A police officer saw the vehicle pull into a Euphemia Street parking lot

Traquair pleaded guilty last week to possessing a stolen vehicle and possessing break-in tools linked to the arena incident and being unlawfully in a dwelling house in Corunna

the volunteer-run meal project’s new home at Wellings of Corunna is a match made in heaven
We apologize, but this video has failed to load.Try refreshing your browser, ortap here to see other videos from our team.Play VideoArticle contentThe project needed to leave its previous location in a former Plank Road restaurant on Dec
the same day Wellings wanted a new caterer in place
The experienced chef and volunteers began making and delivering meals to seniors and surgery patients recovering at home as the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020
working from the kitchen of a city church and other temporary locations before leasing the vacant restaurant in early 2022
But after their landlord said in the fall the restaurant building was to be torn down
Allen scrambled to find a new kitchen to prepare the 1,000 meals he and about 30 volunteers cook
Sarnia Blessings also takes catering jobs and sells meals to the public to help cover its costs
“We had a ton of catering booked for December
and we didn’t want to shut down,” Allen said
an adult independent living apartment community
said it stopped including meals to help reduce membership fees and wanted to lease its kitchen beginning Dec
“My cousin is a member here,” and connected Wellings and Sarnia Blessings
and it became just a perfect match,” Yurchuk said
Apartments at Wellings have their own kitchens
but Sarnia Blessings offers residents pay-as-you-go buffet dinners several times a week
“That money assists Kevin in the work they do in the community by providing meals
and our members get beautiful buffet meals
currently three times a week,” Yurchuk said
“It was just a perfect attachment of two organizations
Sarnia Blessings can use Wellings’ large dining area for meals and public events
“It gives us an opportunity to generate some revenue
which we need because we’re not government funded,” Allen said
“We just run on donations and food sales.”
There are plans to open Friday dinner buffets to the public in February and several special events are planned
Having to move during a busy time of year was the “biggest challenge we’ve had to face” but project volunteers came through
“We’re inching every day to being a little more organized.”
Allen said Sarnia Blessings delivered 1,200 meals a week at the height of the pandemic
‘I’m not sure if God wants us to keep this thing going or not.’ ”
But Allen said they found there was still a need among seniors still living at home
including many awaiting places in long-term care
as well as those recovering after medical care
“We don’t refuse anybody,” Allen said of Sarnia Blessing’s tiered prices for its frozen meal deliveries
“If someone can pay full price for our meals
they do that,” but reduced rates are available for those who need it
Others in need are asked only for a donation
“A lot of them are in that category where they can’t afford it.”
Sarnia Blessings soon will be selling its meals from freezers at DeGroot’s Nurseries in Sarnia and Zekveld’s Garden Market in Reece’s Corners
The project always needs volunteers and donations
Allen spent 20 years cooking for children’s camps before that part of his kitchen career was derailed by the pandemic
“God laid it on our hearts to do it,” he said of Sarnia Blessings

The Beer Store's (TBS) Corunna location will be closing its doors for good on April 27
The move comes as beer is now more readily available at many convenience and big box stores across Ontario
President of Retail Ozzie Ahmed confirmed the decision in an email to Sarnia News Today
“Like any retailer in today’s evolving marketplace for beverage alcohol
we are continually evaluating our business operations to ensure we’re meeting the needs of our customers and adapting to change," said Ahmed
"The Beer Store is closely watching our retail stores and making decisions on what makes the most sense for how we operate as a business
Any decision we make considers our commitment to serving our customers."
It's unknown how many jobs will be impacted
Customers are being reminded that they can return their empties at any TBS location, and that information can be found on their website
The province also has a map to find return locations that can be found here
As per the new agreement announced last summer
grocery stores that fall outside of a five kilometre radius of a Beer Store location and sell beer/alcohol will be required to take back empties starting January 1
The Beer Store outlets are also closing in Hearst and Erin
The stores located on Adelaide Street in London
and on King Street in Kitchener will also be shut down
at least 300 Beer Store locations must remain open until the end of 2025
there will be no restrictions on shutdowns

