the election race for the NL district of Terra Nova-The Peninsulas was still too close to call
it still hadn’t been called as of 2:30 a.m
it was still in question as a single poll had not been reported
When that final poll was counted Tuesday evening
Almost 24 hours after the polls closed originally
Germain led Rowe by just 12 votes — 19,704 to 19,692 — a far cry from just a day before

the NDP’s Liam Ryan had received 1,677 votes
Germain was actually playing scrabble with his wife at the couple’s home in Salvage when a knock came to his door
It was his neighbours coming to offer him congratulations on his narrow victory
Germain had his ringer off and had no idea he had won
being being told by two really sweet down to earth people who are from Salvage on the Eastport Peninsula was a much better way to find out than some phone call
Elections Canada confirmed late Tuesday morning
contains the “special ballots” cast in the riding — an unknown number of votes that were sent in via mail
electors had to apply before the Elections Canada deadline
if you’re in a hospital or correctional institution
or by Special Forces members voting at any military poll
Unlike the ballots one receives at the poll
special ballots are blank and voters had to write in the name of the candidate of their choice
then mail it back to Elections Canada’s Ottawa office before 7:30 p.m
It could also be dropped off at Elections Canada offices
that special poll remained outstanding on April 29
the votes it contains could mean a big difference in the results in Terra Nova-The Peninsulas
where the narrow margin between the two means the riding could go to either the Liberals or the Conservatives
depending on how many special ballots were cast
While this isn’t exactly a Cinderella story that took place in the riding on Monday
Conservative Jonathan Rowe and Liberal Anthony Germain were locked in a tight race to replace longtime area MP Churence Rogers — who announced he was retiring as the area’s MP last December — that only got tighter as the night moved on
but as polls continued to report in — including the advanced polls
which were well-attended — his lead started to shrink as Germain continued to gain votes and ground
Germain and Rowe were tied with three polls remaining
The tight finish will likely also require a recount in the coming days
“I would really like to especially thank those last 12 voters
whether you win by 12 votes or 12,000 votes
“So as I’m trying to get my head around being the Member of Parliament for Terra Nova-The Peninsula
I’m really thinking back about all of the doors I’ve knocked on
and keeping in mind that when you’re a member of parliament
you are the representative for everybody in your riding
While the national blue wave never really materialized for the Conservatives — it remained to be seen whether it would be a Liberal minority or majority — there was a wave of sorts that swept over parts of Newfoundland and Labrador
Central Newfoundland MP Clifford Small kept his seat
while Conservative Carol Anstey is the new MP for the riding of Long Range Mountains
representing an increase of two ridings in the province for the Conservatives
that the Liberals lost ground in NL as they picked up five seats
elected were incumbent Joanne Thompson in St
Philip Earle (Labrador) and Tom Osbourne (Cape Spear) are the new Liberal MPs
Germain credited both his opponents for strong campaigns
and I think we need young people in politics
and I’m sure from what I’ve learned of both Jonathan and Liam
they have no intention of retreating from the field of politics,” he said
One thing is for sure: the people of Terra Nova-The Peninsulas came out to vote
Once each of the 270 riding polls had reported in
65 per cent of the over 63,000 eligible voters had turned in a ballot
over 41,000 votes were cast on election day and before it
among the highest percentages across the province
“It’s my obligation and duty to represent everybody here
and that’s exactly what I’m going to try to do,” said Germain
“My job now is to really bring Newfoundland to Ottawa

the latest models feature a surprising jumping hours complication
Interpreted in two different styles and case sizes
a streamlined Art Deco watch with a protective cover over the dial
Upholding the external design traits of the vintage field watch-inspired Terra Nova collection
both models come in cushion-shaped cases with short lugs and oversized crowns
The 38mm Terra Nova Bronze edition harks back to early 20th-century trench watches with shrapnel guards or metal grilles to protect the dial
the larger 40.5mm steel Terra Nova has an off-centred jumping hours and minutes display set against a black background
Both Terra Nova watches share the newly developed calibre BC634 made for Bremont by Sellita
This customised jumping hours movement (protected for two years) has a high torque
ensuring the jump to the next numeral occurs in less than 1/10th of a second
the new movement is fitted with a Glucydur balance wheel
an Anachron balance spring and delivers a robust 56-hour power reserve – the base being a Sellita SW300
the Terra Nova Jumping Hour Bronze editions – available with a bronze bracelet or brown leather strap – stand out with their bronze cases and bronze shield-style dial with three apertures
The cupro-aluminium case has a 38mm diameter and a thin height of 9.1mm
Both the case and dial cover are vertically brushed with polished bevels
Fitted with a PVD bronze-coloured steel caseback
it might come as a surprise to discover that the water-resistance rating is limited to 30m
typical of montre à guichet (watch with apertures) timepieces
reveals the jumping hours in a trapezium-shaped window at noon
