Supporters of Parc-Natures des Sources are hoping the area referred to as Montreal’s second lung
Montreal and Dorval have pledged support for the area’s conservation
as well as the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake
With just days to go before the federal election
and the Green Party have all declared their support for the park
The Green Coalition is hoping – and has asked – for similar support from both the Liberals and the Conservatives
Transport Canada owns more than two thirds of the land
which plans to build a decarbonization plant on the site
The park is home to many endangered species
Supporters are hoping conservation efforts
would make it a draw to the nature-loving public
The Conservative Party has so far not made its position on the Parc-Nature des Sources public
The Green Coalition says the Liberal Party’s position on the specific area falls short

Festival sur le Canal not on for this year
In a release on the festival’s website organizers indicate that the festival “must unfortunately pause its operations” due to an increase in production costs and lack of funding
Montreal music lovers have looked forward to the festival since it began in 2008
with its stage set up next to the Lachine Canal at St
This year’s festival was scheduled for the weekend of June 13th
“We are not comfortable continuing an event that
in order to cover production and safety costs
would need to reduce the fees paid to artists,” the release reads
“We do not yet know what the future holds,” it adds
“but rest assured that we will continue working and seeking a solution to present an 18th edition of the Festival sur le Canal.”
The city is inviting residents to take part in a public consultation aimed at developing its first cultural policy
and aspirations of the population and cultural stakeholders to design a policy rooted in local reality and representative of the community

It is a structuring tool that mobilizes the entire community around a common project
the city will be able to join the Cultural Development Agreement Program of the Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications
and benefit from financial support to implement concrete cultural actions in its community

The presence of beavers along the shores of Lac Saint-Louis is a positive sign of the health of the ecosystems
and help maintain the quality of the city’s natural habitats
But the city is suggesting to residents that if they do see a beaver
To protect trees from beavers it is recommended to wrap trunks with metal mesh
This mesh should be installed in a way that does not hinder the tree’s growth and adjusted regularly
In Quebec it is illegal to move or disturb beavers and other wildlife without specific authorization
in accordance with the Wildlife Conservation and Enhancement Act
This legal measure aims to protect biodiversity and preserve natural habitats
Violating this law can result in serious consequences
We remind residents of the importance of respecting these rules
Beavers are an integral part of the Lac Saint-Louis ecosystem and greatly contribute to the natural environment in Pointe-Claire
Learning to coexist with them helps maintain ecological balance and enrich the biodiversity of the region

MontrealNewsMultiple shots fired at a home in Montreal’s West IslandBy Rachel LauPublished: March 25, 2025 at 6:28AM EDT
A Dollard-des-Ormeaux residence on Papillon St
became the target of a drive-by shooting last week
marking another concerning incident of gun violence in the West Island community
Montreal police (SPVM) responded to multiple 911 calls at approximately 1:20 a.m
last Wednesday reporting gunfire in the area
officers discovered several bullet impacts on the garage door of the residence
According to SPVM spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils
“multiple projectile impact points were located on the garage door of the residence.” She noted that according to preliminary information
the shots were fired from a moving vehicle that fled the scene before police arrival
The property was previously targeted on February 1
when a vehicle was set ablaze outside the residence
No injuries were reported in Tuesday’s shooting incident
This incident occurs as DDO has seen other recent acts of violence
in an area that has experienced multiple suspicious vehicle fires
A security perimeter was established while the SPVM’s criminal investigations division
conducted their investigation of the scene in order to better understand the circumstances surrounding the event and collect evidence

A public consultation meeting in DDO (November
Dollard-des-Ormeaux’s comprehensive urban planning overhaul is reaching its conclusion
following an unprecedented public engagement process that has involved more than 1,300 residents since 2020
The final phase of consultations on the city’s revised Urban Planning Program and Zoning By-law wrapped up February 18
The extensive consultation process included a landmark meeting at the DDO Civic Centre in 2024 that drew hundreds of concerned citizens
demonstrating the community’s deep investment in the city’s future
which gathered additional written and in-person submissions from over 60 participants
marks the end of a public engagement effort that has far exceeded standard requirements for municipal consultation
which has evolved through multiple rounds of community feedback
addresses several key priorities identified by residents
it preserves 95% of the current zoning while establishing new guidelines for controlled development along major boulevards
This approach reflects a deliberate balance between maintaining the city’s character and planning for future needs
A central element of the plan focuses on the Marché de l’Ouest site
which will maintain its current form under the new regulations
Any future changes to this significant community landmark will require direct resident involvement in the approval process
ensuring community oversight of potential developments
The plan has seen substantial modifications since its earlier versions
particularly following community input in April 2024
the city has reduced allowable densities and heights for potential development sites
These adjustments promote mixed-use developments that maintain human-scale planning principles while meeting the community’s evolving needs
The revised regulations pay particular attention to development along main boulevards
establishing clear guidelines for reasonable redevelopment that aligns with community expectations
These modifications reflect extensive feedback gathered through various participatory activities since the revision process began
which has been ongoing for over five years
demonstrates our commitment to our community,” Mayor Alex Bottausci told The Suburban
“Thanks to the active participation of our residents and their helpful feedback
we have adapted our regulations to meet their expectations
I’m proud of how far we have come to achieve a shared vision for our future.”
