The ultra-exclusive San Vicente opened on Friday in the West Village at 115 Jane Street at West Street, next door to what was formerly legendary party spot of the early aughts, the Jane Hotel (at 113 Jane Street)
The debut marks a New York peak members club moment
San Vincente arrives by way of Los Angeles and it's where Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been said to hide out
This one, just like other Manhattan clubs — including Jean-Georges’s Chez Margaux; London import the Twenty Two; ZZ’s from Carbone; Tao’s Crane Club

Unlike ZZ’s which reaches $20,000 to $30,000 for their club’s initiation
the initiation fees at San Vicente range from $3,000 to $15,000
while annual dues ring in between $1,800 and $4,200
Chef Nicholas Ugliarolo runs the San Vicente kitchen, which funnels food to the ground floor restaurant and the roof restaurant — though food is served throughout the building, in the drawing room, the billiards room, and the disco, too. Identifying vulnerable marine habitats is fundamental to promote evidence-based management and a sustainable use of our oceans
Although progress in the mapping of marine benthic habitats has been made
complex ecosystems such as submarine canyons remain largely unexplored
hampering evidence-based management from taking place in these ubiquitous features worldwide
Data from a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) survey in the upper São Vicente Submarine Canyon in southwestern Portugal from 2011
was analysed to carry out a comprehensive assessment of megabenthic habitats
particularly those of conservation concern occuring between 90 and 560 m
Underwater videos from three exploratory dives
were analyzed through multivariate and visual assessments
and the identified habitats were assessed against a set of criteria derived from current definitions of priority habitats
Thirteen potential priority habitats were characterized
out of which four distinct “coral gardens” and one “deep-sea sponge aggregation” are aligned with OSPAR definitions of priority habitats
and one corresponds to the habitat of a strictly protected sea urchin listed in the Habitats Directive
Three circalittoral sponge aggregations were also suggested based on the abundance of indicator species
The specific composition and diversity of priority habitats as described here
has not yet been described in any other canyon in the NE Atlantic region
Depth was revealed to be particularly important for the distribution of habitats
The approach presented in this study contributes to improve the understanding about submarine canyons
which is paramount to implement knowledge-based protection measures
it can be used to support future mapping efforts of deep-sea environments such as submarine canyons
suggesting these ecosystems are also important for top predators
Priority habitats which have so far been reported to occur in submarine canyons include coral gardens
Lophelia pertusa reefs and sea-pen and burrowing megafauna communities; the first three being listed as threatened/declining in OSPAR region IV (Agreement 2008-6)
This highlights the need for habitat descriptions to support evidence-based management in the region
quantitative studies are necessary for monitoring the status and impacts of anthropogenic activity
regardless of the protective measures taken
The benthic assemblages of the São Vicente Canyon (SVC) off southwestern Portugal remained unexplored until an exploratory ROV survey took place in 2011, conducted by OCEANA in collaboration with CCMAR/MeshAtlantic (OCEANA, 2011)
The present study aims to (1) identify all the megabenthic assemblages observed during the survey in 2011 that are listed as priority habitats by international conventions
or that potentially merit protection due to their suggested valuable ecosystem functions; (2) give a complete quantitative and qualitative characterization of these priority habitats; (3) explore the environmental variables influencing the distribution of priority habitats in the São Vicente Canyon
The location of the study area at the head of the São Vicente Submarine Canyon in the southwest of Portugal
The large map shows the location of the three transects located around the head of the canyon (SVC1
The map in the right corner shows the location on the Iberian Atlantic coast
Bathymetry lines are drawn for every 200 m; data was obtained from EMODnet Bathymetry
and was used to convert linear species densities to densities per m2 in this study
Sections with loss of bottom-view due to ROV maneuvres were considered off-bottom events and were excluded from the analysis and the total lengths of the transects
Navigation data was recorded with an Ultra Short BaseLine (USBL) system (Linkquest TN1510AH with an accuracy of up to 0.25°) and was post-processed and smoothed with a moving average
For the study of the benthic assemblages, and to have comparable units, transects were divided into 10 m long samples (after annotations were completed), following Bullimore et al. (2013)
Samples in which a change of substratum type was recorded
that contained off-bottom events or that were < 10 m
Only megabenthic invertebrate species were considered in the community analysis
Each sample was therefore characterized by substratum type
the megabenthic invertebrate fauna and the corresponding coordinates
Samples with more than one relief or depth class received merged classifications (e.g.
