Ferran Torres is undoubtedly the breakout player of the season in Flick's Barça
The Valencian forward has surprised both locals and outsiders with extraordinary performance
becoming one of the team's main protagonists
His numbers speak for themselves: 18 goals and 4 assists in just 1,600 minutes played
Ferran Torres, Key in the Cup | @FCBarcelonaHis moment came again in the Copa del Rey final, where he was key with the equalizing goal against Real Madrid that reactivated the team
In a match where the pressure and demands were at their peak
Ferran once again showed that he is ready to lead Barça from the '9'
Ferran has established himself as an ideal game-changer for Flick's system
His ability to shake up matches from the bench
and his mentality have been crucial in many phases
but in which he has excelled at a high level
Robert Lewandowski celebrating a goal | @FCBarcelonaWith Lewandowski in the final stretch of his career
Ferran has become the great replacement for the Pole
has known how to interpret the game between the lines
capable of breaking lines and finishing with force
Ferran's great performance has had a direct effect on the club's sports planning
Barça continues to deal with an exceeded salary cap
which seriously complicates the possibility of making big signings in the forward line this summer
the emergence of the Valencian represents a solution of enormous value
Added to this is the recent decision by Robert Lewandowski
who has already communicated to the club his intention to continue next season
Barça seems to have one of the most sensitive areas of the field covered
In this regard, one of the names that had been linked to Barça has been ruled out. It is Jonathan David, the Lille forward whose contract ends this season
According to the 'Madrid-Barcelona portal'
the footballer offered himself to the club through his entourage
but the sports management has already decided not to sign him
With Ferran at his best and Lewandowski committed to staying
the signing of another center forward is practically ruled out.

Use code "HERO" and witness GFC vs. the Chicago Stars on May 4th.
Forward Ella Stevens returned to Gotham FC’s starting lineup to face her former team, the Chicago Stars, this afternoon at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
Stevens, who is making her fifth start of the season, represents one of two changes to coach Juan Carlos Amóros’s lineup following last Saturday’s 3-0 win at Washington, with Taryn Torres also joining the midfield.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET in Harrison, New Jersey, with CBS carrying the national broadcast.
Stevens, 27, has an assist this season, a cross headed in by the league’s leading scorer, Esther González, in the 3-1 win over North Carolina. Last year, the Georgia native scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Chicago, heading in the finish in the 90th minute.
The 26-year-old Torres will start for the fourth time this season and 14th in her NWSL career, all with Gotham FC, the team that selected her in the 2021 NWSL Draft. She has registered 263 minutes through her first five appearances, including 90 in the resounding victory at Angel City.
With Stevens and Torres moving into the starting lineup, Nealy Martin moves to defense. The versatile Martin, who will wear the captain’s arm band, is making her seventh start and eighth appearance this season. Stevens steps in for the injured Gabi Portilho, who is out with a hip ailment.
Brazilian star Geyse pairs with González and Stevens across Gotham FC’s front line. It will be her second consecutive start – and fifth appearance – since joining the club via loan from Manchester United. The 27-year-old has been a menace on the flanks, scoring a goal and being involved in a handful of other goal-creating moments.
González, the NWSL Player of the Month for April, is on a goal-scoring tear, with seven scores in four matches thanks to three braces (two goals in a match). The NWSL MVP candidate has finished in a variety of ways – with her head, off set pieces, in the run of play and from a penalty.
Jaelin Howell and Sarah Schupansky, who have both started every game this season, once again line up together in the midfield with Torres. Howell has played every minute, while Schupansky scored her first professional goal last week in Washington (and added an assist).
Emily Sonnett and Lilly Reale, two NWSL Best XI of the Month for April selections, will anchor the defensive corps with Martin and Brazilian fullback Bruninha, who is set for her fourth start.
Reigning NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year Ann-Katrin Berger takes up her usual spot between the posts, aiming for her fourth shutout of the campaign.
In welcome news, goalkeeper Ryan Campbell, defender Mandy Freeman and midfielder Sofia Cook – all previously injured and out – are available and on Gotham’s substitutes bench. Forward Midge Purce is also in the subs group after making her Broadway debut this past week.
Goalkeeper Michelle Betos; defender Emerson Elgin; midfielder Stella Nyamekye; and forwards Khyah Harper and Mak Whitham round out the Gotham FC substitutes list.
