
as people nearby didn’t want to see a landfill on their doorstep
“On the first day she forced me to go back with her,” Roseãngela tells Mongabay
“She thought I was mad to live in the middle of nowhere with a 2-year-old child
I went back with her by car to calm her down
But the next morning I immediately returned by bus
While the state-owned firm remains the legal owner of the land
It gave each family half a hectare (1.2 acres) to build a home and carry out eco-friendly farming
They’re not allowed to sell the land or subdivide it
A communal garden grows fruits and vegetables that are sold in the city
SABESP agreed to comment on its current agreement with MST regarding Comuna Irmã Alberta and its plans for the enclave
But it hadn’t responded by the time this story was published
Roseãngela turned her half-hectare into a garden growing medicinal plants
She sells the herbs or uses them to make natural elixirs
All MST members are encouraged to get an education
Comuna da Terra Irmã Alberta is currently building a school that will be open for all to learn about agroecology
Brazil is one of the most unequal countries in the world when it comes to land ownership. According to the 2017 agricultural census by IBGE
the national statistics and geography agency
81% of farms are up to 50 hectares (124 acres) in size
yet represent only 12.8% of the total rural land area
Nearly a third of the country’s rural area is held by just 0.3% of agricultural establishments
each owning an average of more than 2,500 hectares (about 6,200 acres)
USAID estimated in 2011 that 1% of the Brazilian population owned 45% of all land
while nearly 5 million families were landless and nearly 100 million hectares (247 million acres) of rural lands — an area half the size of Greenland — remained uncultivated
The roots of this inequality go back to the colonial era
Brazil was divided into 15 rectangular-shaped “captaincies,” each run as fiefdoms by Portuguese noblemen
The 1850 Land Law stated that the only way to gain access to public lands
in a country steeped in colonialism and slavery for centuries
as Brazil’s military regime pushed for agricultural growth and modernization by offering state incentives such as cheap credit to encourage farmers to invest in land
“This mainly enabled big landowners to acquire even more land
especially on the agricultural frontier,” Sauer says
“It further added to the concentration of land [ownership] and further widened the ownership divide.”
Despite Article 184 of Brazil’s Constitution, land and even buildings in many states across the country have lain empty for decades, according to the USAID
there were some 280,000 abandoned properties and 130,000 homeless families in 2017
USAID flagged a similar paradox: 74% of farmers own 24% of all arable land
while agribusiness controls 76% of the arable land
Two million farming families have an average monthly income of just $15 and need government aid
The struggle for land has long been a dominant feature of Brazilian politics. According to historians, a proposal for land reform was a major reason for the military coup that toppled President João Goulart in 1964
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva passed a decree creating the Terra da Gente (Land of the People) program
it aims to help 295,000 farming families acquire land or legalize their informal situation
received 520 million reais ($88 million) to expropriate and allocate land in 2024
But with Congress dominated by the agribusiness lobby
Lula still faces an uphill battle when it comes to reforming farming
the lower House passed a bill that would penalize people occupying public or private land by excluding them from receiving any public benefits
including those related to agrarian reform programs
former minister of environment under Jair Bolsonaro
“This is the beginning of the end for MST,” Salles said
On the same day that Lula launched Terra da Gente
MST occupied a 200-hectare (500-acre) area outside the city of Campinas
about 100 kilometers (60 miles) west of São Paulo
the developer requested Campinas municipal authorities to alter the land’s designation in the zoning plan from “rural” to “urban,” which would allow it to build a multistory apartment block
as every April the MST commemorates the massacre of Eldorado do Carajás
about 1,500 people assembled on a highway near the town of Eldorado do Carajás in the state of Pará to march on the provincial capital
Instructed to prevent a blockade of the highway “at all costs,” local police opened fire with automatic rifles
Land conflicts aren’t a relic of Brazil’s past. According to data from the Pastoral Land Commission (CPT), a Catholic Church-affiliated advocacy group, in 2023 Brazil recorded 1,724 rural land conflicts, the highest number since the organization began keeping records in 1985
put a gun to her head and told her to leave
“He was a follower of Bolsonaro who used to refer to MST as a ‘terrorist organization,’” Roseãngela tells Mongabay
I made it clear to him that I’d rather die than go anywhere else.”
Past several small farms surrounded by fields of lettuce
as well as numerous structures under construction
Roseãngela’s sister Iris lives in the heart of Irmã Alberta
“I was worried about my sister,” says 64-year-old Iris
“At the time there was a plantation of eucalyptus trees that had just been cut
What was my sister going to do in the middle of nowhere?”
