As the Hun School softball team headed into the spring
it was facing a major challenge as it looked to fill the void left by the graduation of stars and program stalwarts Lexi Kobryn and Jamie Staub
produced a record-breaking career for the Raiders as a pitcher and a hitter with 638 strikeouts and a 0.41 ERA and a batting average of .537 with 123 hits ands 119 RBIs while Staub
also starred in the circle and at the bat as she had 134 strikeouts and a 0.40 ERA and batted .427 with 88 hits and 61 RBIs
Longtime Hun School head coach Kathy Quirk
who guided the Raiders to an 18-3 record and the Prep A state final in 2024
is looking for senior and Haverford College commit Anna Murphy to excel in the circle
who will also be giving innings to senior Kailey Jacobs and freshman Payton Poandl
“We are looking forward for her to step it up
She has good movement on the ball and her speed is pretty good.”
Quirk saw some good things on team’s recent trip to Florida over spring break
“We hit the ball well in Florida which was surprising,” said Quirk
whose team opened its 2025 season by edging Lawrenceville 7-6 last Thursday
Junior star and Sacred Heart University commit Sam Jolly (.524 batting average with 33 hits in 2024) will be the table setter for the Hun batting attack
“She will lead off like she did last year,” said Quirk of Jolly who went 3 for 3 with one run and one RBI in the win over Lawrenceville
“She is a hardworking young lady and does a nice job for us at second base
The Raiders should get some hitting punch from junior Rowan Lacy (.433
“Rowan will probably bat second for us like she did last year,” said Quirk
Eisenberg batted third and Murphy batted fourth
We are looking for some big things from the two of them.”
Quirk believes that freshmen Poandl and Quinn Schweer can also contribute with the bat
“Payton has got a pretty strong bat,” said Quirk
The Raiders feature a battle-tested infield with Eisenberg back at catcher
and slick fielding senior Brianna Riviello at third
“I feel pretty confident with my infield,” said Quirk
who is moving Lacy to first base from the outfield
we are still trying to figure out our starters,” said Quirk
who is looking at senior Sophia Troiano and junior Natalia Landamia in the outfield along with a quartet of freshmen in Claudia Price
In order to maintain the program’s winning ways
our defense is going to see the ball a lot more than they have the past couple of years,” said Quirk
whose team hosts the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy (Pa.) on April 3 and the Pingry School on April 4 before playing at South Hunterdon in April 5 and at Villa Joseph Marie High (Pa.) on April 7

Game Recap: Softball | 2/21/2025 5:30:00 PM
– Villanova softball went the distance on Friday afternoon at McWhorter Stadium
falling 1-0 to Clemson in VU's first extra-inning affair of 2025 to kick off a four-game stay at the Clemson Classic
Lexi Kobryn shoved in the circle once again for Villanova (5-5)
tossing her third straight seven-inning shutout before receiving the loss in extras on an unearned run
The first-year struck out one in a complete game effort
facing 30 batters with 20 in-play outs on the afternoon
the Wildcats were frequently on base as they started out the game on six straight innings with a runner aboard
the first five including one in scoring position
Maddie Burrows reached base each time at the plate in her first start of the season, walking twice and singling once. Maranda Runco and Brooklyn Ostrowski got the team's only two other hits
both getting aboard twice on a single and a base on balls
The Wildcats got a pair of runners aboard in the opening frame thanks to back-to-back walks
but couldn't advance anyone beyond second base
Kobryn caught a break right away as a leadoff single was called back due to a batter stepping out of the box
then worked out of a two-out double for a scoreless first
It was another pair of bases on balls in the ensuing frame for a two-out runner in scoring position
though a strikeout ended the chance for VU to be the first on the board
Runco laced a single off the pitcher and Ostrowski sent one up the middle in the third
Burrows singled to begin the fourth and moved up to second on VU's second sacrifice bunt of the season and game
The Tigers' lineup created the most dangerous situation of the afternoon to that point with a pair of leadoff singles putting two aboard in the fifth
inducing outs from each of Clemson's top three power hitters to remain scoreless
Burrows reached on a walk in the sixth but couldn't score
then a 1-2-3 seventh for the Villanova lineup put the onus on Kobryn to extend the contest
stranding a one-out single and getting a two-out flyout to give the fans some free softball
so a runner was placed on second to begin each team's extra-inning hacks
The Wildcats put three balls in play and got their runner to third
using a leadoff single to walk it off in the eighth and escape with a 1-0 victory

– Villanova softball picked up its first top 25 victory of the season on Friday
25 Florida Atlantic Owls to draw a split in the team's opening day at the Joan Joyce Classic
Game Recap: Softball | 2/14/2025 5:20:00 PM
Villanova (3-4) fell to Louisville 5-1 in the tournament's opener at 9:00 a.m.
