It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband
Ward passed away suddenly at the age of 56 on January 20th 2025
He leaves behind to cherish the memories of a life beautifully lived
sisters-in-law; Pam (Justin) and Sherry (Walter)
Ward grew up in Bay Roberts beating around on his dirt bike between ballgames and hockey practices
Little else mattered in those younger days
as those were the places he felt most alive
Guarded by the love of his 2 sisters and parents – he was invincible
You needed only to be in his presence for a moment
It was that confidence that future teammates would come to depend on
and a girl he coached in fastpitch ball one summer 40 years ago (who he was consistently exasperated with
for performing backflips out in left field) would someday down the road
His university days were spent at Field Hall where he met a group of guys to share in his zest for winning
who were all to ready for any adventures they cooked up
Many of them would become lifelong friends and one in particular (Sean Dowden) would eventually stand at his wedding as his best man
Ward graduated with a degree in History & English and his love of history would stay with him his entire life
Ward never much liked rules and that didn’t change as the years passed by
The surest way to get him to do something was to tell him he wasn’t allowed
He was a fierce defender on and off the ice
a formidable adversary on the mound or at the plate and often the life of the party if he got hold of a microphone at the bar after the game
Ward has played with many ball and hockey teams over the years and many of his teammates were as close as family
if Ward was on your team – he had your back
he bumped into that backflipping girl from the ballfield – all grown up
She told him a joke about a ‘wide mouth frog’ and when he left get a beer she told her friend .
“well he’s not coming back after that!” but he did come back .
There was never any doubt for either of them and in less than a year they were married
But to leave it at that that would be to dismiss 30 years of adventure
the lows and all the moments in between that helped to build a beautiful life
A life that included a home in Torbay and 3 beautiful children
He was a respected Town Councilor in Torbay who truly wanted to make a difference and he did
His moral compass was strong and sure when making decisions in that position and he took so much pride in that role
It goes without saying that Wards achievements and accolades in the sporting world are extensive
But as much as Hockey and Fast Pitch were his passion
his children were his pride and joy – his world
They carry so much of him with them- the very best of him
We had a lot of living left to do and The Big 5 will never be the same
You gave your all – and although there were chapters still left to be written
your story is one for the ages and is etched in the memories of all of those who knew and loved you
You live on within your children and they will carry you forward with them

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Ward’s passing
Condolences thoughts and prayers to Karen and the whole family
It was many years ago when I met both Karen and Ward from my own fastball days
Ward had a love and a passion for the game that I’m sure he also carried with him in many aspects of his life
larger than life and big smile are just a few memories I will always carry of Ward
I never heard anything but a friendly word from Ward
we were saddened to hear of Ward’s passing
Thinking of you during this difficult time
Very sorry to hear of Ward’s passing
I have a lot of great memories of the old softball days in Bay Roberts playing with him
My thoughts and prayers go out to the families
Condolences to the Gosse and Brown families
Thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time
And I am so sorry that you have lost so much with Ward’s passing
I want to offer our sincere condolences to Ward’s beautiful family
We were absolutely speechless by the display of memorabilia set up at the legion today in Ward’s memory: what finer testament to a man’s accomplishments
leadership and love of life than what we saw here today
I happened to be walking by the room full of people today when Wade’s youngest daughter was bravely giving her speech
You could hear a pin drop: she was talking about the wonderful 15 years she had with him but that they weren’t enough
She mentioned how her dad talked about the thousands of people we all meet in a lifetime: but he had the privilege of meeting so many more
God bless you all; we were so happy to be a part of Ward’s Celebration of Life
Sending Wards family our condolences and prayers
I’ve known Ward for many years and played hockey from time to time with him and against him
He was a true competitor and on the other hand a true gentleman
One thing I can guarantee you is that his name will be in many conversations for many years to come
but felt I did from reading Karen’s Facebook posts about him and their wonderful family
Sam and Makay and all who knew & loved Ward
I was deeply saddened to hear about Ward’s sudden passing
and a sports legend whose impact will live on
One of my favourite memories of him is from when he was a young coach
bravely taking on the challenge of wrangling a group of teenage girls—thank goodness for his sense of humour
