We’re knocking on doors for ONDP Humber River-Black Creek MPP Candidate Tom Rakocevic
Each conversation moves us one step closer to a government that puts working people first
Whether you’re knocking on doors for the first time or a seasoned canvasser
The Black Creek Community Health Centre is taking a different approach to health care
going beyond the walls of its facility and into neighbourhood streets
Black Creek is one of Toronto’s 31 Neighbourhood Improvement Areas (NIAs), it scored the lowest of all Toronto neighbourhoods in the city’s Neighbourhood Equity Index
low equity can look like higher unemployment
lack of community spaces and declining health
That’s why the Black Creek Community Health Centre is taking health care beyond its physical headquarters to provide services to locals in the immediate neighbourhood.
says there are stigmas in Black Creek against vaccines and medications
as well as doubts about the services it provides.
and build a team that’s very trustworthy and a team that the community recognizes — that they see on a daily basis
that live in the community,” she explains.
One of the centre’s newest tools is Wheels to Wellness
a mobile health unit equipped with blood-sugar and blood-pressure testing
the centre’s low-density population health manager
drives the health care van through the streets of Black Creek
parks and common community spaces to provide health checkups to local residents
“The traditional approach to medicine has failed a certain group of people
They have not been able to get the access that they deserve because they’re dealing with their immediate needs
those take precedence over their actual health.”
He adds that residents only attend to their health when they end up in an emergency room
which ultimately costs Ontario’s health-care system thousands of dollars.
Wheels to Wellness isn’t the centre’s first innovation
it started a community ambassador program where health-care professionals trained local residents to share information about general health checkups with their neighbours
these ambassadors helped fight medical misinformation
and encouraged people who were unwilling or unable to visit Black Creek Community Health Centre to get the right care
The centre also started a diabetes-focused coaching program. It targets Black Creek’s large African, Caribbean and Black population, who are at a higher risk of getting diabetes, according to a January 2025 study funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and Public Health Ontario (PHO)
Health-care professionals trained 15 residents to be coaches
including Festus Eromi Paul who got connected to a dietician at the centre two years ago
The dietician monitored Paul’s food intake and activities for a year
which helped him reverse his diabetic condition.
“From what I’ve experienced practically
so I just want to give back to the community
So that’s why I joined to become a health coach,” he says
As of last month, the centre made profiles for the health coaches on its website
and started contacting people at risk of getting diabetes
offering four months of coaching on healthy living to prevent the chronic disease

Riding the wave of patriotism washing over the country
Black Creek Coffee is serving up some national pride with Canadianos
Social media was abuzz as locals posted photos of the Georgetown Market Place coffee bar’s menu
gave the community a chuckle as well as something to talk about
the fun was motivated by the changing winds of international politics
He switched the name “to show a little bit of patriotism” in the wake of “what’s going on with the relationship between Canada and America right now.”
He polled his employees and “it came back 100 per cent in favour of changing it.”
“It's generated a lot of conversation
We have a lot of people taking photos of the menu,” Smith said
The move comes amidst economic tensions related to hefty U.S
tariffs and Donald Trump suggesting Canada become America's 51st state
Many sports fans have made their displeasure over this known by booing The Star-Spangled Banner at hockey games
This and similar acts of patriotism across the nation have prompted many businesses
Shops are labelling Canadian goods with some derivative of the maple leaf and flags are popping up on door signs
Smith is carrying on what he has always done
being “a big supporter for buying Canadian from when we first launched.”
“Our packaging is designed and manufactured in Burlington by Rootree
all our tea comes from Genuine Tea in Toronto
So we are a big supporter of buying as local as we can,” Smith said
It is perhaps fitting that Black Creek has taken on patriotism as a calling card. The business got its start in Acton, where it launched a roastery. Acton has often been called the most patriotic town in Canada, a moniker which, in a way, stretches as far back as the 1940s.
some of the shop's earnings go to dog rescue charities.
The Americano espresso has its origins in the Second World War
When American soldiers in Italy didn’t find local espressos to their liking
This new style of coffee was a hit with their foreign guests
thus solidifying the popularity of the Americano

moving from Victoria to Black Creek and becoming an empty nester within the last two years
Leaving behind a career as a senior manager for emergency response for the Canadian Red Cross for British Columbia and Yukon
Reist looked to take a step back from the stress and let herself reset
This reset didn’t last long though and soon she found herself facing a new chapter in the same field.
