They were accompanied by the coordinator of the Science and Robotics workshop
and during the visit they were able to see how the planting process takes place and observe whether or not electromechanical equipment is used
by closely observing the community's processes
the students were able to better understand how the community organization of producers is formed and pay attention to the challenges of the community living in a place without access to running water and which makes intensive use of cisterns
During the time they spent in Barra do Vento
they were able to learn about building vegetable gardens
geographical aspects of the local landscape and small crop fields
During the visit, the students were at the home of a farmer registered with the National School Feeding Program (Pnae) and participated in a conversation circle with Jucicleide Ramos
president of the local Community Association
who explained how the entity works and how important it is for the community's residents
it was possible to compare the automated irrigation projects for vegetable gardens built by the Science and Robotics Workshop at CEC Serrinha
with the technologies used by producers in the community
Gedeão explains that the expected objectives of the activity were achieved: “We realized that most of the students enjoyed the experience
They understood the importance of the Association
and also expressed themselves in relation to their experiences with the countryside and family farming.”

Four cities in Brazil have committed to the Sustainable School program whose goal is to achieve 100 percent plant-based menus in their school cafeterias
and Teofilândia signed the agreement on March 19
Schools have committed to being completely plant-based by the end of 2019
The Sustainable School program is based on the right to health and food
which is provided for in the Federal Constitution and Law 11477/2009
school performance and the formation of students’ healthy eating habits.” Although the interpretation of this law is rather open-ended
Sustainable School’s creators have determined that plant-based school lunches contribute to that goal
The program began with four days of plant-based culinary training for the cities’ school cooks, led by a chef from Humane Society International
The vegan chef taught local school cooks how to prepare affordable
nutrient-dense recipes made from accessible
meat and other animal products will be phased out gradually
with a 25 percent reduction each semester until they reach their goal of 100 percent plant-based meals
Schools will begin with one meatless day per week
The changes are expected to impact more than 30,000 students in 435 lunchrooms serving more than 23 million meals annually
Although animal products will not be made available in the schools
Families who still want their children to have meat and dairy at school are permitted to send packed lunches
Even study subjects who did not fully adhere to the plant-based diet lost more weight than those involved in omnivorous weight loss plans
This means that health benefits can result from plant-based diets even without perfect adherence
A study from Loma Linda University shows that plant-based diets are more sustainable than diets containing animal products because they use fewer natural resources and are less environmentally devastating
Cows and sheep produce 80 percent of all agriculture-related greenhouse gas emissions
omnivorous diets require up to 2.9 times more water
and 1.4 times more pesticides when compared to vegetarian diets
they are also better for the environment than diets that contain animal products
The first two years of the program are considered the experimental phase
Students will undergo periodic health evaluations to determine the efficacy of the program

The Sustainable School program was partially inspired by the Meatless Monday campaign, which has been adopted by schools across the United States as well as in some other countries. The São Paulo city school district has participated in Meatless Mondays since 2009. In 2017, PS1 in Brooklyn
NY became the first school in the city to serve an all vegetarian menu every day of the week

Consanguineous marriages bring about an unknown form of deficiency in a Northeast town
EDUARDO CESARA family member with one of the 26 people: affected by the syndrome: recessive illnessEDUARDO CESAR
Some fifteen years ago Elenara Maria de Queiroz Moura was pregnant– and a scene from a soap opera would not go out of her head
A couple who were cousins wanted to have children and looked for a gynecologist
the television soap opera doctor was tacit: it’s better to avoid a pregnancy
Consanguineous marriages show a higher risk of generating children with some kind of hereditary disorder
some 370 km to the west of the state capital Natal
where marrying a relative is a local custom
And there were in the family “handicapped”
