the existence of government records on magnetic tape brought down a president
In 1971 the Secret Service installed Sony open-reel tape recorders throughout the White House
to guarantee that Richard Nixon’s presidency would be “the best chronicled” in American history
Three years later the Supreme Court unanimously agreed that the tapes of 42 conversations had to be handed over to Congress
His failure to co-operate was one part of the articles of impeachment prepared against him

In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s surrender in May 1945
the Hoover Institution Library & Archives has released more than 800 digitized audio recordings and transcripts of conversations relating to 20th century conflict – most notably
undercover conversations with high-ranking Nazis who had fled to South America
Hoover Institution (Stanford, CA) – In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s surrender in May 1945, the Hoover Institution Library & Archives has released more than 800 digitized audio recordings and transcripts of conversations relating to 20th century conflict – most notably
Drawn from the Gerd Heidemann collection
the tapes offer unprecedented insights into the ideologies
together with a new lens on Heidemann’s reporting and research across Africa
and South America from the 1960s through the 1980s
The acquisition of this collection was led by Hoover Research Fellow and Taube Family Curator for European Collections Katharina Friedla and Hoover Visiting Fellow and University of Aberdeen Professor Thomas Weber
The release of these Heidemann tapes and the diligence of all those Library & Archives staff involved with processing the collection demonstrate Hoover’s enduring mission: to safeguard voices from history
Gerd Heidemann (1931– 2024) was a German investigative reporter and photojournalist who accumulated an expansive trove of materials that document major world events
The newly released recordings comprise only a fraction of the enormous collection
Among the recordings are conversations from the 1970s with former high-ranking Schutzstaffel (SS) officials
including Bruno Streckenbach and Klaus Barbie
Other tapes address topics spanning postcolonial warfare
and political scandals on both sides of the Atlantic
the unrepentant mindsets of Nazi perpetrators
Barbie – while speaking freely to Heidemann while undercover – boasts about his implementation of the Holocaust in France:
Barbie shares a war criminal’s perspective on atrocities we have previously known only from that of the victims’
such as the violent anti-Jewish raids in Amsterdam and their aftermath:
the Jews from upstairs and us from the street
They even threw chamber pots at us and we threw hand grenades back
“When it comes to first perspectives of top Nazis and of extremists
we generally have to rely on interviews that were conducted after 1945 in court rooms
And here we have first person perspectives of people where they really represent themselves the way they want to be seen [by like-minded people] and that is extremely important in trying to understand extremism – both then and now.”
Friedla says that “the release of these new recordings is relevant both for academic research and broader public understanding.” “By making the audio and transcripts widely available
the Library & Archives has helped to illuminate how extreme ideologies can endure in exile and how former perpetrators recall or even rationalize their crimes
The human dimension of extremism and the concept of historical accountability are themes that all can reflect on while listening to these first-person recordings.”
All 889 recordings and their transcripts – available in both English and German – have now been digitized, transcribed, and provided publicly for wide online access through the Library & Archives’ Digital Collections portal
where the materials are searchable by name
This digitization project marks a major milestone for the Library & Archives in both scope and accessibility
“We hope this collection will be mined by students and scholars for generations to come,” said Eric Wakin
Everett & Jane Hauck Director of the Hoover Institution Library & Archives
“The recordings clearly document the beliefs and actions of perpetrators of the Holocaust in their own evil words."
The Hoover Institution Library & Archives is a world-renowned repository for primary source materials on war
With more than one million digital items – including government records
and testimonies – it preserves evidence of history’s most consequential events and actors

The Supreme Court on Monday questioned the credibility of a sealed cover Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report submitted by the union government on the leaked audio tapes allegedly featuring former Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh and directed the government to submit a “fresh” report
(File Photo) A bench of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar said the Central FSL will need to re-examine the audio files in which Singh is purportedly heard saying that the ethnic violence in the state was instigated at his insistence
The bench asked the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to secure instructions from the union government on getting the Central FSL to “re-examine” the audio tapes and submit a fresh report
The court issued the directions after examining a report that was submitted by the Solicitor General in a sealed cover on Monday
You (union government) have to speak to your officers about it
Read the content and then talk to the offices
please examine and bring a fresh report,” the court said
Even as SG Mehta said he had not personally examined the contents of the report and hence
the court said neither the judiciary nor the union government was expected to “protect anyone.”
The apex court was hearing a petition filed by the Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust through advocate Prashant Bhushan
seeking a court-monitored SIT probe into the tapes
claiming that they reveal evidence of the CM’s involvement in fuelling the ethnic clashes between Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur that began in May 2023 and lasted till February this year
The violence claimed more than 230 lives and displaced tens of thousands in the northeastern state
After two years of unrest and violence in the state
who was the chief minister of Manipur at the time
leading to the imposition of President’s rule in the state on February 13
The leaked tapes in question allegedly pertain to audio recordings made by a whistleblower during a closed-door meeting with Singh
The petitioner NGO has claimed the tapes substantiate allegations of deliberate instigation of ethnic violence in the state
SG Mehta questioned the credentials of the petitioner NGO and called it a “rookie organisation.” Mehta also said a probe into the violence was already being conducted by the State and it needed at least a month more for the same
“Peace is now prevailing and the high court (of Manipur) can examine the issue
rather than escalating the situation any further,” Mehta said
said irrespective of who was the petitioner
the government and the court did not need to protect anyone
“Let us ignore the petitioner but if there is something wrong done
don’t have to protect that wrong,” the court said and directed the Solicitor General to secure instructions on re-examination and the fresh report by July 21
Compensation for these roles is $25 per hour
This is a closed-door reading (no performance) for development purposes

One of Canada's truest musical multi-hyphenates is back with more material this week. That would be the ever-consistent Tory Lanez
who's made a promise to unleash tons of unreleased music every weekend
It's quite the commitment he made to his fans as he's obviously serving his 10-year prison sentence
But lately, Tory Lanez has been focusing his energy on the "Twitch Tapes." For those who haven't been following
these are quick songs that barely crack the one-minute mark
The are all pulled from past livestreams of his own or from guest appearances on other content creators' platforms
He had dropped a few here and there when the "Lost Tapes" were getting rolled out
Also in the mix were "Prison Tapes" which were laid down in real time
Lanez recently said on social media that for the indefinite future the "Twitch Tapes" were going to be getting his attention

The first-ever NYC Tape Fair is Sunday at Selva

More than a dozen vendors will be selling rare
The festival comes at a moment when cassette tapes

algorithms and the “mechanization of music.”
“When I sit down with a tape in my Walkman
I’m just stuck with the music that’s in front of me,” said Schmiedeler
“I should be able to listen to a full album on a walk
and with Spotify I often can’t bring myself to do that.”
there’s an incredibly low financial barrier to entry – under $20 and you get amazing stuff,” said Anthony Morton
seeing some of the more niche and obscure VHS and tapes is just a fascinating piece of Americana.”
While movie studios and TV networks aren’t producing new VHS tapes
there’s a thriving market of niche collectors
The Found Footage Festival
created by comedians from The Onion and "The Late Show," describes itself as “a celebration of the videos that time forgot.” In a weekly YouTube series
they show off their latest bizarre VHS finds
along with commentary and “where are they now” updates about the subjects
Morton said the Found Footage Festival will be at the tape fair as well
selling VHS doubles and extras from its archive and connecting with other fans of the format
Cassette-heavy stores including Paradise of Replica and Captured — the physical outpost of Brooklyn record label Captured Tracks — will be offering their wares at the Tape Fair
along with VHS tapes from the newly reopened Night Owl Video and sizable independent collectors including Morton and cofounder Ricardo Marrero
Schmiedeler said cassette tapes are a big part of WKCR's music library, especially in the international music department, where fans and alums of the station have donated sizable collections of rare cassettes that get regularly play on popular shows like the Sunday evening “Raag Aur Taal,” a long-running South Asian classical music show that birthed the annual Ragas Live Festival.
“A lot of that stuff is yet to migrate onto the internet, so those shows really rely on tapes,” Schmiedeler said.
“I think tapes are going to make a big comeback similar to vinyl. They’re going to be an ‘aesthetic’ soon,” Schmiedeler said. “People will find it cool to further move away from Spotify and algorithms, and walking around with a Walkman might become a signifier of that soon.”
“I’m telling people to get in early,” he said.
“I hope this book makes people realize just how much queer history happened in every neighborhood, on, like, every block,” author Marc Zinaman said.