With the aim of assigning the resulting assemblages to “priority habitats,” as defined by the literature
agreements and guidelines provided by the OSPAR
assemblages were evaluated based on their characteristics
and grouped when representing similar priority habitats
To identify qualifying assemblages and to scale up to the “habitats” level
assemblages were assessed against the following set of criteria (i–v):
(i) At least one of the dominant and characteristic species of the assemblage must be recognized as a habitat-forming, vulnerable or protected species, and should preferably fit within any of the taxonomic groups listed as characteristic of priority habitats by OSPAR, FAO (Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem [VME] indicator species) or the EU Habitats Directive (OSPAR Agreement 2008-7; Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), 2016; Council Directive 92/43/EEC)
These species (hereafter “priority/indicator species”) must also have a high Sim/SD ratio
(ii) If an assemblage consists of samples with a single species occurrence and these samples do not appear consecutively
it is not considered a meaningful assemblage in this study
Assemblages that met the first two criteria were considered assemblages of potential conservation concern and were considered in the further inspection (following criteria)
(iii) Occurrences or assemblages that clearly present dense prominent megafauna despite failing the first criterion
or that are only represented by a single sample
but their conservation concern is to be evaluated individually
(iv) Assemblages that present similar habitat-forming indicator species and very similar traits are to be grouped into priority habitat types
facilitating interpretation and policy application (e.g.
(v) As OSPAR defines that the minimum extent of priority habitats should be of at least 25 m2
a habitat (defined in iv) has to occur at least once in two consecutive [10 m] samples under video inspection (covering an estimated area of 35 m2) to qualify for the priority habitat designation
Habitats that were below this threshold but passed the other criteria
For the identification of “coral gardens” (OSPAR Agreement 2008-7), the threshold value of 0.1 individuals per m2 applied by Bullimore et al. (2013)
A characterization including species composition, densities and depth distribution was given for each of the habitat-forming assemblages, and brief qualitative descriptions of the communities and their environmental conditions were given at the broader habitat level. QGIS (QGIS Development Team, 2019) was used to map the distribution of the habitats and the recorded environmental variables along with the transects
Summary of the three remotely operated vehicle (ROV) recorded transects in São Vicente Canyon
depth class and bottom type (substratum) categories in the surveyed area of the São Vicente Canyon
Most of the dismissed assemblages were excluded based on failing the second criterion
as they were represented by very sparse and singular occurrences of species and did not correspond to relevant assemblages at the scale of this study

The 25 assemblages of potential conservation concern resulting from the first two criteria
are indicated with labels and a color code corresponding to the habitat to which they were assigned
Excluded assemblages are labeled “x” and were rejected based on failing criteria (i) and (ii) (dashed lines) or not resulting in significant assemblages according to SIMPROF (solid lines)

identified as containing features of potential conservation interest
From left to right and top to bottom: (A) Small yellow sponge aggregation; (B) Laminar sponge aggregation; (C) Asconema setubalense aggregation; (D) Artemisina transiens aggregation; (E) Geodia megastrella patches; (F) Black coral garden; (G) Mixed anthozoan and encrusting sponge communities; (H) Gorgonian gardens; (I) Cup coral field; (J) Sea pen field; (K) Mixed gorgonian and sponge gardens; (L) Crinoid beds; (M) Centrostephanus longispinus habitat
Images obtained from the surveys conducted by OCEANA in collaboration with CCMAR/MeshAtlantic
Since samples were clustered based on species composition
relief and depth) of samples within an assemblage could vary
their typical associated environmental variables
At least three of the coral characterized habitats matched the OSPAR definition of “coral gardens” (black coral garden
mixed anthozoan and encrusting sponge community and gorgonian gardens); four if also counting the “mixed gorgonian and sponge gardens.” The four “coral gardens” occurred on circalittoral rock of varying relief
and together they occupied 17.6% of the total surveyed area
The “black coral gardens” occurred on rocky bottoms of moderate to high reliefs and were dominated by the black coral Antipathella subpinnata, which formed dense and particularly large three-dimensional structures resembling forests, often obscuring the abundant encrusting fauna living on the rocky substratum below (Figure 4F)
The “gorgonian gardens” were characterized by smaller gorgonians, identified as Bebryce mollis and Eunicella sp., and were most often recorded on flat to low relief rocky substratum covered by sediment veneer. Bebryce mollis often formed relatively dense aggregations within these habitats, while Eunicella sp. occurred more sparsely (Figure 4H)
The “mixed gorgonian and sponge gardens” were characterized and dominated by a combination of gorgonian and yellow erect sponge species, and were found mostly on low to moderate relief rocky substratum. The abundance of large, branched gorgonians identified as Paramuricea sp. varied within the habitat, and some areas presented more scattered colonies of lesser branched gorgonians and were co-dominated by echinoderms (Figure 4K)
