The battle to qualify for the 2025 Championship Tour ends in Saquarema
A culmination of the Challenger Series’ six events
we’ve already seen teen phenom Erin Brooks clinch her spot for next year
But why end the Challenger Series race in Brazil
The entire stretch of coastal Saquarema hosts a number of excellent breaks
great tubes with a punch like San Diego’s Blacks Beach
Itauna is another classic left point and a solid beach break full of shifting peaks
And just south of Saquarema Jacone Beach has powerful beachbreak that catches most swells too
Saquarema was known as a simple and quiet fishing village before it was ‘discovered’ by a few Carioca surfers from Rio de Janeiro
it has raised some legendary Brazilian waveriders
The late Leonardo Neves and Raoni Monteiro were the first outstanding competitors to make a name for themselves from these beaches
the top talent from Saquarema include big wave specialist Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca and his brother CT standout João “Chumbinho,” who until his tragic head injury at Pipeline
reached as high as number three on the WSL World Tour ratings
As with other semi-urban beaches the WSL circuit visits there are great eateries right along the beach
on the coastal stretch of Saquarema include a variety the good spots from beach shacks to linin tablecloth restaurants
A virtual smorgasbord of cuisines dot the beaches here
Kiosk 12 Authentic beachfront restaurant with local fish and seafood
Pousada Algas Marinas is the place to find them
The prato feito (daily special) is always the best bet here
Garota De Itaúna serves up both great seafood and meat
At Bar Da Praia you can sample good sushi and also do some shopping at their gift shop and surf shop
For the best views in town (and there are some spectacular one here) don’t miss Fixi Restaurante – Great vistas and great seafood
And if your budget or your taste runs toward home cooking
You can find just about anything you need for a Brazilian barbecue at his local market
And Brazilian Barbeque is worth trying whether you’re in Saquarema
which is the Portuguese word for “barbecue”
where spit-roasting has been raised to the level of art
Think whole meal cooked on a rotisserie basically a mix grill with the meats cooked on an open flame
any larger barbecue grill will work – even if it isn't the authentic Brazilian method
Next is a chicken that has been marinated in salt
and garlic with a squeeze of fresh lime juice
finely chopped1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro or flat-leaf parsley1/2 cup fresh lime juice1/4 cup extra virgin olive oilCoarse sea salt and freshly ground black pepper6 bone-in
For the Sausage1-1/2 pounds kielbasa sausage
For the vegetables12 or more baby bell peppers
peeled and quartered lengthwiseExtra virgin olive oilSalt
InstructionsWhat I’ve found that makes things easy is to put your wood skewers in warm water for a half hour or so as you are prepping everything that will go on the skewers
Doing this prevents the skewers from burning and also as the water in the skewers begins to heat
Make the marinade for the chicken: In a small mixing bowl
Place the chicken thighs in a resealable plastic bag and pour the marinade over them
Seal the bag and marinate in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 hours
turning the bag occasionally so the thighs marinate evenly
Slice the beef crosswise against the grain into 2-inch-wide pieces
Season generously on all sides with salt and pepper
then form into a “C” shape with the fat cap on the outside
Skewer the pieces of meat through the bottom and top sides to maintain the “C” shape
Spit-roast until each is cooked to taste: about 35 to 40 minutes for the chicken and onions
and 30 minutes for the peppers and kielbasa
Rotate the skewers every 10 minutes or so (or as needed) so each ingredient spends some time close to the coals
You may need longer or shorter cooking times
Cook the chicken through (to an internal temperature of 165 degrees)
Serve the beef crusty on the outside and medium-rare (130 to 135 degrees) inside
Three sauces (makes about a cup of each):For the Creamy Aji Verde Sauce2 cup coriander
finely chopped6 tsp lime juice3 Tbs mayonnaise4 Tbs sour creamFor the Chimichurri Sauce2 cup coriander leaves2 cup flat leaf (Italian) parsley leaves2 garlic cloves
finely chopped1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil1 1/2 Tbs white wine vinegarFor the Smoky Tomato Bell pepper Salsa1 small red onion
stems and leaves½ pound of cherry tomatoes1 red Bell pepper3 tsp tomato paste (concentrated purée)1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil2 Tbs red wine vinegar2 1/2 tsp smoked paprika2 tsp of sugar
Creamy Aji Verde SauceProcess all of the ingredients in a blender until smooth
then pour into a serving bowl and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.Chimichurri sauceChop the herbs and put them in a bowl with the garlic
then season to taste with salt.Smoky Tomato Capsicum SalsaPut all the ingredients in a food processor and pulse until roughly chopped
you can chop all the vegetables and herbs by hand
Pour into a bowl and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

