It was standing room only at Daniela Soledade’s Amazon Soul
The show started at 8pm but by 7:30pm all the seats were taken
but it was clear that there were not going to be enough
The upbeat yet relaxed tone was set from the very first minute of the show as an extended groovy beat was played and Soledade and the rest of the band danced through the crowd to take the stage
Beaming, Soledade began singing and dancing barefoot on the carpeted stage. There is something so liberating about watching a carefree doing their thing barefoot. (Like recent WMNF performer Keller Williams)
arranger and guitarist (an occasional percussionist) Nate Najar as well Patrick Bettison on keyboards and harmonica
Rounding out the group was legendary Brazilian drummer Claudio Infante, who came from Brazil to play with Soledad, as documented by our friends at Creative Loafing
Instead of light cocktail bossa nova to hum along too to
tight rhythms provided energy to get people up and dancing with their hands in the air
For the first few songs the crowd was surprisingly chatty
This was not the reserved atmosphere of the Palladium
the audience was treated to a rockin’ medley of George Harrison’s “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) and Lenny Kravitz’ “It Ain’t Over ’til It’s Over” connected by a killer sax solo by guest Butch Thomas
that she had heard playing guitar and fallen in love with
The show contained Soledad originals as well as Brazilian standards
which more often than not turned into a call and response with the crowd nearly matching the PA system for volume
More than once I felt like I was the only one in the building that didn’t know the words (which was OK)
Throughout the evening Najar was wearing a black shirt with white block letters that said “PARIS LONDON TOKYO ST
Soledade described how although born and raised in Rio de Janeir but moved to St
Saying she has fallen so in love with the city that she recently wrote St
(watch home recording of below) Let’s hope it becomes a concert standard or the official Song of the City
Daniela Soledade has direct lineage to the founding of bossa nova. Her grandfather, Paulo Soledade composed popular song with renowned Bossa Nova founders Antônio Carlos Jobim, Baden Powell, and others. She performed his song “Circo da Vida (Circus of Life)” for the crowd. Studio version here
The show concluded with a thundering encore with Najar wailing on electric(!) guitar
and ecstatic cheering and dancing on the floor
Followed by chants of “one more encore
while fans milled around to get pictures with Soledade and wait for her to autograph the vinyl records and other merch that they purchased
concert goers extended Daniela Soledade’s Amazon Soul with laughing
Soledad has an album set to drop this spring called “Deco Tropical”. You can find out more at https://danielasoledade.com/

Bossa Nova queen and international recording star Daniela Soledade and partner
jazz guitarist and producer Nate Najar make music as easily as others make coffee
they spent time in Brazil visiting friends and working in studio
and released a new single (John Moody’s “Mood For Love”)
the two are rehearsing for the upcoming show “Brazilian Dream” at The Palladium Sept
Her band and guest artists include Patrick Bettison on keyboards and harmonica
The legendary Brazilian drummer Claudio Infante and guitarist Nate Najar are also a part of the show
in part inspired by Carnival,” says Soledade
“‘Brazilian Dream’ is more than just a journey to Brazil; it’s a fusion of cultures and sounds
seamlessly blending the soulful rhythms of Brazil with the vibrant energy of North America.”
The Gabber Newspaper covers live theater and art across South Pinellas and
Soledade’s musical passion is a mélange of authentic bossa nova
Her contemporary interpretations make her a “new” sound of bossa nova
Soledade’s family’s bossa nova roots are deep
Her grandfather Paulo Soledade composed plenty of popular songs
He worked alongside bossa nova founders Antônio Carlos Jobim
Soledade observed and performed with her father
and producer Paulinho Soledade at the top recording studios in Rio de Janeiro
But to paraphrase an old saying: you can take the girl out of Brazil
“Music has been my driving force – both Brazilian and jazz (I love Charlie Byrd) and still inspires me daily,” said Soledade
“I grew up in this environment of studios and bohemian artists
with musician friends and family playing different styles and rhythms all the time… Brazil also has a lot of different rhythms that are influenced by native Indians and Africans and Europeans
That’s the inspiration for Brazilian Dream and for my song ‘Amazon Farewell’.”
Soledade released her debut album A Moment of You
It featured songs in English and Portuguese that raved reviews
Downbeat Magazine called it “a careful curation of compositions… each of them contributing the perfect nuanced sound
harmonious melodies and poetic rhythms while injecting the music with much needed freshness.”
Soledade has worked with many famous Brazilian musicians including bossa nova pioneer Roberto Menescal and Antonio Adolfo.
Soledade teamed up with Najar to livestream “Love & Bossa Nova,” a weekly duo concert series. Jazz Times toasted Soledade’s “exquisite vocals” and Najar’s “masterful” guitar playing
and they’re still creating beautiful music

