Brazil national team captain Bruno Rezende had a promising debut with new club Taubate Funvic as the 34-year-old setter led the reigning Superliga champions to a comfortable win in their first match of the 2020 Paulista Championship on Friday evening
who have won the last six editions of the tournament
had an energetic performance to secure a 3-0 (25-13
25-16) victory over Vedacit Guarulhos.
The match was memorable to Rio 2016 Olympic champion Bruno
who returned to a Brazilian club after three seasons in Italy
where he played for Modena and Cucine Lube Civitanova.
“It felt great to be back in a match after six months,” Bruno said
but there’s no other way to have matches right now
we were surprisingly consistent in every aspect of the game considering we hadn’t played in a long time
but now we keep working to give Taubate another title.”
several other players made their debuts for Taubate in the match
most noticeably fellow Rio 2016 Olympic champion outside hitter Mauricio Borges
The reigning Superliga champions have three other Olympic champions in their roster including outside hitter Douglas Souza and middle blockers Lucas Saatkamp and Mauricio Souza
who also appeared on the sidelines managing Taubate for the first time after he was signed to replace Renan Dal Zotto
was pleased by the team’s performance in the opening match of the season
“I’m very pleased with our performance,” the Argentinean commented
but what made me happier tonight was the team’s focus and attitude from the first point to the last
It was great to see that in the very first match
especially after such a long period of inactivity.”

global leader in smart and sustainable mobility
has celebrated the opening of the expansion of its rolling stock plant in Taubaté
in the presence of its CEO and Chairman of the Board
employees and municipal and state authorities
and celebrated the beginning of a new stage in the company's history in Brazil.
Alstom invested €14 million to expand and modernise the industrial site
tripling the plant’s manufacturing footprint to 60,000 m2
The investment is part of the company's growth strategy
after the signing of six national and international contracts
Production on two projects has already started
with work at the factory continuing through to 2028
More than 170 trains (940+ cars) will be produced by Alstom in Taubaté for the cities of São Paulo (Brazil)
highlighting the facility's ability to contribute to mobility projects on a global level
In addition to investing in the plant to execute current projects
the company will gradually hire around 750 professionals in the State of São Paulo between now and March 2023
around 500 professionals are being trained by the National Service for Industrial Learning – SENAI Taubaté – to be able to work directly in the production of projects
Henri Poupart-Lafarge highlighted the importance of expanding the plant to increase the company's competitiveness in the markets where it is present
whether in Brazil or abroad: “The mobility industry is essential for the world market and for society in general
We have been looking for strategic opportunities to continue to grow to support societies as they transition to lower and zero-emission transportation for passengers and freight
The expansion of this factory in Brazil is extremely important to reinforcing our position as a global benchmark for innovative and sustainable mobility
quality and customer satisfaction in the railway industry.”
Zamalek SC delivered a perfect performance in their opening match at the 2024 IHF Men’s Club World Championship
in the third and final match of the first day of this edition of the world club handball flagship competition
During the draw for the 2024 IHF Men’s Club World Championship
Zamalek SC were the team which could have lamented their luck the most
as Handebol Taubaté looked to be the strongest team from Pot 3
which would mean that the Egyptian side had a tougher path towards the semi-finals
Zamalek set out to secure the win in the match
but the Egyptian side provided one of their best wins in the history of the competition
with a flawless defensive display in the first half
two of them coming in the first four minutes
arguably the most experienced side from Pot 3 of the draw
but everything collapsed after Zamalek’s goalkeeper
Hendawy had eight saves for an otherworldly 62% saving efficiency
The main vector for that gap was a 6:0 run
with Zamalek using another 5:1 run to open the 12-goal gap at the break
fueled by a fantastic outing from centre back Mohamed Omar
three assists and two interceptions to help his side build this gap
The Egyptian side continued to press after the break
followed by a four-goal unanswered run from Taubaté
which had a meagre 31% shooting efficiency in the first half
But with Zamalek’s starters getting more and more tired and with a match against Veszprem coming up
with the Brazilian side winning the second half by a whopping difference of seven goals
That four-goal unanswered run created the buffer needed by Taubaté to keep the gap under control
while Hendawy was replaced between the posts by Mahmoud Khalil
eventually finishing the match with 16 saves
the Egyptian side was slower in the second part
it was still Zamalek which clinched the win
by the lowest margin in the first day of the IHF Men’s Club World Championship
with their outstanding performance in the first half deciding the outcome of the match
but questions marks will be raised over their drive and performance in the second part
when the Brazilian champions were clearly better
Zamalek aim to deliver an even better performance than in this opener
Player of the Match: Karim Hendawy (Zamalek SC)
EMS Taubate Funvic may not have started the 2020-2021 Brazilian club season on a high as for the first time in seven years the team failed to win the Paulista Championship
but they managed to bounce back from the early setback just fine
15-11) victory over 2019 FIVB Men’s Club World Championship silver medallists Sada Cruzeiro Volei
the Taubate-based side secured their second title in seven days with their triumph at the 2020 Brazilian Supercup in Campo Grande on Friday
The team had won the Trofeu Volei Brasil last week
Taubate have now won back-to-back titles in the tournament following their victory in the 2019-2020 season
The single-match event reunites the winner of the Brazilian Superliga and the Brazilian Cup in the previous season
Middle blocker Mauricio Souza had a prominent role in Taubate’s come-from-behind win as the 32-year-old veteran had a great performance in the match
being efficient in offence and from the service line and registering important blocks in key moments of the match
“Losing the Paulista Championship was very hard
but it brought us together as a team,” the 2.09m-tall Rio 2016 Olympic champion commented
“It’s easy to tell we’ve progressed a lot since then
Winning these two tournaments against a very strong Sada Cruzeiro team motivates and shows we’re headed in the right direction
It’s always difficult and decided by details
but there’s nothing better than celebrating a title like this.”
Sada Cruzeiro’s opposite and 2019 FIVB World Cup Most Valuable Player Alan Souza led all scorers in the match with 18 points
Taubate had to deal with a couple of notable absences as Rio 2016 Olympic champion outside hitter Douglas Souza couldn’t be on the court due to a back issue and Brazil national team captain Bruno Rezende started the match but had to be replaced by veteran setter Rapha Oliveira after he sustained a calf injury
“It was another difficult match,” Rapha reacted
Even if we defeated them 3-0 in the Trofeu Volei Brasil last week
the match was a lot closer than it might have looked
We were prepared for a long match and all the players did a fantastic job of helping each other.”

