– Team Northern Ontario’s Douglas Dean (6-2; Thunder Bay) finally captured his first national title at the 2025 Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship in Boucherville
Dean overpowered Team Québec #1’s Carl Marquis (6-2; Magog) 8-5 at Le club de Curling Boucherville for the second time in the tournament
after having been the only one to take down the home team powerhouse all week
“To finally cross that finish line after capturing three silvers and to bring it home to Northern Ontario
“I’m super proud of my team; we struggled here and there
joined on the ice by vice-skip Gino Sonego
winning the game with consistency and patience
The game was evenly matched through eight ends
but Dean’s squad started pulling away in the fourth end when they put three points up on the scoreboard
Marquis’ game looked promising in the fifth end
but Dean’s strong takeout game derailed Marquis’ plan and forced him to only lay one
It looked like the game could turn in the start of the sixth end
with the Northern Ontarians struggling a bit with the ice that allowed Marquis’ team to set up camp in the house
but Dean quickly regained his composure and put another point up on the board
the scoreboard did not tell the whole story
Although the seventh end finished with Dean stealing another point
Team Québec #1 entered the eighth with visible determination
After a few missed shots by Team Northern Ontario
Team Québec #1 was sitting a potential three before Dean lined up a perfect takeout to secure his win
we’re not going to settle for silver this time,’” said Dean
reflecting on his collection of silver medals
the bronze medal match got off to a hot start for Team British Columbia #1’s Rick Robinson (5-3; Richmond)
quickly putting up four to finish off the third end
While Newfoundland and Labrador’s Dennis Thiessen (4-4; St
John’s) immediately countered with two points in the fourth end
an improvement over the two teams’ faceoff earlier in the week that ended 8-3 in Thiessen’s favour
Boucherville saw a great showing of national talent and even hosted some members of a youth curling club on Saturday
The championship week ended with hope to grow the sport across the country and to different age groups
The 2025 Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship was co-hosted by Défi sportif AlterGo

it’s a well-established destination that we absolutely adored

Laurent eventually became the chef at Chez Lionel

evolving with the seasons and what’s available in the market
The focus is on local and seasonal ingredients
we had the pleasure of tasting the capon chicken wings stuffed with pork—a delight
served with gochujang mayonnaise and a variety of fresh herbs (Thai basil
These are guaranteed to remain on the menu for a long time
The grilled cheese sandwiches remain on the menu
as does the bánh mì—we highly recommend it

A fresh new spot has arrived in Boucherville with the opening of Café Papilles! This charming café, which opened its doors on August 1, 2024, has already found a special place in the hearts of South Shore residents. With a brand carefully crafted by the Basalte agency and a captivating presence on social media
it’s no surprise that Papilles has quickly garnered excitement
we couldn’t wait to discover what this café has to offer
they decided to step away from fine dining to focus on the fundamentals with the Papilles Café-Cuisine project
the café offers delicious ready-to-eat meals made in-house
Both owners, who grew up on the South Shore, share that the Papilles project brought together many long-time friends, from photographers (Drowster and Mathilde Langevin) to their general contractor
Their entire circle pitched in to bring this vision to life
Papilles is designed as a space for sharing and connection
Chloé and Marie-Ève aspire to share their passion for cooking by welcoming guests with the same warmth as if they were inviting them into their home
For their coffee, Chloé and Marie-Ève partnered with Marc-Alex, master roaster at 94 Celcius in Sainte-Julie
They serve specialty coffee sourced from Colombia and Brazil
grown and harvested by women entrepreneurs who collaborate directly with the roaster

No wonder it has quickly become a menu favorite
A Big Crush on the Instagrammable Matcha Latte
We absolutely fell in love with the Instagrammable matcha latte—enhanced with a homemade strawberry and raspberry puree—as well as the sparkling lemonade made with seasonal raspberries
We also couldn’t resist trying the homemade “Pap’sicle”—a strawberry lemonade featured on the kids’ menu—and we have to say
it’s sure to melt the hearts of adults too
we left with a bag full of pastries for those with a sweet tooth

