Veterans This extraordinary unwavering commitment is an inspiration.   Lida had a 25-year career working with homeless area shelters in the Twin Cities A good friend of hers was an Air Force Veteran who was diagnosed with cancer and was cared for at the Minneapolis VA and time spent at the VA watching the exemplary care her friend received was the reason Lida decided to volunteer.   With her warm smile and gentle touch she has made it her mission to bring comfort and care to those who have sacrificed so much for our nation Lida has become a cherished friend to many Veterans who have come to rely on her expertise and genuine affection Lida's ability to connect with the residents goes beyond providing a simple haircut; it's a chance to brighten their day and remind them that they are appreciated and valued She weaves magic through her conversations sharing stories and offering encouragement as she meticulously tends to each individual's needs Her kind nature and patience ensure that each person in her chair receives care they deserve.  Lida remained steadfast to serving our Veterans demonstrating her passion and determination to make a difference in the lives of others.   To express gratitude for her exceptional service the Center for Development and Civic Engagement with the support of generous donors benefiting Veterans at the VA recently purchased a brand-new barber chair to spruce up Lida’s barber service This new addition will not only make her job easier but will also offer comfort to the inpatient Veterans during their appointments.    Lida has become an essential part of our community and her remarkable spirit continues to inspire We thank Lida for her infectious smile and her service to those who have served our country Her story is a testament to the power of compassion and we are honored to have her as a member of our VA Health Care System family.  2022: Named a second team All-America by the NFHCA … first team All-Conference … led team in professional dance later known as the American Ballet Theatre She also performed in numerous Broadway musicals including Pal Joey and Pajama Game as well as on television with the June Taylor Dancers NJ for 12 years and then moved to Pleasantville Lida opened schools of ballet for children both while living in Toms River and then in Pleasantville She was also one of the first Lamaze (natural childbirth) instructors in the country Lida made a decision to enroll in college in her forties earning a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts she was granted credits for several of her past endeavors and accomplishments Lida began to focus seriously on developing her natural athleticism in her late forties She won gold medals in several triathlons and then turned her attention to training as a Masters swimmer Lida competed in numerous local and national meets until the age of 79 it was a rare occasion when she won anything less than gold Lida’s involvement in swimming began to wane in her late seventies due to the gradual development of difficulties with coordination and cognition She was formally diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia with Parkinsonism at the age of 80 Lida combatted this cruel disease for 14 years passing away in her home on 7/8/2024 at the age of 92 Lida was often described as “an angel without wings.” She was adored by all who knew her and will be greatly missed her father in South Africa in 1997 She ultimately found it in horses in the United States where she can always proudly say that she foaled star filly Thorpedo Anna.Fannin was 12 years old when she heard the chilling sound of shots fired She immediately ran to check on her father Her worst fears were realized.Twenty-nine years later she struggles to discuss such a senseless loss of life The only thing taken was the life of a hard-working family man.“I don’t really talk about it I found him and I told my mom what happened,” she said ‘Keep going.’"Others might shout to the heavens and cry out “Why?” Fannin realized there is no value in that “I think it’s just life,” she said “Life throws you these curveballs.” She was 18 when she left behind family and friends and her beloved horse Eager to see more of the world and broaden her knowledge of horses she ventured to the United States in 2006.That move was rewarded beyond anything she could have imagined she focused on the challenges of raising a family But the need to be around horses remained strong and she found work at breeder Judy Hicks’ Brookstown Farm near Versailles She serves as night-watch person during foaling season and helps prep yearlings for sales the remaining six months of the year.“She came out and fell in love with the farm immediately,” Hicks said “She’s one of those people that she doesn’t want to leave.”Hicks asked Fannin to come in earlier than her usual 10 p.m 28 of that year because she sensed that Sataves an Uncle Mo mare that had been sent to inexpensive stallion Fast Anna Hicks wanted to be sure she was well prepared Thorpedo Anna on the night she was foaled on Jan “I’ve always done it myself,” she said I don’t feel comfortable being completely alone doing it.”Hicks was correct in anticipating Sataves’ readiness to deliver Fannin quickly bonded with the dark bay foal that would be Thorpedo Anna.