The northern lights will likely be visible to several states along the Canadian border on Monday night
after recent geomagnetic storms made the phenomenon more visible
according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Some minor to moderate radio blackouts are also expected this week
The NOAA forecast auroral activity with a Kp index of three on a scale of nine
meaning the northern lights will likely move farther from the poles and be “quite pleasing to look at” for anyone in the right areas
The Kp index may increase up to nearly four
which could make the northern lights visible in parts of South Dakota and Maine
There is a chance for some minor to moderate radio blackouts through Wednesday
indicating some high-frequency radio communications could be impacted
A view line marking a minimal opportunity sweeps just below the Canadian border
suggesting the northern lights will have a low chance of appearing in northeastern Washington
Most of Alaska and northern Canada will have a higher chance
high vantage point will likely be the best spot to observe the northern lights
turning off flash and lowering the camera’s shutter speed
photography experts told National Geographic it’s best to use a wide-angle lens
an F-stop or aperture of four or less and a focus set to the furthest possible setting
This peak will likely persist into early 2026
meaning the northern lights should consistently be more visible in more states
The strongest geomagnetic storm in two decades impacted Earth in May 2024
which pulled the northern lights as far south as northern Florida and Texas

11:52am EDTShareSaveCommentThe Northern Lights appear in the sky during a geomagnetic storm on October 10
which is predicting geomagnetic activity that could result in aurora being glimpsed in as many as 11 U.S
states have a chance of seeing the aurora on the northern horizon on Sunday night
with Alaska and those on the U.S.-Canada border having the highest chance
Areas far from light pollution are likely to get the best views
If your smartphone has a “Night Mode” feature
that should be good enough to get a more than impressive souvenir shot of the aurora
It likely means a long exposure of between five and 10 seconds
which will look much better if you do three things:
exciting them and causing them to release energy as light
Geomagnetic storms and aurora are expected to continue through 2025 and 2026
A small group of states along the northern U.S
border will have a shot at seeing the northern lights Saturday night
with forecasters predicting a minor showing of auroral activity expected to increase later this weekend

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasts a Kp index of three on a scale of nine for Saturday night
meaning the aurora will move further from the poles and produce more movement and formations
The viewing line for Saturday’s northern lights stretches as low as the border between North Dakota and South Dakota
with chances of seeing aurora borealis increasing the farther north of the line viewers are located
Those who do not catch a look at the northern lights Saturday will have another chance to try Sunday
when the viewing line is forecasted to drop further south and the Kp index increases to four
Areas within Saturday’s viewing line include the northern tip of Idaho
northern Wisconsin and Michigan’s upper peninsula
The states have a low chance at seeing the lights
North Dakota and Minnesota having the best chances (see map below)
The best viewing hours for the northern lights are between 10 p.m
Viewers can increase their visibility by observing from places with high vantage points
little to no light pollution and clear skies
Night mode and low shutter speeds on smartphones can help observers with capturing the northern lights through photos
as well as the use of tripods for image stability
Traditional cameras should use high ISO values
wide apertures and wide-angle lenses to snap photos of the northern lights
Aurora borealis is created through solar flares and coronal mass ejections
types of solar events that interact with oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the Earth’s atmosphere
Electrons interact with the molecules and become “excited” before producing the auroral phenomenon
Northern lights activity hit a peak last year as the sun’s surface reached a “solar maximum.” The activity of the natural phenomenon has been consistent in 2025 and could last into next year

“Aurora has never had a competition like this before."
“I've run little mini competitions out of my school
Aurora has never hosted a major martial arts event,” he said
they didn't really have a facility that could handle it
The event is being hosted out of the newly opened Desjardins Gymnasium in the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex
“As soon as I saw that thing going up
‘That's got to be it,’” said Wakefield.
The event will see more than 200 athletes competing in several different martial arts events