We learned so much from him—about softball
he learned a little about patience and how to deal with frustration
He had a remarkable way of bringing out the best in all of us
My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him
and dedication that will live on in the lives he touched
To the Gosse & Brown families… sending our deepest sympathy at this very difficult time
Please know that you’re all in our thoughts & prayers
Janet & family Deepest condolences to you all
thinking of you at this difficult time Dave & Myra
our sincere sympathy over Ward’s sudden and unbelievable passing
May all the special memories you treasure of Ward help you through this very difficult time
My sympathy to the family on Ward’s passing
Sincere condolences to Karen and the Gosse family
from high school classes together as well as in residence at university,
He was always carefree and outgoing and was truly loved by friends and teammates
As a minor softball coach out of Placentia in the 1970.s
no path to a provincial title could be taken it seems without having to get pass the formidable pitching arm and heavy bat of Ward
He was a natural athlete and fierce competitor
We made the mistake one year of not picking Ward up for the Peewee Eastern Canadians being hosted in Brook Cove
The host team seized the opportunity and took him
Ward bet us 1-0 by pitching a gem of a game
I joked with him over the years that my overlooking him gave him the motivation that launched him on his Softball Hall of Fame journey
Truly one of the finest softball players to ever step on a diamond in our province
May he rest in peace and find a game in heaven
I am sorry to hear about Ward’s passing and sending condolences to his family and friends
I was fortunate to get to know him through hockey over the years where we played against each other
We are so sorry to hear of Ward’s passing
Our sincere condolences to his family and friends
I am very sorry to hear of Ward’s sudden passing
and my sincere condolences to Ward’s family and friends
We grew up competing against each other on the ice and I always remember he was a tough opponent to play against but a great friend off the ice
I remember you as a beautiful teenager when we were living in Bay Roberts
I am sorry to hear of Ward’s untimely death
I pray that the love and concern of your family and many friends will help you get through this difficult time
We are saddened and so very sorry to hear of Ward’s passing
Lots of good memories playing ball with him and always enjoyed following him and was very proud of his accomplishments
I played ball hockey with Ward many years ago at MUN
Cherish the wonderful memories and stories you all have at this difficult time.- And May the final words of the obituary stay with you for the difficult weeks and months – you’ve got it from here
Like so many I was shocked and saddened by Ward’s sudden passing
I met Ward on our first day of Kindergarten when we were both 5 years old starting school at Amalgamated Elementary in Bay Roberts – and we quickly became the best of friends
Most of the adventures Karen mentioned Ward had growing up in Bay Roberts – playing minor hockey in the winter
softball in the summer and driving around on our dirt bikes – included me
We were fixtures in each other’s lives and fixtures in each other’s homes
I was lucky enough to spend countless hours with Ward growing up
I had my first slice of Pizza at Ward’s parent’s kitchen table – I was a picky eater and refused to try pizza until I lost a bet to Ward and he made me try it
Ward gave me my first compact disc one year for Christmas – the Beach Boys
I would have sleep overs at Ward’s home and I would be kept up by the Gosse’s dog Dusty
Ward was oblivious to Dusty and didn’t seem to notice
We spent much of our spare time together growing up and I knew that if I was not up in time on a Saturday morning to play street hockey on Cable Avenue or go out on our dirt bikes (our usual dirt bike posse included myself
and Scott Crosbie) Ward simply walked into our house
came upstairs to my bedroom and dragged me out of bed – and no one at my home thought anything of it
My last contact with Ward was an exchange we had over email when I wished him happy birthday last May
We had planned to get together as we had not seen each other in a good while
we both have busy lives and that meeting never happened and now it never will
I had the privilege of meeting him on a sleepover at our home in Deer Lake
Our condolences to all of the family and close friends
Sincere Condolences on Ward’s sudden passing
My thoughts are with you all at this difficult time
We are so deeply sorry for the loss of your beloved son and brother
His light touched so many lives and his memory will continue to shine
No parent should ever have to experience the pain of losing a child
we hope you find strength in the love and support surrounding you all
I grew up watching him on the field playing with my Dad
He has this energy that drew you in and made you feel like he truly cared about you
they are the rare group of friends that have stayed in touch all of these years
Makay and Samuel please accept our sincere condolences on Ward’s sudden passing
Our thoughts are with you at this very difficult time
Very sorry to learn the sad news about the passing away of dear Ward.
