Metrics details
Biogeographical regions (geographically distinct assemblages of species and communities) constitute a cornerstone for ecology
Species turnover measures are often used to quantify spatial biodiversity patterns
but algorithms based on similarity can be sensitive to common sampling biases in species distribution data
Here we apply a community detection approach from network theory that incorporates complex
We demonstrate the performance of the method by applying it to all amphibian species in the world (c
17,600) and a hypothetical data set containing a zone of biotic transition
our approach tackles the challenges posed by transition zones and succeeds in retrieving a larger number of commonly recognized biogeographical regions
This method can be applied to generate objective
data-derived identification and delimitation of the world's biogeographical regions
precipitation and their distribution over the year
such as changes in land use and land cover (for example
Sp3) occur in the generally recognized Bioregion X
Species diversity is measured from five grid cells (numbered 1–5)
Note that there is little geographical overlap between the species ranges
(b) Diversity similarity (set measures) between grid cells
which computes the similarity in number of shared species (the Jaccard index is shown here)
Note that the distance between grid cell 1 and 5 is zero
connectivity between grid cells is established through the species they contain
grid cells 1 and 5 are ‘connected’ by a single step through one species (Sp2)
which does not occur in either cell but occurs in other cells (2 and 4) occupied by species that also occur in cells 1 and 5 (Sp1 and Sp3
Here we present a data-driven approach that uses associational networks to minimize the problems described above and to extract more community level information from species occurrence data
We show that this method can be used to successfully detect biogeographical regions in two well-validated empirical data sets: all amphibians of the world
and all vascular plants of the United States of America
The empirical data sets provide contrasting examples of how biodiversity data is currently available: they are aggregated at different scales (global and national)
grain sizes (two degree grid cells versus US counties)
and were constructed under different sampling methodologies
We then further validate our method on a hypothetical data set containing a zone of biotic transition
Our results are strikingly congruent with opinion based bioregions
indicating that the network method developed here holds the potential to greatly improve the identification and delimitation of the world's biogeographical regions
(a) Amphibian biogeographical regions of the world determined from geographical range data
Similar colours indicate membership to a higher level clustering
The analysis used a resolution of two degree grid cells
(b) Species range limits coloured by region
Geographically close and neighbouring regions were given contrasting colours to highlight boundaries and boundary mixing
Each geographical range polygon was plotted with a low opacity (0.1)
from largest to smallest on a global level
so that regions with more species appear brighter
Map of the USA showing how affinity decreases relative to an arbitrarily chosen county under (a) a network measure of distance and (b) a species similarity measure (here β-similarity)
The colour gradient ranges from dark (high similarity) to light (low similarity)
The network measure allows mid to narrow ranged species to contribute more strongly to the metric
revealing sharper boundaries of biogeographical regions
The maps show demarcations for three subsets of the USDA plant database: all native plants
The left column was determined by the map equation (under the optimal number of clusters in each analysis)
while the middle and right columns were determined by a similarity approach (optimal number of clusters and an arbitrarily finer scale delineation
biogeographical regions were coloured differently to aid visualization (rather than reflect identify)
the network approach captures with broad brushstrokes the patterns of the generally recognized biomes and biogeographical regions of the USA
Although state-level biases are apparent from both methodologies
they are strikingly more recurrent in the similarity approach
To explore whether the similarity approach could be arbitrarily forced to unveil deeper structure, we also chose to visualize the partitions with 40 clusters selected, although this delineation is not optimal (Fig. 5
Some biogeographical structure becomes apparent at this level—the American Great Plains is cleanly separated from the American West
although this bioregion unrealistically extends into the American Southwest desert
The reconstruction based on these 40 clusters is also plagued by a number of boundaries coincident with the US state boundaries in the American midwest
the Great Plains division becomes apparent
as well as a clean separation of the Southwest desert from the American West
a latitudinal boundary is evident in the Eastern Temperate Forests bioregion
but also contains ample state-level biases
The apparent lack of hierarchy in the data set is likely an issue of large grain and low scale (counties within a single country)
such as a database produced from geographical coordinates