Damage is estimated at about $500,000 in a house fire Thursday morning.
Firefighters from Corunna, Courtright and Beecher stations responded to a structure fire on Fairview Boulevard in Corunna at around 5:45 a.m.
St. Clair Township Fire Chief Richard Boyes said the residents were able to escape the burning home uninjured.
"There was five occupants and some pets, and all occupants got out safely and the dog got out, but we have some cats unaccounted for," he said.
Boyes said the structure was fully involved when firefighters arrived.
"It was a defensive attack from the start," said Boyes. "Firefighters did a good job and we used tower 22 extensively to get to the upper floors and areas of the building. Again, a good job by all the stations to limit the damage. There is some exposure damage to the residence next door to the north from radiant heat, but it didn't spread to the house."
He said the fire started on the exterior of the one-and-half-storey structure.
"The fire did start at the front of the house on the exterior and then advanced to the inside of the house," said Boyes. "It's a wood framed dwelling with vinyl siding so it went up fairly quickly and excess winds didn't help."
The exact cause is undetermined, but it's not believed to be suspicious in nature.

Corunna’s Derek Drouin was in Paris Friday to officially receive his upgraded silver medal from the London 2012 Olympic Games
Drouin had finished in a three-way tie for bronze in the high jump in his Olympic debut in 2012 after clearing 2.29 metres
But the International Olympic Committee announced in 2021 the Corunna native and 2016 Rio gold medalist would have his bronze medal from the London Games upgraded to silver
after Ivan Ukhov of Russia was disqualified and stripped of his gold medal for a doping violation
“While this is certainly not the way any athlete dreams of receiving an Olympic medal
long-awaited reallocations like this display the continuous fight our governing bodies are undertaking to ensure the Olympic arena is a fair and honest environment,” Drouin stated
“I consider this a step in the right direction to ensuring a future where fewer athletes who dope squeeze through the cracks so that moments don’t continue to be stolen from deserving athletes."
becoming Canada’s first Olympic champion in an athletics field event since Duncan McNaughton won the high jump at Los Angeles 1932
On Friday, Drouin was joined on stage by American Erik Kynard — whose silver was upgraded to gold — for the ceremony, held at the Champions Park in the Trocadéro Gardens
“I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to stand on the podium in London
as it is a moment in my career that I will never forget,” he added
I’m pained for the athletes who have been denied the opportunity to listen to their own national anthem while standing atop the podium
“I am excited to celebrate the incredible current athletes as they live out their own Olympic journeys while getting the chance to relive part of my own
I am grateful that the IOC has created this opportunity for athletes affected by doping in sport.”

Cake added his client was essentially being a lookout for Dew and was aiding or abetting him while he did the breaking and entering
Cake said his client got a ride with the wrong person that night and tried to help him after the destination changed instead of walking away
“This was an evening of bad judgment that has caused a lot of stress
noting Dew entered several homes while Churchill kept watch
“(Churchill) could easily have decided to walk away,” she said
She also argued the conditional discharge Cake asked for was contrary to the public interest
frankly – would be very familiar with exactly how disruptive it might be to lose one’s tools and to have one’s worksite disrupted.”
But the judge gave him the chance to make up for it by including community service in his probation order

