The feline’s appearance occurred “during the religious celebration at the Church of São Roque
in Funchal” and the “cat performed some acrobatics and provoked laughter from the faithful”
the priest explained that the cat belongs to the local school but has appeared in the Church at all the Masses of the Parto and also at the Midnight Mass”

The island of São Miguel is the largest in the Azorean archipelago—a cluster of Portuguese islands dotted in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean—but in all other ways it’s a small place
A short drive down the coast from the capital
with a streak of volcanic black sand at the sea front and alleyways between pastel-colored houses leading you up the hillside towards pastures full of miniature cows
There are a few tourists who’ve come to surf and bodyboard and a handful more locals
mostly unemployed youngsters hanging out on the bonnets of battered hatchback cars smoking weed
The Azorean fishing industry is centuries old
with the total catch declining by over half in the past five years
he’s hauled packages as an errand boy in a warehouse and served as a waiter in a port-side restaurant
We’re sitting at a table outside São Roque’s P3 café
There’s a bottle of Cruzcampo in front of me (the only beer anyone drinks on São Miguel) and a coffee in front of Diogo
and doesn’t tend to touch alcohol these days
“I only smoke weed and hash,” he says
We’re a few meters away from the house where he lives with his dad
which in turn is just a stone’s throw from his grandma’s house
and as young Azoreans wander in and out of the café they all greet Swift
pointing out a particularly wayward-looking teen
But he’s into some shit.” By “shit” he means heroin
In São Roque some of the boats have found another purpose
“They use the fish to hide the drugs,” Diogo explains
“real stuff–the streets.” It’s hard to imagine any turf wars breaking out on São Roque’s picture-postcard-pretty streets
though his English is good) do resonate with the locals
and Diogo explains to them—with some pride—that he’s doing an interview
A few thousand hits for the two-dozen songs on Swift Triiga’s YouTube channel might not seem like a lot
Soon he’ll be playing the biggest show of his life at the island’s one and only music festival
It was the death of his mother when he was 21 that really knocked Diogo off course
“I was playing PlayStation with my brother,” he remembers
‘My mum came up to say we needed some money
Twenty minutes later I heard my dog in the back yard
When I went to the kitchen I saw her through the window
She’d put a hosepipe around her neck and hanged herself.”
Diogo blamed the anti-depressants his mother was on for her death
which is why he refused to take them himself in the aftermath
“But my dad didn’t want his son to be a junkie.” Whether or not he makes it in the rap game
and with his dad coming to see his show tomorrow
he feels an infectious sense of nervous excitement

FALL RIVER – The Great Feast of the Holy Ghost of New England began Wednesday with more than 100 people praying the rosary at Kennedy Park and about 1,000 enjoying the traditional free meal of Holy Ghost soup and sweet bread
After a two-year forced hiatus due to the pandemic
“It’s very important to keep doing this
to keep this tradition alive,” said Stoughton resident Nelson Melo
“I would love to see the new generations giving continuity to this.”
local farmers originally donated calves to make the soup and bread to feed the poor
and the tradition of feeding others survived
Melo noted he has been visiting the feast for a number of years
but this was his first time at the soup event
Maybe it’s the Holy Spirit that makes it taste better,” he said with a smile
were sharing a bowl of soup with their families
“I so enjoy this; I grew up with this,” said Melo
“This was the best I’ve had,” quickly added her sister
The Great Feast began with a public recitation of the rosary in front of the “Império,” or small chapel that hosts the crown of the Holy Ghost
which memorializes Queen Isabel of Portugal
a Catholic saint renowned for feeding the poor in the 14th century
“I hope our youth are touched by the Holy Spirit and continue this faith
who immigrated to the United States from Mosteiros
“The Holy Spirit lives inside each one of us.”
The prayers were followed by the meal of soup and sweet bread

