Italy and France have already sent two water-bombing aircraft each after the Portuguese government on Monday requested help under the EU civil protection mechanism."We are in a stressful situation
at the limit of our capabilities," civil protection chief Duarte Costa told CNN Portugal
adding that the reinforcements would allow for some rotation of exhausted Portuguese firefighters and aircraft maintenance.Data from the European Forest Fire Information Service showed that large-scale blazes had burned an area of more than 90,000 hectares (347 square miles) since Saturday
making this year's total of at least 124,000 ha the widest burned area since 2017
when Portugal suffered two devastating wildfires that killed more than 100 people. After temperatures that had kept above 30 Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) since the weekend
officials expected cooler air to help with the firefighting effort in the coming days
but the meteorological situation in general remained unfavourable
civil protection commander Andre Fernandes told reporters. At least some of the dozens of fires across Portugal have been started by arsonists
and Prime Minister Luis Montenegro vowed to "spare no effort in repressive action" against such crimes.Police said in a statement they had arrested 12 people since Saturday suspected of arson in the districts of Aveiro

At the intersection of 6th and San Pedro Streets in Downtown, construction is in the home stretch of a high-rise affordable housing development from Related California and the Weingart Center Association
The project, which replaced a parking lot 600 San Pedro Street
consists of a 17-story building that will feature 302 apartments - including 298 units of permanent supportive housing
Plans also call for 2,800 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and a standalone 212-car parking structure
Large Architecture is designing the tower
Plans show an amenity deck is to be located above the adjoining parking garage
600 San Pedro is on track for completion in mid-2025
The project is the second Weingart Center towers to rise at the intersection of 6th and San Pedro, following a 19-story tower completed last year next to the organization's headquarters
A third building - a smaller 12-story structure with more than 100 supportive housing units - is also planned
Weingart and Related are also developing a second project farther west in Downtown. The proposed Alveare apartments would be a 335-unit affordable housing complex at 1405 S. Broadway

WBC Interim super-flyweight Champion Pedro Guevara
who is challenging Absolute Champion Jessie Bam Rodriguez on November 9th
to fulfil a dream ten years on from winning the World Boxing Council`s light flyweight crown
Pedro has built an impressive record of 42-4-1
Pedro is thirty five while Jessie is a youthful twenty four
To surmount and conquer the age difference
Pedro has been training like a hermit for almost three months at High Altitude in Jilotepec in The State of Mexico
He had done three weeks of training there in preparation for a fight scheduled for October 11th
but then this opportunity arrived and he`s determined to seize and capitalize upon it with both hands
he`s bolted on another two months of spartan training to be in the most superb tip top condition of his career
meticulously guided by his Coach Jose Adalberto Sanchez
Pedro is focused and looking forward to this awesome Mandatory Challenge
He said: ”My training now is at its peak and it is very exacting
but we are accustomed to work extra hard and so much more for this one
because it`s going to be a hard and tough fight
This is for the super-flyweight championship of the world
I`m lowering down my weight trimming nicely
to be totally ready and prepared for the fight on November 9th in Philadelphia
”I can`t count the amount of rounds I`ve already sparred
I`ve sparred so many rounds over so many days with different kind of southpaws
Pedro has carefully studied the fight in which Jessie stopped Juan Francisco Estrada with a crunching left to the body in round seven
He had already dropped Gallo in the fourth and then Gallo responded
Pedro says: ”It was an Estrada that I`ve never seen
I trust in his preparation and his experience
but Jessie Rodriguez upset all that work KO`ing Estrada
we ourselves are training for a fighter who looks very strong
we are in a great position and I`m fighting for the third time for the WBC world championship
It`s a great achievement for me and I`m going to take this opportunity
I want to be one of the best Pound for Pound fighters and winning this fight will make it possible.”