The “sea pen field” was characterized by scattered and sparse occurrences of the sea pen Protoptilum carpenterii, and occurred solely on flat muddy substrata, most frequently between 430–560 m (with one exception at 200 m depth). The habitat is on the list of OSPAR priority habitats but failed the minimum extent criterion in this study, due to the very sparse occurrences (Figure 4J)
Five distinct sponge dominated habitats were identified
where one met the definition of the OSPAR priority habitat “deep-sea sponge aggregations” (Asconema setubalense aggregation)
another deep-sea aggregation failed the minimum extension criterion (Geodia megastrella patches) and three habitats corresponded to circalittoral sponge aggregations and met all the criteria (small yellow sponge aggregation
laminar sponge aggregation and Artemisina transiens aggregation; <200 m depth
not considered deep-sea sponge aggregations)
the five sponge habitats covered 27.6% of the total surveyed area
The Asconema setubalense aggregation was characterized and dominated by the conspicuous and structure-forming hexactinellid sponge Asconema setubalense. It typically occurred on rocky substrata of some relief, ranging from low to high. The substratum was often covered by sediment veneer, and the habitat frequently hosted various species of crustaceans, echinoderms and fish (Figure 4C)
Although the second candidate for this priority habitat designation, the “Geodia megastrella patches,” failed on the minimum extent criterion, sightings of this priority species were relatively common in the deep-sea of the SVC. The habitat was mostly recorded on slightly exposed bathyal rocky outcrops, but also in muddy substrata, and often in association with other species such as ophiuroids and crustaceans (Figure 4E)
aggregations of the oyster Neopycnodonte cochlear also occurred within this habitat
The “laminar sponge aggregation” typically occurred near the aforementioned habitat, although it was dominated by regular occurrences of the laminar sponge Phakellia robusta, as well as some other relatively large, structure-forming unidentified sponge species, rather than the small-sized yellow sponges characteristic of the previous habitat (Figure 4B)
The Artemisina transiens aggregation was uniformly characterized by a single conspicuous sponge species, identified as Artemisina transiens, and clearly delimited to one specific area. The monotypic habitat occurred on flat rocky substrata covered with sediment veneer and presented high densities in its core area (5.4 ind. per m2), with only a few contributions of other taxa such as Phakellia robusta and anthozoans (Table 2)
The inclusion of this habitat was based on the third criterion (a single sample of a priority habitat)
Assemblages dominated by this species were found on rocky substrata of all classes of relief and on top of an abandoned fishing net
Included in the figures below are the distribution maps of the habitats along the three transects (Figure 5) and a representation of their vertical depth distribution (Figure 6)
Habitat distribution maps of the 13 potential priority habitats
representing the 25 assemblages (IDs in parenthesis) within each study transect (SVC1
Habitats are mapped with different colors as specified in the legend

Vicente submarine canyon (Jittered points represent occurrences)
Habitats with two or less data points are represented only by points (occurrences)
The DistLM marginal tests revealed that substratum type
depth and relief were all significant factors that influence the species composition of habitats (p < 0.001)
marginal tests revealed that depth explained the greatest part of the variance
while relief and substratum explained 7.3 and 6.8%
the three environmental variables explained only 25.5% of the variation in the species data (adjusted-R2 = 0.237)
depth continued explaining the greatest part of the variance (13.2%)
Substratum added only 4.9% to the explained variation
once depth and relief had been fitted in the model
This underlines the importance of managing bottom-tending practices in areas where vulnerable species occur
mostly supported by the findings in this study
In shallower muddy substrata of the SVC (100–120 m) Spinimuricea atlantica was also observed on several occasions
Altogether, similar coral habitats to those reported here, have previously been described in other areas in the Atlantic-Mediterranean region, revealing the influence from Mediterranean outflow waters (Baringer and Price, 1997)
the specific composition and diversity of coral habitats characterized here has not yet been described in any other canyon in the NE Atlantic region
no match in literature could be found for the mixed habitats that were detected
characterized by a combination of yellow erect sponges and gorgonians such as Paramuricea sp.
suggesting that the canyon may also host unique assemblages
possibly due to a mix of biogeographic influences and complex hydrodynamics
The patchy habitat characterized and dominated by the deep-sea sponge Geodia megastrella did not qualify as a priority habitat due to the minimum extent criterion established by OSPAR. Yet, the habitats shaped by G. megastrella in the SVC often seemed to host other megabenthic species, and several species in the Geodia genus are listed as representative VME taxa of both soft- and hard-bottom sponge aggregations (ICES, 2019)
although the presence of the dominant yellow erect and stipitate sponges was not mentioned there
The communities reported in those regions are more similar to the laminar sponge aggregations observed in the SVC
it could also be classified as a “deep-sea sponge aggregation.”