followed by a running seconds in the circular aperture at the centre with the brand’s new Wayfinder compass logo in the background
The minutes are featured beneath the seconds
All three displays have a refined golden frame and are protected by sapphire crystal windows with white backgrounds and brown numerals
both the 3-link bronze bracelet and the brown leather strap with cream box stitching are interchangeable and limited to 100 pieces each
eccentric layout and interesting track design
the larger Terra Nova Jumping Hours exudes a sleek and refined Art Deco spirit
Presented in a 40.5mm cushion-shaped stainless steel case with a low profile of 10.15mm
the case is decorated with satin-brushed finishes and a brightly polished bezel
the large push-in crown features the new Wayfinder compass rose logo
and the caseback is sealed and decorated with a map of the globe
the steel models have a reassuring 100m water-resistance
the trapezium-shaped aperture for the jumping hours is featured on the dial at 9 o’clock with the minutes window positioned next to it
the contiguous windows are outlined in silver and display white numerals against a black background
The silver-printed peripheral seconds track is composed of broken railway-style tracks clustered in formations of three and separated by circles and triangles at 12
the central seconds hand is entirely covered in green-emission Super-LumiNova
matching the lume applied to the triangular markers and jumping hour numerals
Available with a quick-release steel bracelet or a black gradient leather strap
The Terra Nova in bronze, paired with a bronze bracelet, retails for EUR 5,900. The Terra Nova bronze model with a leather strap is priced at EUR 5,450; both are limited editions of 100 pieces. The Terra Nova in steel, on a steel bracelet, has a retail price of EUR 4,500; on a leather strap, it is EUR 4,200. More information at bremont.com
it seems almost impossible to see the precise minutes
Bremont continues to go from strength to strength
I like the designs and seems to be a bit more legible than the Cartier releases
I do wonder a few things like how can the water resistance be anything with open cavities
The early 2010s were filled with high-concept genre shows made in the wake of the monumental medium-changing success of "Lost." Shows like "FlashForward," "Revolution," or "The Event" had ambitious concepts and big mysteries but failed to capture the essence of what made "Lost" successful — hint
One show from that wave was "Terra Nova." There were many reasons to believe this show would be a big hit
hot off the astonishing success of James Cameron's first "Avatar" movie
It boasted having none other than Steven Spielberg as an executive producer
and it was a TV show about people going back in time and battling dinosaurs
Steven "I directed 'Jurassic Park' and changed blockbuster cinema forever" Spielberg executive produced a TV show about dinosaurs
and Stephen Lang was not even hiding the fact that he is literally just doing Colonel Miles Quaritch from "Avatar" again — same motivation
Unfortunately, "Terra Nova" joined the many, many TV shows that only lasted one season (but it was nowhere near the best one-season shows)
The reason is surprising to absolutely no one — barely anyone watched the show
"They're down in Australia building sets like it's going to be the next 'Jurassic Park.'"
Unsurprisingly for a big production that ended up failing with audiences, "Terra Nova" also had problems behind the scenes. The show had a revolving door of creatives, with writers, directors, and showrunners changing before the cameras finally rolled. Reportedly, Kevin Bacon and Kyle Chandler were approached to star, but they passed (according to TheWrap)
By the time "Terra Nova" finally made it to air
and an interesting story of humanity messing up Earth so much they decided not to go to Mars but instead
But it was also an awkwardly written family drama with a big focus on teen romance stories
Sure, there was still the draw of a Spielberg-produced show, but that wasn't that uncommon. After all, Spielberg also produced the underwhelming found-footage action horror TV show "The River," the ambitious but narratively underwhelming "Falling Skies" (which is getting a second life on Max now)
Watching "Terra Nova" in 2025, the CG doesn't look that good, but it is hard not to admire the boldness of the show to tackle one of the hardest stories to crack, and on a smaller budget. After all, the only dinosaur movies that have actually been hits have the word "Jurassic" in the title (no
we're not counting the MonsterVerse movies)
the show had an impressive cast that went on to do great things
who returned to "Avatar" to play the same character even after death
who would go on to play Batman in animated movies for nearly a decade
and Naomi Scott pre-"Power Rangers" and "Smile 2."
Last year, the British watchmaker from Henley-on-Thames unveiled a Terra Nova collection of rugged field watches
drawing inspiration from early 20th-century military pocket watches
designed for functionality and practicality
featured stainless steel cushion-shaped cases with a low profile and short
Their defining characteristics included a large push-in crown for easy operation and highly legible dials
thanks to oversized Arabic numerals cut from blocks of vintage-tone Super-LumiNova and faceted pencil hands
The collection introduced a new logo and departed from Bremont’s signature Trip-Tick case construction – a change that sparked some debate among fans. However, as CEO Davide Cerrato explained in an interview we published a few months after the Terra Nova launch
the decision was a deliberate evolution for the brand
