Sanders has been an ardent supporter of Community Health Centers for his entire career in Congress Community Health Centers receive about $7.4 billion in funding annually That's a drop in the bucket compared to the $3.8 trillion the U.S Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimated Americans spent on health care in 2019 representing nearly 18% of the nation's Gross Domestic Product "In my view we have to say at the least we have a very inadequate health care system," Sanders said "Over 90 million uninsured or under-insured; the highest prices for prescription drugs Price comparison: Why is it so hard to figure out health care costs in Vermont? "The Community Health Center program addresses all of these issues," Sanders added Vermont's 11 health centers, including in Burlington, recently received a total of $33.3 million in additional federal funding on top of what they normally receive. NOTCH's share was $2.6 million which its board of directors is currently trying to figure out how best to spend Vermont's health centers serve 187,000 patients out of 66 locations "That is almost one-third of the people in Vermont receiving primary care drugs or mental health counseling at Community Health Centers," Sanders said Vermont leads the nation in Community Health Centers Pam Parsons is the chief executive officer of NOTCH and one of three women who founded the health center Parsons and her husband owned a construction company in Richford specializing in standing seam metal roofs "We put the roof on Shelburne Farms," Parsons said On a recent tour of the NOTCH facility in Richford which occupies 44,000 square feet on four floors Parsons pointed out of a window on the second floor to a nondescript white house across Main Street that house was given to the community in the 1960s," Parsons said is haunted by the memories of failed businesses NOTCH itself rose from the ashes of a former furniture factory leaving the cinder-block core that the health center occupies Vermont 105 doubles as Richford's Main Street which is lined with low-lying 19th- and 20th-century buildings The town of about 2,500 people sits directly on the Canadian border A green archway above Main Street welcomes visitors and provides the time with an analog clock A group of community members consulted with what is now the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington to renovate the first floor of the donated house into a medical facility for doctors called Richford Health Center Inc. Richford's Rural Health Clinic welcomed its first patient in June 1994 "I used to refer to people who first came in as the advance guard," Perry said "I think we were embraced but I think there were fears it wouldn't last." one in Swanton and one in Alburgh,'" Parsons remembered Using money from the Vermont Department of Health which did not want to see the three clinics close 'You need to be a federally qualified health center,'" Parsons said Albans and Swanton; two dental clinics in Richford and Swanton; and two pharmacies in Richford and Swanton To put the impact of the organization in perspective Perry said NOTCH has 20,000 patients in Franklin County where a total of about 50,000 people are spread out over 700 square miles Then there's the grocery store NOTCH operates in Richford because Richford's only grocery store was about to go under in 2017 and Parsons decided she couldn't let that happen It would have a detrimental effect on the community's health The grocery store occupies the first floor of the Richford Health Center On the third floor there are 12 affordable apartments Sanders said that's not unusual for Community Health Centers "There's an expression in the Community Health Center world if you have seen one Community Health Center you have seen one Community Health Center," Sanders said "I was in one in The Bronx and they run an employment agency a pregnancy program and a nutrition program." The problem of accessCommunity Health Centers are not a panacea for all that ails Vermont's health care system In fact Richford Health Center shares at least one problem that plagues Vermont's largest hospital Pam Martin is a dentist at the Richford Health Center and is happy with her decision to come to Vermont "Most of the people who work here have been here for years Parsons said the dentist was probably booked out until July "You cannot get an appointment with me until October and the hygienist until November or December." When it comes to children who require so-called sedation dentistry "The specialist I refer to is in Middlebury "We try to keep everything in-house but some kids can't manage what happens and they need to be sleeping and when they wake up all their work is done." The wait list for a spot in Middlebury is one year Martin will do her best to take care of it "When they come in they're crying before I even walk in the room," Martin said "And you know in dentistry we don't hold kids down or open their mouths Darwin and Dawn on the NOTCH experienceAt the other end of the spectrum you'll find Darwin Harrington an 85-year-old retired contractor who lives in Montgomery Center with his wife The couple gets their primary and dental care at NOTCH "I feel like I am in good health," Darwin Harrington said We have the aches and pains that go along with age I hope it will stay that way a while longer." Harrington said his wife in particular has been "very pleased" with NOTCH "She feels she can ask questions and get a good intelligent answer," he said Asked about any drawbacks he has noticed using a Community Health Center Harrington said he couldn't speak to that point very well "We've just not had a bad experience with them," he said Contact Dan D’Ambrosio at 660-1841 or ddambrosio@freepressmedia.com Follow him on Twitter @DanDambrosioVT. This coverage is only possible with support from our readers — Students at Fyle Elementary School in Henrietta are on a mission … to be kind The school hosted Family Kindness Night on Wednesday in which students and their families performed acts of kindness together It’s all part of the school’s Operation Kindness fundraiser The goal is to spread cheer through good deeds but it’s