Our findings could possibly indicate an extension of its bathymetric range in the SVC
endorsing their potential conservation interest in the SVC
12 habitats characterized by a wide range of priority species and ecosystem engineers have been identified and described in this study of the São Vicente Canyon
all of which are highly sensitive to the impacts of bottom-fishing activities
and some are also threatened by changes in sedimentation regimes which can follow trawling on the canyon flanks
Although an assessment of the fishing effort in the area is currently not available
the study area is located in a highly productive and intensively fished region
Comparisons with other canyons in the Atlantic-Mediterranean region suggest that a noteworthy diversity of potential priority habitats
The 12 potential priority habitats characterized and dominated by corals and sponges accounted for 54.1% of the surveyed area (3,865 m2)
They occurred on a variety of substratum types
suggesting that their overall distribution area in the canyon may moreover be of substantial size
A widespread habitat dominated by crinoids was also identified in the deeper sections of the canyon
Several international agreements and instruments are calling for the protection of the recorded priority habitats (e.g.
The establishment of a SVC Marine Protected Area that accounts for the high diversity and patchy distribution of priority habitats should promptly be discussed
and the effects of sediment resuspension considered in the design
this study provides support in understanding the drivers determining habitat distribution in submarine canyons
which is paramount to improve the mapping of this kind of environments through predictive habitat modeling

Barnes earns his maiden win at Churchill Downs
Barnes will take a step toward seeing whether he can return to Churchill on the first Saturday in May
KING: Barnes Delivers in Baffert's Return to Churchill Downs
Go back into the entire history of the race
and you'll find San Vicente/Derby double winners Majestic Prince in 1969
Barnes gets the services of Juan Hernandez from post 2
"He had every reason to get beat that day," Baffert said of Barnes
"And 5 1/2 furlongs is probably a little short for him
He shipped (to Churchill Downs) and handled everything well
He was in a bad post and got jostled around a little bit ..
We'll see how he handles the next step."
Baffert has named Mike Smith to ride from post 3
McKinzie Street has the most experience in the San Vicente field
Though he has only won once in four starts
he finished second in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and third in the American Pharoah Stakes (G1)

and each will receive his share of backers
"He's one of my favorite sires," Baffert said
everybody started breeding these really good mares to him."
Barnes is making his first attempt around two turns in the 1 1/16-mile San Felipe, which offers qualifying points on a 50-25-15-10-5 scale to the top five finishers as part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby. He debuted last November at Churchill Downs
winning a 5 1/2-furlong maiden race by a head
Then he powered home by 5 1/2 lengths in the seven-furlong San Vicente Stakes (G2) Jan
"You always think that he can do it (win around two turns)
but he's got to (actually) do it," Baffert said
will get the services of Santa Anita's current leading rider Juan Hernandez
McCarthy trains Journalism for an ownership group headed by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners. The colt hasn't started since the Los Alamitos Futurity. Aron Wellman, president and founder of Eclipse, told Louie Rabaut and Sean Collins on their "BloodHorse Monday" podcast that the colt "got a little sick on us as a result of a vaccination."
Wellman said the setback may have been "a blessing in disguise because it allowed us to take a step back
get him back refreshed and rejuvenated for what we hope is going to be a big-time sophomore campaign."
That campaign is slated to begin in the San Felipe
"Rodriguez sort of got stuck between horses and had to take up a little bit
and then he came back and ran well," Baffert said of the Lewis

The newly reduced evacuation zone in Santa Monica
Residents evacuated from the area between Montana and San Vicente were allowed to return home on Friday but those living north of San Vicente are still under an evacuation order
10 there is a mandatory evacuation ORDER for all areas of the city north of San Vicente Boulevard
There is an evacuation warning for all areas of the city north of Montana Avenue to San Vicente Boulevard
A warning for areas of the city between Wilshire and Montana has been lifted entirely
For residents who were previously under evacuation order (between Montana and San Vicente) this area is now entirely under an evacuation warning
Residents may voluntarily return to this area but remain prepared with gathered essentials and be ready to leave the area if conditions worsen
The Los Angeles County Curfew order remains in place in all evacuation warning zones in Santa Monica
SMPD will be enforcing the County curfew order from 6 p.m
No enforcement action will be taken against residents trying to repopulate the evacuated areas
Residents are asked to work with officers and members of the National Guard by carrying current identification and minimizing trips in and out of the evacuation warning areas
SMPD said it needs to continue its heightened stance addressing opportunistic criminal behavior
If you see anything suspicious or disturbing
contact 911 (life-threatening emergencies) or 310-458-8491
Officials said that while conditions are favorable for this change to evacuation zones
the fires across the region are dynamic and can change quickly
Residents are encouraged to sign up for SM Alerts for important safety information and follow the city on Facebook, X or Instagram for regular updates
Call 911 to report down power lines or immediate threats to life or property.
also applies to a small amount of LADWP customers north of San Vincente Boulevard on Woodacres Road
This area was previously under mandatory evacuation orders and is now under a voluntary evacuation warning
Water quality elsewhere in the city is not impacted.
