computer-controlled opponents in the new Versus AI mode a major update to frag grenades will remove the ability to cook them so players will have to rework their tactics to best employ those deadly offers a snappy response to any Attackers he engages while his AR-15.50 designated marksman rifle (DMR) is modified to use .50 caliber rounds packing a heavy punch that gives him some destructive versatility With the P226 MK25 pistol as his sidearm and a choice of Nitro Cell or Proximity Alarm Tubarão can adapt his playstyle to complement the many uses of his unique gadget The Zoto Canister is a bit like an impact grenade in that Tubarão throws it and the Zoto supercools anything caught in its radius; this means slowing down the movement speed of Operators and disabling or pausing gadgets The iced-out area persists while the gadget is active but eventually the gadget runs out of juice and everything affected resumes normal operation Attackers can thaw things out more quickly by destroying the Zoto canister itself; shooting it will suffice but if they don’t have line of sight to the gadget they can use Twitch or Zero’s gadget lasers Note that the freezing area of effect created by the Zoto Canister doesn’t destroy gadgets or harm Operators; what it does is create a powerful window of opportunity for Tubarão and his team to destroy gadgets or harm Operators Slowing an Operator hinders their movement and reactivity; this has obvious benefits in most engagements but consider deploying a Zoto against an incoming Amaru to negate her speed advantage or against a shield Operator to slow them down while you outmaneuver them let’s take the classic Bandit trick example in which Bandit deploys his unique battery gadget to electrify a reinforced wall that is currently being breached destroying the breach charge just before it completes If Tubarão sees a Thermite hard breach in-progress he can deploy a Zoto canister in the area and instantly (temporarily) disable the gadget he can also react quickly enough to pause a breach from Hibana or Ace it gives Bandit or Kaid or Mute plenty of time to get their gadget denial gear in place the breaching gadget will be destroyed or denied Maverick is a good counter for Attackers looking to breach against Tubarão not stopped; but delaying or denying a breach to help his team hold a wall is one of Tubarão’s strengths Defenders need to be smart when playing off a Zoto freeze because any gadgets they deploy in the frozen area will also be affected To revisit the Bandit trick example: A Bandit battery would activate immediately upon thawing out thus destroying the breach charge; however a Kaid Electroclaw likely won’t have time to engage if it unfreezes at the same time as a breaching gadget Be sure to place denial gadgets just outside the frozen area so they have time to arm before the freezing dissipates which is important to keep in mind because a Zoto canister thrown on a ceiling will freeze the floor above and if an Operator walks on a frozen floor their footsteps will be visible from below But a Nitro Cell won’t work in the frozen area so Tubarão and his Nitro Cell-equipped allies will have to anticipate where their enemies will go and throw accordingly Team up with an intel Operator like Pulse or Solis and you’ve got a deadly combo for defending from below This downstairs/upstairs freezing effect also comes in handy when defending against Ram because the Zoto will pause a BU-GI Auto Breacher in its tracks and act as a powerful new counter against mechanical gadgets And when you consider his synergies with trap Operators like Fenrir and Ela where he can compound the disorienting effects of their gadgets with his Zoto’s slowing effect Tubarão’s resumé as a site anchor is strong But don’t sleep on his roaming capabilities A well-placed Zoto Canister will disable a claymore and allow Tubarão to apply pressure from the Attackers’ flank; a Zoto can also put the chill on Nomad’s Airjab grenades Tubarão’s gadget is versatile and its efficacy in a variety of situations allows him to be useful and impactful throughout the entire round Tubarão will be unlockable at season launch through the Premium Battle Pass and available two weeks later for purchase with Renown or R6 credits The new map coming free to all players in Operation Deep Freeze is Lair a secretive military installation where the masked antagonist Deimos prepares his assaults against Team Rainbow (there’s even a room on the top floor where you can see some of his previous plans) Lair has numerous entry points on each floor so Defenders will have to make the most of the Prep Phase to prepare for aggressive entry A first-floor reception area does double duty as a rocket launch silo providing a cheeky vertical entry point in the middle of the floor plan while a basement-level lab sits smack in the center of the layout surrounded by potential ingress points and flanking routes Players will be able to load into matches on the Lair map at season launch through the Discovery Playlist Map Run is a new training mode designed to help players learn the names and locations of key rooms through the maps of Rainbow Six Siege These names are crucial tools in communication and map awareness and you can practice learning these callouts in two Map Run variants a race from location to location guided by Thermite; learn the names and fastest routes from place to