Characteristic works by Chagall from this period of early maturity are the nightmarish The Dead Man (1908)
which depicts a roof violinist (a favourite motif)
in which a portrait becomes an occasion for the artist to experiment with arranging black and white
Often the principal character is the romantically handsome
Memories of childhood and of Vitebsk were major sources of imagery for Chagall during this period
Chagall painted local scenes and a series of studies of old men; examples of the series are The Praying Jew (or The Rabbi of Vitebsk
the daughter of a wealthy Vitebsk merchant; among the many paintings in which she appears from this date onward are the depiction of flying lovers entitled Birthday (1915–23) and the high-spirited
acrobatic Double Portrait with a Glass of Wine (1917)
where he discovered that a large number of the pictures he had left behind in 1914 had disappeared
in the 1920s Chagall also produced a number of smaller collections of engravings
and an impressive quantity of coloured lithographs and monotypes
“The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk” brought a brilliant show of color, music, dance and poetry to the Overture Center at its regional premiere from Jan. 25 to Feb. 11.
The Forward Theater Company, a local professional theater company based in Madison, put on the musical during its opening run in Madison. The musical was written by Daniel Jamieson, an actor and London native.
Set in the backdrop of the early 20th century, “The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk” tells the captivating love story between Marc Chagall — a famous Russian Jewish painter best known for his early modernism — and his wife, Bella.
Chagall’s artworks were transformed from canvas to theatrical stage by Forward. The design team took his paintings and layered them throughout the 90-minute play in the form of lighting, set design and emotionally rich music, creating an imaginative spectacle combining multiple mediums of artistic storytelling.
Chagall’s art showed up in the stained glass backdrop of the stage, costuming for Chagall and Bella, and Chagall’s actual portraits. One character, a Rabbi, was even played by a physical Chagall painting.
What did art mean in an inaccessible age? Like most theatrical shows, “The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk” informally asked big questions through poetry, movement and song. Chagall witnessed wars, revolutions, births and deaths. Different social and environmental circumstances influence the inward reflections upon viewing art in the theater. This was just one of the musical's many messages, art is based on interpretation. It is based on human experience.
For Chagall and Bella, art was not as accessible as it is today. You could not create something on a computer or find inspiration from apps like Instagram or Pinterest. Art was much harder to create, and artists who could make a living from their work were few and far between.
What held the two together in their pursuits was mutual love.
“Each night Marc comes home, and we invent a new color,” Bella (Emily Glick) said during the show.
The couple emphasized that to create art, you also need to create love, a concept the show depicted as an inseparable duality with pain. To continue as an artist, you must believe in what you are creating, who you are creating for and why you are creating.
“The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk” immerses audience members into a world of pure imagination. In the show, Chagall (Marcus Truschinski) took much of his artistic inspiration from his childhood. When he grew older and had to report to the financial and social constraints of being an adult, he came to an artistic block.
The lighting team showed the ebbs and flows of Chagall’s creativity. Lively bright hues of green and purple appeared when Marc was inspired, and darker, bleaker colors appeared when he was frustrated.
The audience is put directly into Chagall’s mind, seeing and feeling what Chagall sees and feels, just through different eyes. The perspective furthers a central theme addressed in the show: when someone is your soulmate, you see things the same through different eyes.
“The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk” shows how love can be art. It is a painfully beautiful and inspiring show that encompasses the immeasurable existence of an artist.