then took down the event's host in a 1-0 pitchers' duel to finish the day
Ava Franz and Elizabeth Gray were the catalysts of the Villanova offense in the first game
each totaling two hits against the Cardinals
Franz reached base three times on a single
walk and solo homer while Gray singled twice in the matchup
Kat Gallant went all six innings in the circle for the Wildcats
tying her season high in strikeouts with four while inducing 12 batted-ball outs
The Cardinals put a five-spot on the board to start out the game
a single and three doubles to secure an early 5-0 lead
Villanova threatened in the third on an Elaina Wagner single before Gray beat out a bunt
but the 'Cats couldn't get any runs back in that frame
Franz changed those fortunes in the next stanza
belting a solo shot out to right-center for her first bomb of the year to lessen the deficit
retiring 11 batters in a row to close the contest
but the offense wasn't able to capitalize on any more opportunities in a 5-1 loss
Lexi Kobryn was dominant in the circle
tossing a complete game shutout with four strikeouts and just six baserunners allowed en route to the second win of her freshman campaign
Alexa Raphael notched two hits and scored the game's lone run while Grace Reed doubled and Franz added VU's only other base knock against the Owls
both pitchers had to work out of trouble in the second as Reed led it off with a double but couldn't score
then Kobryn got out of a bases-loaded jam to keep it at zero
The Wildcats added to the board right after, stringing together a Raphael single, Kelsey White walk and Franz base knock before Jaclyn Morra put the ball in play and forced an error
The freshman right-hander Kobryn worked around baserunners in the third and fifth
and it all came down to her in the seventh as FAU loaded up the bases with two down
inducing a popout to deliver her side a 1-0 ranked victory

– Villanova softball emerged victorious in a pitcher's duel at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy on Sunday
sweeping a second straight BIG EAST series with a 4-2 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas
Lexi Kobryn and Kat Gallant were the stars of the game for Villanova (15-14
each allowing just one run in the ballgame while splitting the pitching duties
Kobryn received the win as the starter with four strikeouts on her ledger as Gallant earned her second save of the year with three frames of five-strikeout
The Wildcats threatened right away by loading up the bases in the first on a trio of free passes
Villanova put leadoff runners aboard in each of the second and third as well
though nobody could get to the plate and break the tie in those frames
Georgetown got the game's first hit with two outs in the second on a double into right center
but Kobryn kept the runner there for a scoreless game
The Hoyas generated a dangerous chance in the fourth with a hit-by-pitch and single putting two on the basepaths
inducing a groundout and flyout to keep GU off the board
The third time through the order was the charm for the Wildcats as Wagner started a rally by poking a ball down the third base line for a one-out threat
Runco lined a single through the right side to put runners on the corners before Franz grounded one to third to score Wagner
Ostrowski and Burrows each followed with laced singles into right field to get a teammate home
then Ostrowski dashed home on a wild pitch for a 4-0 edge in the fifth
Georgetown answered right away with a trio of leadoff hits to score one
but Gallant entered in relief and got three straight outs to minimize the damage to one
The Hoyas struck again with two outs in the sixth
taking advantage of a leadoff walk and two-out single for a 4-2 ballgame
Gallant took the circle again for the bottom of the seventh and delivered for the Wildcats
generating two strikeouts and a groundout to guarantee a plus-.500 record for her squad

PERFECT DAY: Hun School softball player Lexi Kobryn
celebrates after scoring a run in a 2022 game
Last Wednesday against the Hill School (Pa.)
