A 30-year-old man is facing more than a dozen charges in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a 14-year-old. Durham police say they began an investigation on April 30 after receiving information from police in Hamilton that a young teen had been sexually assaulted and forcibly confined in the Ajax area. “The suspect picked up the 14-year-old victim in Hamilton and drove her to Ajax, where she was confined and sexually assaulted over a period of days,” police said in a statement. On May 2, 30-year-old Gowryshankar Kathirkamanathan of Ajax was taken into custody. He is facing a total of 15 charges, including five counts of sexual assault, five counts of sexual interference, forcible confinement, uttering threats and assault. Police say Kathirkamanathan and the 14-year-old victim were known to each other through a mutual connection, but did not provide any further details about the relationship. Her last months on council were not her brightest McKelvie’s name was attached to two high-profile – and doomed – proposals in 2025: the creation of an aboriginal city councillor and the takeover of an arena’s administration The Indigenous councillor concept came from the city’s aboriginal affairs advisory committee and was essentially rejected by the city’s executive committee in March no councillors spoke at the meeting about the idea and it’s unclear how such a position was intended to function telling the committee the concept of an unelected councillor would be “undemocratic More baffling was McKelvie’s choice to second a motion by Councillor Chris Moise to remove almost all of the board of Moss Park Arena and replace them with a group of people that appeared to include some of his political donors said the motion McKelvie seconded “should never have been here on the floor of this council.” Most Torontonians likely know McKelvie best for filling in as mayor McKelvie’s most recent moment in the political spotlight was her star turn on Taylor Swift Way McKelvie brought forward a member’s motion to temporarily rebrand a downtown route between Toronto City Hall and the Rogers Centre as Taylor Swift Way and even brought a custom T-shirt to the council floor to drum up excitement McKelvie said the costs of the ceremonial street signs would be covered City Hall told the Sun late last year that its costs related to Swift will be publicized “in the coming months” – presumably long after McKelvie is gone spent nearly $2,300 of city money on a Taylor Swift-themed event at the Bentway.) she was clearly aligned with the downtown councillors close to Chow she twice voted to change the name of Yonge-Dundas Square to Sankofa McKelvie was never as important in Toronto as when she temporarily took over mayoral powers in 2023 after John Tory resigned over an at-work affair much as she had pledged years before to not seek a fourth term on council She cultivated the image of a sensible politician McKelvie largely voted with the pack on budget day each year although she did back a handful of failed proposals including attempts to hike TTC fares in both 2024 and 2025 In her last full year as a city councillor her office spent about $36,000 – roughly in the middle of the pack McKelvie told the Sun her father lives in Ajax and her son attends Durham College She said her time as a city councillor has involved business with Durham Region and through the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and bodies such as the Association of Municipalities of Ontario It seems there’s no plan yet for filling McKelvie’s council roles which include serving as chairman of the infrastructure and environment committee and the Toronto Zoo’s board of management told the Sun a report will soon come before council “on next steps for the vacant seat in Scarborough-Rouge Park.” “I want to congratulate Jennifer McKelvie on her election,” Chow said “and thank her for her exceptional service to Torontonians as deputy mayor and during her time assuming responsibilities as mayor.” jholmes@postmedia.com The province wants to help strengthen media companies owned by Black Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) as well as those artists Queen’s Park is supporting the Town of Ajax with $10,000 through the Ontario Creates – CMF IDM Futures Forward Program for Rellow Media Whitby MPP Lorne Coe made the announcement “Our government recognizes the important role that the arts play in fostering dynamic and thriving communities across Ontario,” said Coe “This support will help Rellow Media Incorporated continue to create more opportunities for emerging Black and Indigenous artists to showcase their talent – enriching our community creating good jobs and drawing more visitors to Ajax and other communities across the Region of Durham.” “Ontario’s vibrant and diverse arts and culture industries enrich our lives and boost economic activity,” said Stan Cho “I’m pleased that Rellow Media Incorporated is receiving funding through the Ontario Creates-CMF IDM Futures Forward Program They are helping to ensure Black artists in Ajax have the opportunity to share their art with their community and connect with audiences across the province and beyond.” The Ontario Creates – CMF IDM Futures Forward Program is designed to build the economic capacity of successful new and emerging BIPOC-owned media companies especially those who may face barriers to the mainstream The province says that’s achieved through investment in early-stage project-related development activities for interactive digital media projects Projects that are considered eligible includes web series Ajax 2025 federal election live results.