Madison-based Forward Theater’s chamber musical tells an epic love story in 90 minutes
When Bella Rosenfeld meets Marc Chagall, she’s holding a red balloon. She looks like that iconic Bansky painting
As the first spark of love makes her lose her grip
“The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk,” onstage from Forward Theater in the Overture Center Playhouse through Feb
sparkles in tiny transcendent moments like this
Daniel Jamieson’s chamber musical tells an intimate
Director Brian Cowing, recently named the artistic director of Children’s Theater of Madison
frames the play with a simple love song and a touch of vaudeville soft shoe
and they spin around the center of the stage
joyful yet longing — for the rest of the tale
They court briefly before Marc heads to Paris
where he “learnt everything I know about painting in my first 10 minutes at the Louvre.” They marry
though Marcus Truschinski gives the artist an impish youthfulness that blooms when he’s close to Bella
Bella’s playfulness lifts Marc and moves him to paint. Glick’s sly smile as she extends a pointed toe recalls her other roles on Madison stages — catch a glimpse of Ilona in “She Loves Me” in that swivel
“We’re like a pair of opera glasses,” Bella tells Marc
on their “milkmoon” just after their wedding
Cowing’s production works like an act of translation
Petals float down from above and messages drop in straight down
Reaching arms and arching backs echo the movement of a paintbrush
Ian Ross composed the klezmer-inspired score
accordion and mandolin (played by music director Sam Taylor) and cello (Brian Grimm)
Those more intimately familiar with Chagall’s work will see the artistic layers in “Flying Lovers,” echoed by a gorgeous
sloping set designed by Chris Dunham and lit by Greg Hofmann
letters and cityscapes burst with color and shrink into shadow
Chagall, a prolific 20th century artist who worked across styles, may be having a theatrical moment. This piece, Jamieson’s dramatization of the Chagall love story, took top honors at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017
James Sherman’s “Chagall in School,” produced at Theatre Wit in Chicago two years ago
takes a deeper dive into Chagall’s return to Vitebsk in 1919 to run a new school for art with no fees or age restrictions
Suprematist artists making abstract work of “pure feeling” threw him out
“Flying Lovers” charms even without context
but like any well-made piece inspired by history
it inspires a closer look into real biography
One late night discovery: Chagall’s painting from the Moscow State Yiddish Theater in 1920 inspired the title for “Fiddler on the Roof.” Delightful

strong hugs and tears of joy - no one hid how happy they were to touch a peaceful life
It was not for the first time that recuperation holidays for the residents of Donbass were organized in Vitebsk Oblast
“It has become a good tradition for us to organize such projects with the support of our enterprises
organizations and the Aleksei Talai Foundation
It is symbolic that we welcomed the delegation of vacationers on the eve of the New Year - a magical time when we all hope for a miracle

a fantastic saga about a journey through galaxies and a love story on board—just about any film idea can be brought to life in Moscow
the city has built a huge open-air space with fake houses
streets and courtyards from cities in Russia
Cinema Park Phase 1 was unveiled this summer
It is expected to be a key site of the Moscow Film Cluster
a world-class project being created in Moscow
scriptwriters and actors have 18 locations
featuring old churches and fairytale houses
streets of today’s Moscow and even the steps of the Reichstag, at their disposal
These sets can be seen in films and during themed tours
A mos.ru reporter has visited the most popular of them
is located in the Krasnopakhorsky District of Moscow
Welcomed at the main entrance with a futuristic arch featuring relief panels and neat letters of the name as if written by hand, we are heading towards a large building with panoramic windows occupied by the educational center of the cinema park
the Moskino Cinema and a Gonzaga Theater set
Guide Aleksandra Vasilyeva is greeting a tour group at the glass door and accompanying them to the bus
“The cinema park today has 18 location shooting sites
The number of locations is to increase to more than 64 with the cinema park area growing almost sixfold
The park is expected to be the largest location shooting site in the world,” the tour guide says
which is a large grey pavilion numbered 19 housing the prop and costume center Firebird
It features more than 2.5 million items: furniture
neatly laid out clothes and shoes from different eras
The pavilion houses any item—from cast iron and a gramophone to an old-fashioned TV
Multi-meter shelves have an abundance of exhibits from the past
specialists are bending over a mountain of old suitcases to select props for future filming
Over and over again they are repeating a set of numbers: 176
by which one can find out its availability and location on the shelves
It is indicated with a special sticker to find the item and book it for the film
Things from the film set are often brought to the pavilion for storage to be used later
when filming the next season of the TV series,” explains Aleksandra Vasilyeva
The next point is a location shooting site
The bus starts moving and three minutes later we find ourselves in quiet St
The old cobblestones and two-story houses with straight window frames make streets look realistic
such buildings are not made of brick or concrete
The main building materials for location houses are polystyrene foam and plywood
Having looked at the houses of the cultural capital of Russia
This country is represented by four location shooting sites: the streets of Berlin with characteristic signs
Сheckpoint Charlie that separated the GDR and the FRG
a model of the Berlin Wall and the steps of the Reichstag
gloomy columns and layers of dark paint that barely survived the shelling are an ideal picture for shooting the most poignant film about the war
“Specialists are working on the sets on site
Advertisements can be posted onto the display windows to convey the atmosphere of the century
and bullet holes can be made in the walls if shooting happens in the scene,” emphasizes Aleksandra Vasilyeva
Behind the huge gates with bright red signs there is a site with an earthling base on another planet
“This is the set for Alexei Rybnikov’s new film
The film’s main character remembers that he once was posted on a distant planet
The earthling base created for filming can be seen in the movie
The work on the site was completed only recently
and now the sets are being dismantled,” says the mos.ru source
This site has the largest corner chroma key in Europe to create any complex scenes: from a plane diving to a journey to various planets of our Galaxy
not the green color but the blue one was used to create the chroma key
this is because it is an outdoor location and does not color the contours with reflected light as much as interior green chroma keys do
“The secret of chroma key lies in contrast
The reason is that they are not found on human skin
which makes the actors stand out from their background,” notes Aleksandra Vasilyeva
There is usually an airplane parked in front of the huge chroma key on the set
Now it has been moved to make room for filming
Moskino Cinema Park also has its own airport
and the interiors look realistic—with check-in desks
Inspired by the building of Platov Airport in Rostov-on-Don, it can be repainted and redesigned to resemble any other airport
Movie characters can set off on a journey from the railway station, next to the fake airport
It is an exact copy of the Vitebsk Railway Station in St
the platform canopies are made of automotive plastic
“Airports and railway stations are very popular filming sites
filming in such places is very challenging because of restricted areas and permissions required
the cinema park offers comfortable locations to create an atmosphere of various centuries,” notes the mos.ru interlocutor