junior star Kobryn produced a brilliant performance in a 12-0 victory
pitching a perfect game with 14 strikeouts in a contest that ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule
also hit a two-run homer in the win which improved Hun to 5-0
the Raiders are slated to host Hamilton West on April 15 and the Pingry School on April 17
chilly afternoon last Wednesday with temperatures hovering in the high 40s as the Hun School softball team hosted the Hill School (Pa.)
But Hun junior star pitcher Lexi Kobryn was undeterred by the nippy conditions
it was a little cold but I had my Under Armour on,” said Kobryn with a smile
The talented right-hander proceeded to bring a lot of heat from the circle
striking out 14 of 15 batters she faced with nobody reaching first base
hurling a perfect game as Hun defeated Hill 12-0 in a game that ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule
“Everything was really working,” said Kobryn
whose brilliant effort helped Hun improve to 5-0
Kobryn has worked hard to improve her pitching
“I have increased my speed a lot; I go to the gym every day
who also played for the New Jersey Intensity travel team
I have definitely increased that from last year.”
smacking a two-run homer over the center field fence in the first inning
“That was my first homer of the year,” said Kobryn
“This pitcher was a little faster than the ones we faced in the last couple of games so I just made sure that I had my timing down from the beginning.”
Kobryn’s desire to improve also includes daily work on her hitting
I do a lot of hitting off the tee almost every day,” said Kobryn who went 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBIs in the win
Kobryn’s pitching and hitting prowess had resulted in her committing to attend Villanova and play for its Division I softball program
“It was a really exciting September 1st for me,” said Kobryn
“I had a really successful summer with my travel team
While Hun has dominated most of its foes so far this spring
it was a five-run seventh inning rally in a 10-6 win over Lawrenceville on March 30 that best reflected its competitive fire
“They have always been our rival and we just found something in us that got us fired up in that game,” said Kobryn
Hun head coach Kathy Quirk was excited by Kobryn’s pitching effort against Hill
but not as well as she did today,” said Quirk
“Today was her best outing — she is throwing with confidence
I was nervous because she threw yesterday and I wasn’t sure how it was going to go
you have to tell me because I am not going to play around.”
Seeing Kobryn do well with the bat was a plus
“I think it was a big something off of her shoulders too.”
Quirk got good hitting throughout the lineup from her squad against Hill as it pounded out 15 hits with Sam Jolly
and Anna Murphy each getting two hits in addition to Kobryn
we just hit the ball; yesterday we struggled (in a win over Peddie) and we couldn’t hit the slow pitching,” said Quirk
We have the target on our backs and everyone is after us
She will draw the walk and she will hit the ball
With the Raiders slated to host Hamilton West on April 15 and the Pingry School on April 17
Quirk likes how her team is coming through so far this spring
“I am pleased with what we are doing; it is hard to say that we are playing excellent defense because they are not hitting the ball off of Lexi,” said Quirk
“They know what they have to do and I think they are confident with each other
With Hun coming off an 18-1 season in 2022 that saw it win the Prep A state title
Kobryn believes this year’s squad has the talent and chemistry to match that excellence
“I definitely think we can build on last year,” said Kobryn
I think we really set the tone for what our capabilities are for the year.”
WORCESTER – It can be really hard to project the outcome of a game between a team that has nothing to lose and one that has everything to lose.