A mid-comp check-in at the year’s final stop.
Midpoint of the final Challenger Series comp of the year. Scabs split, wounds rot, and the rankings shift—every heat win a gasp of air, every loss a tooth in the flesh.
It’s strange that so many surfers in this comp, even those buried at the bottom of the rankings, can still scramble their way into the top ten and qualify. Is this what modern competitive surfing looks like? Big results in big moments trumping a year of reliable ham sandwiches?
I happen to enjoy sandwiches, but here we are — halfway through the end. Some are still trapped in the maze, searching for a way out. Most are already dust, remnants of a fight that’s ended.
Kaipo, as he so often does, said it best. “There’s gonna be cheers, and there’s gonna be tears on the sand in Saquarema.”
So far, only two surfers who didn’t have their spots on the 2025 CT locked in before this event have made it through: Erin Brooks and Miggy Pupo.
Brooks launched her year with a win at Snapper Rocks and a runner-up finish at Narrabeen. Two 25ths at Ballito and Portugal followed, but she still rolled into Saquarema ranked No. 4 on the CS leaderboard. After tearing through her Round of 32 heat in Saquarema, Erin has done enough to cement her place on the 2025 CT. Destiny cracks its knuckles.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Stab Magazine (@stab)
On Instagram, she wrote, “I can’t believe I get to travel and compete with the best surfers in the world. Dreams do come true!”
The OG Pupo bit the dust overnight in the Round of 32, but a 17th-place finish was just enough to scrape him over the tour’s flimsy finish line. By once again getting booted from the CT and then clawing his way back in the same year, Miggy is entering Jadson Andre battler territory.

After some brutal early-round losses, Callum Robson and Mikey McDonagh are officially out of the qualification race. The boys came into the event sitting at 11th and 12th, but both got knocked out in consecutive heats in the second round. Mikey finished dead last in his heat, while Callum stumbled just .2 points short against Dakota Walters, limping away with a 9-point total. Gut punches for the boys.
After winning this competition two years ago, Alyssa Spencer needed a strong showing to crack the top 5, but she was dumped in the second round. It’s back to the Chang for the former CT competitor.

Mateus Herdy and Morgan Cibilic have both climbed seven spots to land at 16 and 17, respectively, but they took very different roads to get there. Morgs did just enough to slip through his heats. Mateus, meanwhile, decided to throw down an outrageous backflip, inking the first 10 of the comp. It’s a loud reminder that his Hi-Fi game deserves a place on the CT.
Perennial cut-lurker Deivid Silva has clawed his way up 5 spots, now just a cat’s whisker from the from fellow countryman Michel Rodrigues. For now, Michel’s clinging to 10th, but he’s an inch from the gutter.
Not much has shifted in the women’s standings, but No. 5 Nadia Erostarbe just got booted in the Round of 32, and the vultures are circling overhead. Vahine Fierro and Luana Silva are still in the fight, both sitting on 19,185 points—just two heat wins away from snatching Nadia’s spot.
When the furnace gets hot, the iron gets forged. Jacko Backer and Kade Matson proved this to be true, with both of their winning scores being announced on the sand after the buzzer—Kade keeping his CT hopes alive in the process. Jacko missed the first two events of the season, so his qualification is shot, but he’s still well and truly in the running for surfing’s most glorious creature. Check his post-wave claim below if you need proof.

Joel Vaughn entered the event within the qualification line at number 9
he’s slipped three spots to number 12 in the live rankings
Any slip-up now means the Stab Highway alum could be cold-shouldered from the tour once again
“I’m going in knowing I need to earn my spot on the CT—full attack mode,” Joel told us before the event. If there was ever a time to bare his teeth, it’s now.
The next call rings in on October 15, 2024, at 6:45 AM BRT.