Pedro confided that Juan Manuel Marquez recently phoned him with some sage advice
boxing and fighting smart in a highly disciplined mode
focusing and concentrating every moment and instant throughout
Pedro has done extensive homework and strategy studies about Jessie
but he`s prudently keeping his cards close to his chest
I could talk so much more than I actually can
but I can tell you that I`m more hungry for this than anyone
but this really fires me up and I promise to you and all of my fans that I`m going to win
faith and thinking of my family during the long hours and during long tough days of training in Estado de Mexico
My baby daughter Gibrany Alejandra was born on October 15 and this will be a great gift for her.”

Discover the charms of Águas de São Pedro
the smallest town in São Paulo and the second smallest in Brazil
Just two hours from the bustling metropolis of São Paulo is Águas de São Pedro
The smallest municipality in the state and the second smallest in Brazil
it is the only Brazilian city designed and built with the purpose of being a hydro-mineral resort
On the official website of the Águas de São Pedro City Council
the city is defined as “different”
but rather the consequence of a modern and innovative project aimed at its implementation”
when it was emancipated from the then existing São Pedro
the history of the resort begins 28 years earlier
This is because Águas de São Pedro was born when its founder
discovered the medicinal properties of the mineral water springs in the region
Octavio Moura Andrade requested analyses of the mineral waters from USP’s Institute of Technological Research
The final results of these analyses were published in Boletim 26 in October 1940
Once the results of the first analyses of the quality of the waters had been confirmed
Moura Andrade began to buy the land needed to set up the new Águas de São Pedro resort
1,600 hectares were acquired for the construction of a new town near the site of the “Youth” spring
Today, Águas de São Pedro is one of the 11 municipalities in São Paulo considered to be hydro-mineral resorts.
Known for its thermal waters and medicinal properties, it attracts tourists in search of relaxation and well-being.
The town has modern spas offering a wide range of therapeutic treatments and leisure activities.
The Fonte da Juventude (Fountain of Youth) is home to the second highest water content in the world and the first in the Americas in terms of sulphur salts. Oral use or immersion baths are good for treating rheumatism, diabetes, allergies, asthma, colitis, skin diseases, intoxication and inflammation.
In addition, contact with nature is a constant in Águas de São Pedro. After all, the small town has beautiful parks and gardens that offer moments of contemplation and tranquillity.
The Dr. Octavio Moura Andrade Municipal Park, for example, is ideal for walks and picnics, as well as having a children’s play area.
Parque das Águas is a true natural refuge, with trails, lakes and a rich flora and fauna.
With a population of around 3,000, it’s a place where you can enjoy a more peaceful and welcoming pace of life.
So if you’re looking for a peaceful refuge, surrounded by natural beauty and with a cozy atmosphere, Águas de São Pedro is the perfect destination.
Located just two hours from the city of São Paulo, this charming little town offers a unique experience, where you can relax in the thermal waters, explore parks and gardens, enjoy the local cuisine and disconnect from the hectic pace of urban life.

© Carolina LacazThe exposed concrete floor and counter stand out, as well as the new environments, compartmentalized by walls covered in white tiles. With the exception of the monolithic counter that crosses one of the arches, all non-fixed furniture allows for layout flexibility, making the space capable of accommodating uses beyond the restaurant, such as museum events or private events.
© Carolina LacazIn addition to the functional aspect, the lighting was treated as an aerial element associated with the fixed counter that reinforces the connection and integration between spaces. The fixtures, with matte white acrylic pendant spheres, are striking elements in the project.
Floor planThe architects worked together with the museum's restoration team to understand the relevant elements present in the structures and restore them in a way that enhanced the original architecture, while also allowing for the creation of new uses and spaces. As for landscaping, the idea was to bring the outside gardens inside the space in a punctual way, without compromising layout flexibility.
© Carolina LacazThe main difference of this project is how the new architecture was able to promote a dialogue between eras, using simple yet efficient devices capable of establishing physical and poetic communication between spaces. The project makes it clear this overlapping of times and does not aim to mimic the new architecture to the existing one, making it clear to the viewer what is new and what is old, while also proposing a harmonious coexistence between the elements.