uncles confined to wheel chairs due to a mysterious disorder
stiffens the joints and then weakens first the legs and then the arms
“I was relieved and thought that everything was alright”
“I became pregnant with my second child without having any fear” But the story of Paulinha
a neurodegenerative disorder recently discovered among the inhabitants of the small town and described in May by researchers from the Human Genome Studies Center of the Clinical Hospital of the University of Sao Paulo (USP) in an article published in the North American magazine Annals of Neurology
As yet it is unknown on which gene the mutation occurs that causes the disorder
but the scientists have analyzed DNA samples of 74 of the town’s inhabitants
and the results of the study indicate that the SPOAN gene can be found in the region of chromosome 11
The problem is that there exist at least 143 genes in this region
almost one hundred genes are candidates for causing the disorder
“We’re mapping the gene region or district where it is found”
the coordinator of the work on the new disorder
who heads up the Human Genome Studies Center
Innovation and Diffusion Centers (Cepid) funded through FAPESP
the gene linked to the syndrome.” With luck
the USP team hopes to have isolated the gene and identified the mutation that causes SPOAN
the scientists are going to make a pre-natal test capable of detecting the presence of the mutation in babies still in gestation and identify the heterozygote individuals of this genetic anomaly (healthy people
but who could have children with this disorder)
“Up until now there is not a single neurological disorder associated with genes in this region of chromosome 11”
says the doctorate student Lucia Inês Macedo-Souza
given the responsibility of finding the “house” where the molecular base of SPOAN is found
one is not simply talking of the inhabitants of Serrinha
Up until now the scientists have identified 26 people living with SPOAN of whom 17 are women and 9 are men
All of the individuals affected are white Caucasians
probably of Portuguese or perhaps Dutch descent
The majority still live in their native town and all of them are descendants of related couples
“We examined patients of various ages with the syndrome
the main person responsible for the unprecedented pathology discovery
who is receiving a post-doctoral grant from FAPESP
the illness in itself is not fatal and maintains the thinking capacity of the patients intact
It does not bring about mental retardation
But its effects on the quality of life of those affected
Above all in a rural population and one short of health services such as Serrinha dos Pintos
the origin of the illness to be hereditary syphilis of an ancient and ancestral womenizer that has been spread through family blood (see chart on page 42)
Here there is no physiotherapy service to minimize the problems of posture coming from the paraplegia associated with the illness and the victims of the syndrome live secluded from day to day happenings
totally dependent on the care of their family
nobody takes medicine to reduce the rigidity and the weakening of legs and arms
With the interminable energy that only children appear to have
the girl manages to get about with the help of a walker on wheels
SPOAN classified itself among the heredity recessive autosomal disorders
Men and women have the same probability of presenting the pathology
in spite of the number of cases known in Serrinha being greater among the female sex
A person will only develop SPOAN if the two copies of the as yet unknown gene associated with the syndrome
one coming from the father and the other from the mother
carry the mutation that leads to the health problem
Therefore the parents of a patient with SPOAN are necessarily heterozygotes
They are carriers of the gene in only one of the two copies of the gene
But they can transmit it to their offspring
Sons and daughters of heterozygotes participate involuntarily in a game of biological Russian roulette
of inheriting the two copies of the gene with the mutation; 50% risk of only being a carrier of the mutation in one of the gene copies; and 25% risk of not being a carrier of having no alteration in the two copies of the SPOAN gene
being healthy and incapable of passing on the mutation
“One in every 250 of the Serrinha population has the illness and one in every nine is a heterozygote for this condition”
who carried out the clinical and neurological description of the SPOAN symptoms
Trembling eyes During the first months of life
the recently born attacked by the illness do not show any clinical symptom of SPOAN
perceptible only to those who have had a history of the illness in the family: the children show “trembling eyes”
These abnormal and involuntary movements of the ocular globe
resulting from the congenital atrophy of the optical nerve
reduce the field of vision of those effected