The process now moves into its final stages
Following last-minute adjustments to the Urban Planning Program and Zoning By-law
the municipal council will consider the by-laws for definitive adoption at an upcoming council meeting
This step will be followed by conformity reviews from both the Land Use and Development Plan and the Quebec Municipal Commission (CMQ)
Qualified voters in Dollard-des-Ormeaux will receive a public notice during this phase
maintaining transparency through the final steps of the approval process
The regulations will officially come into force once all approval procedures are completed

DDO Councillor Tanya Toledano will be the federal Conservative candidate in the riding of Pierrefonds-Dollard in the next federal election in 2025
she holds Bachelors degrees in business and law
Toledano has been a successful small business owner for some 20 years
she has served on a variety of Boards of Directors for various community organizations
She has volunteered in a women’s shelter; delivered meals to those in need; taught online to seniors; and used her media platforms to generate awareness about community issues and important causes
The Suburban had an opportunity to sit down with her and get her views and ideas
The Suburban: Why did you decide to run to be a candidate for the Conservative Party
Tanya Toledano: The short answer is because I felt “called to service.”
It does not feel like we are living in the same country that I grew up in
people are being turned away from food banks and citizens are living in tent encampments in major cities across the country
Calls for violence and hate speech are being spewed on our streets without consequence and the next generation is seriously preoccupied with whether they will ever be able to afford homes of their own in our country
People are craving a return to common sense
I believe they want a government that ensures that hard work pays off
that freedom is preserved and inspires hope for the next generation
I am a firm believer in the idea that ‘if you don’t speak up now
don’t complain later.’ It is time to speak up and to stand up
This is me standing up to represent the community that I grew up in
where my husband and I chose to raise our family and where I currently represent the residents of Dollard-des-Ormeaux in the capacity of City Councillor
TS: What experiences have you had that would make you a good MP
TT: Having been involved in community life and with charitable organizations over the years has provided me with some insight into various needs within the community as well as an understanding of what it means to advocate for community members
In my role as City Councillor in Dollard-des-Ormeaux
I am entrusted to advocate for our residents to ensure they have what they need
This can sometimes be specific to the individual
maintenance and improvement of facilities and ensuring that all our residents continue to enjoy the lifestyle that made them choose to call Dollard home
It goes without saying that all of this must be done in a fiscally responsible manner
These experiences have all contributed to my ability to listen to community members to understand their concerns and then to translate that into advocacy and action
all while respecting the reality of a budget and limited resources
TS: What challenges are the residents of Pierrefonds-Dollard facing
TT: I believe that the residents of Pierrefonds-Dollard are facing the same challenges as the rest of Canadians
they are facing challenges at the grocery store which are exacerbated by their increased mortgage payments or unprecedented rent rates
They are concerned about what the future holds for the next generation and are supporting them at home for longer than ever before
many conversations with them and their peers — some from the riding and some not
Their conversations constantly revolve around the lack of affordable housing in Canada and how they will ever be able to afford homes of their own in our country
This is me speaking up and standing up alongside Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre
you don’t spend it and that hard work should come with the rewards of being able to afford a home in which to raise one’s family in a safe neighbourhood
with good healthy food on the table and without having to triple-guess every
A Montreal family caught in the crossfire of an intense shooting between a suspect and police in Dollard-des-Ormeaux on Montreal’s West Island on Sunday night are speaking out
Abdel Rahman Abdallah was outside with his father Houssam
helping his parents unpack after they came home from a camping trip
Montreal police received a 911 call at around 8 p.m
about an argument that broke out at a nearby residence — with potential gunshots heard on the corner of Salaberry and Davignon
