Last year, Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood sparked controversy when he defended his ongoing collaboration with Israeli musician Dudu Tassa
The pair had two concerts scheduled in the UK for next month
and both have been canceled amidst the BDS Movement
Greenwood and Tassa performed in Tel Aviv almost a year ago
Sanctions movement to accuse Greenwood of “artwashing genocide” by playing a show in Israel while the country’s military committed genocide against the Palestinian population
In his statement at the time, Greenwood wrote that “silencing Israeli artists for being born Jewish in Israel doesn’t seem like any way to reach an understanding between the two sides of this apparently endless conflict.” He and Tassa have not yet commented on the new cancelations, but the BDS Movement reacted on their Instagram:
Jonny Greenwood and Dudu Tassa’s show at Hackney Church has also been cancelled
Palestinians welcome the cancellation of both of their UK shows
We reiterate our call for all venues to refuse to programme this complicit event that can only artwash genocide
Greenwood and Tassa were slated to play the Bristol Beacon on June 23 and London’s Hackney Church on June 25. The cancelations were confirmed on the event pages

This year’s 12th edition of the Scary Movies festival at Film at Lincoln Center premiered Ari Aster’s extended version of “Midsommar” this past Saturday
There’s clearly some major reshuffling going on when it comes to Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride,” and I’ll get to the other stuff in a minute
it looks like Johnny Greenwood (“There Will Be Blood”) will no longer be composing the score for Gyllenhaal’s semi-musical
but one who is sadly coming off last year’s “Joker: Folie à Deux.”
No reason seems to have been given for Greenwood’s departure, but it’s just the latest development in what’s been a tumultuous last few months for Gyllenhaal’s film. This film can’t catch a break, but don’t tell that to Warner co-CEO Pam Abdy, who recently blamed the bad buzz on sexism
I recently flagged that “The Bride!” wasn’t exactly killing it in test screenings
and Puck confirmed my reporting soon after
while also scratching their heads over how exactly Gyllenhaal
whose directorial résumé includes precisely one movie
managed to convince Warners to bankroll her $100 million gothic musical passion project
is reportedly struggling to strike the right balance
Abdy was apparently tasked to try to whip the movie into shape
and word is she’s having a hard time of it
“The Lost Daughter,” was a critical darling and nabbed her a Venice screenplay award
she was expected to bring “The Bride!” to Venice this fall
but then Warners delayed its October release to a more suspicious March 2026 unveiling
and Jake Gyllenhaal—and it’s loosely riffing on Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

criminal lawyer and playwright after illness in her home city of Melbourne
Australian author Kerry Greenwood, best known for her Phryne Fisher murder mystery novels, has died at the age of 70 after an illness.
She was given “a suitably royal send-off” at a small service in Melbourne’s Yarraville on Sunday, according to her partner, writer David Greagg.
Greenwood, who lived in nearby Seddon, died on 26 March. Greagg, posting on Greenwood’s official facebook page on Monday, said he had refrained from making a public announcement until after the service.
“Kerry was an extremely private person and had no wish to share her pain with anyone,” he wrote. He said her “condition had deteriorated to the point where I could not keep her at home any longer”.
“The end was mercifully quick thereafter.”

Even after her writing career took off in the 1990s, Greenwood continued to work as a locum solicitor. At her funeral service on Sunday, her brother said, “The quest for justice is what drove her.”
While Greenwood’s publisher said her writing had slowed in recent years due to poor health, she was still writing until recently, posting on Facebook on 18 March about the newest Phryne Fisher book, due out later this year.
“Murder in the Cathedral is undergoing transformation from an extensively edited Word file into proper pages. This is a slow process, involving mysterious alchemy, scattering of rose petals, muttered incantations and the like, but it progresses,” she wrote.