After only two months of rest and a break from full-time employment
Reist found herself back in emergency response work but this time as a volunteer
rested for about six weeks after leaving full-time employment
resetting myself and went straight into deployment for August,” said Reist
She embraced her humanitarianism and joined a volunteer agency that kept her on her toes
The organization is the charity Team Rubicon Canada
which responds to disaster situations and helps with boots on the ground to aid those impacted by disasters and restore some of the damage left behind by natural disasters.
The fire that ripped through Jasper earlier this year was one such disaster that Reist was deployed to
she lent her support to those who spent all day in the ashes
sifting through what was left of residents' homes
hoping to find a memento or two spared by the fire.
“That is what was important - to know that we sifted their property and anything that was found that could help bring them closure.”
Despite the disaster and sifting through over 300 properties
Reist and other volunteers found moments to share comradery and decompress together.
“Our full team would come together every day just before dinner and we would cry
We would share the stories together; it didn’t matter age or background
Volunteering for this group meant long days
sleeping on cots and being away from family for weeks at a time
knowing that we have helped people that needed our help and wanted our help.”
Jasper wasn’t Reist’s first deployment though
she responded with the Red Cross to Hurricane Fiona in Prince Edward Island.
“It was seeing the devastation that got to me
When I landed I was told to be careful of downed power lines in the driveway of where I was staying
It caught me off guard at first and just thought to myself
The different kinds of natural disasters have stuck with Reist
who has also been deployed to the Yukon and the United States for hurricane destruction
Learning about how different each situation can be has been enlightening; the Yukon experience has stuck with Reist especially
“I remember being deployed to the Yukon for flooding and [I] was so used to B.C
flooding from when we are coming out of the winter but for them it was flooding due to ice jams.”
Reist didn’t know what her future would look like
but she knew she would always want to continue her humanitarian efforts.
“I wanted to carry on as I have a lot of passion for this but I also have to be mindful of my own health.”
Part of her mental health care was helped by the guiding principles of Team Rubicon Canada but Reist also has her ways of dealing with the stress and compartmentalizing the sorrow that is found in natural disasters due to interactions with the survivors of these catastrophic events.
“We have to be mindful of our mental health
it was literally setting up the campfire on our property and that was exactly what I needed
When I got back my daughter was here and I was able to talk it through with her.”
The other organization that Reist has turned to in her new downtime is the MARS Wildlife Rescue centre in Merville
She wanted to give back to her local community and found herself in a whole new type of rescue work
“We are cleaning up and feeding the animals that come in
I’m just so impressed with the staff members and have learned so much
No matter what animal comes through the doors
Reist will always embrace her humanitarian ways and give back to both her local community and wherever disaster response takes her
she will be taking a personal reset and enjoying some family time
was shot and killed Monday at a plaza on Trethewey Drive at Black Creek Drive — the day before he was to begin Grade 11 at Weston Collegiate Institute
A memorial at the scene where Mario Giddings was shot to death on Labour Day in a plaza near Trethewey Drive and Black Creek Drive
Police would not confirm if 15-year-old shooting victim Mario Giddings appeared in the video or what may have led to what investigators are calling a targeted attack Monday night
Police say they are investigating a rap video that was recorded at a Black Creek plaza and posted on YouTube shortly before 15-year-old Mario Giddings was shot and killed at the same location this week
one police source said there is concern for ongoing violence and retaliation
On Monday night, a “dark-coloured” vehicle reportedly entered the plaza on Trethewey Drive and Black Creek Drive before a gun went off — striking Giddings and puncturing at least one business’s window. The vehicle then fled the scene
features an artist called Str8cash surrounded by other young men drinking
There has been online speculation that Giddings was one the people featured in the video
nor what may have led to what investigators are calling a targeted attack
What plays out in the video has become commonplace in the city that’s home to hip-hop legends: young
local artists looking for their own infamy with slick editing and well-mixed tracks that rep their communities while often disparaging those of their rivals
which has more than 25,000 views on YouTube alone as of Wednesday
“I can confirm that investigators are aware of it and are looking into it,” a Toronto police spokesperson told the Star when asked about the video
While much-publicized rap battles between superstars like Drake and Kendrick Lamar are celebrated
these neighbourhood beefs between relatively unknown artists simmer beneath the surface in Toronto — increasingly leading to explosive
who was not authorized to speak on the record about ongoing investigations
That has left police and prosecutors to decipher online feuds that may lead to real-world turf wars fuelled by ego and status