The 26-year-old suspect fled the scene and then allegedly tried to steal two cars and pointed a gun at Abdallah and his 54-year-old father
“We saw the suspect running towards us with a gun
We didn’t have a chance to answer him
saw the cops coming towards him and started shooting at them,” said Abdallah in an interview at his home on Wednesday
Abdallah says the when the suspect fired the first shot
he ran towards the house and said he felt like something hit him
“I got shot two centimeters away from my spine in the back and the bullet went sideways to my stomach on the side,” he said
He was wearing a white T-shirt with blood on his hands,” she said
She said her son ran to be by his father – he was laying on the ground
adding that her husband didn’t respond
Witnesses say 30 to 40 shots rang out between police and the suspect and Abdallah says it took over an hour before paramedics were able to treat them
His father is in hospital in stable condition
He was shot in the leg five times and is scheduled to have surgery on Thursday
So it’s like we can’t put blame on anyone until the bullets came back from to see which gun shot us,” Abdallah said
Abdallah says police reached out about the incident
but it’s still unclear exactly what happened
We need to be in security,” said El Jundi
She says she wants her son to be able to go back to school and her husband to recover
We’re still under shock,” she added
admitting she’s had a hard time sleeping since the incident

Abdallah says they’ve been living in the neighbourhood for 15 years and have never witnessed violence to this extent
I still feel like I can come here and be safe
it’s going to be time to move out from this house and start a new journey somewhere else.”

MontrealNewsVehicle set ablaze in West Island By Marisela AmadorPublished: February 02, 2025 at 11:55AM EST
A second antisemitic attack took place at the Beth Tikvah Synagogue in Dollard-des-Ormeaux this morning
This time the Molotov shattered a glass panel adjacent to the front doors and sparked a fire in the vestibule leading to the inner door
The previous attack last year flashed at the front doors
Montreal police (SPVM) received a 911 call just before 3 a.m
The area of the synagogue also comprises the Hebrew Foundation School and Federation CJA's West Island office
The police did not allow worshippers in to conduct services
“We demand that Valerie Plante stop the atmosphere of hate both through her own words and by supporting the Police in enforcing the law
That is the only way to end the acts of violent antisemitism that have been the shame of Montreal the past year.”
They found at least one incendiary device." She said witnesses told police they saw at least one suspect in the area prior to the fire
The SPVM says it investigated possible activity at the Federation CJA building nearby
but so far there does not seem to be any signs of damage
and there have been no arrests in the case
Investigators are on site to determine the circumstances leading up to the fire

Some 2000 West Islanders and supporters from across the greater Montreal area gathered at the Mega Centre Des Sources last Friday at noon to rally for Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre.Poilievre gave a passionate and eloquent address on the Common Sense Conservative agenda and introduced Dollard-des-Ormeaux City Councillor Tanya Toledano as the Conservative candidate for the Pierrefonds-Dollard riding in the next federal election
Toledano will challenge incumbent Liberal MP Sameer Zuberi for the seat he has held since 2019
The event attracted numerous political leaders
including Dollard-des-Ormeaux Mayor Alex Bottausci
who offered a strong endorsement of Toledano
“This is an exceptional human being professionally and as a person,” Bottausci told The Suburban
highlighting her strong moral compass and dedication to community service
Leo Housakos started the rally off with a stirring speech and a piercing attack on the Trudeau Liberals. In a surprising turn of events
former Liberal Member of Parliament Eva Nassif was invited to the platform as she is now campaigning for the Federal Conservative Party “Trudeau is ruining Canada
how they can serve my community.” Other municipal officials in attendance included DDO Councillor Errol Johnson and Pointe-Claire Councillors Brent Cowan and Eric Stork
Toledano brings both entrepreneurial experience and public service background to her candidacy
spoke to The Suburban about his experience working with Toledano on the campaign trail
“From her expertise and working with her in the campaign trail — her integrity and ethics and family values and economic sense — places us in very good hands.” He added that
“Poilievre did an amazing job pulling together a great team around him
The leader is important but the team is also very important.”