place to enhance your ability to rotate and reposition where you move through the map targeting shooting-range dummies placed in commonly used positions within each room The dummies can even be set to fire back if you prefer to turn up the heat Map Run will feature the Lair map along with six others (Bank Another new training mode coming in Operation Deep Freeze is Versus AI This pits you and your teammates against five AI Defenders who will reinforce walls and play power positions as you try to attack the site Versus AI is a great way to work on the basics of dismantling a site defense against dynamic opponents Operation Deep Freeze is bringing one further update that will impact the way players use one of the deadliest generic gadgets in the game: frag grenades Players will no longer be able to cook grenades (i.e pull the pin and hold the grenade in-hand so as to better control when and where it explodes) Frags will have a standard fuse timer that begins the moment the player throws them and shortens by about one second when the frag hits a surface twice as many Operators will now have access to frags Use a more Rainbow Six Siege players can point to only a few moments where the cornerstone of its meta—breaching—saw upheaval In 2015 the Bandit trick proved Thatcher could be countered in 2018 Maverick offered an unstoppable (but risky) option to brute force a wall Alternate options for breaching charges and EMPs have slotted nicely into the meta since then but I'm not sure anyone is ready for Tubarão Tubarão is the new defender of Operation Deep Freeze entering testing this week and releasing in early December 2-armor operator packing the Zoto canister—a throwable sticky bomb that freezes everything in a few-meter radius Operators who walk in the frozen area of effect are slowed and leave footprints that linger for several seconds All gadgets in the fro-zone are deactivated with very few exceptions He's sort of like having Mute's signal jammer in your pocket and can interrupt breaching charges that have already begun detonating It's an intimidating new piece on the board for attackers who've contended with reinforced walls the same way since 2015 Not even mechanical devices immune to Mute's effects like Ram's breaching bots or secondary hard breach charges Ubisoft has a habit of introducing gadgets that appear to just be better versions of older ones and I do wonder if the Zoto will go on to outclass Mute or even Kaid but I suspect two key weaknesses will rein him in: the Zoto canister can't destroy gadgets on its own Frozen gadgets will thaw out as soon as the canister expires (around 10-12 seconds) to finish their job or a well-thrown impact grenade to clear a wall or else you've only delayed the inevitable It's hard to gauge based on only a few matches with Tubarão but I'm not sure how an attacking team is supposed to reasonably counter someone who can jam up a wall for over 40 seconds of the round (if he uses all four Zoto canisters) Ubi says the lasers from Zero or Twitch's gadgets can destroy the Zoto from within but we all know how unreliable a drone infiltration can be your options are to disrupt wall defense from above (not easy get a frag grenade into the room somehow (sometimes easy if there's a gap above the wall) In an ideal scenario he could be instrumental in zapping away hard breach gadgets he can still waste a lot of time that attackers can't spare And that's only if you're using him for anti-breach Tubarão's reactive throwables allow him to deny drone entry reveal attacker footsteps for an easy vertical attack or simply make a crucial chokepoint much harder to push in a clutch situation The only thing holding Tubarão back is surviving long enough to make a difference Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals I'll be curious to see if Tubarão is as dominant in practice as he sounds on paper He'll arrive in Operation Deep Freeze in December a major nerf to frag grenades (they can't be cooked anymore) Morgan ParkSocial Links NavigationStaff WriterMorgan has been writing for PC Rainbow Six Siege is now gearing up to release another Season, and this time around we’re going to get a get bit cold with Operation Deep Freeze.  With the update looming, there’s no better time to dive into the brand new operator, Tubarão and all we know about him. Each new character in Siege brings a brand new gadget to shake up the meta, and the brand new defender Tubarão is no different. “Feel the chill of the new Zoto Canister. The Zoto Canister is a throwable device that can can slow enemies, freeze devices to pause their deployment and prevent use, and even leave footprints behind if the frozen area is walked on.” In terms of the full kit that Tubarão is going to be able to use, it’s listed as follows. We’re amped to see how this operator shakes up the meta, as he appears to be one of the strongest defenders currently in the game as of now, but we never know until the new season releases soon! Giveaways, gaming gear, our discord channel and more: Rainbow Six Siege is welcoming a new operator to the tactical first-person shooter game developed by Ubisoft Take a look at this anime trailer depicting Tubarão in a race against time with Thunderbird to rescue hostages trapped in Deimos's secret base Tubarão is coming with Operation Deep Freeze with the full reveal on November 12 Akses halaman Opportunities for