Digitized recordings of conversations with protagonists of 20th century conflict - including undercover conversations with high-ranking Nazis who fled to semi-hiding in South America - will be released ahead of the 80th anniversary of Germany's surrender in World War Two
They form part of the Gerd Heidemann collection held at the Hoover Institution Library & Archives at Stanford University
which is described by University of Aberdeen historian and Hoover Visiting Fellow Professor Thomas Weber as ‘the most important private collection on the Third Reich and the inner lives of extremists acquired by a university archive’
Weber and his Hoover colleague Kathatina Friedla facilitated the acquisition of the archive by Hoover
which includes an abundance of conversations with Nazis spanning the 1960s to the 1990s
Friedla is the Taube Family Curator for European Collections at Hoover’s Library & Archives
Among those Heidemann interviewed – included in the material made available – is Bruno Streckenbach the head of personnel of the SS agency in charge of the Holocaust
who spoke about what Heydrich and Himmler had told him regarding Hitler's role in the Holocaust
The release of the recordings and transcriptions in both German and English
The conversations were conducted by German investigative journalist Gerd Heidemann – a contentious figure who accumulated an expansive trove of materials that document major world events
His reputation was sullied in 1983 by the acquisition of forged Hitler diaries but new research led by Weber and Friedla has shown that he played a crucial role hunting down Nazis
which included work over two decades for the Israeli intelligence services
went to great lengths to authenticate Heidemann’s Collection
which included an authentication of Streckenbach’s voice recording by the former head of the voice recognition unit of the German Federal Police
Weber and Friedla say the release of the Heidemann tapes is an important landmark in understanding the inner lives of key Nazi perpetrators
“It is due to the tenacity and diligence of Gerd Heidemann as an investigative journalist that we now have at our hands a collection of more than seven thousand folders of papers and a hundred thousand photos in addition to the audio tapes pertaining to 20th century conflict,” they said
“We long knew about the World Press Photo Award that Heidemann won in the 1960s for his coverage of colonial warfare
Through an interview I recorded with Gerd Heidemann two weeks prior to his death
we now also know much better about the trust Mossad’s Nazi war crime unit put in him in the 1970s in hunting down Nazi war criminals in hiding,” Professor Weber said
“Camouflaging as an aide to former SS-General Karl Wolff
Heidemann managed to get in touch with the community of Nazis who had fled to South America
responsible for the deaths of many Jews and resistance fighters
Professor Weber added that the newly released tapes show that while being recorded by Heidemann
Barbie and other Nazi war criminals boasted perfectly openly of what they had done
“The recordings pull away the rug under the lies that Nazi perpetrators told in postwar court rooms
Heidemann managed to get Bruno Streckenbach to reveal how SS perpetrators and their lawyers had lied in court rooms in a coordinated fashion about their role in the ‘Holocaust by Bullets’
which resulted in the death of 1.5 million Ukrainian Jews,” Weber said
“This is an enormous archive and we’ve only really begun to scratch the surface of the secrets like this that it may hold."
alongside all those interested in the meaning and role of history
can now begin to sift through the ‘new trove of material’ that will allow them to study in greater detail than ever before the first-person perspective of the radicalization and crimes against humanity by extremists
something Professor Weber says is absolutely vital at a time at which the world once again is starting to give in to the lure of extreme political behaviour
“In line with new breakthroughs in the study of extremism
we need triangulate the inner lives of extremists against other evidence relating to their behaviour”
“As Dutch scholar of extremism Rik Peels has said
‘extremists are also people who act from convictions
who think and reflect and make difficult choices
To truly understand and explain radicalization
we must not only look at all kinds of factors that transcend them
but also at what they themselves bring to the table when they explain their beliefs and actions
“I have spent more than a decade working to ensure the Heidemann archive could be preserved
and with the wonderful work of Katharina and the Hoover Institution Library & Archives
it will now be opened up to researchers and the general public across the globe.”
For more information about this collection, visit the Hoover Institution Library & Archives digital collections website and YouTube channel
the Hoover Institution Library & Archives has served as a platform for a vibrant community of scholars and a broad public interested in the meaning and role of history
and make available for research the most important library material and archival collections on war
revolution and peace from across the globe
They build connections to those records through a robust program of fellowships
The activities of the Library & Archives are carried out with Herbert Hoover’s words in mind:
"The overall mission of this Institution is
to recall the voice of experience against the making of war
and by the study of these records and their publication
to recall man's endeavours to make and preserve peace
and to sustain for America the safeguards of the American way of life
the Institution itself must constantly and dynamically point the road to peace."

April 11th is National Eight Track Tape Day
if you were to walk out onto the street and ask any random teenager
or even 30-year-old what an eight track tape is
chances are they're going to look at you like you're insane
Because that was the 'golden era' of the format
I know exactly what an 8-track tape is and I have some hilariously fond memories of playing them
If you're reading this and you were born after 1990
consider it the prehistoric version of Apple CarPlay
it was THE way to play portable music in your car
What I remember most about that 8-track player in my mom's car is that it wasn't calibrated exactly right
we'd have to prop the tape up in the deck with a matchbook
We'd put the tape in the deck and then slide a thin book of matches on the underside of it to level it out
The History of Simple Things- a fascinating YouTube channel- recently took a deep dive into the history of 8-Track Tapes: The Music Format That Ruled the 70s
The 8-Track Tape had a pretty long life until it was ushered out of style and practicality in the mid to late 80s with the advent of the much more compact cassette tape and the compact disc (CD)
there are some old players up for grabs too
What I remember most about that 8-track player in my mom's car is that it wasn't calibrated exactly right. To get it to play, we'd have to prop the tape up in the deck with a matchbook.\nRead More
If someone is using AI to create a self-tape for audition purposes
Director of Performing Arts Programming Eric Weiss said it’s important to be aware of how AI can help or hurt when making self-tapes
“We really are interested in who applicants are as people,” said Eric Weiss MA ’01, MFA ’21 to Backstage
“Overly produced material can act as a barrier to getting a sense of who they are.”
Actors may make self-tapes for auditions to be cast in productions or to apply to colleges
But Weiss told Backstage that applicants should avoid AI-enhanced tools like using autotune
But Weiss did point at ways that AI can be helpful for self-tapes
“Any tool that actors can use to help organize the process is absolutely a good thing,” added Weiss