Quilombo São Pedro
wins definitive title to the collective territory
telegram Join our Telegram channel! telegram
The month of September 2022 entered the history of Quilombo São Pedro
After 34 years of the recognition of the quilombola right to the territory in the Constitution
the definitive collective title was registered in the name of the community association
Founded between 1825 and 1830 by Roza Machado and Bernardo Furquim
attempts at dams in the region for almost 200 years
and today it can finally celebrate the effective registration of the territory
which gives us a guarantee of our territory,” said Elvira Morato
a local leader who follows the quilombo demarcation process
The titling of collective territory became possible after the Federal Constitution of 1988 guaranteed this right to all Brazilian quilombola communities
quilombola titles intensified only after the enactment of Federal Decree nº 4887
Quilombo do São Pedro had already won partial title to the territory in 1998
after pressure from quilombola communities and lawsuits filed by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF)
Scientific identification of the territory of São Pedro
Governor Mário Covas issued the domain title for the 4.500 hectares of the territory in favor of the community
but the act could not be registered at a notary's office and assigned the community responsibility for negotiating the departure of non-quilombolas from the territory
it took more than 21 years of struggles for the State of São Paulo to remove the invaders from the community territory and overcome all the administrative bureaucracy to finally register that the territory belongs to the association
Registering the territory in a notary's office is an indispensable legal measure to guarantee the quilombola right
since it is through the notary registration that the law recognizes the domain and possession of land in Brazil
the 56 families in the community feel more secure
“The registration guarantees that the land really belongs to the community
the perpetuation of the culture and the passing on of traditions to future generations”
highlighted Professor Luiz Marcos de França Dias
current coordinator of the quilombola association São Pedro
The delay in registering this community is not an isolated case
as racism still makes it difficult to enforce a right provided for in the Constitution for 34 years
Of the 88 quilombola communities in São Paulo - according to Eaacone -
two are registered in a notary's office: Ivaporunduva and now São Pedro.
"We have other communities that are in the same situation
who have also been waiting for registration for 21 years
This achievement of São Pedro gives us hope for the progress of the process"
highlighted Rafaela Eduarda Miranda Santos
a quilombola from the Porto Velho community and a lawyer for Eaacone
title deeds issued by the State of São Paulo
despite being located on vacant public lands
after more than two decades the state still has not removed invaders and has not provided the necessary bureaucracy to register the titles of these communities with the registry office
it would take us around 1000 years to own all of our territories
from Quilombo Ivaporunduva and articulator of Eaacone
but it presents the reality of the slowness of the process.
In a calculation carried out by the organization Terra de Direitos
considering the slow pace and reduction of the budget for the titling of quilombola territories
which went from R$54 million in 2010 to R$3,4 million in 2019
it would take 1170 years to title all the quilombola territories of the country
Faced with this racist and unconstitutional slowness, Conaq announced, during the aquilombar
a letter to the presidential candidates in which he proposes the creation of a national plan for the titling of all the more than six thousand quilombola territories
the plan is a necessary measure for the right to be effectively respected within a reasonable period of time

Located in a valley area, the project takes advantage of the topography of the land to implement two building volumes connected by squares that in turn create areas for contemplation and leisure in the open. Access to the squares is easy and they are integrated to decks and environments for sociability furnished for ludic and creative activities. Partly in the shade of pergolas, partly open with trees, these open-air spaces have been conceived for total integration with the indoors.
© Ana MelloThe project’s highlight is the construction of a new Aquatic Park, rescuing and enriching the presence of the “water” element as a telling symbolic reference to the hotel’s history and its relationship with the town of Águas de São Pedro – São Paulo State. With its aquatic recreational equipment, it is a true water playground in a wide area, with pool, sheets of water and waterslide.
© Ana MelloPremises regarding sustainability, environmental preservation and ease of access are present in the work of Levisky Arquitetos | Estratégia Urbana, covering the process from the building stage to the time when spaces are put to use. It is a project concept that seeks efficient performance of the ensemble built in the long term, seeking better cost-benefit ratio, reduction of constant maintenance and equilibrium of economic, environmental, social and cultural issues.