To this ocular malfunction the doctors have given the name of nystagmus
“They manage to see the fingers of a hand at a maximum distance of two meters”
fifty seven year old Maria Inês de Queiroz had six children
of whom three died while still babies and three are alive
who for most of the day are looked after their healthy sister
The mother of the house remembers having seen the tremor in the eyes of one of her sons when he was four months old
who sold clothes and lived for a decade in the city of Sao Paulo
Her memories of life in the city are not of the best
“I spent ten years going from one doctor to the next
There was a pediatrician who told me that Marquinhos was healthy – and that I was the sick one”
Marquinhos is the endearing name that family and friends use when referring to the youngest in the family
like his thirty-nine year-old older brother
Probably the doctors thought that Marquinhos was normal because the boy walked until he was ten years old
The only thing was that he walked with difficulty and his mother knew that
Similar stories are not rare among the Serrinha families who have relatives with the new syndrome
among the people who have lived with the SPOAN sick
A progressive spastic paraparesis of the lower and upper limbs – difficult terms of the medical language that mean the continuous stiffening and weakening of the legs and arms – is one of the clinical signatures of the syndrome
Another is progressive lesions of the motor and sensorial neurons
damage that further diminishes body movements and reflexes
in spite of not managing to move the legs spontaneously
almost all of the patients react abruptly when they hear unexpected sounds: they produce involuntary contractions in the muscles of the lower limbs
Some inhabitants of the town say that certain children who were affected had already been born more or less “unsteady”
without a lot of firmness to sit up or even to crawl
But even these sick children generally more precociously fragile
The paralysis normally reaches the arms a short time later
at the end of adolescence or around twenty years of age
who had never been given any form of physiotherapy
“I had put on high heeled shoes to help Sarinha to walk”
a sixty-seven-year-old widow whose husband
“She walked almost without falling until she was eight years of age” When a child
and the use of the high heeled shoes had serves her as support
To meet up with Dona Loló in the small Rio Grande de Norte town is easy
located at the side of an Evangelical church
almost at the exit of the town in the direction of Martins
the neighboring municipality from which Serrinha dos Pintos separated in 1993
sitting next to her daughters: Sara and Eda
both with SPOAN and in their wheel chairs; Tranquilina
her granddaughter who has psychiatric problems and
does not stay long in any one place; and Iza
the only one of her five daughters without health problems
died of cerebral aneurism in 1999 when she was 46 years old
who had attended school until the old six grade level and knows how to read and write
I would have tried to forget Francisco and find somebody else”
says the zealous mother without much conviction
These days Dona Loló gets up at 5:30 in the morning to make breakfast and wash and cloth her sick daughters
who is in the most delicate condition and who awakens with tremors typical of the abstinence syndrome
Eda takes another dose of the tranquilizer and Sara
Dona Loló guarantees that she herself had already given up this habit
although she did not deny that she returns to taking the tranquilizer on more difficult days
“The girls become nervous for any problem”
Nervous is an adjective often used by the families of the victims of SPOAN in order to describe the behavior of the sick
It’ impossible to know since when patients
families and other people in the town have been consuming medicines that are controlled
That the practice is of long standing and institutionalized
“We have 345 people registered at the city hall to receive
says the pedagogue and ex-community agent José Antonio Queiroz
today Serrinha’s municipal secretary of health
This is almost 10% of the local population
Some townsfolk say that the number of tranquilizer users is
Fernandes and Dias family names Situated in a region of mountains of modest size
Serrinha dos Pintos has a pleasant climate for a place that the maps locate in the interior of the Northeast Caatinga (shrubland) with an average temperature lower than 25°C
In spite of the almost 400 kilometers that separate it from Natal
From the state capital one can arrive in this little known piece of Rio Grande do Norte by way of paved roads and potholes are not a problem during the journey
when it was still a part of its neighbor Martins
From the initial inhabitants of this extensive rural property
practically all of the current population are descendants with Queiroz
