is a lifetime achievement award given annually to one community member with a distinguished history of service to the city of St
The Charlemagne Award is a tribute to the vision of St. Charles’ 16th mayor, CV Amenoff, who wrote the short story, “The Legend of Charlemagne.”
Amenoff’s story personifies the four bronze fox statues on the Main Street Bridge, said to be Charlemagne’s four sons whom he left to guard and guide the city in becoming “a community where men can live, can work, can be educated, can worship and can play.”
The four foxes, like those who receive the award, are said to embody the city’s four-pronged mission statement: “Heritage. Community. Service. Opportunity.”
In years past, the winner was selected in secret by the Chamber of Commerce and revealed during the ceremony. This year, for the first time in the award’s history, community members voted to nominate candidates and select the winner.
Chamber member and Elgin Community College marketing director Ashley Zeman presented the L.E.A.P Award to First American Bank branch manager Daphne Velez. L.E.A.P. stands for Leadership, Excellence, Achievement and Professionalism, and the award is given annually to a Chamber member who has provided exceptional support to other women.
Civic Image Awards were presented at the ceremony to chamber members whose humanitarian efforts, civic initiatives or personal dedication have positively impacted the city and enhanced the community’s image.
Professional consultant, local activist and frequent volunteer Albert “Bo” Smith, as well as founders of local nonprofit Kendall’s Kindness, Jim and Kim Maffia, were honored with Civic Image Awards during the ceremony.
Murphy thanked his fellow nominees, the chamber and past Charlemagne winners in accepting the award.
“This evening is not about me, it’s about all who have given a little extra to make a difference in our community,” Murphy said. “I am here today feeling very humble and honored to have been nominated for this award.”

A medieval silk seal bag dating from the reign of King Henry III has gone on public display for the first time in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries at Westminster Abbey following the discovery by scholars that it is a perfect match to the silk cloth used to wrap the remains of the Emperor Charlemagne who is buried in Aachen Cathedral in Germany
The discovery has been revealed in the December issue of The Burlington Magazine
the monthly publication devoted to the fine and decorative arts
The magazine has published a study by academics from Westminster Abbey
and the Universities of Aberystwyth and Berne which shows that the silk used for Charlemagne’s burial shroud and a seal bag in the Abbey’s collection are very likely to have originated from the same weavers
Comparison between Charlemagne’s burial shroud (left) and Henry III silk bag (right)
The academics compared the silk fabrics and found them both to have the same design of white hares and floral patterns in gold
Charlemagne (748 – 814) ruled over a huge empire in the 8th century
uniting most of Western and Central Europe
and was the first recognised emperor to rule from the west after the fall of the Roman Empire
He died in 814 but was re-buried in the karlsschrein (Charles's shrine) at Aachen Cathedral in 1215
The shrine was last opened in 1988 when photos were taken of the silk fabric of the burial shroud
It is these pictures studied by the experts which have helped prove a match with the silk from the Abbey’s seal bag
he promised to return them all to the Abbey within eighteen months
A promise which he kept as far as is known
formerly believed to have originated in Sicily
is now thought to have been spun in the 12th century
the small piece at the Abbey originates from a separate silk but would have been produced by the same weavers on the same loom
It remains a mystery about how the Abbey received such a piece of high value silk but a possible theory offered by Matthew Payne
is that the silk could have been a gift from Henry III's brother
Richard Earl of Cornwall who is known to have given precious cloths to the Abbey
Richard was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1257 which was over 400 years after his predecessor Charlemagne
The silk seal bag will be on display in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries at Westminster Abbey until Easter 2025. Book your ticket to view it today

