In terms of the volume of nanomedicine research
and biology—issues that are of vital importance for contemporary societies
The field’s global market share totalled some $78 billion dollars in 2012
the market is expected to grow to nearly $200 billion
Nanomedicine derives much of its rhetorical, technological, and scientific strength from the scale on which it operates (1 to 100 nm), the size of molecules and biochemical functions
published Nanomedicine: Basic Capabilities
the first of two volumes he dedicated to the subject
that range from complicated drugs to the above mentioned nanobots
there is a general agreement that nanomedicine entails the application of nanotechnology in medicine and that it will profoundly impact medical practice
A further topic of debate is nanomedicine’s genealogy, in particular its connections to molecular medicine and nanotechnology. The case of nanotechnology is exemplary: on one hand, its potential—in terms of science but also in regard to funding and recognition—is often mobilized by nanomedicine proponents; on the other
there is an attempt to distance nanomedicine from nanotechnology
for fear of being damaged by the perceived “hype” that surrounds it
The push is then for nanomedicine to emerge not as a subdiscipline of nanotechnology but as a parallel field
Although nanomedicine research and development is actively pursued in numerous countries, the United States, the EU (particularly Germany), and Japan have made significant contributions from the field’s outset. This is reflected both in the number of articles published and in that of patents filed
both of which have grown exponentially since 2004
nanomedicine research in China grew with respect to publications in the field
and the country ranked second only to the United States in the number of research articles published
Such work has also been heavily funded by the private sector
A study led by the European Science and Technology Observatory found that over 200 European companies were researching and developing nanomedicine applications
many of which were coordinating their efforts
Work in novel therapeutics and drug delivery systems strives to develop and design nanoparticles and nanostructures that are noninvasive and can target specific diseases
Allied with very precise means for diagnosis
these drug delivery systems would enable equally precise site-specific therapeutics and fewer side effects
The area of drug delivery accounts for a large portion of nanomedicine’s scientific publications

Italy and France have already sent two water-bombing aircraft each after the Portuguese government on Monday requested help under the EU civil protection mechanism."We are in a stressful situation

While this competition is one of the most unpredictable in the country
that doesn’t mean that we cannot have some normality around here once in a while
it is something of news to have “normality in the Segunda Liga” at least one weekend
Tondela drew their match against Académico in the Beiras derby
That draw made it that the first ten teams on the table (from Académico in 10th to Tondela in 1st place) are only separated by nine points
Penafiel got back to winning ways with a convincing win against Portimonense
The battle for immediate promotion (top two places) is absolutely on fire with Alverca in third place with 39 points
Penafiel in second with 40 and Tondela are leaders with 41 points
everything went back to normal as well: FC Porto B lost again
and now on the verge of getting relegated to the third tier
Oliveirense and Mafra are not very interested in getting out of the relegation zone as all of them lost their respective matches
Feirense is now the in-form team of the competition
Four wins in a row puts them only four points short of the promotion spots
That is exactly what happened with the Fogaceiros
While they were playing good tactical football
they were crying about how unlucky they were
They left the tactics a bit aside and started playing with hate in their eyes
surprise: four straight wins and a serious candidate to get back to the main stage in Portuguese football
It is rare for me to say something good about “game destroyers”
defensive midfielders in general that cannot make a good pass is something that irritates me
the moves and are as gracious as Samba Koné
it is hard not to pick them as the best player
Koné taught Tondela that if they cannot build their play through the middle
Samba Koné covered every inch of midfield and launched counter attacks looking like prime Paul Pogba
And forced Tondela to cross the ball into the penalty area for more that 100 minutes because they couldn’t create anything any other way