“We ask residents for their patience with returning home,” Mayor Lana Negrete said
“Please be kind to first responders and staff at entry points
We understand that there is immense stress in having to leave under such conditions and we thank everyone for their cooperation as we continue to assess conditions and begin recovery efforts.”

you will have many long evenings ahead of you
This 'city' is considered the cultural Hotspot of Cape Verde
spirits and a vibe that will make you feel right at home
Don't expect crowded tourist bars or polished happy hours
good music and the relaxed Cape Verdean planning (read: everything starts an hour later than planned as standard)
La Pergola is one of those places that everyone recommends - and for good reason
The location combines indoors and outdoors
with a concrete space that is partly covered
Start your evening here with a grogue sour – the local pride – and relax before the night really starts
bluesy music style with sultry guitar sounds
a singer with a voice full of feeling and lyrics that touch you – even if you don't speak the language – right in the heart
In short: difficult not to get in the right mood here
Bombu Minino is old school – and that's exactly why it's so great
but you can count on discovering new names that will immediately pop into your playlist
The atmosphere feels like a messy living room
where friends play your favorite records and time seems to stand still
Super friendly and speak good English – a welcome change
If you are looking for a place where music is not only heard but also performed gevoeld
then you should definitely visit Jazzy Bird Bar Pub
One of the oldest bars in Mindelo and a household name in the Cape Verdean music scene
Many big names – local and international – have stood on the stage here
On Wednesdays and Fridays the energy really flows through the space: locals gather
Fancy a place where you can look out over the bay
Sunset is the rooftop bar where locals and travelers come together for good beats
delicious food and that golden glow of the setting sun
Behind the bar they shake fresh cocktails – and they are really finger-licking good
There is a DJ regularly and the atmosphere is always laidback
Heads up: on Saturdays you can easily end up between balloons and children's cake
Sunset is a popular spot for birthday parties on the weekends
But let's be honest: even then the view is great
The interior is industrial – lots of metal
artistic details – and the crowd is a mix of locals and travelers who know how to build a good evening
You stick around for strong cocktails and conversations that only get better as the evening progresses
A little tip: leave your Dutch punctuality at home
you might as well not be there until 22:30
and around midnight the Mindelenses are dancing in the street or in the bar
That's how it goes here - and that's what makes it so good
The São Vicente Agricultural and Craft Market was temporarily transferred to the town park

MENUFROM THE MAGAZINEHow Gabé Doppelt Went From Fashion Glossies to L.A.’s Ultimate GatekeeperNow
You were a high-profile magazine editor for several decades, working at titles like Vogue and Mademoiselle, not to mention W. Seven years ago, you surprised everyone by ditching publishing to take a job as maître d’–in-training at Tower Bar, in Los Angeles, replacing the veteran Dimitri Dimitrov.
I was freelancing and running out of money! The timing was perfect, because Jeff Klein had just bought the San Vicente Bungalows and was thinking about what to do with Tower Bar.
Did you get snarky comments from your former colleagues when they first saw you at the hostess podium?
Recently, Jeff promoted you to global membership director at San Vicente Bungalows in L.A. And this fall, you’re moving to New York to oversee the opening of the new Manhattan outpost. Will this job turn you into the world’s snootiest gatekeeper?
Someone I respect tremendously said to me, “Don’t be afraid to be a cunt—you have to be!” But I try not to be too cunty. My job is to curate the membership mix to make sure that it’s diverse, including across age groups and industries. There must be a fair amount of thought and compassion that goes into the decision-making process.
Do you and Jeff always agree on who should be allowed in?
Not always! We also have a membership committee, and we trust them and don’t like to overrule them. The meetings are loud and raucous and opinionated, but ultimately we reach a consensus.
The club is known for being extremely strict about secrecy: Members can’t take photos at the club or post about it on social media. I’ve heard that a few members have gotten themselves suspended. What were their misdeeds?
Breaking the no-photos rule is the most common offense. There just has to be a selfie-free zone somewhere in the world. But people often sneak pictures and post them—and somehow Jeff always finds them, even if the account is private. Also, when a member is rude to staff, that’s gross and says a lot about that person. Insecure? Micro-penis?