has gone on public display for the first time in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries at Westminster Abbey
Scholars have discovered that this rare artifact is a perfect match to the silk cloth used to wrap the remains of Emperor Charlemagne
who is buried in Aachen Cathedral in Germany
This remarkable discovery is detailed in the December issue of The Burlington Magazine
a publication dedicated to the fine and decorative arts
A study by researchers from Westminster Abbey
and the Universities of Aberystwyth and Berne reveals that the silk fabrics used for Charlemagne’s burial shroud and the Abbey’s seal bag likely originated from the same weavers
The comparison of the silk fabrics showed both feature identical designs of white hares and floral patterns in gold
Though the colours have faded over the centuries
the similarity in craftsmanship is unmistakable
often called the “Father of Europe,” ruled over a vast empire that united much of Western and Central Europe
marking the restoration of imperial rule in the West after the fall of the Roman Empire
Charlemagne was reburied in the Karlsschrein (Charles’s Shrine) at Aachen Cathedral in 1215
when photographs of the burial shroud were taken
These images have allowed experts to compare the shroud’s fabric with the silk from the Abbey’s seal bag
The silk seal bag houses a wax seal—the Great Seal of King Henry III—once attached to an inventory of jewels and treasures from Edward the Confessor’s shrine at Westminster Abbey
Compiled in 1267 during a period of financial strain for Henry III
the inventory documented items that were pawned to Italian merchants to raise funds
The king pledged to return these precious items within 18 months—a promise he appears to have honoured
previously thought to have been produced in Sicily
is now believed to have been woven in the 12th century
While the silk used for the Abbey’s seal bag is a separate piece
experts conclude it was produced on the same loom by the same weavers
How such a valuable piece of silk found its way to Westminster Abbey remains a mystery
Keeper of the Muniments at Westminster Abbey
suggests a plausible theory: the silk could have been a gift from Henry III’s brother
who was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1257—more than 400 years after Charlemagne—was known to have donated precious fabrics to the Abbey
The silk seal bag will remain on display in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries at Westminster Abbey until Easter 2025. Visitors can book tickets to view this extraordinary artifact

Angela Merkel and Margaret Thatcher are often lumped together as centre-right stalwarts with a knack for political survival
They governed very differently—one menacingly wielding her handbag
the other patiently cajoling coalition partners—but for so long that by the time they stepped down even teenagers could not recall anyone else having been in charge
But their legacies look more different still
Though Thatcher was forced out by her own party in 1990 as her poll numbers slid
she has since topped a poll of Britain’s best post-war leaders; Sir Keir Starmer
last month faced brickbats for merely moving the portrait of his predecessor-but-eight to a different part of Downing Street
Mrs Merkel opted to retire after four terms
still so popular that both her party’s candidate and the opposition fellow (now in office) tried to claim her mantle
Yet every month that goes by brings a reminder of how her reign propelled Germany into the mire

A silk bag dating back to the reign of King Henry III of England appears to have a link to Charlemagne
Now on display at Westminster Abbey, the silk’s pattern of white hares and delicate flowers is a match for the burial shroud encasing Charlemagne’s remains at Aachen Cathedral in Germany, Artnet reported, almost certainly meaning the two pieces were made by the same weaver
Researchers are still puzzling over how the silk, which dates back to 1267 and was likely woven in Islamic Spain or the Eastern Mediterranean, arrived in England. One academic said studying the bags in the Abbey’s collection would “open a new window to historians on the trade and cultural connections of the Middle Ages.”

WASHINGTON (TNND) — Radio host Charlamagne the God grilled Caitlyn Jenner on Monday
saying Jenner’s support of President-elect Donald Trump makes it acceptable to misgender the famed Olympian
announced in 2015 she had transitioned to female
She remains a strong supporter of Trump and has repeatedly targeted Democratic leaders for pushing certain transgender policies
or referring to someone as a gender with which they do not identify
is considered highly offensive to members of the LGBT community
the host referred to Jenner as a man and accused her of being hypocritical
“That is not how any of this should work.”
added Jenner will never be able to escape her past as a “rich white male” no matter how hard she tries
“At the end of the day you can change the top layer—what you was
who you was before you got here—and what you are is a rich white male and that’s why I keep saying ‘him’ when I shouldn’t be
but I can’t stop seeing Caitlyn as a right white male.”
Jenner reposted a clip Tuesday from McKelvey’s show via X that included a caption by Fox News commentator Tomi Lahren
“If you don’t support men in women’s sports
you are transphobic BUT you can demean @Caitlyn_Jenner (a great ally of women’s sports integrity) and it’s fine because Caitlyn supports Trump?”
She also reposted another comment reading “you know what's funny: @Caitlyn_Jenner wouldn't mind being ‘misgendered’ because Caitlyn is not a virtue-signalling snowflake.”
Jenner denounced President Joe Biden for proclaiming Transgender Day of Visibility on the same day as Easter Sunday
despite the day falling on March 31 since 2009
“I am absolutely disgusted that Joe Biden has declared the most Holy of Holy days – a self proclaimed devout Catholic – as Transgender Day of Visibility,” she posted on X
“The only thing you should be declaring on this day is ‘HE is Risen’.”