“She foaled her and I found her in the stall laying down with her head in her lap,” Hicks said of Fannin “She could do that with a lot of them.”Fannin said her work makes her feel “warm and fuzzy inside.” She delights in each new arrival.“Every time one is born “Watching them breathe for the first time helping them with the mare to start nursing they’re spunky and running around like little racehorses in the stall Not even two days ago you were still inside her tummy.”Little Thorpedo Anna soon made it clear she would tolerate only so much of Fannin’s affection independent nature became evident early on she will turn her backside to you,” Fannin said ‘I’m done.’“Thorpedo Anna soon asserted herself as leader of the pack She loved rolling in a muddy patch on the farm and would lead other foals there to do the same.As Hicks and Fannin reveled at seeing Thorpedo Anna frolic in the mud nothing suggested she would emerge as winner of the Kentucky Oaks and three other Grade 1 races this season as a 3-year-old narrowly miss beating the boys in the Travers 2 Breeders’ Cup Distaff as a prime contender.“I didn’t take too many photos of her because we didn’t think she would amount to this,” Fannin said “She was just a big horse in a field You didn’t think anything of it.”Fannin prepped Thorpedo Anna for the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale where trainer Kenny McPeek purchased her for the unremarkable sum of $40,000 Hicks thought enough of her filly to ask to stay in She became part an ownership group that turned into Brookdale Racing Mark Edwards and Sherri McPeek’s Magdalena Racing Lida with husband Webster and their three children has rewarded Hicks’ faith by earning more than $2.8 million The breeder knows she has another winner in Fannin.“She just adds a dimension,” Hicks said “She’s very good about doing all my vaccinations and taking the temperature of every foal and paying close attention to detail.”Fannin said she feels “like a really proud auntie” whenever Thorpedo Anna runs the filly has taken her to unimagined heights and places far removed from one nightmarish day in South Africa helps lead Thorpedo Anna into the winner's circle after the filly dominated the G1 Acorn 2022 recipient of the Walter Haight Award from the be feeling the urge to find a new furry friend to add to your home; maybe you want a new puppy or kitten to love and nurture and call your own But before you go gung-ho into finding any puppy or kitten for sale on the web or at a store maybe take a minute and think about adopting instead In Ocean County alone, there are plenty of places you can adopt from; All Fur One and even Pet Supplies Plus have adoptions that you can go to and try to find a new friend for your family But there's a little place hidden in the heart of Downtown Toms River that you're going to want to check out especially if you're looking to bring home a new cat LIDA is a small shelter located on Main Street in Toms River and it's a cat playroom where you can swing by play with all of the cats and sometimes kittens that they have there and if you really fall in love with one We stopped in just to play with some cats and ended up falling in love with an outgoing cat we eventually adopted and named Beignet The adoption process with LIDA was incredibly easy and Isabelle and her team of volunteers make sure that all of these cats are going to good homes and given a clean bill of health before you take them home Our little Beignet is slowly becoming more comfortable in her new home and has found a new favorite hiding place among our books If you'd like to visit LIDA for yourself they're open Fridays from 6 PM to 8 PM as well as Saturday and Sunday between 1 PM and 4 PM During those hours you can go in and visit all the cats and decide whether or not they'd be a good fit for your home LIDA is To use a different LLM provider, or to use the Python API, check out the GitHub documentation here Install the following libraries on your computer To create an OpenAI API Key navigate to your Profile > User API Keys save the API key in a variable called OPENAI_API_KEY launch the LIDA UI web app with the following command and then you’re all set to get started Select either the Live demo or Demo tab to view the web app This section goes through a few examples and tips using the Top 10 Films US Box Office dataset³ from Kaggle Before creating any data visualizations or summaries select Seaborn – a Python library for data visualization You can switch the visualization library/grammar at a later point there is an option to modify the Generation Settings and adjust other fields such as Max Tokens Click or drag the file to upload the dataset into the web app you can use one of the sample files provided TIP: If you get an error when trying to upload a file check your usage and billing access for the model provider you have selected Access issues can result in data file upload issues in LIDA the terminal window will display error messages that may be useful for troubleshooting an issue CAUTION: Be careful about if/when switching back to the LIDA homepage – this will result in losing the work in your current display The Data Summary section provides a description