Applied to the three USDA data sets of native plants
the number of clusters selected as optimal by the map equation was 25 for all plants
Because the algorithm that seeks the best partition is stochastic
we ran it 1,000 times and selected the partition that minimized the scoring function in the map equation
Broad similarities are evident across the network clustering results for all native plants, trees and non-trees (Fig. 5
the Everglades are only evident from the tree only data set
The West Coast forms a separate bioregion under the analysis of all plants as well as all non-trees
but the Pacific Northwest is omitted from this bioregion when only trees are considered
the American Great Plains appear much smaller when only trees are considered
These differences may reflect intrinsic biological differences among the data sets analysed (for example
differences in ecological niche conservatism
the southern deserts of Arizona and surrounding areas follow some rigid-state boundaries
suggesting that large county sizes in the area obscure finer demarcation
State-level biases are also evident in Lousiana for the native tree data
Our network analyses of empirical and hypothetical data sets reveal important differences as compared with approaches based on species similarity
These are not only quantitative in terms of resolution—that is
the total number of regions identified—but also qualitative
affecting both the areas and the boundaries of biogeographical regions
because we followed their procedure for merging regions with <10 grid cells into the closest regions
we interpret this difference as stemming from a fundamental difference in methodology—our approach clusters patterns of presence–absence relationships
while theirs identifies clusters of grid cells with low distributional and phylodistributional turnover
which similarly identifies Weber's line as the realm boundary between the Oriental and Oceanian faunas
although it does not identify Wallace's line
This suggests that Weber's line may be more robust and independent of methodology than Wallace's line
using SDMs for bioregion inference could become conceptually circular
If we are to understand how species cluster into distinct bioregions
and how the boundaries of these bioregions relate to environmental gradients
We cannot use SDMs to delineate the same bioregions that are then used to compare their correspondence with the environmental variables
because these variables are already the major component of SDMs
we argue that new methods for biogeographical delineation must be designed around the current challenges offered by real occurrence data—which are geographically and taxonomically biased
but nevertheless constitute the most reliable evidence on where species occur
Here we have provided evidence that the network approach presented here outperforms the current methods based on similarity
they rely on robust and well-sampled species-level phylogenies (which are currently lacking for many organismal groups) and may introduce circularity when using the identified bioregions for measuring the degree of phylogenetic niche conservatism as shifts in bioregions are commonly associated with speciation events
can be subsequently used to shed light on the temporal origin
evolution and phylogenetic relatedness of bioregions
remain in order to further advance bioregionalizations:
New methodologies for bioregion delineation need to be reproducible and transparent about their assumptions
They should offer measures of reliability regarding the number and boundaries of species clusters identified
for example through bootstrapping techniques
the delimitation of the same bioregion may be more or less robust along different edges
they should be regularly validated through ground truthing
More than a century after the first biogeographical regions were proposed8
we may now have enough data to delimit the world's biogeographical regions in greater detail than Wallace could ever envision
illustrates that new methodologies play a crucial role in this process and that network methods offer a new set of exciting tools to classify
delimit and better understand biodiversity
We first build the network to be clustered
and then we choose the best clustering algorithm to infer bioregions
tolerance to specific climatic and environmental variables
ecological interactions) as well as the region's physical features (for example
A more complicated pattern is the number of joint occurrences, where two species occupy the same two localities. This can be measured as the number of four paths that complete a loop (Fig. 2a)
These relationships can be combined to reveal properties of geographical ranges
the number of 3-paths between a species A and locality B divided by the number of 2-paths exiting from species A is the fraction of co-occurrences of species A that also occupy locality B
By setting up the machinery to capture ‘higher-order’ patterns
we can detect complex patterns of presence-absence
The adjacency matrix A of this network formally expresses species occurrences
we order first by species (1...n) and second by grid cells (n + 1...n + m)
producing a square matrix with n + m rows and n + m columns
where B is the binary presence–absence matrix
in which rows are taxa and columns are localities
The upper left block and lower right block in this matrix are zeroes