British entries were conspicuous by their absence after failing to clear import controls
On Friday, 240 experts from 40 countries descended on Viseu in northern Portugal for the World Cheese Awards
with a washed-rind raw sheep’s milk cheese from the host country
the British contingent noticed something strange: gaps on several of the tables
and were robbed of the chance to compete with the world’s best
Occasionally some countries’ cheeses don’t make it, said John Farrand, director of the Guild of Fine Food
But Farrand added the Guild is granted a special licence each year to import cheeses
and British cheesemakers complied with all the conditions

it became apparent that the cheeses hadn’t been cleared
even on Friday we were still fighting to get some clarity and clear instruction on what wasn’t right
but we had no success,” Farrand told the Observer yesterday
Up to 252 cheeses from 67 makers may have been affected
Judge James Grant, co-founder of the Real Cheese Project, said: “It’s really devastating. The UK’s going through an incredible change as far as cheese is going. There’s an incredible amount of hard work from these cheesemakers who are putting handmade artisan cheese back on the map. It’s really, really sad.”
Quicke added she was “so sad that many English cheeses, including ours, were not able to be judged alongside our international counterparts, but I am not entirely surprised.”
For Grant, it wasn’t just that Britain’s cheeses weren’t able to receive any medals – one or two often make the top 10, and a British cheese called Cornish kern last won in 2017. But each of the 4,786 cheeses judged receives feedback, giving makers a chance to learn and improve their product.
Read more“Hundreds of British cheesemakers have worked so hard and are so proud of what they do.” Grant added that the World Cheese Awards can “turn people’s lives around,” and predicted the Portuguese winner’s life would “change overnight.” For the cheesemakers to “receive a blow like this within hours of the largest cheese competition about to open was a hammer blow not only for British cheese
part of the team behind yarlington and rollright
was “very disappointed” they couldn’t compete
“What it really shows is that it’s very hard to export cheese post Brexit
The Guild will have done everything in their power to make it happen
but if someone at the border decides something isn’t quite right
“We are really disappointed to not compete but it raises the more important question of what kind of damage are export controls with our nearest trading partner doing to our industry?”

Organiser of the event say the delays ‘would not have been a thing’ before Brexit

Dozens of British cheesemakers had their dreams crushed after their entries to the World Cheese Awards were delayed due to post-Brexit custom checks
Nearly 250 experts from 47 countries participated in the World Cheese Awards in Viseu
Some 4,786 cheeses were tested by judges with a soft
spoonable sheep’s milk cheese made by a Spanish cheesemaker named the best cheese on the planet
British cheesemakers were in for a shock when they noticed big gaps on the tables where their entries should have been
and distraught craftsmen were robbed of the chance to compete in the awards
John Farrand, director at the Guild of Fine Food, which organises the event, said the delays "would not have been a thing" before the UK left the European Union.
On some occasions, cheeses from across the world don’t make it to the awards. However, the Guild of Fine Food is granted a special licence to import cheeses, and British cheesemakers complied with all the conditions, Mr Farrand said.
Up to 252 cheeses from 67 British makers may have been affected.
Judge James Grant, co-founder of the Real Cheese Project, attacked the “Brexit red tape” and branded the incident “devastating” and “sad”.
“It’s really devastating,” he told the Observer.
“The UK’s going through an incredible change as far as cheese is going. There’s an incredible amount of hard work from these cheesemakers who are putting handmade artisan cheese back on the map. It’s really, really sad.”
Mr Grant added that since Brexit, importing and exporting cheese has “become more challenging, with the increase of bureaucracy and red tape”.
In 2017, a Cornish cheese won the coveted award, the UK's most recent victory. Grant also bemoaned the fact that the British fromagers, who had put in a great deal of effort during the build-up, had been denied the chance to "change lives overnight”.
This year’s competition – already the world’s largest cheese-only awards – was the most significant to date, with a record number of entries, organisers said.
Some 4,786 cheeses from 47 countries were evaluated by 240 judges from 40 countries, with experts in the field of cheese such as technologists and cheese graders, as well as retailers and buyers, chefs and journalists.
The cheeses, distributed across 104 tables, were assessed by judges in groups of two or three.
Points were allocated based on appearance, aroma, texture, mouthfeel and flavour, with the tally equivalent to a bronze, silver, gold or no medal. Britain’s cheeses did not receive any medals.