of the dataset and a summary of the fields in the dataset including column type This output is a result of the SUMMARIZER module mentioned previously The following image shows the Data Summary for the Top 10 Films US Box Office dataset There is a description for the entire dataset to view the data summary as a JSON dictionary This section shows a list of automatically generated goals and includes a description of what the visualization will display This output is a result of the GOAL EXPLORER module mentioned previously Here you can read through the different goals and select one to visualize in the Visualization Generation section Based on the goal selected in the previous section as well as the Python code used to generate the visual for that goal The following image shows the result for the goal "What is the distribution of movie releases by month?" and on the right is the Python code used to create the visual This code snippet can be copied for external use outside of the ones listed in the Goal Exploration section the following image shows the output for "What are the top 5 genres with the largest average budget?" there are 4 tabs that can be utilized: Refine modifies the chart using natural language commands The following image shows modifications made to the chart The chart was modified using natural commands to arrange the months in chronological order to display the values in a horizontal bar chart TIP: Make sure your style prompts are clear Otherwise you may end up with a distorted visualization or your natural language command may not render a chart so writing effective style prompts may require some refinement If you need to reset the visualization after a few style prompts not turning out as expected use the Clear Chat History button to reset the visualization provides a text explanation on how the visual was created – in terms of data transformations evaluates the generated chart across 6 dimensions: bugs and a description on why it received that rating There is an option to auto repair the chart If you agree with the recommendations provided in the chart evaluation then this is a nice and quick way to apply the fixes The following image shows an updated chart after auto repairing the chart based on the Aesthetics evaluation and corresponding code snippets— not tied to the initial goal This can be useful for brainstorming other charts This section highlights a few areas of consideration regarding the use of LLMs and IGMs in the data visualization and business intelligence field – including LIDA makes use of 2 metrics – Visualization Error Rate (VER) and Self-Evaluated Visualization Quality (SEVQ) VER shows how many of the generated visualizations result in code compilation errors SEVQ uses LLMs, such as GPT-4, to assess the quality of visualizations generated. It takes the average score of 6 dimensions – code accuracy, data transformations, goal compliance, visualization type, data encoding, and aesthetics. These dimensions each generate a score based on prompts to an LLM (to see a sketch of the prompts used, read the paper here)¹ these dimensions appear in the Evaluate tab in the LIDA web app These metrics evaluate visualization generation and they raise a good point – it’s important to keep in mind how we evaluate the use of LLMs and IGMs for data visualization and BI tools it’s important for practitioners to keep this in mind when implementing LLMs and IGMs for data visualization and BI solutions for their organization and ask themselves – What metrics do we need to consider going forward When utilizing LLMs and IGMs for data visualization within an organization there are several things to consider regarding deployment Use of these models for data visualization depending on factors such as the model size This can lead to high costs if not planned correctly and efficiently It’s important to make sure the correct infrastructure is set in place Testing more refined LLMs for a specific use case can also help in reducing the overall footprint data security and governance are important to keep in mind when using LLMs and IGMs for data visualization it’s crucial to ensure that data is secure within the tool and that it is governed throughout its use the chart explanations generated within LIDA focus on details regarding how the chart was created – in terms of data transformations While this is helpful for a developer creating charts with a dataset this kind of context is not beneficial for business users Business users and analysts would benefit from chart explanations that include insights about the data points within a visualization natural language text accompanying the charts can help provide key insights from a data visualization There are some natural language generation (NLG) tools that are able to integrate into business-intelligence (BI) tools today It’ll be interesting to see how this space continuous to evolve with LLMs Haven’t seen NLG with BI before? Check out this GitHub page for a quick intro it’s imperative to think about the end user and understanding what LLM + IGM + data visualizations solutions will fit that audience based on their goals and interests The examples earlier showed how data visualizations can be generated using LLMs and IGMs While