multiple 911 calls were made reporting the fire at Bursey Manufacturing Inc
When firefighters with the Conception Bay South Fire Department arrived on the scene they found smoke and fire coming from the large warehouse
Within a half hour a request was made to receive support from the St

firefighters were able to stop the blaze from reaching several dangerous tanks which contained flammable and explosive contents
Fire crews remained on the scene into the late night hours
An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing

One man was injured after a shooting in Conception Bay South this weekend.
At 9:15 p.m. on Sunday, police responded to the shooting on Fowler’s Road near the Peacekeepers Way interchange. One man was injured and taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. A vehicle was also damaged as a result.
The suspect is described as a Caucasian male with a dark complexion in his 50’s. He is possibly 6 feet tall, has a heavy build, and at the time was wearing a black jacket, jeans, and a bike helmet with a clear visor and red and yellow pattern (like flames). He was operating a dual purpose dirt bike that was red in color and had a headlight.
The RNC is appealing to the public for help in identifying the person responsible and is asking those who live in the area to review any video footage (including dash cam) between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. Sunday.
Investigators are also looking to speak with the occupants of a Honda Civic that was seen in the area at the time of the offence.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the RNC at 709-729-8000.
charged with unlawfully transferring a weapon
A 13-year-old student of Villanova Junior High School in Conception Bay South is facing a charge of possession of a prohibited weapon after a set of brass knuckles was reportedly found at the school
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) confirmed it responded to a weapons-related call at Villanova Junior High late Friday morning
the RNC said it has charged a 27-year-old woman from St
John’s with unlawfully transferring a weapon
The RNC confirmed the woman is not the parent of the 13-year-old accused
Parents were not notified of the incident until Monday evening
when school principal Dale Lambe circulated an email confirming that a prohibited item was brought into the school and that the item in question posed no threat to the school community and that the RNC was called in to assist
whose name is being withheld to protect their child’s identity
has reason to believe the weapon in question was a set of brass knuckles
told us that they had seen a student with brass knuckles,” the parent said
It was (described as) this metal device that would go over your fingers.”
Through conversing with their child and other parents
the parent learned that intervention from one student may have resulted staff becoming aware of the item
“Another student had acted quickly,” the parent said
“They looked at the student who had the brass knuckles and said
give them to me and I’ll hide them in my locker for you.’ That student proceeded to bring them down to the office and turn them in and told them who actually had them.”
While the parent was hesitant to cast any blame on the administration of Villanova Junior High and felt they acted swiftly and appropriately in their safe handling of the situation in conjunction with the RNC
they still wonder why it took the school nearly three days to inform parents of the incident
“Villanova is usually a very good school,” they said
and they always seem to have the students’ backs
We were actually quite floored that nothing was sent home
If our child hadn’t had first-hand knowledge of it
we wouldn’t have known what had transpired
president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association (NLTA)
agrees that waiting nearly three days to inform parents of the incident feels like a long time
did its part to balance the risk of the situation
three days seems like a long time,” Langdon told The Telegram
There was no one in the building… As a parent myself
There’s a balance between operating a school
looking at the safety of the school community and respecting processes
if there was any immediate risk to the school community
The Department of Education declined The Telegram’s request for an interview and provided a short statement confirming that the incident took place and that school staff reacted once it became aware of a prohibited item on school grounds
The statement explains that the item in question served no threat to the school community and that the RNC was notified to assist school administrators
and school administrators are working to implement appropriate disciplinary action
even if the prohibited item in question didn’t pose an immediate risk to the entire school community
they still believe that a student being arrested on school grounds is something that needs to be brought to parents’ attention immediately
“We were shocked that this had transpired the way it did and we weren’t notified (until Monday),” the parent said
“It’s usually always a free flow of communication
if it’s all the bad press the school board is getting and they’re trying to reduce the number of publications on these crimes that are committed and incidents that are happening in the schools
whose organization represents the almost 7,000 teachers and teaching learning assistants in the province
says the NLTA is always concerned when they hear of weapons-related incidents in our province’s schools and says work is ongoing to continue efforts to mitigate violence in schools in Newfoundland and Labrador
“We have been working closely with government to really press the need for a heightened focus on school safety,” Langdon said
“We initiated a school safety coalition last year
We encouraged government to take that over
which included police enforcement agencies
to look at broader scale approaches to fixing issues.”