professionals welcomed last Wednesday (22nd) the maiden voyage of the Berge Olympus a Newcastlemax bulk carrier adapted and equipped with four large each sail installed has an aerodynamic span of 37.5 meters height and 20 meters width and use wind energy to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions The Berge Olympus will save up to 6 tonnes of fuel per day on an average worldwide route and reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 19.5 tonnes per day a shipowner contracted by Vale to transport iron ore which is investing heavily in incorporating cutting-edge efficiency and environmental innovation into maritime transportation The WindWings installation is part of Berge Bulk's ambition to become carbon neutral by 2025 The vessel docked at the Port of Tubarão left China on October 1 and will return to the same country The loading process takes an average of 24 hours Vale is committed to supporting the maritime industry in achieving the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) decarbonization targets created by the company to support the shipping industry in reducing its emissions is carrying out comprehensive studies to welcome vessels with different sail configurations into its ports mooring and loading are evaluated so that the entire operation is carried out without interruption and thus ensuring the high performance of its ports "We are committed to supporting shipowners with their ideas and projects that aim to achieve the IMO's goals of decarbonizing shipping," says Michelle Gonzalez Long-Term Contracts and Operations at Vale "The Berge Olympus is currently performing a medium-term contract for the transportation of iron ore for Vale and we are very excited with the partnership developed with Berge Bulk which facilitated the realization of the project," she adds highlights the importance of this operation "We are proud to welcome the vessel with rigid wings to the Port of Tubarão on its maiden voyage It reinforces how efficient and innovative the fleet of ships that transports ore for Vale is while at the same time consolidating Espírito Santo's pioneering spirit," he says “Berge Bulk is dedicated to innovation and sustainability in maritime transportation The installation of WindWings on the Berge Olympus aligns with our vision to set industry standards for environmental responsibility and efficiency We appreciate the collaboration with Vale and remain committed to pioneering initiatives,” said Berge Bulk’s CEO Media Relations Office - Vale imprensa@vale.com Vale and Petrobras announce a partnership to test fuel with renewable content Vale announces expiration and final results of cash tender offers for notes due 2034 Vale confirms receipt of nomination for candidates for the Fiscal Council Keep updated to Vale's activitys and watch our informative web series to learn more about the company We operate all around the globe sharing our passion for work efficiency and reliability as one of world's largest minning company Vale is committed to positively impact the future working alongside with the society to achieve a more sustainable tomorrow That's why we firmly belive in mantain a clear comunication chanel to us To celebrate the 45th anniversary of this iconic film, Chery Eddy and myself decided to rewatch the movie and have a discussion about it When I say “Jaws,” what’s the first thing you think of Cheryl Eddy: The first moment in the movie that comes to mind is the famous zooming-in-and-out-at-the-same-time shot of Chief Brody sitting on the beach realizing to his horror that the nightmare is true and there’s a shark out there snacking on the beachgoers and it perfectly captures the “OH SHIT” of that moment so well Also “Spanish Ladies,” which is now stuck in my head Lussier: Good choices! Yeah. That shot probably became one of the, if not the most, recognizable shots in the movie. And yes, now we encourage everyone reading to put “Spanish Ladies” on as the soundtrack for this article chilling music he created hasn’t just become an unforgettable part of worldwide culture gives me chills when I’m watching the movie but his more “adventure” themes that play during the second half of the movie are right up there with his Indy and Star Wars stuff many examples of his music completely making and elevating a film And Steven Spielberg would be the first person to agree https://gizmodo.com/star-wars-galaxys-edge-just-won-a-grammy-1841263021 Obviously most people know the stories of why Spielberg had to hide the shark for most of the movie and how that worked to his advantage and it’s more or less a character in the film Do you remember the first time you saw the movie Eddy: I can’t specifically remember the first time But I do remember the first time I learned about Jaws as a thing—when I was around six years old I can’t really remember anything about that trip other than I was afraid of Space Mountain (at Disneyland) and then Jaws jumping out of the water on the Universal Studios tour I was probably too young to see the movie at the time but it made a huge impression on me Lussier: No, I don’t remember either. I feel like it’s always been a part of me like most movies from that late ‘70s, early ‘80s era What I do remember is that my mom used to tell me about the first time she saw the movie and then didn’t go in an ocean for several years when the body pops out of the boat