When a member gets kicked out, are you the one who bounces them?
Yes, and I enjoy it tremendously. The first time I suspended someone, I was terrified, but then it only took about two or three more, and now I get such joy out of it. In a normal restaurant, you don’t always have the power to get rid of someone. It does keep people in line.
Which types of members are the biggest divas? You have many of the top movie stars, studio heads, tech moguls, and fashion designers.
Strangely, it’s the average people who act the most entitled. I’ve found that, at the club, the big stars just want to be treated like real people. They want to blend in because they draw so much attention everywhere else.
How will the membership mix in New York be different from L.A.?
It will be heavily fashion, with a big presence from the art world, and, personally, I want as many writers as possible. As with our first club in L.A., we’re letting in only a couple hundred to start. We’re being incredibly selective. All new members have to be nominated by existing members. Some people are applying for L.A. memberships so that they can get into New York through the back door.
What kinds of desperate measures do people resort to while trying to make their applications stand out?
Oh, appalling things. Some people will include a picture of themselves on their Peloton in their private jet. But money is not going to buy your way in. Just showing that you go to fancy restaurants in Europe all summer and have six houses and collect private clubs for a hobby, that’s not appealing to us.
Which members or guests can still make you starstruck?
You joke about the challenges of being a 64-year-old in a job that requires late nights and long hours walking around in heels. But in what ways are your age and wisdom an advantage?
The more rings around the trunk, the better equipped you are to handle basically anything. My skin is thick now. If I were younger, I think I’d be offended much more easily, but now everything just rolls off my back. I handle it like the elderly person that I am.

Two passers-by injured by debris of plane that hit bus
I would like to be emailed about offers, events and updates from The Independent. Read our Privacy notice
A bus burst into flames and two people were killed when a small plane crashed on a busy road in Sao Paulo
Six people were injured by the debris after the eight-seater plane crashed on Marques de Sao Vicente Avenue in Brazil’s largest city
Witnesses recalled seeing the plane exploding in a fireball as it hit the back of the bus, just yards from a queue of cars at a crossroads.
“I just saw everything flying and the fireball
The plane was ripping up palm trees and signs,” Genival Dantas Arraes said
Dramatic footage showed the blaze on the bus and a large plume of black smoke rising over Sao Paulo as emergency crews rushed to the scene
Sao Paulo governor Tarcisio de Freitas said the two people killed were pilot Gustavo Medeiros and the plane’s owner, Marcio Carpena.
A passing motorcyclist was among the injured after he was hit by debris from the plane
A woman who was inside the bus was taken to hospital for her injuries
The condition of the two wounded people was unknown
The four other injured people had only minor injuries
The control tower lost contact with the plane minutes later
One witness reported seeing it hit a tree before petrol began gushing out of it
hit the sign and started dumping kerosene,” engineer João Lucas da Silva Amaral said
Personal trainer Adriano Rolim told Globo: “The pilot tried to land on Marques de São Vicente
but the plane hit the back of the bus and ended up exploding
The Brazilian Air Force said it would investigate the accident as quickly as possible
Brazil has had a number of deadly aircraft crashes in recent years, including one last August in Vinhedo, near Sao Paulo, that was particularly shocking. That passenger plane fell in a flat spin before crashing into the back yard of a home in a gated community, killing all those on board.
Guilherme Derrite, Sao Paulo’s secretary of public security, wrote on social media: “Our teams are working on the crash of a twin-engine plane on Marquês de São Vicente Avenue, in São Paulo.
“The fire department controlled the flames. Teams from the military police, civil police and scientific-technical police are also supporting the incident.”

Water is the world’s most precious resource
All living things from the smallest insect to the largest animal require water to live
It is literally the source of all life.
That is why a new study in Frontiers in Environmental Science assessing the potential for fog harvesting in one of the world’s most arid places is so exciting
but ingenious technology could produce nearly a gallon of water a day per square meter
Not Enough Rainfall The study was conducted in one of the driest places in the world. The BBC, reported that the Atacama Desert in Chile gets less than 0.19 inches of rainfall a year. On the edge of this arid desert sits the poor city of Alto Hospicio
Many of the city’s residents do not have access to clean water networks and survive off of water delivered by trucks.
In fact, according to Vice
only 1.6 percent of the about 10,000 residents of Alto Hospicio have access to the local water system
the researchers believe that the fog that regularly rolls through the city could be a source of water that has yet to be utilized.
All You Need is a Piece of Mesh and Some FogAs the BBC pointed out, fog harvesting is not a new technology
It has been used on a small scale in South and Central America
is the first study to calculate how much water fog harvesting can bring to an area like Alto Hospicio if implemented on a larger scale.