there will be plenty of changes coming when Newfoundlanders and Labradorians go to the polls
When Newfoundlanders and Labradorians head to the polls to elect a new federal government on April 28
there will be a few changes — including new names in some of the province’s seven ridings and an almost entirely new slate of candidates
Only two of the sitting MPs are running again
while three ridings have new names and some have new boundaries
has been renamed Terra Nova-The Peninsulas to better represent the district’s geography and makeup
the district’s revised boundary now includes four peninsulas: Burin
Coast of Bays-Central-Notre Dame also has a new name: Central Newfoundland
Although there aren’t significant changes to its makeup
the change was made to simplify the district’s name
John’s South-Mount Pearl has had its third name change in recent years — previously it was known as St
but it was changed in 2021 to better reflect the geographical orientation — but will now be called Cape Spear as it includes the most easterly point in North America
Newfoundland sent six Liberals and a lone Conservative — Clifford Small — to Ottawa
Five of the six sitting Liberal MPs have announced they are not re-offering in this election
and the province’s seven seats are considered pivotal in the Liberal quest to retain government
Only Small and Liberal Joanne Thompson are seeking re-election
and what’s known so far about who is running in each of the ridings
The Long Range Mountains will have a new face representing the Liberals in the Newfoundland riding in the next federal election
although who that will be has yet to be decided
She ran for the nomination in 2014 after Gerry Byrne — who had held the seat since 1996 — decided not to run
Running for the Liberal party is Don Bradshaw
well known to many in NL for his long tenure as a reporter on NTV News
Real estate broker Carol Anstey from Deer Lake will be running again under the Conservative banner in the riding — she finished a close second in the last federal election to Hutchings
who is the western representative for the provincial NDP executive
is running for federal NDP in this election
John’s East can expect a familiar face on the upcoming federal election ballot
“I am so proud to call this community my home
and I look forward to the upcoming election campaign,” Thompson said via email
a member of the New Democratic Party (NDP) who represented the riding for a year in the 1980s
from 2008 to 2015 and in 2019 until his retirement in 2021
Two other familiar faces are expected to be on the ballot in St
John’s East: David Brazil is running for the Conservatives and Mary Shortall for the NDP
Brazil is well-known provincially after he was elected to the House of Assembly in 2010 for the Tories and went on to serve as interim leader of the party before stepping down as MHA for Conception Bay East-Bell Island in December 2023
was on the ballot in the previous federal election — finishing a close second to Thompson — and has remained vocal about workers’ rights over the past four years
She currently serves as the president of the national NDP
Clifford Small has already begun his effort to be reelected as the Commons member for the renamed riding of Central Newfoundland
The Conservative Party of Canada MP was first elected to represent the riding formerly known as Coast of Bays-Central-Notre Dame in the 2021 federal election and has served as the Conservative party’s shadow minister for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and currently serves in the shadow cabinet for the Fisheries
Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard shadow portfolio and sits on the House of Commons Standing Committee of Fisheries and Oceans
Small said his volunteers have been making calls and he has been knocking on doors within his riding to get support for the coming campaign
“I picked up a lot of experience in Parliament and especially as the shadow minister for Fisheries and Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard,” Small said of why he thinks he’s the best person to represent Central Newfoundland in the next election
“I’ve had a vast amount of engagement with stakeholders throughout Atlantic Canada and B.C.
but especially Newfoundland Labrador and in my own riding where (the fishery) is one of the biggest industries.”
Darian Vincent will be taking him on for the NDP
while the Liberals are running Lynette Howell
that was more than enough time to see multiple candidates step forward hoping to fill the seat O’Regan has held through the last three federal elections
John’s South-Mount Pearl riding had several Liberals step forward to seek the candidacy
businessperson Victoria Belbin and longtime provincial politician Tom Osborne all putting their name forward
Osborne — who retired from provincial politics in July 2024 to spend time with family —was selected at the nomination meeting to run for the party
Osborne said he hopes to work with other leaders across the country to find solutions to the new challenges facing Canadians
aiming to strengthen national unity and trade policies
Born in Lewisporte and currently living in Paradise with his partner and two children
Corey Curtis is vying for the seat in Cape Spear on behalf of the Conservatives
Boasting over 20 years of experience in the marine and offshore energy sectors
Curtis is running with hopes of building a strong economy with good jobs and homegrown opportunities
a retired public servant and advocate for accessibility and inclusion in provincial infrastructure
ran in the riding in the last federal election and has remained active in the party provincially
A new name in their federal voting district won’t be the only change residents in parts of central Newfoundland see in the federal election — they’ll also have a new representative on Parliament Hill once their votes have been cast and counted
announced in December he would not be seeking another team in office
Rogers spent seven years as the MP for the area and was heavily involved with municipal politics prior to his jump to the national scene
Current options for taking his place are Liberal candidate Anthony Germain or Conservative candidate Jonathan Rowe
Germain is a former journalist with the CBC in St
having recently retired to pursue a career in education
He has maintained a home in Salvage for the last decade
is originally from Clarenville and is an engineer by trade
who had previously held the seat since 2011
Prior to being elected to the House of Commons
Jones served as Liberal MHA for Cartwright-L’Anse au Clair for 17 years
The only confirmed candidate so far is for the Conservatives
who currently serves as Happy Valley-Goose Bay’s deputy mayor
The Liberal Party has not yet concluded its nomination process
but airline executive Philip Earle has put his name forward for the nomination
No candidate has been announced for the NDP
With Ken McDonald not running in this election
there will be a new MP representing the region for the first time since 2015
was acclaimed March 19 as the Liberal candidate in the riding
Connors is a Conception Bay South town councillor and former executive director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture
practical solutions for the issues that matter most,” Connors said in a media release

The Advanced Auto Repair Center on Foxtrap Access Road in Conception Bay South was completely destroyed by fire Thursday
and when the Conception Bay South Fire Department arrived on scene
there was already heavy smoke coming from the building
Firefighters had to cut openings in the steel garage doors to access the blaze but the fire was already consuming the building and its highly flammable contents when they started pouring water inside
Neighbours reported hearing explosions inside as the flames erupted through the roof
Residents of a home directly next to the garage quickly evacuated
Smoke from the fire could be seen across C.B.S
and was also drifting across Peacekeepers Way during the morning rush hour and police closed the Foxtrap Access Road in the area as water supply lines were laid across the thoroughfare
There were no reports of injuries and no cause has yet been determined