and specifically warned my wife “scary part coming” she still jumped and spilled coffee on herself Eddy: Definitely! The frights still hold up, along with the gross stuff. The crabs creeping all over the body on the beach at the beginning, then when Richard Dreyfuss’ character is ripping into the (not-Jaws) shark to see what’s in there. Brutal especially for a pre-PG-13 movie And he also makes the scene where he’s performing the autopsy on the first victim but his reactions of terror and disgust are almost scarier than anything you do see Your imagination is always scarier than reality Eddy: It’s hard to pick a favorite actor or character…Dreyfuss is so good the supporting characters (the terrible mayor but it doesn’t get much better than Robert Shaw as Quint (Obviously the shark is the BEST character I mean among the human characters of course The fact that he dies makes him kind of the standout We learn about his past a little but for the most part This gruff guy who apparently hunts sharks He’s got all these literal jaws hanging around his place I also never noticed until watching it again recently that he has like a little assistant who follows him around on the land You can really watch it dozens of times and notice new things every time Lussier: Well let’s jump off that to the main point of our little chat This week marks the 45th anniversary of the film Was there anything else you noticed about it in 2020 really don’t miss the things we take for granted in movies today I always forget how it’s pretty perfectly divided into two parts: the build-up where the main conflict is Brody trying to get the mayor to close the damn beaches; and then the part aboard the Orca survive the shark once it starts attacking them in earnest The way the movie keeps showing you the canisters Brody is going to shoot at the end to remind you they’re there The way the yellow barrels develop a personality of their own the way the chemistry between the three leads slowly builds across the movie Eddy: The scene below deck where they’re comparing their wounds and then Quint goes into “the speech”—still chilling every time Eddy: It’s pretty wild to think this was Spielberg’s second feature Lussier: And he wasn’t even 30 when he made it He knows it’s the wrong thing but he needs to get that economy going And then Chief Brody literally has the line “I can do anything is meant to be a joke but doesn’t feel like a joke today But it was just eye-opening to recontextualize this movie with a 2020 viewpoint It’s a movie that shows us just how far we’ve come It’s a testament to the film that you can still look at it almost half a century later and find things about it to discuss Or maybe it’s a testament to society that we’re still stuck in some of these same ruts https://gizmodo.com/the-5-best-worst-jaws-rip-offs-1836013736 Eddy: Hollywood has evolved in some ways since 1975 Eddy: Yes, definitely. The shark reputation will never recover from Jaws (and all the rip-off movies that came after it) Do you think people will still be talking about it in another 45 years even though Spielberg has directed a zillion other huge movies it’ll always be among his top accomplishments “Here’s to swimmin with bow-legged women!” Spielberg has only gotten better and better and his reputation along with about a million other notable things about it means people will be revisiting Jaws for as long as people are watching movies For more, make sure you’re following us on our Instagram @io9dotcom ' + scriptOptions._localizedStrings.webview_notification_text + ' " + scriptOptions._localizedStrings.redirect_overlay_title + " " + scriptOptions._localizedStrings.redirect_overlay_text + " Lloyd's List is part of Maritime Intelligence This site is operated by a business or businesses owned by Maritime Insights & Intelligence Limited registered in England and Wales with company number 13831625 and address c/o Hackwood Secretaries Limited Lloyd’s List Intelligence is a trading name of Maritime Insights & Intelligence Limited Lloyd’s is the registered trademark of the Society Incorporated by the Lloyd’s Act 1871 by the name of Lloyd’s For high-quality copies or electronic reprints for distribution to colleagues or customers please call UK support at +44 (0)20 3377 3996 / APAC support at +65 6508 2430 according to Lloyd’s List Intelligence A subscription is required to continue reading this content Your username does not meet the requirements Sorry - public email accounts are not allowed An account with that username already exists Unfortunately we've not been able to process your registration Your question has been successfully sent to the email address below and we will get back as soon as possible This article has been sent to my@email.address QuotesBrody: [1:21:27] You're gonna need a bigger boat. newborn great white shark filmed off the California coast near Santa Barbara A newborn great white shark may have been spotted in the wild for the first time Although great whites are found in seas and oceans around the world very little is known about where and how they give birth Read more Orcas sink another sailboat as a bewildering wave of attacks continues Wildlife film-maker Carlos Gauna and Phillip Sternes from the University of California, Riverside, were filming with a drone off Santa Barbara on California’s coast when they saw a 1.5-metre-long not just because it was much