Company will export to Chile carshells manufactured in the city
September 3, 2018 – Alstom announces the opening of a new production line at Taubaté site, focused on the manufacture of stainless steel carshells for the Santiago Metro, in Chile. The adaptation is part of the resumption of industrial activities in this unit, and also covers the hiring of new employees.
To meet this demand, by 2020 the factory will have approximately 120 employees in the administrative and operational areas. In partnership with SENAI (National Industrial Learning Service entity), employees from the operational area were trained during the last quarter and some workers from the Lapa site were transferred to continue the project.
"The resumption of the industrial activities in Taubaté site is a very important mark for us all and reinforces our commitment with the country and the region. This site is a modern plant, equipped and prepared to receive railway projects coming from Brazil or any other country in the world, generating employment and bringing development for our region", says Pierre-Emmanuel Bercaire, Managing Director for Alstom Brazil.
Since its opening in 2015, Alstom has invested around R$ 50 million (around 12 million of Euros) in Taubaté factory, which has around 16 thousand square meters and was remodeled for four months to receive the new production line. The site is prepared to produce a total of 7 stainless steel carshells per month in one shift.
Winning titles has never really been a problem for Brazilian national team captain Bruno Rezende and it didn’t take long for the 34-year-old setter to secure the first one with his new team EMS Taubate Funvic.
The Rio 2016 Olympic champion lifted a trophy in just his second tournament with the team as Taubate defeated 2019 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championships silver medallists Sada Cruzeiro Volei 3-0 (25-23, 29-27, 25-21) at the Arena do Minas in Belo Horizonte on Saturday to win the first edition of the Trofeu Super Volei.
The winners of the 2018-2019 edition of the Superliga, who have four other Olympic champions on their roster in outside hitter Mauricio Borges and Douglas Souza and middle blockers Lucas Saatkamp and Mauricio Souza, were dominant in the tournament, winning all of their three matches without dropping a single set.

“Sada Cruzeiro was finding ways to work around our block early on

“We passed well and Felipe and Joao Rafael were really strong at the net
We were coming from a rough week and it was great to see the team bounce back in such strong fashion and take our first national title in the season.”
Taubate’s victory in the tournament that precedes the 2020-2021 edition of the country’s Superliga meant even more for the club as it happened one week after they finished second at the Paulista Championship behind Volei Renata Campinas
ending a run of six-straight titles in the event.
“Losing the Paulista Championship hurt us a lot,” Joao Rafael
“We brought a silver medal into our locker room to remind us of how frustrated we felt last week and we were really determined to win this one
Our coaching staff has done a tremendous job and I’m learning a lot from them and my teammates.”
Sada Cruzeiro won’t have to wait long for an opportunity to get payback on Taubate as the teams will clash again next Friday
in the Brazilian Supercup Final in Campo Grande.

