A 30-year-old man is facing more than a dozen charges in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old.
Durham police say they began an investigation on April 30 after receiving information from police in Hamilton that a young teen had been sexually assaulted and forcibly confined in the Ajax area.
“The suspect picked up the 14-year-old victim in Hamilton and drove her to Ajax, where she was confined and sexually assaulted over a period of days,” police said in a statement.
On May 2, 30-year-old Gowryshankar Kathirkamanathan of Ajax was taken into custody. He is facing a total of 15 charges, including five counts of sexual assault, five counts of sexual interference, forcible confinement, uttering threats and assault.
Police say Kathirkamanathan and the 14-year-old victim were known to each other through a mutual connection, but did not provide any further details about the relationship.

Jennifer McKelvie rode a Toronto city council cold streak into Parliament
We apologize, but this video has failed to load.Try refreshing your browser, ortap here to see other videos from our team.Play VideoArticle contentMcKelvie
a deputy mayor and longtime councillor for Scarborough-Rouge Park
won the federal riding of Ajax in last Monday’s election
ahead of the 39.1% for Conservative Greg Brady
McKelvie’s history in east Scarborough is well-known
as she ran for council unsuccessfully in 2014
led a community non-profit and then won a seat at City Hall in 2018
McKelvie told the Toronto Sun she has family and professional ties to Durham Region
she said her experience makes her “the ideal candidate to deliver results for Ajax in Ottawa.”

Her last months on council were not her brightest
McKelvie’s name was attached to two high-profile – and doomed – proposals in 2025: the creation of an aboriginal city councillor and the takeover of an arena’s administration
The Indigenous councillor concept came from the city’s aboriginal affairs advisory committee and was essentially rejected by the city’s executive committee in March
no councillors spoke at the meeting about the idea
and it’s unclear how such a position was intended to function
telling the committee the concept of an unelected councillor would be “undemocratic
More baffling was McKelvie’s choice to second a motion by Councillor Chris Moise to remove almost all of the board of Moss Park Arena and replace them with a group of people that appeared to include some of his political donors
said the motion McKelvie seconded “should never have been here on the floor of this council.”
Most Torontonians likely know McKelvie best for filling in as mayor
McKelvie’s most recent moment in the political spotlight was her star turn on Taylor Swift Way
McKelvie brought forward a member’s motion to temporarily rebrand a downtown route between Toronto City Hall and the Rogers Centre as Taylor Swift Way
and even brought a custom T-shirt to the council floor to drum up excitement
McKelvie said the costs of the ceremonial street signs would be covered
City Hall told the Sun late last year that its costs related to Swift will be publicized “in the coming months” – presumably long after McKelvie is gone
spent nearly $2,300 of city money on a Taylor Swift-themed event at the Bentway.)
she was clearly aligned with the downtown councillors close to Chow
she twice voted to change the name of Yonge-Dundas Square to Sankofa
McKelvie was never as important in Toronto as when she temporarily took over mayoral powers in 2023
after John Tory resigned over an at-work affair
much as she had pledged years before to not seek a fourth term on council
She cultivated the image of a sensible politician
McKelvie largely voted with the pack on budget day each year
although she did back a handful of failed proposals
including attempts to hike TTC fares in both 2024 and 2025
In her last full year as a city councillor
her office spent about $36,000 – roughly in the middle of the pack
McKelvie told the Sun her father lives in Ajax and her son attends Durham College
She said her time as a city councillor has involved business with Durham Region
and through the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and bodies such as the Association of Municipalities of Ontario
It seems there’s no plan yet for filling McKelvie’s council roles
which include serving as chairman of the infrastructure and environment committee and the Toronto Zoo’s board of management
told the Sun a report will soon come before council “on next steps for the vacant seat in Scarborough-Rouge Park.”
“I want to congratulate Jennifer McKelvie on her election,” Chow said
“and thank her for her exceptional service to Torontonians as deputy mayor and during her time assuming responsibilities as mayor.”