the vegetation at this time of the year is abundant and the plants show hues of green normally not associated by the citizens of the south to a semi-arid area
But its town center is clean and the streets are paved with stones
Probably in the backland small farms the situation may well be more precarious
says the teacher Leidmar Fernandes de Queiroz
a twenty-year old girl with SPOAN and with a beautiful smile
For the hospitalized and humble people of Serrinha
from whose houses one does not leave without having taken a cup of coffee or having tried a corn cake or piece of salted meat
They plant corn and beans and remove the nuts from the cashew tree
there is the alternative of getting a job at the city hall
There are no banks in the town and the closest bank branch is in Martins
The pensions of the oldest citizens and the money coming from federal programs such as Family Grant ( Bolsa Família)
are also important sources of family income
those handicapped with SPOAN (and other pathologies) have been pensioned off and therefore also help to reinforce the household income
But the most of the city revenues do not come from some local economic activity
It comes from a federal grant known as the Municipalities Participation Fund
with an annual value that runs to about R$ 2 million
In the 2003 registers of the National Traffic Department there are around 300 vehicles with the town’s number plate
and almost two thirds of them are motorcycles
the motorcycle stand out in the local countryside
Serrinha has been able to count upon a hospital
The building of the Mista Terezinha Maria de Jesus unit
planned to be a hybrid of hospital and health clinic
was ready in November last and is partially in operation
it is underused and the town doesn’t have the money to make it work completely
The reason: built with federal cash contrived with the support of a Rio Grande de Norte politician of some influence in Brasilia
according to the municipal secretary of health
was conceived for a town of 20,000 inhabitants
five times greater that the local population
it’s a lot of nuts for a small cashew tree like Serrinha
Almost all of its most sophisticated equipment such as the X-ray machine
The present electrical circuit for the building cannot support the equipment
The majority of the medical rooms are empty
“It’s going to be difficult for us to make all of the hospital operational”
the municipal secretary of health states frankly
One cannot say that a mixed unit does not work because two general clinical doctors and two dentists provide service during the week in the ample sized building
also frequented by the personnel of the health clinic and by a cardiologist who fortnightly attends to the town’s citizens
the townsfolk have to fall back on the services of the neighboring towns
Every fortnight a van with patients sets out for the state capital
A “family problem” If the researchers no longer have any doubts that the SPOAN syndrome is a recessive genetic disorder
inherited by some offspring of consanguineous marriages of Serrinha dos Pintos
the parents of the sick still do not think that way
They attribute the genesis of all of the cases of the syndrome to a “family problem” — to hypothetical hereditary syphilis that had attacked them some 150 years ago
and spread through their blood to their descendents
“My grandparents told me that the problem came from the Days of the Cattle Water Hole”
tells sixty-five-year old Laurita Firmino de Queiroz
is pointed to as the depository of the origin of the physically handicapped
The parents of those affected by SPOAN also suggest that their children had only began to have greater difficulties of movement after having been the victim of some traumatic event in their childhood
Dona Laurita remembered that her 43-year-old son
attempting to explain his very own difficulty of movement
the thesis that family blood could be the agent of the hereditary transmission of an illness such as SPOAN could be valid during the 19th century
with the advance of science this idea can no longer be told
as science attributes the cause of the pathology to a genetic mutation
still persists in the minds of many people
above all in a locality of simple people such as Serrinha
“One of our challenges is to explain to the town’s population
who in August will launch a book with respect to how laypersons understand the concepts of genetic heritage
“The people need to understand the significance of being a heterozygote for an illness such as SPOAN and also which are the repercussions of the eventual development of a pre-natal test capable of identifying

"Soybeans don't come with a brand."Cotrisal did not respond to emailed requests for further comment
Cotrijal said it had not bought grains from farmers leasing lands in Serrinha and that it does not operate in the area.Over the years
global agricultural companies have made assurances about respecting land rights and human rights
