Though it has been years since a new Harry Potter movie or book has been released
the fervor of the mega-blockbuster's fan base is one of the strongest in the world
From page to screen to now stages both on Broadway and in the West End
In recent months, Rowling has received backlash in response to comments the author made on social media in regards to the Trans community. The comments led many of the series' stars, including Daniel Radcliffe
to speak out in support of the LGBTQIA community and reminded readers that their relationship with the book is "sacred." Some fans have decided to distance themselves from the franchise whereas others have chosen to focus on the world Rowling created — rather than Rowling herself
fans of the franchise have taken their love of Potter to the field and created their own muggle-adjusted version of Quidditch — a game played by the young wizards of Hogwarts
this version which is sometimes even played as an intramural sport on college campuses does not require a flying broomstick
But this new invention out of Brazil could take Quidditch to the next level
The idea was sparked earlier this year by Alessandro Russo
created the first functional prototype for a motorized broomstick
The company is called Nuvem Vassouras and so far their Instagram page has amassed just over 3,000 fans waiting for the broom's official release which will cost about $250 USD apiece
Nuvem in Portuguese means cloud and vassouras translates to brooms
There are four different versions of the broomstick
"We believe that each wizard will connect with a different version of the broom
just as we on the team have different personalities and each has their favorite," Cecília Bohrer
the director of marketing at Nuvem Vassouras tells Newsweek
So how exactly do these magical broomsticks work
The brooms come mounted on a device that can be placed on a motorized wheel — or unicycle
though the company has just closed a deal with a Brazilian unicycle distributor where buyers can buy the products together if they choose
Though not the zippiest form of transportation, only hitting about 37mph, Russo says he jumps on his broomstick and takes it to the bakery, as he tells Reuters
"We will start selling our brooms in Brazil later this year and we hope that soon we will be able to sell them globally," Bohrer tells Newsweek
"Our desire is to see more and more wizards and witches flying around the world!"
the team is offering "flight classes" to learn how to "fly" on the new form of transportation
The classes are offered out of the city of Belo Horizonte and will cost less than $20 USD
Bohrer says there are also plans to make the broomsticks compatible with the two-wheeled hoverboards
Newsweek is committed to challenging conventional wisdom and finding connections in the search for common ground

The fungus induces a hormone imbalance in the plant
leading to excessive growth of infected tissue and siphoning off the energy that should be used for fruit and root growth
according to an article by researchers at the University of São Paulo in New Phytologist (infected cocoa pod with fungi sprouting in the affected area; photo: researchers’ archive)
according to an article by researchers at the University of São Paulo in New Phytologist
By José Tadeu Arantes | Agência FAPESP – The worst crisis ever suffered by Brazil’s growers of cocoa trees was due to a severe outbreak of witch’s broom disease
caused by the fungus Moniliophthora perniciosa
rotting and death of the affected parts of cocoa trees
which sprout bundles of stunted twigs resembling old brooms
in 1989 the disease spread to the south of Bahia
Brazil was then the world’s second-largest grower of the crop
producing more than 400,000 metric tons of cocoa beans per year in the mid-1980s
its annual harvest had fallen to about 100,000 tons by 2000
Falling incomes and rising debt wiped out many cocoa farms
bankrupting growers and driving up unemployment
as Brazilian cocoa trees are grown in the shade of Atlantic Rainforest remnants and have traditionally been an important incentive for conservation of the biome
Several initiatives have been undertaken since then
Healthy trees can be seen alongside trees blighted by the disease
Bahia is no longer Brazil’s foremost cocoa-producing state
with a national crop of 250,000 tons in 2020
A study conducted in Brazil by the University of São Paulo’s Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture (CENA-USP) and Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (ESALQ-USP), with local and foreign partners, has brought to light important new information about the process of infection by M. perniciosa. The findings are reported in an article in the journal New Phytologist
a professor at CENA-USP and principal investigator for the study
rotten fruit was considered the main cause of cocoa crop losses
The hormone cytokinin is known to induce the formation of metabolic sinks in plants
and this appears to be the pathogen’s strategy
It’s possible that the fungus uses cytokinin to promote an increase in biomass in roots and other tissues it infects
it opportunistically uses the dry matter to grow and reproduce.”