“Wushu is a martial art like you would say gymnastics
there are different disciplines or events,” he said
Participants will compete in non-combative
called "taolu," while there will also be combative events
known as "sanda," a Chinese form of kickboxing
which Wakefield said “bridges traditional martial arts with modern sport combat.”
The event will feature youth and adult competitors from across the province and some from beyond
with the event acting as a qualifier for future higher-level competitions
including selecting athletes to represent Canada at future events like the Pan American Championships
The event also acts as part of an "initial pathway" to qualifying for the Youth Olympic Games
with Wushu now an official sport for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar
Wakefield said as well as a sporting achievement
with Tang and Wakefield working with local body Sport Aurora to organize the event
the event is an important cultural showcase of traditional Chinese Gong-fu or Kung Fu
especially with martial arts being such a prevalent activity within the town
there's a lot of martial arts here,” said Wakefield
“So I can see the floodgates opening and all martial arts activities starting to have events
I like to see it as like we're breaking new ground.”
The 2025 Ontario Martial Arts Championships are happening at the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex on May 24 to 25 from 10 a.m
Tang said the organization is looking for local volunteers to help with the event

In over four years of supervised pilot hauls
the Aurora Driver has delivered over 10,000 customer loads across three million autonomous miles
last week launched a commercial self-driving trucking service in Texas
The deployment will provide autonomous freight transportation between Dallas and Houston
Aurora’s flagship product, the Aurora Driver, is an SAE Level 4 self-driving system that the company is first deploying in long-haul trucking
the Aurora Driver has completed more than 1,200 miles without a driver
This latest milestone is the first time that Aurora will operate a commercial self-driving service with heavy-duty trucks on public roads
“We founded Aurora to deliver the benefits of self-driving technology safely
we are the first company to successfully and safely operate a commercial driverless trucking service on public roads,” stated Chris Urmson
“Riding in the back seat for our inaugural trip was an honor of a lifetime – the Aurora Driver performed perfectly
Urmson, Sterling Anderson, and Drew Bagnell founded Aurora in 2017. The Pittsburgh-based company designed its Aurora Driver to operate with multiple vehicle types
from freight-hauling trucks to ride-hailing passenger vehicles
and detecting pedestrians in the dark hundreds of meters away
Aurora added that its Verifiable AI approach to autonomy blends learning models with “guardrails” to help ensure the rules of the road are followed
Verifiable AI also played a role in enabling Aurora to close its driverless safety case
Aurora’s launch trucks include the Aurora Driver hardware kit and redundant systems including braking
enabling them to safely operate without a human driver
The truck platform was validated and approved by Aurora for driverless operations on public roads
Aurora believes working with manufacturing partners is the only way to deploy self-driving trucks at scale, and continues to make progress with its partners on purpose-built driverless platforms designed for high-volume production. The company plans to share more details about its launch and ongoing commercial operations at its upcoming first-quarter business review
Aurora is working with industry leaders across the transportation ecosystem
The company said it hopes to expand its driverless service to El Paso
Aurora’s launch customers are Uber Freight
a market-leading enterprise technology company powering intelligent logistics
a veteran-owned carrier that delivers time- and temperature-sensitive freight
Both companies have had long-standing supervised commercial pilots with Aurora
Aurora also released a Driverless Safety Report
which included details about the Aurora Driver’s operating domain for initial operations along with its approach to cybersecurity
safety-focused approach to delivering autonomous technology has always given me confidence they’re doing this the right way,” said Richard Stocking
“Transforming an old school industry like trucking is never easy
but we can’t ignore the safety and efficiency benefits this technology can deliver
Autonomous trucks aren’t just going to help grow our business – they’re also going to give our drivers better lives by handling the lengthier and less desirable routes.”
Aurora said it prioritizes consistent transparency and collaboration with elected officials
Entities that were briefed on the Aurora Driver’s readiness for driverless operations included:
Trucking is a trillion-dollar industry in the U.S.
including an aging driver population with high turnover rates
making the value proposition of autonomy – a solution that will offer safe
reliable capacity without an impact on jobs – highly attractive to the trucking industry
states today allow for driverless vehicles
the industry has been slow to make progress
Through its partnership with Atlas Energy Solutions
the company said driverless trucks have surpassed 750 hours of commercial driverless operations without a human driver on board
it secured a firm commitment from Atlas to order an initial 100 trucks
Also in April, Gatik received a successful independent review for the Safety Case Evaluation and Functional Safety phases of its Safety Assessment Framework from TÜV SÜD
It claimed that this third-party assessment was the first of its kind and that it marks a significant milestone toward the commercialization of self-driving freight operations

after she didn’t attend one of her baby showers last month
There’s a major fumble in the Culpo sisters’ communication
Aurora Culpo revealed that she and sister Olivia Culpo, 32—who’s expecting her first child with husband Christian McCaffrey—briefly bumped heads after she didn’t attend one of her latest baby showers

