From the pioneering bossa nova of Edu Lobo to the continued genius of Seu Jorge
the South American nation has always fostered a vibrant and inventive music scene which had captured the imaginations of countless budding musicians
some of Brazil’s greatest exports were never afforded the praise they so richly deserved
as in the case of guitarist and bossa nova devotee Rosinha de Valença
the Brazilian became entranced by the music around her during childhood
hearing all the latest music to emerge from Rio de Janeiro
she had a natural affinity with the sounds of acoustic guitar
After seeing her brother play the instrument
would devote herself to mastering the six-string
she began to play along to the songs she heard on the radio
a young Canelas was performing in bars and restaurants across her hometown of Valença
Despite her clear devotion to music and the passion she played
Canelas’ parents did not support her artistic ambitions
meaning she garnered very little mainstream attention
with sexism and gender roles prevalent in virtually all aspects of society
and there was no place for a young woman like Canelas
Relocating to the heart of Rio de Janeiro in 1963
Canelas abandoned studying in order to pursue music full-time
It was during this period that she was given the stage name Rosinha de Valença by a local journalist
not just for herself but for all of her hometown
For the uninitiated, Rio during the early 1960s was an incredibly creative place to be. In contrast to the increased political turmoil in Brazil’s government
musicians and artists across the city began to explore new avenues of expression
paid homage to the musical traditions of the country
while modernising its sound for an entirely new generation
Although Canelas’ music fit right in with the sounds and conventions of the bossa nova age
she was roundly ignored by mainstream audiences in Brazil
so this opportunity gave Canelas an incredible opportunity to share her work with the world
The next few decades would see Rosinha de Valença perform all around the world
both in a solo capacity and collaborating with figures like Sarah Vaughan and even the composer Henry Mancini
her incredible bossa nova guitar compositions were never held in the same light as other pioneers of the genre
she has been repeatedly overlooked in the history of bossa nova and Brazilian music as a whole
Maria Rosa Canelas retired from music during the 1990s following a heart attack
She eventually passed away in 2004 after over a decade in a vegetative state
much of her material has been reappraised and rightly hailed for its innovative
groundbreaking quality within the lineage of bossa nova and MPB music
but Rosinha de Valença still goes down in history as one of the most skilled and important guitarists to ever grace the airwaves of Brazil

Biya said her mother and brother have both urged her to delete the recent Instagram post revealing her relationship with a Brazilian model
Even the daughter of Cameroon's president may not be shielded from the nation's harsh anti-LGBTQ+ laws
Brenda Biya, whose father is Paul Biya, came out last week in an Instagram post that revealed her relationship with Brazilian model Layyons Valença
writing in the caption: “PS: I’m crazy about you & I want the world to know.”
Cameroon prohibits consensual same-sex relationships
carrying a sentence of up to five years in prison and a fine
Biya has since revealed the extent of the backlash she received for her post
Biya told France's Le Parisien that her brother was the first to contact her after she posted the photo
angry at her for publishing it without warning the family
Biya also said that her family was not aware she had been in a relationship with Valença for eight months
despite bringing her to the country to visit three times
HRW also noted a spike in anti-LGBTQ+ hate crimes in recent years due to the political landscape
Law enforcement often fails to investigate or prosecute such crimes
and instead "arrest and detain those who report [them]," HRW said
Biya added that she "can lose a lot" by coming out due to the country's law
"I hope that my story will change it," she continued
“Coming out is an opportunity to send a strong message
There are plenty of people in the same situation as me who suffer because of who they are

Brenda Biya officially came out as LGBTQ+ on her Instagram account @KingNastyy on 30 June
sharing a picture of her kissing her girlfriend
Cameroon criminalises LGBTQ+ activity; a crime punishable with up to five years in prison and a fine
LGBTQ+ people in the country are frequently subjected to discrimination
In 2022, a civil society group tracked a rise in violence and abuse against LGBTQ+ people in Cameroon.
Brenda captioned the photo of her and Layyons: “PS: I’m crazy about you & I want the world to know.”
One commenter reminded her that her father is Paul Biya
In response, she wrote, as reported by Cameroon News Agency: “Nobody will have anything to say because only love shall win.
but it will change once the people are ready.”
The comments on the Instagram post now appear to have been turned off
The 26-year-old Cameroonian first daughter is also featured in Valença’s TikTok videos
People have questioned if Brenda Biya will be prosecuted under Cameroon‘s anti-LGBTQ+ law
with one person writing on X/Twitter that the law is only “for the poor”
Anti-gay laws in Africa are not for rich people
Others have praised her bravery in coming out and standing with the marginalised LGBTQ+ community.
Another supporter said they were “proud of her” for going public with her relationship