This new knowledge directly affects strategies for managing the disease
which until now have failed to take into account the extent to which the fungus inhibits root growth
and should indeed be intensified to minimize the occurrence of metabolic sinks
the cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao) is an evergreen that blooms and bears fruit the whole year round but begins to produce pods and beans only at age five or six
Its physiology is also hard to study because of its size
These are the reasons why little progress has been made in research on the disease using the cocoa tree directly
fast-growing species that’s also susceptible to infection by the same fungus: the Micro-Tom tomato,” he said
a dwarf variety of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)
is widely used as a laboratory model in botanical research
for reasons analogous to those that justify the use of mice in studies of human biology and medical research
The plant is only 15 centimeters in height and has a 90-day life cycle from seed to seed
“Lázaro Peres
professor at ESALQ-USP and a co-author of the article
has conducted a great deal of research using the Micro-Tom
He has a collection of strains with mutant genes and transgenic lines
including several mutants with alterations for hormone synthesis or perception,” Figueira said
“Because the witch’s broom fungus infects tomato
and there was a suspicion that in doing so it caused a hormone imbalance
we investigated a series of mutants with hormone synthesis or perception genes to see if any didn’t display symptoms or were more susceptible to the fungus
What we found was that the cytokinin-deficient mutant didn’t manifest symptoms
suggesting the hormone’s involvement in the appearance of symptoms
“We confirmed this involvement in several ways
by quantifying the cytokinins in infected tissue and in fungal mycelium
applying synthetic hormones to simulate symptoms of the disease
using synthetic inhibitors of hormone perception to reverse the symptoms
and using a transgenic line that expresses a reporter gene directed by a cytokinin-induced promoter
the expression of cytokinin signaling marker genes
All assays confirmed the hormone’s role in the pathogenesis of witch’s broom.”
The article “Moniliophthora perniciosa, the causal agent of witches’ broom disease of cacao, interferes with cytokinin metabolism during infection of Micro-Tom tomato and promotes symptom development” can be retrieved from: nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/nph.17386

A team from Bangladesh has won a Bronze Medal and an Honourable Mention at the recently held 17th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) 2024. Tasdik Ahmed Tonmoy from Govt. Laboratory High School, Rajshahi, won the Bronze medal, and Labib Bin Azad from Notre Dame College won the Honourable Mention.
This year, Tasdik Ahmed Tonmoy won the Bronze medal and made history as the youngest IOAA medalist from Bangladesh. Regarding his achievement, he said, "My journey in the Olympiad began when I was in the sixth grade. From then on, I dreamed of one day representing my country on foreign soil and winning a medal for my nation." He further explains although this is a dream come true, he will strive for "another opportunity to raise Bangladesh's flag even higher on the global stage."
Another member, Labib Bin Azad earned an Honourable Mention. He said he did not imagine this in his first attempt. as he would be selected from the national level to become a member of an international team representing Bangladesh. "I am grateful to bring home an international achievement for my country," he added.
Team Leader Fahim Rajit Hossain shared, "This year's participants were mostly new to the Olympiad circuit. Since the field of astronomy and astrophysics is relatively new from our country's perspective, we couldn't predict such a brilliant performance from them in their first participation."
Team Bangladesh will also compete at the upcoming 3rd International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics Junior (IOAA Jr.) in Kathmandu, Nepal this October. "We are now focused on preparing for our first-ever participation in the IOAA Jr," added Sadman S. Azad, Public Relations Manager of BDOAA.
The team says they dedicate this success to all martyrs of the Anti-Discriminatory student movement in Bangladesh last month, who sacrificed their lives for a reformed Bangladesh.