Str8cash’s online handles include reference to the group “C3,” which Toronto police have labelled as a gang in the Black Creek and Trethewey area
according to a 2018 internal police report
labelling it a dangerous operation that has access to both money and firearms
who is not being accused of any wrongdoing
did not respond to a request for comment through social media
who end up suffering the consequences when these online feuds bleed into the real world
better known as Brampton-raised Director X
a celebrity music video producer who has worked with the likes of Drake and Rihanna
blamed the prevalence of technology that allows for instantaneous reactions and the accessibility of guns — not the music
“We’ve been at a crisis point for a long time,” said Lutz
whose organization Operation Prefrontal Cortex has been advancing meditation and mindfulness for young people at risk of violence
“These are kids growing up in very tough neighbourhoods
Add to that that young peoples’ brains aren’t fully developed and that social media is “foundational” for youth today
pressing records and getting air time on radios
social media and new technology cuts down that process and adds the pressures of instant feedback
He said adults need to meet kids where they are, using techniques like those documented in his organization’s new film “Quiet Minds Silent Streets.”
“We need to descend upon these schools and help these kids out,” Lutz said
“It’s literally life and death.”
said she’s at a loss for words about the increase in the number of young people involved in gun violence
“It’s a real pandemic that’s happening in the city
and it’s happening to our young ones
whether they’re the ones subject to picking up a gun or dying by a gun.”
Roundtable discussions and visits to the community from politicians mean nothing if there isn’t any followup action
such as funding for counselling and programming
She said the responsibility often falls on front-line workers who can only do so much with minimal resources
“They just don’t know what to do anymore,” she said
“But there’s an outcry in the community
If a connection between the video and the shooting is confirmed
it would be far from the first time provocative music videos and social media posts have spilled into real-life violence in this city
In June 2018, 21-year-old Jahvante Smart was killed in a daylight shootout just days after the up-and-coming rapper from Regent Park appeared in a video recorded partly in a rival neighbourhood — a move some interpreted as antagonistic
was a rising rap star who had just toured with Drake the previous year
Whether that video had anything to do with Smart’s death was never established since the motive was never discussed at the trial
(Motive is not an essential element for the Crown to prove either murder or manslaughter.)
In 2020, T’Quan Robertson pleaded guilty to firing a handgun into a crowded Scarborough playground on June 14, 2018
the rapper known as Top Gunna went on a popular Toronto hip-hop podcast to discuss his music
saying he bounces his material off confidants willing to be critical
“I need to hear Simon Cowell’s opinion,” he quipped
referring to the British record executive and “American Idol” judge
At Mario Giddings’ school Weston C.I.
in North York where he was expected to return Tuesday to start Grade 11 with his classmates
parents received a letter announcing his death
“Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time,” Principal Rosanna Deo wrote
adding school officials were “deeply saddened” by the loss
Deo said the school’s priority is providing support and care for students
and that social work supports would be available this week and as long as they are needed
“Some of our students knew Mario better than others and their reactions may be different depending upon their relationship with him and their previous experience with loss,” the letter reads
pointing to a list of resources for parents and students
Those parents and students are no stranger to gun violence. In February, a 15-year-old boy was gunned down in the parking lot and survived after school staff came to his rescue. Two 17 year olds were arrested in that shooting
Father Charles Brandt’s spiritual quest drew him to a more solitary contemplative life
Brandt found his way to Vancouver Island and was ordained as a Catholic hermit-priest
he moved his cabin to a remote location onto 27 acres of forest that had been logged a couple of decades earlier
This young forest would grow wild around his hermitage above the Oyster River for the next 50 years
Brandt believed that many contemporary ecological issues could be traced back to a lost sense of the sacredness of the natural world
He devoted hours daily to prayer and meditation within his forest
he generously donated the property to the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) to serve as a park
The hermitage remains in operation through the efforts of the Brandt Oyster River Hermitage Society which offers a residency program
quiet meditation walks and educational seminars
This year’s keynote speaker at the annual general meeting will be Margo McLoughlin of the McLoughlin Gardens Society
McLoughlin will be talking about contemplative practice in the creative process
Mark Harrison will be present to answer questions about the new park
at the Oyster River Fire Hall at 2241 Catherwood Rd
Afterwards, an Open House at the Hermitage will be held at 2364 Catherwood Rd. Limited parking available along the roadside. The Hermitage is just a 5 minute walk from the Firehall. The Brandt Oyster River Hermitage Society (BORHS) would like to invite the public to support the hermitage legacy by becoming a yearly member for $20. said that 2024 was a difficult year for SRT with major mechanical issues plaguing the team for most of the year.