Iris returned every week to pick up their laundry and bring clean clothes and food
After two of her own children died in a tragic car crash
“I needed a fresh start away from the city,” she says
Iris and her husband have a lush garden where they grow acerola
and “a tree the birds like.” No irrigation needed; the rains are enough
Iris says she’s happy living off her garden
It’s not easy to live without a sense of security
Because she doesn’t officially own the land
everything she’s built over the last 22 years could be gone tomorrow if SABESP changes its mind
“But I think SABESP and MST will reach an agreement before the end of the year,” she says
dozens of people not affiliated with MST have moved into the enclave
sisters Iris and Roseãngela say they have no regrets about moving away from São Paulo and helping establish Irma Alberta
The “fortress conservation” model is under pressure in East Africa
as protected areas become battlegrounds over history
and global efforts to halt biodiversity loss
Mongabay’s Special Issue goes beyond the region’s world-renowned safaris to examine how rural communities and governments are reckoning with conservation’s colonial origins
and trying to forge a path forward […]

Few cities sprawl as far and wide as the Brazilian financial capital
design and cultural diversity that feels similarly endless
We pounded the pavement to uncover the city’s unexpected treasures—and its most seductive beats
By Brandon Presser
It should come as no surprise that within 24 hours of arriving in São Paulo, I’d been whisked away by new friends to see samba. It was 2 a.m., deep within Ó do Borogodó
and a cadre of mustachioed musicians was shaking the dilapidated room with the vibrato of their instruments while onlookers swayed and cheered—cellphones recording in one hand and too-sweet caipirinhas in the other
It felt like the Brazilian equivalent of watching the aurora borealis: a serendipitous
almost magical collision of energy found only here and now
Samba may be more generally Brazilian than specifically from São Paulo
but the word borogodó is Paulistano to its core
Locals could only translate it loosely for me as “messy charisma,“ “jolie-laide,“ “ugly-sexy,” “panache” or
But everyone I spoke to agreed that São Paulo has borogodó aplenty
the city is also the biggest metropolitan area on the continent
with miles upon miles of residential high-rises that are often used to place-set futuristic movies
And between the weatherworn concrete canyons is much more than just São Paulo’s famous gridlock
There are beach-bodied locals that gather by the thousands to play soccer at Ibirapuera Park
the city’s largest green space; twentysomethings flirting at trendy
tile-clad pubs called botecos; and commuters blasting everything from bossa nova to funky brega beats from their car windows
but do as the locals do and use it to hail a regular taxi—they’re usually more comfortable and slightly cheaper and can bypass traffic in special taxi-only lanes
the city has an array of walkable pockets (and a gleaming safe metro to boot)
But it’s a place where common sense pays dividends: Keep your cellphone and wallet safely tucked away
and refrain from wandering off down obscure side streets
Paulistanos discourage even a two-block post-dinner walk
And as for the most borogodó things to see and do
Here’s a cheat sheet to help you make the most of your visit
The details you really need to know to stay in comfort
Fasano Hotel São Paulo ItaimFasano is Brazil’s biggest homegrown luxury label
and its OG flagship hotel—a block away from the posh boutiques on Rua Oscar Freire—is dark as a humidor
just a seven-minute Uber ride away in Itaim Bibi
The 20th-floor rooftop lap pool was a real highlight with its soaring metropolis views
Ditto the concierge team’s can-do attitude
a real boon in a country where you often need a CPF—a Brazilian social security number—to book simple things like concert tickets
samba lessons or tennis court slots.Rooms from $575
The Boutique StayThe prize for most Instagrammable lobby goes to the Pulso Hotel
low-slung seating and an interior garden of thriving fiddle-leaf ferns
Some rooms are small—and occasionally they’re more stylish than functional
(Think: cool-looking sink taps that are impossible to turn off with wet hands.) No matter
You’re here to take advantage of the Pinheiros-adjacent location
steps away from some of the city’s best restaurants and bars.Rooms from $420
All-Day DiningOur favorite restaurants for every meal
sandwiched by breakfast at the local padaria (“bakery) and a light dinner around 8 p.m
Botecos are the main cornerstone of São Paulo culture
filled with live music and locals watching the day’s soccer match over beer and fried snacks
the national dish of stewed meat and black beans
is served only at lunch on Wednesday and Saturday (it’s too heavy to eat before bed)
since São Paulo’s Italian population is the largest outside Italy
You’ll see an optional 12% or 13% service fee on restaurant bills—it’s good manners to pay it
● Cora A favorite among lunching “coxipsters” (Paulistano yuppies) on weekends, Cora’s sixth-floor roof patio is a downtown oasis with sprawling city views
The menu puts a Middle Eastern slant on the freshest regional produce
because in addition to being heavily Italian
São Paulo boasts one of the biggest Lebanese and Syrian expat communities in the world