The 35-year-old—mom to Remi, 6, and Solei, 4, with ex-husband Michael Bortone—wasn’t offended by her sister’s suggestion, as she originally planned to sit out the smaller baby shower because she needed to rest. But once their other sister Sophia Culpo
I do everything for you guys and you do nothing for me,’” the Barely Filtered host recalled
“I just kept sending her the screenshot where she was like
Despite Olivia’s loaded response, Aurora and her younger sister are back on speaking terms. But that olive branch hasn’t been extended to Sophia, as the Model Squad star hasn’t spoken to her in “three weeks.”
While Sophie hasn’t publicly addressed her and Olivia’s feud
Aurora hopes her sisters will bury the hatchet soon
but I think she’s gonna get over it,” she continued of Olivia
because she’s gonna have a baby soon and she’s gonna want some help.”

A group of states along the Canadian border may have an opportunity to see the northern lights on Friday
with some radio blackouts expected through the weekend
Some radio blackouts are also possible through the weekend
The NOAA forecast auroral activity with a Kp index of four on a scale of nine
suggesting the northern lights will be visible farther away from the poles and be “quite pleasing to look at” for observers in the right areas
It’s likely the northern lights will be as visible through Sunday
with a maximum Kp index of three forecast for Saturday and Sunday
Some minor to strong radio blackouts are possible through the weekend as well
as some high-frequency radio communications may be disrupted as there’s a chance for solar flares
Upper Michigan and Maine have a low chance of seeing the northern lights
Most of Alaska and northern Canada will have a higher likelihood of viewing the phenomenon

A peak for northern lights displays was reached in October 2024
as activity on the sun’s surface achieved a “solar maximum,” NASA and NOAA said
This peak was reached months after NASA said the strongest geomagnetic storm in two decades impacted Earth
bringing aurora borealis as far south as Texas and northern Florida
Aurora borealis is the product of electrons from solar events—solar flares and coronal mass ejections—interacting with molecules of oxygen and nitrogen in Earth’s atmosphere
These electrons become “excited” before releasing the swirling lights of the aurora
A peak in activity on the sun’s surface will likely persist into early 2026
as the northern lights continue to be more visible to more people
Thursday may be the last day people in the northern U.S
suggesting the northern lights will move farther from the poles and be “quite pleasing to look at” in about eight states
Thursday will likely be the last opportunity to see the northern lights this week
as a Kp index of just over two is forecast for Friday and Saturday
Strong solar flares are expected through Saturday
meaning there may be some disruptions to high-frequency radio communications
Alaska and northern Canada will have a chance to see the northern lights
while a view line marking a minimal opportunity sweeps through southern Minnesota
Upper Michigan and northern Wisconsin will also have a low likelihood of viewing the phenomenon
NOAA recommends traveling to a north-facing
high vantage point away from light pollution to see the northern lights
which the agency said are best seen between 10 p.m

Germany’s POLARIS Spaceplanes is preparing to attempt a key milestone in its development of in-flight refuelling capabilities for its AURORA multipurpose spaceplane and hypersonic transport system
AURORA is an uncrewed platform designed for hypersonic flight testing and
with the addition of an expendable upper stage
capable of deploying satellites into orbit
the vehicle will be powered by four turbofan engines
When conducting hypersonic testing or launching payloads into orbit
AURORA’s two aerospike engines will be fired
POLARIS is currently planning to begin operational flights of AURORA in 2028
POLARIS Spaceplanes announced that Germany’s Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment
Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) had backed the development of an in-flight refuelling capability
This capability would extend AURORA’s operational range and boost its maximum payload capacity
the company announced that it had received approval from the country’s Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport to begin a seven-month flight testing campaign over the Baltic Sea
This testing included two small demonstrators
developed as progressively larger testbeds for key technologies required by AURORA
testing has included dozens of automated close-proximity formation flights
POLARIS is now preparing for its first docking experiments
The primary aim of the experimentation is to develop the technology that will enable the refuelling of AURORA’s kerosene tank