All that is needed is some fine mesh hung between two poles
water droplets form and then that water is then harvested into pipes and tanks.
According to the study, 17,000 square meters of mesh could provide 300,000 liters of water a month, which is the amount of water that is delivered by truck to Alto Hospicio. The fog water could also be used to irrigate hydroponic agriculture which could produce from 33 to 44 pounds of food a month
And a mere 110 square meters of mesh could help the city’s green spaces grow and thrive
for the places where these conditions occur
fog-harvesting could truly be a game-changer
And though it seems like something that would be very complex
it is actually a very simple technology to implement
all that is needed is some mesh and some ingenious thinking

Xantolo is experienced in a very special way in the municipality of San Vicente Tancuayalab, San Luis Potosí. Here, more than a tradition, it is part of the identity of the native communities; entire families design their costumes together.
Photographed by Arath Zumaya MuñozWhat is the meaning of the Xantolo arch? The process of creating the arches in Matlapa is characterized by a strong sense of community and deep devotion, as entire families enthusiastically and respectfully participate in their assembly. IIn addition to paying homage to their loved ones, every detail in the arches—such as the cempasúchil flowers and the colorful papel picado—reflects the beliefs and cultural identity of the region.
Photographed by Arath Zumaya MuñozWhat kind of music is used in the Xantolo? The music, played with traditional instruments such as the violin and the jarana huasteca, gives rhythm to the dances that are performed both in public spaces and in the homes of families, where they are meant to bless the atmosphere.
The Xantolo in San Martin is not limited to the comparsas, however: Each family also places altars in their homes in honor of their deceased. These altars are decorated with cempasúchil flowers, which guide the souls with their aroma, as well as candles, favorite foods of the deceased, and other personal objects. Families wait with respect and devotion for the souls to return and share the food and drink on the altar.
Photographed by Arath Zumaya MuñozThe huehues also wear traditional costumes, which can vary from old clothes or clothes made by local seamstresses. These characters make up the comparsas, of which several tend to come from each colony or neighborhood of the municipality.
In Tanquián, before starting the celebration, revelers go to the municipality’s cemetery on the 31st, where they ask permission to dance. Characters such as the devil and the cowboy make seven laps around the cemetery in order to obtain this permission, an act they perform with great respect. It’s believed that the people who dance lend their bodies so that the deceased or spirits from beyond can come and enjoy the festivity.
Afterwards, the huehues dance through the streets of the municipality, accompanied by live music played on violin, quinta, and jarana. Their presence is solemn and, at the same time, festive, an echo of past times that rings with each step.

Mindelo is the place to be on the Cape Verdean island São Vicente where you need to be if
but just places where you can sit down for fresh fish
what are you going to fill your belly with
The Neapolitan owner doesn't do things halfway: a thin base
top-quality mozzarella and that unmistakable wood-fired oven taste
we have to announce that the place is being sold and the owner is moving back to Naples
you can still enjoy your last chance for real Neapolitan pizza on São Vicente
Just remember that this is not the most pleasant area to walk around
which is best arranged in advance before you go to Bella Napoli
Fancy an evening of more extensive dining with a great view
Here you sit on a terrace with a panoramic view over Mindelo
while drinking a cocktail and enjoying delicious food
this is in a neighborhood where you better not walk around alone at night
but that is more of a guideline than a guarantee – not everything is available daily
Don't expect a set table or an extensive wine list
Then you've come to the right place You Sabor good
the pizza at Bella Napoli may be a little bit better
but otherwise you can score delicious pastas
You are literally sitting on the water with front-row seats for the most beautiful sunsets
the sun slowly sinking into the ocean—you get the idea
but surprisingly it's the burgers that are the real stars of the menu
Some locals swear that this is where you eat the best burger in Mindelo—and of course you want to taste it
The Floating Bar is – as the name suggests – a bar on the water
While you are floating in the harbour of Mindelo with a drink in your hand
you see boats passing by and you hear sailors
drunken captains and travellers exchanging stories about their journeys to faraway places
During the day you want to hang out here in the sun with a cold beer
and in the evening it feels like a meeting place where everyone is welcome
Then after your meal you can just roll onto the beach Laginha
You can sit here under a parasol with your flip-flops half on
at a table on the wooden deck or just at the bar
On the menu: from finger food to full meals – think fresh fish
tourists and many Madeirans that are on holiday at this time to São Vicente
The poster has just been released and the acts and djs are all there
and promises to be an almost week long party
FestivalpartySao vicent
I can well recommend Sao Vicente Guest House