Manchester United’s hopes of generating additional income from their clause in Mason Greenwood’s Marseille contract are growing amid claims the forward is pushing for a shock return to the Premier League and with two factors forcing his exit from the Ligue 1 giants
The 23-year-old has been forced to rebuild his life and his professional career overseas, after Manchester United decided it was best to move him despite charges of attempted rape and assault being dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service and the case discontinued in February 2023
the Red Devils decided to sell Greenwood to Marseille last summer for a fee of £26.6m (€31.6m
though the move did present United with a big-money cut of any future deal
To that end, United secured the rights to obtain a further 50% share of any profit Marseille make from their initial Greenwood signing – potentially adding millions to Ruben Amorim’s transfer kitty somewhere down the line
Now reports of a move away from Marseille are starting to gather pace
with Greenwood both unsettled in the south of France and with Marseille’s ultras making their feelings clear on his performances
And now reports in both France and England claim that the Bradford-born attacker is ‘pining for a return to England – putting a string of Prem clubs on red alert’
A source also told The Sun that Greenwood is hoping that the “vitriol he previously faced has died down a bit and people may have moved on” with the “novelty” of living in France wearing off
The source continued: “When Mason first left United he loved Spain
He and Harriet moved to Madrid and rebuilt their lives
“He loved the fact that he could just play football
and his life off the pitch was not the subject of such intense focus
“He was really happy to sign for Marseille and loved living in France
but he is very introverted and misses his extended family and the friends he has from home
“A move back to the North West could suit him as he feels the vitriol he previously faced has died down a bit

Reports in France go on to explain that Marseille’s supporters
a group of hardcore ones are known as Ultras
have made it clear what they think of Greenwood’s efforts in recent weeks
despite the fact his numbers speak for themself and Greenwood has managed 19 goals and five assists from 34 appearances so far
His cause has not been helped by OM boss Roberto de Zerbi
who insists the forward must “sacrifice” more for the team to make himself one of the best
after recently dropping him from his starting line-up
De Zerbi said: “No one can have more respect for him than I do
But that doesn’t change anything: I expect more from him
because what he is currently showing is not enough
“If he wants to achieve his ambition of becoming a champion
While The Sun refuses to name a particular club he could end up at
there are only a handful of Premier League sides who sit within the boundaries of what their stipulation that Greenwood ‘wants to return to the North West’
Aston Villa – an 85-mile commute down the M6
or Wolves (74 miles away) could emerge as options were the player be willing to commute
Or there could be Premier League newcomers
who also sit with the radius of clubs who could potentially bring him in
And while such a move looks highly unlikely to say the least
their chairman Paraag Marathe has vowed to spend whatever it takes and as much as they can within the boundaries of the game to give Leeds a fighting chance of survival in the Premier League
Meanwhile, United midfielder Mason Mount has strongly criticised the team’s performance against Brentford
while head coach Ruben Amorim is in despair over the injury to Matthijs de Ligt
Elsewhere, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed his bafflement at why United decided to sell a top midfielder last summer
However, rumours that Arsenal are in contact to sign a player Amorim has already decided is not part of his Man Utd plans have been quickly cleared up with the player’s preferred next destination now coming to light
And finally, United are reportedly close to launching an official offer to sign a top-notch Brazilian midfielder with Amorim’s plans to pair him up with Manuel Ugarte in the engine room now coming to light