also a skill that the kids need to learn and they need to practice so it’s something that will come naturally We hope that by teaching them this skill … it’s going to be their default response,” said Rebecca Lepel Wednesday’s kind activities included making bracelet kits for Bivona Child Advocacy Center and thank-you cards for EMTs Any person with disabilities who needs help accessing the content of the FCC Public file should contact Richard Reingold at rreingold@whec.com or 585-546-1701 Your Ads Privacy ChoicesIMDb Facebook Marketplace Statistics: Facebook marketplace is an online platform developed by Facebook that allows users to buy and sell various items within their local communities It provides a convenient way for individuals and organizations to connect and engage in buying and selling activities Facebook marketplace is integrated within the Facebook platform accessible through the Facebook website and mobile app It leverages the existing user bases of Facebook making it easily accessible to millions of users worldwide there was a surge in listings for essential items such as hand sanitizers and cleaning supplies on Facebook Marketplace COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns led to a shift in consumer behavior towards local transactions with people preferring to buy and sell items within their local communities on Facebook Marketplace Facebook Community Standards Enforcement Report) Facebook Marketplace has emerged as a popular and convenient platform for buying and selling goods within local communities With its widespread user base and user-friendly interface it offers individuals and businesses a simple and accessible way to connect and transact The platform’s integration with Facebook’s social network also provides a level of trust and familiarity among users While there may be some concerns regarding privacy and security Facebook Marketplace continues to evolve and improve its features to address these issues Facebook Marketplace has become a valuable tool for those seeking to engage in local commerce and streamline their buying and selling experiences Facebook Marketplace is an online platform within the Facebook social media platform that allows users to buy and sell items locally It provides a convenient way for individuals and businesses to connect and engage in buying and selling activities Facebook reported that over one billion people globally used Facebook Marketplace every month The popularity of categories on Facebook Marketplace may differ based on location and user preferences commonly popular categories include clothing and accessories Facebook Marketplace allows users to browse and search within specific categories to find the items they are looking for businesses can use Facebook Marketplace to sell their products and services It offers opportunities for both individual sellers and businesses to connect with potential customers in their local communities Tajammul Pangarkar © 2025 Market.us Scoop BMW’s M Division has been the official safety car provider of the MotoGP since 1999 they have prepped three new rides and a bike Sporting new attire and emergency lights are the 2021 M3 Sedan, M4 Coupe and M5 CS joined by the first M model from BMW Motorrad All of them will celebrate their debut on March 28 at the season opener in Qatar. a long shot Robert Bowe’s Hook Road farm has been in the family Today the 78-year-old is growing soybeans and corn on about 1,400 acres — some he owns and some he rents from local agricultural landowners At the opposite end of the spectrum is Denis Lepel an up-and-coming organic farmer in Farmington who has less than one year of experience under his belt but enough plans and dreams to keep him busy for the rest of his life Both are sitting pretty atop some of the highest quality farmland in the northeast United States And though their backgrounds and experiences are entirely different both take the “growing” business quite seriously According to the 2007 Census of Agriculture with an additional 100,000 acres rated as highly productive It’s got just the right blend of precipitation along with a relatively lengthy growing season sometimes more than soil and weather conditions have to be right for a farm to stand the test of time Bowe and his family have seen their share of ups and downs but through it all they’ve run a thriving business in Farmington for more than a century “The weather didn’t do us much good this year,” said Bowe and the outlook for local farmers in general His feelings are mixed on how well town and county officials are addressing the needs of farmers and agriculture landowners but I don’t know if we can stop the growth in Victor and Farmington,” said Bowe They call it a farming community but it’s fast changing When somebody comes along and wants to pay a good amount of money per acre (for development) (landowners) aren’t very smart if they turn it down.” Even with decades of successful farming behind him Bowe is uncertain what the future holds for local farmers “I think the farming will start to get pushed right out,” said Bowe “I don’t know where it will be 10 years or 20 years Look what happened up in Henrietta — that all used to be farmland There was a gas station and that’s about it all the way from Macedon to Pittsford.” Agriculture Economic Development Specialist at Cornell Cooperative Extension said the local farming outlook is actually quite good “Over the last nine months I’ve assisted two new farmers to get started in the farming industry,” said Ochterski “Their intent was to move to Farmington to start farms I find that (things are) a lot more positive than people would think We could get caught in a rut of thinking farms are disappearing we are seeing more land in agriculture than ever before Fields that were idle are now in production.” Denis Lepel of Lakestone Farm in Farmington can attest to that He’s going strong after less than a year in production Lepel’s journey to Farmington took a detour when he moved from Rochester all the way to Queens to start a family he got the itch to launch his own certified organic farm returned to his roots this spring to purchase a 60-acre parcel on County