© Ana MelloThe volumetry of the new ensemble built was conceived in line with the topography and is integrated into the surrounding landscape
taking into account the history of the land and the buildings
On revisiting it from the point of view of sustainability
what stands out is the choice of elements and building materials allowing rationality in the building site
avoiding waste and minimizing the quantity of leftover elements
preservation of existing adult vegetation and densification of green areas with new species integrate the landscape project
which in turn further strengthens the sustainable performance of the new ensemble. The project follows the guidelines of universal design and endeavors to facilitate orientation in spaces and the guests’ mobility at all stages of life

21 March 2018 – To maintain the health of the ocean ecosystems and protect the many species living within them
the Brazilian government has designated two new marine protected areas this week. The protected areas are home to a rich marine life
The designation increases the Brazilian marine protected areas from the current 1,5% to 24,5%
surpassing the target set by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
which recommends the protection of 10% of marine and coastal areas by 2020
made during the 8th World Water forum taking place in Brasilia until Friday
“This unprecedented initiative aiming at protecting almost one million square kilometers of extraordinary biological richness shows Brazil’s commitment to protect marine ecosystems and endangered unique species”
Solheim further congratulated Brazil for this decision
hoping it will resonate and inspire other countries to follow the same path
The new federal conservation units are located around two remote territories
The São Pedro and São Paulo archipelagos and the submarine volcanic chain that connects the Trindade island to the Martin Vaz archipelago are burgeoning with large numbers of pelagic fish – mainly yellowfin tuna
12 species of whales and dolphins, green turtles
UN Environment’s representative in Brazil, commented: “The oceans provide us food
and produce most of the oxygen in the air we breathe
The protection of these marine areas translates into ecological
and is one of the best options to maintain the health of our oceans”
The protected areas will be of mixed nature
Some areas will allow the development of regulated economic activities and others will be considered natural heritage
thus protected from any form of exploitation
both area’s will also play a strategic role in the delimitation and protection of the Brazilian territorial sea and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)
The areas will be co-administered by the Ministries of Environment and of Defense
which is considered as an innovative approach for protected areas
The Brazilian Navy played a historic and important role in the protection of these islands
UN Environment is the leading global voice on the environment
It provides leadership and encourages partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring
and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations
the civil society and with other UN entities and international organizations across the world.

Now that you've more or less got everything ready for New Year's Eve (or not)
it's time to choose the best places to watch the fireworks
but one detail is missing: where is the best place to watch the fireworks in Lisbon
The question seems easy to answer and you’re probably thinking of the highest places in the capital – after all, we live in the city of seven hills, don’t we
Now all that’s left to do is decide where you’re going to admire the fireworks and we’ ve got some valuable tips for that too
There are several popular places to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks in Lisbon
we’re going to list those where there will be the most crowds:
This is one of the most central places in the city
making it one of the places of choice where many go to see this great festival of explosions of color
Located on the eastern side of Lisbon, Parque das Nações is another popular place to watch the fireworks
This area of the city has several green spaces and many open areas where people can gather to watch the traditional fireworks
“fired” from two barges on the Tagus River
The fireworks display in Parque das Nações is expected to last the same amount of time as in Praça do Comércio
The Belém area is another good place to watch the fireworks
but only what’s happening on the opposite bank of the River Tagus
as no fireworks are planned for this part of the city
Even so, to watch in complete calm, the gardens of the Belém Tower seem to be the best place
you can watch the fireworks from one side of the Tagus River or the other
which makes the whole experience even more different
Some people prefer to watch the fireworks in less crowded areas
where the party is quieter but just as spectacular
In this case, we’re talking about the various viewpoints in Lisbon, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of this visual spectacle:
As its name suggests, this is one of Lisbon’s best-known viewpoints and is located in the Graça district
It offers a panoramic view of the city, including São Jorge Castle and Terreiro do Paço
It is undoubtedly an excellent place to watch the fireworks in the city center
As usual with viewpoints, it offers a panoramic view of the city, practically facing the Castle and downtown Lisbon.