Aurora and most of York Region are awakening to a Liberal government
but will be represented by a Conservative MP following last night's election
Newmarket-Aurora Conservative Sandra Cobena won the riding
the first time the riding has not gone with the winning party in five federal elections
Much of York Region similarly voted Conservative, including Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill
with Markham-Stouffville and Markham-Thornhill remaining red
Newmarket Deputy Mayor Tom Vegh offered congratulations on social media
the people are never wrong,” Vegh said
“Congratulations to Sandra Cobena (Conservative) on her decisive win in Newmarket-Aurora
I am looking forward to working with Sandra to make Newmarket and York Region even better.”

former Washington Capitals player and Aurora Tigers owner Jim Thomson reached out to Alexander Ovechkin's agent
asking if he could bring the NHL star a unique gift
While attending a 50th anniversary Capitals alumni event
Thomson presented Ovechkin with a made-in-Aurora custom chair
The gift was warmly received by the current Capitals player
Ovechkin had then asked his agent to ensure the chair would be there when he returned with his truck to pick it up
here he was personally making plans to get it home
The chairs were made by Aurora-based Best Seats in the House
before expanding his business to include the manufacturing of custom chairs and ottomans
incorporating hockey jerseys and leather jackets into the design
Milne said the chairs have proved popular with local hockey stars
including Auroran NHLers Mike Palmateer and Rob Thomas having them
Thomson himself said he has several in his office and is looking to add another to his collection featuring an Aurora Tigers jersey
The pair are also planning to bring another chair to Ovechkin to commemorate his breaking Wayne Gretzky’s long-standing NHL goals record earlier this month
“We talked about breaking the record
so we spent about 10 minutes just chatting about Gretzky
who I played with in L.A.,” said Thomson
“Then he was kind enough to sign me a game-used stick that I put beside my game-used Gretzky stick
Despite having grown up in Edmonton and idolizing Gretzky
and then going on to play alongside him for the Los Angeles Kings
Thomson said he was happy to see Ovechkin break the Great One’s record
so I got to watch him winning Stanley Cups in my hometown and playing with him,” he said
“But Wayne always said this: ‘Records are meant to be broken.’ The fact that it was somebody from the team that I cheer for and drafted me