I remember him very fondly as my student of Science at Ascension Collegiate
Ward was always full of life with a beautiful smile on his face
He was very kind to all his fellow students and teachers.
We pray to God to give peace to the departed soul and to give strength to Mr & Mrs Grosse
Even though I didn’t know Ward as an adult I certainly knew about him
Michele was one of my best friends and my heart goes out to her
Lewis was one of my high school teachers and had an impact on my life
Condolences to Ward’s family and friends
I enjoyed our chats I had with Ward in the hockey rinks over the years

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Ward’s passing
He and my brother Bo spent many hours together tearing around Bay Roberts on their dirt bikes
More than once they would ditch their bikes and come running into the house because the cops were on their tails

Sending my sincere condolences to his family and friends
Sincere condolences to all of Ward’s family and friends
We are so sorry to hear the news of his passing
You are all in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time
& saddened,.Played against Ward in high school in several sports..Fierce competitor but it was all left on the court, ice or field after the game.,beside his talent this was one of the great things I remember..Coupa years younger then most of the boys at the time & even as a rival he would always notice & acknowledge everyone else’s’ accomplishments..My sincere condolences to his wife, children & family.May you all take comfort in the memories
I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Ward’s sudden passing
May you all take comfort in the beautiful family memories created together throughout the years

You could see his love for his family from a mile away
whether it was spending time with Karen or off to proudly watch one of the kids games

John’s Junior Hockey League'A great news story for junior hockey
for minor hockey and for female hockey in general,' says coach
A piece of junior hockey history is taking place in the St
Bay Roberts goaltender Cassi Slade will be the backup for the Moorfrost CBN Junior Stars when they travel to the D.F
John’s for a matchup with the The Bigs Avalon Junior Celtics
Slade is filling in on the bench for the Stars after one of their regular goaltenders was unavailable for the contest
the Stars would turn to the Tri Pen Osprey of the provincial under-18 Major AAA circuit to fill the void
but they have a game playing the East Coast Blizzard tonight in Harbour Grace
That left the Stars and head coach Nick Saunders to look to one of their affiliated minor hockey associations in Bay Roberts and Harbour Grace for help
As the technical director for the Bay Arena Minor Hockey Association in Bay Roberts
Saunders is very familiar with the talent at that level
Not only is she a member of the Bay Arena’s under-18 Rep 1 team
but she’s a goaltender with the Tri Pen AAA Ice in the provincial under-18 female league
as well as with the Ascension Collegiate girls hockey team
She previously played with the North York Storm in the Ontario West Hockey Association
not only as the head coach of the CBN Stars but as technical director for Bay Arena
I was very familiar with Cassi over the last few weeks and her various tryouts in AAA female and the Bay Arena under-18 team,” said Saunders
I felt she would be the next in line there.”