Goalkeeper Shelby Hogan; defenders Jess Carter and Tierna Davidson; midfielder Rose Lavelle; and forwards Portilho and Jéssica Silva were previously listed as out for today’s match via the NWSL availability report.
Substitutes: 12 – Ryan Campbell (GK), 33 – Michelle Betos (GK); 17 – Mak Whitham, 21 – Sofia Cook, 22 – Mandy Freeman, 23 – Midge Purce, 24 – Emerson Elgin, 34 – Khyah Harper, 90 – Stella Nyamekye
The New York congressman sparred with Mayor Eric Adams
who said he had no authority to cancel the performance
Kehlani at the Fashion Trust U.S Awards 2025 held at The Lot at Formosa on April 08
Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) is calling on New York City officials to cancel a Central Park performance at a city-sponsored event by Kehlani
a performer who has called for the destruction of Israel and Zionism
Kehlani is set to perform in June at a Pride event sponsored by the City Parks Foundation
an independent nonprofit that receives city funding to promote arts
education and other programming in city parks
But Mayor Eric Adams has disputed whether the mayor’s office has any ability to cancel the performance or withhold funds
Kehlani has posted repeatedly on her Instagram stories calling to “DISMANTLE ISRAEL
ERADICATE ZIONISM,” and calling Zionists “the scum of the Earth.” The performer has also reposted content expressing support for “resistance in all of its forms,” describing Zionists as “evil,” saying that “no one should feel comfortable or safe until Zionism is extinguished” and characterizing all Israelis as settlers
“There is only one solution Intifada revolution” and “Long live Palestine
Torres highlighted Kehlani’s anti-Israel rhetoric in a letter to Mayor Eric Adams
City Parks Foundation Executive Director Heather Lubov and Live Nation Entertainment CEO Michael Rapino
“Our public institutions have a duty to ensure that taxpayer dollars are never misspent on subsidizing or sanitizing antisemitism — especially under the banner of a Pride Event.”
adding “her rhetoric flatly contradicts the spirit of Pride Month
which is and must remain a celebration of love and inclusion — not hate and exclusion.”
Torres has also traded messages with Adams about the event on X.
Adams said that the Parks Department “does not select
and does not fund the City Parks Foundation at all” and that the only city funding it receives is allocated by city council members
not by the mayor or divisions under his supervision
“Your letter should be addressed to Speaker Adams and her councilmembers who have control over their own discretionary funding,” Adams wrote
“Our administration will not fund organizations that promote antisemitism or any other form of hate.”
Torres himself allocated funding for the City Parks Foundation.
“The City Charter grants the Mayor the authority to impound city funds
You unquestionably have the power to withhold city funding from any organization or event that provides a platform for antisemitism,” adding
“I find it hard to believe that the most powerful elected official in New York City is powerless to act on a city matter involving city funds.”
The Parks Department, which falls under the mayor’s supervision, also has a contract with the City Parks Foundation to permit festival operations in Central Park
Torres said he also planned to reach out to Capitol One

There was a terrific finish to the women’s 20km at the fourth Korzeniowski Warsaw Race Walking Cup – a World Athletics Race Walking Tour Gold meeting – on Sunday (4)
A third 2025 duel between Paula Torres and Kimberly Garcia produced a hat-trick of wins for the Ecuadorean - but this time by just one second
the result was in doubt until the last 50 metres when Torres squeezed out all she could to break the tape just ahead of the two-time world champion
Garcia kept striving to make the all-important gap
Even when both shrugged off the challenge from Viviane Lyra with 3km to go
there was never more than a stride between them until the finish recorded by Torres in 1:28:29
with Garcia only a couple of strides behind
but for a long time she more than held her own against the other two
with a blue kinaesthetic strip protecting her right quad and right arm
augmented by Ecuador’s Magaly Bonilla
followed a few metres back by double world silver medallist Katarzyna Zdzieblo
The initial pace was moderate for a quartet with PBs all comfortably under 1:30:00
but by 3km Zdzieblo was already a distant fourth with the rest of the small field fighting for the minor places
A small increase in tempo was too much for Bonilla
Torres carved the smallest of gaps just past 6km
but the other two quickly closed the gap with all of them detouring past standing puddles left by overnight rain