Should you ever cover the 4,870 miles that separate Staunton from its “sister," consider these four tips for your stay:

Valise Coman was elected in 2012 (if I correctly read the signage in front of city hall.) He leads a municipality spread over more than 170 square miles
the vast majority of it forested mountainside
Citizens (“Viseuvians” has a nice ring…) live in the river valley floor
It serves as the primary commercial corridor
was more hurried and heavier than I’d expected
Viseu’s downtown includes several recently constructed “box" stores
Most of the older storefronts appeared to have had recent paint jobs
The construction underway of a substantial addition to the hospital is a point of civic pride.
Mayor Valise Coman had smiles and a time for a chat with everyone who asked a question
He’s very definitely a public figure.
Coman owns a manufacturing facility that employs a couple of hundred workers
He also has invested personal resources into the community’s development.

Perhaps most noticeably is the traditional homestead complex next to the train station
it resembles the American Frontier Culture Museum
Historic buildings were transferred to this site to preserve them
and to create a venue for cultural education and community celebration.
While giving us a lift after our Mochanita excursion
the mayor answered questions about the city’s connection with Staunton
He remarked that we were the second visitors in the past year who came from the Queen City year to hop the train
“I am very happy to have visitors from our sister city in America
“We appreciate it when people from Staunton initiate contact.
“It is very beneficial to learn from each other’s experiences — cultural
but we are very interested in creating broader development for the community.”
We discussed the similarities between the Staunton and Viseu de Sis: proximity to national parks and forests
commercial hubs and vital downtowns that serve surrounding agricultural industries
The Viseu de Sus farmers’ market dwarfs Staunton’s
Coman noted that he has visited and maintains contact with Viseu’s European sister cities
and provide insight about best practices for communities

or to receive an invitation to visit here and the Shenandoah Valley
the mayor led us to a city memorial for Nicolae Lunca (1837-1862)

A flight from Viseu to Portimão via Cascais
joining a solitary passenger who was already on board
The last time I’d been on a Dornier 228 was in the Caribbean
The signature components felt so familiar: the door for passengers at the rear of the plane
the loudness of the engines (Sevenair thoughtfully place earplugs in seat-back pockets)
I sat in the third row and watched morning fog stretch across low valleys until the Atlantic came to dominate the horizon
That departure lounge video might have come in handy had something gone awry
There were no safety instructions on board; in fact
there was no communication from the pilot at all until we landed in Cascais and were asked to vacate the plane for a crew switch
an upscale beach resort town just west of Lisbon
Sevenair is a small Portuguese aviation company with its fingers in many pies: charter flights
Small planes flying low over the coastline are a common sight in Cascais
Open your Flightradar24 app to identify one of these
it’s Sevenair on one of its circuits stretching the length of mainland Portugal
The airline exclusively flies Dornier 228s for its scheduled services, and the circuit stretches from the Algarve town of Portimão (PRM) to Cascais (CAT)
tucked away in Portugal’s far northeast
(Note that Vila Real airport was closed for runway repairs in the summer of 2019 and has not yet reopened
A Sevenair rep told me that the airport should reopen in 2022.) These Dornier 228s are particularly useful given the short runways in Portimão and Vila Real
As you might have guessed, this is a PSO circuit
benefiting from government subsidies coordinated through Portugal’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing
The circuit been guaranteed subsidies for the next several years at a minimum
What makes this full route so interesting for visitors to Portugal is its obvious practicality
and Bragança are all medium-sized Portuguese cities with broad catchment areas and extensive hinterlands for tourist exploration
They are all excluded from Portugal’s national train network
and their regional marginalization is further reinforced by subpar road connections to coastal hubs
perhaps especially for people heading to the Algarve for a quick weekend of relaxation
There is a standard metal detector and loads of buzz
Most of the airplanes parked on the apron are private
Cascais has the air of a well-off private airport
From Viseu to Portimão the flight spends most of its time over water
passing the Setúbal peninsula and the wider Alentejo before hitting land within spitting distance of the postcard-perfect Praia da Amália
a draw for locals after a mid-morning coffee and pastry
Portimão airport is known locally first as a skydiving hub and only secondarily as an airport with scheduled services
Chief Commercial Officer Alexandre Alves tells me the airline has been in discussions to add to the route map
Sevenair has deep experience with PSO routes (in Madeira
among other places) and have operated services in Guernsey for Aurigny Air Services and in Cape Verde for that country’s Coast Guard
So you never know – perhaps your local airport could be home to the buzz of a Dornier 228 next