Saunders reached out to Slade and her parents
both of whom were excited to have the opportunity to join the team for one evening
The move serves as an indication for where female hockey is in the province and the players being produced
ever had the opportunity to coach (female hockey) but often evaluated many teams and seeing the growth that’s happening
not only across our province but the nation … I think it’s a great news story for junior hockey
for minor hockey and for female hockey in general,” said Saunders

When the new minor hockey season arrived at the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts
it was time for Corey Bradbury to keep a family tradition going
His youngest daughter Willa was ready to start minor hockey and Corey knew exactly where to find a jersey for her
white and blue with their last name on the back
It also happens to be 40 years old and once belonged to Corey
it was the continuation of a tradition that has seen that same jersey move from her dad to her older siblings
“It is kind of special to see your child put the jersey on
and then to see their face when they first put on the jersey,” said Corey
The jersey Willa had just hauled over her head is more a family heirloom than a piece of sports clothing
had the jersey made for his son 40 years ago when he was working at the Wescals Department Store
replaced by the Great Canadian Dollar Store
Steve had the jersey with his last name and number ‘00’ pressed
it’s a piece of Bay Roberts jersey history
as it was probably the first one pressed in the town
The jersey came with Corey as he moved from minor hockey in Harbour Grace to the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts
“I was the first group to go to the Bay Arena
and it was time to put it away for something larger
His parents stored it in a box that was out of sight
they dug it out when Corey’s first child Cole was starting minor hockey
it passed from Cole to oldest daughter Campbell and finally to Willa
“It was a great feeling when I first put the jersey on Cole four years ago,” said Corey
“I was just as proud when we put it on Campbell two years ago and happy to see the smiles on Willa’s face as we used the jersey for a third and final time.”
who took ownership of the jersey this year
“(Willa) can’t wait to put it on,” said Corey
because she sees everybody up at the stadium and can’t wait to put it on
This part of the journey for the Bradbury jersey will end when Willa grows out of it and needs to get a new one
Corey will move the jersey from her hockey bag and place it somewhere safe for storage
“I’ll put it away now and try to keep it so maybe one day it can be passed down again for another bunch of firsts,” he said

Three people have been charged in connection with a homicide in Bay Roberts last week.
Stephanie Noftall, 28, and Matthew Kavanagh, 41, both of Harbour Grace, as well as Terry Cole, 34, of Carbonear, were arrested on Saturday evening by the RCMP’s Major Crime Unit. A news conference was held Monday at RCMP headquarters in St. John’s.
At around 7:30 a.m. Sept. 30, police responded to a report of a vehicle fire on Country Road in Bay Roberts. After the fire was extinguished, human remains of a man were found inside. The RCMP announced the death was suspicious and continued with the investigation. In consultation with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner the human remains have been identified as a 42-year-old man from Spaniard’s Bay.
Late last week, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled that the death was a homicide. As part of the ongoing investigation, on Saturday evening, the RCMP, along with the Explosive Disposal Unit, surrounded a home on Gardner Place in Harbour Grace. Residents were asked to shelter in place and the public were asked to avoid the area.
At around 9 p.m., three people were arrested without further incident. Noftall, who was reported missing on Sept. 30, was among the three arrested. Noftall, Kavanagh and Cole are each charged with first-degree murder and indignity to human remains.
The three remain in custody at this time and will attend court in Harbour Grace today. The investigation is continuing.
Police say the crime was initiated in broad daylight with an altercation in the parking lot of Tim Horton’s and Needs Convenience on L.T. Stick Drive in Bay Roberts. Police believe there are a number of witnesses. Officers are looking to speak with anyone who may have been at this location between the hours of 5:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 30, 2024.
Anyone who may have been in this area at this time is asked to check available surveillance footage for a blue 2021 Chevrolet Colorado truck and a 4-door 2012 brownish/grey Honda Civic car, both of which were parked on the parking lot.