highlighting their attention to Indigenous communities in annual sustainability statements.ADM made no mention of Indigenous rights or land disputes in its most recent corporate sustainability report last year
the company noted the pervasiveness of land disputes in South America and said that it is not directly implicated in any land disputes
The 2022 report did not discuss cultivation on Indigenous reserves. In an email to Reuters
ADM said it had investigated the news agency's findings and found no evidence that the soy it purchased had been raised on lands leased on the Nonoai and Serrinha reservations."We do not source any grains from Indigenous territories in the Rio Grande do Sul region," Jackie Anderson
buying from large farmer cooperatives in southern Brazil can obscure the origin of grains
according to six lawsuits filed between 2008 and 2022 by federal prosecutors on behalf of the tribes
At least two of the cases are ongoing.Bunge
COFCO and Louis Dreyfus did not respond to requests for comment and referred questions to the national soy industry group Abiove."Cotrijal and Cotrisal declared to us they don't buy grains produced on the reservations of Nonoai and Serrinha," Abiove said in an email.Abiove said its members are pushing the cooperatives to ensure their supply chains conform with laws and contractual obligations against buying grains from protected territories.Andre Nassar
said in a separate statement that traders can "stop all purchases" from a cooperative if it becomes clear that it is sourcing soy from reservations.Nassar said traders can also ask cooperatives for assurances that the soybeans were raised by members of the Indigenous community – and not leased to third parties.Abiove did not respond to Reuters' questions on whether its members ever turned down a purchase from Cotrisal or Cotrijal

Cotrijal and other cooperatives.Cotrisal and Cotrijal did not respond to requests for comment on the seizures. In a July 2022 decision ordering measures to stop the practice
Federal Judge Diogo Edele Pimentel said private leasing of lands in the Nonoai territory was a major source of division."It is a nefarious practice of private appropriation of a public good

There are farm cooperatives all around the Indigenous territories
and other large cooperatives which buy any quantity of soy

11 members of the Serrinha community filed a civil lawsuit in the federal court of Carazinho
accusing their chief Claudino of controlling the territory's soy trade to enrich his family. The 2021 lawsuit reviewed by Reuters said Claudino has crushed dissent with "violence
oppression and human rights violations."In a telephone interview
Claudino said his opponents spread lies about his leadership and that most of the community supports him
The lawsuit is ongoing.Claudino remains under investigation - but has not been charged - in connection with a double homicide in Serrinha in 2021
which police and local community members link to land and power disputes fueled by the soy trade
He denies involvement in the killings. At least 30 families who objected publicly to Claudino's involvement in the soy trade have left the reservation since October 2021
Several had their homes looted and ransacked
according to three of the victims and a 2022 report by the federal human rights commission
which connected the violence to the land leases.Claudino said only a dozen families left the reservation in recent years
some of whom have returned."Some are back already
But I'm not going to let people come here and make trouble for me again," he said.Reporting by Ana Mano in Passo Fundo and Sao Paulo; Editing by Brad Haynes and Suzanne Goldenberg

Under-17 Men’s National Team fell to the Netherlands
in its final Group D match of the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup on Saturday night at Estádio da Serrinha
the USA finished fourth in the group and will not advance to the knockout stage of the tournament
The match was evenly played for large portions of the first half
white and blue in the second after going down a goal just before the break
Netherlands forward Santje Hanson had a hand in three goals – scoring the first two and assisting on Mohamed Taabouni’s tally before Jayden Braaf closed out the scoring late
The USA twice were inches from taking the lead within the first ten minutes of the game
right back Joe Scally pushed down the line and sent a driven cross into the box
Gio Reyna made an aggressive run towards the ball and sent a glancing
flicked header to the back post that went inches wide of goal
the Netherlands defense headed away a USA corner that fell to the feet of Adam Saldana just outside the box
Saldana hit a low shot through the defense that also went just wide of goal
held strong and started to create their own chances
The breakthrough came just before the half when Hansen danced around at the top of the box before cutting to his left and tucking a shot just past the outstretched diving attempt by U.S