“Once we finally resolved the suspension issues we won one event and runner-ed up another at the last race weekend of the year
salvaging our season to place a respectable 3rd in points," she said
Driver Otto Schulte added that the “hot rod was so bad that I got to the point I didn’t even want to take it down the track fearing it would get out of control and flip upside down at 300 km/h
“We often take our grand kids racing with us to be our pit crew," Leslie said
Both Rhaen (11) and Juniper (10) Schulte came to Driven Women to help represent our team
This season their brother Bodhi (8) will try his hand at being our pit crew.”

Police have identified a 41-year-old woman from Lanark as the victim in a fatal single-vehicle collision on Black Creek Road
Two other people in the vehicle received minor injuries and were taken to hospital
A 41-year-old woman from Lanark has been identified as the victim in a fatal single-vehicle collision on Black Creek Road, near Loves Road.
Around 3:20 p.m. on Dec. 7, Lanark County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers responded to a report of a rollover in Lanark, with several people injured and one person trapped in a small sedan-type vehicle that ended up on its roof in the ditch, OPP said in a Dec. 9 media release.
Assisted by Lanark Highlands Fire Service and Lanark County Paramedic Service, Lanark County OPP “found one of the occupants of the vehicle with serious injuries and who was later pronounced dead at the scene,” the police service indicated.
Two other people in the vehicle received minor injuries and were taken to hospital.
Black Creek Road near Loves Road was closed for seven hours to allow for an investigator with the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit, an OPP reconstructionist and the Chief Coroner of Ontario to conduct an investigation.

When Marc Vance – then working in custom closet and drapery design in Vancouver – suggested to his family that they take up ranching in Black Creek
would soon be living Marc’s childhood dream
After getting lost while visiting a design client in the Comox Valley
with the children running the farmer’s market stands
and grandparents also also helping out here and there
“It had been a childhood dream to be a rancher,” Marc says
recalling with a laugh how he’d ask his parents to call him “Tex” and make him cornbread
because those seemed like rancher things to do
“Now I look out the window in the morning and I can’t believe we’re actually getting to do this.”
From the start, the Vances’ wanted to approach their new livelihood sustainably, and Island Bison was the perfect solution
the ranch is also home to about 120 water buffalo
we were the only place you could get water buffalo meat
noting both bison and water buffalo are both lean
with lower cholesterol but lots of flavour
The Vances’ also believe in providing their herds exactly what they need
“We believe that raising our animals as 100 per cent grass fed
without the use of antibiotics or added growth hormones is not only what’s ethical
but also what’s best for all of us,” Marc says
“Our bison and water buffalo range free on our pastures
with natural spring water sources and stands of trees
plus mud wallows and dust pits they enjoy through the summer.”
Island Bison is one of numerous Vancouver Island producers and growers participating in Island Good
an initiative with four Island grocers to increase consumer awareness of Island-made and Island-grown food products
The Vancouver Island Economic Alliance pilot project
Thrifty Foods and 49th Parallel stores through August
aims to increase demand for products made or grown on the Island
posters and other signage highlighting these products in all store departments
“We’ve been thrilled with the interest Vancouver Islanders have shown in the Island Good program since it launched and as we come into summer
source local and eat local will be even greater,” says VIEA President George Hanson
“Shoppers have shown us that identifying Island Good options is important to them and we know that will lead to increased production
Look for the Island Good tags
enjoy local food and support our local economy: It’s Island Good

there is a completely different type of land-based boat racing happening on Saturday
“It’s a land-based form of boating torture,” said Saratoga Speedway public relations director Cole Sorenson.
