A Maltese missionary in Brazil died when he was hit by a motorcycle while crossing the road to his church for evening services on Monday
Fr Carmel Bezzina lost his life in Londrina
He did not die on impact but was rushed to Santa Casa Hospital
Fr Bezzina lost a lot of blood and passed away following surgical intervention
Fr Bezzina left for Brazil as a missionary in 1965 together with Fr Paul Brincat of Birkirkara
nuns and the laity of the parishes he served and so wisely led to God are in deep consternation," he said
adding he had not seen his missionary friend in a while
"There would have been extreme confusion on the busy road where he lives and where his church Maria Auxilia Dora is situated
there are no lights and many accidents happen in the area."
Fr Bezzina is said to have been half way across the road and was waiting in the middle to cross over to the other side when a speeding motorcycle ran him over
His death was reported on the front page of the newspaper Folha de Londrina
Fr Bezzina studied theology in the seminary Rainha dos Apóstolos in Curitiba
He had been invited by the late Dom Geraldo Fernandes in the 1960s to go to Brazil to work as a missionary
His parish was Nossa Senhora Maria Auxiliadora in downtown Londrina where he served for the past 10 years