RCMPSpaniard's Bay man's remains were found in burnt out truck Sept
— Police say three people arrested after a standoff at a residence in Harbour Grace on Saturday
5 knew the man that they’ve been charged with murdering in broad daylight
and are believed to have been involved in an altercation with him in the hours before his death
The RCMP believes there are people they’ve yet to speak with who witnessed the altercation
which happened in the parking lot of Tim Horton’s and Needs Convenience on L.T
Stick Drive in Bay Roberts sometime between 5:30 a.m
Jolene Garland told reporters at a media briefing Monday
investigators believe the suspects and victim travelled with each other to Country Road
where his body was found in a burning Chevy Colorado truck
It’s believed the man – a 42-year-old from Spaniard’s Bay
whose name police are not releasing at his family’s request – was killed in a targetted attack before the truck was set on fire
multiple detachments and units of the RCMP
surrounded a residence on Gardner Place in Harbour Grace with the three suspects inside
telling them individually through a loudspeaker they were under arrest and directing them to come out the front door with their hands up
After a standoff that lasted nearly three hours
the suspects – 28-year-old Stephanie Noftall and 41-year-old Matthew Kavanagh of Harbour Grace and 34-year-old Terry Cole of Carbonear – surrendered themselves to police
All three have been charged with first-degree murder and committing an indignity to a human body
and appeared in Harbour Grace provincial court Monday afternoon
The next court appearance is scheduled for Oct
The suspects and the victim are known to police
Garland said; one of them is the subject of an arrest warrant
Garland confirmed Noftall is the woman reported missing Sept
30 from the Trinity-Conception area whom the RCMP had issued several public appeals for information over the past week
“We believed that person was missing and we were concerned for her safety and well-being,” Garland said
we had a number of public tips identifying locations where she would have been
we were able to determine later in the week that she had some knowledge about this incident
that she was involved in the crime and it appears that she was evading police.”
The three suspects and the victim knew each other
describing the murder as targeted and potentially drug-related
Police don’t believe at this point that there was anyone else involved
“We certainly feel that there could be an element of drugs,” she said
“We’re not saying that these people were involved in the drug trade
but we do suspect substance abuse to be present within the individuals involved.”
Police say there are no links between this murder and that of 34-year-old Adam Whalen
whose body was found in a burned-out truck in a wooded area of Harbour Grace in April 2023
in which the driver of a black BMW opened fire on another car
hitting it at least five times before speeding away
Police found the suspect vehicle in that case burning in Makinsons later that day
“These crimes have shaken a number of communities and residents of our province
RCMP NL is fully engaged in these investigations and committed to solving these crimes,” Garland said

30 to check their dash camera and CCTV footage for a blue 2021 Colorado truck as well as a 2012 four-door brownish-gray Honda Civic with a noticeably loud exhaust system
The Civic’s last known plate number is JAG 565
and police feel it could be anywhere between Clarenville and St
Anyone with information to assist the investigation is asked to contact RCMP NL’s Major Crime Unit at (709) 772-5433
Garland stressed police have ways to protect the identity of those who provide information if required
She added that Conception Bay North residents can expect a continued police presence in the coming weeks as the investigation unfolds
John's couple have upended their lives to take over a bowling alley and arcade in Bay Roberts"It blended the two things that we have been loving for a long time together"
It was a love story that began in a bowling alley
Both Andrew and Erica Murphy began bowling with Youth Bowl Canada (YBC) at the ages of four and five
at a bowling competition in Quebec when they were 24
the pair packed everything up and drove across the country to move to St
both have dreamed of owning a bowling alley
“We looked at a couple of bowling alleys in town a few years ago
and we decided it wasn’t the best time to dive into something like that,” added Erica
But now the pair are living their dream after making the spontaneous decision a month ago to sell their home in St
John’s and move themselves and their two kids to Bay Roberts to take over a bowling alley
The opportunity to buy Old Mill Lanes arose after the previous owner
we might think what could have happened,” said Erica
It’s the same thing as when we met each other and drove across the country
that all happened within a couple of weeks,” added Andrew
said that one night at work she was scrolling Facebook and saw that Old Mill Lanes was for sale
“We had no intentions of moving at all,” said Erica
As a family that spends lots of time together
But after discussing logistics and not wanting to have regrets
There was another major selling point: the establishment boasted a full arcade setup
built by the previous owner before the pandemic
“It blended the two things that we have been loving for a long time together,” said Erica
Andrew has gone viral on TikTok for his interest in arcade games
He’s posted many videos of him winning iPads and Apple Watches from various claw machines
It’s gotten to the point where creating content is what he does full-time
but any stationary sport I am good at; I have good hand-eye coordination,” said Andrew
“We started going into the arcade just for a night out
So we started going in once a week just to win iPads.”