Road 28 in Farmington The land he selected had been idle for a number of years — perfect conditions for Lepel to gain certification for organic growing even though its a little more land than we wanted,” said Lepel who currently has three main farm ventures — vegetables and their two (soon to be three) young children have been bouncing back and forth between Queens and Farmington since they moved last winter they’ll welcome baby number three sometime in December “I only had one year prior experience in farming,” said Lepel “Most people have more so they have an idea (of what to expect) I did it very small to start with — just about an acre he planted some early crops and was able to go to his first farmers market the first full weekend of June “I did very well at the markets — I sold well over twice the amount of my goal It’s nothing I can make a living off of yet but I didn’t approach this with the thought that I’m going to make a living the first season.” Midway through the season Lepel was able to open a payroll account and hire one person part time Lepel said his wife will also work in the garden with him “There’s so much variety to the land that I have,” he said “There are a lot of opportunities — it’s already well suited for so many different things.” what does the future look like for the owners of Lakestone Farm “Ten years from now I hope to be producing organic pork along with my organic chicken,” Lepel said “And I hope to be (farming) about 5-10 acres in vegetables at that time I’d like to have an apprenticeship program to teach other farmers what I’m doing I hope this is something our family can use to support ourselves.” the Cornell Cooperative Extension is hosting a series of agriculture roundtables — the most recent in Victor and Farmington — to provide farmers and people with an interest in agriculture issues an opportunity to talk about their concerns and observations “We are doing them all over Ontario County from September through December,” said Jim Ochterski We had to do it this time of year when our farm operators will be available.” A summary report of the discussions will be drafted by the end of December and findings will be used to craft a new agriculture enhancement plan for the next eight-ten years there were two common themes that resurfaced time and time again “One of the big themes that has come out of these sessions is that farmland resources — open fields forests — seem to be taken for granted,” said Ochterski “The farmers would like their a land to be recognized as a base of business rather than just an open field.” or people walking their dogs trespass — even unintentionally they’re doing it on an actual place of business “We’d like to see a change in the mindset,” he said So often when we see a field we think of it as just open space Each of those fields is pumping thousands of dollars into the Ontario County economy — it not just ‘vacant field.’” has to do with the sharing of rural roads between farmers and their non-farm neighbors or other rural residents who aren’t familiar with the limitations of farming gear “There’s a lot more traffic on what used to be quiet country roads,” Ochterski said with rather impatient drivers who are unfamiliar with the scale and nature of farm equipment While Bowe is concerned about the fast pace of encroaching development at 78 he has other things on his mind as well: Like who (if anyone) will take over the dynasty when he finally hangs up his rake “I’ve got a son and a grandson,” said Bowe “(My grandson) seems to be interested right now And Lepel is hoping he can keep his dream alive and growing for the long haul “I just hope to be still doing this (in ten years),” Lepel said “I hope this is something our family can use to support ourselves.” Ochterski hopes when neighbors and community leaders view an open space they will come to see it for what it really is: economic space “It doesn’t need to be converted into other types of economic space.” Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives Reuters screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET Will this invention leave you down in the dumps I'm all for technology that is truly helpful now that it's supposedly being offered to the masses it might cause many to wonder about the future so here goes: This is a device that attaches to undies in order to tell you when you need to go to the toilet As Reuters reports, this is the Dfree. It predicts fecal excretion. The Huffington Post says that it was originally created for those who suffer from fecal incontinence -- primarily those advanced in years However, it was presented last week at the Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies in Tokyo. There reportedly suggested this was something everyone can use Surely many people are already alert to nature's calling unless they've consumed something untoward Isn't there a fear that this may become another gadget that pointlessly takes away from something humans can cheerily cope with themselves Triple W's Ryohei Ochiai told Reuters: "The device goes on your stomach and uses ultrasonic waves to monitor your internal organs and sends the data to smartphones to be displayed." Some users complain that it's chafing their skin so the manufacturers are working on better ways to attach it to clothing If Dfree really becomes something de rigueur for all then humans will rely on their smartphones to tell them when to go to the restroom Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker Register to Drapers to read ONE FREE article and a FREE digital edition Swimwear and lingerie brands Charnos and Lepel have cancelled their spring 19 orders after being sold to lingerie brand Pour Moi Pour Moi bought Charnos and Lepel owner LF Intimates earlier this month for an undisclosed sum Lepel Swimwear and Lepel London were taken from stockists but never went into production The new owner has offered Pour Moi as an alternative to “fill any holes” in customers’ stock Lepel’s core range “continuity stock” will be delivered between May and June and the autumn 19 collection will be launched as normal However, Lepel London, which is stocked by Asos has been