Now, the collection expands with three new references, all presented in cases made from high-strength cupro-aluminium alloy, all sharing the specs with last year´s debut models (the time-only Terra Nova 38 does not get a Bronze counterpart): the Terra Nova 40.5mm Date Bronze
and the Terra Nova 40.5mm Turning Bezel Power Reserve Bronze
The Terra Nova 40.5mm Date Bronze retains the same functionality and design as its steel counterpart
the only difference being its distinctive bronze casing
The brushed and polished cupro-aluminium case boasts a “soft golden tone with a warm reddish hue”
developing a refined and even patina over time – unlike traditional bronze
which tends to oxidize unevenly with green and black discolouration
The two-piece case is topped with a domed sapphire crystal and features a PVD bronze-coloured steel caseback
It measures 11.11mm thick and 47mm lug-to-lug
and the water resistance is rated at 100 meters
The Terra Nova 40.5mm Date Bronze gradient green metal dial is framed by a railway-track-style minute ring
with luminous dots at five-minute intervals and triangular markers at 15
The rose-gold-coloured hour and minute hands also feature Super-LumiNova treatment
needle-shaped central seconds hand adds a refined touch
A date window at 3 o’clock completes the dial’s functionality
The movement is an automatic Sellita base calibre BE-36AE with a 38-hour power reserve
The Bremont Terra Nova 40.5mm Date Bronze is available with a matching bronze bracelet
a green nubuck leather strap with a pin buckle
or a black and green NATO strap featuring a PVD bronze-coloured steel loop
The price is EUR 3,900 for the watches purchased with a strap and EUR 4,300 when paired with a bracelet
Quick facts: 40.5mm x 11.11mm – bronze cupro-aluminium alloy
brushed and polished – sealed steel caseback in bronze PVD – gradient green dial with 3D Super-LumiNova numerals and indices – automatic movement – 28,800 vph – 38h power reserve – EUR 4,300 bronze cupro-aluminium alloy bracelet – EUR 3,900 nubuck leather strap – EUR 3,900 NATO strap
The Terra Nova Bronze Chronograph differs mainly from the stainless steel variant in presentation only
rotating compass bezel with the black polished ceramic insert with engraved markings
The 42.5mm bronze alloy case has a thickness of 14.8mm
the dial is protected by the domed sapphire crystal with AR coating
and the caseback is solid steel with a bronze PVD finish
fluted crown is flanked by satin-brushed chronograph pushers at 2 and 4 o´clock
This Bronze model comes with a green gradient dial; the Arabic numerals and indices are cut from blocks of vintage-toned Super-LumiNova
The pencil hour and minute hands are also treated with Super-LumiNova
the central chronograph seconds hand and small subdials´ hands are rose gold coloured
there is a date window with a dark background
the Terra Nova Chronograph Bronze relies on the automatic BE-50AV (Sellita SW510BH a) calibre
This calibre operates at 28,800 vibrations/hour and has a 56-hour power reserve
Strap options include a green nubuck leather strap with a pin buckle
a black and green NATO strap featuring a PVD bronze-coloured steel loop
and the watch can be paired with a bronze cupro-aluminium bracelet
Prices are EUR 6,400 with a strap and EUR 6,850 when paired with a bracelet
Quick facts: 42.5mm x 14.8mm – bronze cupro-aluminium alloy
brushed and polished – sealed steel caseback in bronze PVD – gradient green dial with 3D Super-LumiNova numerals and indices – hours
date – automatic movement – 28,800 vph – 56h power reserve – quick release stainless steel bracelet EUR 6,850 bronze cupro-aluminium alloy bracelet – EUR 6,400 nubuck leather strap – EUR 6,400 NATO strap
The third reference released by Bremont in the Bronze Terra Nova sub-collection is a limited edition, and it comes with a gradient caramel metal dial, like the one introduced with the limited Terra Nova 40.5 Date in steel last year
The Terra Nova 40.5mm Turning Bezel Power Reserve Bronze features a notched
bidirectional rotating compass bezel engraved with the cardinal signs
crafted in the same Bronze-series alloy as the case
The dial features 3D vintage Super-LumiNova numerals and indices and has a recessed
darker small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock and the power reserve indicator above the 6 o’clock mark
There is a date window at 3 o’clock with a dark background
The watch is powered by the automatic calibre BE-79AL (Sellita base)
operating at 28,800vph and providing 41 hours of autonomy
The Terra Nova 40.5 Turning Bezel Power Reserve Bronze with the caramel dial is worn on a bronze cupro-aluminium alloy bracelet
This variant is limited to 100 pieces; the price is EUR 5,350
Quick facts: 40.5mm x 11.91mm – bronze cupro-aluminium alloy
brushed and polished – sealed steel caseback in bronze PVD – 100m water-resistant – gradient caramel dial with 3D Super-LumiNova numerals and indices – small seconds at 9 o´clock
power reserve indicator at 6 o´clock – automatic movement – 28,800 vph – 41h power reserve – bronze cupro-aluminium alloy bracelet – limited to 100 pieces – EUR 5,350

If my input can be useful: Reach out to me
Dont know if they are hellbent on failure or people started buying
If rolex owned them they’d close them down
I don’t like their new compass rose logo
I was on the verge of pulling the trigger on buying a Bremont under their old propellor logo
But they’ve lost something of their cachet with the rebranding
there is an entry-level micro-brand selling on Catawiki with a very similar logo (pre-existing Bremont’s change)
And I really don’t like the aesthetics of the Terra Nova
Davide just recycling things that worked at Tudor
they have to find the one who is ready to put 5k on these watches and their random movements,if they manage to do it that will be such an achievement…….