This one-of-a-kind race involves multiple Sunwest RV Centre Crash-to-Pass cars and trucks towing unwanted boats behind them at speed
The end goal is “to destroy as much of your competitor's boat as possible by the end of the allotted time,” said Sorenson.
pit maneuvering and in extreme cases driving through boats at speeds approaching 80 km/h.
Erik Jessen is a regular Saratoga Speedway Crash-to-Pass competitor and will be competing in this weekend’s boat racing action.
“If you want to see an all-out war on the track with all the hitting and spinning boats being thrown around
Saratoga is the place to be this weekend,” said Jessen who has been racing for six years now.
“It’s hard because we are doing this on a wet track,” he added
“It’s like trying to drive your daily driver on ice with a boat attached to it.”

After losing out on a day of racing due to rain
Saratoga Speedway’s annual Battle at Black Creek weekend turned into a one-day Sunday matinee for the LD Industries BC Late Model Series
the race was shortened to 100 laps to enable the event to be finished on time for the venue’s noise curfew
Seventeen cars started the main event
with Daryl Crocker scoring quick time in his number 84 Ford Mustang
racers Sheldon Mayert and Trevor Adelman leading the field to the green
with the quicker qualified cars in the field having to make their way from mid-pack as a result of a 10-car inversion
Victoria’s Kyle Cottam was able to find his way from the seventh starting spot to the front of the back
bringing Courtenay’s Kyle Wade and fast qualifier Crocker with him
it was Cottam who would cross the line in first to score his maiden BC Late Model win over Wade and Crocker
Jarret Bonn and Dan Ursel rounded out the top five
For the final few laps, Cottam had to work hard to hold off Wade and the rest of the pack
Cottam was a little self-deprecating in his response
“I think it might have been more of the driver,” said Cottam
“I gave one of these away a few years ago when I finished second to Korbin (Thomas) at the Canada 200
Cottam pocketed $1,500 for his win in what was his first BC Late Model start of 2024
Saratoga Speedway’s next race will be July 6th for Home Track Heroes featuring Crash to Pass
the Ace Brewing Bombers and the Kyte Delivery Service A & B Class Hornets
sprint racer Aaron Willison clinched his second Northwest Sprint Tour championship Saturday (Aug
17) at Saratoga Speedway in Black Creek
The Langley native entered the weekend leading the championship standings for the Winged Sprint Car series
And after a $15,000 victory at the War of the Wings Sprint Car race at Monroe Washington’s Evergreen Speedway earlier in the month
he was eager to continue his winning streak.
the main event began with Willison starting sixth after qualifying first
Willison moved up to second place behind Jimmy White from Kamloops
He successfully overtook White before the tenth lap
Willison kicked his weekend off with a win and extended his points lead out of reach for the majority of the field
“We wanted to pretty much lock things up on Friday night
so that we could take the pressure off come Saturday,” he said in a media release.
On Saturday night, the field was running for the Neil Montgomery Memorial
in honour of the late Victoria Auto Racing Hall of Fame inductee
Willison started the night by making fast time and winning his heat race
Willison advanced to third place behind Brad Aumen from Duncan
with Meeres in front and Willison starting second
Willison then surged ahead to take the lead to secure victory
with James Miller and Jeff Montgomery completing the top three
“Winning the Neil Montgomery Memorial is a big deal," Willison said in a statement
"When I first started in Sprint Car racing Neil and his son Jeff were the guys to beat in this class
To also get the championship against some of the best pavement Sprint Car teams in North America is just the icing on the cake.”
Saratoga Speedway's season will progress next weekend with the final Crash to Pass Boat Race on Aug. 24
BLACK CREEK — Outagamie County sheriff’s deputies were stationed at Black Creek Elementary School as a precaution Wednesday morning while authorities executed a search warrant at a nearby apartment complex
investigators with the Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search warrant about 9:45 a.m
Wednesday at an apartment complex on East Burdick Street in the Village of Black Creek
This was part of an investigation into stolen property including stolen firearms
Due to the likely presence of firearms and other information developed during this investigation the Outagamie County Emergency Response Team was utilized for the service of the warrant
Due to the proximity of the Black Creek Elementary School deputies were stationed at the school and the school was placed in a temporary lockdown while the scene was secured
This was coordinated with school officials prior to the incident
One person was taken into custody and transported to the Outagamie County Jail
The Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office and Wisconsin State Patrol
RCMP in the Comox Valley says they are looking into the possibility of charges against a driver after a serious head-on collision occurred in Black Creek on Sept. 2
“We’re looking into it as the possible cause of being inattentive
whatever the cause of that might be,” says Const
on Highway 19a across from the Black Creek Community Church.