The Miradouro da Nossa Senhora do Monte is one of our favorites and is also in the Graça district
Here you’ll be able to see the fireworks in the city center
near the Tagus and even the fireworks launched on the south bank
It’s undoubtedly one of the most incredible places to celebrate the New Year
it’s important to bear in mind that fireworks are very popular and these places tend to get quite crowded
we suggest you arrive early to get a good spot to watch the whole show
Brazil will soon have four vast marine protected areas (MPAs) in the Atlantic Ocean, covering an area of more than 920,000 square kilometers (355,200 square miles)
The new designation will increase the coverage of Brazilian MPAs from 1.5 percent to about 24.5 percent of the country’s waters
exceeding the international target of protecting at least 10 percent of marine areas by 2020
“This measure will help safeguard our rich biodiversity, and renew our commitment to a more sustainable world,” President Michel Temer said in a video address to the 2018 World Ocean Summit held in Mexico last week
Two of the MPAs will cover waters around the archipelago of Trindade
located more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) east of the Brazilian mainland
encompassing 402,377 square kilometers (155,359 square miles)
will allow some sustainable use of fishing resources
which will define what activities will be restricted and regulated
is currently being developed by the Ministry of Environment
vice president of media at Conservation International (CI)
covering 69,155 square kilometers (26,701 square miles) of the sea
The remaining two MPAs will be located around the São Pedro and São Paulo archipelagos
some 900 kilometers (560 miles) off the northeast coast
stretching across 407,052 square kilometers (157,164 square miles)
covering 42,498 square kilometers (16,409 square miles)
These remote archipelagos are home to a vast range of threatened and endemic species
including the critically endangered Atlantic goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara) and the endangered scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini)
The waters off the islands also hold a rich diversity of algae
Protecting the two archipelagos will be key to maintaining and recovering fish stocks, Cláudio C. Maretti, director of the Chico Mendes Institute, the administrative arm of the Brazilian Ministry of the Environment, wrote in a statement
“For the sustainability of food security
the entire world needs to make strong efforts in the recovery of fish stocks,” he said
McCloskey of CI told Mongabay that “the creation of these areas highlights Brazil’s commitment to meeting global environmental goals such as the Aichi Targets that stipulate member countries must establish at least 10% of marine and coastal areas as protected by 2020.”
“The designation also means that these remote areas will be protected from industrial fishing
mining and other detrimental activities,” McCloskey said
adding that Conservation International worked closely with the government of Brazil in establishing these protected areas
However, some marine biologists remain skeptical
are thinking about marine biodiversity conservation,” said Natalie Ban
a marine biologist at the University of Victoria
the Brazilian MPAs may do little to actually protect marine biodiversity
“They are placed in the most remote regions of the Brazilian EEZ [exclusive economic zone],” she said
“They cover the most remote seamounts
yet fishing is still allowed in the most sensitive areas around the islands or rocks.”
The designation is also unlikely to protect against deep-sea mining
“Such mining is unlikely to happen in this area because the average depth is around 5000m [16,400 feet]
deeper than the current viable deep sea mining operations,” she said
while I think steps to protect marine biodiversity are urgently needed
I fear that these MPAs are simply designed to meet Brazil’s Aichi target commitment without actually protecting threatened areas.”