Herdy takes his performance to dizzying heights
Mateus Herdy sticks a perfect 10 at the Corona Saquarema Pro
Yeah, the stakes at the Corona Saquarema Pro are through the roof for aspiring Championship Tour qualifiers
but it's also one of those contests were anything can happen
Mateus Herdy flipping out during the Round of 32
Launching what the WSL has termed a “corkscrew backflip,” Herdy sticks the landing
the judges love it and rain 10s down upon him
It's one of those rare perfect 10-point rides for a single maneuver — and the only 10 of the 2024 Challenger Series campaign
I got those two sevens right at the start and had priority
but I ended up paddling on a wave and lost priority
It’s been a while since I made one of those
Italo and Yago have already made such a mark on Saquarema
so I feel like I need to do a lot more to be on that list,” he continued
“What they’ve done on the CT is on another level
And on the subject of Medina and the boys, thanks to his result in the Round of 32, Brazil's Miguel Pupo has qualified for the 2025 Championship Tour. His brother, Sammy
qualified on the back of his recent win in Portugal
but I feel like the brunt of the work was done throughout the year and this is just the endgame,” said Pupo
“I had good results at the majority of the events and that gives you a boost to keep pushing to achieve your goals
plus my brother qualifying is so inspirational and to make it back on Tour with them is going to be amazing
The top four qualifiers from the Challenger Series hail from Brazil, while Australia's George Pittar and France's Marco Mignot have also made the cut. As of press time, there were four spots left for next year's men's CT. And with Canadian teen phenom Erin Brooks qualifying for the women's CT earlier in the event, there's only one spot left open for the women.
The Saquerema Pro is slated to run through October 20.
The world’s coming to an end, and there’s fifteen seats on the last plane out of here.
Wherever we land, we’ll need doctors — can’t build a future without someone stitching the pieces back together. The best come out of Brazil, so we’ll take five. Health is wealth.
We’ll need bread, wine, and a little class to remember what living tastes like. Toss in one Frenchman, for flair and fermentation.
Cities don’t build themselves, and Australians swing hammers better than most. We’ll grab four. Practical hands.
We’ll need some firepower, too. A couple North Americans should keep things orderly. Two will do just fine.
That leaves three seats. Three golden tickets to salvation. Who’s coming with us? Who’s getting left behind?
20 heats ran overnight. Here’s what went down in Saqtown.
Four fresh names joined Brazil’s quad-strong presence inside the qualification line overnight. By advancing to the quarters, Marco Mignot, Joel Vaughan, and Deivid Silva have muscled into the top 10, locking in their tickets for the 2025 Championship Tour. They’re all still in the mix; still in the hunt to ice their qualification with a win in Saquarema.

Meanwhile, George Pittar’s early exit in round two left him chewing his nerves. But fate threw him a bone—others tripped, and now Pittar can finally exhale; his qualification for next year is locked.

The war ended quietly in the night. After battles fought to the brink of triumph, hope was finally lost. With a heavy heart, I write that Alan Cleland Jr., Mexico’s bright and beautiful son, has had his flame extinguished. In the last heat of the round of 32, under uninspiring conditions, Al could manage no better than a last-place finish. Across Mexico, tears fall, and candles burn in quiet tribute to honour the fallen.
But Al did not fall alone. Others went down with him — Morgan Cibilic, Winter Vincent, Michael Rodrigues, Hiroto Ohhara, Jordan Lawler, Jacob Willy, and Dylan Moffat. Brave souls, all of them.

Mateus Herdy is set to battle Deivid Silva in QF2. With Deivid already locked into next year’s tour, will he take it easy on Mateus, letting him through without a fight? Or is there some lingering resentment after hearing Mateus on our podcast? Time will tell.
Jacko Baker is continuing his magnificent rampage through the ranks. Throughout the event, Jacko’s been competing on a pink board, and as it turns out, it’s not just to make him look completely fabulous — he’s raising funds for International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, honouring his late mother, who was taken by the disease.
“She’s a special lady, and she still is. That will never change,” said Jacko. He’s got Kade Matson in QF1, and if he manages to win the comp, there won’t be a dry speck of sand left Saquarema.