Emanuel said the national-level race was consistent with pollsters
but there was some surprise with Conservatives outperforming polling projections in York Region
He said the Newmarket-Aurora riding has voted for the losing party before
though this is the first time this has happened since 2006
“It’s not a true bellwether,” he said of the riding
adding that the result “is the pulse of the people and what they’re feeling.”
Emanuel said the Liberal minority government should be able to manage well for at least a year or two
“I’m sure because it was so close
I'm sure (Mark) Carney will be able to cobble together support
What I’m looking forward to most is having this election behind us now
We need to get a deal done with the United States.”
Emanuel said that watching the speeches from the party leaders
there was a positive sign that they could cooperate to address the threat posed but the U.S
“The one thing that’s still very clear
they’re all still very much aligned on making sure Canada is unified on getting a deal with the United States,” he said
“I’m proud that the leader seems united on this
Shakeel said she felt mixed about the results
She said she is happy to see Carney remain prime minister
“That shows that Canadians are choosing to not pick
choosing not to follow the negative rhetoric,” she said
But she said seeing York Region lose six seats to the Conservatives was tough
She noted just three more seats could have got the Liberals a majority
“That’s heartbreaking,” Shakeel said
Shakeel said that they knew it would be a swing riding and a tough fight
she has been working very hard within the riding for quite a while
People wanted change and I understand that
wasn’t resonating with people and it’s just really unfortunate,” Shakeel said
adding that she hopes Cobena “will be an MP who will listen to all of us regardless of what side of the aisle we’re on.”
The new government will need to address the economy and U.S
President Donald) Trump throws our way will be a priority for the government,” she said
“But I think we’re in a really good position to do that with Prime Minister Carney in place
I’m very optimistic about how this is going to play out
there will be a lot of coalition building,” she added
“I think people realize the need to make sure our economy keeps growing and that things do stay stable and get better."
Baxter said he found the election results to be “totally
adding that he feels Carney’s “about to destroy Canada
I’m totally convinced of that.”
Baxter said he was pleased to see Cobena win locally
“She and her husband are two of the finest individuals I’ve ever met,” he said
adding that many like-minded people are looking for something different
“Most of my Conservative friends … absolutely wanted nothing to do with Carney.”
While Baxter said he believes Carney should have taken more blame for issues with the Justin Trudeau government
we would have won in a landslide,” Baxter said
The new government needs to show its allegiance to Canada
adding that he is concerned by Carney’s previous roles internationally as governor of the Bank of England and an envoy to the United Nations
“I could not have anything to do with this man unless he repented and recanted what he’s done to the country in the last four years,” Baxter said
“Not to mention the preceding five or six years.”
Hanna said that while she was glad to see Carney win
it was disappointing that local Liberal Jennifer McLachlan did not
“I was a bit surprised,” Hanna said about the result
that’s my personal opinion … I didn’t hear as much from (Cobena).”
She added that Newmarket-Aurora “has always been a very toss-up riding
She said she is OK with the Liberal government proceeding and she hopes they can focus on issues that matter to her
“Just keep focusing on mental health
and focus on getting more kids wanting to do apprenticeships,” she said
adding there needs to be more advertising around government programs for apprenticeships.

A speedy stream of the solar wind could spark auroras overnight on Tuesday
A stream of particles flowing out of an immense hole in the Sun's atmosphere is set to sweep past Earth
potentially sparking a bright display of the Northern Lights
According to forecasters at NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center
energetic flow of solar particles known as a Coronal Hole High Speed Stream
we may up to G2 (moderate) geomagnetic storm conditions overnight from Tuesday
READ MORE: Geomagnetic storms: When should we look up and when should we worry?
Space weather conditions have already reached G1 (minor) geomagnetic storm levels on Monday due to the effects of Earth crossing this blustery stream of the solar wind
we could see G1 storm levels again during the afternoon on Tuesday
This initial pulse of stormy conditions may be best timed for observers in Atlantic Canada to spot auroras just after sunset
There might be a slight pause before a second round of auroras closer to midnight for eastern Canada or after sunset for western Canada
DON'T MISS: Get to know the hidden gems across Canada
Due to the shape of the aurora 'oval' around Earth
any Northern Lights displays tend to stick to northern regions for the eastern half of Canada — Newfoundland
It takes a geomagnetic storm of strength G3 or higher
Observers across the western half of the country are much more lucky
as auroras from a 'substorm' or even G1 storm can stretch across their skies
G2 storms tend to produce displays of the Northern Lights that can be seen even across the border in the northern United States
Having at least a reasonably clear view of the night sky is essential for getting the most out of a display of the Northern Lights
The maps below shows the forecast cloud conditions across Canada for Tuesday night
Central and northern Ontario appear to be the best places for clear skies during this event
southeastern Manitoba and southern Alberta should have the clearest skies Tuesday night
there is an immense hole in the Sun's atmosphere that is rotating past Earth
and it represents an area of the Sun's surface where the magnetic fields have opened up a large gap