Limited seats are still available, and registration will close on April 26. Those interested should RSVP on the Chamber’s website as soon as possible
at the country club at 4405 Royal and Ancient Drive
The awards ceremony will take place during dinner
This year, in addition to a new venue, the recipient of the Charlemagne award was decided by votes from community members for the first time
the winner was selected in secret by the Chamber of Commerce and revealed during the awards ceremony
but this year community members had a say in who receives the honor
Community members nominated and cast their votes for three candidates
The winner will be announced during the ceremony
Karas is the leading member of the Karas Restaurant Group
which operates 17 establishments in the area and has been serving Fox Valley communities since 1974
McNally is the owner and CEO of McNally’s Heating and Cooling
a company he started out of a van off Kirk Road and grew into a titan of the HVAC industry
Murphy is the owner of Midwest Compost, member of the Chamber of Commerce and frequent volunteer at community events. While he is the only nominee to settle in St. Charles as an adult, the Iowa native developed the same love for the St. Charles community shared by everyone who chooses to raise their family there.

One of Europe’s most influential historical figures is celebrating his comeback to the series as a leader in Civilization 7 – Charlemagne returns for the first time since his appearance in Civ 4
the powerful King of the Franks and Lombards was crowned Roman Emperor in the year 800 by the Pope
which laid the foundations for the Holy Roman Empire
His physical depiction in Civ 7 appears to have been inspired by his later years rather than his time as a ruthless conqueror
because Charlemagne comes with a bit of a dadbod – the man clearly enjoyed his feasts
Though we may not think of the mighty ruler with a beer belly
We also know that Einhard can mostly be trusted
because scientists dug up the emperor’s skeleton for investigations
confirming that information like his height conforms with the historical sources
Some of Charlemagne’s kit in Civilization 7 is based on his later life as well – and explains how he acquired the dadbod
increases his relationship with the ruler who triggers the most Celebrations in the game by making their population happy
Charlemagne’s Unique Ability is called Father of Europe
It enables Military and Science buildings to receive Happiness adjacency bonuses for Quarters and grants him free cavalry units when he enters a Celebration
all of his cavalry units will be stronger than usual – so don’t worry
even if he’s largely inspired by the jovial uncle phase of his life
Civ 7’s Charlemagne retains some of the steel that made him master of Europe
His Unique Ability, in fact, potentially makes him quite the monstrous neighbor – pair him up with Maurya Indie in the Antiquity Age and the Mongols in the Exploration Age
and you’ll create a nearly unstoppable cavalry force for two thirds of the game
giving you enough time to set up a victory condition in the Modern Age

A small silk bag that has been in Westminster Abbey’s archives for centuries has gone on display to highlight a remarkable discovery about its origins
The silk bag dates to the reign of King Henry III (1207-1272) and is attached to the bottom of an inventory of the jewels and precious items on Edward the Confessor’s shrine within the Abbey
The inventory was needed because King Henry III needed money and pawned the jewels to Italian merchants
promising to return them to the Abbey within 18 months
At the bottom of the document are two seals
one for the Abbey and the much larger Great Seal of King Henry III
The King’s seal is protected in a silk bag and although the King’s seal is important
it’s the fabric that the bag is made from that has excited historians
That small silk bag is now thought to be a perfect match to the silk cloth used to wrap the remains of Emperor Charlemagne
who died in 814 but was reburied in Germany’s Aachen Cathedral in 1215
It remains a mystery how the Abbey received such a piece of high-value silk
offers a possible theory that the silk could have been a gift from Henry III’s brother
who is known to have given precious cloths to the Abbey
Richard was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1257
over 400 years after his predecessor Charlemagne
The discovery was revealed in the December issue of The Burlington Magazine
which has published a study by academics from Westminster Abbey
and the Universities of Aberystwyth and Berne
The academics compared the silk fabrics and found that they both had the same design of white hares and floral patterns in gold
The silk seal bag is now on display in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries at Westminster Abbey and will be until Easter 2025
The seal and document are near the entrance to the Galleries
at the end of a row of other important documents from the Abbey’s archive
It’s somewhat darker in reality than the photo from the Abbey suggests
but you can still make out the details and see the embroidery that gave away the clues to its origins
they’re easy to overlook as just another document with a big wax seal attached to it
to know it’s from the same fabric design that was used in the reburial of the first(ish) Holy Roman Emperor is undeniably a tiny bit spine-tingling when you stand in front of it
Note that entry to the Galleries is an additional £5 on top of the usual entry price – best to book tickets in advance
I’d actually suggest joining the Abbey Association which gives you unlimited visits for an annual membership fee of £45
Bearing in mind that a single ticket plus the Gallery will set you back £35
it’s worthwhile joining the Association
if only for the privilege of jumping the queue to go inside