A 31:18 clocking at 7km was significantly faster
and this time Lyra and Garcia were the pair forcing the pace
It was 44:40 at halfway to underline a race getting serious
a fading Bonilla provided a welcome target for Zdzieblo at 14km
The Pole passed the Ecuadorean to take fourth albeit more than a minute behind the leading three
which proved too much for Lyra despite having race walked faster than the other two this year
while Torres and Garcia upped the gears to the finish
and it stayed that way over the final scintillating lap with Torres taking victory in 1:28:29 to Garcia’s 1:28:30
the men’s race was a comfortable stroll for Toshikazu Yamanishi in 1:20:48
the result was done and dusted very soon after 5km
the new world record-holder put the hammer down and all but disappeared into the distance
but the Japanese lead increased from there to the finish – albeit slowly
and Yamanishi’s teammate Kazuki Takahashi was more than two minutes back in distant third
having covered the rest of the race solo from that 5km split
A bonus for race organiser and race walking great Robert Korzeniowski was greeting Maher Ben Hlima in fourth place
fresh off a Polish record of 2:27:51 over 35km in Dudince in March
and although the pace wasn’t blazing fast
Koga was a casualty just after 3km and quickly went backwards
Takahashi detached almost immediately; Bonfim gave chase and just about held the initial gap to about 15 metres
the second group had absorbed Koga with fourth place now up for grabs
the world record-holder was away and comfortably gone
A glance across as he rounded one of the two 180-degree turns told him all he needed to know as early as 8km
Bonfim wasn’t going down with a fight
The lead was indeed extending metre by metre but it was still only 11 seconds at 11km
Takahashi was isolated in third 1:04 further back
and Ben Hlima was 1:44 behind towing Germany’s Nathaniel Seiler and Harun Bilir (Turkiye)
which left the Pole and the German a free ride to fourth and fifth places
The metronomic leader hit his watch at 15km (1:00:22) 21 seconds in front of Bonfim and 1:36 ahead of Takahashi
Ben Hlima was forging a gap over Seiler – and that final move decided the first five places
Women1 Paula Torres (ECU) 1:28:292 Kimberly Garcia (PER) 1:28:303 Viviane Lyra (BRA) 1:28:544 Katarzyna Zdzieblo (POL) 1:30:335 Valeria Ortuno Martinez (MEX) 1:32:34
Men1 Toshikazu Yamanishi (JPN) 1:20:502 Caio Bonfim (BRA) 1:21:343 Kazuki Takahashi (JPN) 1:22:554 Maher Ben Hlima (POL) 1:23:345 Nathaniel Seiler (GER) 1:23:49
and Torres underscored the deep distrust and economic chaos these enforcement raids foster
hurting entire communities and national supply chains and keeping consumers at home out of fear
“We write with deep concern regarding recent immigration enforcement actions conducted in Pomona
and harmed community trust in law enforcement,” wrote the lawmakers
“Enforcement actions that indiscriminately disrupt immigrant communities – particularly without transparency or local coordination – threaten not only individual rights but also the economic stability and public safety of entire cities like Pomona,” continued the lawmakers
“Pomona’s small businesses are already feeling the impact
The lawmakers highlighted that California’s economy — now the fourth largest in the world — relies on the contributions of immigrant labor
as immigrants and their children make up the majority (55 percent) of California’s workforce
with immigrants alone comprising 34 percent of the state’s population
undocumented immigrants contributed $87 billion in household income
They emphasized that immigrant workers make up a significant portion of California’s leading agriculture
Immigrant construction workers comprise over 40 percent of California’s construction workforce
and are already doing essential work to help Los Angeles County rebuild from the devastating wildfires earlier this year
which would create a pathway to citizenship for immigrant essential workers
“While no one disagrees with targeting violent criminals for deportation
the enforcement actions in Pomona demonstrate that the Department is indiscriminately targeting all noncitizens for removal — including those who have no criminal records and who have been living in and contributing to our communities for decades,” added the lawmakers.“These actions do not make us safer and are contrary to the ideals that we all stand for
We urge you to instead focus enforcement against those who pose a legitimate risk to public safety and to work with Congress on a pathway to citizenship for the immigrants who are essential to our economic success.”