because species cannot occur in species and localities cannot occur in localities
The square of the adjacency matrix A gives the co-occurrence matrix C between taxa as the upper left square
or number of co-occurrences between pairs of species
and the matrix of shared species S as the bottom right square or number of shared species between the pairs of grid cells
where elements in the upper right and lower left squares of the matrix are zeroes because 2-paths are exclusively between two species or between two localities
Total paths of length i between nodes can be expressed by raising the matrix to the ith power
new measures can be derived and tools from network theory can be readily applied
In the next section we apply a common clustering algorithm to this bipartite network
The map equation is a general approach that
It then randomly chooses a species found in that grid cell
examines the geographical range of that species
and selects a grid cell at random within its geographical range
It repeats this process iteratively and exhaustively
In biota with substantial biogeographical structure
the algorithm would spend long time intervals within bioregions
crossing only when it selected a cross-bioregion species
where both the species distribution data alone and combined with phylogenetic information was used to infer zoogeographical regions and realms at a global scale
plant distributions are aggregated differently across the states
causing systematic compositional biases across state borders
no quantitative bioregion delineation of these data are available for direct comparison
the number of clusters selected as optimal was shown to fully determine whether or not the transition zone appeared as distinct biogeographical regions
This result was used to illustrate the danger of classifying transition zones as distinct biogeographical regions
but also highlights the sensitivity of inferring biogeographical regions based on species similarity measures

Federal authorities say this depicts Leticia Vilhena Ferreira of Indian Head Park inside the U.S
A Brazilian citizen who lives in Indian Head Park is the latest Illinois resident to face criminal charges for allegedly taking part in the Jan
allegedly sent someone a text message the day after the breach that asked
“Do you think they will go after all the people walking in the capitol area?”
Ferreira is charged with knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority
and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds
Court records show Ferreira was interviewed at her home by authorities on April 2
Though she couldn’t vote in the 2020 election
she said she wanted to see then-President Donald Trump speak and traveled to Washington
Ferreira said she didn’t get to hear Trump’s speech because so many people started to march toward the Capitol
She said she followed them into the building and spent about 20 minutes inside
She gave the feds photos and video she took
and they said alarms were sounding inside the building when Ferreira began one of the recordings
Though other videos showed Ferreira in the Capitol Crypt when rioters began to rush Capitol police
records show “Ferreira did not appear to have participated in any assault on officers.”
Ferreira is the 26th known Illinoisan to be charged in connection with the Capitol breach. Prosecutors earlier this year charged Anthony Carollo of Lockport, Cody Vollan of Flossmoor and Jeremiah Carollo of Glen Carbon
Christopher and Tina Logsdon of Sesser were also charged Jan
18 with entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly conduct in a Capitol building; and parading
demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building
No details have been released about the allegations against them

Tonny Vilhena – What can he add to Krasnodar
Manuel Veth –Krasnodar have signed Feyenoord attacking midfielder Tonny Vilhena
Linked with several teams in Western Europe
the Dutch midfielder was brought in to help secure Champions League qualification but also to compensate for the injury sustained by Swedish attacking midfielder Viktor Claesson
Viktor Claesson’s injury in June was a significant shock for Krasnodar. The Swedish attacking midfielder tore his ACL on June 10 during Sweden’s European Championship qualification match against Spain. It was a major shock for Krasnodar
had finished third last season and will enter the Champions League in the third round of qualifying
It is a bit like a poker online game for Krasnodar. Losing one of their best cards they now hope that reshuffling the deck by signing Tonny Vilhena will help the club qualify for the Champions League
The 24-year-old Tonny Vilhena joins Krasnodar after scoring six goals and seven assists in the Dutch Eredivisie last season. Furthermore, Vilhena was on the pitch in 95% of Feyenoord’s overall playing time this season and involved in 17% of the club’s goals
he played in a more central role for the Dutch side
Whereas Claesson likes plays almost like an inverted playmaking winger Tonny Vilhena sits much deeper in the field
More of a quarterback than an attacking midfielder he still likes to get involved when his side wins the ball and rushes forward
At the same time, both players are capable of playing on the left flank. Going by the Wyscout heatmap Tonny Vilhena often operates in the same areas as Claesson. But whereas Claesson seems to primarily operate in the final third Tonny Vilhena covers both the final third but also the area between the box and the middle line