Official website of the State of California
What you need to know: More than 500 critical restoration projects have been fast-tracked in recent years thanks to California’s ‘Cutting Green Tape’ program
SACRAMENTO – California is making it faster, easier, and more affordable to launch environmental restoration projects across the state, thanks to a program the state’s Department of Fish and Wildlife established in 2021 called Cutting Green Tape
It’s a simple idea: streamline the complex red tape – ‘green tape’ in the case of restoration work – that often delays or blocks habitat restoration projects
Instead of forcing good environmental work to get stuck in paperwork
Cutting Green Tape removes unnecessary barriers and helps important conservation projects get approved more quickly
the program has helped more than 500 restoration projects move forward by reducing costly delays and making the approval process easier to navigate
These efforts have already contributed to the restoration of nearly 200,000 acres of habitat
the reconnection of 5.5 million acres of land
and the improvement of over 700 miles of California streams
All of these projects are critical for fish
The results speak for themselves: California is proving that cutting red tape and protecting our environment go hand-in-hand
we’ve cut red tape on more than 500 projects that have restored nearly 200,000 acres of habitat and improved hundreds of miles of streams
We’re unleashing projects from being stuck in endless paperwork and bureaucracy – all to support California’s thriving biodiversity
and better protection against climate impacts like wildfire and drought
It also means public funds and community efforts go further and have a bigger impact
CDFW estimates the program has already saved nearly $10 million in permitting costs — savings that go right back into protecting the environment
Restoration projects require permits from the state to ensure they are environmentally responsible
CDFW recently issued its first newly expanded Restoration Management Permit (RMP)
a streamlined permit that consolidates five of the most common CDFW approvals typically needed for restoration projects into one single permit
This follows legislation – Assembly Bill 1581 (Kalra) – signed by Governor Newsom last September
creating the pathway to establish the fully realized RMP
That means fewer hoops to jump through and faster starts for high-priority projects
This first expanded RMP was granted to the San Mateo Resource Conservation District for a project improving fish passage and habitat along Little Butano Creek
which in turn will boost biodiversity and support long-term ecosystem health
“Making it faster and easier to approve restoration projects has huge benefits for people and wildlife alike
which is why I’m excited we’ve issued our first restoration permit for the Little Butano Creek Project in the Pescadero watershed,” said CDFW Director Charlton H
rather than navigating multiple approvals from the department
we can streamline restoration projects with a single approval process
exponentially cutting down on time and cost
This is a huge benefit for California’s restoration projects
and I anticipate many more streamlined approvals to come.”
Located along a tributary to Butano Creek in the Pescadero Creek watershed
the goal of the project is to restore fish passage at an existing 15-foot-tall chute
This will increase access to the Little Butano Creek watershed
enabling certain fish to complete their lifecycle and keep these species thriving
The project is expected to enhance approximately 1,000 linear feet of aquatic habitat and 3.52 acres of riparian and wetland habitat for the benefit of coho salmon
Santa Cruz black salamander and San Francisco dusky-footed woodrat
“The Restoration Management Permit is a game changer
enabling us to complete high-priority habitat restoration
much more quickly and cost-effectively in partnership with CDFW,” said Kellyx Nelson

Single Stream Recycling refers to a system in which all kinds of recyclables such as plastics
are put into a single bin by residents
Once the recyclables are collected they are transported to the Springfield Material Recovery Facility (MRF) where they are sorted and processed
recycling has changed and evolved over time
Recently the markets have changed and recycling no longer provides the same fiscal benefits to communities as it used to
This is all the more reason we continue our work as a community to improve our recycling efforts
We have a full time Recycling Enforcement Coordinator who is out in the community Tuesday through Friday working to help keep our recycling stream clean
or you may have seen evidence of him in the form of the orange stickers left on recycling barrels
These stickers are just a friendly reminder of what can and cannot go in the recycling barrel
We understand that everyone makes mistakes sometimes
and that’s why our Recycling Enforcement Coordinator is available to answer any questions you may have
and his vehicle is always stocked with helpful educational materials to hand out
We stay ever vigilant to enforce clean recycling because contaminated recycling comes at a high cost to our City in the form of pricey fines
every scenario that involves contamination in the recycling comes with a cost
once the recycling truck has finished a particular street
and a barrel was left behind for contamination
we often get a request to return to the residence to empty the barrel
While we understand the reasoning behind these requests
it is cost prohibitive to return to areas once they have been completed
However rest assured we will be back on your following recycle week and we will be glad to empty your barrel as long as the contamination has been removed
If you find that you have an overflow of recycling
please feel free to place any additional recycling in a cardboard box next to your recycle barrel and it will be picked up with your recycling
Residents are also welcome to drop off their recycling at the Bondi’s Island Landfill
To find out when your recycling day is, simply enter your address in our GIS mapping system here. You may also call the 311 Service Center with any questions regarding your recycling services

But it's not clear what they've actually done
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has claimed that the US government has saved a million dollars per year “by converting 14,000 magnetic tapes (70-year-old technology for information storage) to permanent modern digital records.”
In a message on Elon Musk's social media platform X
the Musk body said the General Services Administration (GSA) IT team "just saved" the money through the migration
While tape storage was invented 70 years ago
the magnetic tapes used by the government are based on newer technology - transistors are similarly 70+ years old
but semiconductors are much more advanced now
Linear Tape-Open (LTO) has advanced significantly
vastly improving its storage capabilities and read speed
tape remains the cheapest and greenest approach
At rest, tape requires no power, and can last 15-30 years, depending on storage conditions. Microsoft is in the midst of an ambitious effort to build a new cold storage technology out of silica glass
but the project is still years away from fruition - and
It is not clear what DOGE means by "permanent modern digital records." No storage system is permanent
requiring copying forward at the end of the medium's useable life
With hard drives and SSDs lasting just a few years if actively run (and a few more if not)
that means regularly shifting the data to a new generation of hardware and destroying the old equipment
Also unclear is when the data migration occurred - digitizing and converting 14,000 tapes would be a large task
DOGE has claimed credit for modernization efforts that predated it
so it is possible this was already in the works
but the data was likely moved to a cloud provider - who might ultimately use tape for the storage
It is also possible that the GSA shifted the data to hotter storage to be able to access it faster and more regularly
the DOGE claim remains hard to verify and at odds with the realities of storage costs
This is not the first time Musk and DOGE have taken aim at physical storage
In February 2025, Musk criticized a federal contract with Iron Mountain to store physical records
labeling it a "time warp" and adding: "The speed at which the mineshaft elevator can move determines how many people can retire from the federal government
The latter claim appears to be unfounded. While a 2019 Government Accountability Office report criticized the process
and incomplete applications were to blame for the delays
The department did not respond to requests for clarification regarding the savings it claims to have made by digitizing the magnetic tapes