these charts are automatically generated they still require modification to make sure they are well designed Often you can’t leave the first chart as it is This requires the use of the Auto Repair capabilities in LIDA which captures some but not all changes that should be made which requires some experience and knowledge in the data visualization domain These style prompts are inputted by the user in natural language and can include requests such as modifying chart titles The use of these style prompts can help users save time when developing charts – reducing the time to write code and reducing the time needed to debug and format code with the introduction of prompts in data visualization generation it becomes equally important to understand what makes a good prompt and specific will yield better results than one that is not can result in poor visualizations or unexpected results Now this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t leverage prompts in creating data visualizations – rather it’s to point out that there may be a learning curve as you get started Figuring out the right prompt may involve some testing Overall, LIDA is a great open-source tool to start learning about some of the advancements in LLMs, IGMs, & Data Visualization. It was like a summer job made in heaven for me WC: What was your exposure to the festival before you worked there this summer My friend and I went to the swing dancing event and all the Saturday night shows in 2019 but I actually performed in the Fort Langley Jazz Festival with the Ukulele Ensemble in 2019 I've been aware of it basically as soon as it started I know while you did business studies at UBC Can you talk about your background on the bass LM: Yeah! I did my undergrad in business. I just graduated, but obviously I'm a busy person, I like to keep myself occupied. I played the bass in high school in all the jazz bands and jazz combos. I wanted to keep my music up and going, so there's a jazz club, UBC Jazz Club. I remember, did you interview Rachel Therrien when she came here she just did an event with us that I was running which is an AMS club at UBC that runs jam sessions and hosts performances on-campus for UBC students; the funny thing is but in the previous years that I was involved all the kids that were running it in the exec team But there's a bunch of people who are passionate about jazz and [it] offered UBC students two times a week to hear free live jazz and then our weekly performances at the gallery we hosted events [...] I was the treasurer of it for the last two years before I graduated So I was heavily involved in all the executive decision-making of the UBC Jazz Club I met a lot of people – I think you've probably heard of Jeffrey Chen of Chen Baker – and started gigging in Vancouver there [It was] that jam session scene and branching out from that point onward WC: You are going to play at Tyrant on Saturday Can you talk about how you came up with the concept of the show and anything else you want to share about that gig coming up Have you heard of the Gander Jam LM: I was told about the Gander Jam [...] Actually with the Rachel Therrien event but that event we did with Rachel was to put women in jazz's voices ahead Being a female in the jazz scene is a very apparent thing that I experienced; thing is not the right word but I'm really passionate about including women in the scene because there's only one other woman in my band.. and I haven't really done anything professionally I'm not getting asked to be in any of these bands and I got so much positive feedback that I was like I know Dan myself: what if I just think of an idea and put together a show of music that I like and that I want to do As a business major and just in life in general and I went to her concert at the Gorge last year and my grandma and my sister and I camped overnight and left the next morning and she's collaborated with Herbie Hancock and a bunch of other jazz musicians and I know she has lots of jazz influences I know lots of people [...] they think of “Both Sides Now” But it's just music that I love and music that moves The first set is going to be a Joni Mitchell tribute of those songs from her Hissing of Summer Lawns album and her Court and Spark album But then the second set is going to be a more soulful with Marvin Gaye and more soulful funk with Stevie Wonder It's music that I love that I feel like a lot of people don't take the time to experience I know you posted about it and said that it would be your last Vancouver gig for a while so can you talk about your educational plans that are coming up here this fall I'm just so stunned that you know things about me my educational plans for the fall: I’m going to law school in Edmonton and I'm going to be in Edmonton for the next three years I'm pursuing a law degree because I also have that passion for advocacy and really enjoy intellectual activity and learning Hopefully people come to the show with like a scarcity mindset [laughs] can you describe what you did in your position there when the festival ended; so I got to have the last month of August to get ready I just got to interact with a hundred people who also love jazz so much that they want to volunteer their time to help out