Because of their success on TikTok and other social media platforms
they are documenting every step of taking over the bowling alley and arcade via their social channels
“Who cares if nobody watches it or if everybody watches it
I think it’ll be fun to look back on someday.”
the facility features six bowling lanes and various arcade games such as skeeball
The establishment is open Friday through Sunday currently as they work out some kinks
Old Mill Fun Centre will be open seven days a week
“We’re just trying to learn the basics of what we need to be doing and all the business side of things,” said Erica
They are also adjusting to their new life and home in Mackinsons
They’ve met some friends already,” said Andrew
“That was our biggest worry and concern was the kids
When it comes to the overall establishment
they are giving it a “facelift” and doing some cleaning and painting
He’s also planning renovations to the lounge area and the birthday party room
“Those changes are all going to be there within the next month,” said Andrew
The community is excited for when they are fully up and running
Looking back over the past couple of months
Both say they are enjoying being away from the hustle and bustle of St
If Andrew could change anything about the move
I actually got my back thrown out,” he said
all reports will be actioned by RCMP as high-risk situations
— According to a Facebook post made by Laura Noseworthy
and his friends were arrested at gunpoint by RCMP on August 1
Noseworthy’s post said the incident happened after 9 p.m
after Oliver and his friends had spent the evening at McDonald’s
the post read that the boys purchased two toy cap guns
“(The boys) had fun pretending to shoot each other
“Problems escalated when they were walking down Water Street and pointed the toy guns at cars as they played.”
Noseworthy’s post said Oliver called her at 9 p.m
to inform her that he was going to a friend’s house and would call her when he needed to be picked up
four police officers brought her son home in handcuffs
after receiving reports that men with guns were firing at them
“The cops said they couldn’t tell if it was real guns or toys because people print 3D guns now to look like toys,” said Noseworthy’s post
“So they went with the assumption that they were real.”
Noseworthy’s post said that the RCMP set up a blockade
“The RCMP all had their guns pointed at the 12-year-old boys,” said her post
Officers commanded the boys over a PA system to drop their “weapons,” get on the ground
questioning what was happening.” Her post added
“The officers considered it resisting arrest.”
officers asked who their parents were and after recognizing the parent’s names from their line of work
the officers decided not to pursue charges
Noseworthy’s post said the charges they could have had include resisting arrest
Noseworthy was informed of the consequences and potential charges that could have been laid
Her post read that an officer was visibly shaken
“He almost started to cry as he was talking to us because he almost killed a kid because of a toy gun,” read her post
“He said he is trained to kill if faced with a weapon and protect the public
When it comes to why Noseworthy made the post
it wasn’t to shame the officers but to send a warning and provide a learning opportunity for other parents
“Please let your kids know what happened and explain the importance of play toys and where and when they are appropriate,” read Noseworthy’s post
The post added that she is lucky to be picking rocks out of her son’s cheeks rather than attending a funeral or calling lawyers
“They are lucky it went the way it did,” said her post
We never thought we would be dealing with this sort of situation either.”
following the incident that occurred in Bay Roberts
The statement said that shortly after 9:30 p.m
that Bay Roberts RCMP received a report of two individuals walking along Water Street in Bay Roberts in possession of handguns and pointing them at passing motorists
From there it said that multiple officers attended the area
The individuals were found to be youths in possession of toy guns
police then brought them home and explained the danger of the situation
media relations for RCMP confirmed that officers never pointed their guns at the two boys but said they did perform a high-risk takedown
“It didn’t involve pointing firearms at people,” said Garland
since the members are dealing with a high-risk situation
such as somebody in possession of a firearm
they would unholster their pistol and have it in their hands at a low-ready.”
Garland added that this measure is to be prepared
their pistols would have been out of their holsters while verbal commands were provided for the suspects to essentially comply and be taken into custody,” said Garland
Garland added in the case that this was a real firearm
She also confirmed that there was no roadblock on site
there was an area of construction where this happened,” said Garland
it looks like that maybe traffic wasn’t getting through because of construction
But my understanding is they didn’t set up a roadblock.”