Former Charlottesville weatherman Josh Fitzpatrick
told investigators he has been making sex tapes since before 2018
The revelation came in court documents filed shortly before the 42-year-old and onetime 29News employee made his first local court appearance
"You should have a lawyer," Judge Matthew Quatrara told the suspect Friday in Albemarle County General District Court
"I don't have one right now," replied Fitzpatrick
appearing on video from the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail
a jail official advised the judge about the value of Fitzpatrick's bank account and his vehicle and said Fitzpatrick was receiving Medicaid and food stamps
automatically allows the public to fund Fitzpatrick's legal defense
"The law says if you receive public assistance
it's presumed that you qualify," said Quatrara
Fitzpatrick relocated to his home town of Gallipolis
shortly after the investigation into him began
and he was arrested in Gallia County on April 22
"I didn't know I had warrant out or I would have headed back to Virginia to defend myself," said Fitzpatrick
"The situation in which you find yourself is not a do-it-yourself project," replied the judge
Quatrara then shared an anecdote about once tinkering with a generator in his yard and seeing a giant spark leap from his wrench
"This is not a do-it-yourself project," Quatrara repeated
Because prosecutor Holly Vradenburgh opposed bail
Fitzpatrick will remain jailed at least until whoever ends up representing his interests can arrange a bail hearing in advance of a preliminary hearing
they appear to have been investigated at least twice
According to the criminal complaint penned by detective Michael Schneider of the Albemarle County Police Department's special victims unit
authorities received a report about Fitzpatrick in 2018 when a man identified only by his initials
which The Daily Progress will not be sharing due to the sensitive nature of the case
contacted the department to allege sexual extortion
The report doesn't explain why that investigation foundered
When a new alleged victim came forward in late February of this year
Schneider returned to the first man and learned that Fitzpatrick had made a secret video of a consensual sexual encounter and was threatening to put it on the internet
"[The first victim] did not consent to any video being taken of him," wrote Schneider
the alleged motive for threatening to post the footage was to urge additional sexual activity
Such a motive was also named in the more recent accusation by a victim also identified only by their initials
This second man told investigators that he had consensual sex at Fitzpatrick's apartment in the Eagle's Landing complex southwest of Charlottesville at some point between 2020 and 2022
Fitzpatrick has been harassing him for years and soliciting more sexual encounters and has threatened to release the 'sex tape' if [the victim] doesn't comply with his requests," Schneider wrote
The second man reported receiving Fitzpatrick's messages on Grindr
Fitzpatrick has sent screenshots of the video to him where he is nude and engaged in sexual acts with Mr
"and screenshots of videos with other males that are engaging in sex acts with Mr
That would explain why Albemarle County police are urging "anyone who may have had an encounter with Fitzpatrick" to contact Schneider at (434) 296-5807
The last person convicted in a local court of sexual extortion was former coffee shop manager William Aleander Portillo
he admitted to tricking a University of Virginia student into sending nude pictures of herself and then demanding money to prevent their release
Portillo faces sentencing in Albemarle County Circuit Court on June 6
A state conviction of sexual extortion is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison
The other charge Fitzpatrick faces is producing a nude image without the consent of the subject
a misdemeanor punishable by up to 12 months

in which an old man rummages through recordings of his younger self
This haunting play invites actors and audiences to reconnect with their past
Gary Oldman and Stephen Rea unspool Beckett’s masterpiece about memoryKrapp’s Last Tape
Since my late teens I’ve returned time and again to Samuel Beckett’s brief but monumental one-act play in which a purple-nosed
“wearish old man” spools through reels of memoir recorded each year on his birthday
Krapp’s Last Tape is not quite a monologue
It becomes a kind of dialogue between the 69-year-old Krapp and his recorded 39-year-old self
who in turn reflects on how he behaved in his late 20s
“Perhaps my best years are gone,” says Krapp towards the end of the play
disproves any such suggestion with an acutely moving performance
boosted by the use of his own archive recording of the younger Krapp’s lines – done on a whim by the actor in 2009 and stowed away for future use
Rea worked with Beckett on Endgame in 1976 (and did a film of it in 1991) and brings to bear the great writer’s note on that play
When I talked to Hurt about his memories of Krapp’s Last Tape
the year after its 1999 run at the Barbican’s Pit
He instantly replied that he wished I’d seen it in 2013
by which time he had withdrawn the anger from his portrayal
The recording of the younger Krapp that he made for the Barbican run was used for all his subsequent productions
Hurt was similarly critical of that audio performance
he acknowledged: “The more I come to dislike what I did on the tape
the more it plays into the hands of the present Krapp.”
In depicting a man who is frustrated – even deflated – by his past, both personally and professionally, Beckett’s play taps into the self-critical actor’s quest for the perfect performance. This gained an unexpected charge on the night I saw Robert Wilson’s thundery expressionist production
a nearby theatregoer was so unimpressed that they booed Wilson
who took his bow seemingly still in character as Krapp
View image in fullscreenMichael Gambon as Krapp in 2010. Oldman’s production features the same machine that Gambon used. Photograph: Tristram Kenton/The GuardianRea’s Krapp, directed by Vicky Featherstone
twice looks over his shoulder at the pitch-black that surrounds him
is more like a cell than Beckett’s “den” and brings an air of confession or self-interrogation
Krapp’s desk comes with comically deep drawers
Playing Krapp comes with high potassium levels: you usually see this number of bananas eaten by tennis players not actors
Krapp berates himself for tucking into them and keeps the fruit under lock and key – it’s a rigmarole to reach them
much like his system for storing away memories that bring a similarly peculiar mix of pain and pleasure
Rea seems to inhale the scent of his first banana before taking a huge bite that leaves its stringy bits dangling from his lips
Malcolm Rippeth’s sepia lighting for Oldman’s cluttered set evokes a bruised banana; Oldman slings his skins to the floor and gives a sly grin before biting into his second one
Recognising that every sound matters in Beckett
Oldman fills the theatre with the sound of laborious masticating
Both actors excel at the comedy of Krapp: Rea skittering on and off stage with the reels
Oldman affecting a light and airy voice as he draws out the word “spooool”
When Rea reads from the dictionary a description of the “vidua bird” with its black plumage
the humour is increased by the actor’s own mop of dark curls
Rea turns the memory of a “bony old ghost of a whore” into a cantankerous standup routine
Each actor nails the self-satisfied 39-year-old’s grand proclamation to be at the “crest of the wave”; both emphasise how the older man has not changed as much as he might have wished in the decades since
and the relationship between the three Krapps is pivotal to the play
as suggested by the on-the-nose choice of We Three (My Echo
as introductory music for Oldman’s production
His set accentuates the clutter and resembles an attic as he seems to emerge from beneath to potter around boxes
crates and old furniture that form a lifetime of precious detritus
which also suggests he is shored up on an island
even implies a connection between Krapp’s ramshackle belongings and the fragmented scenes and gestures that Beckett wrote for the character
even the passing references to other characters in Krapp’s Last Tape emphasise its themes – like Old Miss McGlome who sings “songs of her girlhood”
View image in fullscreenIntimate staging … James Hayes in Krapp’s Last Tape at Jermyn Street theatre
Photograph: Tristram Kenton/The GuardianThe first Krapp I saw was soon after reading it at university
That performance was memorable for being halted when an acrid smell wafted off the machine and the theatre’s tech team were called in to investigate
I recall feeling cheated that they resumed at the same point and didn’t do the 50-ish minute play once more from the top
I saw that show with a friend who died at the age of 41 – I now realise that the only tapes I own
are compilations he made for me over the years
A trip to Krapp’s Last Tape in my 20s rekindled a romance that I would come to replay with my own sense of regret
The most striking lines of this singular play – where even the stage directions are longer than the speeches spoken live – are about a breakup
he recalls it like this: “I said again I thought it was hopeless and no good going on and she agreed
without opening her eyes.” It occurs on a punt on a sun-kissed afternoon
he perfects the agitated state in which Krapp searches for the section – capturing Hurt’s belief that Krapp is an addict
Krapp is a play about memory-making: about stockpiling the moments that define us, not unlike assembling a mix tape or organising your iCloud. It’s what the younger Krapp, an aspiring writer, calls “separating the grain from the husks” – about as good a description as you could use for Beckett’s precision as a playwright. But it is also about self-deception and not facing down the difficult episodes, such as the death of Krapp’s mother.
Beckett tells us the play is set in the future – his masterpiece acknowledges the weight of what may lie ahead as well as what has passed