During the Tuesday episode, around the 53-minute mark of the link above, co-host Jess Hilarious shared a report that alleged that Williams was made to look "incapacitated" during her 2024 Lifetime special.
Charlemagne agreed with the accusation, calling it "cap" that the former talk and radio show host is disabled.
"I spoke to Wendy over the holidays," he began. "She seemed perfectly fine to me. Wendy sounded like she could do radio tomorrow if she wanted to."
Charlemagne added that Williams contacted him and shared that he doesn't know what "incapacitated means in regards to dementia."
"Ain't nothing incapacitated about Wendy Williams," he said, adding, "She didn't skip a beat."
"When she called me, she was like, 'Why you answering the phone like we just we just spoke yesterday?' ... She wanted me to be more excited."
Charlemagne explained that he was washing his hands in the bathroom while speaking to Williams and accidentally tapped to record the call, which alerted Williams.
"She was like, 'Are you recording me?'" he explained. "And then she was like, 'No, you wouldn't do that.' So she's perfectly normal, from what I heard."
Reports surfaced last year that Williams was "cognitively impaired and permanently incapacitated," according to lawyers for her guardian. Meanwhile, she's recently been seen in public, including attending the college graduation of her son, 14-year-old Kevin Hunter Jr.

Europe today is mesmerized by the crown and the crown jewels of Charlemagne—just as Adolf Hitler was
The late European Parliamentarian Otto von Habsburg
a descendant of the Habsburg dynasty that ruled the Holy Roman Empire for 400 years
talked about the crown of Charlemagne meaning a great deal to the Germans
Other nations hardly recognize this artifact
but they should not be blind to its significance to Germany
“We do possess a European symbol which belongs to all nations of Europe equally,” Habsburg said
“This is the crown of the Holy Roman Empire
which embodies the tradition of Charlemagne.” Hitler was passionate about obtaining the crown jewels of Charlemagne
Hitler and Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini are unquestionably a part of the tradition of Charlemagne
yet European leaders today skip right past them to focus on Charlemagne himself
he came to believe that God had replaced the Jews with the Germans as the chosen people of God
the insignia of the First Reich—the imperial crown
At the presentation of these symbols of imperialism
he solemnly vowed that they would remain in Nuremberg forever” (John Toland
No one could take the crown jewels away from Hitler
They became a crucial part of his Third Reich
like they were in Charlemagne’s First Reich
I was in attendance to see United States President Bill Clinton receive the Charlemagne Prize
When former German President Roman Herzog received that prize on May 8
the destiny of our continent has revolved around the choice between a cohesive or a fragmented Europe
made his own particular choice: the first unification of Europe
the truth must be told: only by wading through a sea of blood
Herzog was sort of bragging about the violence of Charlemagne, which inspired Hitler to cause the death of 60 million people in World War ii! Charlemagne was the second head of the Holy Roman Empire; Hitler and Mussolini were the sixth (request our free book The Holy Roman Empire in Prophecy for proof)
We will soon see this superpower in Europe paired down to 10 “kings,” or 10 main nations (Revelation 17:12)
When a German leader and a French leader met in 1978 in Aachen
to discuss the formation of the European Union
they felt like the spirit of Charlemagne was brooding over them
Bernard Connolly wrote in The Rotten Heart of Europe
European Union leaders are working to re-create the empire of Charlemagne
but most of them will not like the beast they are reawakening
A modern Charlemagne is about to come on the scene as the German strongman (Daniel 8:23)
Jesus Christ will personally defeat him and his Holy Roman Empire (verse 25)
creating a 200-mile river of blood the height of a horse’s bridle (Revelation 14:20)
But not before this seventh and final resurrection of the Holy Roman Empire scourges the Earth with more death and destruction than the previous six combined
The crown jewels of Charlemagne include an orb—a sign of the world
The imperial sword shows us how they intend to accomplish this goal
Hitler loved Charlemagne and wanted to imitate him in every way possible
wading through a sea of blood trying to conquer Europe
He became fiercely obsessed with the crown jewels while growing up in Vienna
“He insisted … that his early years in Vienna were absolutely crucial to his career because ‘at that time I formed an image of the world and a view of life which became the foundation for my actions …
I have had to change nothing’” (Robert G.L
“This was the time in which the greatest change I was ever to experience took place in me,” Hitler wrote in Mein Kampf
“From a feeble cosmopolite I had turned into a fanatical anti-Semite.”
Hitler’s goal was to conquer the world—and he almost did
he thought of himself as the messiah of his people
He was heavily influenced by Satan the devil
Something clicked in the Pasewalk Hospital
It was there at the turn of the year 1918–1919 that Hitler resolved his identity problem and reached what he called ‘the most decisive decision of my life.’ For now
He must answer the ‘voices’ that he said he heard—like Joan of Arc—distinctly calling him as he lay in his hospital bed
The voices told him to rescue his Motherland from the Jews who had violated her
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill speculated that Hitler’s motivation came from Munich in 1919
not from Vienna and the crown jewels of Charlemagne in 1910
He didn’t understand that Hitler’s political ideology originated with the vision of world domination he saw in the crown jewels
Watch for Europe to become more and more excited about those “sacred” jewels
The bloody passion of Charlemagne will reawaken and shock the world
“The [European] Community is living largely by the heritage of the Holy Roman Empire
though the great majority of the people who live by it don’t know by what heritage they live,” Otto von Habsburg said
The spirit of Charlemagne is brooding over Europe today
President Franklin Roosevelt and Churchill pledged: “It is our inflexible purpose to destroy German militarism and Nazism
and to ensure Germany will never again be able to disturb the peace of the world.” How quickly we humans forget history
Germany is arming itself as never before and already has access to nuclear bombs
This war-making nation needs only a strong leader like Charlemagne to galvanize Europe
He will take power through deception and flattery
pledging peace but bringing war (Daniel 11:21)
admitted that rearming Germany would be a calculated risk
The Allies spent only two years denazifying Germany before turning that project over to the Germans
It is past time we looked to God instead of men for world peace
We must hear and heed this warning to avoid being victimized by the 10 kings of the seventh and final resurrection of the Holy Roman Empire: “And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings
which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast
and shall give their power and strength unto the beast
and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords
and King of kings: and they that are with him are called
faithful: That could be you if you yield yourself to God before the Second Coming of Jesus Christ
The slaughterers in Europe will be slaughtered by Christ
Then He will rule the world with a rod of iron and bring all mankind peace and joy