With the increase in crime in the West Island
it was evident why many cheered loudly following Poilievre’s speech on resolving crime which has skyrocketed across the country
“Gun smugglers will be stopped and locked up
Justin Trudeau wants to protect turkeys from hunters
I want to protect Canadians from criminals
Justin Trudeau allows criminals to be freed
in many cases just minutes after their arrest
There will be no more Netflix sentences where criminals will be able to serve (time) in their living room watching Netflix or playing Grand Theft Auto
and we will pass a new law that says career car thieves and violent and sexual offenders will be permanently ineligible for bail
strongly tied to the rise in crime and hate crimes that are currently not being punished
he stated: “We will continue to be welcoming (to immigrants)
in consideration of the absorption capacity of housing
the work-force and our health care systems and we will screen adequately to stop terrorists and others that are against our Canadian values from coming into our country.”
Poilievre was met by standing ovations upon his arrival and throughout his speech on tax cuts
“It makes no sense that the carpenter that built the house cannot afford to buy one
The event notably drew a strong youth presence
with observers noting significant camaraderie among younger attendees
The substantial turnout from both local residents and province-wide supporters suggests growing Conservative momentum in the region ahead of the anticipated 2025 federal election
Another quiet Saturday night in Dollard-des-Ormeaux was disrupted when a vehicle burst into flames on Papillon Street
marking the latest in what appears to be a concerning pattern of similar incidents raging across the West Island
Montreal police (SPVM) responded to the scene near Hyman Street after receiving an emergency call about a vehicle fire in a residential driveway
SPVM spokesperson Manuel Couture confirmed that at least one suspect was observed fleeing the area as the blaze began
with preliminary findings suggesting the possible use of accelerants
While residents breathed a sigh of relief following the SPVM's arrest of four suspects connected to a string of vehicle fires on Louis Riel Street
Saturday's incident on Papillon Street and a vehicle torching in Kirkland earlier this week paint a troubling picture
The West Island community's sense of security
briefly restored by the recent police breakthrough
has once again been shaken as these brazen acts of arson continue to plague local neighbourhoods
The SPVM's arson squad has taken charge of the investigation
Residents with security cameras in the vicinity are encouraged to contact local authorities if they noticed any suspicious activity
The Suburban will continue to follow this developing story as more details emerge
Many West Islanders love the outdoor market at the Marché de l’Ouest in Dollard des Ormeaux
And its indoor specialty food shops offer a wide variety of offerings that cannot be found anywhere else
city officials last month held a public information session that focused on what the future of this popular commercial site would look like as demand for more residential housing in all corners of the West Island increases pressure to redevelop established areas
“I would rather choose our destiny than to have it imposed on us,” Dollard Mayor Alex Bottausci told The 1510 West
The city has not received any official plans to redevelop the sprawling 128,000-square-foot strip – almost three acres – along De Salaberry Blvd.
but municipal officials outlined the city’s new proposed planning guidelines for the site
If these guidelines are adopted as part of the city’s new urban plan
they would frame future redevelopment projects in this location
It is those planning guidelines that were outlined at the public information session held June 19
the Montreal Metropolitan Community (CMM) that is controlled by the City of Montreal
is working on their master plan,” Bottausci said
adding: “Their master plan calls for certain levels of density and other things that could happen on our territory if we do not come up with our own master plan.”