sidewalks and houses with carved bay windows—Moscow’s recognizable buildings are in one location
It features famous buildings on Bolshaya Nikitskaya
“The location presents a combined image of Moscow to shoot films depicting a wide variety of periods—from 1850 to the present day
There is no need to leave the cinema park,” the tour guide emphasizes
Another unique site is Cathedral Square of the Moscow Kremlin
In the center of the square is Lobnoye Mesto
the Palace of the Facets and the Kremlin Wall with the Tainitskaya Tower can also be found there
one can see how accurately the scenic artists have recreated the brickwork
Visitors can only recognize polystyrene foam if they touch the wall
The lightweight material produces a distinctive sound
Preparations for shooting a film are currently underway at Cathedral Square
scenic artists are building fences from logs and somewhere in the distance actors in grey caftans are rehearsing their roles
Aleksandra Vasilyeva suggests ending the cinematic journey with a curious tradition: smashing a plate to attract good luck
This is what directors do before filming begins

and Emily Glick in "The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk," Forward Theater
the world still contains brokenness and sorrow
Such a moment takes place partway through The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk
a musical play mounted by Forward Theater and playing at the Overture Center-Playhouse through Feb
The love story of Marc Chagall and his wife
unfolds over about 90 minutes and against a backdrop of geopolitical upheaval
beautifully captures the passion and color that emerged from this union — and fed Chagall's work — it struggles to hold
But how wonderfully this production portrays those heady early days of love
but allowed to achieve his genius in large part
played with operatic fullness by Emily Glick
and rich and lovely lighting design by Greg Hofmann
lifting and vibrant qualities of some of Chagall's most recognizable works onto the stage
Set designer Chris Dunham beautifully blends whimsy and gravitas
Petals and letters fall from the sky to move the story along
The backdrop is reminiscent of Chagall's stained-glass work while suitcases propped and stacked around the stage nod to the forced migration that marked so much of the modern European Jewish experience
And the Chagalls were no exception to that experience
The audience knows from the start that the titular Vitebsk
not in the way that Marc remembered and painted it
Gone are the cows and chickens and dozens of synagogues and smells of his mother's coffee brewing
the city's Jews had nearly all either fled farther into the Soviet Union or been massacred at the hands of the Nazis
These decades of global calamity mark an odd shift in the pacing of the play
which seems to want to move too quickly through the pain
It suggests that a love story is essentially told through the passion of courtship
and not how it perseveres in the face of horror and unfathomable loss
banal challenges that arise in a marriage between two brilliant people tossed up against those circumstances
but she alone is the ground beneath him: the force that keeps him going
It's not an accident that we have heard of Marc but need a play to tell us that the woman in his paintings was named Bella
She alone cares for their infant daughter in her first days
Bella vows to "waste her life" with her beloved
while she has maintained his existence in the face of seismic world shifts
But maybe it's impossible to truly hold onto the aches and losses of love alongside its joys and generative qualities
a man seated near me sighed so audibly it was as though he'd been holding his breath the entire time
It was as though the audience had been brought to a precipice
His name is Daniel Jamieson and he created the show over several years
The play then won the highest accolade at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2017
the story couldn’t have come to theatrical light