she's spearheading bossa nova's next generation
North American jazz fans are just starting to learn the name Daniela Soledade, but in Brazil, where she was born and raised through her early teens, the family moniker echoes across some eight decades of musical creation. On her second album, Pretty World (Blue Line)
bossa nova-inspired vocalist gracefully walks a high wire
balancing her need to define herself as an artist and her desire to celebrate a brilliant and enduring legacy
Before moving to Florida at the age of 14 with her mother
Soledade spent a good deal of her free time in rehearsals and recording studios with her father
He absorbed the innovative bossa nova sound as a child running around Rio’s Zum-Zum Club
a proving group for emerging stars opened and run by his father
songwriter and Antônio Carlos Jobim confederate Paulino Soledade
and went on to create the choreography for their first epochal collaboration Orfeu da Conceição
the 1956 stage production that eventually became Marcel Camus’ Academy Award-winning
Recorded mostly in Rio with Daniela’s father on bass and his longtime musical compatriot Claudio Infante on drums
exploring a program of songs vividly illustrating that the Soledade family has thrived not in solitude but in a spectacularly creative community
the thrill wasn’t just working with her father “and his friend from their teenage years,” she said
“It was going into the studio with him and digging deeper in my grandfather’s work
realizing he left a huge contribution to Brazilian music
have gotten into contact and become mentors to me.”
Where her 2019 debut album, A Moment of You
introduced Soledade as a singer fluent in the supple pulse of bossa nova
starting with the title-track opener by great Brazilian jazz pianist Antonio Adolfo (originally “Sa Marina” but rechristened with English lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman)
offering a fresh new take on his international hit
Connecting the day before he returned to the U.S.
“I’ve been a fan and friend of your family for 40 years.”
She ended up writing a song with another family friend
84-year-old bossa nova icon Roberto Menescal
supplying the Portuguese lyric to his tune “Como É Gostoso Sonhar,” though she had to clear up some understandable confusion
“At first he thought my grandfather was my dad,” she said
“He was telling me stories about playing in the Zum-Zum Club every night for four years
When he agreed to make a video for the song with me it was so wonderful because he lives on a little island and to get there you have to take a little boat
which of course is [the title of] his best-known recording
she works closely with guitarist/arranger Nate Najar
who has deep family ties to Brazil himself
contributes some glowing flugelhorn work on the couple’s original “Beijo No Arpoador,” while Harry Allen echoes an earlier tenor saxophonist with a flair for bossa nova on their arching love song “Nothing Compares.” The album closes with her a cappella rendition of the Jobim/De Moraes standard “Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar.” It might seem like she’s overly exposed
but anyone who’s been to a performance populated by Brazilians will recognize the track as an invitation to sing along
she’s finding her own way with some consummate company

Pete nightclub breathlessly advertised an upcoming concert performance this way: BOSSA NOVA QUEEN DANIELA SOLEDADE
“That caught me off guard,” laughs the Brazilian-born singer
Bossa nova combines airy acoustic guitar with intimate vocals – melodic and breezy
especially when it’s sung in the original Portuguese
who began performing in the bay area five years ago
but she’s certainly the real deal in bossa nova circles
co-wrote with musical pioneers Antonio Carlos Jobim
Daniela Soledade’s debut album displays her mastery of classic samba and bossa nova … and highlighting the pristine clarity of her vocals
Soledade’s musical (and otherwise) partner is St
samba (a little more rhythmically intense Brazilian music) and jazz
they’ve traveled extensively throughout the South; in June
they performed in Rio de Janeiro (where they were joined by Paulinho) and recently returned from a sold-out run of dates in California
for a concert Soledade has named Deco Tropical
“We call it ‘a samba soul journey to paradise,’ because it brings the samba and the bossa nova
but now we’ve also added a soul component to it,” she explains
“So the repertoire is different; it’s a brand new show.”
is “full of surprises.” Along with bossa nova and samba
it will explore the two musicians’ earliest rhythm and blues influences
“Because a lot of the same people come to see us at different times
I like to mix things up,” Soledade explains
“I don’t like to play the same show over and over again – I want everybody to continue to be engaged
and I want them to hear something new every time they come out.”
Joining Soledade and Najar will be bassist Joe Porter and pianist Patrick Bettison
members of the couple’s regular bay area band
Brazilian musicians Claudio Infante (drums) and Zé Luis (flute and saxophone) will round out the ranks
“These two guys used to be in a band with my dad
when they were in their early 20s,” Soledade reports
“This is really cool ‘cause they’re family.” This week’s band also includes backup singers Rebecca Pearl
they’ll all be recording Soledade’s third album (following A Moment of You and Pretty World)
this new collection is being produced by Najar
He’s brilliant in every way because he always has the broad view
Nate is probably the single most important component of this operation.”
Soledade says she never takes the support she receives from bay area audiences for granted
coming from Rio with the family of musicians that I have
It’s a lot of fun to give continuation to this heritage