the zoning for the site would be changed from strictly commercial to a mix of commercial and residential
residential development could be added to the location while specifically requiring that all the indoor commercial outlets as well as the outdoor market be maintained
Keeping as much control as possible over the future development is the city’s aim
And it would allow Dollard’s new master plan to supersede recommendations made by the CMM
especially when it comes to the Marché de l’Ouest
We want to make sure we capture everybody’s sentiments about this plot of land,” Bottausci said
“I think this is a positive thing,” the mayor added
“It’s an opportunity for the community to get engaged and that’s exactly what I want
If we are able to draft a plan before them
our plan trumps their plan and they would move forward with something that we want.” he added
voice our opinions and collectively come together
design a plan and build something that makes sense for everybody
Something that makes sense to us,” Bottausci said
The Marché de l’Ouest is owned by BTB Real Estate Investment Trust
a Montreal-based publicly-traded company that owns and manages properties across Canada
It opened in June 1982 and expanded in 2004
It underwent extensive renovations in 2016
BTB REIT owns a total of 53 commercial and industrial properties in Quebec
which includes a Pharmaprix and a Bank of Montreal; a commercial plaza in St
and industrial buildings in Dorval and Vaudreuil-Dorion

2024: Beth Tikvah Synagogue in Dollard-des-Ormeaux
Montreal Police (SPVM) have arrested a 19-year-old suspect in connection with the December 2024 firebombing of Beth Tikvah Synagogue in Dollard-des-Ormeaux
Mohamed Ilyess Akodad was arrested at his residence in Anjou after a search was executed by the SPVM’s arson squad which led investigators to seize various pieces of evidence
The recent arrest comes following the December 18 attack
when police responded to a 911 call around 3 a.m
reporting a fire at the synagogue on Westpark Street
The firebomb shattered a glass panel adjacent to the front doors and sparked a fire in the vestibule leading to the inner door
A door was also broken during the incident
and investigators discovered an incendiary device dubbed a “Molotov cocktail” at the scene
Witnesses reported seeing a suspect flee the area
two windows were shattered at a nearby Jewish community building across the street
Akodad appeared at the Montreal courthouse on Wednesday to face charges related to arson
“We are grateful to the police for diligently investigating this case,” says B’nai Brith Canada’s Regional Director for Quebec and Atlantic Canada Henry Topas
“Brazen attacks on our places of worship have left deep scars in Montreal’s Jewish community.”
Federation CJA acknowledged that measures taken by their Community Security Network were “instrumental in not only preventing greater damage but also in providing the tools and resources to law enforcement needed to further their investigation.”
emphasized the importance of this development: “We have long called for law enforcement and public safety officials to use every possible tool to identify and hold accountable those responsible for the hate
intimidation and violence we see in our streets.”
The December attack marked the second such incident at Beth Tikvah
following a similar firebombing in November 2023
Both attacks involved incendiary devices targeting the building’s entrance and coincided with vandalism at nearby Jewish community facilities
staff and congregants arrived to find their front doors charred from a Molotov cocktail
while Federation CJA’s West Island offices were also targeted with a second Molotov cocktail discovered at its location
“I am thankful that the police have arrested the individual implicated in the fire bombing of Beth Tikvah
DDO Councillor Tanya Toledano addressed concerns about enforcement of antisemitic crimes
We need to see that the police are not operating with what appears to be their hands tied behind their backs and be able to actually enforce the laws that exist
We’ve seen violence on our streets with very few arrests and certainly none that I know of that have been sticking
Beth Tikvah Rabbi Emeritus Mordecai Zeitz also expressed concerns
“Even when they (police) catch the perpetrators
According to B’nai Brith’s latest Annual Audit of Antisemitic Incidents
Quebec recorded a 215.7 percent increase in antisemitic incidents since 2023
The organization’s Director of Research and Advocacy
Jews remain Canada’s most targeted religious minority
being the victims of almost 60% of hate crimes while making up only some 2% of the population
Despite the arrest, police say the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact 911, their local police station, or anonymously through Info-Crime Montreal at 514-393-1133 or via the online form at infocrimemontreal.ca
A few showers early becoming a steady rain overnight
A second antisemitic attack took place at the Beth Tikvah Synagogue in Dollard-des-Ormeaux last Thursday morning