On the men’s side, Ohara finished just five spots shy of making the jump. We’ve all been rooting hard for Ohara ever since he won the US Open of Surfing back in 2015 and told the world he was “gonna buy some new cars” with his winnings. With Snake back in his corner, we’re thinking 2025 might finally be his year. Either way, we’re hyped to watch his (and the rest of Snake’s pupils) journey unfold in the next season of Snaketales.
Oh, and do you ever wonder why pro surfers go through so many surfboards? Check out the 18:00 mark. Unless you’re Matt Biolos…maybe skip that part.

but that hardly makes me unusual as a Western surfer

The irony of moving to the clean air in this verdant nook of Brazil is that as soon as it was announced they were moving from Rio to Saquarema
the area was promptly hit by an outbreak of yellow fever
This meant all surfers this year had to have their yellow fever shots before heading over or face being quarantined on the way home
Yellow fever is this year's Zika and is bad news if you contract it
you'll have a tough time getting through Immigration anywhere on the way home

While Macy Callaghan and Marco Mignot take home event wins
16 were still standing for finals day at Saquarema
a wave that needs no introduction — nor excessive observation
Two spots were up for grabs on the men’s side and just one on the women’s
Yolanda Hopkins took down her countrywoman Teresa Bonvalot to stay in the race for the last women’s CT spot
Vahine Fierro had no choice but to beat Sophia Medina on her home turf to keep chasing that coveted seat at the big-girls’ table
Isabella Nichols ended Janire Gonzalez Etxabarri’s campaign
and Macy Callaghan put an end to Luana Silva’s run
The first heat of the day saw the people’s favorite Jackson Baker eliminating Kade Matson to secure a spot in the semifinals
Next up, a freshly requalified Deivid Silva faced Brazilian air extraordinaire Mateus Herdy
Mateus went to the sky while Deivid stuck his quads firmly into the rights
Despite a few quality connections for Mateus
Deivid was on the better waves and took the lead with a few well-oiled windshield wipers
Deivid closed Mateus out with a rotation of his own
earning the best score of the heat for a single maneuver
You could see from Mateus’ body language that this loss was especially painful for the two-time Stab Highway star — this is the second year in a row he’s missed out on the CT by a single heat win
the last two heats Mateus lost (the Portugal QF and today’s Saquarema QF) were against good friends who had already qualified for the CT
who despite being knocked out earlier in the event
had now officially qualified for the 2025 CT — on his 28th birthday

making his intentions clear to everyone within range
and quickly surpassed Levi’s opener with a pair of high sevens to claim his spot in the semis
Mignot’s victory sealed the final CT slot for Maui’s Jackson Bunch
who celebrated his qualification in the shorebreak
Both Deivid Silva and Marco Mignot had the power to make life easier for their direct opponents to qualify but decided to show just how serious they were about competing — and

Women’s SemifinalsWhat a heat to kick off the round
Portugal’s Yolanda Hopkins met Tahitian tube queen Vahine Fierro in a face-on dispute for the coveted 5th spot in the rankings
forcing her fully-deck-gripped board through the scarce pockets of power on the rights
while Vahine showed elegance and economy of movement on her sans-pumps backhand riposte
when Yolanda needed a 6.24 to snatch the win
mid-sized right didn’t offer the score she needed
Although Vahine will be flying the French flag
the Huahine native will become the first-ever female Tahitian on the CT

most of the excitement around the event had fizzled
and some quietly wondered whether they should even try this again next year
moving into her first CS final since her stellar campaign in 2022.Men’s Semifinals
Jackson Baker started off by blowing kisses to the Brazilian beachgoers
celebrating his opener against Deivid Silva
who quickly told the Novocastrian to hold his caipirinha for a lightning lead change that he held until the final horn
further arguing for Deivid’s place on the CT — 2024 marks his fourth distinct qualification from the QS/CS to the big leagues
Marco Mignot stomped air reverses #38-43 of the event over Joel Vaughan’s head to advance to his second CS final of the year
Macy Callaghan dominated the final against Vahine Fierro from the get-go
Macy won’t need to compete in the regional qualifiers in Australia and will enter the 2025 Challenger Series as a higher seed
providing plenty of motivation to push for CT qualification next year
Under the watchful and slightly stressed eye of his impromptu coach (Miguel Pupo)
Deivid Silva was pushed against the ropes by Marco Mignot
Mignot’s turn-and-air-reverse game had Deivid — often described as “reliable” by the commentary team — nearly comboed and out of contention
With faux-gangster hand sign claims (MM) and the vocal presence of his father on the beach
the Mignot camp made their dominance of surfing’s secondary stage clear.Men’s 2024 CS Qualifiers