The lawmakers concluded their letter by demanding information on the raids
including why local officials were not notified and what steps DHS is taking to rebuild trust with immigrant communities
“We urge your Department to review these operations carefully and to recommit to an immigration enforcement strategy that prioritizes public safety
and reflects the economic realities and moral values of our nation,” concluded the lawmakers
Full text of the letter is available here and below:
We write with deep concern regarding recent immigration enforcement actions conducted in Pomona
and harmed community trust in law enforcement
the City of Pomona in our home state of California has been at the epicenter of recent immigration enforcement activity
much of which has been conducted without giving notice to local officials:
Enforcement actions that indiscriminately disrupt immigrant communities – particularly without transparency or local coordination – threaten not only individual rights but also the economic stability and public safety of entire cities like Pomona
Pomona’s small businesses are already feeling the impact
While no one disagrees with targeting violent criminals for deportation
the enforcement actions in Pomona demonstrate that the Department is indiscriminately targeting all noncitizens for removal — including those who have no criminal records and who have been living in and contributing to our communities for decades

California’s economy – now the fourth largest in the world – demonstrates the strength and contributions of immigrant labor
Immigrants and their children comprise 55 percent of California’s workforce
Immigrants alone account for 34 percent of the state’s population and paid $168 billion in taxes last year
while generating over $400 billion in spending power
Undocumented immigrants contributed $87 billion in household income and $66 billion in spending power
alongside $50 billion to Social Security and $14 billion to Medicare
in the wake of the destructive wildfires that devastated Los Angeles County earlier this year
immigrant construction workers—who make up more than 40 percent of the workforce in California—are essential to the community’s ability to rebuild and recover
immigrant workers are indispensable to our community
we respectfully request answers to the following:
Why weren’t local officials in Pomona notified about recent enforcement actions
Which federal law enforcement entities were involved in or aware of these enforcement actions
Has DHS responded to local law enforcement’s request for answers
What protocols exist to coordinate with local law enforcement and elected officials before conducting large-scale enforcement actions
How does DHS plan to comply with the April 29
2025 court order from the Eastern District of California barring Border Patrol agents from detaining or arresting individuals without reasonable suspicion of illegal presence
Was California Department of Motor Vehicles data accessed in the case of Martin Majin-Leon
What safeguards exist to prevent improper use of state data for immigration enforcement purposes
What steps is DHS taking to rebuild trust with immigrant communities that have been traumatized by these events
We urge your Department to review these operations carefully and to recommit to an immigration enforcement strategy that prioritizes public safety
and reflects the economic realities and moral values of our nation
Thank you for your prompt attention to this urgent matter

Julien Baker has announced the remainder of her tour with Torres has been cancelled so that she can “focus on her health”
The duo shared their collaborative country album ‘Send A Prayer My Way’ last month and announced an accompanying tour around the US that kicked off in Richmond on April 23.
A handful of those dates went ahead as planned, but on Sunday (May 4), Baker posted a statement on her Instagram confirming that the rest of the tour has been called off in order to prioritise her well-being.
“Due to recent events, Julien Baker is prioritizing her well-being and taking time to focus on her health,” she wrote. “Therefore, the Julien Baker & TORRES ‘Send A Prayer My Way’ Tour has been canceled. This decision was not made lightly, and we understand the disappointment this may cause for fans. We deeply appreciate your understanding.”
A post shared by Julien Rose Baker (@julienrbaker)
The message added that refunds will be provided at the original point of purchase
with Baker thanking fans for their “support and compassion”
The news comes after the duo were also forced to cancel a pair of shows in March
at Ohio University and at Knoxville’s Big Ears Festival
These were called off after “one of our key members sustained a concussion” that would require “the next few weeks” to recover from
Baker and Torres recently spoke to NME about recording their album
with Baker saying: “We talk about this all the time
It’s not like trying to prove someone’s legitimacy or saying it’s a trend
It’s just interesting that there’s a cultural shift happening where people are recognising the…,” she pauses
before her collaborator finds them: “Greatness of this genre.”
NME awarded ‘Send A Prayer My Way’ three stars
writing: “As country music continues to enjoy something of a comeback
the duo’s take on an incredibly storied genre offers up something new and original
Though ‘Send A Prayer My Way’ doesn’t always grip you with the immediacy of either Baker or Scott’s respective solo careers
it’s still refreshing to hear two very well-established songwriters exploring such distinct new territory together.”