Back in May, Charlemagne pointed out, “Drake is half white. There’s people that have real vested interest in Drake. That is a multi-billion dollar entity. They like—you got to protect your neck. Fck all that rap sht.”
Fast-forward to now, Drake has taken legal action against Universal Music Group (UMG) and Spotify, accusing them of inflating streams for Kendrick Lamar’s diss track Not Like Us.
The track climbed to the top of the charts, allegedly with help from bots, reduced licensing fees, and social media influencers paid by UMG. Drake even claimed Siri misdirected users asking for his album to Kendrick’s track.
This legal battle is the latest in a long-standing tension between the two rap icons.
As you know, their beef escalated this year with Not Like Us, which Kendrick surprise-dropped amid Drake’s album release.
As Drake fights these claims in court, it seems rap beef is hitting new heights with streaming wars and lawsuits included.

Expand(From left) Charlie Murphy, Bob Karas and Brian McNally are all finalists for the 2025 Charlemagne Award given by the St. Charles Area Chamber of Commerce.
Like a true and modern mythical legend, the annual Charlemagne Award presented by the St. Charles Area Chamber of Commerce is a deeply honored tradition with a most unique history.
This year, the 57th Annual Charlemagne Awards celebration will take place Friday, May 2, at the Royal Fox Country Club in St. Charles. The event will honor the best-of-the-best in the St. Charles community with the backdrop of a celebratory event complete with a delicious dinner, open bar, dancing and tidbits of 1968 history. It’s the significant year in which the Charlemagne Award was established.
The lifetime achievement Charlemagne Award gives recognition to one community member each year who emulates a distinguished history of commitment and service to the City of St. Charles.
The St. Charles Area Chamber is pleased to announce that three dedicated and formidable St. Charles supporters who have been nominated for this year’s Charlemagne Award: Bob Karas, owner of the Karas Restaurant Group; Brian McNally, owner and CEO of McNally’s Heating and Cooling; and Charlie Murphy, owner of Midwest Compost.
Each has a long history of volunteerism and dedication to the St. Charles community and reflects one or more of the four pillars on which the Charlemagne Award is based: civic; education; community/recreation; and religious/worship. Their involvement epitomizes a true commitment that makes a difference.
Karas oversees the Karas Restaurant Group which owns and operates a total of 17 restaurants within the Fox Valley area, including Alexander’s Café, Old Republic Kitchen & Grill, Rookies All American Bar & Grill, The Village Squire Restaurant, Rookie’s Rochaus, and the new Squire Ale House.
The family business was founded by the late Paul Karas, father of Bob Karas, and his uncle George Karas. A family man and father of seven, Bob supports many Chamber and local events and non-profits, including the Salvation Army, Cal’s Angels, and Project Mobility. In addition, Karas recently received an Honorary Alumni Award from Judson University in Elgin.
McNally started his family-owned and community focused business in 2013 and it comprises a team of over 50 employees. The company provides a wide variety of services and products and Brian is proud his employees are “honest, reliable, and knowledgeable”. The business has been voted as one of the best by Shaw Media readers and most recently, he was named one of the Chicago Titan 100 honorees recognizing the top 100 CEO’s and C-level executives in Chicago.
McNally is actively involved in local St. Charles community organizations. He serves on the boards of the St. Charles History Museum, and the St. Charles Business Alliance, including recently serving on the board of the St. Charles Area Chamber of Commerce. His commitment extends to the support of the local St. Charles Arts Council and the nonprofit CASA Kane County.
Midwest Compost received the Chamber’s Business Category Award in 2019, and in 2023, Charlie was honored with the Chairman’s Award. He is on the board of the Illinois Food Scrap and Composting Coalition with a strong commitment that composting is a “no-brainer” and greener way to dispose of food waste.
Community members, Chamber members, family members, and guests from the St. Charles area are all warmly invited to honor the award nominees and the announcement of this year’s Charlemage recipient.
Additional honorees of the evening will include:

This year’s honorees are Albert “Bo” Smith, Professional Consultant, and Jim and Kim Maffia of Kendall’s Kindness.
The Chamber established the ongoing Charlemagne Award in 1968 and its notoriety lives on as a prestigious and highly-anticipated event. Its origins began with a short story, “The Legend of Charlemagne”, written by the 16th Mayor of St. Charles, Clarence “C.V.” Amenoff, who served from 1969-73. The story heralded the assets of his beloved City and the award was originated by Amenoff.

Be forewarned before you trip down this rabbit hole; things get fairly strange
but yours was kitchen clean.” There was only one place in the San Francisco valley where you could get acid of that Lemon Pledge purity — enter the protagonist of the song
the famed narcotics chemist Owsley Stanley: the premiere acid man of the East Coast
Although calling him a soundman is also a misnomer
he basically mobilised music to the point that it could actually be played in stadiums
Aside from mixing the wall of sound that blasted The Dead’s gigs into a sonic maelstrom that changed the shape of live music and assisting in the design of their now-iconic logo
Stanley was also the first known individual to casually begin manufacturing LSD en masse
it is alleged that Stanley produced at least five million doses of some of the finest wall-shifting tabs to ever grace the market
The musical Heisenberg basked in the good times of legality as he
a skilled chemist and scion of the uber-wealthy Cargill-MacMillan family
there are many questions as to why it took three years for laws to be passed against the substance—a substance that Charles Manson and many others who stepped one toke over the line dabbled into a debauched degree
the CIA knew of its dangerous potential more than anyone
the organisation began an illegal programme that experimented with the potential of using LSD and other psychoactive drugs to achieve mind control
This is not a conspiracy theory; this is all declassified truth… somehow
the CIA bought the entire world’s supply of LSD for $240,000
They had so much of it that they gave 297mg of it to Tusko
But this beleaguered animal wasn’t the only testing subject. With copious acid to administer, the CIA soon looked to enlist volunteers for testing. Robert Hunter, who would go on to be the Grateful Dead’s chief lyricist
“I couldn’t figure out why they were paying me good money to take these psychedelics,” Hunter told Reuters when reflecting on his involvement in MK-ultra
and the fourth week it was all three at once.”
He explains that the aim of this psychoactive cocktail was to see “if I was more hypnotisable when I was on them than I was when I wasn’t on them
Part of the reason for this was because he was out of his gaud
He couldn’t even concentrate on what they were saying
let alone carry out some covert mission for them
MK-ultra might have failed to achieve mind control
but it did succeed in figuring out the inverse: how to make someone lose control of their own mind
While many acidheads in The Dead would argue otherwise and explain to you that LSD can heighten your control and bring about elevated states of consciousness
the troubling flipside of people falling off the rails and dropping out of the counterculture movement altogether proves that the inverse is just as possible
Stanley’s own life even serves as evidence as he eventually left the frontline of his strange and noble cause behind and headed over to the Australian outback—but for a time
not only did he enjoy the dealer’s boon of administrative oversight
Stanley and Cargill simply shifted production to a lab in Denver
and began brightening the daydreams of counterculture kids once more
Their new headquarters were stationed across the street from Denver Zoo
and tales are bountiful in the region’s subterranean realms of old acidheads staring agog at a gibbon or some other higher simian and having evolutionary epiphanies whizz into their addled minds while the funky primates looked on wondering why the hippie who just shat his pantaloons had been staring at them for hours
Alas, the famed zoo trips are a side note that has nothing to do with Steely Dan. But the question of why the kids of the counterculture were able to freely get high on Stanley’s wicked acid supply remains a pertinent one
It has been posited by many that the answer comes from the time when Stanley was finally arrested in 1970
“You watched that high of the hippie thing descend into drug depression,” Joni Mitchell once said
then we went through a decade of basic apathy where my generation sucked its thumb and then just decided to be greedy and pornographic.” They dropped out in a different way—in a politically nullified way
and flower power fell into the comedown of a reflective dirge
acid was largely traded for less cerebral substances
it just perhaps embarked on one trip too many
Whether the acid-drenched demise of the anti-establishment movement had anything to do with the establishment itself tactfully turning a blind eye to dealings while routinely finding out that it wasn’t a substance to be messed with in their own experiments (i.e
giving 297mg of LSD to an elephant and almost immediately killing it) is a tinfoil point for another day
However, one element requiring less judicious scrutiny is how many folks in Stanley’s milieu succumbed to the sad aftereffects
You can hardly find a single member of the Bay Area movement who didn’t suffer some tragic fate
or controversial circumstance or fade into strange obscurity as though whisked away by the piped piper of trailer parks
This twisted irony is something that didn’t go amiss with Steely Dan
the most side-eyed band in rock ‘n’ roll history—if