if you want to know the truth of the matter,” said Jeff Agar
adding he wants provincial government officials to conduct an investigation
“It’s just that nothing got reported,” he said
A fuel tank on a CSX rail locomotive was ruptured on Aug
releasing about 12,000 litres of diesel fuel onto the Arlanxeo site in Sarnia
and an “unknown quantity” made it through storm drains into the nearby St
CSX spokesperson Austin Staton said in an email
Company officials immediately worked to control the release from flowing downstream and contacted local and provincial authorities and Ontario’s Environment Ministry
noting “CSX and its contractors are currently working around the clock … to safely recover the product.”
Clair Township about diesel spilling into the river
a sheen was spotted on the water in Corunna
The township’s fire department notified people in a Facebook post just before 8 p.m
“Because that’s what you do all the days in the summer when you live here,” Shelley said
adding she’s frustrated people weren’t informed about the spill sooner
A small number of properties using well water near Hill and Lyndoch streets also were notified directly not to use their water
public health officials said Wednesday via email
noting the advisory not to swim in the river and not to use well water remains in effect
“Lambton public health is working with the (Ministry of Environment
Conservation and Parks) to monitor the situation,” spokesperson Darren Rogers said in an email
Most properties in the township get their water from Lake Huron and weren’t affected
noting he’s a big supporter of local petrochemical industries
“It’s just they have to do things right,” he said
An alert from Arlanxeo was sent on Saturday around 3 p.m
about a “minor leak at a tenant site” on the property
followed by an “all clear” message just before 3:20 p.m
somebody dropped the ball there,” Agar said
adding he understands spills will happen with petrochemical industries nearby
noting things could have been a lot worse if something more dangerous entered the water
Sarnia Fire Chief Jeff Weber said CSX officials notified “spills action through the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre as they are responsible to do.”
The company is not a BASES member and therefore isn’t responsible for reporting through the mutual aid code system
replying to emailed questions initially sent to Sarnia emergency coordinator and deputy fire chief Dale Gartshore
CSX “did meet their legislated requirement to report the spill to the province and did take responsibility to clean up the spill,” Weber emailed
Asked what should be done to improve reporting timeliness
Weber said “reporting and notifications are constantly being updated and reviewed by the parties involved as well as the City of Sarnia.”
“we continuously make minor adjustments to ensure the best protection and notification to our community
and best possible protection for the environment”
said he saw Environment Ministry officials checking inlets on the west side of the island recently
“There was no residue anywhere that they saw on that side.”
Conservation and Parks staff have visited the site several times
and cleanup is expected to be finished in the next day or so
ministry spokesperson Gary Wheeler said in an email
“Ministry staff are satisfied with the progress made to date,” he said
The amount of diesel that may have reached the river is still being assessed
but there was no threat to the public and “only a slight sheen was observed on the St
noting actions were taken to contain and remove the sheen
No odours or sheen have been identified at any of the various sites along the St
Clair River where the ministry has taken samples
The provincial spills action centre provided notification to the City of Sarnia
First Nation communities and the State of Michigan
“The ministry continues to assess the situation and will address any non-compliances identified with the appropriate regulatory tools.”