Such was the case Saturday night in the match here between the Railers and the Adirondack Thunder. Worcester won by a goal, of course, 3-2. Each of the Railers’ last seven victories have been by one goal including a shootout triumph.
Adirondack is out of the playoff race and using many new faces. The Railers’ battle for the final playoff spot in the North Division leaves them no margin for error.
The math is simple even if the task is not. The Railers have three games left, one with Adirondack Sunday and two at Reading next weekend. If they win them all, they make the playoffs with 80 points.
Saturday, the Worcester scorers were Justin Gill, Tanner Schachle and Tyler Kobryn. Ian Pierce and Kaleb Ergang had the Adirondack goals. It was Pierce’s first professional goal.
Gill scored in the first period, Schachle in the second and Kobryn in the third. At one point the Railers had a 2-0 lead, then backslid in the second half of the second period. Ergang scored with 10 seconds to go in the period and it was 2-2 heading into the third.
Kobryn broke the tie with a shot from between the circles at 14:37.
It was his ninth goal in 23 games with Worcester. Kobryn had two in 18 games with Florida this year before being traded to the Railers and 16 in 145 career ECHL games prior to his arrival here.
“Any time you get that kind of production out of a player who was kind of a ‘nothing’ trade,” coach Nick Tuzzolino said, “that definitely helps, but everybody has to fit a role and he fits his role with that line.
“And when he gets chances he doesn’t miss.”
Gill, in contrast, has been a difference maker on offense. He is 7-13-20 in 20 games with Worcester this season and plus-11. The Railers are 12-6-2 when Gill is in the lineup.
Schachle’s goal was his first in a Worcester uniform to go along with three assists.
The Railers were in control of things until they went on a power play halfway through the second period. The power play was, in a word, inept. Momentum turned in Adirondack’s direction and the Thunder dominated the rest of the period.
“It’s not anything they did, it’s something we did,” Tuzzolino said of the power play. “It’s self-inflicted. The biggest problem with our power play right now is that it’s killing momentum. It’s not just that we’re not scoring, it’s killing momentum.”
Michael Bullion continued to be a momentum creator in net, though. He stopped 22 of 24 shots and is 7-1 in his last eight starts.
Worcester’s playoff push is largely a result of a recent great record at the DCU Center. The Railers did not play well at home during the early part of the season but are 14-3-2 in its last 19 games here. That is good for a .789 winning percentage.
Overall, Worcester is 24-13-3 in its last 40 games.
The victory was the Railers’ 34th of the season and brought them to 74 points. They will finish above .500 for the first time 2018-19, their second season in the ECHL. Worcester was 32-29-11 for 75 points that year.
MAKING TRACKS – The Fan Appreciation crowd was 5,070. The Railers are averaging a nifty 4,465 in their last 19 games at the DCU Center. … The three goal scorers were the three stars. With three games left in the season, it looks like Anthony Callin will be this year’s Stars leader. He has 44 points with Anthony Repaci second with 37 points. … The season series and weekend conclude at 3:05 Sunday afternoon with the two teams playing again.

The study looks to understand the psychology behind sexually violent behaviors by researching intimate relationships and examining the reasoning behind men’s ability to successfully comprehend or disregard a lack of consent
By Victoria Stargiotti - December 7
To aid in the effort to combat sexual violence
the Center for Transdisciplinary Research on Intimate Relationships has been studying the relationship between men’s emotional regulation and the degree to which they perceive consent
an associate professor in Binghamton University’s psychology department
focuses on men’s consideration of empathy when making sexual decisions
a fifth-year Ph.D candidate studying clinical psychology and the perpetration of sexual violence and its emotional predictors
Shaw explained that the goal of the study was to discover more effective modes of sexual assault intervention by understanding the psychology behind sexually violent behaviors
The lab began by researching intimate relationships
shifting focus behind the “#MeToo” movement to observe how people perceive consent for sexual activity
It also examines the reasoning behind men’s ability to either successfully comprehend or disregard a lack of consent
for certain types of men … the research calls it hostile masculinity and it’s describing a group of men who really subscribe to aggressive ideologies about gender roles
that have specific beliefs about how men should emotionally feel [and] how they should conduct themselves,” Shaw said
“Those are the people who never really get the chance to learn how to regulate their emotions because they’re so focused on kind of pushing them away and not accepting them
It’s that same kind of emotional avoidance that ultimately leads itself as a risk factor for kind of impulsive behavior and if you put those same men into sexual scenarios
what our lab has shown over the last few years is that they are more likely to engage in aggressive behavior.”