Hence, Tonny Vilhena almost provides an upgrade in that regard on the left-flank. A player capable of operating both defensively and offensively. That, in turn, could allow head coach Murad Musaev to switch his formation from his prefered 4-3-3 to a 3-5-3 in which Vilhena could play almost like a wing-back
In fact, in Claesson, Krasnodar are losing their most productive player. Vilhena and other squad players like Shapi Suleymanov could go some way to compensate in the loss of production
Furthermore, in Vilhena Krasnodar add another important element to their passing game. The short-pass buildup with quick attacks is, in fact, an important part of the DNA for this Krasnodar side under Musaev
Tonny Vilhena played 46.47 passes per 90 minutes last season
which would rank him third among Krasnodar’s attacking players
only Kristoffer Olsson completed more passes (86.26% per 90 minutes) than Krasnodar’s new Dutch signing
Hence, Tonny Vilhena will not be a one-to-one replacement for the injured Claesson. Indeed it might be impossible to replace the Swedish attacking midfielder, but Vilhena’s addition to the team will give Krasnodar more depth and also more tactical flexibility going forward

Able-bodied models Cleo Pires and Paulo Vilhena appear in controversial spread in support of Paralympics
Vogue Brazil has come under fire for a spread in its September issue to commemorate the beginning of the Paralympic Games in Rio
who appear to have disabilities — Pires has her right arm amputated
the disabilities are mere Photoshop illusions — both Pires and Vilhena are able-bodied
the models are also pictured with two Paralympic athletes whose disabilities they were digitally altered to resemble — table tennis player Bruna Alexandre
and sitting volleyball player Renato Leite
Done with the support of the Brazilian Paralympics Committee and the athletes themselves, the spread was created “to attract visibility to the Special Olympics and highlight the relevance of Brazilian disabled athletes in the panorama of the national sport,” according to the magazine’s Instagram
The campaign was implemented because reportedly only 20 percent of tickets to the Paralympic Games
the well-meaning campaign has drawn ire from those who feel that actually disabled models — perhaps like the athletes in question — should have been given the opportunity and the space to model in the shoot themselves
“There’s no shortage of disabled people to take the place of spokesperson in these adverts and show society that yes, they exist and they deserve as much space in the media as us,” said feminist writer Natália Belizario, according to The Telegraph
Disabilities charity Scope spokesperson Richard Lane told Huffington Post UK that it was “hard to understand why Vogue Brazil felt the need to use models who aren’t disabled in a Paralympic photoshoot
The magazine has missed the perfect opportunity to celebrate Brazil’s talented Paralympians as sporting equals
It’s so rare to see positive and powerful representations of disabled people in the media.”

The architects stripped right down to the structural elements (image: Fernando Guerra/FG+SG)
Destruction was preservation at the new home of the Museum of Design and Fashion
Ricardo Carvalho & Joana Vilhena Arquitectos took a 1950s bank in the historic centre of the city and sandblasted it to within an inch of its life
The reason for what Carvalho describes as this “selective destruction” is that the original Banco Nacional Ultramarino – a Viennese-style repository of Portugal’s colonial wealth – was bought in 2004 by another bank and subjected to a crass corporate makeover
When the local heritage body found out what was happening it was too late
Most of the period detailing had been destroyed
the only way to restore its dignity was to blast away any trace of the new fit-out
notably a marble counter which swerves through the ground floor
the new interior borrows the language of construction: shelving is held together with dry wall brackets
the curtains are made of construction site covers and the floor is covered in road paint
In this landscape sit Eames chairs and John Galliano gowns – a tiny portion of Francisco Capelo’s 2,500-piece design collection
There’s a beautiful quality of light in the galleries
One reason for this is that the building occupies an entire block and has long windows along all four sides – a factor that also makes one very aware of the city outside
which has been turned into a giant glow lamp
only the ground and first floors have been converted but the rest of the building will be made ready next year
Asked whether he took his cue for the design from Lacaton and Vassal’s stripped Palais de Tokyo in Paris
I was actually inspired by some of the old factory buildings at Donald Judd’s Cinati Foundation in Marfa

The celebration period of the feast of St Publius has also witnessed the inauguration of the restoration project on Floriana’s Vilhena Fountain
The restoration of the fountain was carried out by the Department of Public Works through a 200,000 euro investment
This monument enjoys the highest grade of protection
Project Coordinator Marvienne Camilleri explained that the restoration works included interventions on the pedestal