Brazilian guitarist Rosinha de Valença had her heyday in the 1960s
and was eventually known as one her country’s best guitarists
and has the very apt title A Guitar in the Foreground
Her acoustic guitar is pushed to the front of the mix
and she rips through a multitude of performance styles as she goes
You can hear the passion in the slap of her fingers on the strings and fretboard
The song is pretty clearly a product of the late sixties
but over the course of the album I was impressed by its variety
On ‘Zanzibar’ you can hear her biding her time before interjecting stabs and slides
He described her as playing for her whole city - her birthplace of Valença - and so she took it as her stage name
Bossa nova had originated out of Rio in the late fifties
meaning Valença could travel to America to perform with Sergio Mendes
and American musicians like Stan Getz and Henry Mancini
Occasionally she adds her voice to proceedings
it’s as restrained as her playing is fiery
‘Marinheiro So’ gets the record’s one vocal guest spot from Martinho da Vila
adding gusto to his exchanges with Valença’s conversational guitar licks
Rosinha de Valença released seven albums between 1964 and 1990
The consensus among music writers seems to be that she was underappreciated in her time
which is familiar when reading up on this type of musical figure
Her story has a sad ending: she fell into a coma in 1992
and remained there for twelve years before dying
She was honoured in Brazil with a tribute concert
and an album of new versions of songs she’d composed
The tracks on A Guitar in the Foreground are mostly covers
but as a snapshot of her incredible technique

“He never gave up his identity throughout his career”
author of the 562-page book “Pelas Ruas Que Andei” (Through the streets I walked) – A biography of Alceu Valença
The work on the multiple-influenced artist was launched in June
has a career marked by resistance and maintenance of his northeastern roots
He is the creator of a distinctive musical style that mixes his northeastern roots and contemporary MPB grooves
His songs have been recorded by several major artists
including Luiz Gonzaga (with whom he wrote “Plano Piloto”)
Valença always worried his father with his rebellious character
At five he participated in a music contest
his mother took ill and his family moved to Recife
Valença became interested in the acoustic guitar and viola
he didn’t get one for a few years — he won an instrument during a song competition when he was 15
In 1965 he began a long period of attending law school in Recife with several interruptions
Three years later he began his musical career with the group Tamarineira Village
He also played with Zé Ramalho and Elba Ramalho during this period
he took part in an essay competition that offered a three-month course at Harvard University as its first prize
he drafted an essay comparing Marxism to the Catholic Church and pointed poetically at the contradictions of political ideologies in vogue
he played his political songs in coffee houses when not studying
which referred to him as the “Brazilian Bob Dylan.” After returning to Brazil
they participated in many song festival competitions and recorded their first album
produced by none other than Rogerio Duprat
He recruited musicians who were already established
Valença placed numerous songs in festival competitions
but due to controversial lyric matter he was often disqualified — though these banned tunes won him a following among likeminded young people
he returned to Recife with the conviction of abandoning music
he released the Eustaquio Sena-produced album Molhado De Suor
it also featured the talents of Azevedo and Lula Cortes
he scored a big hit with “Vou Danado pra Catende,” at a festival; inspired by modernist Pernambucan poet Ascenso Ferreira
crowd support led the competition’s jury to create a special “Research” prize
he recorded the now-classic rock album Vivo
a rock album recorded at the Teresa Raquel Theater in Rio de Janeiro
While touring and entering song competitions constantly
he didn’t record again for two years; the studio effort Espelho Cristalino was issued in 1977 and charted
These two recordings put him over the top as a unique stylist and songwriter in the MPB tradition
but he was also embraced by an entire generation of rockers
Valença was successful beyond anybody’s dreams but his own
Several of his songs became soap opera themes (the fastest way to reach a mass audience in Brazil) and grew his already large following
He earned a position as one of the most respected singers and songwriters in Brazilian popular music
and his albums and singles continued to chart
Valença recorded more than 20 albums and travelled around many countries
he is considered one of the greatest exponents of the music of Pernambuco
with the 2013 release of Três Tons de Alceu Valença
a box with the oldies Cinco Sentidos (1981)
Anjo Avesso (1983) and Mágico (1984) all of Alceu Valença’s solo work is available on CD
his album Amigo da Arte was nominated for the Latin Grammy Award for Best Brazilian Roots Album