she cut up dozens upon dozens of loaves of bread and prepared huge quantities of collard greens
“We’ve been here today since 9 a.m.,” said the native of São Roque
who immigrated to the United States 33 years ago
“I am so happy and I feel so proud to be given this task
It’s wonderful to see the tradition continue
president of the Casa dos Açores da Nova Inglaterra
was among dozens of volunteers who helped serve the soup
“It’s extremely important to reactivate this tradition after the pandemic and pass it down to the future generations,” he said
the huge financial commitment it is necessary to put together an event of this magnitude
but I hope it comes back even stronger,” he said
Feast goers were treated to a special performance by the Folia of Capelas
a 10-member music group that came purposely from the Azores to bring messages of faith through songs inspired by the Holy Ghost
“We are thrilled to be here,” said Eduardo Pereira
“People have been very hospitable.”
Pereira said the Folia’s presence at the feast could only be possible with the generous support of the Carvalho family of Carvalho’s Landscaping Service Inc
“It was a dream come true,” he said
“If it weren’t for this family
Pereira said that singing for Azorean immigrants
“It gives us goose bumps,” he said
said the folia’s performance brought back fond memories from her childhood in São Pedro
“My aunt Natalia Medeiros used to sing these songs,” said Silva
who moved to the United States more than 40 year ago
Feast President Duarte Camara said he was very pleased with the turnout
“Everything is going well,” he said
“We have a lot of people helping us and I feel very grateful.”
Camara said he expects to have more people manning the booths this year in order to avoid long lines
“We want to serve people as best as we can,” he said
“We want everyone to be happy.”
The rest of the week the feast will feature several attractions
including the blessing of the Pensões (food offerings) by Father Jack Oliveira at 7 p.m

Text description provided by the architects. The project concerns the construction of a passage through two buildings leading to a square which lies eight meter below, leveled by one elevator, inside the staircase.
The passage works like an exhibition space, for paintings, sculptures and video arts. Conducts directly to the “Galleria Solar”, gallery which is specialized in cinematic art video and shortcut films. There is also a city bookshop. The original building was constructed in the sixteenth century, being deeply transformed in the eighteenth century. The refurbishment is done after the building was totally ruined.
SectionBeing the passage a public space, which is opened from 8:00 am until 12:00pm, the art is protected by glass panels which are provided with natural heating and ventilation. In the middle of the passage, we left some remains, testimony of the sixteenth century original building: a stone portico and some steps characteristic of this period.
© Fernando Guerra | FG+SGOn the first floor and in the attic, the space is converted into one student residence with eighteen bedrooms, kitchens and living spaces. Here, the strategy of the project is different. While on the ground floor, all the stone remain nude, without plaster and the floors are made of stone or cement, in the student residence, the space has been treated in terms of comfort: the floor was paved with wood and the walls were plastered and painted.
PlansThe common areas of the residence communicate with the gallery through pre-existing windows that provide transparencies and interaction between the gallery, the artworks and the common areas of the residence. The building also communicates with the city through windows placed specifically to frame the special views of the monuments of the sixteenth century.
© Fernando Guerra | FG+SGThe presence of the colored glass helps to make the transition between the historic manor house built in stone and the staircase constructed in pigmented concrete. Both materials went through unfinished treatments, evidencing the imperfection of the mankind. The space with the color glass illuminates the passage which incorporates a space for art exhibitions, introducing a section of cinematic gallery inside.
© Fernando Guerra | FG+SGBy this way, people meet art when walking through the city public spaces, being directly confronted and surprised by the regular exhibitions of the gallery. It combines the old with the new design, taking the atmosphere and ambience of gothic vitrals into contemporary architecture. The way that the luminous color panel is seen at the entrance of the building, attracts people to come and see the bright colors: the light at the end of the tunnel.
© Fernando Guerra | FG+SGThe Gallery was designed taking into account the principles of reuse of construction materials

