Bitcoin prices have reached yet another record
flirting with the $69,000 price level as the digital currency benefits from numerous tailwinds
Around 9:15 a.m. EST, the digital currency rose to $68,990.90, CoinDesk data shows
trading closer to $68,600 at the time of this writing

market analysts cited several developments
which ranged from anticipation surrounding the upcoming Taproot upgrade to the latest inflation figures and how they might portend a greater interest in bitcoin
"A range of factors continue to function as structural tailwinds for Bitcoin’s price,” said Kay Khemani, managing director at Spectre.ai
are limited to just the U.S.; increased clarity on unified and coordinated regulatory reform
thereby weaving them into the existing financial fabric; and finally
Taproot upgrades that give Bitcoin functional utility within the developer community
all of which provide Bitcoin bears with cause for concern.”
Other analysts also spoke to the Taproot upgrade, with Armando Aguilar, vice president of Digital Assets Strategy for Fundstrat Global Advisors
describing it as bitcoin’s “biggest upgrade in four years.”
“Taproot will give greater transaction privacy as well as efficiency,” he stated
“But the biggest upgrade will be that it will unlock the potential for smart contracts.”
“Investors have become bullish on the latest upgrade
pushing the digital asset to new ATH in addition to macroeconomic factors,” said Aguilar
Marc Bernegger, a board member of Crypto Finance Group
“The Taproot upgrade will have a substantial impact on the future growth and usage of Bitcoin and will increase the adoption rate dramatically,” he stated
“This definitely also has an impact on the demand and price of Bitcoin.”
Petr Kozyakov, co-founder and CEO of the global payment network Mercuryo
but emphasized the importance of a separate development
“Bitcoin just surged to yet another All-Time High (ATH) just above $68,700 as the anticipation and build-up around Bitcoin’s Taproot upgrade
“While the Taproot upgrade marks a major shift in how the Bitcoin network will operate
especially in terms of transaction fees and smart contracts integration
the main forceful driver of the current run is a whole different fundamental.”
He next spoke to U.S. inflation figures, which were released today and showed that the the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers climbed 6.2% over the last year
“The inflationary trend is obvious and is bound to continue on its upward surge,” said Kozyakov
“Investors are exploring the options that cryptocurrencies
provide as a viable hedge against inflation,” he stated
“The inflationary factor appeals more to a wider class of investors compared to the Taproot Upgrade and is billed to fuel a continuous rise in BTC at least until the end of this year.”
Bernegger also spoke to these latest figures
“The publication of the massive US inflation rate today was an additional trigger for the price spike of Bitcoin,” he stated
“More and more investors are worried about a permanent and high inflation cycle and are looking for ways to preserve their assets.”
Every winter, Cyndi Lauper hosts her all-star Home For The Holiday benefit. The show raises money for True Colors United
the nonprofit that Lauper founded in 2008 to battle against LGBTQ youth homelessness
Lauper headlined the 2019 edition of the show at the Novo for the event’s first year in Los Angeles
Lauper performed alongside people like Marilyn Manson
She had Belinda Carlisle and Brandi Carlile; I wonder if those two know each other
And she also shared a magical moment onstage with a very different sort of ’80s icon
we’ve seen two competing reunited versions of Black Flag
both of which have featured ex-members of the beloved LA hardcore institution
Henry Rollins hasn’t taken part of any of them
Rollins was Black Flag’s fourth singer
He’s the most famous and longest-tenured of the band’s frontmen
But even though Rollins has the Black Flag bars tattooed on him
he doesn’t trade too much on his past in the band these days
At last night’s benefit, Rollins sang “Rise Above,” Black Flag’s immortal 1981 hardcore rager
Lauper had a mohawk and a leather jacket and a gigantic plaid skirt
and he’s gone grey in a dignified way
If Henry Rollins sings “Rise Above” while wearing a shirt
Does it count if he’s wearing anything other than a tiny black pair of running shorts and nothing else
none of the many iterations of Black Flag had a keytar player
either.) But it’s still fun as hell to watch these two singing the song together
shot a bunch of videos at last night’s benefit
Here’s Marilyn Manson and Cyndi Lauper singing “The Beautiful People” together
with Manson adding a few bars of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” at the beginning:
Here’s Lauper singing “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” with Kesha:
And here’s Lauper doing her classic ballad “True Colors” with fellow ’80s pop goddess Belinda Carlisle