Mason Greenwood has reportedly made a decision on his Marseille future less than a year after joining the Ligue One outfit
Roberto De Zerbi's men are second in the league behind Marseille and look good value to return to the Champions League next season
who has switched international allegiance from England to Jamaica
finding the net 19 times in 33 appearances
But according to a report from The Sun, Greenwood is looking to leave Marseille and is desperate to return to the Premier League
As well as longing to play at the highest level once again
it's said that Greenwood is missing his family and friends back in England and longs to be closer to them
The 23-year-old's last appearance in the Premier League came in January 2022 against West Ham and he was suspended by United after being arrested and subsequently charged with attempted rape
The charges were later dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service with key witnesses withdrawing their involvement in the case and new material emerging
In 2023, United conducted a thorough club investigation which ultimately concluded with the mutually agreed decision that he should continue his playing career elsewhere
Greenwood's stint with Marseille hasn't been all plain-sailing as De Zerbi dropped him last month for not working hard enough
Marseille's fans even got on his case with a banner which told him and teammate Luis Henrique to "get moving"
but Di Zerbi has been impressed by how he has responded
an extraordinary father with whom I worked a lot
with the help also of Mehdi Benatia," De Zerbi said
"It is true that sometimes he gives us the impression that he can score three or four goals per game
and sometimes also that he wastes a little of his potential and his value
by taking care of him and sometimes also by being harder so that he continues his progression
"This is the main objective that I have with all my players
beyond all those that we can have with the club
because if I make my players progress we can achieve the club's objectives faster."
United inserted a 50 per cent sell-on clause in Greenwood's Marseille deal
which means they will be entitled to take half of a future fee

But the Man Utd academy product was dropped for two games in a row in March with Marseille boss Roberto de Zerbi insisting that the striker must “sacrifice” more

“His formative years in hockey were basically here,” explained Hyslop
who taught Wregget at Dwight Ross Junior High School
“The kids who played sports in this area had a close connection to their schools
and a very close connection with their coaches and teammates
Wregget’s father was transferred to 4 Wing Cold Lake in Alberta
Wregget played junior hockey for the Lethbridge Broncos

“He wants to be here to meet former teammates and former people that he knew that were involved in his life,” said Hyslop
who shared the induction news with Wregget
MacMillan grew up in Wilmot and now lives in Kingston
He worked at Paragon Golf and Country Club in the village
including serving as the superintendent for 18 years
MacMillan won provincial titles at every level
he finished second in juvenile and third in junior
“Gerry was dominant in amateur golf in Nova Scotia,” Hyslop said
MacMillan won seven Nova Scotia amateur championships from 1977 to 1998 and was second six times
He was part of the provincial team 19 times between 1972 and 2001
He was named Nova Scotia’s golfer of the year four times and was inducted into the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in 2004

“Gerry has been a great role model and an inspiration for many.”

Hatfield was a coach and well-known softball and baseball umpire
He started umpiring in 1958 and called his last out in 2020 when he worked three games of baseball for the commercial league in Yarmouth
Glavine talked to pitchers who raved about having him behind the plate
“They spoke about Ernie and his consistency
provincials and zones in three provinces and for 10 years was umpire-in-chief for the Annapolis Valley
The under-15 Red Sox grew out of the Dwight Ross school team that was a dominant force in Western Nova Scotia
“We decided to test them against the provincial competition,” said Hyslop
the girls picked strawberries as soon as school got out.”
The team registered with the provincial association in 1977 and defeated the Halifax Jollimore squad 2-0 in the best-of-three provincial final with both games being decided by one run
“That was the closest competition (we) had in 2.5 years,” Hyslop said
The team repeated as provincial champs in 1978 to qualify for the first Eastern Canadian championship in 1979
Greenwood hosted the New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador representatives and won all four of its games in the double round robin to be crowned champs
“I had girls that were extremely talented athletes
They were good in multiple sports,” Hyslop said of the fundamentally sound team
because we didn’t have very many teams to play
we practised hard (and) we got boys in the area to group up and play us in pickup games.”
the girls went 32-0 against their age group and won an under-16 and an under-20 tournament
Its only loss during that time was to a senior women’s team
The Bombers dynasty saw the Greenwood squad win three straight provincial championships from 1976 to 1979 and Maritime titles in 1978 and 1979
“They were playing as high a level of bantam you could play,” explained Hyslop
“They had excellent coaching and they had excellent talent,” Hyslop said
“Kenny (Wregget) played goal for two of the three teams
Mark MacPherson and Ken Peach coached the team
half of the team returned and they won again
advancing to the first Maritime championship