they can even be said to be of rock ‘n’ roll history given their disdain for the genre
the ‘60s were over when Steely Dan decided to revisit the zeitgeist in 1976; in fact
it had crumbled like Charlemagne’s Roman Empire
While the lyrical verse of a car running out of gas might form a nice metaphor for this in the song
it also hints at the eventual arrest of Stanley after his car ran out of fuel and the police discovered substances scattered around it when they subsequently picked him up
proving Fagen and Walter Becker’s eternal love for an allegory or double entendre
in a jazzy jam that sees guitarist Larry Carlton produce a solo that he claims is his career high— a fittingly frenzied place for such a feat
from nonprofit fundraisers to holiday parades
and it’s a safe bet that McNally Heating and Cooling sponsored it
While you’ve undoubtedly seen his name via his company’s logo around town
the man behind the business’ generosity and commitment to his city is Brian McNally
McNally is one of three nominees for the 2025 Charlemagne Award, presented by the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce. This year, the Chamber has invited the community to vote for the winner.
with McNally having been nominated for the city’s highest honor – the Charlemagne Award
having spent his formative years in Itasca
He attended Ferson Creek Elementary and graduated from St
McNally wasted no time starting his career
He was Environmental Protection Agency certified as an HVAC technician by age 18
which he managed to earn by attending high school courses for half the day and trade school on the side
McNally went into the HVAC industry and spent 11 years working and gaining experience before starting McNally’s in 2012
What started as a local small business and a trailer parked off Dean Street has grown to become an industry leader across several counties in only 13 years
McNally’s business outgrew the trailer in about a year
so he bought his first storefront downtown in 2013
McNally’s has continued to outgrow its facilities
forcing three moves so far with plans to build a new facility in St
McNally’s Heating and Cooling now employs more than 50 people
and its service area spans across five counties
south to Kendall County and east to Cook County
McNally said what keeps him and his family in St
Charles is the sense of community and hometown pride
McNally said his involvement with community events began with parades and Chamber events after becoming a Chamber member in 2014 and never stopped growing from there
from community art shows to charitable events for nonprofits such as Lazarus House
“We started to become a more prevalent sponsor over the years,” McNally said
we just started becoming more involved and getting involved in different kinds of nonprofits.”
One of the biggest programs McNally’s sponsors is the Feel the Love event
McNally has partnered with HVAC giant Lennox to install brand-new HVAC systems to families in need of comfort
Lennox selects recipients from across the country and provides the systems
Partnering dealers such as McNally donate their time and resources to provide the installation
In addition to using his business to give back to the community, McNally also gives a great deal of his personal time to St. Charles, serving as an executive committee member of the St. Charles Business Alliance and vice president of the St. Charles History Museum.
Left to Right: Artist CJ Hungerman, McNally’s Heating & Cooling Owner Brian McNally, St. Charles Mayor Lora Vitek at the mural dedication in downtown St. Charles on June 30, 2023. (St. Charles Business Alliance)
McNally also contributes to the schools he was educated in, giving back to students by assisting with programs such as St. Charles East High School’s Shark Tank and HVAC shadow programs.
“I just felt like I probably had gained a lot from the community, like the community had supported me through my growth and I just found it rewarding to give back,” McNally said.
The list of community programs, nonprofits and events he’s supported, whether through sponsorships or by volunteering his time, stretches far beyond the city limits of St. Charles.
McNally’s business also is a member of the chambers of commerce in Geneva, Batavia, Naperville, Oswego, northern Kane County, Wheaton and Elgin, where he supports dozens of additional nonprofits and community events each year.
McNally said he chose to stay and start his family in St. Charles because of the positive experience he had in his youth.
“When I started a family, I just wanted them to have the same experience that I had in the community,” McNally said. “It still has a small-town feel, everybody looks out for each other, the business community is very supportive of each other. It just feels like everybody wants to see everybody succeed.”
McNally has attended the annual Charlemagne Awards ceremony for the past decade, but never guessed he would be in the running for the community’s biggest award.
“It comes as a total surprise,” McNally said. “It’s just such an honor to even be mentioned as a nominee when I look at the people who have received the award before me.”
McNally said winning the Charlemagne Award would be an incredible honor and extremely humbling, and would encourage him to continue the work he’s been doing.
While he refrained from campaigning for votes, McNally said, historically, Charlemagne Award recipients are pillars of the community, and said residents should “vote for the nominee that you think has the best merits.”
The 57th annual Charlemagne Awards soiree will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, May 2, at the Royal Fox Country Club, 4405 Royal and Ancient Drive in St. Charles. Cost is $175 a person. The deadline to register to attend is April 26.