goalkeeper Chituru Odunze and into the near post
The USA made two changes to start the second half and were more aggressive offensively right off the whistle
it was Jansen who opened the second-half scoring with a first-time shot from inside the box
taking a ball to the end line before finding Taabouni
Hansen again went at the USA defense and drew a penalty kick after being clipped by Bryang Kayo
Kenneth Taylor stepped up to shoot but was denied by a diving save from Odunze
The Netherlands finished the scoring in the dying minutes
with Jayden Braaf netting one from close range
Hansen took an innocent ball on the top of the right side of the box and cut to his left past two U.S
defenders before shooting low to the near post
Goalkeeper Chituru Odunze dove to his left and got a slight touch but it wasn’t enough to prevent the opening goal
A Dutch player advanced the ball to the USA end line on the left side before sending a cross through the defense back to the penalty mark
where Hansen hit a one-time shot past Odunze
Hansen took the ball towards the right U.S
post before touching a short pass back to the corner of the six-yard box
where Mohamed Taabouni beat a USA defender to put it away
Bannis entered the USA box right of the arc and after drawing a defender
sent a square pass to the center where an unmarked Braaf took one touch to his right before shooting past Odunze
11th minute: A Dutch forward did well to create separation from the U.S
defense at the top of the left side of the box before hitting a low
hard shot that forced Odunze to dive to his left for the save
NED – Sontje Hansen (Naci Unuvar) 42nd minute
NED – Sontje Hansen (Anass Salah Eddine) 51
NED – Mohamed Taabouni (Sontje Hansen) 70
NED – Jayden Braff (Naoufal Bannis) 86

Echoing comments made by President Joe Biden during a bilateral meeting with Bolsonaro last month
the embassy said in a statement late Tuesday that the US “trusts in the strength” of Brazil’s democratic institutions
The recent release of videos showing women subjected to a degrading act of violence
with their hair forcibly shaved in the Serrinha community in Rio de Janeiro’s North Zone
has sparked a necessary debate about the power dynamics perpetuating gender oppression in the favelas
Similar practices have occurred in other historical contexts
when women who had relationships with German soldiers were publicly humiliated with the same type of punishment.[1] These practices reflect the intersection of social control exercised by Illegal Armed Groups (IAGs)[2] and the structural machismo that dominates urban violence
they expose power dynamics that normalize oppression against women in these territories
Criminal Governance and Gender-Based Violence
Criminal governance practices are structured to maintain territorial control and discipline bodies and behaviors
as discussed by Júlia Quirino in her dissertation “Crime Panopticon,”[3] draws on Michel Foucault’s reflections on biopolitics
describing how power regulates the lives and behaviors of individuals
In territories controlled by drug trafficking
blending elements of sovereign and disciplinary control
It employs tactics designed to maintain internal order
often rooted in patriarchal norms that perpetuate the marginalization of women
The case in question involves the so-called ‘trafficking tribunal’ in which gang leaders judge and punish those who violate their rules
are frequent targets of punishments exploiting their physical and social vulnerabilities
This dynamic reflects a patriarchy that limits women’s choices and reinforces their subjugation
The act of forcibly shaving a woman’s hair symbolizes not only submission but also an attempt to publicly dehumanize them as a tool of oppression
reinforcing the hegemonic masculinity that dominates these spaces
Shaving a woman’s head as punishment for alleged betrayal or gossip is an extreme manifestation of machismo and misogyny
This form of gender-based violence reflects not only the internal dynamics of IAGs but also broader structural issues
Practices like these demonstrate how women are often treated as the “property” of men
subject to imposed norms that limit their autonomy and freedom
IAGs regulate not only the economic activities and flow of goods within their territories but also the individual choices of residents
Women in Drug Trafficking: The “Pink Belt”
women in communities controlled by Illegal Armed Groups (IAGs) have been relegated to passive or supportive roles
This dynamic reflects not only gender oppression but also the hierarchical structures imposed by these groups
which employ disciplinary practices to legitimize their authority within the community
there has been a rise in female participation in leadership roles
although still limited compared to male representation.[5] Despite this increase