The RCMP statement also shared information regarding two instances in Harbour Grace
Harbour Grace RCMP seized a .32 calibre revolver in a separate incident and in 2023
RCMP seized several 3-D printed firearms resembling toy guns in Harbour Grace
“Given the presence of firearms in the area and the threat that these weapons pose to public safety
all reports involving firearms will be actioned by RCMP as high-risk situations and police will respond appropriately,” the statement said
RCMP are also encouraging parents to speak to their children about the appropriate use of toy guns
“not be used in a manner that would cause concern to public safety.”

The cauldron for the 2024 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games found its home in front of the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts earlier this week
as the town signals the start of the Games and plans to welcome some 1,600 participants to competitions
athletes will compete at venues in four different communities as they celebrate the spirit of sport and competition
“The best of the province is coming and it’s our opportunity to showcase the town when they come,” said Bay Roberts Mayor Walter Yetman at a celebration for the host team earlier this week
10-17 and will feature athletes from 10 regions competing against each other in nine sports
the excitement has slowly started to build in the Conception Bay North community
Signs have gone up at the official venues and community torch runs have ignited
that sense of anticipation for everyone involved
as they stand on the precipice of the start of actual competition
for us to showcase the town and show what this town has to offer,” said co-chair Judy Morrow
Bay Roberts was first awarded the 2020 Summer Games in 2018
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the postponement of them a couple of times before the 2024 dates were decided on
managers and parents over the week represents a culmination for the town and the organizers involved
We’ve been anticipating this for so long,” said Yetman
Morrow and co-chair Neil Kearley have been planning these Games
The upcoming week is the result of that work
“As you go towards the end of preparations for something
everything reaches a crescendo,” said Kearley
a lot of activity and a lot of finishing touches
but we are certainly confident that we will be ready for Saturday morning when we get on their way
“We’re going to be working right up until the end in preparation.”
the Games are about the relationships that get formed between athletes as they compete against one another
Kearley said the relationships he has formed since Bay Roberts was awarded the event are one of the highlights of the planning process
and he looks forward to continuing that as the week progresses
“I’m also looking forward to when the Games begin to be able to take in a couple of athletic competitions and see the smiles on the athletes’ faces as they compete
and form relationships with athletes from across this province,” he said
When the opening ceremonies start and the official kickoff of the Games happens
Morrow doesn’t know if she’ll be quite ready for its inevitable end
It’s so rewarding when you put your heart and soul into something and such a big organization
to see it all to come to fruition,” said Morrow
The opening ceremonies are scheduled to start at 7 p.m
on Saturday at the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts

It’s a relatively quiet afternoon on the upper part of Country Road in Bay Roberts on Thursday
The silence is only broken by the occasional passing of a vehicle
its tires crunching against the gravel as it passes over the unpaved roadway
Normally a country haven for those with cabins in the area
that changed earlier this week when a blue Chevy Colorado was found burning on Sept
There wasn’t much left to that truck a few days later – just burnt gravel
a burnt-out pedal and the steel lining of the tires
“We’re a small town in rural Newfoundland and these things are not heard of very often,” said Bay Roberts Mayor Walter Yetman
the RCMP announced that its major crime unit was investigating a suspicious death in the community after police found human remains in the vehicle on Sept
the RCMP said they were looking for any information about any sightings of the truck between 1 a.m
A request for an update on the investigation was not returned prior to deadline on Oct
2 and spent much of the following day getting updates from the RCMP
He wanted to offer his condolences to the family of the deceased and said he was informed by the police there was no risk to the public
it wasn’t news that Yetman was expecting to get to start his week
“It’s happened in our backyard and … from a town point of view
While there is nothing confirming any sort of connection
a burned vehicle and a suspicious death isn’t foreign to the greater Conception Bay North region these days
It was only last spring when a similar scene happened in nearby Harbour Grace when police found human remains inside a burned-out vehicle
Yetman didn’t know of any connection between the two incidents