A provincial public safety policy to arbitrarily shut off power in certain areas during emergencies raised concerns with Greenwood City Council during the April 14 meeting
Councillor CJ Rhodes pointed out a letter from FortisBC regarding its public safety power shutoff policy in the information items
the company will be implementing a policy to proactively shut off power in areas deemed high-risk for wildfires during extreme weather.
“It is a tool of last resort utilities across North America are introducing to reduce the potential risk of wildfires,” the letter read
“We also understand the communities we serve rely on electricity
especially extended ones can create significant challenges
impacting both critical infrastructure and vulnerable customers.”
This policy was introduced at the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary’s last board meeting and there was significant pushback on the new policy
so this should be up for discussion at the next City Council meeting.
One of the issues raised at the regional district meeting was while it’s not devastating in communities like Greenwood for the power to go out for a while
it could be detrimental for rural residents who rely on consistent power for their homes
Residents who are not in immediate danger will lose their power with this kind of shutoff policy
putting their homes and operations at risk
“How the lines work is there is a line at the front of the street and if it’s cut off at the beginning because there’s an issue there
everyone down that line will lose their power,” he said
“The rural residents were the most vocal about this because hundreds of people could lose their power
I’m not in favour of this and I think we need to be proactive because it sounds like they are just going to do it because they want to.”
CAO Dean Trumbley recommended Council direct staff to contact the RDKB to get more information
adding he shared Councillor Rhodes’ concerns

The forward, 23, left Manchester United for £26.6million last summer and signed a five-year deal with Marseille in the south of France
He has scored 19 goals in 33 appearances for the Ligue 1 side
But he has faced repeated criticism from manager Roberto De Zerbi and was dropped in March for a perceived lack of work-rate
Greenwood — who had charges of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour dropped in February 2023 — is yearning for a return to the UK with partner Harriet Robson and their two young daughters
He signed for Marseille following a successful spell in Spain with Getafe

The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel tweeted that the first cancellation that the event would have whitewashed the “genocide” of Gaza and the “underlying settler-colonial apartheid regime”
Greenwood wrote last year amid controversy over the pair’s Israel dates: “I’ve been collaborating with Dudu and releasing music with him since 2008 – and working privately long before that
I think an artistic project that combines Arab and Jewish musicians is worthwhile
And one that reminds everyone that the Jewish cultural roots in countries like Iraq and Yemen go back for thousands of years
no art is as ‘important’ as stopping all the death and suffering around us
And silencing Israeli artists for being born Jewish in Israel doesn’t seem like any way to reach an understanding between the two sides of this apparently endless conflict.”

Please join us April 25th for the inaugural Arts & Science Lecture in Classics
Greenwood will be giving a lecture titled "Odysseus at the Bag Check: Greek Myth and Immigration in Contemporary Poetry”
Please register for this event: Registration Link
There is plenty for the postcolonial poet not to like about Homer’s Odysseus
Odysseus has more than a touch of the proto-colonizer about him
but his experiences as a wandering exile have also made him a fellow-traveller for minoritized immigrant poets who fail real and metaphorical bag checks
This lecture will explore the role of Odysseus and other characters from ancient Greek myth as privileged
fast-tracked fellow-travellers in contemporary poetry about immigrant and refugee experiences
The recycling of these characters offers interesting insights into the cultural exchange value of Classics in the wreckage of modernity
The lecture will include discussion of poems by Dionne Brand