The passenger of one of the two vehicles involved posted a dashcam video showing a pickup crossing the highway center line and crashing head-on into her car despite her husband’s attempts to avoid the impact.
“I wanted to share this video with (the) intention people use this as an example or realize what the consequences are of operating a vehicle irresponsibly,” Alla Korontenko posted on Facebook.
Korontenko also said she wanted to help those who assisted after the crash.
”I wanted to reach out to the community and express our utmost gratitude to everyone who came to help us after our horrific accident,” she wrote
According to Capt. Jeff Caring of Oyster River Fire Rescue
first responders arrived on the scene to find a serious situation
“When we got there it was quite obviously pretty high-velocity crash
vehicles were spread quite far apart,” Caring says
Caring adds he was able to view the dashcam footage after it had been posted on social media
”For us as responders getting to see that was quite interesting
we don’t usually get to see that and a lot of times there’s no inclination of how these events unfold before we get there
so it really paints a clear picture of how the vehicles ended up where they did,” Caring says.
Terragni says investigators will review the footage as well to determine if any charges are appropriate under the Motor Vehicle Act.
“That really helps us to determine what happened
dash-cam footage is invaluable to a lot of our investigations,” Terragni says.
Terragni says dash-cam footage is very helpful in their investigations and with their increasing popularity
investigators can obtain them in many instances.
“Our investigators did attend the scene and didn’t note any causes of impairment so that’s why we’ve gone to the inattentive route,” she says.
Koronteko says she and her spouse and two and five-year-old children were badly hurt but did not sustain life-threatening injuries.
Caring says four individuals were transferred to hospital by ambulance in Monday’s incident with two others being taken away by friends or family members.
He says the area where the mishap occurred is a 60km/hr zone and is a common spot for crashes
”We see a lot of crashes where it seems like people are going much faster than that so it would be nice if they were adhering to the speed zones and obviously paying attention when they’re driving,” Caring says.
He also noted that the crash happened on a very straight and clear area of the highway
Korontenko says just a day after the accident she spotted a man holding his cell phone with both hands and texting while driving
”Is it really worth it for people to not pull over for a few seconds if they need to text or reach for something or to answer a call?” Koronteko wrote.
Terragni says the posting of the crash video online serves as a good reminder to people to pay extra attention on the road whether they are driving or
“Had they not been paying attention the injuries could have been much
much worse. \They were able to veer off to the side a little bit which I think mitigated some of the injuries sustained in that crash,” Terragni says.

Florida’s Black Creek Crayfish to Receive Endangered Species Act Protections
“I’m thrilled the Black Creek crayfish will get these long-awaited protections
but these little animals are still threatened by degrading water quality and invasive species,” said Ragan Whitlock
“More has to be done to ensure these animals have a chance at survival
including taking strong action to stop nutrient pollution into their remaining habitat.”
a white or yellow dorsal stripe and a rust-colored abdomen with black stripes
The species occupies a small range in the lower St
Johns River Watershed in northeastern Florida
As a result of the crayfish’s limited range
the Service predicts that every remaining population could be harmed by a single catastrophic event
the Service emphasized that the main threats affecting the species are harms from nonindigenous and invading species
as well as nutrient inundation from agricultural activities that degrade water quality and quantity
The Service concurrently proposed more than 650 miles of critical habitat for the Black Creek crayfish across 15 waterways
sand-bottomed and tannic-stained streams with high levels of oxygen
Today’s decision reverses the Service’s incorrect 2021 finding that the crayfish did not warrant protection
Species with federally protected critical habitat are more than twice as likely to be moving toward recovery than species without it
Federal agencies that fund or permit projects in critical habitat must consult with the Service to ensure habitat is not harmed

(WLUK) -- It's the end of an era in Outagamie County
two jobs and 72 years of combined public safety service is calling it quits
Black Creek Police Chief Lowell James took one last trip around the village Friday
I moved here shortly after I accepted my job here and I've never looked back about that," said Chief James
Following 32 years with the Black Creek Police Department -- including the last 15.5 years as chief -- he's now officially retired
I could do many more things to interact with the community
my officers hand out s'mores packages to people having campfires as home
but to see people put a generator between three houses and run cords to everyone's house -- that's what Black Creek is," said James
He's walking away now so he can enjoy the next chapter of his life
but it's journey he won't be on alone
Outagamie County telecommunicator Linda James is Chief James' wife
Four decades after she picked up her first call in Outagamie County's communications 911 center
she's retiring on the same exact day as her husband
"It will be the first summer that we have had as a couple for 40 years
It was back in 1985 when Linda started working in the county's 911 center
when some people are dealing with the worst
40 years and tens of thousands of 911 calls later
other days you can't wait to walk out the door when your relief gets here
It's not something to be taken lightly."