Concerns are being raised about a lack of emergency communication after reports of large amounts of diesel fuel leaking into the St
prompting water-use advisories and notices to stay out of the water
“It puzzles me how this was spilled into the river and got all the way to Suncor bend and Corunna with no notification given that it was in the river,” St
Clair Township Mayor Jeff Agar told The Journal Sunday
“There was a derailment and about 12,000 L of diesel fuel got in the river.”
CSX has confirmed to The Journal that around 1:37 p.m
a machine rerailing a CSX locomotive at Arlanxeo in Sarnia
“causing the release of an unknown quantity of diesel fuel onto the property and into the nearby St
“CSX immediately activated its emergency response procedures and deployed containment boom to control downstream migration of the release,” the company stated
adding that they’re “currently working in close coordination with responding officials to safely recover the product."
A CAER Code 8 — which notifies of an ‘internal abnormal occurrence’ — was issued for Arlanxeo through the Aamjiwnaang Notification System around 2 p.m.
and an all-clear was issued about an hour later
In a separate message through Sarnia Lambton Alerts
Arlanxeo noted a 'minor leak at a tenant site on the west site of the ARL property,' and issued an all-clear shortly after
"At approximately 1:30 pm on Saturday August 3
ARLANXEO emergency response became aware of the spill and attended the scene to assist with the spill recovery and cleanup," Arlanxeo's Sarah Macklin stated in an email
adding that the Ministry of the Environment Conservation and Parks attended the scene along with the City of Sarnia Emergency Services
"We are committed to the protection of the local environment and will continue to assist our tenants in the clean-up and mitigation of this incident."
There was no CAER Code 10 issued – which would have notified residents of a spill to the St
Clair River – Sarnia's Mayor Mike Bradley confirmed
Deputy Fire Chief and Sarnia Emergency Coordinator
is "investigating the communication issues."
A Code 10 should be called "by any response team following a verified volume of spill to the St
Clair River that requires down-river notification," according to the Bluewater Association for Safety
The Journal has reached out to Gartshore for comment
Concerns have been raised over the years about the way in which the community is notified when mishaps occur in the Chemical Valley
Clair Township Fire Department said in a social media post that it was investigating a sheen on the water near Corunna
along with the Canadian Coast Guard.
"I myself am really upset that this was not reported as a spill when it happened," Agar stated in a social media post
"Our emergency personnel was not informed until it was discovered as a sheen in the river."
Lambton Public Health later issued a news release
advising users of private drinking water systems not to use their tap water
“as the presence of diesel fuel is suspected to have contaminated private drinking water systems near Hill and Lyndoch Street in Corunna.”
“All other Township residents get their supply of water from the LAWSS in Point Edward,” he stated
“All local water treatment systems have been notified and are taking precautions to prevent contamination,” Lambton Public Health stated
adding that swimming precautions have also been issued for the St
Clair River near Lyndoch and Hill Streets in response to the incident
“Lambton Public Health is advising the public to avoid swimming in the area until further notice.”
Officials at Aamjiwnaang First Nation are also telling residents to stay out of the water for the next few days
“All community members are asked not to be swimming in the river for the next 2-3 days
which includes using all docks,” Aamjiwnaang First Nation’s Emergency Planning posted in a notice on social media
“There was/is a sheen of product in the river from a train derailment in the area.”

The Beer Store is officially gearing up to close an additional five locations across Ontario next month
continuing the trend of reducing its footprint in the province
On April 27, several stores in southwest and northern Ontario, including locations in Kitchener, London, Corunna, Erin, and Hearts will shut their doors, bringing the total number of Beer Store closures to 28 since June of last year
The following locations are set to close next month:
Just last week, the Beer Store shut down eight of its stores in North York, Scarborough, Newmarket, Ottawa, Kingston, East York and Etobicoke. John Nock, President of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 12R24, which represents Beer Store workers across the province, previously confirmed that 23 of the chain's locations had closed or were set to close by Feb
"This is definitely a direct cause of the beer market being opened up," Nock said earlier this year
adding that the closures are "all due to Ford allowing alcohol to be sold in convenience and most grocery stores."
could increase if no agreements are made to stabilize The Beer store in the face of increased competition from grocery stores
"According to the early implementation agreement
The Beer Store must keep 300 stores open until the end of 2025," Nock said. "After that there is no limit on closures."
When previously asked about the influx of closures
Beer Store Vice President of Retail Ozzie Ahmed told blogTO that
"like any retailer in today’s evolving marketplace for beverage alcohol
[The Beer Store is] continually evaluating our business operations to ensure we’re meeting the needs of our customers and adapting to change."
He added that "The Beer Store is closely watching" their retail stores and "making decisions on what makes the most sense" for how the retailer "operates as a business."
Three Toronto Beer Store locations have already closed
as well as those in areas like Barry's Bay
In response to growing competition in the province's alcohol landscape, The Beer Store has worked with the Ontario government to introduce several strategies aimed at boosting revenue, including allowing, in theory, the sale of lottery tickets and non-beer items