smaller than adult great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) that are up to three times longer but because these sharks are normally grey on top The pair had previously seen large, possibly pregnant great whites in the area sink into the depths for long periods, and they noticed that this young shark was shedding something from its skin as it swam They realised that it was probably a pup born nearby still shedding its embryonic layer – something has never been observed before Gauna hopes that the sighting will tell us more about the life cycle of the great white It is generally believed that they give birth in deeper water but this observation calls that into question “Because most of the scientific community believed filming a newborn so close to shore wasn’t likely “The piece of the puzzle this footage provides does have the potential to change the direction of where we should be looking.” “Capturing the actual birth is the holy grail of shark science What I filmed is simply a clue that gets us closer to it,” he says “Because of the limitations of filming underwater [and] the unpredictability of the event it’s a tall order to capture the actual birth.” Charles Underwood at Birkbeck says only three or four great white sharks under a year old have previously been found in the wild – they are few enough that researchers have nicknamed them all relative to our abilities to look through the sea.” Gauna and Sternes say one sighting isn’t enough to put an end to the mystery and more work needs to be done to determine if their sighting was typical But if we discover that coastal waters are important for the life cycle of great whites politicians should move to protect these areas to ensure the sharks’ safety Environmental Biology of Fishes DOI: 10.1007/s10641-024-01512-7 Jan readjustments of the jaws “It was like being bitten by a dog – it’s painful but it’s more this intense pressure and squeezing and crushing.” Rapley was about 10 metres away and saw Doyle thrown off and started paddling to her It’s a gut feeling,” he says of the moment when his partner Chantelle – who he calls “Chon” with a soft “sh” sound – was taken He was only a metre away when he glimpsed the shark He slipped off his board and on to Doyle’s back and gave the shark punches with his right fist Mark Rapley in a courtyard at John Hunter Hospital Photograph: Matthew Abbott“I was just flailing – Hail Mary punches – and I’m thinking ‘Just get the bloody hell off’ but after the first two it felt ineffectual.” The shark’s flesh was hard – like a professional boxing bag I expected from all those videos to see a teethy jawline – but I didn’t see that.” The shark’s head and eyes (which Rapley has seen in his thoughts repeatedly since) were above the water line He aimed his punches more towards the shark’s eye and kept swinging furiously “until I thought it would let go” His assault lasted maybe only 10 seconds or so but the pair have talked about those seconds since But after eight or 10 punches – Rapley is not quite sure – the shark opened its jaws and swam away Chantelle did not see the shark that bit her Chantelle Doyle at John Hunter Hospital Photograph: Matthew AbbottRapley got back into the water to get to his partner’s shoulder to talk to her She says there was little pain at this point – “I think it was adrenaline” – and it wasn’t until she thought she was semi-safe the pain began to rise But she could not feel anything below her right knee “It was like this heavy weight hanging off the back of my leg Doyle and Rapley repositioned themselves on their boards two other surfers had arrived to help and they all paddled their own boards ashore – two either side of Doyle with Rapley behind Doyle’s group caught a wave that surged them to the beach I slid off the side of the board into the shallow water and laid there wondering … ‘What do we do now?’” But Rapley had missed the wave and was left behind Mark Rapley takes his partner Photograph: Matthew AbbottThere was blood in the water but Rapley did not know how bad Doyle’s injuries were “I had this fear of arriving with half her calf missing or blood jumping out everywhere,” he says then the fear goes away a bit and you’re thinking about getting her to safety.” One of the surfers grabbed Doyle under the shoulders and pulled her on to the sand A nurse who was on the beach and had seen the drama unfold knelt down saw the wound and said: “You’re going to have to tourniquet that right now.” the leg rope from her surfboard was ripped off for a tourniquet “I knew my leg was there but I didn’t want to look at it after that I was very nauseous but was starting to be in a lot of pain.” but the car park was 700m away down the beach Rapley and four others took about 20 minutes to carry Doyle to meet the ambulance but she didn’t want to make her saviours feel guilty The ambulance gets ready to take Chantelle Doyle to the hospital Photograph: Port Macquarie ALS Lifeguards“I just remember thinking that I had to be nice,” she says She was taken to a local hospital and then – seeing the amount of micro-surgery that was needed – she was flown by helicopter to the bigger city of Newcastle and John Hunter Hospital she was moved again to a hospital closer to Sydney “I have said to Mark that I had a feeling I was going to be bitten one day,” she says “Our attitude is that life throws you big challenges here’s