with our jazz festival And it was a whole array of people volunteering at the festival from brand-new immigrants to senior citizens and people who've lived in Langley all their lives the teenagers who want to get their volunteer hours They’re people who just genuinely really want to be around jazz and want to be involved in the community I'm really grateful for Karen and Dave granting me the opportunity to work with everyone because you're a coordinator at a festival I kept telling everyone that if it was any other festival that didn't have live music But I'm pretty sure I'll be doing it again next year but I've been offered the job for next year I think I'll take it into deep consideration and we also had a youth concert series that happened I was orienting and coordinating volunteers with that And then planning the volunteer program for the actual festival at the end of July working with people who also love jazz to put together this jazz festival that you'll remember as a story that you're taking away from this year It was 16-hour days for three days straight That's what you commit to by putting together a festival I had some good conversations with Tony Coleman she was blonde and fair-skinned and I'm Persian and she suddenly started speaking Farsi and then knew about the Iranian culture better than I did There was this family of Iranian immigrants that recently came I guess their English was worse than my Farsi so I got to practice giving instructions in this language that I know So now I tell people that maybe my Persian is not that bad because I can give instructions to volunteers [laughs] just lots of great adventures and beautiful friendships that were made and I'm really grateful for all the people that I recruited from my own personal network who came out my sister and my mom and my best friend all helped to volunteer and I was talking to the two main singers the night before like they're in character before they're on stage and I’m trying to have an interaction with them this happened; but everything happened to plan nothing went wrong [...] It was a great experience Is there anything else at all about the festival or about what you're up to that we haven't brought up that you wanted to shout out or mention before we wrapped it up I'm really grateful for where I’m at right now and where I’m leaving the city at knock on wood – that we're going to have a successful performance at Tyrant with music that I love he used to go to UBC before he went to Berklee I also just asked him one-on-one: I was like The first show I did at a pub in Vancouver was at the Portside with Jeffrey and we played at 2nd Floor a few months back brilliant drummer that I actually know from Langley as well He went to Fine Arts and I went to Langley Fundamental but we were also in the same youth orchestra when we were like 17 I was playing the bass and he was playing the timpani behind me So it's a really cool opportunity to play together I've never been actually able to play with him so it's really cool that I can finally play with him in a jazz setting Neal is also someone who frequented the UBC Jazz Club quite a bit and [whom] I've gotten to know really well I'm a very emotional person when it comes to my music choice And Spencer Drody: have you heard of Jazz House So it's kind of a conglomerate of all these different jazz scenes into this one band and I'm so excited to put her voice out there using this platform I don't know how she hasn't really gotten out there yet I think Vancouver will really love to hear it I have a stacked band that’s putting together music that I love Every time I listen to the setlist I'm like I have to remind myself that I put the setlist together: oh So I'm really grateful for everyone involved and this project is to share music that I love with Vancouver and the world Saturday, August 24, 2024 @ 9:30 PM - Tyrant Studios, Lida Magnus' Mid-Century Meets Modern w/ Jeffrey Chen, Rick Son, Karl DeJong, Tarane Tabeli, & guests ($17.50) The guitarist is in the Strange Worlds Trio who play Tyrant tomorrow; In California, we ended the prior school year with promising data that student attendance rates throughout the state are rising from historic lows during the pandemic While having students in seats is cause for celebration we must ensure that we have enough teachers in classrooms.  yet there are further measures we should be taking to make sure students receive the quality education they deserve The initiative we should be champing at the bit to implement is high-impact tutoring: tutoring in one-on-one situations or very small groups meeting at least 30 minutes scalable way to provide students with high-quality educators:  finds and develops tutors who connect virtually with students during the school day are supported by a school-based veteran educator to customize instruction Seventy-one percent of the 3,500 students across the country being tutored by Ignite fellows meet their semester-long reading and math goals When teachers are more confident stepping into their classrooms students are the ones who reap the rewards.  