The area of the synagogue also comprises the Hebrew Foundation School and Federation CJA’s West Island office
They found at least one incendiary device.” She said witnesses told police they saw at least one suspect in the area prior to the fire
The SPVM says it investigated possible activity at the Federation CJA building nearby and did find a shattered window
and there have been no arrests in the case as of press time. The SPVM’s arson and hate crimes units have taken charge of the investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding this latest attack
no arrests have been made in connection with the incident
Law enforcement officials are urging anyone with information about the attack to come forward
who was among the first officials at the scene
“I am outraged at these cowardly acts that are clearly antisemitic
This is not random graffiti on a wall but purely antisemitic acts of hate
When someone breaks a window to a synagogue it crosses a line
All residents have right to live in this country and in peace
These cowards need to be brought to justice with the severest penalties possible. To all the members of the Jewish community feeling threatened by this heinous act
I want to assure you that an investigation is currently underway and that our city is invested in the safety of our community and is working closely with the SPVM and our municipal patrol to ensure your security,” the Mayor stated
Pierrefonds-Dollard MNA Brigitte Garceau said
“I am outraged to learn of the second arson attack targeting the Beth Tikvah Synagogue
and the Federation CJA offices located in my riding
These hateful and antisemitic acts are completely unacceptable and must be condemned
The safety and security of the Jewish community and all residents of Dollard-des-Ormeaux is out utmost priority.”
The Suburban asked DDO Councillor Tanya Toledano what she thinks of the perception that when it comes to antisemitic crimes there is a lack of emforcement
It cannot continue like this.“Beth Tikvah Rabbi Emeritus Mordecai Zeitz added
We have been here for 60 years (at Beth Tikvah) and we will be here for another 60 years.”
and violence in Canada have seen a massive surge
with B’nai Brith’s annual audit showing a 109 percent increase in 2023
This attack bears a striking similarity to another act of local terrorism at the same synagogue that occurred last winter
staff and congregants of Beth Tikvah arrived to find their front doors charred from a Molotov cocktail attack that had occurred in the early morning hours
The Federation CJA’s West Island offices were also targeted in that coordinated attack
with a second Molotov cocktail discovered at its location
The 2023 attack drew immediate and forceful condemnations from a broad spectrum of community leaders
including Father Bertrand Montpetit of St-Lukes Catholic Parish and Pastor Jim Slack of Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church
personally visited the synagogue to show solidarity
B’nai Brith Canada noted that the attack occurred against a backdrop of increasing antisemitic incidents across the country
with Jews remaining Canada’s most targeted religious minority Being the victims of almost 60% of hate crimes while making up only some 2% of the population
In a tranquil neighbourhood of Dollard-des-Ormeaux (DDO)
a series of vehicle fires has sparked concern and prompted an investigation by Montreal police (SPVM)
The latest incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning
when a vehicle parked on Louis-Riel Street was engulfed in flames
This marks the third vehicle fire on the same street in just two days
leading to heightened scrutiny from law enforcement
Residents were awakened by the sounds of the blaze around 3:50 a.m.
with the SPVM summoned to the scene minutes later
Officers discovered a vehicle completely destroyed by fire
and the initial reports stemming from the early stages of the investigation suggests suspicious circumstances
according to SPVM spokesperson Veronique Dubuc
This unsettling pattern began the previous evening
when two other vehicles were allegedly similarly set ablaze on the same street around 8 p.m
the SPVM has ramped up their presence in the area
deploying additional patrols to maintain public safety and gather information
The SPVM’s arson unit has taken charge of the investigation
examining the scene for evidence to determine the cause of these fires
The local DDO community finds itself on edge
As authorities continue their investigation
hoping for a swift resolution to these mysterious and troubling incidents
Kirkland residents living on the same street have recently experienced a similar scare
with multiple arson attacks occurring at three residences on the same street.
have raised various concerns about the rise in crime in different neighbourhoods which have previously been considered generally “safe” in comparison with other sectors in the Greater Montreal Area (GMA).