Petersburg bossa singer/songwriter Daniela Soledade
is – like the most affecting Brazilian bossa nova music – gentle
supple and evocative of summer breezes and tropical love affairs
moved to the Tampa Bay area when she was 16
Pretty World is several steps ahead of its predecessor
2019’s (also delightful) A Moment of You
Downbeat magazine praised her “mastery of the form” and “the pristine clarity of her vocals.”
For Soledade and her partner in both life and music
the crazy first year of the pandemic meant zero live gigs
So they livestreamed a weekly concert from their home in downtown St

there’s a whole lot of growth both technically and in terms of presence
the breezy and confident songs on Pretty World were recorded in a studio in the Copacabana neighborhood in Rio’s South Zone
with Brazilian musicians including Soledade’s father
“This album is the extension of my family’s legacy,” says Soledade
“It was very special to have my father playing bass on it; and he’s been playing with the drummer since he was a teenager
That’s one of the main reasons to go to Brazil to get it done
“And so it was nice to have recorded it in Copacabana
We recorded in the very same neighborhood where my grandfather had his nightclub
which was the incubator for the very first bossa nova shows.”
who composed with bossa nova founders Antônio Carlos Jobim
“It’s special to me to feel like I am continuing this family tradition
Najar – who produced the album – played guitar and cavaquinho; St

Harry Allen on tenor sax and Gulfport’s Gumbi Ortiz on percussion

“It was such a serendipitous moment when I met Nate
because we both love this music,” Soledade says

Because Nate understands the aesthetic and the essence of this music like no one I’ve ever met

A Maui pioneer of paddle-in surfing at Peʻahi and longtime Hawaiian Canoe Club paddler Marcio Freire died Thursday while riding big waves in Nazaré on the central coast of Portugal
Freire, 47, was among three Brazilian surfers known as “Mad Dogs” in the 2016 documentary that featured tow-in and paddle-in surfing legends at Maui’s Peʻahi
Hāʻiku resident and family spokesman Yuri Soledade said Freire was on vacation with his family in Portugal when he went out at Nazaré this week to surf 40- to 50-foot faces
Freire caught his second wave a little too deep and the wave swallowed him
The surfer disappeared for about 30 minutes
By the time jet-skis found his body and brought him to the beach
attempts to revive Freire were unsuccessful
“Over the years we surfed much bigger waves,” Soledade told Maui Now on Friday
“Unfortunately it is one of those things you can’t explain what happened
The only thing that comforts me is knowing he passed away doing what he loved.”
The news of Freire’s death sent shockwaves through Maui’s surfing and paddling communities Friday
“It’s tragic we lost such an amazing human,” accomplished big-wave surfer and Maui native Shaun Walsh said
“It’s affecting a lot of people in the community
Walsh said Freire is one of the pioneers of paddle-in surfing at Peʻahi who helped shape much of what local big-wave surfing has become today
Longtime Hawaiian Canoe Club paddling coach Paul “Kauhane” Luʻuwai
said Freire was a good athlete and an even better human being
an owner of Paia Fish Market and Nuka restaurants
said he and Freire grew up in the same Brazilian town of Salvador
and have known one another since age 12 or 13
the two had a passion for surfing big waves and would often compete
Soledade won a ticket to Hawaiʻi from a Brazilian surfing competition and ended up on Maui in the mid-1990s
“Especially because we had this bond for so long and the passion for surfing big waves
we always called ourselves brothers of the ocean,” Soledade said
“Just because our passion connected us in a bond that went beyond real blood
The waterman would become an avid paddler with Hawaiian Canoe Club
Luʻuwai said Freire would play the same three to four songs on his ukulele
sometimes singing off-key through a strong Portuguese accent
“He was trying to do it so good; he was so authentic,” Lu’uwai said
said his friend taught him how to live day to day and focus on what’s important
Freire would often clean up at the beach any time he surfed and find ways to leave the environment better than the way he found it
“He was such a light in this crazy world that we live in — he brought so much happiness to everyone around him,” Soledade said
“He was one of those guys that really brought joy everywhere he went
Nate Najar and Daniela Soledade began their Friday-evening virtual concert series “Love and Bossa Nova” in late March
the dynamic jazz duo has performed – for the camera – 22 times
from their downtown balcony or (when it was raining) living room
Once they and their socially-distanced band played in an empty thestudio@620
And when they went on vacation to the Blue Ridge Mountains
they brought all their livestreaming gear and broadcast a concert from the hotel room
Inspired by the scenery, Najar and Soledade also created a video at the foot of a cascading waterfall
All was discussed Thursday on The Catalyst Sessions Thursday
joined us for the first time since April 2