Kind of amusing really that every time an article about Bremont is published here
some people (probably the same ones) are quick to criticize
one with the prop logo and the other with the wayfinder
The company I work for went through a major rebranding years ago
Looks like it’s made up from the parts bins of several other brands
If you try and be all things to all people you end up being nothing to anyone
God Awful…..owned by someone with more money than good taste and in denial about how good you have to be at this price point (…better than Bremont that’s for sure) Even if I had butchers forearms (which I don’t) these just look way too big & unweildly

the Terra Nova Jumping Hour Bronze is not just another bronze watch—it’s a carefully constructed homage to history
built with a focus on mechanical innovation and long-term wearability
Designed to age with character while performing with reliability
the watch marks a notable addition to Bremont’s growing Terra Nova series and speaks directly to horology enthusiasts with a taste for understated complexity
A Case Built to Weather Time and Tell Stories
At the core of the Terra Nova Jumping Hour is its 38mm cushion-shaped case
crafted from vertically brushed cupro-aluminum bronze
Known for both its strength and corrosion resistance
the material gives the watch a distinct tone out of the box and allows for a natural patina to develop over time
That aging process is intentional—each piece will evolve uniquely based on the wearer’s habits
Unlike highly polished cases that beg for constant buffing
the Terra Nova’s brushed finish embraces imperfection
brings out the raw elegance that military watches from the World War I era first introduced to the wristwatch format
Jumping Hour Complication Meets British Craftsmanship
Bremont has partnered with movement specialist Sellita to bring the BC634 caliber to life
The movement powers a montre à guichet-style display—a rare and eye-catching complication known as the “jumping hour.” Instead of traditional hands sweeping across a dial
time is revealed through a series of apertures that digitally flip from hour to hour
The jumping hour window is accompanied by additional readouts for the minutes and seconds
giving the display an organized yet unconventional feel
almost minimalist vibe without sacrificing visual intrigue
underscores Bremont’s interest in engineering timepieces that aren’t just beautiful to wear but intellectually satisfying for collectors
And while the jumping hour isn’t new to watchmaking
seeing it interpreted through a British lens—especially with design roots that tie back to military use—offers something truly distinct
Bremont has always done well to stand apart from Swiss-dominated narratives
and the Terra Nova Jumping Hour is a prime example of that independent spirit
Buyers of the Terra Nova Jumping Hour Bronze have the option of pairing the case with either a matching vertically brushed bronze bracelet or a vintage-style tan leather strap
Each option brings out different aspects of the watch’s personality
The bronze bracelet keeps things bold and uniform
allowing the entire case and band to develop a cohesive patina
It leans heavily into the idea of the watch as armor—chunky
introducing warmth and a more casual wearability that ties into the vintage military inspiration
It’s the kind of strap that pairs just as easily with a flight jacket as it does with a worn-in tee and denim
This flexibility in styling is key to the Terra Nova’s appeal
and individuality—an ideal fit for those who appreciate design that tells a story over time
Only 100 Made: Exclusivity Meets Intentionality
Bremont didn’t flood the market with this release—and that’s part of the draw
the Terra Nova Jumping Hour Bronze becomes more than just a new addition to the brand’s catalog
and a representation of craftsmanship rooted in both heritage and innovation
This kind of limited run also reflects Bremont’s growing presence in the high-end watch market
While the brand continues to evolve its manufacturing capabilities in Britain
releases like the Terra Nova speak to a deliberate
small-batch approach that prioritizes quality over scale
The Bremont Terra Nova Jumping Hour Bronze is a nod to history without feeling like a costume piece
engineering—yet rich with references that lend it emotional and aesthetic weight
and materials that are made to age gracefully
this release is bound to resonate with both seasoned collectors and newcomers looking for something different from the usual suspects
it’s positioned as a serious piece of horology—but one that earns its value through thoughtful detail and deliberate design
For those interested in adding something tactile
and slightly unconventional to their collection
this is a piece worth watching—and wearing

National Parks in Crisis
“Are you a birder?” the woman asked from the front seat of her pickup truck in the parking lot of a Newfoundland national park on New Year’s Eve
“Only for really special birds,” I admitted
well this is a special bird,” the woman’s husband said with a conspiratorial grin
They weren’t birders either. Just a couple of curious folks from a town called Eastport who’d heard how a rare Steller’s Sea-Eagle from Russia had been spotted here in Terra Nova National Park and figured they’d make the 25-minute drive to look for it
The Newman Sound area of Terra Nova National Park is also the Terra Nova Migratory Bird Sanctuary/Jennifer Bain
well aware that the odds of spotting a single bird on a single day in a 154-square-mile
ragged-shaped park were astronomically slim
but always looking for an excuse to visit my favorite place in Canada
The Steller’s Sea-Eagle normally breeds in eastern Russia and winters in Japan, Korea and occasionally China. It’s on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species because fewer than 5,000 adults remain in the world
This rare bird sometimes makes its way to Alaska
but since 2021 it has been spotted in Texas
New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador
Stella — as some people call the lone raptor
figuring she’s female because she’s huge — has been summering in Newfoundland since 2022
I inadvertently looked for her once in 2023 when Robert “Skipper Bob” Bartlett took me boating with Trinity Eco-Tours
Stella was nowhere to be seen that memorable spring day in Iceberg Alley
but that year there was a bumper crop of icebergs
Terra Nova National Park opened one of its roads from Dec
21 to 31 so birders could look for a rare Steller's Sea-Eagle/Jennifer Bain
What drew me to Newfoundland on short notice for New Year’s Eve
was the fact that Stella showed up in a national park in December
“We have an unusual visitor in the park!” Parks Canada announced in a Dec
21 Facebook post that soon made headlines across the country
“A Steller’s Sea Eagle — one of the world's largest birds of prey
which has a wingspan of 8 feet and weighs about 13 pounds
these birds are about 25% larger than a Bald Eagle
They’re usually found in the Russian Far East
With fewer than 5,000 of them in the world
this is the only one of its kind known to be in the Western Hemisphere.”
The seasonal park closed in October and wasn’t set to reopen until May
but Parks Canada made the unusual move of reopening the Newman Sound Day Use Area Road from Dec
21 to 31 “to let visitors see this fantastic bird” between 11 a.m
(Warm temperatures and minimal snow to plow helped make this possible.)