that big challenge we were waiting for.’” she has had an allergic reaction and is “lying here with chamomile lotion over three-quarters of my body” to ease the itching Chantelle Doyle gets some sun in the patient garden at John Hunter Hospital nurses and skin specialists are coming and going but she feels the need to apologise for the interruptions There are flowers everywhere – “it smells like a florists” – but the slowly deflating balloons match her mood from earlier today The shark severed the nerve in her leg below the knee She has only limited feeling and there is no movement yet There will be challenges thrown up constantly over the coming months and years One for seven hours to repair damage to muscles bone and nerves and fix up the gashes and another for four hours to do a skin graft over an orange-sized hole in her calf John Hunter Hospital where Chantelle Doyle is recovering from a shark attack doctors are unsure about how well the leg and nerves will heal Predicting how nerves respond is difficult and it could be months or longer before she knows if she can keep her leg live at Cromer in northern Sydney and have been together nine years Rapley has been the media face so far as the hero who punched a shark to save the girl But now the pair are compelled to talk about something else before the media moves on Already, they have started a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for the Australian Marine Conservation Society with a catchy hashtag – #punchingforhealthyoceans Chantelle Doyle photographed at Dee Why beach in 2019 Photograph: Surf Photos of You“We’re not suddenly shark evangelists,” Doyle says “But they are a keystone species and we want our kids to have a nicer environment I’ve seen the Great Barrier Reef collapsing “I think I’m more interested in sharks now I’m a scientist but I work on terrestrial areas and hadn’t done much marine work “I’m actually proud that Australia has marine systems that are healthy and sharks are an integral part of that Having sharks means you have higher densities of fish The two have thought carefully about how they interpret what happened and also how their reaction to it should not exclude others from having entirely different responses But they have settled on how they are going to refer to it “We are calling it the encounter,” Doyle says They have been talking with experts on sharks and speaking to the state’s Department of Primary Industries about its SharkSmart program A Bite Club key ring Photograph: Mark RapleyDoyle was curious if the shark had mistaken her for something else – maybe a seal “But they said maybe it did just want to eat me.” Juvenile sharks seem to be more troublesome than others While unprovoked shark bites are extremely rare, Australia’s love for ocean recreation means they get more than other countries. There have been six deaths from sharks this year For years the approach has been nets on beaches and state-managed hooks in the water to catch large sharks But those hooks kill sharks and also kill other marine animals Some studies have suggested the numbers of large sharks in Australia is dropping. Globally, research suggests reef sharks are in a precipitous decline in many places Doyle is encouraged there is a move towards less invasive smarter technologies; hooks with sensors so fisheries staff can catch and release; drones in the air to warn bathers; real-time phone app updates on locations of tagged sharks; and research into personal shark deterrents The pair want to see measures around the world that keep both bathers and sharks safe Chantelle Doyle and Mark Rapley in the patient garden at John Hunter Hospital Photograph: Matthew AbbottDoyle says: “A way to get positives is to learn more about sharks and to start this fundraising That’s to make the most of this event – this encounter if you have this niggle of guilt that you should be doing something better Whether it’s picking up rubbish or putting those solar panels up “We want this to encourage everyone to just be the best version of themselves We all know when we’re taking the easy option.” Rapley says: “We are openly taking this opportunity to turn the attention away from us Chantelle would hate the attention on her – she’s trying to divert attention.” They have been in touch with a charity group known as the Bite Club that supports people who have been bitten by sharks or families who have lost loved ones from encounters Doyle says: “I do know that some families have taken some comfort from shark bite survivors when you say that the answer is complicated and he is still working it through He is not scared but he is now thinking if it would be selfish “if something happened and I left them” Mark Rapley photographed at Dee Why in 2019 Photograph: Surf Photos of You“Even if Chon ends up with a prosthesis we’ve still got each other and we can be parents to our son That’s a story that’s not that scary with hindsight.” and she says under the waves “was always my safest of places and it will be again.” “It just might take a few years of rehabilitation before I can surf again.” To support their nasus) is distributed throughout the temperate north Atlantic and southern hemisphere Populations of the porbeagle have been severely depleted around the globe The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species assessed the porbeagle as Vulnerable globally Endangered in the