Whether these remote MPAs succeed will depend largely on enforcement
“Because several coastal MPAs already struggle to be effectively implemented in developing countries
it is questionable whether governments will endeavour to protect these large MPAs in the open ocean
which are much more costly,” Ban said
The “fortress conservation” model is under pressure in East Africa
as protected areas become battlegrounds over history
and global efforts to halt biodiversity loss
Mongabay’s Special Issue goes beyond the region’s world-renowned safaris to examine how rural communities and governments are reckoning with conservation’s colonial origins
and trying to forge a path forward […]

Current ecological and evolutionary research are increasingly moving from species- to trait-based approaches because traits provide a stronger link to organism’s function and fitness
Trait databases covering a large number of species are becoming available
but such data remains scarce for certain groups
Amphibians are among the most diverse vertebrate groups on Earth
and constitute an abundant component of major terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems
They are also facing rapid population declines worldwide
which is likely to affect trait composition in local communities
thereby impacting ecosystem processes and services
a comprehensive database of natural history traits for amphibians worldwide
The database releases information on 17 traits related to ecology
morphology and reproduction features of amphibians
We compiled data from more than 1,500 literature sources
and for more than 6,500 species of all orders (Anura
This database has the potential to allow unprecedented large-scale analyses in ecology
data integration objective • database creation objective • species comparison design
Machine-accessible metadata file describing the reported data (ISA-Tab format)
it is urgent to improve our knowledge on amphibian traits in order to assess and predict their response to environmental changes and create conservation strategies that guarantee their survival
an extensive database containing natural history traits for 6,775 amphibian species globally
AmphiBIO releases information on error-checked and referenced traits related to ecology
Trait information was assembled from more than 1,500 literature sources
in order to stimulate more comprehensive research in ecology
we implemented a protocol in which incorporated data were double-checked for potential errors
By making this data available to the scientific community we aim to advance the sharing of biological data and support a more integrative trait-based evolutionary and ecological science
and previous data compilations by the authors
Future versions of AmphiBIO will include newly discovered species and taxonomic revisions following Amphibian Species of the World
AmphiBIO can be downloaded from Figshare repository record (Data Citation 1) under a CC-BY license
We do not use relative importance of trait categories as this information was absent in most literature searches; therefore we assume trait categories as equally important
any issue we considered important at the moment of data searching
such as discordances between current species name and the name in the literature record
We implemented three procedures to detect inconsistency in data entry before publishing the first version of this database
Data identified as outliers by any of the adopted validation procedures were flagged
checked for validity based on multiple literature sources
and either corrected or purged whenever necessary from the database
A total of 11,614 cells from our database were flagged and validated
We found an error rate of ~0.01% and no other errors after another 100 random data sample
AmphiBIO will undoubtedly benefit from further quality control and curation
We aim to facilitate this process by sharing through this archive online (see Usage Notes)
The data release is available from Figshare repository record (Data Citation 1) in a compressed (.zip) folder containing four files as described below

A Brazilian prison is making headlines because it introduces a "security goose" instead of an expensive "security dog."
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on the 6th that the Sao Pedro de Alcantara prison
located on the Uruguay border in southern Brazil
is enjoying various advantages by introducing nine "geose agents" as it converts existing guard dogs to guard geese
Guard geese make deafening noises if anyone tries to escape to defend the area between the prison's outer wall and the barbed wire inside
It is known that there are about 1,300 inmates in the prison
and it was too expensive to maintain," Marcos Souza
cost 7,000 dollars (about 9.5 million won) per dog
and high-end dog food and veterinary bills were always short of budget." On the other hand
but they don't get sick as often as guard dogs
The guard goose also provided another advantage to the Brazilian prison
guard dogs could buy through bribes such as steak
but guard geese are not loyal to those who feed them every day and are hostile
"The geese hate all humans and have no loyalty to those who feed them every day," said Souza
Humans have actually used geese for security work since ancient times
He is known to cry loudly when he sees strangers and have bright eyes at night
so he has been put more into watchman work than dogs
the Gauls invaded the Roman Capitol Hill and then attempted to launch a surprise attack at night
but the Roman army succeeded in repelling it when the geese raised in the temple of Hera (Juno)
"Feeding geese is the scariest thing," an inmate serving a 20-year prison sentence for murder and robbery told the WSJ
"When I went inside to fix the door in the past
all the guard geese approached me and attacked me."
When WSJ asked if the guard goose was delicious