2013) – Rippable waves in the 3-5 foot range (1-1.5 meters) were on hand at Itauna Beach
earned his first career ASP victory by defeating Marc Lacomare (FRA)
by a score of 17.60 to 15.67 in the Final on Sunday at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola in Brazil
Coleborn earned U$ 40,000 in prize money and 6,500 points to catapult him up to number 14 on the ASP World Ranking
there were still plenty of high scoring waves throughout the day that included some long barrels
big turns and even a 10-point ride of the Lacomare in final heat
Mitchel Coleborn showed a consistent performance throughout the entire event by executing fluid carves, big hacks and backed it up by taking out Dion Atkinson (AUS), 27, in the Quarterfinals, local favorite Raoni Monteiro (BRA), 31, in the Semifinals. Marc Lacomare beat Gabriel Medina
in other Semifinal and Aritz Aranburu (EUK)
on the last day of the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime
“I knew it was going to be a difficult heat
but I just tried to stick to my strategy and find the best waves,” said Mitchel Coleborn
“It was crazy because Marc (Lacomare) got a 10 right at the end and I couldn’t believe it
but he still needed to get another good score and no other waves came through
I’m just so happy that everything worked out
the waves were great and I’m stoked with the win.”
Lacomare also jumped into 21st place on the ASP World Ranking and is accumulating valuable points for qualification onto the WCT in 2014
I’m very happy with my result,” said Marc Lacomare
but I still got that 10 on an incredible wave
It was a great week with amazing waves and I’ll definitely be leaving Saquarema with good memories.”
The beach at Itauna was packed with people to cheer on hometown surfer Raoni Monteiro (BRA)
who did not perform up to expectations after a recent injury
but still received a standing ovation after being eliminated in the Semifinals
“For me it was a victory just getting to the Semifinals at home with everybody cheering me on and sending a positive vibe to get to the Finals,” said Raoni Monteiro
“Two years ago I got a 2nd place finish here and this year I fought hard for the win even though I hurt my back yesterday (Saturday)
But Mitch (Coleborn) caught the best waves and so he deserved the win.”
Monteiro also improved his ASP World Ranking by climbing up to number 15 and hopes to continue his success at the upcoming WCT events in Fiji and Indonesia
I already got an e-mail telling me to get my big boards and even my vest ready because it’s supposed to be huge in Fiji again,” continued Monteiro
“I just want to go big and I hope I don’t get injured again
I need to remain consistent with my results because I’ve been fighting injuries for the past three or four years
But I just try to focus on my objectives and know that all of the hard work will payoff.”
The Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola is produced by Adding Sports and sponsored by the State of Rio de Janeiro
With additional support provided by the Peugeot Montreal Dealership
the Rio de Janeiro State Surfing Federation (FESERJ)
and the Brazilian Association of Surfing Professionals (ABRASP)