northwest Atlantic and Critically Endangered in the Mediterranean and northeast Atlantic The porbeagle falls into the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) lowest productivity category meaning it has an extremely low reproductive capacity and thus is particularly vulnerable to overexploitation It is also one of the ocean's most vulnerable species This species yields significant commercial value for both its large fins and its meat and is taken in both targeted and bycatch fisheries The international demand for porbeagle meat and fi ns has driven populations to very low levels across its range Recent assessments show that because porbeagle populations have been severely depleted it is unable to fulfill its key role in the marine ecosystem Porbeagle populations are reduced by about 70 percent of their historical levels wherever they are found and in some places declines are even steeper porbeagles have virtually disappeared in the Mediterranean Sea Although management has improved within some of the porbeagle's range because of domestic fi sheries measures such as a management plan in Canadian waters and a retention prohibition in the European Union almost no international conservation or management measures for the species are in place on the high seas (areas beyond national jurisdiction) The North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) has prohibited the targeting and retention of porbeagle sharks but the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) has still failed to act; within the porbeagle's southern range there are no conservation or management measures on the high seas whatsoever This adds up to huge areas where the porbeagle has no protection Because the species is extremely vulnerable to both targeted shark longline fisheries and bycatch throughout its range further depletion is likely to render this species at risk of extinction enforcement and compliance are often weak and significant levels of mortality remain the porbeagle was included in CITES Appendix III The listing requires that an export permit be issued for wildlife products exported from the country that included the species in Appendix III 20 of the 27 EU Member States and Australia that included the species in Appendix III need to issue export permits All other CITES Parties are required to issue a certificate of origin confirming that the specimen is not from the country that included the species in Appendix III but other scientifi c fi ndings are not required A proposal to include the porbeagle in CITES Appendix II was proposed at the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP15) and was endorsed by the FAO the proposal very narrowly missed being adopted A new Appendix II proposal has been submitted by the EU Member States and Egypt for consideration by the Parties at CoP16 It is clear from continued assessments that the population has not recovered and further analysis shows it is in a worse state globally than in 2010 while international trade is still significant Although the recent inclusion of porbeagle sharks on CITES Appendix III is a positive step an Appendix II listing is vital to ensuring that they are managed throughout their range to prevent overexploitation due to international trade A CITES Appendix II listing of the porbeagle is scientifically justified and essential to ensuring that international trade occurs only from fisheries that are legal and sustainable and that trade data are recorded The Pew Charitable Trusts uses data to make a difference Pew addresses the challenges of a changing world by illuminating issues and advancing ambitious projects that lead to tangible progress The smooth hammerhead shark (Sphyrna zygaena) and great hammerhead shark (Sphyrna mokarran) are listed as look-alike species in the scalloped hammerhead proposal The scalloped hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini) one of the most recognizable shark species with its hammer-shaped head The scalloped hammerhead is subject to targeted fisheries It is exploited primarily to satisfy a growing global demand for its fi ns which are some of the most valuable in the fin trade Hammerheads frequently aggregate in large numbers which makes them even more vulnerable to fishing efforts they are assessed on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species as Endangered globally and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) assigns them to the lowest-productivity category meaning that they have an extremely low reproductive capacity and are one of the ocean's most vulnerable species Fisheries surveys in the northwest Atlantic have documented hammerhead loss of up to 98 percent landings in the southwest Atlantic have declined by up to 90 percent and declines of more than 99 percent have occurred in some parts of the Mediterranean Sea Although their distinctive body shape makes hammerheads easy to identify as a genus it can be diffi cult to distinguish scalloped hammerheads from the similar-looking smooth (S but market-based scientific inquiries have yielded important trade information Dealers have stated that hammerhead fins are some of the most valuable The three hammerhead species combined make up approximately six percent of the identified fins entering the Hong Kong market scientists have estimated that 1.3 million to 2.7 million scalloped and smooth hammerheads are