Pete-born jazz guitarist and the Brazilian songbird gave a virtual mini-concert – from the proper social distance
of course – and talked about the roots of the music
bossa nova was created in Rio de Janiero in the late 1950s
when much of the population was crowded into tiny
“So when people think ‘Why do you sing bossa nova so quietly?’” she explained
“It’s not because we’re trying to be sexy – it’s because we’re trying to not bother the neighbors.”
including the legendary singer/guitarist Joao Gilberto and his vocalist wife Astrud; Najar discussed his earliest experiences with jazz

Augusto Soledade likes to share the spotlight. His Brazz Dance Theater frequently shares the bill — as in last year’s evening with Letty Bassart. This holiday weekend, Soledade is bringing the Moving Current Dance Collective from Tampa for a shared slate of performance
Soldade filled Knight Arts in on why he believes sharing is so important for dance
“Kayala” is a beautiful treatment of an Afro-Brazilian myth
From what I’ve seen Brazz Dance and Moving Current share a sometimes similar movement style
yet the content of your work seems quite different
I had envisioned sharing the stage with different companies
so the audience could see that dance is about making connections
I actually see fusion as a natural condition in the creative process
This has to do with any creative process you go through
It has to have a dynamic dialogue between the individual artist and the world
My definition of fusion goes through this way of seeing things
Last year as I stared thinking about the season this year
I really wanted to share the stage with companies that would present that clear sense of dynamic dialogue
I wanted to present that process that creators live through when they are creating art as a way to speak to the audience differently

On the eve of his 17th annual “Jazz Holiday” concert at the Palladium
guitarist Nate Najar is reflecting on the year just about gone by
Petersburg musician traveled the country as a member of Acoustic Alchemy
He’s been a substitute member of the internationally-renowned group since 2016
Carmichael sometimes has to stay in London
“He can’t get away for the stretches that we usually tour for,” explains Najar
I don’t particularly care for the circumstances with which I have the gig
but beyond that Greg Carmichael’s one of the reasons I play the nylon-string guitar and do the thing I do
They were one of the groups making music with a guy playing like that!”
“It’s like being in the Beatles or Led Zeppelin,” Najar enthuses
Then there were the excursions – to Brazil, and to California – with his longtime partner, bossa nova vocalist and songwriter Daniela Soledade
Most of the California dates sold out – the result
of the duo’s extensive online presence during the pandemic
they streamed 18 months of weekly “Love and Bossa Nova” performances
“Even at gigs in places where we don’t have roots
they’re enthusiastic about what we’re doing,” Najar says
two hours … ‘We can’t believe you made it to California.’ People still say to us ‘We watched you online during the pandemic.’
“These aren’t people I’ve known all these years
These are people who just discovered the music out there
Soledade’s career as a solo artist – Najar performs on
and produces her albums – has also benefitted from internet exposure
but there are people all over who are picking up what we’re putting down,” he says
Najar also plays a major role in Clearwater’s Suncoast Jazz Festival
He’s a frequent performer (as is Soledade)
when you’re talking about the integrity of the presentation
And I’m really grateful to be involved with it.”
Tickets are selling well for Thursday’s “Nate Najar’s Jazz Holiday” Palladium concert
Najar’s fellow performers will be Joe Porter
plus trumpet player Bruce Harris and Adrian Cunningham on sax and flute
Whatever aesthetic considerations I’m into in the moment
that’s how the holiday music is presented.”