I have a confession; I have seen The Flying Lovers of Vitebsk before
I’ve seen it twice before in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse and at Wilton’s Music Hall
I loved it so much I jumped at the chance to see it again
It gave a completely different perspective to the performance

Marc Antolin as Marc Chagall and Audrey Brisson as Bella Chagall. The Flying Lovers tells the story of Jewish Russian painter Marc Chagall and his muse
We witness momentous history through their eyes; from their meeting in 1909 in Vitebsk (in modern-day Belarus)
and the context and consequences of the spread of both Communism
All this is achieved with a cast of two: Marc Antolin as Marc Chagall and Audrey Brisson as Bella Chagall
They are ably supported on stage by Composer and Musical Director Ian Ross on Piano and James Gow on cello
As soon as Ian started to play the piano I felt a sense of excitement that I very rarely feel in these COVID days
the music is beautiful and truly encapsulates the atmosphere and events that are taking place throughout the play’s proceedings
Everything about this production is delightful
the set design and the costumes are all perfect
Green cows and red cockerels feature heavily
Marc Antolin demonstrates tremendous athleticism
leaping and springing around the stage and he and Audrey Brisson also have spectacular singing voices
Marc and Bella see the same things and enjoy and appreciate the same things
they live through tremendous hardships together
With Marc working long hours while Bella stays in their tiny flat in St Petersburg in order to look after their baby
paints them and puts his name at the bottom of the painting
who is highly intelligent and well-educated writes a journal which is not discovered and translated until after her death
The Chagalls were soulmates who saw the same things but saw them differently
probably Director Emma Rice’s greatest triumph
Perhaps you’ve seen them floating over a Russian village
Or perhaps you’ve seen her toppling forward
as he arches above her head and steals a kiss
Meet Marc and Bella Chagall—the flying lovers of Vitebsk
Marc and Bella are immortalised as the picture of romance
in life they walked through some of the most devastating times in history

Bristol Old VicEmma Rice’s final Kneehigh show is a love letter to the company she founded as much as a celebration of Marc and Bella Chagall and their lost Russian-Jewish world
but day to day it was Bella who kept them airborne
The tension between a personal life and the artist’s life
is constantly examined in this deceptively simple and yet complex show
The Jewish population of Vitebsk before the second world war was 180,000
When Russian forces liberated the city in 1944 only 180 remained
black and white postcards of Vitebsk are handed from the stage into the audience where they are swallowed up and disappear
Watch a trailer for The Flying Lovers of VitebskThis and the other great events of the 20th century
provide the background to a piece that in Sophia Clist’s design – like a rackety wooden raft tossed on the waves of history – conjures the richness of Chagall’s paintings and the hustle and bustle of daily life: the steam from a samovar starting to bubble; a muddle of shoes recalling the Holocaust
This is a show that feels deeply personal and deeply felt
reflecting back Chagall’s art from the stage
but it’s also a paean to the quiet creativity of uncelebrated or less celebrated lives
and to the idea that even when you find your soulmate you are seeing the same things through different eyes
Audrey Brisson and Marc Antolin are so utterly delightful as the lovers you could gobble them up. Rice delivers a parting love letter to Kneehigh and its audiences
Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko attended the Vitebsk Oblast harvest festival Dazhynki 2024 in Polotsk
It is necessary to make up minds about a strategy designed to develop Vitebsk Oblast and primarily its agribusiness complex
Aleksandr Lukashenko gave the relevant instructions when he arrived in the city of Polotsk
“What are we going to do with Vitebsk Oblast or in Vitebsk Oblast?” Aleksandr Lukashenko asked civil servants and primarily the agriculture and food minister upon arriving in the city
“I’d like to warn you: if the current President remains in place
and the oblast governor will tell me every little detail of what we will do about Vitebsk Oblast
Despite the festive occasion I can say that Vitebsk Oblast works poorly.”