and one event left to go on the Challenger Series as the Corona Saquerama Pro kicks off on October 12
In the Men’s there are seven of ten CT places still up for grabs
The next 10 days will determine the makeup of next year's CT
who would both most likely need a Final to get over the line
Kauli Vaast has had a pretty good year
Winning the Olympic Gold at home in Tahiti was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity he grabbed with both hands
upcoming raw talent and dedicated journeymen on the Challenger Series don’t pay much heed to Olympic glory
who many experts believe has the all-around surfing talent and dedication to make a serious mark on the CT
has won just two heats all year on the Challenger Series and sits 64 on the rankings
but the Tahitian needs a result in Brazil to get his real goal of CT qualification back on track
Portugal champion Samuel Pupo and veteran Alejo Muniz go into their home CS event already qualified
it is Muniz whose story is the most compelling
He has had full reconstructions on each knee and has come within a few heats of qualification in the last few years
His post-heat interview speech in Ericeira
having finally requalified in his 8th year of trying
was perhaps the most emotional the sport has seen
Miguel Pupo is almost guaranteed a CT spot
and Edgard Groggia and Michael Rodrigues are well-placed
With only three Brazilians making the cut in 2024 (and Toledo taking a break) the reinforcements are coming in battle-hardened and with a point to prove
In the Men’s it’s been the Aussies who have shown the strongest resistance to the Brazilian surge on the “Changa”
George Pittar looks best placed to make the leap
A few heat wins in Saquerema should get him his rookie year
Joel Vaughan was the other big winner in Ericeira
a semifinal finish moving him 18 places up the board into the top 10
The Central Coast surfer is underrated and perhaps overshadowed by his younger brother Huey
but his 10-point ride alley-pop in Saquearema last year showed what he is capable of
who missed the US Open after breaking his tibia at Skeleton Bay
is now fully fit and returned to his power-laden best in Portugal to sit one spot outside qualification
and I’m ready to leave it all on the line in Brazil,” said Robson
“I was complacent on the CT and dropped my standards
just makes me more hungry and more determined,” Tya Zebrowski said after losing to Sally Fitzgibbons in Portugal
“I’ve qualified for the Challenger Series in 2025 and the goal is CT qualification.” That the runner-up in Ericeira delivered the line in the squeaky high pitch of a just-turned-teen shouldn’t water down the warning
The Tahitian based in France isn't just the best 13-year-old surfer on the planet right now
she might be the best 13-year-old the sport has seen
She surfed as a Wildcard in Portugal and is heading to Waco rather than Saquereama so won’t be in Brazil to cause more upset
She will be there next year though The rest of the field should make the most of her absence
BRAZIL – OCTOBER 16: Vahine Fierro of France upon qualifying for the 2025 WSL Championship Tour at the Corona Saquarema Pro on October 16
(Photo by Thiago Diz/World Surf League via Getty Images)
After winning The Tahiti Pro in August as a wildcard, Vahine Fierro flew to Brazil and finished second in Saquarema — the exact result required to punch her ticket to the 2025 CT. It’s one thing to make a Challenger Series final
and it’s another to do it with everything on the line
2024 proved Fierro is one of those surfers with ice running through her veins
“It's been a few years of trying to qualify
I had so much fun competing and surfing in these different parts of the world,” Fierro writes alongside the edit below
“Here are some of my best waves from my Challenger series campaign and along the way my first WCT win (as a wildcard) at Teahupoo in some of the biggest and most perfect waves I ever surfed in a contest.”
As you’ll see, Fierro’s backhand snap is just as mean as her frontside tuberiding skills, and that deadly combo is what led to two finals finishes (in South Africa and Brazil) plus that CT wildcard win at home in Tahiti in flexing, 6- to 8-foot Chopes
With shreddable waves like Snapper and Lowers on tour next year
Fierro is well-positioned to quickly make a big impact in the big leagues
it’s gotta feel good to silence those who say she’s just a Teahupo’o specialist
If Fierro can get on a roll early in 2025 we can easily see her making the Top 5
And if Cloudbreak flexes its muscles for the WSL Finals next year
A world title as a rookie is definitely in reach
BRAZIL – JUNE 28: Five-time WSL Champion Carissa Moore of Hawaii after surfing in the Final at the Oi Rio Pro on June 28