Mayor Shaun Collier and resident Tyler Hunting discuss the “Red Bricks” redevelopment project at an Ajax council meeting
Residents fear for their future once they have to move
The owner of the property plans to demolish the affordable housing in Ajax
An Ajax resident wants the town to consider a heritage designation for the “Red Bricks” apartment buildings
which are slated to be demolished for redevelopment
who will lose his downtown Ajax affordable apartment unit if the plans go ahead
went before council April 22 on behalf of 12 people
“Since receiving the notice of proposed demolition in early April
we are very fearful for our future,” Hunting told council
The buildings contain 36 units and are mostly occupied by seniors
people with disabilities and single families — many of whom use a local food bank
He added 11,000 people are waiting for affordable housing in Durham Region
“If this development is allowed to go forward
we will join this list and we are afraid many of us will end up homeless,” he said
He understands council does not have a say in whether this development proceeds
due to it meeting official plan and zoning requirements
but he said council can ask the heritage advisory committee to consider designation
The proposal is still subject to a site plan review process and other approvals by town staff required for the redevelopment to move forward
Hunting noted the buildings were constructed before the town was incorporated
The town’s webpage dedicated to the redevelopment project said the Red Bricks were developed by Dell Construction in 1953
one of the earliest purpose-built rental development projects in Ajax
which is operating as Kingscourt Holdings (Ajax) Ltd.
has owned the property since the late 1960s
The page also noted the buildings do not offer modern comforts such as air conditioning or accessible units
what’s important is keeping a roof over everybody’s head
Brosko’s heritage statement says the buildings have “been deemed to have heritage value or interest but have not been officially designated under the OHA or included on the Town of Ajax Heritage Register as designated cultural heritage resources.”
Hunting noted the town’s planning heritage resource page states a building must meet one or more criteria to be considered for heritage designation
the Ontario Heritage Act states it must meet two requirements
Mayor Shaun Collier said he doesn’t expect to see shovels in the ground for another two years
“I do believe that even if they did look at it today
since the application has already been made and this is already in site plan
director of planning and development services
He added the land has been designated in the town’s official plan for redevelopment for at least 20 years
Brosko has committed to making 10 per cent of the new units affordable under Canada Mortgage and Housing Coalition guidelines
Collier said he has asked Brosko whether the new affordable units would be offered to current residents and if more affordable housing could be provided
saying Brosko has other properties in Toronto and is looking to see if people are interested in relocating there
“I want you and the other people here to understand we are listening,” Collier said
He reiterated these are simply suggestions and it will be up to the property owner to follow through
the town and residents will have a meeting on May 1

equity and inclusion are hot topics in the upcoming federal election
The News Advertiser had two questions on the topics for the candidates running in the Ajax riding
Canadians are generally very peaceful and accommodating people
Emphasizing our values against all forms of hatred and encouraging our togetherness to grow as a nation of peace loving and peace spreading people who take care of each others’ needs irrespective of physical
cultural or religious biases and background
What we’ve seen from Canadians from coast to coast to coast over the past months is nothing short of extraordinary
We’ve come together in defence of our sovereignty
Part of celebrating our heritage is recognizing our history as a cultural mosaic
The country we now call Canada has always been made up of different nations
cultures and ethnicities; it is one of the things Canada is best known for
talent and prosperity we gain from cultural exchange gives us better insight
a stronger economy and prepares us to face the challenges of today
fair and open Canada we fight for inclusivity: indeed
We must stand together as citizens of one nation of peace and inclusion and understand that the laws of this great nation apply to each citizen equally
Canadians come from hundreds of different backgrounds
and the multicultural tapestry of Canada is a shining example of the progress we can make when we work together
We need to encourage policies that create an even playing field
and break down the barriers that exist for some
diversity and inclusion initiatives and apply that practice to all aspects of my life
Having a diversity of ideas and experiences means increasing our ability to innovate
I will bring this same approach as a representative of Ajax
Conservative Party of Canada candidate Greg Brady and Canada’s NDP candidate Kyle Forster did not provide responses to the questions