Subjects are presented with imagined scenarios where consent may be ambiguous and a transcranial direct current stimulation — a cap with sponges — applies small bolts of direct electricity to the brain
They are then tested with similar scenarios to see if they have advanced emotion regulation by seeing how they would reach in those situations
“It’s a pretty interesting thing that I don’t think anybody here at [BU] has done before
The lab is funded through the American Psychological Foundation Trust Grant
the Harpur Dean’s Graduate Investment Initiative Fund and the BU Dissertation Year Fellowship Award
Researchers and their assistants are able to share their findings at conferences and poster presentations
They are continuing research through the spring semester and intend to apply their findings toward sexual assault training
“Some of those [sexual assault] trainings don’t have any research basis behind them,” Shaw said
“They’re just kind of put together to satisfy a school need and some of them appear to be making the men who are most at risk of engaging in engaging in sexual assault worse.”
Kobryn described her interest in contributing to the lab’s research
“The research that we do in this lab is really important and especially relatable to the environment that we’re in because sexual assault and problems with consent are often problems that we see happen on college campuses,” Kobryn said
“Diving deep into why this happens [when] we have a population right at our fingertips to get information from and to pull data from is pretty cool.”
Sexual assault continues to be a leading issue on college campuses throughout the United States
According to the Biennial SUNY Uniform Campus Climate Survey sent out in 2023
13 percent of male students and 58 percent of gender non-binary students reported being victims of sexual harassment the prior year
13 percent of male students and 43 percent of gender non-binary students reported that they were subject to sexual assault the year prior
“Some people are actively trespassing against other people’s boundaries
and we don’t have a clear understanding of what the right kind of intervention [is] for them,” Shaw said
one of our goals is to figure out what that is and then start to shape up that kind of intervention.”

The competition has started off with surprises
with all the teams giving their best to reach the London 2012 Olympics
One team that won’t be there is the big favorite
After losing to Croatia in the last game of the second phase
the Spanish side (where Sancho Lyttle has left a lot to be desired…) is living one of the worst basketball moments of these last years
But we’ll analyze that in another article
For now, all the American attention has turned to Ewelina Kobryn, after the Seattle Storm signed her to help out after the loss of center Lauren Jackson, reportedly out 12 weeks due to injury. Seattle had already shown interest in Kobryn during the preseason, but, as she told to the Polish website pracuj.pl
"they wouldn’t let me play Eurobasket and I couldn’t accept that"
Kobryn was able to play Eurobasket in her own country and will have now a place on the roster of the defending WNBA champions
Kobryn was the mainstay of the Polish game in Eurobasket
She led the team in points (14.7 ppg) and rebounds (7.7 rpg)
while recording the team's most minutes on court
One of her most prominent assets is her physical power
and her ability to use her body to have an impact on her adversaries
She is a strong defender and could impose an insurmountable front in the paint
Kobryn has some difficulties attacking the basket
as she lacks the pace and mobility to be a major player in WNBA
When she did manage get to the line at Eurobasket
Her effectiveness when fouled could give her another opportunity to add points and prompt the opposition to attempt to avoid giving Kobryn free throw tries
Seven players representing six countries were born in the United States
We check their stats:PG Laine Selwyn (Israel) – 24 mpg
4 rpg SG Anna De Forge (Montenegro) – 37 mpg
4 rpgPF Kim Butler (Great Britain) – 26 mpg
6.3 rpgC Nevin Nevlin (Turkey) – 19 mpg
4 rpgLisa Karcic (Croatia) and Jennifer Fleischer (Israel) had little minutes in their teams rotations

POWER SOURCE: Hun School softball player Lexi Kobryn smacks the ball in a game last season
Junior Kobryn enjoyed a huge sophomore campaign last spring