racketeering and transportation for prostitution

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, the former music mogul, is headed to Manhattan federal court on Monday for his high-profile sex trafficking crimes trial
Prosecutors have charged Combs with racketeering, sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion, and transportation for prostitution purposes. The charges stem from allegations made by four unnamed people
Details of the accusations are related to “freak offs” or drug-fueled parties that Combs is said to have hosted with others
where victims were allegedly coerced into having sex with sex workers
Combs and his “enterprise” of associates allegedly threatened victims with extortion or sometimes physical violence to remain quiet about the “freaks offs.”
Combs has pleaded not guilty to all charges
rejected a plea deal and maintained his innocence
and a panel of 12 jurors and six alternates will need to be seated in the case by the end of the week
better known by his stage names “Diddy” or “Puff Daddy,” is a rapper
music producer and executive of Bad Boy Records who has made a name for himself producing some of the biggest artists of the past two decades
Combs has faced various allegations of abuse and making threats against people
His legal disputes took a turn in 2023 when his ex-partner, Cassie Ventura, filed a lawsuit against him alleging rape, sex trafficking and physical abuse. Combs claimed innocence, but the two settled the case out of court.
But a slew of civil court cases brought by other people emerged after
many with allegations of abuse or coercion into sex acts
In September, Combs was arrested in New York on a three-count indictment brought by a grand jury
The indictment claimed he ran a decades-long criminal enterprise using the people around him to assist in abusing women and coercing them into lurid sex acts
That enterprise is central to prosecutors’ racketeering charge – a crime also known as RICO that was initially created to go after mobsters
Combs allegedly lured people into his orbit with promises of career success or financial support and then became controlling over their lives
dictating everything from their housing to medical records
to make victims compliant with his desires and then directed “freak offs” which were recorded – sometimes unknowingly to the victim – and later used for Combs’ pleasure
He allegedly used intimidation tactics such as brandishing an AR-15
threatening victims with financial consequences
claiming he would use embarrassing or incriminating footage in the “freak offs” against them and other methods to force women into doing what he wanted
His arrest came six months after agents from the Department of Homeland Security raided two of the music mogul’s homes. During the raids, helicopters captured agents removing things from Combs’s home while two of his sons were detained – a typical procedure
The sons were released after the raid was complete and have not been charged
prosecutors have brought two superseding indictments that include more counts of the same crimes and further details of abuse
Combs could be facing life in prison if he is found guilty on the charges
overseen by District Judge Arun Subramanian
is expected to last eight weeks – thought it could be longer or shorter
The prosecution is made up of several attorneys including Maurene Comey, the daughter of former FBI director James Comey and former lead prosecutor in Ghislaine Maxwell’s case. The lead attorneys for the government include Emily Johnson
Combs’s lead attorney is Marc Agnifilo
an experienced criminal defense attorney who previously represented NXIVM sex cult leader Keith Rainere
Prosecutors will use evidence collected during the home raids to assist their case. In the indictments, attorneys for the government alleged Combs had more than 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant stocked in his home to use during “freak offs,” as well as narcotics
and AR-15-style firearms with defaced serial numbers
Agents said they also uncovered electronic devices that they say contain photos and videos of “freak offs.”
The defense previously tried to get the 2016 video of Combs beating up Cassie declared inadmissible but the judge denied the request
Combs’s lawyer has asserted the videos will show adults having “consensual sex” and contain no evidence of violence
It’s unclear who will testify in the case as the list is not publicly available but sources told CNN that Ventura is expected to serve as a central witness for the prosecution
Several other victims are expected to testify but they may remain unidentifiable to protect their identities
Agnifilo said the defense is prepared to have several of Combs’s former employees testify to his “dedication
Although Combs is facing more than 30 other civil lawsuits
Only allegations directly related to the charges in the indictment are allowed
A group of potential jurors in New York will be asked questions about themselves and their background
so attorneys for both sides and the judge can determine the best people to judge the case against Combs
Jurors’ identities are likely going to be kept confidential because some of the questions they will be asked will be about personal experiences with sexual assault or domestic abuse
Once a panel of 12 jurors and six alternates are seated
Combs has been held in Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York while awaiting trial. The judge overseeing his case has denied his requests for bail.

One of my favorite nostalgic Facebook pages shared something that other day that triggered a memory of McDonald's that you may also share
you could purchase a VHS tape for a special low price with your nuggets and fries
The McDonald's Holiday Film Fest was an annual event from 1991 to 1994. Some ads I've seen had movies listed for $5.99
and $7.99 with the purchase of a large sandwich or extra-value combo meal
Some of the movies came with rebates for a couple of dollars off the purchase of other movies
And just look at those retro menu boards and display cases
Some of the movies included in these promotions were the Indiana Jones trilogy films
All of the tapes were marked with the McDonald's logo and a "not for resale" label
there was a major controversy in 1992 with the Dances With Wolves promotion
Various VHS tape retailers were upset over the partnership between the fast food company and distributor Orion Home Video
Making this and other films available for such a low price at McDonald's meant retailers lost out on potential sales
Did you ever purchase one of the VHS tapes from McDonald's
Do you still have any of them in your collection

This adds to a string of divestitures this year under CEO Kevin Kwilinski
It comes a week after Amcor announced plans to acquire Berry
Since taking the helm at Berry in October 2023, Kwilinski has been vocal about streamlining the company’s focus
Kwilinski said the tapes sale “further supports these efforts and the continued focus on our high-growth consumer portfolio.”
Earlier this year, he said the company had divested its Strata and Promens Vehicles businesses within its Consumer Packaging International segment, netting $47 million in total proceeds. He teased more to come, estimating in May that divestitures over the next year could result in at least $2 billion in cash proceeds
The strategy with divestitures was to get at least 70% of Berry’s volumes to have a consumer products focus
“I am absolutely committed to getting this portfolio right as fast as we can so that we can be very focused on growing our core consumer business,” Kwilinski said in May
Rhode Island-based private equity firm Nautic Partners
whose portfolio is partly focused on industrials
Its companies include polymer compounding business Aurora Material Solutions
said Berry’s tapes business “has significant runway to grow.”
Private equity has played a role in numerous transactions across the packaging industry this year
Berry expects to use the approximately $400 million in proceeds from the tapes sale to pay down debt
Berry anticipates the two recent sales together generated $1.3 billion
The company reported its pro forma net debt following the two deals was $5.9 billion as of Sept
It listed pro forma revenue at $9.7 billion
Berry reported that selling the tapes business “further reinforces the strategic rationale” for its combination with Amcor “and has no material impact on the financial profile of the combined entity.”
Following the Amcor-Berry deal announcement last week
Amcor CEO Peter Konieczny was asked about potential divestitures; he said there’s “very little overlap.” He also said that there could be “an opportunity to shed businesses” in the future
senior paper and packaging analyst at Truist Securities
said in a memo late Monday following the tapes sale announcement that the move is “consistent with [Berry’s] strategy to minimize exposure to more cyclical industrial end-markets and reorient the portfolio to higher-growth consumer end-markets.”