So when in 1742 the “Portuguese Sun King” decided to build a chapel in honor of St
he asked for the best craftsmen in Europe to take part in the project
But instead of asking architects and sculptors to travel to Lisbon
King João ordered what is probably one of the first instances of “prefabricated” real estate projects in history
The Chapel of St. John the Baptist, located inside the Church of São Roque in central Lisbon, was in fact designed and constructed in Rome by Nicola Salvi, an Italian architect famous for designing the Trevi Fountain
the most prominent Italian engineer of the 18th century
the chapel was disassembled into separate components
shipped to Lisbon in three boats and re-assembled inside the Church of São Roque—a process that made it the most expensive chapel built in Europe at the time
Featuring lavishly ornamented floors in colored marble and columns with straight channeled shafts
the chapel introduced the “Roman Baroque” or “rococo” style—characterized by the rich use of ornaments and fluid curves—into Portugal
King João demanded the finest materials to be used for ornaments
The chapel interior decorations feature a panel made of three elaborately decorated mosaics: The Baptism of Christ
The intricate mosaics are made of tiny tessellae as little as 0.1 inches—all of which had to be taken apart and carefully placed back together under the supervision of Manuel Pereira de Sampaio
the process took so long that two of the panels
a Professor of Art History at Lisbon University
is offering the first comprehensive reconstruction of the entire process—commissioning
execution and delivery—that brought this ambitious architectural project to life
Together with her team of Portuguese and Italian co-authors
Vale explored the role of colonial taxes in the project’s financing
the recruiting of some of the most important artists and craftsmen of the era and some previously little known facts such as the role played by the sister of a Roman cardinal
who oversaw the entire production of embroidering for the project—a remarkable responsibility for a woman at the time
The authors also explore the personal meaning that the Chapel had for its commissioner
Part of what pushed King João to undertake such a colossal project was the desire to create an architectural symbol of the reconciliation with Pope Benedict XIV
with whom the ruler had a disagreement about the ordination of bishops of Lisbon some 20 years before
titled The Chapel of St John the Baptist in the Church of São Roque: The Commission

Drought in Barcelos (AM) brings to mind recent extreme events on the Rio Negro
telegram Join our Telegram channel! telegram
In the summer between 2015 and 2016 in the Barcelos region
the prolonged drought led to many forest fires
which spread across fields around the city and several communities
more than 14 thousand fires were recorded in the municipality
while in previous years this number did not reach 200
According to analyzes by the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA) – based on remote sensing data –
the fires devastated an area of 52.000 hectares of igapós
389.000 of campinaranas and 138.000 of terra firma forests in this municipality alone
This year, the weather conditions seem to be repeating themselves: the lack of rain started earlier
high atmospheric and river water temperatures
The Indigenous Environmental Management Agents (AIMAs) are present in five communities and in the municipality of Barcelos
and monitor management activities and environmental and climate indicators on a daily basis
This way we can see what the beginning of this summer was like
Pedro Raimundo Fernandes (63-year-old resident
hoping to make it summer so they can burn their fields
They intend to plant a lot of land so that next year they can have a good sale of flour and other products
São Roque was the most flour-producing community in this region
Today there was a difference: the day was hot
which gives the community hope for a good summer
the irapucas are already maturing their eggs
The irapucas have already started to celebrate their reproduction
The beaches along the riverbank are still several meters deep
Peacock bass also lodge in the bottom of the damiças to lay their eggs
This night it dropped by more than half a foot
promising a good açaí harvest for next year
A good summer is important for agricultural management in communities and for life cycles
allowing the burning of areas of forest or grassland open to new cultivars and the spawning of woodworms on beaches formed at low tide
bring more risks than benefits to life in the region
as we read in the continuation of Mr.'s diary
We can't last in the countryside - only until 10am
I finished clearing Mr Neco's field at 9:30am
the leaves of the plants begin to wither and only return to normal when it gets dark
AIMA Francisco Saldanha registered on 27/09
“This year I realized that the sun is very hot
too much; I also noticed that the river is drying up a lot
a workshop was held between Indigenous Environmental Management Agents (AIMAs)
a team from the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA) and leaders from the Indigenous Association of Barcelos (ASIBA) and the Coordination of the Indigenous Associations of the Middle and Lower Rio Negro (CAIMBRN /FOIRN) to precisely discuss the results of research on the impacts of the 2015 and 2016 fires on the economy of indigenous communities and the landscapes that experienced the fires
this group focused on better understanding that intense phenomenon and its consequences - talking to and interviewing residents and observing the environment in their daily management activities - agriculture
that first week of October followed more than a month of intense summer
with high temperatures and very little rain
which inspired comparisons between the current summer and that of years ago
There was also news of the first forest fires in the region
The drought in the Amazon is intense in 2023
leading to a sharp ebb in the rivers in the western portion of this river basin
with records of their lowest levels ever recorded in the Amazon and in several of its main tributaries
the level of the Rio Negro reached one meter below the 2010 record
until then the lowest in the series started in 1904
the ebb is already significant in the Rio Negro
passenger boats (recreational) stopped traveling up the river
leaving from Manaus to the cities of Rio Negro; Cargo-carrying boats and ferries were slowly rising
with frequent reports of boats running aground
This fact made navigation with greater draft
responsible for supplying riverside cities from Manaus
A problem already felt is fuel shortages and blackouts in São Gabriel da Cachoeira
as diesel is used to generate energy by local thermoelectric plants
Read also: Rio Negro is experiencing historic drought, and São Gabriel da Cachoeira is at risk of blackout
the sport fishing season started in September
which also serve as accommodation for fishermen
The severe drought in the Rio Negro in 2023 was already predicted due to El Niño
a phenomenon that leads to the warming of the waters of the Pacific Ocean near the equatorial coast of South America
changing the rainfall regime in several parts of the planet
The second week of October brought relief in Barcelos and the region due to intense rains
which alleviated the high temperatures and made the environment less flammable
the Rio Negro only rose again on the 17th and
began to leak again in the last week of October
The dry season in this region is generally more intense in the first months of the year
when the rivers reach their minimum levels
there have been many days without rain in September and October
raising doubts about what the coming months will be like