hitting .500 with team highs in homers (7)
and runs (30) in addition to being the team’s pitching ace with six no-hitters and 190 strikeouts in 87 innings
Kobryn’s heroics helped Hun go 18-1 and win its first Prep A state title since 2017
the Raiders started their 2023 campaign by sweeping a doubleheader from Mercersburg Academy (Pa.) last Sunday
Hun will be playing at the Lawrenceville School on March 30
There is a target on the back of the Hun School softball team as it comes into its 2023 campaign
Having rolled to an 18-1 record last spring and winning its first Prep A state title since 2017
Kathy Quirk warned her players that they will be getting the best efforts of their foes this spring
every team is going to be out to get you,” said head coach Quirk
who is entering her 48th season at the helm of the program
for their annual preseason trip and some bonding
“It was a great experience that way; the girls had a lot of time together
“It is one of these places where you are stuck on a compound where we do everything together.”
Junior star Lexi Kobryn will be looking to build on the great season in the circle last spring when she hurled six no-hitters and had 190 strikeouts in 87 innings
she is very happy and excited so I am hoping she can just have some fun,” said Quirk
starting its 2023 campaign by sweeping a doubleheader from Mercersburg Academy (Pa.) last Sunday
“I think she has gotten better and more confident with herself on the mound
The Raiders feature pitching depth with junior Jamie Staub and sophomore Anna Murphy
“Anna will see some time when the opportunity arises.”
Kobryn provides punch in the middle of the Hun batting order
having hit .500 with team highs in homers (7)
her hitting has also improved,” added Quirk
Hun should have good hitting throughout the order as freshman Sam Jolly
“We brought in a slapper this year in Sam Jolly
we are hoping that she may bat first,” said Quirk
“Kat will be batting second — she committed to Colby so she is going to play softball after Hun
Anna did a nice job with the bat last year
the Raiders have players who can get the job done
“Emma will probably be our starting catcher; it is between her and Kailey Jacobs
“At first will be Jamie when Lexi is pitching and vice versa
who is a first baseman and did a nice job at spring break
At second we have Sam Jolly to fill in that spot
we took Sammy Kandel out of left field and put her in at shortstop
The Raiders are pretty set in the outfield
As the Raiders aim for another championship campaign
Quirk believes the keys to success will be a maintaining a positive mindset and taking care of the fundamentals
“I think we have to play with confidence,” said Quirk
whose team will be playing at the Lawrenceville School on March 30

The event was moderated by Nazar Danchyshyn
The museum worker met students from Brazil
Germany and Serbia in the house of opera singer Solomiya Krushelnytska with the interior of the early twentieth century
Here Mykhailo Kobryn conducted a virtual tour of the exhibition rooms and told interesting facts from the life of the diva
Students saw a piano played by Solomiya Krushelnytska and composer Myroslav Skoryk
and recreated theatre costumes of the artist
The atmosphere of the house with its exhibits and the story of Mykhailo Kobryn revealed to the members of the Discussion Club Solomiya Krushelnytska as a woman of progressive views
who decided to get married at a very late age – 38
loved to play roulette and was the first Ukrainian to drive a car
the opera diva was an actress who from a noble woman transformed into a fragile Japanese woman on stage and gave new life and triumph to seemingly failed operas
as was the case with Giacomo Puccini’s Madame Butterfly

"Amusing to think I went from shitposting at home and now I'm shitposting in parliament
Mr Newton's arrival in Canberra has not gone unnoticed
Mr Newton is seen just behind Greens senators Larissa Waters and Mehreen Faruqi during a recent debate in the Senate chamber over whether to censure Senator Anning for his comments linking the Christchurch massacre to Muslim migration
a photo of the two senators appeared on an alt-right Facebook page called Abhorrent Australian Memes Did Nothing Wrong
Greens Senator Larissa Waters said the person who took this image should have their parliamentary pass revoked