The Terra Nova Migratory Bird Sanctuary is alongside Terra Nova National Park
A Steller's Sea-Eagle was spotted in December in the lower portion of the sanctuary/Canadian Wildlife Service
I was also glum because the Christmas Bird Count in Rouge National Urban Park near my Toronto home had just been rained out
So instead of joining North America’s longest-running citizen science project on a guided hike in Ontario
I searched alone for Stella in an entirely different province as a consolation prize
“Good luck!” Jared Clarke said when I announced my intentions on Facebook
“It hasn't been seen since Dec 26 (neighbouring Port Blanford)
Bird the Rock's Jared Clarke leads a private winter birding tour of Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site in December 2017/Jennifer Bain
I went to Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site once with Clarke
owner of Newfoundland-based Bird the Rock bird and nature tour company
He calls Stella “a mega mega rarity.” Hikers first saw it along the East Coast Trail near Bauline
Kayakers saw it next near Spaniard’s Cove in Trinity Bay
people on whale-watching boat tours out of Trinity often saw it along the coast
Clarke has seen the “dream bird” four times
“My first time I managed to see it (rather distantly) by hiking out to the cove it was originally found in back in 2022 on a beautiful day — a very exciting encounter after I waited with bated breath for two hours in hopes it would appear
I saw it twice from boat tours in summer 2023
and again this summer — every time as wonderful as the rest
especially when sharing it with folks who were equally excited as me.”
At the Newman Sound Day-Use Area of Terra Nova National Park
birders spotted a Steller's Sea-Eagle from this viewing platform in December/Jennifer Bain
My journey involved a two-and-a-half hour drive from Newfoundland’s capital (St
John’s) to Terra Nova on the last day of the park’s special opening
I scoured two Facebook groups — Bird Lovers of Newfoundland and Steller’s Sea Eagle in Canada — for word of sightings and called the park’s administration office for intel just as I arrived
would you mind calling me back and letting me know,” a park official asked after conceding there hadn't been any recent sightings
According to eBird
the Steller's Sea-Eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus) is an immense eagle with a large head and massive
The adult is striking with rich brown coloring and snow-white tail
botanist and zoologist who emigrated to Russia and changed his name to the Russian-friendly Steller
He was a naturalist aboard the Great Northern Expedition that attempted to map a northern sea route from Russia to North America from 1741 to 1742
While stranded on what’s now Bering Island
Steller was the first to describe numerous North American plants and animals so the Steller’s Sea-Eagle
Steller sea lion and Steller’s Jay now bear his name
The Coastal Trail in Terra Nova National Park cuts through prime eagle-viewing territory in an oceanside boreal forest/Jennifer Bain
The Steller’s Sea-Eagle feasts in open waters along coastlines and lakes
It gorges on salmon in its Russian breeding grounds
gulls and carrion (the decaying flesh of dead animals)
I set off on foot from the Newman Sound Day-Use Area parking lot
I scoured the sea in vain from two viewing platforms where others had recently stood and spotted the famous eagle in the distance
Thankful that winter hadn’t really started
I strolled along the popular Coastal Trail through boreal forest and down to the Atlantic Ocean at low tide
Terra Nova is proudly home to multiple nesting pairs of Bald Eagles but none were around. Parts of the park flank the Terra Nova Migratory Bird Sanctuary
There are 92 of these sanctuaries across the nation and they're run by the Canadian Wildlife Service of Environment and Climate Change Canada
An American red squirrel forages along the Coastal Trail in Terra Nova National Park on a warm December day/Jennifer Bain
The Southwest Arm portion of the sanctuary freezes in winter
but Newman Sound doesn’t so it's a year-round waterfowl hotspot
I paused to photograph an American red squirrel
I heard Chickadees and startled several species of ducks
I hoped a bulky shadow on shore was Stella but alas it was a gorgeous Common Merganser (and yes I realize they look nothing alike)
Mindful that the December sun sets early in Newfoundland, I called it a day well before the park closed its gates at 4 p.m. so I could make it safely back to St. John's. In a province where motorists collide with hundreds of moose every year along the highways
it's wise to avoid driving between dusk and dawn
A Common Merganser rests by open water in Newman Sound in Terra Nova National Park in December/Jennifer Bain
But the next morning I called Sandra Moss to hear how she lucked into multiple sightings
The retired IT support analyst for the Department of National Defence lives in Eastport (just like that couple in the truck)
just an amateur photographer who likes to shoot landscapes
wildlife and “slow birds” like Bald Eagles and puffins
Moss first saw Stella from a distance from Skipper Bob’s whale-watching boat back in 2023 in Trinity Bay
she and her husband heard the famous eagle was in their area but when they couldn’t drive through Terra Nova’s gates they launched their boat from a nearby village and scoured the shoreline
she hiked around Newman Sound like I did but then followed a park worker/friend to a Parks Canada boat launch and spotted Stella not even 200 feet away
“I only had 10 minutes until they closed the gate again,” Moss remembers
“She was on the shoreline in that tall tree
I was so excited I didn’t know what to do with myself
The day that amateur photographer Sandra Moss got a good look at this Steller's Sea-Eagle in Terra Nova National Park
she took about 500 shots in 10 minutes/Sandra Moss
Moss took about 500 photographs during that brief but incredible encounter
She shared some of her shots with the park for its Facebook post and others with various news outlets — publicity that led me to Newfoundland and then eventually to her
She soon saw Stella again from one of the park's viewing platforms
but the celebrity bird wasn't close enough for a decent shot
“She’ll show up somewhere else,” predicts Moss
pointing out that “last year she was on the missing list for a couple of months.”