“The competition finished off in spectacular fashion in front of a huge crowd at Praia de Itaúna in Saquarema, Brazil. Five-time WSL Champion Moore defeated Johanne Defay (FRA) in the Finals
while Toldo took out rookie Samuel Pupo (BRA)
to earn his third-straight event win in Saquarema and his fourth overall at the Oi Rio Pro
Clinches a Spot in the WSL Final 5Current World No
1 Moore has been consistent throughout the 2022 CT season with three 2nd place finishes in addition to her 1st place result in Saquarema
Today’s win marks the 25th CT victory of her career and she now has her sights set on another possible World Title at the Rip Curl WSL Finals at Lower Trestles from September 8-16
earning a 7.50 (out of a possible 10) on solid backhand surfing on the predominantly lefthand waves in the 4-6 foot range at Praia de Itaúna
She followed with a 4.83 for a 12.33 total (out of a possible 20)
had two mid-range scores of a 5.50 and a 5.93 with the clock ticking down
Moore blasted consecutive backside hacks with speed and progression to earn a 9.50
the highest score of the event in the women’s division
“This is one of my favorite wins in my whole career,” said Moore
“Coming up against my good friend Johanne Defay is always difficult
She got me in G-Land and I really feel like she’s the one to beat this year
I was behind in the whole heat and I thought that I was probably going to get another 2nd place here
I’ve just had such an incredible week at a house with all my friends
and I’ve felt a lot of love and support here
so I think that’s what made it even more special.”
In addition to her victory, Moore was able to clinch a spot in the WSL Final 5, extending her lead in the rankings over Defay, Lakey Peterson (USA), Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) and Brisa Hennessy (CRI)
sweet!” As was the case with the majority of the athletes competing at the 2022 Oi Rio Pro presented by Corona
there was an exhilarating feeling at the event brought by the energy and stoke provided by the most passionate and avid surf fans in the world
But it’s the fans that make it so special,” said Defay from the Award Ceremony
Toledo Earns Third-Straight Victory in SaquaremaToledo is now being referred to as the “King of Saquarema” after winning his third-consecutive event in Saquarema and four total victories at the Oi Rio Pro
Toledo boosted the biggest backside air rotation of the event for a perfect 10-point ride
Toledo also caught one of the longest barrels of the event and added a quick air-reverse on the closeout section for an 8.67
Toledo was unstoppable in the Finals and his torrid pace resulted in an 18.67 total
the highest of the event.“I feel completely blessed for being in this position and sharing this moment with my family
friends and this amazing crowd,” said Toledo
Yago (Dora) and Italo (Ferreira) who all made it to the Semifinals
It was a historic moment for us Brazilian athletes and the crowd was a class act
showed love to everyone on Tour and made this one of the most magical events ever.”
Toledo has equaled the record set by Dave Macaulay (AUS)
Toledo’s incredible three consecutive wins came in 2018
with his first coming at the Oi Rio Pro in 2015 at Barra da Tijuca
Samuel Pupo made it to the first Final of his career on the Championship Tour against Toledo. As a rookie, the young high-flyer had spectacular performances throughout the Oi Rio Pro, taking down big names such as Caio Ibelli (BRA), Mateus Herdy (BRA), and Italo Ferreira (BRA) on his way to the Finals
“Filipe started with a 10 on a wave that I could have blocked because I had priority
He went left and I ended up going to the right,” said Pupo
it was difficult to recover because the sea calmed down and not many waves came through
so it seemed that everything was going in his favor
But I'm really happy I made the Final
but the year is not over and I already really want to compete again
I can't wait to go to J-Bay and do my best there,” completed Pupo
Toledo and Moore Also Win Inaugural Mano Ziul AwardIn what was one of the most emotional moments of the Oi Rio Pro
the inaugural Mano Ziul Award was presented to honor a visionary and pioneer in the sport of surfing
The recently deceased Mano Ziul was able to provide the first webcasts for contests
bringing the most remote locations into the audience’s living room
His creation of the scoring system has been a fundamental part of competitive surfing ever since it was created
the Mano Ziul Award was given to the men’s and women’s athletes with the highest heat total of the event at the Oi Rio Pro.Mano Ziul’s family
represented by his wife Sandra and his children Luiza and Ziul (Ziulzinho) Andueza presented the trophies to Carissa Moore for her 15.43 total and Filipe Toledo
both in the Finals.“I want to dedicate this victory to Mano Ziul
This win should be celebrated by all of us for everything he has done for the sport of surfing,” declared Toledo from the award ceremony.”