READ MORE: How do the Northern Lights shine? Here's the science behind auroras
The Sun constantly loses charged particles into space
which flow out through the solar system as the 'solar wind'
is a much more energetic 'current' of particles
which is sweeping through interplanetary space like the blade of a pinwheel around the Sun
This is what space weather scientists call a Coronal Hole High Speed Stream (CH HSS)
the CH HSS causes a spike in the number of high-energy solar particles flowing past our planet
If the conditions in that stream are just right
it will form magnetic connections with Earth's geomagnetic field
opening up a fast-track for the particles in the stream to flow down into the planet's atmosphere
The disturbance to Earth's geomagnetic field due to these connections is what we call a geomagnetic storm
It's the solar particles interacting with atoms and molecules in the air that produce the light shows known as the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights (and their southern counterparts
An idealized representation of Earth's geomagnetic field is shown here
and drawn out into a long 'tail' on the anti-sunward side (right)
White solar particles are trapped by the field
which then funnel down to produced auroras
When those particles encounter oxygen and nitrogen in the air
they pass on their energy to those atoms and molecules
The oxygen and nitrogen then release the excess energy as flashes of light — atomic oxygen emits red
and molecular nitrogen emits blue — with different colours mixing together to produce shades of purple

Update, April 16, 2025: Earth is experiencing a strong G3 level geomagnetic storm and Northern Lights are possible tonight “deep into mid latitudes,” according to Space.com
As a result of a CME — a cloud of supercharged particles from the sun —arriving at Earth
a geomagnetic storm rated between G1 and G3 could result
A G3 geomagnetic storm is classified as “strong” and can lead to auroras appearing at lower latitudes
That would mean auroras in Canada and northern-tier U.S
states that could see the northern lights on Wednesday are Alaska
with more northerly states having a much better chance of witnessing a display
While a G3 geomagnetic storm was issued for Wednesday — due to the arrival of multiple coronal mass ejections that left the sun on April 13 — G1 geomagnetic storming conditions are likely to persist into Thursday
A G1 geomagnetic storm is rated as minor in intensity and doesn't typically cause aurora in the U.S
2024 — the most powerful since 2003 — saw aurora as far south as Florida
The Kp index — which provides a rough guide to the intensity of aurora displays — may reach 6
which will see the auroral oval stretch farther south
the aurora can be “bright and active,” and it may be “possible to see the aurora from the northern edge of the United States.”

The Northern Lights sometimes occur when charged particles from the sun — carried on the solar wind — interact with Earth’s magnetic field
creating luminous displays in the upper atmosphere as particles get excited
unleashing eight M-class solar flares between Friday and Monday
While solar flares themselves don’t directly cause auroras
they often set the stage for them by stirring up solar storms
these solar flares didn't come from sunspots — dark patches on the sun's surface indicating intense magnetic activity— but magnetic filaments detaching from the sun
they still resulted in the two CMEs responsible for this week's aurora displays

Apartment buildings with a combined 948 units took another step toward approval
as Aurora council endorsed a proposed zoning amendment at its April 8 committee of the whole meeting
The amendment would allow four 12-storey multi-unit apartment buildings to be built at the corner of Wellington Street and Industrial Parkway
is proposing the four buildings on a 2.68-acre plot at 180 Wellington St
which previously housed Aurora Tire and Wheel and the Royal Wood Shop.
The majority of the 948 units would be one-bedroom
The proposal came before council during a public planning meeting in October
Councillor Wendy Gaertner had concerns about the density
as well as the proposed reduction in amenity space and the number of visitor parking spaces
if we put an extra 2,000 minimum residents in this area
there’s going to be never-ending complaints to the councillors that are sitting at this table,” she said.
Other councillors were largely in favour of the development
with Councillor Rachel Gilliland saying she thought it “was a perfect location” for it
noting it falls within Aurora’s Major Transit Station Area
which is intended for denser forms of development
“You’re surrounded by a lot of great plusses
I just feel like this is the right kind of development for this site," she said. "And I certainly don’t want to be standing in the way from holding up any development that’s going to end up putting shovels in the ground faster
to allow that opportunity for residents to have a place to live in our town."
Planning director Marco Ramunno said the town had received largely positive comments from residents at public information sessions
The area around the Aurora GO Station on Wellington Street is set to be a major focus for densification in Aurora in the coming years, with several large developments at various stages of approval
One green-lit project is a seven-storey, 193-unit apartment building on Centre Street
which was approved by council in the summer
The Ontario Land Tribunal approved zoning amendments for two other apartment building developments near the train station
and 26-38 Berczy St. Council discussed giving the developers behind those projects rental housing incentives
but ultimately against recommending the motion
It will come to a future council meeting for a final vote

