99-year-old Millie Baran collaborates with Albert Marquès — composer
pianist and New York City public school teacher — as part of a musical project to amplify marginalized voices
Baran will do something that she never thought she’d do: She will share her story of survival as part of an avant-garde jazz performance at the downtown Manhattan venue Joe’s Pub
For this iteration of Ampl!fy Voices, titled “Mir Zaynen Do,” (“We Are Here” in Yiddish), Marquès is working with a team of six Ashkenazi Jewish musicians who play piano, guitar, alto sax, bass and drums — plus Baran’s spoken word performance, in which she narrates her own testimony. The group released three music videos on YouTube; two feature mostly Baran’s spoken word over a mournful, almost discordant sound, while in the third
Baran and her two adult daughters sing “Mir Zaynen Do,” one of many titles for the Yiddish partisan song written in the Vilna Ghetto by poet Hirsch Glick in 1943
Sunday will be the first time that the musical collaboration will be performed live
but she’s looking forward to taking in the show — and amplifying her survival story
It’s entirely a different thing when you hear it
from the horse’s mouth,” Baran said in a Zoom interview
“You hear it when a person went through all those sarot [storms]
entirely different than you read it in the paper
Born in Oszmiana, Poland (now Belarus), a shtetl near Vilnius, Lithuania, Baran was a teenager when her father and uncles were murdered by Nazis in 1941
along with almost all the other adult Jewish men in the town
Her older sister was killed while they were trapped in the Oszmiana ghetto; eventually
after being shuffled through several concentration camps
she and her mother were liberated by the Soviets from Stutthoff concentration camp near Danzig (now Gdańsk) in the spring of 1945
Baran met her husband Mikhl in Łódź in 1946; he was also from Oszmiana
and had been a Soviet fighter who was among those who liberated the Majdanek concentration camp outside Lublin
Mikhl died at their home there in April 2020
He first heard Baran’s testimony at a Workers’ Circle Hebrew school event in December 2023
and was struck by the urgency of her testimony — that soon there would be no survivors left to tell the story of the Holocaust from firsthand experience
Marquès was inspired to incorporate Baran’s story into a musical project
there is a moment I think that the brain disconnects,” he said
You say this word in English that I really like
‘unspeakable.’ There is a moment that words
“helps the audience to create empathy with the person
but feeling it not from a political or ideological… it is a feeling.”
Screenshot from the ‘Mir Zaynen Do’ music video
Growing up, Marquès said he didn’t learn anything about what the Spanish did to the Jews of Catalonia, starting with the Spanish Inquisition, through the Holocaust, and all the way up to present-day antisemitism
Marquès said he didn’t even know Sephardic Jews existed.)
“Nobody taught me any of that ever in school or anywhere, while being exposed to the typical antisemitic tropes,” he said. But this new project, as well as an earlier one he recorded, titled “Sefarad” — a tribute to Jewish musical heritage in Spain — tell those untold stories of a people he used to know nothing about
The music of the “Mir Zaynen Do” project isn’t cheerful — but it doesn’t have the weight of the typical minor-key
big orchestra works with klezmer elements that are typical to the Holocaust music genre
but I think that this masterpiece by John Williams and the ‘Schindler’s List’ kind of defines so much [of] what people expect from the music of this topic that I had to go far away from that,” Marquès said
Sunday’s show will feature an “all-star lineup” of local jazz musicians
The collaboration “it’s not a history class
It’s not a book: It’s Millie,” Marquès said
I think I’m removing a lot of other inputs that we have in lots of different directions.”
“Albert Marquès and Ampl!fy Voices: We Are Here (Mir Zaynen Do) featuring Millie Baran” will be performed at Joe’s Pub (425 Lafayette St.) on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. For tickets, $30, and info, click here

2024) – North Texas SC has announced the signing of FC Dallas Academy forward Daniel Baran to an MLS NEXT Pro contract through the end of the season
signs with North Texas SC after making his professional debut on April 6 versus The Town FC
Baran has appeared 14 times for North Texas
playing 508 minutes and recording one assist
“Daniel is a really talented player with a ton of potential and a fantastic attitude,” said North Texas SC general manager Matt Denny
“We are excited to have him in our environment and look forward to playing a significant role in his development and future success.”