“I always do my best to help the team as much as I can,” the 23-year-old Roque said. “Sometimes it doesn’t happen and at the beginning of the match I thought it would be one of those days, but fortunately things changed. Now we need to keep our focus and prepare for the second match.”
Roque counted on some help from a handful of his national team teammates as outside hitter Douglas Souza scored 14 points (12 kills, two blocks) while middle blockers Mauricio Souza and Lucas Saatkamp added 13 (eight kills, five blocks) and 12 (ten kills, two blocks), respectively.

the team that had represented the SCAHC in the last two editions of the competitions
Pinheiros started the game better and took a narrow 13:12 lead at the break
Pinheiros stayed true to their course and shocked the favourites with a 27:26 win

The big news is the closure of the Camaçari
Taubaté and Troller plants in Brazil
Main production at the Camaçari and Taubaté plants will “cease immediately,” although some parts production will continue for a few months to build up inventories for aftermarket sales
The Troller plant in Horizonte will close in the fourth quarter and the moves mean the company will no longer sell the EcoSport

Ford didn’t say how many jobs will be affected
but the Camaçari plant employed approximately 4,600 people
roughly 1,370 people worked at the Taubaté engine plant
The move is pretty drastic, but Ford noted the “COVID-19 pandemic amplifies persistent industry idle capacity and slow sales that have resulted in years of significant losses.” The automaker also said they’re not abandoning Brazil as they will maintain their product development center in Bahia
proving ground in Tatuí as well as their regional headquarters in São Paulo
In a statement, Ford CEO Jim Farley said “With more than a century in South America and Brazil