The World Surf League (WSL) has announced the shift of the primary venue for the 2017 Rio Pro from Postinho Beach
Postinho has served as the event's main location since 2012
but challenges regarding wave and water quality in recent years have prompted the WSL and event organizers to explore alternative venues in Brazil
a location that has been utilized by WSL Qualifying Series (QS) events in past seasons
will welcome the world's best surfers on the elite Samsung Galaxy WSL Championship Tour for the second time since 2002
“I'm excited to confirm the new location of Saquarema for the 2017 Rio Pro,” said Kieren Perrow
“The athletes will benefit from its consistency and potential for excellent waves
but we rarely got it at its best and the water quality in recent years has been a big challenge
We were committed to keeping the tour in Brazil
and look forward to delivering an outstanding event for fans all over the world
We'd also like to thank Mayor Eduardo Paes and Riotur for their years of unconditional support for the World Surf League and the Rio Pro
and to the people of Rio for hosting us in their great City,” concluded Perrow
The winner of the men's 2016 Oi Rio Pro was John John Florence (HAW) while Tyler Wright (AUS) won the women's competition; Tyler has since been crowned the 2016 World Champion following the completion of the Roxy Pro France and Florence is the current men's frontrunner on the WSL Jeep Leaderboard
The complete 2017 WSL Schedule will be released on November 15
According to a press release from the WSL issued on Monday, Filipe Toledo has been fined for attempting to storm the judges tower after a Round-Three interference call at Saquarema and is officially suspended from competing in the OK Fiji Pro
“I'm a passionate guy and surfing is my life,” Toledo said in the press release
“After getting an interference in the third round in Saquarema
I was very upset and my actions after the heat were unacceptable
I take full responsibility for my actions and accept my suspension
but looking forward to returning stronger for Jeffreys Bay
Good luck to everyone in Fiji and thank you all for the continued support.”
The debated call occurred at around the 27-minute mark of Toledo's Round Three heat against Kanoa Igarashi
Neither surfer had yet established priority
Toledo and Igarashi paddle-battled for a peak
WSL judge Pritamo Ahrendt later explained that Igarashi owned the peak because he established middle positioning in an equal left-or-right situation
Judges decided that Toledo hindered Igarashi's takeoff
meaning that Toledo was slapped by a non-priority interference call just under four minutes in
The press release then explains that Toledo
attempted to storm the judges tower after the Round-Three loss
The WSL Rules and Disciplinary Committee evaluated the interaction and suspended Toledo from competition until after the OK Fiji Pro
along with a penalty fine of an undisclosed amount
“Filipe (Toledo) is a really good kid and an incredible surfer,” Renato Hickel
“The WSL is very fortunate to have someone of his caliber on tour and he is constantly progressing the level of surfing in the live arena
It's disappointing when we have to pass disciplinary action for any of our surfers
but that behavior is not acceptable for the sport
Filipe knows this and we look forward to seeing his talent back on tour very soon.”
Praia de Itaúna is set to host the world’s best athletes as the CT heads to Brazilian soil
Known for its beach packed with fervent and passionate fans
and a week-long schedule of events for the entire family
Saquarema has always been circled on the calendar for the WSL audience
The main break at Praia de Itaúna has consistently proven to be a highlight-worthy locale
both ending in punchy sections that give ample scoring opportunities and air sections that have rewarded the athletes and fans alike with some amazing maneuvers
Brisa Hennessy (CRI) lost possession of the yellow Leader jersey
The young Californian has taken the CT by storm with two victories during the 2024 season
including wins at Pipeline and Bells Beach
with his consistency throughout the year keeping him in front of the CT field
Florence has already reached the winner’s podium in Brazil
and his free-flowing style and powerful form match well with the punchy beach break at Praia de Itaúna
Other names to keep in mind include three-time WSL World Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA)
despite his success at a variety of CT locations
has yet to win on home soil in front of the fiery Brazilian fans
Another surfer who knows the ins and outs of Saquarema better than anyone else on Tour is local surfer João Chianca (BRA)
who recently returned to competition in El Salvador
earning a Quarterfinal finish against Medina
Chianca has been named the event wildcard for this year’s competition

Saquarema has drawn its fair share of Rio commuters through the decades
And now that the WSL makes an annual trip to Rio
Barrinha and Itaúna — Saquarema’s two trademark waves — have a lot more world recognition
The swell that just came to Rio last week is a perfect example of why the place churns out some of Brazil’s hardest chargers
Barrinha famously turned on for the final stretch of the 2019 Oi Rio Pro
shooting down the idea that the event would always be a sloppy beachbreak sore on the Dream Tour’s schedule
Last week’s session at the right hander went down in even better conditions
“Barrinha was literally FIRING,” filmmaker Matheus Cuoto told The Inertia after making the drive to Saquarema
and others were getting perfect barrels.”
The WSL had some terrible luck with contest windows in 2022
often missing season-best swells at places like G-Land by a matter of days
Maybe all that bad luck was used up in 2022 and we’ll get a day like this when the CT is in town next June

Moore (who had scores of 5.50 and a 5.93 as the last wave of the heat approached) delivered powerful backside turns to garner her a 9.50
the highest score of the event in the women’s event
I was behind in the whole heat and I thought that I was probably going to get another 2nd place here
so I think that’s what made it even more special,” said Moore
“This is one of my favorite wins in my whole career.”

The 2023 Championship Tour rosters are starting to shape up
With just one more event left on the 2022 Challenger Series schedule now
several surfers came to Rio hoping to lock up their qualification by the end of the Corona Saquarema Pro
had those plans squashed by none other than Gabriel Medina
but it felt like we were watching vintage Medina on a day where he dashed the hopes of a trio of surfers in one fell swoop
“He’s (Boukhiam) such a great surfer,” Medina said after the final heat
He’s one of the best to surf in a QS event and I can’t wait to see him on CT waves.”