Tutors can focus on small groups or individual sessions with students — something that lead teachers don’t always have the capacity to do tutors can address specific learning gaps for individual students and allowing students to build authentic relationships with multiple educators/mentors I have had teachers tell me they wish they could clone themselves so they could work with more students to meet different needs and speeds tutors may be the closest thing we have to clones.   Prioritizing diversity. To provide a diverse experience for our nation’s students, we must have their educators — their role models — reflect them. This means we should prioritize recruiting and retaining teachers of color. Throughout California’s public schools 77% of the K-12 population is composed of students of color whereas only 37% of educators identify as people of color This kind of ratio is true for Los Angeles That’s why I’m excited to be welcoming the Ignite Fellowship to schools throughout Los Angeles (and expanding even further throughout California) this year helping bring more diverse and locally rooted teachers into classrooms People of color face historically more hurdles than white people in the workforce and this is even more extreme in the teaching profession Tutoring is a way to expand the diversity of the teacher pipeline and can increase students’ access to educators from diverse backgrounds Virtual programs like Ignite also allow for more flexibility and accessibility meaning fewer hurdles for aspiring teachers to become tutors and more opportunities for students to connect with tutors and mentors but the reality is that schools will be fighting to staff their classrooms all year Anything we can do to mitigate the detrimental effects that understaffed schools have on students should be a priority Investing in tutors is an actionable way to help staff schools with diverse educators with an added benefit of creating a pipeline of tomorrow’s teachers We have the proof that it will help our students Lida Jennings is the executive director of Teach For America Los Angeles and San Diego.  The opinions in this commentary are those of the author. to have record high numbers of people who leave the teaching profession after two years compared to teachers who receive proper schooling and become credentialed before entering the profession Funneling underprepared people into under resourced schools only further taxes the education system This author is using this article to promote TFA’s latest project rather than a sustainable solution to real education problems are no longer satisfied with the quality of academic instruction their children receive in school is a significant and rapidly growing market the K-12 tutoring segment is expected to reach a market size of $16.1 billion contributing to a projected total market size of $4.2 billion by 2024 This growth is fueled by increased demand for supplementary education The advent of such a massive surge in tutoring should be a powerful signal to K-12 education to transform how it educates children They will find a way for their most precious resource the executive director for contracts regarding school resource officers don’t detail officers’ role in routine disciplinary matters There are at least two ongoing court cases involving allegations of sexual misconduct against Department of Educational Science Hoogeboom–Hendriksen from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering Socio-technical systems are increasingly required to function in complex and unpredictable environments dynamic adjustments in team coordination to meet rapidly evolving task demands moment-by-moment changes in team and multi-team system coordination remain understudied within the Human Factors and Ergonomics field This thesis aims to bridge this gap by investigating coordination from a temporal perspective focusing on the dynamic nature of coordination restructuring and its importance as a mechanism for team resilience Chapter 2: Temporal interaction analysis techniques: Literature review exploring the value of integrating temporal interaction analysis techniques in sociotechnical systems research emphasising their potential in capturing dynamic moment-by-moment interactions that contribute to system resilience and adaptability Chapter 3: Interaction Dynamics: Literature review focusing on human-human teaming examining the role of interaction dynamics in shaping dynamic temporal processes demonstrating how evolving micro-behaviours and interaction patterns underline temporal phenomena Chapter 4: Capturing dynamic change in coordination patterns The case of Apollo 13: Empirical study exploring how digital analytic tools can enhance research on team coordination by providing a temporal lens for examining complex The analysis provides insight into the composition (what) and timing (when) of coordination restructuring Chapter 5: Navigating order and disorder: Empirical study examining emergency response teams as they train to perform resuscitation in high-risk Additionally to the composition and timing of coordination restructuring this study models the rhythm (how often) of coordination restructuring before and after training using an entropy analysis Please select what you would like included for printing: Copy the text below and then and works at Saxion University of Applied Sciences Walma van der Molen from