LGBTQ+ relationships are criminalized in Cameroon
carrying a sentence of up to five years in prison
In the face of Cameroon's criminalization of LGBTQ+ relationships
the daughter of the nation's president has come out
Brenda Biya, daughter of President Paul Biya, revealed in a recent post to her Instagram that she is in a relationship with Brazilian model Layyons Valença
This has not stopped law enforcement from targeting and arresting members of the LGBTQ+ community, as there are several reports of mass arrests, arbitrary detention, and torture and violence being used against queer people while in custody
HRW also noted a spike in anti-LGBTQ+ hate crimes in recent years due to the political landscape
Cameroon's National Communication Council acted in 2023 to prohibit the broadcasting of scenes containing homosexuality
It shortly after suspended the channel Canal+ Elles for two weeks for violating the policy
Biya's coming out has LGBTQ+ Africans and activists wondering if she will be subject to the same punishments as those who do not share her resources or status
or if her being the daughter of the president will instead shield her
Biya herself isn't worried — when one commenter pointed out who her father is and what the law says

For at least three days in June 2019 gangs of drunken English soccer ‘fans’ laid siege to the beautiful Portuguese city of Porto
they were there for the Europa Cup but sport had nothing to do with their behaviour
All night they roamed the streets singing and chanting inane songs punctuated with God Save the Queen and Rule Britannia
short back and sides and loafers were their uniform
Their days were spent drinking and littering the streets
The amount of rubbish they left behind was astounding; much of it plastic beer cups strewn everywhere and no doubt
Their disrespect for local people and culture cannot be measured
Guide signs to historic and religious monuments were defaced with soccer stickers
Fights were common and the local police were on constant alert
A kind of medieval battle took place between the fans and the police in the city centre where large TV screens had been set up
I couldn’t leave them behind quickly enough
A local policeman told me that Portugal looked forward to changes in immigration laws when Britain left the European Union
During this time it was also reported in the world media that four men had bashed two young gay women on a bus in London for refusing to kiss each other in response to their demands
The English soccer fans made for a dark beginning for me to the Camino Portuguese from Porto to Santiago de Compostela in June 2019
A close friend said the world had gone mad and she was right
A few weeks later Vladimir Putin announced to the world in an interview with The Financial Times before the G20 in Japan
that liberal democracy is dead and the attempted murder of two Russians in Salisbury didn’t amount to five kopecks
Shortly before my annual pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain I sat in the County Court for a month in a regional city in Victoria
The district was bathed in constant late autumn sun
Occasionally it rained but the climate didn’t seem right for Victoria at that time of the year
Large mobs of Eastern grey roos congregated by a lake
They looked intently at me as I trained for the next Camino
The Camino Portuguese may be walked from Lisbon or Porto and either inland or along the Atlantic coast
I chose to take the inland route from Porto
As with previous walks I was interested in the visual arts of the place and the time
I went to the Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis to see Aurelia de Sousa’s celebrated self portrait painted in Porto in 1900 (above)
A still and serious picture she has a look of our time
Her other work generally concerns the day to day business of life; food
I arrived at the museum on a wet morning and made my way to the gallery where the self portrait hangs
What really took me to that room that day will remain a mystery
I was interested in the painting but sensed there was more to the story
And so it was; on the adjacent wall to the painting hangs a portrait of an ‘Aboriginal King’ (below) also painted in 1900 by Artur Loureiro
probably in the Heidelberg area of Melbourne
Loureiro had moved to Australia in 1884 and painted with the Heidelberg School artists
He was on the Board of the National Gallery of Victoria and taught art at the Presbyterian Ladies College then located in East Melbourne
It is a painting not driven by the patronising racism of the time
The King is depicted with dignity and respect
sitting in calm pose in the gently-lit landscape
Loureiro returned to Porto in 1901 and no doubt he and Aurelia were colleagues
I stood alone in the gallery gazing at the paintings completed at the time of Australian Federation; an assured calm woman and man in that time and that place
The following morning I took the metro to Matosinhos and to the bridge over the Douro River to begin this Camino
The first day would be along the Atlantic before the central route
I walked along the Atlantic coast through the fishing villages
along the boardwalks and over the sand dunes
The first day of a Camino is a mixture of joy and hesitation
I’ve seen many first-day injuries and took my time
The fishing villages are a colourful disorganised product of the sea they face
The Atlantic receded as I arrived in Vila da Conde
As the clearing wind and space of the ocean left me to the west and I entered the Minho valley
the reality of subsistence living was revealed
With a complex history of Roman occupation followed by its own history of the occupation of Africa
Portugal today is one of the poorest developed nations in the world
Subsistence was the story of those days on the Camino; small family food plots
Much of the way is on granite cobble stone paths and back country roads
There is little of the Romanesque architecture one encounters in Spain
this journey became one of time and distance
But at its heart lay a mystery that I could not define
the King sitting in the grass in Melbourne
An aching uncertainty coloured the landscape and the towns
exhausted and with the smell of the albergue for company
I understood that this was a choice that I had made
In previous years I was guided by the beauty and deep spiritual energy of the Spanish caminos I completed
I became unsettled and concerned for my safety walking along the roads as vehicles sped past
the sublime Vinho Verde of the region made for relaxing evenings
From time to time I watched the world news
Portugal and Spain in this location are separated by the River Minho
On either side are two medieval towns; Valenca in Portugal and Tui in Spain
A late 19th Century steel bridge crosses the river
In the early morning I rose and walked through the empty ancient town of Valenca
Walking along a smooth flagstone path I came to a wooden gate built many centuries ago
The soft light fell on the stones and revealed in the distance the mountains of Galicia
I do not pretend for a moment that some transfiguration took place that morning
The profound beauty and immense history of that gate lifted my spirits
I thought of the dignity of the King and my desire for justice
Prior to taking the train to Porto to start the Camino
One night I visited a student Fado bar in the Alfama district
At first the bar was quiet before a young man began to play the violin
Two men arrived with a guitar and a guitarra
A young woman began to sing Fado and another joined her in the chorus
Others joined in until finally a truly great Fado singer sang alone accompanied by the guitarists
Fado is the music born in the Alfama from struggle and hope
a Portuguese word impossible to truly translate into English but akin to longing and perhaps
Looking back and writing this today I understand that night in Lisbon was when this story began
It has been reported that Keith Haring once asked of the contemporary American artist George Condo ‘What is more important
life or art ?’ I was struck by the irrelevance of that choice
For me the question is ‘What is life without art?’ But for the music
my visit to the gallery in Porto and the two works I have written about
I fear this Camino and the setting in which took place may have led me to a more lasting state of despair
The grim dark journey etching itself into my outlook
And I fear that life as a judge can do that too
Grim dark tales unfolding again and again in court
I know the work has taken that toll on me and on others
Recent research has revealed that to the community
who now judge judges more and more assertively
I walked on through the Spanish countryside arriving in Santiago two weeks after departing Porto
The square in front of the cathedral was crowded with pilgrims all of whom had undertaken a journey along the paths traversed for centuries by others
Shortly before Santiago I arrived at the satellite town of Milladoiro
It takes its name from the Spanish word humilladoiro the place where pilgrims would lay on the ground in an act of humility as the towers of the cathedral were first revealed over the trees
Before them lay the hope and protection of their belief
I stopped for lunch in Milladoiro in a restaurant below an apartment complex
lifted the veil cast over the effects of my work on me
looked after Sam outside the supermarket more
but I hadn’t been to the dark place walking alone along a four kilometre stretch of road in oppressive heat through a disintegrating Portuguese industrial estate
but that road took me to the gate at Valenca and the beautiful mountains beyond
And I knew when I crossed the bridge over the Minho river that there is no life without art and if I remembered the moments in the Alfama