exploited for the fin trade every year A few countries and only one regional fisheries management organization (RFMO) have conservation or management measures for hammerheads but RFMOs do not regulate international trade hammerheads are among the shark species that are most often fished illegally the scalloped hammerhead was included in CITES Appendix III Appendix III requires that an export permit be issued for parts and products exported from the country that included the species in Appendix III (Costa Rica and Australia in this case) All other countries must issue a certificate of origin showing that it is not from the country that listed the species; but other scientific findings are not required A proposal to include scalloped hammerheads in Appendix II was submitted at CoP15 and was endorsed by the FAO the proposal narrowly missed being adopted Although the recent inclusion of scalloped hammerhead sharks on CITES Appendix III is a positive step an Appendix II listing is vital to ensuring that hammerhead sharks are protected throughout their range from overexploitation due to international trade A CITES Appendix II listing for scalloped hammerheads would greatly improve the future health of populations by regulating international commerce in their products ensuring trade occurs only from sustainable and legal fi sheries and enhancing data-reporting and enforcement efforts Posted in: Games, Rainbow Six Siege, Ubisoft, Video Games | Tagged: Ubisoft revealed the latest plans for Rainbow Six Siege's next content update as His elementary school drama teacher, the late Lee Fierro (who played Mrs convinced Bigelow and other classmates to come film a scene Bigelow is one of the kids throwing a football in the water when Alex Kintner is killed by the titular shark Bigelow said that while he and other kids appeared scared on screen “I did that for six hours that day,” Bigelow said “They had wool blankets and hot chocolate for us between takes We had to wait for the fake blood to dissipate every time they staged a new shot which took 45 minutes to an hour every time.” Bigelow originally purchased the Lydia for use in “Making the Monster,” a six-part docudrama he hopes to make about the making of “Jaws” on Martha’s Vineyard. But with the continued proliferation of sharks in local waters Bigelow decided the boat would be better suited for conservation Bigelow said he has spoken to shark researcher Greg Skomal — who Bigelow called a modern- day Matt Hooper played by Richard Dreyfuss in “Jaws” — about the boat being used to tag great whites “Greg said the most important part for tagging great whites is having a pulpit that extends off the bow of the boat so that you can tag them easily from just overhead,” Bigelow said Skomal said that it was somewhat surprising given that “Jaws” is synonymous with Martha’s Vineyard that the island has been the subject of relatively little shark research compared to Cape Cod “I want to get to know what’s happening around Martha’s Vineyard,” Skomal said in a video promoting the project That’s an area that’s really been devoid of research and that’s where we want to begin to focus our attention.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wBzBvVJDTk&feature=emb_title Bigelow also sees the Orca III being used for tours which will allow “Jaws” fans from around the world to learn more about the film and about sharks He estimates the Orca III could be used for tours about 80 percent of the time with free tours being offered to local school groups and charities “The need for education around sharks is really strong,” Bigelow said “To avoid any further problems or fatalities with sharks I think the boat could be a great focal point of interest.” Bigelow will have two experts at the ready to help make the Orca III a reality: Joe Alves the production designer for “Jaws,” and Chris Crawford who transformed a boat called the Warlock into the original Orca back in 1974 During any scene in “Jaws” where the Orca was out at sea the Lydia is sitting in Crawford’s backyard while Alves will provide design expertise from California Bigelow and Co. are hoping to raise at least $150,000 through their crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo dubbed “Return of the Orca.” The funds would go toward labor costs for rebuilding the boat ‘A boat is a hole in the water you throw money into,’” Bigelow said A mock-up of what Bigelow hopes the Orca III will look like Bigelow believes strongly in the potential benefits of the project in terms of research and education Bigelow cited the work of late “Jaws” author Peter Benchley and his wife Wendy as an inspiration for the Orca III’s planned mission. For years, the late author was troubled by his book’s contribution to America’s fear of sharks and he and Wendy dedicated their lives to shark conservation but people became very fearful of sharks,” Bigelow said “Wendy has made it her mission for years to demystify sharks and turn back the clock on their demonization.” In a statement posted to Return of the Orca’s website “The return of the Orca is a celebration for the fans of Jaws as well as an exciting new resource in the pursuit of a greater understanding about our oceans and the life teeming in it,” Benchley said “We are so happy that we can be a part of this exciting project.” Kevin Slane is a staff writer for Boston.com covering entertainment and culture.
