Honda Manufacturing of Canada produces the CR-V and Civic in Alliston
Work continues on expansion involving two new plants on the Alliston site
While there are still concerns about how potential tariffs will impact the auto industry
Honda Manufacturing of Canada says it’s continuing to work on a massive expansion
Last April, the provincial and federal governments, along with Honda, announced two new plants for its Alliston site
The $15-billion project will receive $2.5 billion in tax credits
The goal is to start electric vehicle production by 2028
the new plants will create a minimum of 1,000 jobs — in addition to the 4,200 people currently employed at Honda in Alliston — and will be able to produce 240,000 vehicles per year
Work started late last year on the property
which is located adjacent to the current plants
“Site preparations for the new battery and EV plants are progressing
with building designs currently underway,” said Bobbi Curran
obtaining necessary permits and conducting various tests to ensure environmental diligence and minimizing disruption to the community.”
They are working alongside the municipality on the project
“The Town of New Tecumseth has been a valued partner from the very beginning and continues to be deeply invested in the success of our project,” she said
New Tecumseth and Collingwood are partnering on a $270-million expansion of the water treatment plant in Collingwood
which will provide water for both communities
Honda has said its top priority is the more than 4,000 employees at the Alliston campus
which Curran calls their “greatest asset.”
“They form a highly skilled and diverse workforce
hailing from Simcoe County and beyond,” she said
“Many of them are generational employees who have been part of the Honda family for over 35 years
Their unwavering commitment to quality and customer satisfaction has been instrumental in our success
“They know they are valued and appreciated
which fosters a strong sense of loyalty and dedication.”
The facility started producing the Honda Accord in 1986 and has since become the home for the Civic and CR-V
producing more than 10 million vehicles at the plant
Power Gold Plant quality award for the CR-V and the Honda Civic was named the 2025 Canadian Car of the Year by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada
“Our vehicles have consistently been in high demand across North America
driven by our unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction,” she said
“We take pride in our Canadian heritage and are dedicated to producing vehicles that meet customer wants and needs.”

2025 /CNW/ - While Unifor is encouraged that Honda Canada has confirmed its facility in Alliston
will operate at full capacity for the foreseeable future with no changes being considered at this time the union cautions vigilance amid the ongoing threat to Canadian auto jobs posed by U.S
"Automakers making contingency plans around production and investment is exactly what Unifor has warned about," said Unifor National President Lana Payne
"Companies are making decisions based on these tariffs that will have immediate and long-term consequences for Canadian auto workers."
The statement by Honda was issued following reports that Honda is considering shifting production from Canada to the United States in response to U.S
Unifor represents approximately 1,000 members at auto parts suppliers to the Alliston Honda plants in Ontario
While Honda's Canadian assembly workers are currently non-unionized
Unifor continues to advocate on their behalf
"Unifor is fighting for all auto workers in Canada
Supply chain and auto plant jobs support Canadian workers
their families and their communities," Payne added
Although Honda Canada has said that no production changes are currently planned
those decisions ultimately rest with the company's global headquarters and could change at any time
from our experience of dealing with automakers and the industry
we understand better than anyone that assurances from automakers are one thing
but we need a carrot-and-stick approach to ensure accountability," said Payne
"We must develop industrial policy to encourage investment and also implement tough penalties for companies that shift jobs south to appease Trump's agenda."
Unifor has previously called on the federal government to implement tailored counter-tariff measures to defend Canadian jobs
The broader instability in the North American auto sector — amplified by U.S. policy reversals on EV incentives and infrastructure — is already being felt. Ingersoll's CAMI Assembly Plant is facing a loss of 500 jobs in the coming weeks
"We are already seeing the fallout from Trump's chaotic policies," said Payne
"Canada must respond forcefully and strategically to protect our auto sector and its workers."
Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector
representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy
The union advocates for all working people and their rights
fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad
and strives to create progressive change for a better future.

Honda Canada shot down early Japanese reports that it’s planning to move some auto production to U.S
“We can confirm that our Canadian manufacturing facility in Alliston
will operate at full capacity for the foreseeable future.”

Residents breathe a collective sigh as company denies Japanese newspaper report it is shifting some production to the U.S
Alliston could finally exhale after learning that Honda Canada is keeping full production at its local plant “for the foreseeable future.”
The collective sigh of relief came in the wake of a Japanese newspaper report earlier in the day that Honda was considering shifting production to the U.S
Just weeks ahead of the May 3 deadline for his planned auto parts tariff
It was just another day in a global trade war, sparked by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs
“We can confirm that our Canadian manufacturing facility in Alliston
will operate at full capacity for the foreseeable future and no changes are being considered at this time,” the company said Tuesday afternoon
“We constantly study options for future contingency planning and utilize short-term production shift strategies when required
to mitigate negative impacts on our business.”
“This is really a Honda town,” said Neil Garbe
chief administrative officer of New Tecumseth
the local municipality about an hour north of Toronto of which Alliston is a part
“Anyone who supplies Windsor and Warren isn’t working right now,” said Flavio Volpe
The 4,200 people employed at the Honda assembly and engine plants are just a part of the company’s local impact
event organizers and even the area hospital’s expansion plans have benefited from the Japanese auto giant’s presence since 1986
“It touches every part of the community,” said Garbe
The entire town of New Tecumseth has a population of 43,000
with just over 23,000 of that in Alliston itself
Like other Ontario communities with a big auto industry presence
it has been a nerve-wracking few months in the area
with a fast-moving global trade war potentially having such devastating local impacts
“It just creates a lot of uncertainty for everyone.”
the uncertainty has had a chilling effect on what was widely expected to be a hot spring real estate market
“People fear the unknown,” said Frank Gray Jr.