the Faculty of Behavioural Sins from the Thomas More University of Applied Sciences and Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences and dr Guérin from the Academica University of Applied Sciences This dissertation aims to strengthen socioscientific issues (SSI) education by focusing on the resources available to students SSI education is a type of science and citizenship education that supports students’ informed and critical engagement with social issues that have scientific or technological dimensions This dissertation explores students’ SSI-related resources relevant to their engagement with SSI such as their attitudes and social resources SSI education and students’ resources are two separate fields of research that are rarely bridged a comprehensive overview of the resources that students bring to learning and decision-making about SSI has not been previously provided Lida Klaver combines literature on SSI education with studies on students’ resources to introduce the concept of socioscientific capital emphasizing the importance of considering students’ resources in SSI-based teaching To enable researchers to study and account for students’ SSI-related resources and to help teachers to get to know their students’ resources this dissertation includes the development and validation of two questionnaires: the Pupils’ Attitudes towards Socioscientific Issues (PASSI) questionnaire and the Use of Sources of Knowledge (USK) questionnaire These questionnaires were used to get insight into student differences regarding engagement with SSI resulting in differing patterns of students’ USK that were shown to be related to their attitudes The final study builds upon the arguments and findings of the first three studies This study is an exploration of the effects of SSI-based teaching on students’ attitudes toward SSI considering socioscientific capital (as indicated by students’ USK profile) The overall discussion of this dissertation focuses on the feasibility of SSI-based teaching and a socioscientific capital approach in the Netherlands This discussion provides valuable points of departure for the implementation of a socioscientific capital approach in primary and secondary education keeping in mind the challenges and opportunities that teachers face But is yours the only voice worth listening to In my work as an executive coach to business leaders I often see that operating in the C-suite can be accompanied by a soothing ambient sound known as complacency One client joked that complacency was piped through the HVAC system – a constant hum of agreement and cheers reinforcing that he was on the right track When you combine this phenomenon with confirmation bias mindsets become fixed rather than growth-oriented and companies risk missing critical industry trends This raises an important question: Are we overlooking valuable voices – voices with fresh insights and perspectives – simply because they aren’t sitting at the front of the room Traditional executive presence is outdated  Maybe you were raised under the same narrative as I was: if you look and sound the part and offer you the corner office when you achieve the qualities of executive presence that embolden leaders to lead influence isn’t about a power suit or a polished script Think of Steve Jobs’ black turtleneck or Mark Zuckerberg’s hoodie – what mattered wasn’t their wardrobe but their vision and impact Many of today’s most effective leaders break conventional molds proving that leadership presence is about authenticity There is evidence today of business leaders who aren’t the most eloquent or rehearsed but are moving industries with their vision for example – his public speaking is often unpolished yet his ability to disrupt industries like automotive How are we explaining his influence when he isn’t checking the traditional boxes on the executive presence scorecard a new leader is emerging with the enthusiasm of an NFL team taking the field on Superbowl Sunday While traditional models of leadership mapped closely to ideals of executive presence As I write in my new book, “The New Rules of Influence,” leaders today should recognize that times have changed and this is a good thing for all involved: Many of us have been … taught to wear the right clothes; pause at the right moments; project stoicism resisting displays of emotion (“don’t cry at work!”); and write our messages out in advance to ensure we hit all the key talking points in perfectly timed choreography the ability to connect with others; we’ve forgotten how to authentically build trust across communities (or even inside our organizations) to create truly sustainable influence where it matters The old rules for executive presence don’t work anymore As dress codes shifted away from red power ties and nylon pantyhose (thank goodness!) we’re also seeing influence moving from the front of the room to the back We “spoke when spoken to” as our parents first instructed you sat on your hands and hoped somehow things might change Positional authority is attached to the role It does not indicate someone’s leadership abilities or the sustainability of their personal brand It empowers someone with a title or rank to make certain decisions those without titles or