which had not worked for many years and did not retain water
The architect added that the fountain is now fitted with new water and lighting systems
Investment was also made in a new system of security cameras to safeguard the area
Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia stated during the inauguration that this monument is not just a symbol of Floriana residents
The Parliamentary Secretary reiterated the commitment of the Department of Public Works to continue working on other similar projects in order to safeguard the national heritage

A combination who scored a whopping 95.6% dressage score despite two rider memory lapses are now heading for the national semi-finals
British-based Portuguese rider Luis Filipe Vilhena and Secret Secret won the four-year-old class at Beechwood Equestrian Centre on 3 June
Luis told H&H he and Secret had already qualified at Hickstead in May, despite the fact he had been injured for three months and only got back on the stallion the week before the show
so took him to Beechwood for the experience
And he added that the morning of the show did not go entirely to plan
“I keep my horses in the field – all my stallions live out together and people tell me I’m crazy but they’re happy and I like to see them in the field – and I’d been teaching all the day before
and that day a guy changed something and broke the hose,” he said
“I got him in on the Saturday to give him a bath because he was really dirty but I couldn’t
I was running late so I just had to brush him quickly
put him on the horsebox and take him to the show.”
Luis was a bit late arriving so just tacked up – “I put the numnah on and it got dirty straight away!” – and went into the warm-up
“I thought ‘Just enjoy the horse’,” he said
and the connection was amazing; it was like we were dancing together.”
“And that’s not the first time it’s happened
I don’t compete that much – I don’t even know where the letters are – as what I like is teaching horses and people to grand prix
although I am enjoying competing a bit more now.”
Luis said the score is “one of those things I still don’t really believe” – and he is determined to remember the test for next month’s semi-final, in hopes of qualifying for the final at the British Dressage National Championships in September
“It probably won’t happen again – although you may see this horse at an Olympic Games!” he said
“It was a once-in-a-lifetime thing; I’m still on cloud nine.”
Southampton have spoken to Feyenoord about midfielder Tonny Vilhena.
The 20-year-old has come through the Dutch side's youth academy. His father is from Angola while his mother is from the Holland - choosing the latter to represent internationally.
He has represented his country up to under 21 level and was a key player for coach Ronald Koeman during his time at the club - before he took the reigns over at Southampton last summer.
The talented midfielder has featured 16 times in all competitions for the Rotterdam-based club this season.
Vilhena is the third Feyernoord starlet that Koeman is keen to bring to St. Mary's.
Up-and-coming Dutch centre halves Terence Kongolo and Sven van Beek are also being targeted for summer moves.

is currently on display in an exhibition at Spain’s Museo Naval de Madrid
through a collaboration with Heritage Malta
entitled The Mark of Jorge Juan − The Legacy of an Enlightened Scientist
marks 250 years since the death of one of the most brilliant sailors in the Spanish Navy’s history
Jorge Juan’s mark remained indelible in fields such as politics
contributing extraordinarily to the Enlightenment thought of his time
this exhibition in the Spanish capital offers a wider
all-encompassing analysis of this outstanding figure
His connection to the Order of St John in Malta is explored in the first of these units
which narrates his journey to the island of Malta as a young boy in 1722 to join the Order
in which he rose through the ranks to become a page to the grand master in 1725
an oil on canvas painting at the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta
depicting Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena with pages
was identified as a very plausible depiction of a young Jorge Juan
based on his known time frames within the Order
eventually leading to its loan by Heritage Malta to the Museo Naval de Madrid
This painting was executed by Maltese artist Enrico Regnaud to celebrate the grand master’s bestowment of the blessed sword and hat by Pope Benedict XIII
which were blessed in St Peter’s on Christmas Eve of 1724 and arrived in Malta on May 3
The exhibition will run until the end of March. For more information, click here
the richness of the topography lies in it’s contained flatness
a feature that the portuguese architect seeks to capture with the stark white planes of the building
the L-shaped plan serves to maximize the building’s exposure to the south-light and sun-soaked mountainous views

I am a student reading for a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in history of art. As part of my thesis I am researching and compiling a catalogue of the known portraits and representations of Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, 66th Grandmaster of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jersusalem, Rhodes and Malta, under the tutelage of Keith Paul Sciberras.