the city of Porto added a new site to its roster of art centres
The endeavour, a singular example of public and private collaboration, is an initiative set forth by the current owner of the premises, the Municipality of Porto, and collector Pedro Álvares Ribeiro – also known by the alias of Peter Meeker – who took on a two-year gut renovation via his foundation Vivercidade and was granted a 15 year lease to create the new art institution.
Of her vision for Casa São Roque, Piworwarska states that it is “a very specific art centre, linked inseparably to its historical building, the noble bourgeoisie’s house” – and that it will function as an “anti-white cube”, bringing forward the very character of the premises into the dialogue she will instigate by means of three main exhibitions yearly.
Ana Jotta, Inventória remains on view until March 8 2020.

“República” presents part of Luiz Roque‘s production
the exhibition will show six works on video
Roque is interested in science fiction as a means of reflecting on geopolitical
social and historical issues and to speculate on possible futures
Desire is an important vector of the artist’s production
His works have the duration and the rhythm of trailers or video clips and can be presented both at the art gallery or the movie theatre
Particularly interested in the legacy of modernism
Roque relates it to the body in movement and transformation and to pop culture’s imagery
using the cinematographic language to build narratives and visual essays in a suspended time
His characters inhabit post-apocalyptic and dystopian scenarios to where the artist brings elements from the history of art and architecture.
The work that lends the title to the exhibition was commissioned for the project in partnership with the Passerelle Center d’Art Contemporain
Roque explores the human body as a territory of disputes and political transformations
República is a kind of documentary captured on video and Super-8
narrated by the performer Marcinha do Corintho
The film is also a tribute to the central neighbourhood of São Paulo
The issue of sexual migration is at the core of the narrative and the circular visualization of the film
Roque addresses characteristic aspects of the “pharmacopornographic” society
The transgender feminist philosopher is one of the characters in the film that begins his trilogy: Ano Branco starts from a lecture by Preciado to build a fictional plot set in the year 2031

funchalNew Tunnelrelieve traffic
I’m curious as to the motive for such an enormous (and hugely expensive) civil construction project
Has the working population of the island (and specifically the Funchal area) grown so much that this is necessary
If it’s tourist related traffic contributing to increased traffic
encourage tour companies (and tourists in hire cars) to travel outside the traditional rush hour
I fear (without any proof of course) that this is just another project to keep the big construction companies busy…
“And it all makes work for the working man to do
Especially before elections should be distracted
Much more important would be the ferry to the mainland
You should only choose parties that guarantee the use of the ferry