women’s involvement in leadership positions in trafficking remains heavily shaped by gender inequality
Data from the National Secretariat of Penal Policies (2022) reveal that 54% of incarcerated women in Brazil were arrested for drug-related offenses
compared to 27.65% of men.[6] These figures highlight the disproportionate impact of criminalization on women
often involved in lower-profile activities within criminal organizations
The expression “Pink Belt” (“Faixa Rosa”) refers to women directly involved in drug trafficking
The term alludes to the sling used to hold weapons
is used to describe men involved in drug trafficking who carry rifles
while “black” evokes associations with skill and danger
Just as a black belt in martial arts symbolizes mastery
the term conveys an image of armed men as highly skilled and dangerous combatants within criminal organizations
“calicas” (“calicos”) represent a different group: women not directly involved in trafficking but connected to the local culture
They attend funk parties and maintain relationships with members of armed groups (IAG)
known as “Hello Kitty,” is a prominent example of female leadership in drug trafficking.[7] Described as “beloved,” “vain,” yet also “courageous” and “violent,” she challenged stereotypes associating women in crime with masculinization
The Pink Belt often maintain an appearance considered “feminine,” personalizing weapons with vibrant colors and shiny adornments while adopting active roles in a male-dominated and conflict-ridden environment
Another striking case is that of Gabrielly Pantoja Machado
known as “Faixa Rosa.” Killed in 2023 during a police operation
she served as a bodyguard for Leonardo Costa Araújo
known as “Pará,” an uncommon role for women in such a high-risk environment
reaffirming her influence within the Comando Vermelho (Red Command) and breaking stereotypes associated with passive female roles
These cases highlight the complex gender dynamics within Illegal Armed Groups (IAGs)
While they challenge the traditionally submissive roles of women in these contexts
these figures also reveal how gender inequality persists
even when women occupy leadership positions
the media visibility of these women raises questions about how they are represented
either perpetuating or challenging narratives that link gender
The Responsibility of the State and Society
Although these practices are carried out by IAGs
The absence of effective public policies to ensure women’s safety and rights creates a vacuum filled by groups like the Red Command
the stigmatization of women in these communities as “accomplices” or “property” of traffickers reinforces narratives of blame that hinder social mobilization in defense of their rights
Society must break away from this reductionist perspective and recognize that women are often victims of multiple forms of systemic violence
Overcoming this cycle of violence requires a collective effort that goes beyond punishing those responsible
It is essential to implement policies promoting gender education
and social inclusion for women in vulnerable territories
Only by addressing the structural roots of this violence
can we construct a scenario where such practices no longer find a place to exist
The case of women with shaved heads serves as a stark reminder of the urgency to rethink power dynamics perpetuating gender inequality
Let this tragic episode act as a catalyst for a deeper debate about women’s rights across all spheres of society

Court documents show that the suit, filed on 1 June by the labour prosecutor’s office, alleges that JBS discriminated against these workers as the COVID-19 pandemic spread rapidly through Brazil
The announcement caused JBS shares to fall 1.37 percent in late-afternoon trading
"[The workers] were dismissed in a critical period
when the return to the labour market is unlikely until the pandemic is controlled," Labour Prosecutor Edson Rodrigues Junior said
The goal of the prosecutor's office is to force JBS to re-hire the indigenous workers
The prosecutor is also seeking at least 10 million reais ($1.9 million) in fines and damages
The dismissed employees of the Kaingang tribe commuted from the Serrinha indigenous land
where there were at least two confirmed cases of COVID-19
JBS confirmed dismissing 40 indigenous workers from its Seara chicken-slaughtering plant
but said the decision came after the company discontinued a bus service that brought the workers to the plant every day
JBS gave no reason for discontinuing the bus service and denied any discrimination
a lawyer representing the dismissed workers
told Reuters by telephone the two people sick with COVID-19 in the Serrinha indigenous land did not work for JBS
The lawyer said the dismissed JBS workers earned a net 1,200 reais ($230.10) per month and were "surprised" when they learned they had been fired
At least one fired indigenous worker was a pregnant woman