Some local voters expressed disappointment that the only all-candidates event in their riding featured only one candidate
Newmarket-Aurora Liberal Jennifer McLachlan sat alone at the candidates table on stage for a forum hosted by a grassroots group of organizers at the Newmarket Legion April 15
Conservative candidate Sandra Cobena and NDP Anna Gollen were not in attendance
More than 50 people attended to watch as McLachlan fielded questions on topics
both provided prior to the event and impromptu from the audience.
said the evening became more of a discussion of the Liberal platform without other candidates present.
“I'm not feeling good about the Conservative candidate not showing up,” he said
but critically … This is the only way to find solutions ...
A grassroots group of predominantly Christians organized the event
Organizer and moderator Jeremy Paulus said invitations went out after Elections Canada confirmed the candidate list April 9
Cobena had declined the invitation by saying she had a scheduling conflict
He said he was unable to reach Gollen but did get a response from a party press secretary who declined on Gollen’s behalf due to a conflict
He said he sent both candidates questions and offered to read their answers during the debate
but did not receive a reply from either as of 3 p.m
Paulus said organizers wanted to hold the event before advance voting begins this Friday and to not conflict with leaders’ debates happening this week
“We felt in the community that it’s best everyone has the right to hear from local candidates' perspectives,” he said
“I know and recognize this was put on pretty quickly
McLachlan said she wished her colleagues had attended
“I do think it’s very important
for each one of us to give our positions,” she said
“I appreciate you staying and listening to little ol’ me here.”
Multiple attendees expressed disappointment with only one candidate being in attendance
“I wanted to hear all the candidates … I just want to meet them
hear what they’re talking about,” Heather Clucas said
“It was disappointing because I want to hear all three.”
Doug Hoskin said events like this are supposed to be a way to better know candidates
“It’s different than seeing a canned video or a written statement
I have the feeling that I can get to know them a tiny bit,” he said.
said it is a chance to see what a person would do at the local riding level versus the bigger picture from leaders on TV
“I find it somewhat amazing that the other two people did not bother to show up,” he said
“I didn’t get to hear what they had to say
Diane Stevens said she wished that local candidates’ events were more standard
and funded by a body like Elections Canada
“You can gather the character of the people running more easily when you’re able to watch facial expressions
and when some of the questions are spontaneous and have to be answered right on the spot,” she said
“It’s disappointing … I would have enjoyed seeing all the candidates
and I respect the people who organized this as well
seeing something missing and stepping into it
Joe Piech said absenteeism at all-candidates events has become typical for Conservative candidates
Newmarket-Aurora Conservative MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy has not attended an all-candidates event in the last two elections
“How can democracy survive if these people don’t want to debate?” he said.
states may be able to catch the northern lights Saturday night
according to the latest National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecast
The northern lights may be visible in a handful of states Saturday night
NOAA projected Saturday night’s northern lights would have a Kp index of 3
a measure of the aurora’s strength on a scale of 0 to 9
indicating “brighter” lights that may be “quite pleasing to look at” from the right vantage point
which typically increase the strength of the northern lights forecast
A similar northern lights forecast is expected for Sunday night
with about 7 states likely to be able to see an aurora
Most of Alaska is within the projected view line for the northern lights
States with the next best shot at seeing the lights include North Dakota and Minnesota
though other states that fall within the “view line”—the point at which the likelihood of seeing the aurora is lowest—include Idaho
The aurora is most active and visible between 10 p.m
The best way to view the lights is by avoiding light pollution
traveling as far south as possible and finding a high vantage point
the camera app’s night mode can help make the lights more visible
Other tactics that can help produce a better image include using an aperture value of 4.0 or lower and adding details to the image by capturing trees
the strongest of the sun’s current cycle so far
producing a strong northern lights forecast
NASA scientists said they expect strong aurora activity to continue throughout this year before declining in the latter part of the decade