tuna drenched in sesame oil and a cauliflower steak that comes lavished in tahini and mint
scallop vichyssoise and the “Bobó Tonton,” composed of succulent prawns with basmati rice
grilled banana and farofa (granulated cassava meal)
It’s a midday meal far tastier than more-renown options charging five times as much
● Barbacoa Summarily described by a friend as a “waterfall of meat,” Barbacoa is São Paulo’s premiere all-you-can-eat churrascaria experience
For the uninitiated: These meals typically start with a salad buffet of cruise ship proportions
then involve flipping coins on your table between red and green to grab the attention of apron-clad
flank and sirloin with surgeonlike precision—along with the must-try cupim
or “guidebook,“ to help you along.) The sprawling venue certainly hasn’t updated its decor since its founding in 1990
Evvai’s 15-course dinner cranks up the volume for every bite of its Italian-inspired menu—every mouthful is intense
Case in point: a midmeal course nibble called the “scallop bomb” that’s wrapped in mandioquinha dough and fried up in duck fat for a proper explosion of flavor
the open kitchen is lit like a theater in the round; the tables in its orbit are all laden with unlikely foods that range from challah to crayfish and okra
(I especially loved the sea urchin dish dressed with a cardamom-spiced beet puree.) After some 10 courses
guests retreat to an upstairs lounge to enjoy a smattering of petit fours and a must-try board of domestic cheeses
My only reservation (pun intended) about both
● Murakami and Goya ZushiSão Paulo has the largest Japanese population outside Japan (are you sensing a theme?), which makes for great sushi. Prioritize the omakase menu with warm dishes at Murakami
It’s immaculately prepared and served with a side of lively banter (in English or Portuguese) from the namesake chef
He even broke out in song at one point while serving his signature temaki handroll with prawn
If it’s Sunday, Paulistano pizza night, hit up Picco for the namesake pie, festooned in spicy, slippery pepperoni—this is a spot where one must seemingly have a face tattoo to be on staff. On other days, head to veggie-forward Cepa
where braised cabbage slaw with almond cream pairs beautifully with a glass of Otro Vino rosé from southern Brazil
Eventually, you’ll end up at Tan Tan—not to be confused with TonTon—a gastropub run by Thiago Bañares
an alum of the city’s pioneering temple to Brazilian gastronomy
Here he pairs approachable Asian fusion dishes
like pan-fried pork gyoza and roe-topped corn fritters
with genius-level tropical drinks like the vodka-based Old Passion
● ExímiaMark my words: This triplex cocktail emporium in Itaim Bibi will be Brazil’s next big phenomenon
All the drinks are batched in the third-floor cocktail lab
be it the rum-and-chardonnay-based Quebra-Queixo—a playful twist on a Brazilian street candy—or the Amarillys
vermouth and jabuticaba (the edible fruit of the Brazilian grape tree)
Sit on the first floor for a vibe that riffs off the Brazilian boteco with its signature white-checkered tile walls (many with patron’s Sharpie scribbles
signatures and well wishes) or on the second floor if you prefer a sultrier Amazonian theme
● Bar e Lanches EstadãoAfter a late night out downtown, sop up the booze at the open-all-night Estadão
with a sandwich so good Meg Ryan wouldn’t need to fake anything
Order the sanduíche de pernil tradicional—slow-cooked pork (no cheese)
significantly more delicious than anything I ate at the world-famous temple to pork
arguably the city’s most famous restaurant
● Time Travel Downtown Avenida Paulista, São Paulo’s most vital artery, is a broad boulevard of wonderfully retro-futuristic skyscrapers, largely erected in a 1950s post-war boom. But it didn’t start that way. Before World War II, the street was lined with rambling European and Arabesque mansions built by a legion of coffee barons. Casa de Rosas
has been turned into a museum and cultural center where lit displays on the ground floor provide a swift history lesson on the avenue’s history
Follow it up with an unobstructed bird’s-eye view of the modern-day concrete canyon at the Sesc Avenida Paulista next door
The 17th floor of this public-services building is accessible to all via timed tickets; check in at the second-floor lobby to get free admission
then return to the ground level to take the elevator to the top
● Entertainment Superhighway What started as a soaring strip of highway built to relieve congestion in the city center in the early 1970s is still a slow-moving
letting runners and yoga practitioners inhabit its 2 miles of snaking cement
then follow the down-sloping exit to Santa Cécilia
one of São Paulo’s most up-and-coming neighborhoods
● Beach Tennis, Sans BeachAmericans love pickleball, and Europeans have padel … Paulistanos have beach tennis—and who cares if they don’t have a real beach? They just cart sand in by the truck-full to create rectangular patches of peachy powder where finance bros (or “Faria Limers,” as they’re called here) can escape the trading floor. Arena BTG
is the rare spot where you can play without a CPF card (the local form of ID)
Its staff speak enough English that you can muddle through a really fun lesson (130 reais for one hour)
you can’t just slide in if you’re good at regular tennis: The rules are quite different because