Baran joined the FC Dallas Academy system in September 2023
He participated in the Liga MX International 2023 and was a member of the team that finished second place in the 2024 Dallas Cup Gordon Jago Super Group Final
Baran has earned two call-ups to the Poland U-18 Youth National Team
longtime community advocate and policy-driven problem-solver running for Reno City Council
Having grown deep roots here over the last decade
I like to think that I know the needs of my district and have the integrity
curiosity and collaborative spirit it takes to explore and implement solutions that work for everyone
I’m driven to represent Ward 1 because the problems I see in our neighborhood (and in Reno at large) begin at a policy level and end in the community
often to the detriment of the working class which affects us all
In my advocacy work-turned-campaign for City Council
I’ve synthesized the concerns of Ward 1 residents and business owners into four categories — housing
climate and revitalizing downtown — making these issues the foundation of my platform
I have always been a renter and even experienced youth homelessness and living in my car for a period in town
I’ve seen the effects of violent ordinances that only exacerbate the problems and inequity
driving women and children to seek refuge at my doorstep while more of our fellow Renoites park outside my house because it is one of the only places they trust to feel safe
While knocking doors with volunteers I have visited countless homes of people with severe damage to their habitation
These residents openly recognize their landlords as slumlords but are afraid to report them because affordable housing does not exist here in Reno
and a summary eviction process unique to Nevada could put them out on the street at a moment's notice
Despite all these efforts, in comparison to the rest of the nation, we have spent a record amount of money on this issue — including very high salaries and palatial offices for a select few — and yet the number of deaths continue to rise
Considering these unignorable facts it seems like we are doing among the worst in the country on these issues
“Are we manufacturing a permanent homelessness crisis?”
when supposedly we still cannot afford to pay many first responders a living wage
From a public health and financial perspective
In my work with R.I.S.E (Reno Initiative for Shelter and Equality) we have seen similar
smaller model interventions benefit some populations
When we look at the issues affecting our most vulnerable residents across the board — from education to food insecurity to safety and climate — we find that they are all rooted in the foundational issues we face in the housing sector
It’s here that we find the intersection between public health and public safety
proving that you cannot have one without the other
Reimagining public safety asks us to examine the incompatibility between the problems facing the community and the government’s response to those problems
Trash and human waste along the river can be solved by access to trash cans and bathrooms
Deaths due to extreme temperature can be avoided by providing water fountains
Retail theft and petty crimes can be reduced by providing food security and advocating for living wages and wraparound services
Pedestrian and micromobility safety can be increased through illuminated crosswalks and walkable cities
A federal judge recently died after being hit by a car
and I personally know three other people who have been hit in crosswalks
Why aren’t we spending more time addressing a safe
walkable downtown instead of ticketing people experiencing homelessness
Especially when we are so fortunate as to have hoards of graduating professionals from the public health school who would love to be involved in addressing these and other public safety issues like mental health and allowing other first responders the chance to do work within their scope
Public safety and public health also require access to green spaces. Earth.org published an article from a study in Denmark which concludes, “that people living closer to green spaces have 55% less chance of having psychiatric disorders like stress, anxiety and substance abuse.” Wow
who knew something as easy as providing access to nature could have such positive results
Reno’s children are now growing up with less green space and more empty lots than ever before
in an effort to combat food insecurity and rising temperatures
I (in collaboration with community organizations
my landlord and countless others) started Hampton House Community Garden Project
because that’s how we take care of one another
I love a problem with multiple, untapped solutions, such as requirements for developers to sponsor parks and plant native flower seeds in empty lots during interim periods; cultivating living walls on structures; and a huge boost in public transit and micromobility expansion. I continue to advocate for the environment and am proud to be a part of passing AB 162 to protect our pollinators
I am also a beekeeper and believe we have so much room to go in the way of heat mitigation
My family moved to Nevada in the '80s to work with the Reno Musicians Union on maintaining the bustling live music epicenter and not letting greed turn every establishment to a dying relic with taped music
As an entertainer and member of the Reno Musicians Union myself
I would like to collaborate with the Culinary Workers Union
developers and casinos to develop a strategy that can quickly and effectively reshape downtown Reno into the thriving late-night mecca it used to be
Other cities like Seattle have had very positive results implementing the Fair Trade Music act which was a collaboration between artists and businesses to utilize high quality entertainment to draw in clientele
The American Federation of Musicians reports: “The music industry in Seattle is a vibrant and important part of the local economy
this study estimates that 16,607 people are directly employed in the music industry in Seattle
creating a total of $1.8 billion in direct economic output
The circulation of this economic output throughout the economy is indirectly responsible for another 14,053 jobs
Using established economic impact multipliers
this project estimates that the music industry in Seattle is responsible for more than $4.3 billion in total economic output and supports an astonishing 30,660 jobs
I know that we like always doing it the “Nevada Way,” but as we stand to be a model for other cities
we can stand to be inspired by what is already working elsewhere
We must not be afraid to use a broad brush to paint the picture we want to see downtown
As someone who is often a patron or a performer
getting off of work downtown leaves me with very few
With the proper incentives we can make downtown a place folks can flock to after a night in Midtown or seeing a show in Ward 1
A place that caters to and works for everyone
These are just some of my plans to tackle the problems I am hearing from a diverse bouquet of residents
It’s clear that electing a City Council representative with boots on the ground experience
legislative perspective and the expertise in implementing bipartisan measures would help so many Renoites
We need someone ready to get to work on day one
Someone with a specific set of knowledge around local and statewide policy
Someone connected to the city and ready to serve a full term without draining our resources or being owned by special interests
I’m excited to be a candidate who has over 300 donations from individuals only
that I have inspired hope in Ward 1 residents who often feel excluded from the right to shape our city to meet our collective needs
A vote for me is a vote for all the people of Reno and Ward 1

Riverhead is now 9-0 on the season and haven’t lost a league match since 2021.
which was three shots under par at Cherry Links in Riverhead on Monday
It was the second time he reached that low during the season
He has averaged a score of 36.5 for nine holes of play during his junior campaign.