In other news, Dacus recently confirmed her romantic relationship with Baker. Baker also recently performed a cover of System Of A Down’s ‘Toxicity’ classic with Jasmine.4.t at SXSW 2025

- The Charleston Battery defeated Hartford Athletic in a thrilling 4-2 comeback win in the USL Championship on Saturday at Patriots Point
the Battery rallied before halftime with goals by Cal Jennings (24′) and Juan David Torres (38′)
Charleston added two more via Houssou Landry (56′) and Torres (64′) to secure their fourth consecutive league win
A pass back to goalkeeper Christian Garner resulted in the ball crossing the byline and granting Hartford a corner kick
The visitors converted the ensuing corner kick via Jordan Scarlett to take a 1-0 lead in the 5th minute
Charleston battled back despite the early deficit and pressed for an equalizer
That pressure led to the first golden opportunity midway through the half
when MD Myers was taken down in the box by Scarlett in the 22nd minute
Cal Jennings stepped up to take the corner and buried it to the right side after sending goalkeeper Antony Siaha the other way
leveling the score at 1-1 in the 24th minute
It was also the seventh first-half goal scored by the Battery so far this season
Charleston’s command on the game began to grow as the team peppered shots at Hartford through the half-hour mark
Emilio Ycaza and Jennings drew blocked shots
and the visitors were held without a shot since their opener for the rest of the half
Torres produced a moment of magic to give the Battery a 2-1 lead in the 38th minute
scoring from outside the box with a laser to the near post that Siaha could only watch go into his net
Arturo Rodriguez found Torres with a switch and the Colombian was given a wealth of space by Hartford to tee up his shot
The goal was Torres’ second of the year and the assist was Rodriguez’s first
Charleston effectively erased Hartford’s quick start by taking the 2-1 lead into halftime
The Battery outshot Hartford 10 to two and held 70% possession in the first stanza
Play resumed for the second half with the Battery beaming with confidence in search of a third goal
quickly advancing forward into Hartford’s defensive third
Houssou Landry was the man of the moment who added to the Battery’s lead in the 56th minute to make the score 3-1
The play was created by Torres at the top of the box
who patiently waited for Houssou to make a run toward goal before chipping the ball over the top to the Ivorian
Houssou then gathered the ball and delivered a strike from the edge of the six-yard box into the goal
The goal and assist were Houssou’s first and Torres’ fourth
were gifted a way back into the game in the 61st minute when Emilio Ycaza was called for a foul on Sebastian Anderson in the box
Michee Ngalina converted from the spot a minute later
Despite Hartford’s apparent bid for a comeback
the Battery swung momentum back in their favor by putting the visitors on the ropes immediately
Jennings nearly struck again in the 63rd minute
but his attempt was saved and went out for a corner kick
Torres took the ensuing corner kick and uncorked a world-class delivery for the Olimpico goal in the 64th minute
while hitting Adrián Diz as it was already crossing the line
As the match wore on after the Battery made the score 4-2
Charleston began to tighten their grip to secure the win
Hartford would not record another shot on target again until the 89th minute
a strike by Deshane Beckford that was saved by Garner
making his first appearance at Patriots Point
nearly scored the Battery’s fifth in the 73rd minute with a strong shot that Siaha saved
Defender Joey Akpunonu asserted his presence in the final stages of the match
making strong interventions in the 76th and 87th minutes to deny his former club a way back into the match
Charleston secured the 4-2 victory over Hartford to kick off the new month
The win was the Battery’s fourth consecutive in league play
The result advances the Battery’s record to 5W-2L-0D (15pts)
placing them in third place in the Eastern Conference
Charleston have now won six points from losing positions in the league
as the Irish midfielder eclipsed 10,000 career minutes played in the USL Championship regular season during the match
Molloy deputized at center-back and turned in an admirable showing with four clearances
Cal Jennings is now tied for the league’s Golden Boot race with six goals
forward Cal Jennings and midfielder Juan David Torres addressed the media after the match
Coach Pirmann on his overall thoughts about the win…
whether it was central areas or overloads in the wide spots
Excellent by Cal and MD to draw the penalty
a great goal going from Arturo to Juan David

Julien Baker has cancelled her tour with Torres
Boygenius star Julien Baker has cancelled the remainder of her joint tour with fellow indie rocker TORRES in order to “focus on her health”
A statement posted on Baker’s Instagram page yesterday (4 May) confirmed that the remainder of the Send A Prayer My Way Tour will no longer go ahead
“Due to recent events, Julien Baker is prioritizing her well-being and taking time to focus on her health
the Julien Baker & TORRES ‘Send A Prayer My Way’ Tour has been canceled,” the post reads
Refunds and ticketing information will be provided by the original point of purchase.”