That’s how I’d describe Valenca’s richly wood-paneled interior and coffered ceiling
The restaurant is named for the town in Portugal where owner George Meireles lived until he was 4
General Manager Janell Williams describes the “old-school Portuguese” restaurant’s menu as “rustic Mediterranean.” The portions are big; the entrees are hearty meat-and-potato dishes; and meals are served in a family-style presentation
Williams says Portuguese dishes are influenced by North African
(a hearty meat stew) and many seafood dishes
First-time customers will notice that Portuguese sausage
garlic and codfish play prominently in many of Valenca’s dishes
Meireles made a splash on the Easton restaurant scene when he helped to open River Grille and Ocean in 2003 and 2006
He is no longer involved in those restaurants
Meireles opened Valenca in 2008 and brought Sangria to Allentown’s Hamilton Street corridor earlier this year
"but it wouldn't surprise me if we saw more out of him in the next few years."
you’re going to have to officially make Tuesday your date night
The deal generally runs Tuesdays through the winter
but call before you go to confirm the dates of the promotion
The restaurant also offers special menus on State Theatre show nights
Enjoy a Small Bites menu during happy hour (4 to 6 p.m
Valenca caters to wine lovers with more than 100 varieties available

If you still have room when the plates are cleared
try the homemade rice pudding or chocolate mousse
seasonal fruit cobblers and Purple Cow Creamery ice cream
diners flock to the outdoor patio area with accommodations for 60
portable heaters make the space a cozy retreat
Indoor diners can choose from a spot at the bar
Private parties and special occasions demand one of Valenca’s private rooms in their wine cellar