Portugal is a secular state where the majority of the population defines itself as Catholic
and these churches in Lisbon are proof of that
The church is known for its beautiful architecture and richly decorated interior
a testimony to Portugal’s history and culture
It houses the graves of important historical figures
and although it is far from the main tourist routes
traditionally known as a “hall church”
One of the chapels is the Chapel of the Holy Martyrs
which was built in the 17th century to honor the martyrs of the Inquisition
Address: Largo Trindade Coelho (Chiado/Bairro Alto)
The church is known for its sumptuous interior
with gold and silver altars and statues of saints
Address: Largo de Santo António da Sé (Santa Maria Maior)
Address: Calçada do Menino de Deus (Santa Maria Maior)
Here you won’t find the traditional gold carvings
but traces of the fire that happened there in 1959
It’s this beauty – different – that makes it one of our favorites
Address: Rua da Madre de Deus 4 (Madre de Deus)
you’ll find a central body and two side bodies
as does the chancel with its baroque altar under a baldachin
Many of its details are gilded and it has a beautiful rococo ceiling
Address: Calçada do Combro (Santa Catarina)
The Church of Santa Engrácia was founded in 1568
only to be destroyed again in the 1755 earthquake
It wasn’t until 1916 that it was given the noble (and somewhat morbid) purpose of being the tomb of great Portuguese personalities
The Church of Our Lady of the Navigators has very futuristic features
with a circular architecture that is very different to what we are used to in these buildings
the work of architect José Maria Dias Coelho
who was inspired by Our Lady of the Navigators and the Oceans
which gave new life to this part of the city
Address: Passeio do Levante 6 (Parque das Nações)
The Tirupur-based Spoorthi Technologies has emerged a front-runner in the highly competitive textile printing field
a leading Portuguese garment printing machinery manufacturer
In an exclusive chat at the company’s booth at Knit Show 2015 held recently at Tirupur
We are distributors for the Portugal-based S.Roque
We have been distributing their automated garment printing machinery for the last five year now
The company is the exclusive distributor of S.Roque machines throughout India and has in the last five years installed around 300 machines
with 285 of these installations being in Tirupur and the rest in places like Ludhiana
Talking about the huge market potential for automatic textile printing machinery
Ganduri pointed out: “The market has picked up over the last 2-3 years
Gradually the manual machines are being replaced for various reasons such as labour problems
Exporters also want to bring down rejection rates
They have found that these machines help them tackle all these issues successfully
I feel that the market potential of India is 5000 machines per annum.”
Ganduri said: “It is a 33-year-old company
considered an industry leader in automatic textile printing machinery
the company also have significant presence in markets such as Vietnam
high technology and user-friendliness give the company machines a competitive edge over others
There is no need for a skilled operator to run the machines
Even an operator running a manual machine can be easily trained to operate these automatic printing machines
The other advantages that these machines include usage of smaller frames instead of big frames
Added to this is the 24X7 after-sales support
Spoorthi Technologies has an 18-member team
16 of whom are technicians and the rest for marketing
The company has a sub-distributor in Ludhiana
The company also manufactures waste water treatment plants for the printing industry
It has been manufacturing these plants for the last six months and has already completed 12 installations successfully
The ‘Ventil Aqua’ waste water treatment plants are meant for all types of printing and not only for textile printing
The company has plans to expand the product range
Ganduri further said: “This compact machine works on the chemical coagulation concept
Only minimal labour is required to operate this machine
These are factors that make it ideal for the entire printing industry.”
Throwing light on another machine that Spoorthi Technologies has launched recently
Ganduri observed: “We have also launched an automatic dispenser for printing
We have already successfully completed our first installation in Tirupur
We are importing the machine from Golden Colors
a software for the printing industry is in the preliminary stage of development
He is also confident about the continued growth of the Tirupur market when he said: “The resilience of the Tirupur market is amazing
In the last 6 years I have been here the entrepreneurs have faced a lot of problems such as power cut
Surprisingly the industry here has never slipped even one bit
Year-on-year exports have only been growing
It is a tribute to the hardworking nature of the entrepreneurs here
People here have realized the importance of latest technologies
They are investing into modernizing their units
There have been instances when after 6 months to 1 year of installation; people have come back to us wanting more machines
I know of units where 6 to even 10 machines have been installed.”