Charlemagne Cocktail Bar, tucked above the new French brasserie Cafe Renee
continues with the establishment's European flair — this time
the entrance to this King West spot's secret bar is the kind of riveting secret you'd hope for from a classic speakeasy
Heading up the unassuming front stairs of the restaurant's main floor seems to only provide you with a peak of their teeming kitchen window
But a luminous and glowing frosted window off to the side beckons
you're brought into a world absolutely contrasting its downstairs sister space
Leave behind the astir crowds and platters of stacked food for this sexy
mellowed with dimmed lighting and swanky jazz
Charlemagne boasts a masterly and experimental cocktail menu, helmed by Beverage Director Angus Edmundson, who previously slung Insta-worthy potions at Toronto’s top cocktail bar, BarChef
Angus is in the midst of the floor and hands-on behind the bar
a svelte shadow amongst the crowd and his fellow staff
the moment you enter the room the charming staff have you feeling swooped under a wing and tucked into a precious nook (literally)
We're first presented with the Verona ($24)
from Angus' selection of what he's most proud to show off
and we shamefully try not to fawn over the impressive rectangular ice cube that takes up the whole glass
one would anticipate a martini's flavour profile: bitter and liquor-forward
cotton candy-like note catches the tongue while you curiously stare down an olive with each gulp
The olive represents the green olive leaf-infused gin
The moment the Flying Honeymoon ($26) reaches us
our confused and suspicious eyes dart around the room to see if anyone's questioning us — or rather
to pair with bell pepper-infused white rum
you're instantly hit with a bold vegetal kick; if a strong and smoky drink fits your preference
you're provided a faint dash of sweetness thanks to the rum — but only faint; prepare yourself for a mature
robust drink.Another boozy sip is the Gilded Rose ($25)
my nose tickles with every sip from the bright astringency
It's no unexpected surprise — verjus is a juice made of unripe grapes and crab apples
If the dark nature of the room was lulling you into slumber
a sip of this punchy beverage will wake your senses right up.Caught up in the opulent yet cozy atmosphere of the room
tucked away from the city though smack within it
we persuade one more drink out of Angus and his team (though it's not hard — he's proud of his product
and knows it deserves to be indulged). He caps the eve off for us with a sweet treat: the Bird's Punch ($25)
Benedictine and Angostura blend with cinnamon
lemon and — of all things — nutritional yeast and what's been titled "Bird's custard"
nut-like flavour from the yeast and an egginess from whatever I think "bird's custard" might be (I'm pleased to note Bird is simply the brand name
with custard being the operative word here)
it tastes nothing like I imagined — it tastes like my childhood
there's a warm wintery spice in there from the cinnamon that glides by your palette under the prominent sugariness of the drink
Though I know his creation stemmed from a London inspiration
I'm instantly reminded of the Portuguese tarts I wolfed down as a child
packed with citrusy and spiced notes among the egg custard; there's even a pastry crust flake topping the ice cube here
It's worth the splurge; there's an intimacy to it