asset-light business model by ceasing production in Brazil and serving customers with some of the best and most exciting vehicles in our global portfolio.”
Speaking of the latter, Ford said Brazil will receive the Bronco and Mustang Mach 1 as well as the new Transit and Ranger pickup
Ford went on to say they’re planning to “accelerate the introduction of several new connected and electrified models.”
Ford is taking a roughly $4.1 (£3.0 / €3.3) billion hit from the move including around $2.5 (£1.8 / €2.0) billion in cash that will be used for separation
termination and settlement agreements as well as other payments
Ford announced on January 11 that it will end its production of cars in Brazil
shutting down its three plants in the cities of Camaçari
But tens of thousands more jobs are directly associated with its production chain
the global automotive industry is undergoing a transformation process driven by new and emerging technologies in connected services
with consumer demands and regulatory items reshaping the market.”
a massive destruction of jobs and wage cuts globally being enacted by Ford and the entire auto industry
The latest wave of job and cost cuts began several years ago
escalating in 2018 and 2019 with a major downturn in the auto industry already then on the horizon
Ford announced a worldwide restructuring aimed at a multibillion-dollar reduction in costs
“The goal is to streamline the organization
It will mean a reduction in workforce,” explained Mark Truby
the company’s vice president of global communications
the company fired 7,000 white-collar workers and laid off 12,000 workers as it closed five European plants
3,000 direct employees and 1,500 outsourced workers were laid off
not to mention the approximately 20,000 workers at the related auto parts plants
The slashing of jobs being promoted now by Ford follows thousands of other layoffs in Brazil’s auto industry that occurred last year
Last December, Mercedes-Benz announced that it would shut down its car production in Brazil, firing the 370 workers at its luxury vehicle plant. Renault-Nissan slashed more than 1,000 jobs in 2020, and Volkswagen announced that it would cut one third of its workforce
having opened on Monday a voluntary layoff program for this purpose
Ford’s announcement of the closure of its plants was answered by workers with protests
contract and outsourced workers from the Ford Northeast Industrial Complex in Camaçari demonstrated at the factory gates demanding to keep their jobs
A new protest was held the next day in front of the Legislative Assembly of Bahia (Alba)
where representatives of the Camaçari Metalworkers Union met with Alba President Nelson Leal
where Ford produces engines and transmissions
Workers voted to set a vigil to block both people and materials from entering and exiting the factory for an indefinite period
already preparing a betrayal of the workers’ resistance to job cuts and the closure of plants
linked to the CTB union federation and the Maoist Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB)
According to the president of the union and PCdoB activist
Júlio Bonfim: “[The] way out so that thousands of workers don’t lose their jobs ..
[is] the construction of an auto parts industrial park ..
or either the arrival of another automaker [that] can guarantee jobs
the intense flow in the economy of the Metropolitan Region [of Salvador].”
This corporatist vision is the same advocated by the governor of Bahia
whom Bonfim is joining in a “working group,” which
“is looking for companies interested in investing in the industrial park where Ford Camaçari’s headquarters used to be
considered the largest automotive plant in South America.”
The Metalworkers Union of Taubaté and Region (Sindmetau)
linked to the CUT union federation and the PT
is working to divert the Ford workers’ struggle through empty demands to the state
were mobilized to participate in a meeting held Wednesday on Sindmetau
The main measure adopted at this meeting was “the holding of a public hearing in the Legislative Assembly of São Paulo,” advocated by PT state congressman Teonilio Barba
who declared that “the intention is to seek greater involvement of the state government.” The CUT’s president also declared: “All pressure is needed at this time
The country is deindustrializing because the government is encouraging deindustrialization.”
The unions and parties like the PT and PCdoB
as they work to divert workers’ opposition into safe channels within the bourgeois state
seek to establish an opposition to the administration of Brazil’s fascistic President Jair Bolsonaro’s that is based on the reactionary interests of Brazilian national capitalism
Speaking to his supporters outside the government palace on Tuesday
“I’m sorry for 5,000 jobs lost,” but “Ford has failed to tell the truth.” According to him
“They want subsidies.” “Do you want to keep giving them 20 billion [reais]
as you have done in recent years?” he said in reference to the incentives paid by the Brazilian government to Ford since 1999 (equivalent to US$ 3.85 billion)
the president of the National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea)
declared that these subsidies would have functioned as “a way to correct the distortions of the Brazilian tax system,” according to O Globo
“We have been pointing for years to measures that need to be taken to improve competitiveness in Brazil,” said Moraes
This consists mainly of a pro-capitalist tax reform
Anfavea’s arguments are not in any way different from those of unions and bourgeois nationalist parties like the PT and PCdoB
The CUT and other union federations for years have advanced as their fundamental program the creation of tax incentives for companies
They criticize the governments that succeeded the PT in power for not having an “auto program” to stimulate competitiveness for production in Brazil
the PT’s Governor Rui Costa declared in a note on Ford’s closure: “Unfortunately
there are hundreds of industries that are closing
since we have a country that does not take care of its economy
does not guarantee institutional security to its investors and does not make the necessary reforms—including the tax [reform] that we need so badly.”
While fighting for the competitiveness of Brazilian capitalism
the unions are employing against Ford workers today the same methods they used to suppress resistance to the closing of the São Bernardo do Campo plant in 2019
did everything to wear out a 42-day strike
isolating the workers locally and preventing independent actions
It ended up signing an agreement that accepted the closing of the plant
The union then acted in practice as the representative of a business group interested in buying the plant
negotiating bank loans for the group and offering low wages to attract its investments
Ford workers urgently need to take the reins of this struggle and lead it in another direction
It is necessary to break with the corporatist unions
forming independent rank-and-file committees to unify the struggle among all the plants and with the working class as a whole
It is also of fundamental importance to overcome the capitalist and nationalist perspective defended by the unions
Against the malign global restructuring plans of the transnational auto corporations
workers must advance their own strategy of a globally unified struggle
which is fought for by the World Socialist Web Site and the International Committee of the Fourth International

Taubatherium paulacoutoi lived 23 to 24 million years ago in the area now occupied by the Tremembé Formation in the Taubaté Basin
on the São Paulo State side of the Paraíba Valley
The now-extinct mammal was thoroughly studied by paleontologist Graziella do Couto Ribeiro while pursuing her doctorate
defended in September 2015 at the Biosciences Institute of the University of São Paulo (IB-USP)
Based on an analysis of 490 teeth and bones from several specimens of the species
whose fossils were first discovered in the 1970s by paleontologist Herculano Alvarenga
Ribeiro completed an anatomic and comparative description of the animal’s skeleton
which belonged to the extinct ungulate family Leontiniidae
was approximately 1.80 meter long and 80 centimeters tall
This means that its body size and weight made it comparable to modern species of equids (horses
“These characteristics support the hypothesis that it was a herbivore of gregarious habits
living in herds at the edge of a paleolake,” says the researcher
The study also permitted the first reconstruction of a complete skeleton of the species
now on display at the Taubaté Museum of Natural History (MHNT)
founded and chaired by Alvarenga and where Ribeiro works as a researcher
paulacoutoi is part of the extinct mammal fauna of the Taubaté Basin
which included a number of endemic species