but he did say knowing they happened can be a wake-up call
it opens your eyes to what is potentially going on in your community that we have no idea of,” he said
Yetman hasn’t had much opportunity to speak with residents about what’s happened
but he believes there is still the feeling of concern hanging over the town
“It’s a concern and it’s natural for people

25 February 1928 (into the French family; which first settled in Newfoundland in or shortly before 1634
and since about 1832 has resided in Moreton’s Harbour)
her vital role in saving from fire the 400-seat Moreton’s Harbour United Church
The 1997 painting of the church was created for Grace by Latvian artist Wally Brants (months before his passing in 1998)
the bible was discovered by her personal assistant
The bible (including silk bookmark resting at 2 Kings
Chapter 22; some of her Sunday School notes; her baptismal certificate
and 4-leaf clovers marking Psalms 46 to 50) was wedged into the back of a bedroom dresser drawer at her former residence
Grace (then 8 years old) was the only sibling from her family to walk through a Moreton’s Harbour blizzard to the United Church
she realized from absence of footprints that she was to be the only student from the Harbour to attend the United Church Sunday School class that day
When she opened and started entering through the door to the sanctuary at the back of the Church
she was decisively denied entry by a wall of heat
in November 2022: “I was temporarily blinded
the wind would fan the fire inside and the church wouldn’t stand a chance
The stove inside the back door had overheated
Some seating finished in a glossy varnish had begun smoking
I struggled through gales and snow banks to the next garden
That’s where the Sunday School superintendent Hedley Knight lived
the superintendent rang the church bell in a tower attached to the front of the church
responded on foot or by sleigh to the United Church
presented by Church Recording Secretary Hedley Brett
acknowledged Grace for “her quick action in saving the church from total destruction.” The bible was inscribed: “presented for services rendered in connection with church fire… .”
graduated from high school at Moreton’s Harbour United
She chose teaching as her life’s vocation
she spent summer 1944 at Memorial University College (MUC)
undertaking the Summer School Teachers’ Training Course
James McGrath certified her “physically fitted to undertake duties as a School Teacher”
though much more “physically fitted” than Dr
she taught kindergarten and grade one pupils
Grace’s first teaching assignment — at age 16 years — took her (so she understood) to the United Church school in a Green Bay village
That assignment abruptly ended in less than four months
in the village proved to be fervent disciples of a charismatic Christian faith
to which they had lately converted from United Church doctrine
many of them—both pupils and their parents—pelted Grace with stones and later
snow balls because she refused to adhere to their faith
They hailed her on village streets as “doing the devil’s work” because she was known to play ‘auction 45s’ and other card games with her only two village friends; a lumber merchant and his wife
A United Church education administrator re-assigned her
In much more civilized and congenial Botwood
she was expected to complete her first year of teaching
she was medically examined (although she never regarded her health as impaired
Botwood had experienced a diphtheria epidemic
She subsequently taught for several full school years
at Botwood (preceded by more summers of MUC school teacher’s training)
she taught in Bay Roberts at Amalgamated (1950-1951)
LeMarchant Road (while the College included an elementary school)
Not until 1947—at age 19 years—had she formally qualified
to be a Kindergarten and First to Third Grade teacher
she routinely was involved in distributing cod liver oil to her pupils to be brought home for daily consumption by their families
in a media campaign promoting that dietary supplement
She forfeited seniority when she took leave from her teaching position in St
John’s to care for her ill mother in Moreton’s Harbour
The United Church minister’s wife there taught her secretarial and office management skills
she joined her sister Josephine at a finance company
qualified her as proficient in written and oral French language
she assisted her husband for 54 of his 68 years practicing law in St
and in his public life as a member of the Senate of Canada (1978 to 1999)
She was introduced to him at Old Colony Club
John’s during a dinner which each had attended
Grace and spouse manipulated its single canvas sail in brisk winds to catapult themselves over Quidi Vidi Lake
Most of their 27 acres of largely-wooded cottage property at King’s Road
was by them—with assistance of Grace’s brother Edward French – neatly cleared of brush using only hand tools
John’s Arts and Culture Centre performances
She cherished memories of occasions in England
at each of Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle
were members of Canada’s political community; hundreds of whom she encountered during her husband’s senatorial remit