As many suspected, Vitor Belfort tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone in the random Nevada State Athletic Commission drug test he underwent while in Las Vegas for the World MMA Awards on February 7
I was considering filing for a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) for testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) from the NSAC," Belfort wrote via a statement on his Instagram account
"While I had not made formal application for a TUE
the NSAC nonetheless requested I take the test and I willingly complied
the widely known fact that I was then presently on TRT and had been for many years leading up to that test and that I had further taken the TRT dosage recommended by my doctors the day prior
test indicated that my testosterone level was above the therapeutic range
While levels slightly outside the normal therapeutic range are not uncommon for some undergoing a TRT regimen
and my doctors immediately modified my therapy to return me to within the therapeutic range (as you can see the 22nd February test results was normal)
I do want to acknowledge that the February 7
2014 test indicated my level was above the range
and the results of each test indicate my levels were either normal or below normal," Belfort continued
the results of all tests noted above and will provide the same to NSCA for their consideration as part of my licensing application
I further welcome any additional testing that the NSAC deems appropriate and necessary with respect to being granted the privilege of a license to fight here in the state of Nevada."
NSAC Executive Director Bob Bennett previously told MMAFighting.com that Belfort's application will undergo a "comprehensive review" at the NSAC's June 17 hearing
and that the commission will likely require Belfort to undergo supplementary drug testing before the commission reviews his license
UFC officials released the following statement regarding Belfort's admission on Friday
"The UFC organization supports Vitor Belfort's application for a license to compete in Nevada
and we respect the Nevada Athletic Commission and its licensing process
we look forward to a great fight between Vitor Belfort and Chael Sonnen at UFC 175 on July 5."
UFC 175 is expected to take place at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay Events Center
Belfort's complete statement can be seen here. The released results of his random February 7 test can be seen below, while the released results of his subsequent self-imposed February 22, March 20, April 27 and May 15 tests can be seen here

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is now operating in line with Caretaker Conventions until the resolution of the 2025 federal election
Home > ARENAWIRE > Can we use hydrogen as an energy source?
Battery storage14 August 2017NationalCan we use hydrogen as an energy source? Can we use hydrogen as an energy source
It’s the most abundant element in the universe
keeps the sun shining and is central to nuclear fusion
helps to refine our transport fuels and is now rapidly emerging as a powerful tool in meeting the contemporary challenges of an increasing penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources in the nation’s electricity mix
Hydrogen is what is described as an ‘energy carrier’
This means that once isolated it has serious chemical potential
It can either be used as high energy fuel in its own right or act as an ‘intermediary’ molecule that can essentially transfer energy to other fuels of various types
hydrogen has been produced for a variety of uses for well over a century
largest and cheapest pathway to its delivery is currently through what is known as ‘steam reformation of methane’ or simply ‘SMR’ – a process by which natural gas is cracked with water to produce hydrogen
Many people think that hydrogen’s ability to store or carry energy offers an obvious solution to some of the challenges of building a carbon-free energy system
are going flat out but most of us are tucked up in bed and energy demand is relatively low
an excess of non-synchronous renewable energy causes problems both for the market (causing a low and sometimes negative power price) and the grid itself (frequency fluctuations)
This may lead the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) to take remedial action to curb generation
which is essentially asking wind farms to shut down or switch off temporarily – what is referred to as ‘curtailment’
Electrolysers could help avoid the need for curtailment at such times by acting as a ‘sponge’ that can soak up the excess supply by converting cheap renewables into energy dense hydrogen gas
The Energy Networks Association (ENA) sees this as a major opportunity for Australia’s gas utilities
who currently have more than 88,000km of distribution pipelines installed throughout the country
renewable hydrogen has the effect of decarbonising the gas grid with ‘green gas’ and ‘time-shifting’ renewable energy for storage and/or use at a later time
The volumetric capacity of the national gas infrastructure is equivalent to many days worth of energy storage and is able to use a vast transportation network that is already in place
and one that could complement the other storage options we now have at our disposal
including household and utility-scale batteries and pumped storage hydro systems (each of which has a role to play and is suited to specific operational and commercial contexts)
The ‘power-to-gas’ (P2G) value chain is surely worthy of serious investigation as the benefits could be huge
Beyond the advantages in terms of grid stability and stabilising supply
the changing economics of electrolysis and renewable energy mean that we may not be too far away from also having dedicated
stand alone hydrogen farms that pair renewable energy with electrolysers
to shift energy to times and/or places of higher demand
It’s an idea that is not as radical as it sounds
Way back in 1841 at the dawn of the Australian energy industry
the Australian Gas Light Company (now AGL) first began piping gas in Sydney to run street lighting
This gas supply was referred to as ‘town gas’
an unrefined coal gasification product consisting of a high proportion of varying ratios of hydrogen (<50%)
all blended together (along with a random assortment of other impurities)
this was the type of gas used until dedicated refining into methane became prevalent in the latter half of the twentieth century
to ensure consistency and quality of supply
That means hydrogen has been a cornerstone of our gas supply longer than many of us are able to remember
A reversion to a somewhat more stable and predictable mix of methane and hydrogen in a modern gas network through P2G is not something that is especially difficult to engineer
so it is nothing that should cause alarm or concern
So compelling is the P2G story that Germany and the state of California which, like South Australia, are home to some of the highest solar PV and wind penetrated markets in the world, are also pursuing it with gusto. The city of Leeds in northern England is now in the process of switching to run on 100% hydrogen and so a convergence of sorts appears to be well underway
With renewable energy dropping in price and increasing in volume, along with electrolyser technology that is now increasing in scale, efficiency and sophistication, we can expect to see more investigation of this solution as a tool to help us manage our transition to a renewable energy future.