Baker’s announcement rounds off by thanking her fans for their “continued support and compassion”
Baker and TORRES were meant to perform at the Stable Hall in San Antonio last night
but the show was pulled several hours before it was scheduled to go ahead
when they performed to a sold-out crowd at Tipitina’s in New Orleans
The queer music duo released their debut collaborative country project Send a Prayer My Way on 18 April
with the corresponding US tour kicking off in Richmond on 23 April
While the statement didn’t expand on the “recent events” which led to the tour cancellation
the news comes weeks after the pair were forced to pull out of two shows in March due to an unnamed band member suffering concussion
Baker and TORRES were set to perform and speak at Ohio University and at Knoxville’s Big Ears Festival
A statement published on Instagram at the time read: “Over the weekend one of our key members sustained a concussion and will need to take the next few weeks to recover
Due to this we are forced to cancel the Julien Baker & TORRES’ appearance at Ohio University.”
According to Baker’s website
she and TORRES will resume playing live with a string of festival dates this summer
beginning on 20 June at the Green River Festival in Greenfield
Julien Baker is one third of Grammy Award-winning indie super group Boygenius, alongside Phoebe Bridgers and Baker’s recently confirmed partner, Lucy Dacus.Share your thoughts

Two head-to-head battles stand out at the fourth Korzeniowski Warsaw Race Walking Cup – a World Athletics Race Walking Tour Gold meeting – on Sunday (4)
Caio Bonfim versus Toshikazu Yamanishi and the ongoing battle between Kimberly Garcia and Paula Torres
it could be a hat-trick for Torres over the Peruvian double 2022 world champion having secured victories at Dudince in March at 35km and Rio Maior earlier this month.
Torres set an Ecuadorian record of 2:44:26
Torres broke the tape in 1:29:37: 15 seconds ahead of Garcia
This truly is the 24-year-old’s time
with Olympic champion Brian Pintado working his way back to fitness following surgery on a troublesome groin
this might be the year a female from the country of four Olympic medals
adds another World Championships medal to her country's glittering pile
while Garcia appears to be slowly recovering the shape that made her double world champion three years ago
but clearly likes a visit to the Polish capital
it offers a chance to get closer to Torres
albeit in a distant kind of way – if their last two races are anything to go by
But ready to throw a spanner in those works is Viviane Lyra
race walked a notable 1:28:30 to win the South American Championships in Argentina just last week (25)
That is a considerably better mark than Torres’ PB of 1:28:48 from the Paris Olympics and a 1:22 improvement on Garcia's time from Rio Maior.
A leap to the top of a World Race Walking Tour Gold podium is within reach for the champion steeplechaser turned race walker
The big ‘if’ is whether Lyra recovers from that 20km win just a week before this race
Katarzyna Zdzieblo hopes to impress on home soil
The Polish double 2022 world silver medallist was up with the leaders in 2024 for only a short time
but she did offer a glimpse of former glory with third place in Dudince at 35km in March
it was a minute behind Garcia finishing second
but better than all other performances since those heady days in Oregon at the World Championships
The supporting cast of Valeria Ortuno (Mexico) and Ayse Tekdal (Turkey) will augment a field of 17.
The event will be Yamanishi’s first race since he broke the 20km world record in February
That magnificent 1:16:10 in Kobe was a fantastic return to form by the bespectacled 29-year-old.
The Japanese athlete was more than a minute ahead of second place
but third on the same day was Bonfim in 1:17:37
That mark was a Brazilian record and in contrast to some who race sparingly
Bonfim has already competed four times at top level in 2025
a third and a sixth – the latter a super-fast Tour Gold race in Taicang where he stopped the clock at 1:18:20.