And neither is the bond she and her husband share

Scott Slater and his children enjoyed kneeboarding and fishing on the calm waters of Lake Geneva in Keystone Heights
Lakes Geneva and Brooklyn were the staples of recreation and leisure for the community
forcing residents to constantly adapt to fluctuating water levels
“I would walk down to the lake and bass fish all the time,” Slater said
“Then the lake declined to where it was seven little tiny ponds at one time and was no longer navigable by boat.”
the nearly finished construction of the Black Creek Restoration Project promises stable water levels and renewed recreational activities for Keystone Heights
Johns River Water Management District operates
has cost tens of millions of dollars and aims to recharge the Floridan Aquifer using excess water from Black Creek
The aquifer is an underground freshwater reservoir that supplies drinking water to Florida and neighboring states
Sinkholes in the lakes send water directly to the Floridan Aquifer
president of the Save Our Lakes Organization (SOLO)
explained that overuse of the aquifer caused the lakes’ low water levels
“Lake Brooklyn and Lake Geneva are two major recharge areas for the Floridan Aquifer,” Katz-James said
“And the Floridan Aquifer cannot keep up with the population.”
Data that water management officials collected show that
Lake Brooklyn’s water level was about 85 feet
Lake Geneva’s lowest recorded water level was 81 feet in 2012
Lake Geneva is seen from a satellite in 1985 and again at its lowest water level that the St
Johns River Water Management District recorded in 2012
Lake Brooklyn is seen from a satellite in 1985 and again at its lowest water level that the St
Johns River Water Management District recorded in 2004
While recent wet seasons have given the impression of rising water levels
natural rainfall alone cannot compensate for this water demand in the long run
the water in the lakes has fluctuated for years
we had a very rainy season and water literally came all the way up to the treeline,” Katz-James said
According to the SOLO website
discussions to find a solution to the issue have been going on since 2002
Katz-James said the project finally gained momentum with help from former Senator Rob Bradley
along with former Representatives Travis Cummings and Bobby Payne
said he developed an interest in environmental and water issues after being elected to the state Senate
Johns River Water Management District to bring me the project that would have the biggest impact on making sure that the lake levels are returned to normal,” he said
“They brought me this project in its very conceptual stages
and then we went about getting the funding in the Florida Legislature.”
Over $43 million was allocated to the Black Creek project through legislative appropriations. Other parties involved in funding include St. Johns River Water Management District and the North Florida Utilities Consortium, according to the water management district website
The Black Creek Restoration Project will treat excess water from Black Creek and pump it into Alligator Creek
the district’s media and communications manager
said the project is expected to be finished within the next several months
“The pipeline itself is complete,” Evitt said
“It’s really dependent on getting the media from the distributor and we just have to get that installed.”
While the project aims to increase recharge to the Floridan Aquifer
it also impacts the community of Keystone Heights
Mayor Nina Rodenroth highlighted how stable water levels may bring businesses back to the town
you also remove vendors that sell things to take to the beach,” she said
“What I’m focused on now is trying to create awareness to get people to come back and bring new businesses to the city.”
the Black Creek Restoration Project means returning the town to the charming destination and ideal vacation spot it once was
the project means having a consistent supply of water and being able to fish without worrying about the lakes drying up
“Keeping the Black Creek pipeline running will recharge the aquifer so we get the benefit of full lakes again,” he said
“But more importantly anybody that has a straw going into the Floridan Aquifer gets to know they can keep doing that.”