rank are driving significant influence – offering insights that shift entire strategies Influence is no longer tied to hierarchy but to ideas and execution the reliance on rank is seen as less credible and impactful and the individual’s ability to influence is driven more by their clarity around why they want to lead understanding of who they are leading (bringing a service mindset earns bonus points here!) and how and where they show up someone can offer important – game changing – influence when they barely started up that corporate ladder Resist the temptation to just listen to the voices that nod fervently as you speak and will share how your vision aligns with their values and community – particularly if that’s not the same ones you attach to Seek out the quiet voices in the room—the ones holding back What they say could be the missing piece you didn’t know you needed CEOWORLD and ‘CEOWORLD magazine’ are trademarks of The CEOWORLD magazine LTD Austin Lowrey is a prolific artist who has created both a stunning body of work and a unique dream home on the outskirts of San Miguel de Allende The house is not only a beautiful fusion of art and design but also a homage to his late wife Lowrey’s body of work encompasses vibrantly colorful paintings and collages that lift the spirits of the viewer They offer a provocative dose of irony or punchy humor Some are abstractions featuring tactile explorations with paint while others are explosions of geometry and still others are illustrative Lowrey paints for approximately four hours per day whose careers led them over the decades to various universities and artistic communities in the U.S and who ultimately established themselves in Los Angeles “Lida had a friend who talked incessantly about a special Mexican town,” explains Lowrey “We decided we had to see San Miguel de Allende We came down in 2010 and immediately fell in love with the people the quality of the art scene and the sophistication of the design ethos here that we saw epitomized at YAM Gallery and Skot Foreman Fine Art we bought a colonial-era house on Canal Street.” “We named the house Casa de los Tíos in honor of the inheritance we had each received from beloved uncles which enabled us to buy it.” The couple worked with Barboza Arquitectos to create a multiple-story Then they set about building their dream home in the countryside on the outskirts of San Miguel they designed a truly spectacular house that would provide each of them with a gorgeous studio The house consists of three glass pavilions connected by glass corridors The stunning home has been featured in various international magazines “My parents were ahead of their time in the way they moved between the disciplines of art and design overlap and points of mutual inspiration in the art and design worlds,” noted their daughter intriguing art installations to the landscape surrounding the home She uses locally-made tiles and displays Mexican vernacular pottery and miss many things about the South — the waterfalls and mountains the places I danced in my youth — but I have found fresh inspiration and beauty here in Mexico,” noted Lowrey In San Miguel, the Lowreys discovered a thriving community of art- and design-oriented expats and found that noted L.A. artists such as Lari Pittman and Roy Dowell had homes here. San Miguel’s art scene has certainly evolved over the years. For decades, art students have come to study at the Instituto Allende and Bellas Artes Now those storied institutions are somewhat less central to the scene with many established artists working out of Fabrica la Aurora and creating their own studio spaces throughout the city and its environs Lowrey received his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Auburn University in graphic design and fine art He was a career professor of graphic design at the University of Georgia Indiana State University and last and longest at North Carolina State School of Design they established architecturally interesting live-work spaces for themselves They did this in the university towns of Raleigh Lida bought an old church in a blue-collar neighborhood and turned it into a gallery and antiques store named Revival where they became well-established in the local artist community They had conjoined 3,000-square-foot spaces; Austin’s space was decorated with early American art pottery flea market objects and outsider art and design and a number have journeyed to San Miguel to visit him the previous design director at Appalachian State University Lowrey even taught his daughter Sheridan at North Carolina State University “My parents have always been my best friends,” she said “because we share a love for art and design.” is a designer named to Boston Magazine’s list of Most Influential Bostonians for six consecutive years working in various paint and print media exploring both abstract and representational imagery with conceptual and technical vigor.” Her work she wrote “is also knowingly referential and witty in subject matter and form.” noted that “Both the artist and his art are not only deeply sophisticated and moving but also approachable and welcoming.” Lowrey’s work may be viewed at the San Miguel Art Loft To learn more, visit sanmiguelartloft.com.