discontinued from autumn 18 onwards Pour Moi managing director Michael Thomson said: “As soon as we took over the company we made sure that everyone knew the situation We told stockists [on 15 January] that they will not be receiving the spring 19 collection Lepel London is not successful for the company and loses money He added: “As with any brands that fall on hard times it is imperative that we get things back up and running as quickly as possible and are very appreciative of all the support and loyalty the customers give “The team at both Charnos and Lepel have been through a very tough few years with constant redundancies and difficulties faced We are very excited that they are now part of the Pour Moi family and looking forward to building the business back to its former glory achieving 50% year-on-year growth in the last three months We have the resource and capabilities to ensure that we can achieve the same at both Charnos and Lepel.” Tags analysis and advice to keep you updated… New Look has successfully onboarded 100% of its core supplier base onto… Marks & Spencer has reassured that all third-party brands trading on its… Get full access to all the fashion industry news and intelligence you need Browse the archive of more than 55,000 articles read the daily and weekly newsletters in full and gain priority access to Drapers events Today's print edition Home Delivery Title: Ambassador of Germanygoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1499653692894-0'); }); URL: https://japan.diplo.de/ja-ja In a time of both misinformation and too much information quality journalism is more crucial than ever.By subscribing Your subscription plan doesn't allow commenting. Trying to take it all in on a one day visit, as I did this week, can be pretty challenging, and after an initial walk through of the gardens, it is always worthwhile revisiting one or two that particularly appealed to observe the finer details. This year, for me it was the Cork garden designer Hendrick Lepel who I revisited. He designed a small garden to showcase a beautiful and very practical glass pavilion, three metres in diameter, with two rotating glass shells which allow the doors to be opened right back 180 degrees, removing the glass wall between the structure and the garden. It won a silver medal in the Show Garden category at Bloom. The planting in The Sun Harness Garden is cool and green, creating a relaxing, tranquil atmosphereThis allows the garden into the space, providing ventilation and shelter from whatever direction the wind is coming from as the glazing remains for the other 180 degrees. The ability to change where the glazed wall remains is genius and appropriate for an Irish summer where wind directions can vary. Hendrick describes the 5m x 8m garden space designed around the glass pavilion as “a small garden designed for a retired couple that like gardening”. Many of the larger trees for the garden were supplied by Cork-based Green Piece Nursery, which is located near Halfway and specialises in trees, shrubs, grasses and perennials, see www.greenpiecenursery.ie for more information. The garden was designed to inspire calm and tranquility with many shades of green combined together and some subtle hints of colour throughout. Speaking with Hendrick, he is passionate about microclimate, and with his background as a stone mason, he is very enthusiastic about all the benefits natural stone walls create by trapping the heat from the sun during the day, storing it and releasing this gradually at night. The planting creates a woodland edge facing south and uses taller trees to create shelter from the north. The value of south-facing dry stone walls for wildlife is huge and we need to create more habitat for lizards in Ireland! This garden is all about making the most of the light and heat from the sun, and sitting in the glass pavilion the heat on a dull and showery day was so welcome. The floor is insulated using a natural material called leca, which helps to retain the heat within the structure when the doors are closed. Oliver and Liat Schurmann’s garden, called ‘In Perspective’, looks at gardening into the future and is thought-provoking with a lattice structure sitting within and enclosing a landscape. The garden can be accessed along a walkway which looks into a flooded internal courtyard with some very beautiful planting. The plant list was cleverly executed, with all potted and hand labelled on display on a stand adjacent to the garden. Nicola Haine’s garden ‘Coming Home to Nature’ focuses on managing rainwater using sustainable urban drainage systemsNicola Haine’s ‘Coming Home to Nature’ focused on managing rainwater and encouraging biodiversity into the garden. There were interesting insights into the movement of rainwater once it is captured, and how to slow down surface water run-off and help to allow the soil to absorb water by incorporating different elements like Grasscrete, ponds and wetland planting into the garden. Other Cork winners at Bloom included Ann Hester, of Passage West, a member of Cork Flower Club, who won two Bronze Medals, and Angela Heffron, of Cobh Flower and Horticulture Club, who won a Silver Medal. There are always a few plants that seem to feature in nearly every show garden, and at this time of year foxgloves are a popular choice with their spires of pollinator-friendly flowers in shades of white and pink. Cirsium, or brook thistle, was also used in a lot of gardens but the plant that caught my eye was in Oliver and Liat Schurmann’s concept show garden, ‘In Perspective’, and it was Zizea aurea or golden alexanders. It is interesting when a plant features in a show garden similar to a weed in your own garden and looks gooD, it provides a new perspective! It reminded me a lot of ground elder which I am waging war with at present. The zingy acid yellow flowers create a colourful ground cover with their frothy umbel flowers and this plant is native to Canada and the US. It prefers a moist-growing environment but is apparently tolerant of a range of soil types. I’ve been inspired to embrace the ground elder, I certainly will try to look at it differently after this weekend!