developers kept a close eye on Charron Island
a site of exceptional beauty a half hour’s drive from downtown Montreal
as the coveted land stands at the head of a unique archipelago of relatively intact islands in the middle of the St
a year before the city hosted the Olympic Games
a 130-room hotel was opened under the Sheraton banner
creating a major precedent for future development
The mid-1970s was a time of widespread enthusiasm for road infrastructure
and the Quebec government failed to see the potential for irremediable damage to the islands’ unique ecosystem
and when a 2,500-unit condominium project was proposed for Charron Island
The Quebec government put a hold on the project
bought the island with the view of integrating it with the existing Îles-de-Boucherville National Park on four of the neighbouring islands
This major commitment also included funding for a new visitor centre
to be built and run by Sépaq (Société des établissements de plein air du Québec)
the organization responsible for Quebec’s extensive park network
Sépaq had already shown signs of wanting to give a fresh look to its parks as it upgraded its facilities
it opened a visitor centre with a contemporary aesthetic in Mont-Tremblant National Park
had welcomed the opportunity to steer their client away from stereotypes such as the oversized log cabins often associated with Canada’s and Quebec’s parklands
For the Îles-de-Boucherville National Park
Smith Vigeant was again selected (through an RFP process) to design the facility
this was an entirely different proposition from their earlier visitor centre
Lawrence River landscape is sprinkled with beautiful mature trees
including magnificent specimens of weeping willows
These trees became a leitmotif for the architects as they started their work
informing the sweeping forms and delicate exterior screens of the final project
which recently garnered an OAQ Award of Excellence
The concept was developed through an integrated design process
which took place over the course of a three-day charette
The full-day workshops involved the client
professionals from a wide spectrum of design disciplines
One of the first decisions that evolved from these meetings was to split the program into two separate components
The main pavilion—350 square metres in size—includes an arrival area
a storage area and a mechanical room occupy the rest of the building
150-square-metre equipment rental facility
Both buildings are striking curvilinear objects—a presence that is simultaneously surprising and harmonious
blending in with the meadow-like landscape of the islands
the buildings act as a gateway to the water beyond and to the activities taking place around the wharf
This visual link—from the parking area to the St
a requirement that was elegantly resolved with the presence of two structures on either side of a central public area
In keeping with the tree canopy narrative evoked by the architects
an overhang subtly signals the entrance to the main pavilion
the visitor’s gaze is attracted towards the ceiling
where a curvilinear shaft dominates the space
recalls wanting to give the impression of “a break between trees
letting the sun in.” The more prosaic explanation is that the clerestory windows integrated in the lightwell are part of a carefully studied natural ventilation system
which cools the pavilion without mechanical air conditioning
The client’s strong ecological agenda was key to all design decisions
“Each move was intended to contribute to the overall aesthetics of the pavilion
yet also play a role in the project’s sustainability.” A prime example is the lace-like wood slats on the exterior of the pavilions
while allowing the sunrays to penetrate deep in the building during the cooler seasons
Exterior and interior finishes are mostly cedar
according to its particular location and the effect desired
the exterior slats were treated with a coating that imitates the weathering process and will ensure a smooth transition in appearance as they age
Triple-glazed windows open up to the surroundings
while reflecting the natural beauty of the site when seen from the outside
It is to be hoped that birds won’t be fooled by the illusion
The desire to use contemporary architecture to emphasize the individual identity of Quebec’s parks
rather than sticking to a nostalgic stereotype
Of interest as well is the freedom enjoyed by the architects
who were able to fully explore a conceptually driven approach
rather than just accommodating a set of functions
There are a number of precedents for this creative climate in park and interpretive centre design
One of them is the Centre d’interprétation du Bourg de Pabos
Resulting from an early architectural competition
somewhat flamboyant pavilion set the tone for new directions in architecture and gave hope to generations of young architects in Quebec
Traditional procurement methods are still all too prevalent for most building types in Quebec and in Canada
The incentive to come up with creative solutions is obviously not as strong for the architects as it is when they take part in a competition
In spite of this more constrained selection process
the jewel-like Îles-de-Boucherville pavilions are proof that
architects of talent such as Smith Vigeant can come up with surprising

The Îles-de-Boucherville National Park, which offers great outdoor experiences just minutes away from downtown-Montreal, is now equipped with a new discovery and services center designed by Smith Vigeant Architectes. Opened in June, the project recently received two awards at the 2017 American Architecture Prize
receiving a nod in the “recreational” category
The center is both the main welcoming point for visitors of the park and a showcase building for Sepaq
the center confirms Sepaq’s commitment to be an ambassador of wood construction excellence and Smith Vigeant Architectes’ expertise in wood construction design
The conceptual quality of this project is the result of an integrated design process and active collaboration between the architects
The center invites visitors on a discovery of nature and provides a place for social interaction
The architecture respects and reflects its environment as the building achieves high standards of environmental performance and was designed to fit harmoniously within the site
The buildings undulated edges were carefully placed to minimize tree cutting
and encourage visitors to wander around and progressively discover the space
The fluid motion is accentuated by a textured veil: a succession of wooden slats overlapping the siding all around the building
This cladding also acts as a light filter and produces shadows dancing across the ground
a curvy channel-like recess on the ceiling and a skylight bring in natural light and enhances natural ventilation
The architectural composition is all tied-in together by a glass curtain wall which offers direct views of the parks from the inside and reflecting nature on the tainted glass outside