The York Theatre Royal has to be up there as one of the best theatre exteriors in the UK
it's like a theatre's been stuck behind Dracula's castle (first and last Gary Oldman reference) - just pipped for me by the very exterior exteriors of the Minack Theatre
As a Beckett nerd whose University city was York
I jumped at the chance to hop on the train and catch Gary Oldman perform Samuel Beckett’s haunting memory play
And at just fifty-five minutes and a nine-page script
Samuel Beckett’s marmite monologue is a difficult one to keep spinning
eating bananas and listening to tapes of his own voice from birthdays gone by
We hear him speaking at his thirty-ninth; there’s love
recounting memories he struggles to hold and understand
in a statement that I'm sure would make many any English Literature student cry - think Black Mirror if it were written in 1958
photos and your Facebook friends from secondary school
memory is a changing concept - like Krapp - it is not something that will disappear entirely
fragments of everything will always exist to remind you of the life you lived
There is an inescapable whiff of vanity project hanging around the production
I think he might have a pop at scanning the tickets on the way in as well
it is clear that watching a Gary Oldman spectacular is by no means a bad thing
With an epic stage and screen career under his belt
he is regarded as one of Britain's finest
and he again proves here to be an endlessly versatile performer
the shuffling drunkard with a love for bananas
Oldman finds a home amongst the darkness and grime
He commands the York Theatre Royal with just his eyes or the slight move of a finger
His expert voice work on the tapes carries the piece; it is rich
soothing and captures the sadness in his thirty-ninth year
and my eyes and heart were fixed on him for the whole thing
Beckett’s one-act play feels like a ritual
the ageing Krapp sits with his tape machine
and records a tape for the year that has been
then the tape machine is god - it is in fact
the same machine used by both John Hurt and Michael Gambon in their previous performances of Krapp
Through Oldman and the etchings on the machine
I struggle to decide whether the performance I watched was a captivating piece of theatre or an academic exercise
Oldman has chosen to deviate from Beckett’s notoriously rigid script
telling an actor down to the very second how long to leave the stage for and drink
Oldman stays seated; he also emits most of the comedy from the piece
with an early Charlie Chaplin banana peel-based gag being cut
I hate that productions (in many famous cases
have a Google) are legally required to stick to the letter of Beckett's writing
but the choice to cut the small glimmers of light and air in an otherwise dense play feels misguided
I worry how easy it is to get wrapped up in the grandeur of this production
a few hundred University dissertations have been written on
For all its nuance and intelligent ponderings on life and memory
Should it have footage of Subway Surfers playing on a loop underneath to keep Gen Z theatre students entertained
Krapp’s Last Tape is playing at the York Theatre Royal until 17th May

The inspiring story of how Czech Republic won gold at the first Olympics to feature professionals from the NHL
On January 14th,1996—his 21st birthday—Ricardo López started videotaping himself laying out his plot to attack the Icelandic popstar Björk
López said Björk was a symbol of purity and innocence to him
an image which he said she destroyed by having relationships with two different black musicians
previously with Massive Attack’s Tricky and
López lays out his initial plan to send Björk a package that would infect her with AIDS
he changed this plan to a letter bomb containing sulfuric acid
in which López commits suicide wearing red and green zigzagging face paint while Björk’s music plays in the background
now has a notorious reputation on the internet
with gifs of it being linked by online trolls or the clip being edited into other videos for unsuspecting viewers.
Filmmaker Heather Landsman seriously considers López’s footage in her new film The Best of Me
which condenses the 20-some hours of tapes López produced into a hauntingly candid look into a deeply unwell and alienated individual
Landsman strives to create as objective a viewpoint on López as possible
instead letting López reveal—often in duration—his terrifying and sad psychosis
The footage that Landsman assembles feels incredibly prescient: in its proto-vlog format
its engagement with a life that has been reduced to a memetic “creepy pasta” image by the internet
and its explication of an extraordinarily lonely individual’s violent fixations built from media consumption.
The Best of Me is being independently distributed by Landsman through the Film-Makers’ Cooperative
Upcoming screenings include Los Angeles’s Whammy
on May 9 and the Cooperative itself in New York City on May 24
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
DOCUMENTARY: The Best of Me reminded me of the feeling of stumbling across these videos in the middle of the night and sitting with them for a long time
HEATHER LANDSMAN: I think my first exposure to this story was stumbling upon it as a kid when I shouldn’t have been
One thing I found interesting about this is how it got mythologized on the internet
especially the final tapes with him in that red and green face paint
I definitely knew from the get-go that I wanted it to be no editorializing
no commentary—just straight from his words
especially even in regards to the proto-vlog style
I didn’t think about it a lot as I was editing it
but it’s one thing that a lot of people have brought up to me since: he’s kind of the original vlogger
He used this style of video diaries to talk to himself or the camera in the mid-to-late 90s
before it became such a normal part of YouTube and the internet.
It’s almost as if the camera is just a way to speak to somebody
but it also puts the viewer in a therapist's perspective.
HL: The idea of adding any kind of commentary to it felt wrong to me because you get all of it from him
He incriminates himself in every facet and any possible way that people could diagnose this case
Something that was very important to me was that I wanted this to be a very objective viewing experience because
The first thing he does when he starts recording himself is admit that he has this racist psychosexual fixation on Björk and the fact that she is with a black man is why he feels he has to punish her
He doesn’t leave anything up for interpretation
he’s been thinking through it the entire time
I looked back at this one documentary that was made right in the midst of this case happening, The Video Diary of Ricardo López (1999)
it’s just someone narrating over little snippets of the footage
You can’t talk about the case without talking about his racism
The way I want the viewer to sit with this person
empathetic sense and not gloss over any of those monstrosities
it hits like a bullet—the language he uses
the way he talks about her and her boyfriend at the time
You get this very interesting window into his life surrounding his plan
but also a little bit of what his life is outside of that and his mental state at the time.
D: He’s very open about how this fixation is entirely formed by his media consumption and how insular his life is—he’s open about being a virgin
and he self-diagnoses with Klinefelter syndrome
his parents are calling and they’re concerned,” or he talks a little bit about his job
That’s an entirely different world than what we see
we see just what’s going on in his mind in his apartment.
HL: One of the most impactful tapes is that one where he talks about his condition and also his family life
Though he mentions his mother throughout all the tapes
about how “My mother will be emotionally destroyed because of this.” I knew that whole tape was super essential to include because of that
it’s that brief window into his life outside his plan.
there would be points where I would lull back listening to what he was saying and what kind of visual information was in this tape
All of a sudden I heard that quote and was like “Wait
what?” I had to run that back and include that.
D: That part is funny too because he’s trying to remember the quote while he’s saying it
But he really wants to get out exactly what it was
and he wants to be recorded the exact way he wants to be seen
He’s thinking about how somebody would watch and interpret him the whole time.
HL: It was very important to me to include the outside the edges of that—setting up the camera
flubbing his lines (if that’s what you want to call it), fixing his setup
I knew that needed to be in there to give you a little bit of a sense of him when he doesn’t think the camera is rolling
or footage that he doesn’t think people are watching.
D: By allowing the film to speak for itself and be self-evident
it lends a certain “objectivity” compared to documentaries where the filmmakers choose to use archival footage to editorialize
HL: One inspiration for me—both as a formal aesthetic but also as thematic and ethical reference point—was Gus Van Sant’s Elephant (2003)
It’s one of my favorite movies of all-time
While The Best of Me is a documentary
a lot of people forget that in making a documentary you narrativize real life
in every interview for Elephant in the press run
Gus Van Sant talked about how he didn’t want to diagnose the shooters
The role of the form of going between these different perspectives and following them unbroken was to give you a sense of every single thing leading up to it and you take that as you will
I knew that this needed to show every single aspect of his life that he brings up in reference to Björk
reading through writing on it and also the way it got mythologized as this piece of visual internet horror or “creepy pasta” troll gif
it really struck me how little any of the real coverage of it or online actually got into just his life and his mental state at the time.
D: In the 2010s into the post-COVID moment
online incel culture became very endemic in young men
Was this something that was on your mind while going through the footage
HL: I wasn’t really thinking about it while making
but having seen the movie at the different screenings and just sitting with it and thinking more about that kind of rise in that weird corner of the internet that has that fascination with “lolcows.” Ricardo López predated that
Something that always really disturbed me is men on the internet’s fascination with these sad people who are clearly hurting
but also they clearly need some form of help
especially as of late with stuff like Chris Chan and Daniel Larson
World of T-Shirts is someone who’s less of a monstrous person but clearly hurting
They all got lumped together into this modern niche of people who have become a punching bag—in some ways