“I still feel like I have ways to cut my score down even lower,” Baran said
“I’m super happy with how I have been playing but I definitely left some shots out there.”
the Blue Waves cruised through the conference championship and earned the No
It wasn’t until they met Ward Melville in the semi-finals that they finally got a loss on their resume and that was simply because of team stroke play
The Patriots earned three medal points because they as a team had less strokes than the Blue Waves even though the rest of the head to heads were split right down the middle
“Golf is the only sport that doesn’t separate into classes,” Failla said last year
“Other sports get four divisions and six classes
Golf has one champion and that’s why it’s the hardest sport to win it all.”
Riverhead has made it to the final four twice in its history
once in 2019 and the second time last year
They’re looking to get right back in the mix this season
The conference championships are scheduled for Oct
which will determine the seeds for the Suffolk County tournament
Max Gajowski and Brady Hubbard as their starting six for most of the season
Any of them are capable of putting together a strong round and earning the team a point
has averaged a score of 40 during the season
“Our lineups have looked very similar the last three years because they all came up to varsity as sophomores,” Failla said
This was going to be a big test of the program
It’s going to be hard to replicate the success we’ve had the last few years because these guys are brand new to the varsity team but they haven’t missed a beat.”
A lot of that has to do with Baran’s ability to lead
The players feed off of him and try to improve their game alongside him
They see how hard he works and golf is a game that requires constant repetition
“In the years past Baran was always the best golfer but he was the youngest on the team,” Failla said
“The seniors pushed him last year but this year he’s taken on more of a leadership role
Baran was the second player to make it to the individual New York State championships in Riverhead’s history
He’s looking to take it a step further this year
“I think we have all the tools to be successful as a team this year,” Baran said
“My first goal this year is to win Riverhead’s first team championship
The individual stuff is great but we’re a team first and hopefully a few shots fall our way this year.”
Riverhead went down to Spring Lake Golf Club in Middle Island this weekend to get a feel for the course they’ll be playing in the championships.
But they know these are the steps that you need to do
You need to constantly get ahead and play as much as you can
Familiarizing yourself with the championship golf course is only going to help when it’s time to shine.”
There were many tearful hugs among the approximately 100 family members
firefighters and EMTs who gathered Saturday at the..

The Rutgers women's soccer team defeated Nebraska 3-2 Thursday night at Yurcak Field on Busch campus
After trailing in the first half of the match
5-0-2) regained the lead in the second half to earn the victory
with both teams scoring during the opening minutes
Assisted by senior forward Gia Girman, sophomore forward Ashley Baran put her shot into the back of the net to give the Knights a 1-0 lead
This wouldn't be the only goal for Baran
as she would go on to score every goal for Rutgers in the contest
Following the Knights' goal, the Cornhuskers (4-8-1, 1-5-1) responded with back-to-back scores to give them the lead over the Knights. Less than a minute after Rutgers scored, Sarah Weber snuck the ball into the net to tie the score
Weber found an opening near the net again and launched her offering into the bottom right corner
the game remained scoreless for the rest of the half
despite several attempts by the Knights to equalize
Rutgers came into the second half of the game prepared to mount a comeback against Nebraska
Baran would be the offensive player to change the course of the game
Approximately 3 minutes separated Baran's 2nd and 3rd goals
Baran struck an unassisted goal into the top of the net to even the score at 2-2
Baran would make an impact once again in the game's 53rd minute
who aimed her shot to the top of the net — seemingly her spot during the whole match
The Knights would take the 3-2 lead and keep it for the remainder of the game, as Baran's first career hat trick gave Rutgers its ninth win of the season. It was also the team's first hat trick since August 2022, when former striker Allison Lowrey scored 3 in a 7-0 rout against FDU
"It was a must-win game," Baran said
and we know we needed to get a win out of this."
Without senior forward Riley Tiernan in the lineup
Baran said it was a team effort to fill in for the star player
"I think it was a team effort to step up and cover where she was missing tonight."
as the Knights defense stayed on top of the ball
Rutgers won its fifth Big Ten game of the year
maintaining its perfect record in conference play while remaining unbeaten in its last 10 matches
the Knights will remain at home and play against Iowa
"We felt that we needed to set another standard in the second half and come out and be who we are," said head coach Mike O’Neill
"There's an understanding of the way we wanna play but within that
Getting your eyes up and seeing the game and believing in being brave to play the game
that's what they did in the second half."