MontrealNewsQuebec to develop a plan to control and cull the white-tailed deer populationBy The Canadian PressPublished: February 12, 2022 at 1:58PM EST
In most Canadian cities grabbing a snow brush and cleaning off your car before you can head to work in the morning is all part of enduring the winter months
it’s not uncommon to have to first find your car in the morning after an overnight snowstorm leaves it completely buried
snowstorms are mostly an inconvenience in northern Canadian cities
leaving side streets impassible until plows finish with major routes
Three successive ice storms brought down power lines and the towers supporting them that take much longer to fix
leaving over 1.5 million people without power in the middle of Winter
A lack of power doesn’t just make it difficult for people to stay warm and feed themselves
it also makes it difficult for elected authorities and emergency personnel to plan and coordinate repairs and efforts to assist the people they represent
So while staring down endless questions about when power would potentially be restored
came up with a clever plan to at least get the town’s city hall and emergency warming shelters up and running in the immediate future
Modern locomotives run on diesel fuel instead of coal or wood as their steam-powered ancestors did
but the fuel is actually used to power onboard generators that create electricity to power the electric motors that drive the train’s wheels
modern locomotives are really just giant mobile generators
and Gadbois had recalled stories about them being used to provide power to small towns in rural northern Quebec several years prior
After some calls to the Canadian National Railway
the diesel locomotive M420W 3502 rolled into Boucherville to provide some much-needed assistance
The rail line was close to the town’s city hall
but not close enough for this unusual application
so a crane was used to lift the diesel engine off its tracks and place it on Boulevard de Montarville
From there the locomotive completed the last 1,000 feet of its journey rolling down the street under its own power while its extreme weight caused the train’s flanged wheels to cut deep tracks into the asphalt road which later had to be repaired
Cables were run from the diesel engine to the nearby municipal buildings and its throttle was set to a speed which would produce roughly 375 kilowatts of power at 60 hertz (well below the locomotive’s maximum power of around 2,000 horsepower) which is the alternating frequency the North American power system runs on
and is what all of our electronics are expecting
The diesel engine produced enough electricity to power several municipal buildings at the same time allowing the local authorities to better organize their emergency and recovery planning
A second locomotive was also brought in with the intention of using its output to power a local high school that was to be used as an emergency warming station for local residents
But getting to the shelter would have required the engine to cross an overpass
and it was eventually decided that there was a very good chance the overpass would collapse under the weight of a 260,000-pound locomotive
leaving the city with yet another emergency to deal with
and some concerned phone calls from the Canadian National Railway
it was left parked down the street on Boulevard de Montarville as an emergency backup
When power was eventually restored to the region the two diesel engines were returned to the rails and put back to work hauling cargo
but not before being sent for repairs to damage caused to their gear cases after their unorthodox cruises through Boucherville
As much as the city would have liked to keep the trains around for the next emergency (during their stay the locomotives also became quite a tourist draw with locals stopping by to have their pictures taken with the trains parked on the street) a diesel locomotive can cost well north of two million dollars and keeping one sitting idle “just in case” is a tough sell
especially when you’re borrowing someone else’s

The idea of this outdoor classroom was created to offer an additional
alternative space for the students to learn and work
and her Boucherville Elementary school (BES) team
wanted to allow students to meet their full potential while allowing them to move and feel comfortable in their space
The outside space will be used as much as possible
A friendship bench is available for any child feeling alone needing someone to notice him/her
a social circle for group conversations in comfortable seating and an academic area for learning
The main conference platform is suitable for a whole class to come and receive a lecture or work on an assignment
Big tables are also available to play games
build stem challenges or to create beautiful masterpieces
Sensitizing the students to the environment and the gifts nature has to offer was one of the main priorities
The beautiful garden is the highlight of the outdoor classroom because it symbolizes the role in the students' lives and education
we must help them grow into the best human beings they can be
This class will also grow and improve in time to better meet their needs
as it will continue to live for a very long time
Numerous research clearly demonstrates that children who spend more time outdoors are healthier
Spending more time outside tends to raise individuals to be more sensitive towards the environment but also towards one another
Boucherville Elementary School is proud to launch its first outdoor class
The event highlighted special guests such as Boucherville Mayor
planting flower bulbs alongside BES Governing Board Chair
BES students sang the theme song from Zootopia while other students were bucket drumming to the tune
Drinks and homemade snacks were also offered
This project would not have been possible without the help of so many people
who generously participated in the fundraiser
the many businesses who donated items for the lottery

Riverside School Board's Material Resource Department for its valuable advice
Without such a reliable group of volunteers