said 14 Explosive Disposal Flight was planning the work at the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Range between 9 a.m
“Precautions are taken to ensure this is conducted in a safe and controlled matter,” the announcement said
“The public is advised that the base and surrounding area will be subjected to controlled and repeated high order detonations/explosions causing sound and smoke plumes from the disposals and explosives being used.”
Weather may also be a factor in how far sound may be noticeable
the Radiohead guitarist and revered film composer released a collaborative album
The duo was set to perform in Bristol on June 23rd and Hackney on June 25th
These concerts “would have whitewashed Israel’s genocide against 2.3m Palestinians in Gaza and underlying settler-colonial apartheid regime,” the post states
It goes on to explain: “Jonny Greenwood, guitarist with Radiohead and The Smile
had performed in apartheid Tel Aviv along with Dudu Tassa in May 2024
on a night that genocidal Israeli forces massacred displaced Palestinians in their tents in Rafah
The BDS statement then turns explicitly to Tassa’s involvement with Israel, reporting that Tassa is more complicit than his birthright alone. It states, “Dudu Tassa has repeatedly entertained genocidal Israeli forces in between these massacres of Palestinians in Gaza, willingly acting as a cultural ambassador for apartheid Israel.”
In response, the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic & Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) had called for “‘boycotting, peacefully disrupting, and creatively protesting’ The Smile’s tour, after its failure to distance itself from Jonny Greenwood’s shameful artwashing of genocide.” In this case, artwashing refers to the use of art to mask or legitimise negative actions, particularly those associated with gentrification or social cleansing.
The post finally calls for the boycott of all future The Smile and Radiohead events, “until these groups convincingly distance themselves, at a minimum, from Jonny Greenwood’s crossing of our peaceful picket line during this genocide.”
Neither Greenwood nor Tassa have commented on the cancellations.

Mason Greenwood is said to be feeling homesick
despite a prolific season in Ligue 1 with Marseille
and is eager to return to the Premier League
New owners promise to remain true to the deep Kingston roots of Amey’s Taxi
Amey’s Taxi has been sold to Coventry Connections
Amey’s Taxi published a news release on Jan. 9 stating the ownership of Amey’s Greenwood Taxi Ltd. has been transferred to Coventry Connections. This announcement comes as Mark Greenwood—owner of Amey’s Taxi—retired this past December. Owned by the Greenwood family since 1945, Amey’s Taxi has been a Kingston fixture since its founding in 1922
Likewise, Coventry Connections is a family-owned business with deep roots in the transportation industry, dating back to 1938. Marc André Way, the company’s president and chief executive officer, as well as the president of the Canadian Taxi Association
represents the third generation of his family to lead the business
which now operates a fleet of over 1,500 vehicles across Ontario
In their news release, Coventry Connections stated it would be “business as usual,” and they would honour all legal obligations of Amey’s Taxi, including abiding by Ontario regulations and upholding their standard of safety. Amey’s runs a host of services including airport services
Way said Coventry Connections remains committed to the community and plans to actively support local charitable organizations
He asserted Amey’s Taxi will simply be operating under new ownership
with a principal focus on improving the Amey’s image while continuing the company’s legacy
“We don’t enter into a community and disappear
so our goal is to be heavily involved in the community and to continue whatever what Mark was doing,” Way said
Way implores them to consider Amey’s Taxi as a safer alternative given their unique safety measures and focus on hiring trustable drivers
“Our insurance programs are much stronger [than competitor ridesharing apps] and that is something that [prevents] the risks of getting into a car that is not properly licensed and properly insured,” Way said
For instance, he explained Amey’s will be placing an emphasis on implementing hiring practices and training in their quest to elevate the transportation industry to another level. Way also indicated his business model for Amey’s Taxi will set itself apart from competition with its pricing
“Where we’ll make a big difference and where we’re making a difference across the other cities within which we operate is that our pricing is fixed
Surge pricing—the practice of charging more for a service based on high demand—is a large deterrent for many from services like Uber that use this tactic to garner the most profit possible
Other taxi companies say the desirability of fixed-priced taxis is especially helpful so students can budget their transportation accordingly with pre-set rates
regardless of inclement weather or busy times
Amey’s Taxi’s fixed prices also bode well for drivers under Way’s corporate umbrella
“We as taxi operators have two sets of clients: the one that takes a taxi from ‘A’ to ‘B’ and the driver […] our goal is to do better than [other ride-share services] and make sure our drivers earn more than they would anywhere else,” Way said
Way has big hopes for the future of Amey’s Taxi now that its been taken under the wing of Coventry Connections
“We’re much quicker to be able to diversify depending on the service needed
so anything from deliveries to school transportation […] we’re involved in pretty much every aspect of bringing something […] from A to B
and we do it quickly and we do it efficiently,” Way said
As for his long-term strategy for ensuring profitability in an increasingly competitive market
Way says Coventry Connections is still in the early days of the acquisition and is primarily focused on employee and customer experience
“We’re still in the studying mode […] we’re trying to understand the driver’s side of the business as much as the users,” Way said
we’re] looking for what’s missing […] there’s that learning curve that we’re going through.”