Since my dissertation requires that I also include portraits or representations of the grandmaster that are within private collections in the Maltese Islands, I am kindly asking anyone who has within their private collection a portrait or representation of this grandmaster to – if they deem it appropriate – contact me.

Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art gallery brings Lawrence Weiner to Lisbon in Around the World
an exhibition that shares its name with a work made in 2020 by the artist
whose intention is to think about location based on an imaginary line of reference
The artist displays works that are geographical statements on location in relation to the equator
the line that divides the Earth into two hemispheres
PLACED ABOVE THE EQUATOR/COLOCADO ACIMA DO EQUADOR – it’s important to underline the term «placed»
which points to the randomness of location
as if it were a common diagnosis made in relation to the world (geographical
below to the left or to the right of the equator
located according to the conceptual line that divides the world
Bartomeu Marí writes in the exhibition text: «The work invites us to be aware of the finitude of the world
of our freedom and desire to move.» Affirmative sentences
that remind us of our own relationship with location
«The artist has stated that his works’ creation is not site-specific but will be welcomed and understood in a specific context»
All the works will be understood in different ways depending on the context
but this is an exhibition whose concept is based
This exhibition could be presented anywhere in the world
but would that the be reality of Western artistic creation
A work is not site-specific when it was not conceived especially for a venue
when we talk about the rooms that may be excluded from the exhibition network
is the Northern Hemisphere’s art scene not exclusive to the Northern Hemisphere
Around the World is the chance to see Lawrence Weiner’s work – a remarkable artist in the conceptual art context of the 1960s – through a disruptive work that questions contemporary existence itself
one of Weiner’s most recognised works about his intentions
while we see the most recent exhibition in Lisbon
And we think about the assertiveness of a visual work in the current media context of Western society
To be or not to be seen is the most recent version of being or not being
to be or not be before something or someone who recognises us
Around the World is on view at Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art until October 30.

To commemorate the 300th anniversary of the accession of Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena
MIDI plc recently hosted two lectures on the architectural legacy of this popular and benevolent grandmaster at the chapel dedicated to St Anthony of Padua at Fort Manoel
The first lecture was conducted by Conrad Thake
His presentation was followed by that of Stephen Spiteri
author of several books and studies on the military history and fortifications of Malta
Thake gave an overview of the architectural legacy of Grand Master Anton Manuel de Vilhena in the Maltese islands.
During the magistracy of Grand Master De Vilhena
several major architectural and urban projects were undertaken
which included the total remodelling of the entrance area to the walled citadel
the foundation of Floriana as a residential town, Casa Leoni in Santa Venera and the Manoel Theatre in Valletta.
Thake also referred to various welfare state projects founded by De Vilhena
such as the Conservatorio and Ospizio in Floriana
He also mentioned the evolution of the baroque architectural style in Malta.
Spiteri spoke about the vast array of fortification projects undertaken during De Vilhena’s magistracy
The Grand Master’s 14-year rule effectively witnessed modernisation and
the completion of many of the ambitious defensive schemes that had been set in motion in course of the previous centuries to defend Valletta and the islands’ harbours
settlements and shores – a legacy succinctly captured in the first two lines of the Latin inscription crowning the entrance into Fort Manoel – Ad Val
Securitatem (for the protection of the City of Valletta and the greater security of the state).
Spiteri showed how the fortified landscape
as it is familiar to us today (with the exception of Fort Tigné
Fort Chambrai in Gozo and the coastal entrenchments erected in the 1760/1970s) came largely together in the course of De Vilhena’s magistracy
The many escutcheons which once bore De Vilhena’s coat-of-arms and adorned the ramparts and gates of the fortified city of Vittoriosa
the Naxxar and Ta’ Falca entrenchments and Ras il-Qala Battery (Gozo) all stand monument to the scale and magnitude of the fortification works undertaken during the grandmaster’s reign and his unstinting commitment to the defence of the Hospitaller realm
the public also had the opportunity to view the restoration works carried out by MIDI at Fort Manoel
where one of the most important French military architects of the time
who among other projects was responsible for the design and development of Fort Manoel