secured in 1:19:09 when finishing behind Pintado to add to his other major championship medals
suggests Yamanishi needs to be in that same February record-breaking form
or an injury for anyone else to break into the top two
Kazuki Takahashi is the race walker to spring one
He was only 13th as his compatriot Yamanishi broke the world record
but a 1:18:23 finish to go with a 2:25:45 35km at Nomi in March is still good enough for fourth in the world rankings at 35km
Completing a trio of top Japanese athletes planning to show Warsaw what they’re about is Yuta Koga
Joining them in the men’s race are Nathaniel Seiler (Germany) and Isaac Palma (Mexico)
who set a Polish record of 2:27:51 for 35km in Dudince

It's rare that I'm still talking about a Christmas gift more than four months after unwrapping it
my wife bought me one of those bird feeders with a camera attached
It allows me to watch birds via lifestream
It also automatically shoots video and still photos of birds that land on my front porch feeder
In addition to the usual suspects that frequent the feeder like grackles
mourning doves and Eurasian collared doves
I've enjoyed regular visits from painted buntings
adding dried mealworms and changing and filling the nearby birdbath daily
There's only one bird that has yet to make an appearance in the feeder: our state bird
I know they mainly eat insects and berries
but I thought the mealworms might attract them
the camera-shy master impersonators are a regular in my yard
serenading me with just about every birdsong in the book
I was pleased this week to learn the mockingbird will remain our state bird ― as it has since 1927 ― despite efforts from lawmakers lobbying for the flamingo or scrub jay
No offense to either of those feathered friends
but what bird provides the joy that a mockingbird does
car alarms and even other non-feathered animals
I was having coffee outside one morning when a terrible squirrel-screech started up in one of the trees
It went on and on until I finally stood up to investigate
It wasn't a squirrel at all but a mockingbird
some believe that females will choose their mates based on their repertoire
Another theory is that mockingbirds use the songs of other birds to try and keep them away from their territory
there are only so many insects and berries to choose from
This year, two bills ― SB 880, from Sen. Ileana Garcia, R-Miami-Dade, and HB 81 from Reps Jim Mooney
R-Lighthouse Point ― would have dethroned the mockingbird from its perch and designated the American flamingo as our state bird and designated the Florida scrub jay as our state songbird
This is the eighth time someone has filed a bill trying to replace the mockingbird as state bird
I hope one of our legislators files something to prevent the bird from ever being replaced
Harper Lee explained why mockingbirds were so special in her iconic novel we all read in high school, To Kill a Mockingbird
"Mockingbirds don’t do one thing except make music for us to enjoy
they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us
That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”
It would be a sin to replace them as our state bird too

When Julien Baker and Mackenzie Scott (who records under the name TORRES) met backstage for the first time after a show in Chicago eight years ago
their small talk veered toward their love of country music
Scott suggested they make a record in the style of Willie and Waylon
‘Wouldn’t that be hilarious if we made a country record?’ And Julien was like
It’s a good thing she asked: Because thirty-nine seconds into the sparse ballad “Dirt”—the opening track of Send a Prayer My Way—a delicate pedal steel appears
and the two lock into spine-tingling harmonies that set the tone for a stunning collaboration
Baker and Scott are two of the most emotionally impactful singer-songwriters of the past ten years
with Baker known for her dynamic work as a solo artist and as one-third of the Grammy-winning trio boygenius
and Scott for her fearless mix of searing rock
That the two would click perhaps isn’t surprising
Both hail from the South—Baker from Memphis; Scott from Macon
Georgia—and were raised in ultrareligious households
Both also identify as members of the LGBTQ community and grew up struggling with their identities
Baker absorbed a lot of Merle Haggard and George Jones while visiting her mother’s family in East Tennessee
it was church music and the nineties country she heard in her brother’s and sister’s cars
with a few “secular” CDs allowed as she got older
“I recognize in Julien that thing that I have
which is always sort of trying to carve out a different way of doing things,” Scott says
“Not just being queer sexually but queer in the larger sense of just being at odds with the environments that we were in.”
There aren’t any honky-tonk rave-ups on Send a Prayer My Way
Baker’s vocals on “Dirt” wrestle with addiction—she has been open about her own battle with substance abuse
“Spend your whole life getting clean / Just to wind up in the dirt,” she sings
Scott numbs her loneliness at the corner bar in the heart-tugging “Bottom of a Bottle,” as the pair’s harmonies flutter angelically overhead
In the folky twang of “Tuesday,” one of the album’s centerpieces
Scott laments the dissolution of a potential relationship because the other woman’s mother disapproved
It’s a song she had attempted to write for years
it came out as stupid young person stuff,” she says
“But finally getting it out made me feel much better
like I never [have to] think about that experience anymore.”