a showroom selling patented reproductions of world-famous Brazilian furniture
You may even spot some pieces pulled straight from Zalszupin’s casa
Half-day guides to two walkable areas you should hit: one best seen in the morning
● Jardins This confluence of towering condos and chic boutiques around Rua Oscar Freire—São Paulo’s Rodeo Drive—is home to city’s ultra-rich
Easily São Paulo’s most walkable district by a mile (both figuratively and literally)
leafy Jardins is best in the late mornings when you can enjoy the city’s best padarias and primo people watching
If its Saturday, try feijoada at local institution Tordesilhas
salted meat by wandering a few blocks in any direction to delight in the quasi-aspirational names adorning the residential towers all around: Buckingham
Misci is the city’s hottest clothing and lifestyle brand
championing Brazil’s ethnic diversity (Misci is short for “miscegenation”); its muted
adobe-pink flagship recently received international attention when Oprah stopped in and bought several bambolê leather handbags
where the minimalist home goods are all inspired by nature
● Vila Madalena and SurroundsGrittier and more bohemian than Jardins
Vila Madalena is São Paulo’s other obvious walkable area that
might have you believing you’re exploring an up-and-coming neighborhood in Lisbon or Madrid
Vila Madalena—along with next-door Pinheiros—is very much on the map
and boasts some of the best bars and restaurants in the city
But there’s plenty to see before sunset as well
If you’ve never tried a slice of “Romeu e Julieta”—a truly delectable goiabada (guava preserve) cheesecake—this is the place to do it
As day turns to dusk, do as the locals and post up at a boteco—De Primera Botequim is great option with colorful tiled walls. Or try Vila Madalena’s ultimate hipster hangout, Santana Bar
which delivers modernist bourbon cocktails
If São Paulo’s quintessential taste is the deeply stewed feijoada
then its signature sound is the clacking of helicopter propellers above
It’s how the city’s elite shave serious time off of their commute—especially on weekends when they’re escaping to the countryside
West of the Big Smoke is Boa Vista, a luxury residential enclave built by Fasano parent company JHSF, complete with a fake beach, sprawling golf course, access to the Ipanema National Forest and, of course, a lavish Fasano hotel for guests
You can get there by chopper in 30 minutes
Book all of your helicopter needs with Revo
which charges from $450 per person for an airport transfer
One of the most compelling and functional social apparatuses in the world, SESC—Serviço Social do Comércio (pronounced “seskee” by Brazilians)—is a private
not-for-profit endeavor to support workers in the goods and services industry with all of life’s needs and pleasures—medical care
wellness facilities and a curriculum of arts activities
It’s been a particularly successful endeavor in São Paulo
are housed in gleaming architectural expressions
Much of their compelling programming and infrastructure (concerts
cafes—the list goes on) is also open to the general public
If you have time to check out one of SESCs while you’re in town, make it SESC Pompeia
a former factory that’s been converted into a community center—and wondrous brutalist masterpiece—by noted architect Lina Bo Bardi
you’ll feel the real pulse of the city as you take a coffee among gossiping twentysomethings
loiter on mid-mod furniture with a design magazine
watch gallerinas ogle the latest art exhibitions and pass locals going for their daily swim
for a detailed list of what’s on at all of the SESCs around the city

Two passengers were removed from the aircraft after the incident

An American Airlines flight descended into chaos when a female passenger was thrown to the floor by a flight attendant who thought she was trying to breach the flight deck
who was initially angry about the flight being delayed
I’ll kick you in the balls.” She was then bundled down a business-class aisle by airline staff as a male passenger stood and shouted at her
The shocking scene was filmed and shared on social media
with the clip garnering over 780,000 views
She screamed: “You son of a bitch – disgusting – you can’t touch me
You don’t know who you’re talking to – you’re going to get screwed
I went to ask why I was late and this f***** threw me out.”
Another flight attendant stopped to try and calm the other angry passenger
but both he and the woman at the centre of the commotion were reportedly removed from the flight
The astonishing incident took place on April 24 on flight AA950 from São Paulo to New York
the unnamed female passenger was confronted by flight attendants when she attempted to question a pilot about the delay as he exited the cockpit
As a consequence of the commotion, the flight was delayed even further as it had to return to the gate for the passengers to be removed.
The flight eventually took off two hours and 25 minutes later than its scheduled departure time, Aeroin reported.
In a statement, American Airlines said: “On Thursday, April 24, American Airlines flight 950, en route from São Paulo (GRU) to New York (JFK), returned to the gate before departure due to a security issue on board.
“The safety and security of our customers and team members is our top priority and we appreciate our customers’ understanding.”
The Independent has contacted American Airlines for further comment.