SOUTH BEND — The case of the South Bend Police Department tapes continues
with a June 18 bench trial scheduled that could determine if the tape recordings were legal and if recorded conversations
will take place on May 16 with Superior Court Judge Jamie Woods
A bench trial is scheduled with Woods for June 18 and 20 at 8:30 a.m
DePaepe claimed that the recording contained evidence of officers "engaged in serious acts of misconduct" and "racially derogatory statements relating to other ranking officers," including Boykins, The Tribune previously reported. DePaepe discovered the recordings before making Boykins aware of them
ruling that Corbett and Richmond were not on any of the recordings
The South Bend Common Council previously demanded the recordings when news of the tapes' existence became public
but the city administration refused to hand them over
The common council filed a motion to strike portions of evidence from the intervenors in January 2025
claiming the evidence was "excessive" and "irrelevant," Woods' March 14 ruling states
The motion was denied on the judge's ruling that the evidence is "proper and necessary" being directly related to the case
The court finds that the background of how and why the recordings were made is essential to determining the "broader legal and equitable issues in this case," the judge's order said
The legality of the recordings remains unresolved
therefore the common council's motion for a summary judgement was denied
These matters require the court to weigh evidence and credibility within a trial
The court also wants to prevent the unlawful disclosure of the recordings to prevent potential future harm
During the investigation, former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg — who took office in January 2012 — demoted Boykins to the rank of captain and fired DePaepe according to a violation of policy 21 4.2: conduct unbecoming a city employee.
Boykins sued Buttigieg, the city and Mike Schmuhl, the mayor's former chief of staff, claiming "racial animus" as the reason for his demotion and sought compensatory and punitive damages
In December 2013, Boykins, Corbett, Richmond, Wells, Young, Sandy Young and their attorneys received a settlement related to the ongoing wiretap controversy

We Are Rewind's EDITH WE-001 combines old-school looks with Bluetooth and USB-C charging
but the EDITH WE-001 has Bluetooth for your headphones and a 12-hour rechargeable battery
it's priced at £129 / $159 / €149
If you know what connects a pencil to a C90 cassette tape
We Are Rewind has the perfect portable music player for you
Its a lovingly-crafted homage to the Walkman era
it comes complete with a pencil for tightening up tapes when they go a bit wonky
It also appears to have taken its pink and green colour scheme from a 1980s tracksuit
Don't let the retro looks fool you, though. The deck comes in rugged aluminium rather than flimsy plastic, and there's some modern tech in there so you can use it with the best wireless headphones as well as old-school over-ears
We Are Rewind also makes a suitably retro-looking pair of wireless headphones as an optional extra
The EDITH WE-001 cassette player dumps the double-A batteries in favour of a rechargeable internal battery
capable of delivering up to 12 hours of playback
but there's a 3.5mm input jack for an external mic or another sound source for your recording
home and active products from the T3 experts
I think the recording feature could be fun
I like the idea of hooking up a digital music source to the EDITH WE-001 and recording it onto hissy tape
It could also prove a rather colourful dictaphone for meetings
The EDITH has a recommended retail price of £129 / $159 / €149 / about AU$268
making it a little more expensive than its closest rival
We Are Rewind products are sold through Rough Trade, Selfridges, FNAC, Turntable Lab and independent record shops, and the EDITH WE-001 is available now alongside other colour options
you will then be prompted to enter your display name

Long-term biopotential acquisition is of great significance for the early detection and timely treatment of various diseases
the standard silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) gel electrodes may cause skin irritation when worn for a long time
Repeating the use of electrodes on different individuals can lead to the risk of cross-infection
we propose a smart electronic tape (SET) to acquire biopotentials
in the form of a dry single-sided tape made from a combination of an ultra-stretchable conductive pattern on substrates with different functions
The high stability and durability of the patterned conductors provide accurate and timely acquisition of biopotentials
such as electrocardiograph (ECG) and electromyography (EMG)
The strong adhesive behavior of the tape as well as the low-cost manufacturing process allow convenient and long-term wearing in a disposable manner
We anticipate the SET will pioneer next-gen wearable electronics for applications like disease prevention
The main problem for the liquid metal-based electrode is its complex operation
it is still challenging to develop self-adhesive
and low-cost electrodes with the capability of seamless contact with the skin for long-term monitoring of physiological electricity
we report a series of smart electronic tapes (SET) comprising carbon nanotubes (CNTs) electrode
which take advantages of an optimal second-order serpentine design on biocompatible and chemically inert substrate
and excellent breathability are achieved simultaneously
cytotoxicity test has been conducted to evaluate the safety
demonstrating a harmless behavior to organ cells
which enabled firm adhesion to skin without any delamination or detachment after wearing for a long time (7 days)
Compared with the traditional Ag/AgCl gel electrode and other electrodes
SET has realized long-term and effective monitoring of physiological signals under various human conditions with a low noise level
we design a wearable virtual reality (VR) gesture interaction system utilizing the SETs to collect arm’s muscle electrical signals to control the speed and direction of a virtual vehicle in real-time

Temperature is also one of the important factors that affect the normal use of the equipment. As shown in Supplementary Fig. 7
considering the actual usage scenarios of SETs
we monitored the electrical properties of SETs within the range of 20–50 °C
The experimental results show that when the temperature rises from 20 °C to 50 °C
the resistance change rate of SET is lower than 3%
demonstrating relatively stable performance
within the common temperature range of the human body (35–40 °C)
the resistance change rate of SETs is ~0.33%
having almost no impact on the performance of SETs

the performance of the PU-SET decreased by approximately 10%
and it was still able to collect ECG signals with high quality
The experimental results have verified that PU-SETs are highly stable and reliable for long-term wearing
All the results have demonstrated that PU-SET is capable of monitoring all-day activities

i Photograph of virtual reality interactive system based on EMG signal
The negligible delay time (16.6 ms) makes the VR system interaction practically real-time
we develop a SET to acquire various biopotentials
An ultra-stretchable CNT-based electrode with optimal second-order serpentine pattern has been easily manufactured and transferred to various kinds of tapes
The SETs demonstrate superior stretchability (more than 300%)
stability (less than 40% change in resistance under 100% strain)
durability (over 45,000 cycles of stretching/releasing)
Despite the long-term and comfortable wearing
both ECG and EMG signals have been successfully acquired by placing the SETs on human arm with comparable accuracy and efficiency to commercial gel electrodes
highly accurate and real-time recognition of finger bending and controlling of a vehicle in VR system have also been realized through detecting the EMG signals with negligible delay time
We have compared various properties of different types of electrodes, and summarized the values in Supplementary Table 1. As shown in Supplementary Table 1
higher signal-to-noise ratio and higher peak-to-peak value
which enables our devices to have the ability to collect high-quality bioelectric signals
the SETs also show higher adhesion and stable electrical properties
which further ensures the applicability of our devices in complex environments
the patterning of the conductive material further reduces its effective contact area with the skin
the SET still has difficulty working effectively in skin areas with more hair
we could explore and develop flexible substrates that are temperature-insensitive and have excellent directional sweating capabilities to address the negative effects caused by sweat and extreme temperatures
we could investigate the integrated design and combination of the wireless signal transmission module and the long-distance wireless energy transfer unit with the smart electronic tape
which would further improve the portability and continuity of wearing the smart electronic tape
we can either choose or develop new degradable base materials and optimize product design to allow the reuse of key components
extending the service life and reducing waste
we need to establish and perfect a recycling mechanism to alleviate the environmental impact of the disposable design
The patterns are designed using AutoCAD software
A laser direct writing equipment has been employed to etch the aluminum plate using the designed pattern
A smooth aluminum plate is chosen as the substrate of the mold
and various designed patterns are etched on the aluminum substrate by the laser etching equipment to form second-order serpentine lines with a pattern width of 200 ± 20 μm and a depth of about 30 μm
The laser-etched template was then rinsed with deionized water and dried at 80 oC for 2 h
to ensure that the release agent can completely cover the surface of the mold
continuous spraying of the fluorine release agent (DR-518) is carried out for 5 to 6 s at a distance of 20–30 cm from the surface of the mold
and the above operation is repeated three times to complete the preparation of the mold
PDMS (purchased from Aladdin) solution was mixed with CNTs (13 wt%
INC) and stirred for 30 min at room temperature to form a well-dispersed PDMS/CNT mixture
the mixture was filled into the mold using the squeegee printing method
various pastes were evenly printed on the mixture and dried at 80 °C for 2 h
the resultant tape was peeled off after cooling down
Conductive carbon oil is used to connect the wires and smart electronic tape
and the interface is encapsulated with ultra-thin PU tape

