Maltese Bishop Monsignor Walter Michael Ebejer has died in Brazil where he had been a missionary for 64 years. Born in Dingli, he was 91 years old and was the brother of the writer Francis Ebejer. He was ordained a priest in 1954 and is a member of the Order of Preachers. Three years later he began missionary work in Brazil where he has been a Bishop for 44 years. When he retired from running the diocese of Uniao da Vitoria, of which he was the first Bishop, he continued to live there as Bishop Emeritus. over long distances  “You get lost and you have to ask someone for directions Sometimes I would spend hours in the forest without meeting a soul he was sent to the southern part of Brazil where there were lots of foreigners such as Germans It is enough to mention that in one year I baptised 1,200 babies in one parish alone One parish was three time the size of Malta,” Mons Ebejer explained In 1977 he was consecrated Bishop and was given a new diocese: Uniao da Vitoria The diocese was 26 times the size of Malta with many churches while the Bishop himself  used to carry out the work of the parish priest  “I could not leave all those people without any pastoral services I was already ordaining the first brothers The most wonderful moment for me was when I managed to get a major Seminary functioning where young people could start to prepare themselves for the priesthood It was of great satisfaction for me that when I left that diocese it had become financially viable,” the Mons continued we asked him if he ever feels the need to come back to his native land: “I do not even dream of retiring in Malta In the 60 years of living in Brazil not a day passed when I did not pray for Malta Now I need to look at the country which has become my second home.” He added that he hopes that Malta will continue to cherish its faith and values so that the Maltese will not be sorry when it