For small business owners like Frances Pruim
the Trump chaos has been anything but helpful
Pruim said there’s no point being anxious all the time
“Worrying is not going to change anything,” says Pruim
“I think that you just need to carry on and hopefully come through with some calmness.”
A Japanese newspaper said Honda was considering moving some of its auto production to the U.S
Nikkei first reported that Honda was considering the shift as it aims to produce 90 per cent of its cars sold in the U.S
The report sparked an outcry at Queen’s Park and on the federal campaign trail
Ontario premier Doug Ford vowed to keep Honda in the province
and said the company is already maxed out in the U.S
“They’re at 100 per cent capacity right now (stateside),” he said Tuesday
“We’re going to keep Honda here and I’ll do everything I can to protect the people and their jobs.”
The head of Canada’s Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association said Honda likely wouldn’t need to lay off workers
even if it shifted production of its CRV from Alliston to the U.S.
“They could move the CRV and still be committed to the Civic,” said Flavio Volpe
estimating that the Alliston plant produces 400,000 vehicles per year
Honda has a long history of keeping its workers around
“Honda has never in any of these crises pulled back or laid off any workers,” said Volpe
who suggested that Honda and Toyota have stronger financial foundations than their North American rivals
The president of Global Automakers of Canada (GAC)
“They’ve never laid off a worker in Canada,” said David Adams
autoworkers in Canada aren’t exactly out of the woods yet
the country’s largest private sector union
All five of the companies which produce vehicles in Canada are still mulling the impact of Trump’s trade war
“I can say knowing these companies that there are a bunch of contingency plans on boardroom tables now
And none of them are good for Canadian workers,” Payne warned
And we are going to continue to fight hard
If these companies want to sell in Canada they are going to have to build in Canada.”

Trump imposed a 25 per cent tariff on all cars and light trucks imported to the U.S
He also announced imported automotive parts would face a tariff no later than May 3
but mused this week that he might consider delaying the parts tariff
American officials have also said there will be a partial exemption for cars made with parts from the U.S.
although it’s still not entirely clear how that will work
Prime Minister Mark Carney said the Trump tariffs “will rupture the global economy and adversely
Canada retaliated in kind
with a 25 per cent tariff on American-made cars imported to Canada
federal finance minister François-Philippe Champagne announced that auto manufacturers will be allowed to import a certain number of U.S.-assembled vehicles free of the counter-tariffs
Champagne didn’t reveal each company’s individual quota for the exemption
but said it will drop if there are reductions in their Canadian production or investment
auto industry insiders have predicted that tariffs could mean most of North America’s highly integrated auto sector could grind to a halt
The Nikkei report comes as Honda Manufacturing of Canada says it’s continuing to work on a massive expansion of its Canadian operations that includes two new plants dedicated to electric vehicle and battery manufacturing at its Alliston site
The $15-billion project — which has the support of the federal and Ontario governments — is expected to create at least 1,000 new jobs
It also came as Japan’s chief trade negotiator is set to visit the U.S

The Ontario government is investing almost $14.5 million in this preliminary phase
This funding announced Thursday builds on the $7.5 million the province previously committed to support early planning for the redevelopment
(SMH) has provided health-care support for families in Alliston,” said Simcoe-Grey MPP Brian Saunderson
This capital grant is another important step towards the end goal of enhancing health care in the region.”
SMH currently offers 38 inpatient beds and a wide range of outpatient services
it serves nearly 40,000 patients living in Adjala-Tosorontio
The expansion will include nine additional acute-care beds
It’ll also feature a new emergency department that is triple the current size and that includes a separate entrance and enclosed ambulance bays. New suites will more than double the size of the surgical department
“Ontario’s investment in (SMH) is a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare services in New Tecumseth and Simcoe County,” New Tecumseth Mayor Richard Norcross said
This is an exciting time for our community
and I look forward to seeing the positive impact this redevelopment will have on the health and well-being of our residents while also connecting more people to the care they need and deserve.”
The new facility will wrap around the current hospital building
A number of other clinical areas will be expanded and enhanced
obstetrics (birthing unit), pharmacy, and medical device reprocessing
Its design features significant use of natural light
and new and refreshed gardens and green spaces.
This facility “will ensure patients and families in New Tecumseth and surrounding areas can continue to connect to the high-quality care they need in their growing community for generations,” the hospital says.
Patients and visitors can expect an increased volume of trucks and construction equipment on the hospital property throughout 2025.
Hospital programs and services will continue to operate as normal
though parking may be affected at certain stages
The hospital advises that patients with mobility limitations be dropped off at the main entrance
the province will work with SMH to issue the request for proposals to tender this project