Entering Staunton, we’ve all seen the sign: Sister City to Viseu de Sus, Romania. Where is this place? What’s it like? Bonny and Paul Wilson, from Fairfield, recently went there to find out.
Thanks to an introductory letter from Staunton’s Mayor Dull, Mayor Vasile Coman welcomed them, and told them about his city. Like Staunton, Viseu de Sus (roughly pronounced, “Vee-SHOO duh SOOS”) sits in a valley between mountain ranges. It’s a town somewhat smaller than Staunton, in Transylvania, northwest Romania, just a few miles south of the border with Ukraine.
It’s thriving under the leadership of Mayor Coman. A self-made man with a modest demeanor, he built up three wood-processing businesses that collectively employ 1000 people. Partnered with a German firm, they make furniture, doors, window frames, and other products which they export throughout Europe.
Asked how all this was paid for, he replied, “People don’t complain about taxes if they see that all the money goes for good purposes.” Transparency and efficiency were not the norm before his tenure.
Viseu de Sus attracts a thousand tourists a day. Its steam-powered narrow-gauge railway carries visitors in open carriages 31 miles into the forests of the Carpathian mountains, while others climb nearby mountain peaks. Romanians are enthusiastic off-road explorers on mountain bikes, motorcycles, and four-wheel drive vehicles, pushing far into the remote wilderness.
At the intersection of ancient empires, Romania has a diverse cultural and ethnic heritage. German, Hungarian, and Ukranian influences are strong, as are Italian and Spanish. So there are dark Romanians and blond ones, tall ones and short ones. “But lots of really good-looking ones,” the Wilsons said, “both men and women.”
“We loved Romania,” the Wilsons said. “Everyone we met was really nice, we felt safe, the food was delicious, and it was amazingly cheap. Some days we spent less than $60 for food and lodging–for the two of us!”
Staunton’s sister city in Romania is well worth a visit.

will become a smart city thanks to the implementation of a sensor system that will ease the vehicle guidance
as well as the control of the parking spaces
Urbiotica has been selected by Saba and Egis Group as the best technological option to provide a reliable and efficient solution to the project
Saba is a reference industrial operator in the development of solutions in the field of urban mobility
Egis is an international group that operates in sectors of mobility services and construction engineering
Both companies collaborate through the company Semovepark Viseu to manage the regulated parking service of the municipality
The project will include the deployment of a total of 868 Fastprk duo sensors in the payment areas of the on-street public road
Fastprk’s smart parking system uses the LoRa communication protocol and combines magnetic detection with infrared
providing a very reliable and high precision solution over time with this double detection
The sensor immediately detects any change in the occupation of a parking space with an accuracy of 98%
Thanks to this technology the occupation data will be transmitted to the users indicating where to find free spaces
allowing to reduce drastically the time invested in finding parking
in real-time, of any fraud due to lack of payment or if the time paid by the user has been exceeded
the management and control of these spaces will be much more efficient
This solution allows the municipality to optimize its control operations and therefore increase the rotation of vehicles in the area so that a greater number of people can enjoy the use of the places
It is a clear advantage for vehicles looking for parking
as well as for the rest of the drivers who circulate with less congestion and the citizens who enjoy a more relaxed and sustainable environment
Urbiotica was established in 2008 with a very clear foundational vision: technology based on wireless sensor networks will transform how we manage our cities.
Urbiotica leads the revolution of the Internet of Things applied to Smart Cities. The projects implemented in more than 20 countries position us as the leading technology company in the development of smart solutions based on sensor systems, designed to manage urban space more efficiently and sustainably.