adding all women employees in such a condition were placed on leave
JBS noted the dismissed workers were paid in full what they were entitled to and added that the plant in the town of Seara employs 3,700 people
including 200 from indigenous communities in surrounding areas
The indigenous workers at the plant were preemptively placed on leave as required by law to protect them amid the pandemic
The company said the workers fired on 6 May travelled 300 kilometers every day to get to the plant on transportation arranged by the company

School cafeterias in Brazil are transitioning to vegan menus, the Humane Society International (HSI) has announced
The transition will be seen in four cities and will be completed by 2019
The schools are participating in a new project, “Escola Sustentável”, launched in partnership with HSI
is taking place in the country due to a growing awareness of the environmental impact of meat production
as well as the negative effect it can have on human health
and Biritinga in Bahia are the four northeastern cities making history with the new programme
HSI has been working closely with the participating schools
running culinary training classes for cafeteria staff to help with the transition
and eggs will be cut from menus by a quarter each semester until the ingredients in every dish served are locally sourced from nearby farms
“Providing our school districts with plant-based meals will help save environmental and public financial resources
and build a fair world for the animals,” Leticia Baird
Brazilian public prosecutor for the environment in the state of Bahia
added: “We applaud the cities of Serrinha
and Biritinga for becoming the world’s first school districts to commit to going 100 percent plant-based
It’s an honor to have worked with city authorities
nutritionists and school cooks on the adoption and implementation of this initiative
and we’re excited to continue working closely with them to ensure the success of this program.”
This is not the first time cities in the country have placed plant-based meal plans in school cafeterias. Last summer, Várzea Grande, Cuiabá, and Sao Gonςalo introduced a new conscious eating program for children
The cities schools pledged to go meat and dairy-free for one day out of each week
resulting in 5 million more vegan meals to be served each year in the nation

Disease identified in the State of Rio Grande do Norte deforms hands and feet
paulo otto and silvana santosHand with six fingers: some of the defects caused by the syndromepaulo otto and silvana santos
the researcher identified another genetic disease not described in medical literature
identified in six members of a family; the syndrome’s main characteristic is congenital malformation
the long bone located on the side of the leg
who grows to a maximum height of 1.50 meters
the patient may have missing fingers or additional fingers and the nails have tiny defects
A description of the syndrome was published in the December 15 issue of the American Journal of Medical Genetics
Other degenerative diseases cause some of the characteristics provoked by the Riacho de Santana syndrome
the clinical condition identified in the second town
which also has a population of 4.300 inhabitants
The technical name of this disease is agenesis/hypoplasia of the fibula associated with oligodactylous syndrome and other defects
“This disease differs from other diseases because of tiny details,” says physician and geneticist Paulo Otto
who provided the clinical description of the syndrome and co-authored the referred article
“But we immediately suspected that this was something new.” The syndrome’s effects do not alter the afflicted person’s cognitive ability
“The patients are normal in this respect,” says Silvana
currently at the State University of Paraíba/UEPB
the patients lead relatively normal lives and adapt to their limitations
Although the tradition of marrying blood relatives is still maintained in Riacho de Santana
the form of the syndrome’s hereditary transmission is unknown
Neither do researchers know whether the syndrome is associated with such marriages
The malformations are caused by a simple genetic defect
which spread to the members of the affected family (four siblings and a cousin
the most likely hypothesis is that this a dominant autosomic syndrome
then any child who inherits one copy of the mutated gene will manifest the syndrome
because otherwise it would have been found elsewhere,” says Silvana
With funding from the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico/CNPq [national scientific and technological development council] and the help of colleagues from other universities
the researcher traveled to cities in the Northeast of Brazil with a significant population of physically disabled people and a high number of blood marriages in order to study the incidence of genetic problems