You never know what you're going to get when you crack open a geode-like rock called an agate
but a new specimen is even more surprising than usual: It looks just like Cookie Monster
a precious stone hotspot in southern Brazil
with write-ups in newspapers from Australia to Israel to the United States
"I didn't realize that Cookie Monster was so well known and part of the world cultural heritage!" Bowers told Live Science
He's since been contacted by the actor who plays Cookie Monster on Sesame Street, he said. (Cookie Monster's official Twitter account also gave the agate a shout-out.)
Related: Photos: The world's 6 most famous rocks
The agate came to Bowers in November via Brazilian gemologist Lucas Fassari
who had acquired it in a batch of many agates from Soledade
Bowers immediately purchased the Cookie Monster agate, but didn't post it online until Jan. 16, as he was ill with COVID-19
Agates are a form of quartz, the crystalline form of silicon dioxide
that develop within cavities in volcanic rocks
The cavities are formed by gas bubbles in hot lava
water infused with silicon dioxide percolates through the cavities
the silicon dioxide is left behind on the cavity walls
The colors are caused by chemical impurities in the silicon dioxide and by the spacing of the crystals
Some agates completely fill their volcanic voids
these voids just happen to look like a pair of Muppet eyes and an enthusiastically grinning mouth
"It is somewhat uncommon to find a face shape in agates, but in many instances it's like looking at the clouds. You kind of see a face," Bowers said
"What makes the Cookie Monster unique is there is just no doubt: Clear-cut
Another unique feature of the Cookie Monster agate is that the face appears on both sides of the cut stone
Usually the voids are not lined up so neatly as to create a mirror image
It may eventually end up in a museum or in the hands of a high-end collector
"It is totally unique and awesome to see everyone loving this stone as much as we do," he said

with a particular focus on the Tin Mine target to test down-dip and lateral extensions to confirm the dimension of this significant pegmatite body
the drill rig has now been de-mobilised until the next phase of drilling
Oceana plans to complete infill drilling (including diamond core) to test the down-dip and along strike potential of the pegmatites identified during this first phase of scout drilling
The first 928 samples from holes NGR-RC-001A to NGR-RC-010 have been exported to the SGS Geosol lab in Belo Horizonte
Assays for these first holes are expected in the next 4-6 weeks
Samples from the remaining holes are expected to be exported to SGS Geosol within the next 4 weeks
An XRF is now on site to assist with the sample logging process (lithium pathfinder elements; whole rock chemistry pegmatite vs
A high-resolution drone survey (ortho-mosaic and DTM topography) was flown over Bom Jesus de Baixo and Soledade West Prospects to assist with accurate surface data required for the future 3D modelling
Interpretation and preparation of preliminary schematic cross sections is underway
Oceana completed 16 drillholes at the Bom Jesus de Baixo Prospect (1,107m)
BJdB Central and BJdB East) which are aligned along strike and dipping north
Although drilling assay results are pending for this prospect
spodumene and lepidolite have previously been confirmed from grab-sampling within the BJdB Pit walls
At the Bom Jesus de Baixo prospect Oceana completed 16 drillholes (1,107m) across 3 different targets (BJdB Pit
The Soledade West prospect is where soil samplingrreturned anomalous lithium in soil
2 trenches (274m in total) were completed on a portion of the anomaly
with 146 channel samples and 51 rock-chip samples collected by Oceana (pending assay results)
A large-scale infill soil sampling program has commenced over prioritised wider spread 2017 anomalies identified by previous explorer Cougar Metals NL
as well as CPRM/DNPM mapped pegmatites and artisanal workings
The sampling grids are along 200m spaced lines with 25m sampling stations
aligned north-south in order to cut across all typical pegmatite strike directions in this area
with the collection of 3,282 samples to date
representing 57% complete of the 5,784 planned samples for this year
Planning is also underway for trial hyperspectral remote sensing surveysaand high-resolution magnetics and radiometrics geophysics surveys over selected pegmatite and soil grid targets
An all-weather drying greenhouse has now been set up at Oceana’s Solonópole field base
as well as an XRF for the assaying of Li pathfinder elements
Two containers are also on site to provide secure lock-up sample storage