It appears the photo was taken exactly where Mr Newton had been sitting
although he maintains he has no knowledge of the image
The office enforcing the rules of the Senate said the photo amounted to a potential breach of the rules
"We will continue to make enquiries in relation to this issue and take action as appropriate," a spokesperson said
If it is established that a member of Senator Anning's staff took the photo
Senator Waters said she hoped their parliamentary pass would be revoked
"There are clear rules about photography on the floor of the chamber and it appears those rules have been blatantly breached with the aim of disseminating the photo on social media as another way to spread the alt-right's message of hatred and division which Fraser Anning is now well known for," she said
said the fact Mr Newton and Mr Kobryn-Coletti are employed by Senator Anning is proof of a concrete connection between his office and the alt-right
"If I were Andrew Wilson or one of his comrades
Mr Fleming said the alt-right has been looking for a political home for years and the movement can gain power through Senator Anning
He said it was Senator Anning's controversial "final solution" maiden speech that put him on the radar of white supremacists in Australia.
Richard Howard, the man who reportedly wrote the speech, is accused of being fascinated with Nazi Germany.
He denies being the author and is currently on leave from the Federal Department of Home Affairs.
Regardless of who wrote the speech, a burgeoning alt-right media scene began spruiking Senator Anning online.
"I think it's a mutually beneficial arrangement," Mr Fleming said.
"The alt-right activists look to Anning for inspiration and for resources.
"Anning is seeking to establish a political base not only in Queensland but across the country."
Senator Anning's election to Parliament was an accident of history unlikely to be repeated.
Should he fail to retain his position in the upper house, Mr Fleming warns the alt-right will find another target.
"These individuals don't just disappear, they carry on and reappear somewhere else," he said.
"They look for moments and opportunities across the board and will utilize them in a collective fashion whenever they think they can essentially get away with it."

The latest campaign from the Canada Protection Plan (CPP) is shifting the organization’s marketing to encompass a wider segment of the country
The life insurance agency’s new approach to advertising is rare for the space
It’s focusing more on everyday enjoyment in life
whereas the CPP’s AVP of marketing Julie Kobryn notes that life insurance marketing can often focus more on loss and legacy
those are all the mournful feelings that go along with life insurance
[But] people are enjoying longer healthier lives
how do we provide them with the tools to enhance that?” Kobryn tells strategy
The campaign underscores how life insurance can often be something that families don’t think to spend on
It’s not seen as being as essential of a spend for many families as more pressing needs like food
and often takes a backseat for other more enjoyable everyday expenditures in family budgets
The CPP wanted to craft a campaign that could highlight the ease with which one can apply for life insurance
making it seem less complex and difficult to understand
and as something that’s useful and valuable by touching on member benefits and rewards available through the CPP for active living and giving back to your community
The challenge that the CPP is working against is that almost half of Canadians don’t have life insurance or are dependent on life insurance through their work
while the agency notes that its own research shows more than 80% of Canadians think life insurance is too expensive
“Nobody wants to talk about their own end
The fact is they think it’s costly so they deprioritize it.” Kobryn says
your rates are often quite low and it probably doesn’t make a huge dent in your budget.”
The CPP’s new strategy also represents a shift in the target audience of its advertising
the CPP has advertised mostly towards people who are harder to insure due to their lifestyle or health
with its target audience middle-aged Canadians with families
with materials also being pulled together to support it online and on social media
Fuse is the main creative lead on the campaign