Check Out: BREAKING: Liverpool Confirm Big Trent Decision
Greenwood left Manchester United in 2024 for £26.6million (R647 million) and signed a five-year deal with French side Olympique Marseille
He was exiled from the Red Devils in 2022 after accusations of rape and sexual assault surfaced against him
with the club deciding to cut ties with him
The former England international joined Spanish side Getafe CF on loan in 2023/24 before making his switch to France
where he has netted 19 goals in 33 games in all competitions
Greenwood is reportedly looking for a return to England
The Sun report that a source has claimed that Greenwood
who has two young children with his partner Harriet Robson
wants to come back to England after spells in Spain and France
"When Mason first left United he loved Spain," the source said
"He and Harriet moved to Madrid and rebuilt their lives."
"He loved the fact he could just play football and his life off the pitch was not the subject of such intense focus," the source continued
"He was really happy to sign for Marseille and loved living in France
But he’s been abroad for nearly two years and the novelty has worn off," the source added
Greenwood is reportedly missing his extended family and friends from the UK and a move back to England will suit him again
“Mason’s family visit but he is very introverted and misses his extended family and the friends he has from home," the source said

"A move back to the North West could suit him as he feels the vitriol he previously faced has died down a bit and people may have moved on.”
The City of Greenwood Council and the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary have endorsed the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department's contingency Fire Service Business Plan
which was the main topic of discussion for the Feb
The City of Greenwood's 2025 budget includes the fire services plan receiving an increased tax requisition for fire services at 1.3086 per $1,000 of assessed value
CAO Dean Trumbley said during the meeting they will see the budget for the fire department at $233,000 for 2025
bringing it closer to what other small cities like Greenwood allocate for their fire services
adding Greenwood’s has been chronically underfunded for years and needs funding and a plan to improve it.
The 2024 amount for the fire department was $107,950
Councillor Gerry Shaw asked for some discussion as he had a few concerns over how some aspects were written
including the budgetary portions and wanted the tax requisition as a separate motion and discussion
as well as a separate meeting to talk about proposed reports.
He explained that while they do talk about budgets
they don’t touch on the reserves in the budget
which the city will need to know as it will be going towards purchasing another fire truck.
Councillor CJ Rhodes was in agreement with Shaw’s requests
he added the report as it’s a good look at why the city is “suffering” in terms of fire protection and how it can take what it has now and improve services
have a real concern on the tax impact on our community,” he said
“One of the things I have trouble getting out of these reports is how these suggestions are going to affect the current year of taxation.”
Greenwood is going through budgetary processes right now
and the city has to be careful about impacts
It was ultimately decided that the fire department tax requisition would be kept at 1.30
but there would be discussions later about looking at lowering the city’s overall tax rate from 5.5 to five and drawing on reserves and other funding options to lessen the burden on taxpayers and in turn
lower the amount of tax residents will pay to get the fire department to its $233,000 budget
Council also approved that mayor and council direct staff to incorporate the proposed 2025 fire service business plan budget into the 2025 preliminary budget.
Trumbley stressed these motions were just about the budget
key initiatives in the plan will be discussed at later dates.
The plan and a comparative analysis of tax requisitions for fire service in the Boundary Area are available in the city council meeting package
The city’s budget and overall mill rate will be discussed at the March 10 Committee of the Whole meeting
stating the plan outlines a budgetary and comparative need for enhancing the capabilities
and overall effectiveness of the fire department in serving the city and rural Greenwood area.
“By aligning with the city's Corporate Strategic Plan
which prioritizes fire protection as a top objective
the council and regional district recognize the vital role that a well-equipped and properly trained fire department plays in safeguarding lives and property
The financial support as a result of this endorsement will allow the fire department to go ahead with essential upgrades
which include advanced training programs for firefighters
modernization of equipment and facilities and increasing recruitment and retention of dedicated volunteers.
The results of this will mean improved response times and enhanced firefighting capabilities that will allow the city to tackle fire emergencies.
“By addressing the previous shortfalls in funding that hindered the department's ability to maintain optimal service levels
the City of Greenwood and the RDKB are sending a clear message that the safety and well-being of their citizens are of paramount importance,” the statement read
Asset management work garnering attention around the region
Greenwood will be looking further into having the Regional District of Kootenay-Boundary (RDKB) on its asset management team
A memo was presented to the council recommending finding out more information on how a proposed regional asset management shared service model could be used
City CAO Dean Trumbley spoke to Council on it
stating the RDKB is behind Greenwood in regard to asset management
but recommended they have a representative from the regional governance on the city’s team
“We do have in our policy the opportunity to develop an asset management team
but it might benefit us to have an RDKB member as a part of that team to help bring regional perspective and to show cooperation,” he said.
He added it’s also an opportunity to show best practices because as the city and region work on their asset management plans
city administration could find some more opportunities
This will be more to explore the idea further
but no solid commitment to have a shared plan.
who has been involved in the talks with the RDKB
added he would also like to see a panel with representatives from each community on this board
This would be informative for all the community CAOs
to stay on top of asset management and learn from each other