Clarke also expects the rare but well-known bird will winter in his province
feeding from ice-free bays and staying away from prying eyes before returning to Trinity Bay for a fourth summer
He figures he knows why this wayward Steller's Sea-Eagle has stuck around for so long
“this bird has explored a wide swath of North America and somehow managed to fall in love with Newfoundland.”
Terra Nova National Park opened the road to the Newman Sound Day-Use Area so birders could hunt for a rare Steller's Sea-Eagle/Jennifer Bain

the largest single horticultural wholesale market in China
This marks Terra Nova’s third spring sale season at the Guangzhou Lingnan Flower Wholesale Market through its partnership with licensee Chongqing Tianmu Agriculture
The Guangzhou Lingnan Flower Wholesale Market is open to the public and horticulture trade year-round
Terra Nova worked with Chongqing Tianmu Agriculture to force and finish a selection of Terra Nova’s top-performing varieties for the Guangzhou Lingnan Flower Wholesale Market
The plants developed at a high-elevation nursery with cooler temperatures before being transported to Guangzhou
The warm and humid climate in Guangzhou allows these varieties to bloom as early as February
while plants in other regions are still dormant
as the southernmost province in mainland China
experiences the earliest spring,” said Kevin Chen
“While other regions in China are still unable to source finished flowers or plants
the varieties we’ve coordinated with Chongqing Tianmu Agriculture are already blooming or reaching maturity in Guangzhou
We believe this early performance will translate into strong sales and successful market reception.”
Specific Terra Nova varieties sold at the market include Heuchera ‘Fire Alarm’
Verbascum ‘Plum Smokey’ and Verbascum ‘Sugar Plum’

It’s just one tree, but it’s a balsam fir that I planted and get to watch grow knowing I’ve helped Terra Nova National Park boost the biodiversity of its forest
Now I have incentive to do more than whiz through Canada’s most easterly park on my way to my summer cottage in Fogo Island in Newfoundland and Labrador
It’s a much more subtle wilderness park that protects boreal forest
Sure, it’s a Dark Sky Preserve and you might luck into seeing whales and icebergs from shore, but camping is the biggest draw. There's a 27-mile stretch of Trans-Canada Highway through the park and a lot of people drive straight through. We usually only stop when nature calls
The Terra Nova National Park team meets at the Forest Demonstration Plot to plant balsam fir seedlings in August/Jennifer Bain
But this summer I did stop and explored three reasons to protect the park's trees. First I experienced the Plant-A-Tree program, part of Canada’s 2 Billion Trees commitment to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss by 2031. Anyone can join the special weekly program in July and August
but I met Parks Canada’s team for a private session
“People tend to be very excited that they can put trees in the park and then monitor them over the coming years,” Conservation and Restoration Program coordinator Hilary Turner told me
We met at the Forest Demonstration Plot by the moose exclosure on the road to the Blue Hill lookout
Turner brought Hayley Feltham (a resource conservation technician)
several summer interns and a tray of balsam fir seedlings
Terra Nova is planting trees in this Blue Hill meadow that was overbrowsed by moose
which aren't native to the island/Jennifer Bain
Five interpretive signa on a platform overlooking the plot relayed the backstory
the area you see before you was a dense forest made up of a mixture of balsam fir
black spruce and various hardwoods,” the first sign read
“This type of forest was typical in the park.”
Spruce budworm and hemlock looper first attacked this area in the 1980s and 1990s — a natural occurring process of forest regeneration
opening the forest canopy and allowing sunlight to reach the forest floor to help seedlings take root
Newfoundland motorists must beware of moose
as this sign in Gros Morne National Park warns/Jennifer Bain
But moose “browsed” (devoured) the new growth
killing or severely damaging the next generation of forest
Forested areas that are taken over by grass and shrubs are nicknamed “moose meadows.”
Moose aren’t native to the island of Newfoundland
they weigh up to 1,300 pounds and are a beautiful menace
They’re prone to running across roads so if you hit one — dawn or dusk are especially dangerous — you can be killed or your vehicle might be totalled
The voracious herbivores eat at least 44 pounds of twigs a day and love young balsam fir
In Terra Nova’s visitor center on the shore of Newman Sound
there’s a clear box that contains one day’s food for a single moose
Just imagine what a year’s worth of browse — 16,000 pounds — looks like and how that damages the face of this park
This moose exclosure can be found at Terra Nova's Forest Demonstration Plot on the way to the Blue Hill Lookout/Jennifer Bain
Terra Nova has been building moose exclosures (fenced plots of land) since the mid-1990s to prevent moose from eating young trees
When I peered into the one by the Forest Demonstration Plot
I could see exactly how a healthy forest should look
“In the absence of predators and with an abundant food supply
the moose population has increased dramatically across the island,” the signage continued
“Parks Canada was faced with a very difficult choice — do nothing
and allow moose to permanently change the forest in our park or begin a major intervention.”