All the groups were cultured at 37 °C in an incubator with 5% CO2
The cell confluency and morphology were investigated with an inverted microscope
and the medium was changed 24 h after the cell-seeded

C2013M) was used to observe the live cell rates of different groups according to the manufacturer’s protocol
250 µl diluted calcein-AM was added to each group
After 30 min incubation and rinsingd with PBS
the samples were observed and recorded using a fluorescent microscope
The image information was processed by ImageJ software
The tensile and mechanical tests of the device are completed by the test system we built
The system is composed of a source meter (Keithley 2400
Tektronix) for real-timely recording the change of electrical properties
and a high-precision stepper motor (MTS316
The force gauge (HANDPI HP-5) was used to detect the real-time force change that was applied to materials and devices
The accuracy of the moving displacement could reach 2.5 µm
loading-displacement curves were conducted with a tensile mold at a peeling test speed of 2.5 mm s−1
When testing the electrical properties of the SET under different strain and 45,000 cyclic tensile experiments
the moving speed of the stepping motor was 25 mm s−1
The physiological electrical signal test (ECG and EMG) is completed by our own flexible intelligent monitoring system and source meter

you might remember dropping one into a player
only to have it screech at you when you pressed “play”
people recorded their favourite tunes straight from the radio
Some of us made home recordings with our sibling and grandparents – precious childhood snippets
And a few of us even have recordings from that time we travelled to a village in Vanuatu
and heard the locals performing in a language that no longer exists
such recordings are beyond priceless – yet often out of reach
due to the degradation of old cassettes over time
Our digital archive, PARADISEC (Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures) contains thousands of hours of audio – mainly from musicological or linguistic fieldwork
This audio represents some 1,360 languages
with a major focus on languages of the Pacific and Papua New Guinea
The PARADISEC research project was started in 2003 as a collaboration between the universities of Melbourne and Sydney
Like a humanities telescope, PARADISEC allows us to learn more about the language diversity around us, as we explained in a 2016 Conversation article
While many of the tapes we get are in good condition and can be readily played and digitised
We work with colleagues at agencies such as the Solomon Islands National Museum
for whom we recently repaired a set of cassettes that were previously unplayable and just screeched
back to Honiara in February and expect to pick up more for further treatment
Screeching happens when a tape is dried out and can’t move through the mechanism easily
The screeching covers the audio signal we want to capture
my colleague Sam King built (with the help of his colleague Doug Smith) a cassette-lubricating machine while working at the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies
This machine – likely the first of its kind in Australia – allowed us to play many previously unplayable tapes
Sam built two versions of an updated machine called the LM-3032 Tape Restorator for PARADISEC
3D printing others and writing code for the controllers
The LM-3032 Tape Restorator works by applying cyclomethicone (a silicone-based solvent used in cosmetics) to the length of a tape. This leaves behind an extremely thin film of lubrication that allows smoother playback, making digitisation possible. See more details here
Tests have shown this process has no negative long-term effects on the tape
tapes treated with this method five years ago still play without issues
This technological wizardry allows us to salvage precious analogue recordings before it’s too late
these may be the only known recordings – stored on a single cassette
Some of the primary research records digitised by PARADISEC have survived long periods of neglect in offices
The audio below is from a tape that was kept at Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley for 40 years
It features beautiful singing in the local Walmajarri language
The first seven seconds are from the untreated tape
while the rest is from the treated version
Our experience has shown community members truly value finding records in their own languages
and we’re committed to making this process easier for them
Here’s one testimonial from E’ava Geita, Papua New Guinea’s current acting Solicitor General. In 2015, Geita was overjoyed to hear digitised records capturing PNG’s Koita language:
If only you witnessed and captured the reaction in me going through the recordings at home
From feeling of awe to emotion to deep excitement
The feeling of knowing that your language has been documented or recorded in a structured way
hearing it spoken 50–60 years ago and by some people you haven’t seen but whose names you only hear in history is quite incredible
It is most heartwarming to know that it is possible to sustain the life of my language
Thank you once again for the opportunity to listen to the records
Acknowlegement: I’d like to thank Sam King for the technical information provided in this article

Stephen Rea gives a standout performance in this Beckett revival
In this latest revival of Krapp’s Last Tape at the Barbican Centre
Directed by Vicky Featherstone and starring Stephen Rea, this one-hander from Samuel Beckett sees an old man looking back at his life through the tapes he makes on his birthday
It has been a production that has been almost fated to be: Rea recorded in 2009 the lines heard from Krapp’s younger self while Featherstone was considering a version of this play before she left her position as the Royal Court’s Artistic Director
The short running time of just under an hour belies the dramatic power of this 1958 masterpiece
It can be deeply underwhelming for first-timers as there are few bursts of emotion and has little in the way of a plot or explicit exposition
If Beckett’s more famous work Waiting For Godot is a play where famously “nothing happens
this could be seen by some as one where nothing of note happens at all
Beckett has aimed squarely for the portrait of a man who knows that the road ahead of him is shorter than the onе behind
The tapes he mounts in a stack on his desk are his milestones along life’s paths and
seeks out the words of his 39-year-old self
Both Rea and Featherstone take the old man’s clowning seriously
The 78-year-old actor is older than his character by almost a decade but can still play the fool with a carefree air and immaculate timing
testing how far it can be elongated before pattering around in his den
As realised through Jamie Vartan’s bare set design
this is Krapp’s kingdom where he can drop or throw banana skins wherever he likes
His studied over-reliance on the yellow fruit is shown here by having him reach for a key around his neck to unlock a comically long drawer in his desk
It is when Rea is sat down with his arms around the tape machine
intently listening in on a voice from three decades ago
He mourns the relationship he gave up so that he could embrace a career that petered out long ago
scoffs at the arrogance he displayed at that age and then nods along with his younger self at the naivety he displayed as a twenty-something
This Krapp is not raging against the dying of the light but accepting his choices and where they led him
Rea effortlessly brings out the dark melancholy felt in the present day; when attempting to convey his most recent achievements in a depressed monotone
he is barely able to find anything to say before he angrily stops and goes back to listening to the older tapes
as the lonely oldster wanders away from us into the kitchen
we never find out whether the tape he has recorded is his final one or merely his most recent
The Irish playwright seems to be flavour of the month. Up in York, Gary Oldman is currently directing and starring in his own Krapp; meanwhile, over in New York, Jamie Lloyd is preparing his vision of Waiting For Godot with Keanu Reeves and Alex Winters in the lead roles
Bill and Ted’s minimalist adventure begins previews on 13 September
Krapp's Last Tape continues at Barbican Centre until 3 May.
The historic Saville Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue is set to return to live performance for the first time in over half a century, following planning approval from Camden Council.