Baker and Scott hadn’t spent much time together in person prior to the recording sessions in Marfa
they sensed something special was happening
Baker plays various string parts on “Tuesday,” layering them over Scott’s loneliness
“I put a freaky Dobro part over the song while she’s baring her soul in one of the most difficult experiences that has ever happened to her,” Baker says
it was a big step for them to become vulnerable with each other
given that they’re both admittedly guarded
their conservative upbringings and shared struggles came to the fore and turned into the bones of the album
with a follow-up stint in Brooklyn because Baker would often take the sound files and
add a banjo solo on a track like the dreamy “Downhill Both Ways.” But the words didn’t need much polishing
“We had to ensure that the lyrics were bulletproof,” Scott says
In the five years since Sierra Hull’s last album
the mandolin wiz joined Sturgill Simpson’s bluegrass band and collaborated with Béla Fleck
That experience shows on A Tip Toe High Wire
where her songwriting rises to meet her musicianship
but on highlights like “Spitfire” and the funky opener
“Boom,” she lets the soaring melodies and introspective lyrics take center stage

Julio Torres performs his show Color Theories at Melbourne international comedy festival from 15 to 20 April
He came out of the gate hot as a rookie and was never too short on slug
Gleyber Torres and the New York Yankees fan base developed a relationship full of complications and frustration across seven years together
Those negative feelings reached a fever pitch in 2024
when Torres bluntly refused to switch to third base and forced Jazz Chisholm Jr
That was probably for the best — Chisholm is a much better defender — but Torres did not always express the team-first
goal-oriented ideals more traditional baseball fans espouse
When it came time to test the free agent market, Torres' departure was practically a foregone conclusion. He wound up with the Detroit Tigers on a one-year, $15 million deal. Freed from the shackles of Yankee Stadium, Torres has been blunt in his assessment of his tenure in the Bronx
"From the beginning (of spring training with the Tigers), I was in the dugout and I saw everybody running first to third,” Torres told The Athletic
Torres looks great through a couple months in Detroit
He's slashing .300/.360/.475 with four home runs
As for the Yankees' infield in his absence

the Yankees are turning to the likes of Oswaldo Cabrera and Jorbit Vivas out of desperation
This is not uncharted territory for either of them
LeMahieu has been more or less durable since arriving in New York
but he's not immune to the occasional injury stint
this isn't his first rodeo with an oblique strain
He's a fun player when he's on the field
but reliability and availability has never been a strength
Torres would be providing significant pop behind the likes of Trent Grishman
Ben Rice and of course Aaron Judge in the Yankees lineup right now
Maybe Torres doesn't experience this sort of revival with a team he so clearly felt uncomfortable with
but even your run-of-the-mill Torres season would be a huge boon for this snakebitten Yankees infield
New York's lineup falls off a cliff once you move past the initial heavyweights at the top
so Torres' .835 OPS looks awfully appealing from afar
It can't help Yankees fans feel any better that Detroit is 20-12
a full 1.5 games better in the AL standings
The Yankees probably felt like letting Torres walk was like getting rid of a headache
Clearly both sides yearned for new experiences
don't be shocked if New York's regret only increases as Torres helps lead the young Tigers into new territory

Gleyber Torres left the New York Yankees for greener pastures in Detroit this winter

The former Yankee noted what's gone right in Detroit in a recent interview
Gleyber struggled on the basepaths and defensively last season
but has shown notable improvements in 2025
and Torres has fawned over AJ Hinch ever since his arrival
“From the beginning (of spring training), I was in the dugout and I saw everybody running first to third,” Torres said, per The Athletic

and as a result he's increased his baserunning IQ
He also has just one error this season at second base
“I feel really good because I’m on the same page with the other boys,” Torres said
“We’re aggressive on the bases but in the same way
Torres' lack of consistency on the basepaths and fielding mistakes were a sore spot for many Yankees fans and even those within the organization
While Gleyber was decent enough at the dish
he even extended innings unnecessarily at second base
a position which doesn't require the same kind of range or flexibility as shortstop
When the Yankees wanted to change Gleyber's position
“Everybody is really mature here,” Torres said
but it’s just like everybody knows what they have to do.”
Perhaps Torres wasn't trying to emphasize the differences between the Yankees and Tigers organizations
but it's tough not to see through these comments
What Torres is succeeding at in Detroit is what he struggled with in New York
and Torres appears to be blaming the Yankees