within short walking distance to all the action
Stayed there a couple of times so know it well

Choose which otherworldly and spectacular Cabo Verde island is right for you © Susana_Martins / Shutterstock
Marc is just back from Cabo Verde where he researched and wrote the upcoming Pocket Cabo Verde (out October 2024)
Here he breaks down which island is best for your favorite type of vacation
A sprinkling of volcanic islands almost 600km (373 miles) off the coast of Senegal, Cabo Verde is an archipelago that has it all: sweeping beaches of golden sand; active
climbable volcanoes; West Africa’s best hiking and a lively local music and arts scene
This diversity means every island has its own unique charms
and traveling between them can be an unpredictable affair
We've got everything you need to know to choose the perfect Cabo Verde island for your vacation
By far the most touristed island, Sal is also the Cabo Verde destination with the most services
The epicentre of the tourist action is the town of Santa Maria
with a world-class beach and more restaurants than most of the country’s islands put together
When you’ve had enough of caipirinhas and sun lotion on the sands
take a day excursion with one of a multitude of local guides to some intriguing spots
Let baby lemon sharks nibble your toes in the shallows off the east coast
float Dead Sea-style at the salt pans of Pedra de Lume and spot turtles on the west coast – all easily manageable in a day
Planning tip: There’s no need to book tours and excursions in advance
You can wait until you are on the ground to find the right guide for you
Santiago is by far the most populated island in the archipelago and certainly has the liveliest feel
This is helped along by the fact that the Cabo Verdean capital
A short ride to the west of Praia lies Cabo Verde’s only UNESCO-listed site
once a major Portuguese colonial city that played a large part in the West African trade of enslaved people
Today you can clamber around the ruins of cathedrals and monasteries or have a bite to eat in Cabo Verde’s oldest street
but Santiago has a network of marked trails that runs the entire length of the island as well as lots of associated infrastructure
Those trails reach a crescendo at Tarrafal
Santiago’s best beach resort with a truly Caribbean feel
Planning tip: Many make the mistake of staying in Praia and taking trips north
Base yourself in the northern beach resort of Tarrafal for a much more pleasant experience
Though divided from Sal to the north by a mere 40km (25 miles) of ocean, Boa Vista couldn’t be more different
this is the island in the archipelago for those looking to escape
wander golden sands and dream of pirates and shipwrecks
Sal Rei is the capital –a place with a lively expat scene and innovative new restaurants, such as Bowlavista
With their cool bars and shimmering white sand
the town’s beaches would be enough for most islands
such as endless Santa Monica and the dunes of Varandinha
Boa Vista has its own stretch of desert (the Viana)
where the sand is piled up to 50m (164ft) high –a magical place to watch the stars at night and sandboard by day
Planning tip: Boa Vista is best seen from the back of a 4X4 pickup
and the good news is there are plenty of local operators in Sal Rei willing to take you out to ride those dunes
Santo Antão is Cabo Verde’s Jekyll and Hyde island with two very different sides to it
Promotional bumf shows hikers passing through lush vegetation
but around two-thirds of the island is dry and barren
The third you’ll be interested in is the north
where you’ll find the Paúl Valley –arguably Cabo Verde’s top hike
with several routes passing through terraced farmland
rum-like concoction made in small distilleries along the valley from the sugar cane that thrives there
the O Curral restaurant is a superb place to replenish calories
Planning tip: The only reliable ferry service in the entire archipelago operates between Mindelo on São Vicente and Porto Novo on Santo Antão
This makes these the only two islands you can safely plan to visit in one trip
Planning tip: Mindelo is a place where it pays to go with the flow. There’s always something going on in town, from concerts to art shows, parties to street theater, so once you’ve unpacked, head out into the vibrant streets and let yourself be surprised.
Out in the far west of the archipelago, Fogo and Brava are an Atlantic double act with an off-the-map feel. The biggest draw here is the crater of the active volcano that gave birth to the island millions of years ago. Incredibly there are villages below the summit, which often get in the way of determined lava flows (last time in 2014).
The reason locals insist on living there is immediately clear – wine! Grapes love the volcanic soil in the caldera, and the local wine is special indeed. After sipping the local Chã das Caldeiras white, take a hike up the peak before boarding or sledging back down on the volcanic ash. That same volcanic soil also provides nutrients for coffee bushes, with plantations spread across the east of the island. Connoisseurs long since declared Fogo coffee one of the best beans in the world.
Brava is the most remote of Cabo Verde’s ten islands and feels like a true escape from 21st-century tourism. The beach village of Fajã de Agua on the west coast is a particularly dreamy place.
Planning tip: The timing of ferry services and absence of flights means you can’t make a day trip from Fogo to Brava, so you’ll need to book at least one night in a guesthouse on the tiny island.