The project represents phase two of the modernisation of the 92 km section of Portugal’s single-track Minho railway between Nine and Valença
The works will bring the infrastructure into line with EU technical specifications for interoperability
the project includes electrification of the line
construction of a traction substation at Vila Fria
and installation of five autotransformers between Viana do Castelo and Valença
The railway will be lowered in two sections to allow for electrification
earthworks carried out and drainage systems and supporting structures built or upgraded
Tunnels at Seixas and Gondarém will be modernised and waterproofed
Waterproofing will also be carried out on tunnels at São Miguel da Carreira
Carreço and Carvalha to allow goods trains of up to 750 m in length to cross
Darque and Viana do Castelo stations will be adapted to accommodate longer trains
Platforms at other stations will be raised and lengthened by around 80 m to ensure compatibility with electric rolling stock
public information and electronic signalling systems will be set up
and European Train Control System and GSM-R telecommunications infrastructure will be fitted on the line
A local command and control centre will be established at Viana do Castelo and connected to a centralised unit at Porto
Further work includes elimination or automation of level and pedestrian crossings
installation of a protective earthing system and additional reinforcement of the Eiffel bridge at Viana do Castello to enable it to cope with trains braking
the first phase of the project included rehabilitation of 21 km of track between Seixas and Valença
modernisation of the São Miguel da Carreira
Santa Lucrécia and Caminha tunnels and reinforcement of the Eiffel and Valença international bridges
Sixteen level crossings were eliminated and 11 underpasses and two pedestrian underpasses were built
Part of the comprehensive Trans-European Transport Network
the Nine-Valença section has nine stations and 18 stops
do not meet safety and accessibility standards
the stations can only handle freight trains of 300-400 m in length
rails with elastic clips and standard ballast
a telephonic block safety system and mechanical and electromagnetic signalling
automatic speed control and ground-to-train radio communications
Electric locomotives from Porto thus cannot go beyond Nine
making modernisation vital for seamless operations
The main aim of the project is to bolster the competitiveness of the railways by enhancing their attractiveness for passenger and freight transport
It is aimed at strengthening national and international connectivity through the elimination of the bottleneck caused by the lack of electrification
the work will support development of intermodal transport by linking important nodes such as the Port of Leixões
Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport and logistics hubs
Total investment for the project “Modernisation of Minho Line – Section Nine-Valença (Border) (2nd Phase)” is EUR 105 971 811
with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 67 858 668 through the “Competitiveness and Internationalisation” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period
The investment falls under the priority “Transport and energy networks”

The project also includes “all necessary changes/rectifications to the Braga branch [RB] and/or the Minho Line (LM)
to allow the integration of the RB into the High-Speed Link”
the environmental impact study must consider several hypotheses
is the “connection to RB near Tadim Station
in order to make Braga AV Station viable in the location foreseen in the Previous Studies developed by RAVE [Rede Ferroviária de Alta Velocidade
It should also address the “connection to RB as close as possible to Braga
in order to enable an underground Braga AV station
Another hypothesis is the “connection to RB in order to enable an underground Braga AV station at the intersection of LAV and RB”
several alternatives are planned to be studied

A BRAZILIAN model has surgically changed the colour of her eyes after struggling to "identify" with her real shade
Layyons Valença, 24, spent £7,000 to get her brown eyes changed to blue in a procedure done in Lausanne, Switzerland
The model said she opted for the surgery because she never liked the original colour of her eyes
so much so that she could not even look in the mirror
She even wore contact lenses to hide her natural brown eyes
After getting severe infections from using lenses all the time
Layyons decided to go for the rare transition
She said to Fantástico: "With my brown eyes
I couldn't look at myself in the mirror
"I got infections from wearing lenses. That's when I decided I needed to change the colour of my eyes."
Layyons explained she had to put intense efforts into taking care of her eye after the surgery.
"During the first three months, you are very sensitive to light. It goes away eventually.
The model's eye transformation - called Keratopigmentation - was carried out at an ophthalmology clinic in a small town near Geneva
who performed the surgery on the Brazilian model
said the procedure involves creating a tunnel in the eye with a microneedle and injecting pigments to change the colour
He said to the media house: "We create a kind of tunnel in the cornea
"We then inject the pigment to change the colour of the eyes with Keratopigmentation
These pigments are derived from natural metals and minerals."
The doctor also highlighted there could often be risks involved during the surgical procedure
While Layyons says her "self-esteem increased a lot" after the risky procedure
fans of the Brazilian model think the surgery left her looking even more ugly - with some even claiming she now has "fake" eyes
I tell them they are my eyes and I bought them
In Brazil
Only patients with medical conditions such as extensive opacity of the cornea are allowed to go through the procedure
the Brazilian Society of Ophthalmology reports