The park started a controlled moose harvest in 2011. This season there will be 25 regular and 15 not-for-profit moose hunting licences issued through the provincial draw system
relieve the browsing pressure on young trees and allow a healthy boreal forest to return
Terra Nova National Park has been inviting visitors to help plant trees and then watch them grow/Jennifer Bain
Which brings us back to the balsam fir that I planted
The Plant-A-Tree program hopes to encourage some of the park's 40,000 annual visitors to connect with — and restore — the forest through conservation action
People plant tree seedlings (grown at a nursery from seeds collected in the park)
The program ran in July and August this year
Visitors label the tree seedlings that they plant with these personalized tags/Jennifer Bain
dropped a seedling into the hole and patted the dirt down
Then I scrawled my name on the aluminum plant tag that helps identify these trees to Parks Canada and the people who planted them
I wrote “Bain” on mine — etching the letters into the pliable tag — but spotted one that said “Terra Nova Tree” and another that said “bf-14N.” That’s Parks Canada code for “balsam fir” and the fact is was the 14th natural (not planted) tree marked here
“Hopefully the wind doesn’t blow it or the crows don’t take them,” Feltham said
and I pictured a gleeful bird feathering its nest with my silver tag
Terra Nova is home to some blue felt lichen
a species of special concern that usually lives on old-growth yellow birch
mature trembling aspen or even white spruce trees/Parks Canada
there was time to see two of Terra Nova’s tree-loving species at risk
starting with Degelia plumbea — blue felt lichen
This leafy lichen is blue-grey topped with red-brown to black apothecia (its fungal partner)
Pollution is a threat to this sensitive species of special concern
So are moose whose browsing reduces the old-growth yellow birch
mature trembling aspen and white spruce trees it lives on
The Parks Canada team took me to the forest steps away from the Newman Sound Campground kiosk to see this strangely beautiful lichen on a couple of aspens
Resource conservation technician Hayley Feltham points to blue felt lichen above red flagging tape/Jennifer Bain
but Feltham said lichen changes color when it’s wet and these two patches will be almost white by winter
She carries a spray bottle for surveys in late fall and winter and ties red flagging tape around trees with rare lichen on them
she’ll put one ribbon above it and another below it
tying a knot in the ribbon and lining it up where the lichen is
Should I ever find myself near the campground again
I'll know exactly where to go to check in on this lichen
Should I ever run into another park tree with red flagging tape on it
I'll know to take a closer look for lichen
Terra Nova is home to the elusive Newfoundland marten
a threatened species and relative of the American marten/Parks Canada
The final tree-loving species I hoped to see was the Newfoundland pine marten (Martes Americana atrata)
This omnivore with an orange throat patch and dark brown fur is part of the weasel family and a sub-species of American marten
It loves conifer forests with plenty of canopy closure
The marten was once on the verge of extinction because of trapping
snaring and habitat loss but has been rebounding
There were an estimated 630 and 875 on the island in the mid-1980s
When that number dropped to about 300 a decade later
Now there are between 286 and 556 adults and the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) has downgraded the marten to threatened
The wildlife underpass at Terra Nova's Southwest Brook day-use area/Jennifer Bain
Terra Nova runs a marten reintroduction program and reports the animals are doing well and beginning to disperse to areas outside the park
The population is still at risk because of snaring and trapping outside of protected areas
Staff like Feltham monitor the health of the population by live-trapping martens and collecting biophysical information such as age
but did visit the Southwest Brook day-use area — not far from the Forest Demonstration Plot — to see one of Terra Nova’s four wildlife underpasses that help animals safely cross under the Trans-Canada Highway to find food
A Newfoundland marten scurries through a wildlife underpass in Terra Nova National Park
This image was caputred by a remote camera installed in the culvert/Parks Canada
We didn't luck into seeing the elusive martens
But I saw a culvert cam photo of one racing through the underpass on a ledge over the water
staff recaptured three martens that had already been tagged plus two new ones they named Ruby and Willy
my family enjoyed outdoor time by the visitor center
Kids adore the touch tank full of sea stars and rock crabs
and everyone loves the aquariums showcasing local lobster
There’s an impressive birch bark canoe like the kind the Mi’kmaq people once used to navigate the interior of Newfoundland
I only had eyes for the taxidermied Newfoundland marten and the upbeat message written alongside its display case
“With continued vigilance and protection," an interpretive sign said
the animal "is becoming a lasting success story of rebound and recovery." We got back in the car and hit the highway
certain that we would now make time for Terra Nova when we pass through
to keep tabs on my growing tree and perhaps even go for a quick kayak
the only Newfoundland marten you're likely to see at Terra Nova is in a display case in the visitor center/Jennifer Bain
it was first presented as an instrument with classic colours and purposeful complication
including a chronograph and a version with a compass bezel
it’s a bit of an unexpected release that we’ll talk about… A pink dial at Bremont
housed in the most compact watch of the collection
This new Terra Nova 38 Pink will surely create mixed reactions
as it marks a strong rupture with the classic codes of the brand
Bremont is under a deep restructuring and this new watch once again shows it
Designed to “demonstrate the versatility of the Terra Nova collection” and “add a refreshing contrast and a British sense of daring to the robust field watch design,” as explained by the brand
this new watch is all about its dial colour
While other editions of the Terra Nova 38 were available in anthracite or white
The matte base is coloured in a light shade of pink with the 3D blocks of SLN and the hands in white
this Terra Nova 38 Pink has a time-only display with only minutes and hours
the size of the logo and printings has been reduced
Worn exclusively on a 90L steel bracelet, with a folding clasp and quick-change system, the Terra Nova 38 Pink is released as a limited edition of 250 pieces, priced at EUR 3,600 or GPB 3,000. For more details, please visit Bremont.com