An increased police presence is expected at a Corunna elementary school where some parents say they won’t be sending their kids
following a ‘potential threat’ reported to police
In an email sent to parents Tuesday afternoon
the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) says ‘increased safety measures’ will be in place at Sir John Moore Public School — including police presence — following a ‘potential threat against the school’
we are sharing a discovery made at the school,” read the email
signed by principal Erin Gower and vice principal Angela Cote.
“Concerns were raised regarding a potential threat against the school. An investigation by the Lambton OPP took place immediately and has been completed.
they do not believe there is an imminent threat to public safety.”
They added that the LKDSB’s System Coordinator of Safe Schools will also be on site
a growing number of parents say they plan to keep their kids home
many pointing to a lack of information communicated from the school
“We recognize that learning about this potential threat may cause some uncertainty and stress for our students and their families,” the notice added
“We are encouraging students to reach out to a trusted staff member to share any thoughts and concerns they may have.
“Please also know that members from the LKDSB's Psychology department are available to offer counselling supports

Corunna senior Sierra Smith all smiles after earning first at the Charlotte Quad tennis tournament.Corunna Tennis
.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Jonathan Szczepaniak | jszczepaniak@mlive.comFLINT - The form of competition Corunna senior Sierra Smith grew up with didn’t involve a quiet gallery of fans and a pristine court with nicely dressed opponents
Living on 30 acres of land and embracing the true farm lifestyle
Smith spent 13 years showing her horse in competitions and several years competing her pigs and chickens at the local county fair
“I love feeding them and having them grow until they’re a certain weight for the fair
and then I show them at the fair,” Smith said
Smith is also a member of Corunna FFA Chapter where she recently competed in poultry evaluation at the FFA Ag Skills Contest
Then there’s the four-year varsity tennis player side of Smith
who is coming off a first-team all-Flint Metro League selection last season and currently holds a 6-3 record in Corunna’s singles flight 2
Smith doesn’t change herself to fit the mold of either one
she said her livestock lifestyle has only benefited her high school tennis career
“I think being outside with animals and working with them helps with the tennis aspect too because they get you physically fit being out in the heat,” Smith said
“It’s definitely a change from being all dirty with the pigs to playing tennis and everyone is all nicely dressed.”
Holding an 11-7 record last season and earning her all-league honor
Smith was awarded a spot on our Flint-area Senior Spring Sports Star poll
highlighting the best athletes of the 2025 class in spring sports
Smith was crowned the Flint-area Senior Spring Sports Star
Smith held 43 percent of the vote while Clio softball’s Payton Malin (5,712 votes) and Grand Blanc golf’s Boston Koebke (3,669) finished second and third
Our Flint-area Junior Spring Sports Star poll released on Monday and can be found here
Smith must’ve heard the news early because she went out and played like a star on April 26 at the Charlotte Quad tennis tournament
It was Smith’s first tournament win in her high school career
and she had to defeat a talented senior in Durand’s Londyn Laviolette to get the job done
but I just played it point by point,” Smith said
Her point-by-point mindset is exactly what Corunna tennis head coach Bill Lawson said makes Smith a successful tennis player
Lawson said mental toughness has never been something she has lacked
“There’s this thing in tennis where people at the top levels talk about playing point-by-point
Smith had never picked up a tennis racket and only joined the varsity team because her older sister Naia Smith
decided to give tennis a shot for her last year of high school
“My sister was going to go tryout with one of her friends
I don’t have anything going on,’” Smith said
Smith took her bumps and bruises early on the doubles’ scene alongside her friend Kenadie Croskey
who was a freshman as well when Smith joined the team
The duo spent two years together as doubles partners before Smith moved to singles 3 as a junior
“She instinctively understood that the foundation is to not miss and not make mistakes
but what she has done is kept that as her base but also developed and grown in making her opponents make the mistake,” Lawson said
“She’s moving the ball around and her opponent around
and she’s finding ways to create situations where her opponents make a mistake.”
Corunna is the only Division 4 girls tennis team in the Flint Metro League
so it knows going into each matchup that it’s the underdog
Lawson said Smith and the rest of his squad do just fine carrying that title
While the Cavaliers continue to fight in the Flint Metro League
Smith will look to qualify for states for the first time in her career
Smith said all she’s focused on is getting better every day and spending time with her teammates for one last year
Everything else after that is just a bonus
“I really hope I do good at regionals and stuff like that
but as long as I play good and work on my game that’s a win for me,” Smith said