I think someone posted this comment before
you don’t Have to cover Davide’s Bremont you know
The judge would completely understand as soon as he looked at the cover photo of the watch on your homepage
and “add a refreshing contrast and a British sense of daring to the robust field watch design,”…

Two of Universal’s new Epic Universe area hotels, Stella Nova and Terra Luna
If you’re looking to stay at one of these two hotels on your upcoming trip
you may be wondering which one is better to stay at
We’ve experienced both of the sister hotels and we can tell you for sure that there are certainly some perks to one that the other doesn’t have
and it may just be what sways your decision
There’s one major perk to staying at Stella Nova that its sister hotel doesn’t have
and that’s the walking path to Epic Universe
We tested this path out ourselves and it takes around five minutes to walk from the front of the hotel to the crosswalk that would take you across the street to the entrance to Epic Universe
While buses are still available at this hotel for those who aren’t interested in walking
we have a feeling those will get very crowded during opening and closing times
so having a second option can be a major perk for many people
if you don’t think you’d use this walking path at all
if you’re looking for a hotel that has really unique theming
you’ll enjoy this hotel more than Terra Luna
The space theming at Stella Nova is really out of this world (pun very much intended)
and extends from the entrance looking like you’re entering a black hole
and even the rooms having more of a darker space theme
We think this makes the hotel really intriguing for those that are interested in this theme
if you really couldn’t care less about it
don’t count it as a perk in your book
But if you’ve got space-loving kiddos or you’re just looking for something a little different
it may be exactly what you’re looking for
Finally, while Stella Nova doesn’t have a free-standing Starbucks like many of the other Universal Orlando hotels, you will find a few Starbucks options located at Cosmos Cafe and Market
It won’t be the full menu you may be used to
Terra Luna doesn’t go as heavy on the space theme and is overall brighter
if you’re looking for a more casual hotel experience or you don’t want a ton of theming
this is likely the hotel you’ll prefer
Additionally, while the dining options at Stella Nova weren’t bad at all, we were WILDLY impressed with the dining options at Terra Luna — specifically over at Omega Cafe and Market
There’s a phenomenal burger over here called the Terra Burger we’ll be dreaming about for days
and there are tons of options for both picky and adventurous eaters
a walking path to Epic Universe could be added to this hotel in the future
we don’t see how it would be possible
that means there will be MORE construction around this hotel after everything else has already been complete
If that’s something that you may find bothersome on your vacation
We really don’t think there’s a wrong choice here
so whichever hotel you choose for you and your family
Be sure to stay tuned to AllEars for all the latest Universal Orlando news

CA – A 64-year-old wood shop teacher at Terra Nova High School in Pacifica was arrested on Tuesday following allegations of sexual assault against a female student
who has been teaching at the school since November 2015
faces charges of lewd acts with a minor and sexual battery
The Pacifica Police Department (PPD) reported that the alleged incidents occurred between October 31
Spinetti was taken into custody on a $100,000 warrant and subsequently booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City
The PPD has expressed concern that there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward
While specific details about the alleged crimes have not been disclosed
the police are actively seeking more information
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the case or knowledge of similar incidents involving Spinetti to contact the PPD
the PPD has made available several resources to help parents educate their children about sexual abuse
These materials aim to support families in addressing this sensitive topic and promoting safety
Victims of sexual abuse by educators face not only emotional trauma but also complex legal challenges
In a conversation with California sexual abuse attorney Jason Amala
we explore the rights available to victims and their families
how civil lawsuits can hold negligent parties accountable
and the steps survivors can take to seek compensation for their suffering
This discussion provides valuable information for those impacted by such cases
offering a pathway to understanding legal protections and responsibilities
Esq.: What legal recourse do victims of teacher sexual abuse have in California
Esq.: Victims of sexual abuse by teachers or other school employees have the right to pursue civil lawsuits against both the individual perpetrator and the school district
These lawsuits can seek compensation for various damages
Banville: How long do victims have to file a lawsuit in these cases
Amala: California law has expanded the statute of limitations for childhood sexual abuse cases
Victims now have longer to report incidents of childhood sexual abuse
This extended timeframe allows many survivors to seek justice
Banville: What responsibilities do schools have in preventing and responding to sexual abuse
Amala: Schools have a legal duty to supervise students and enforce rules necessary for their protection
The standard of care expected is that of a person of ordinary prudence charged with similar duties
teachers and school staff are mandated reporters
They have a legal obligation to report any suspected abuse to law enforcement or child welfare services
Failure to do so can result in criminal penalties
Banville: How can parents or victims start the process of holding negligent parties accountable
Amala: The first step is to consult with an experienced sexual abuse attorney
Many offer free consultations to discuss the merits of the case and potential legal options
It’s crucial to gather any available evidence
An attorney can help guide victims through the process of filing a claim and seeking justice
Banville: What advice do you have for families affected by teacher sexual abuse
Amala: It’s important to remember that while no amount of compensation can undo the trauma
a lawsuit can provide financial support for recovery
and other damages resulting from the abuse
Legal action can also help prevent future incidents by holding institutions accountable and forcing changes in policies and procedures
Families affected by teacher sexual abuse don’t have to face this challenging situation alone
If you or a loved one has experienced such trauma