Those supporting the cultural boycott of Israel say the shows would have "artwashed genocide"
Jonny Greenwood has seen two UK shows with Israeli musician Dudu Tassa cancelled after protests from the BDS movement
The pair were due to play two shows in the UK next month
at Bristol’s Beacon on June 23 and London’s Hackney Church on June 25
it has been confirmed in recent days that both shows have now been cancelled
Responding to the first gig being called off
PACBI wrote on X: “Palestinians welcome the cancellation of Jonny Greenwood and Dudu Tassa’s concert
UK on the 23rd June and would have whitewashed Israel’s genocide against 2.3m Palestinians in Gaza and underlying settler-colonial apartheid regime.”

— PACBI – BDS movement (@PACBI) May 1, 2025
they also reacted to the second show’s cancellation: “UPDATE: Jonny Greenwood and Dudu Tassa’s show at Hackney Church has also been cancelled
We reiterate our call for all venues to refuse to programme this complicit event that can only artwash genocide.”

Neither Greenwood nor Tassa have publicly responded to the news of the shows being called off
Their family had a nephew who was serving in the Israeli Defense Forces and was killed in the ongoing war against Hamas
Reacting to the controversy after last year’s Tel Aviv shows
Greenwood wrote: “I’ve been collaborating with Dudu and releasing music with him since 2008 – and working privately long before that
And silencing Israeli artists for being born Jewish in Israel doesn’t seem like any way to reach an understanding between the two sides of this apparently endless conflict
Greenwood concluded: “So: that’s why I’m making music with this band
what we do but I hope you now understand what the true motivation is
and can react to the music without suspicion or hate.”
PACBI said in a response provided to NME: “By performing in apartheid Tel Aviv while Israeli forces burned Palestinians alive in Rafah
Gaza – a fact he conveniently omits from his letter – Jonny Greenwood is knowingly complicit in covering up these atrocities
“All Palestinian/Arab musicians should refuse to act as figleaves for international artists crossing the Palestinian picket line – or for Israeli artists who have entertained Israeli forces massacring Palestinians
as Greenwood’s collaborator Dudu Tassa has repeatedly done.”
Greenwood and Tassa released the collaborative album ‘Jarak Qaribak’ in 2023
an Arabic title that translates as “Your Neighbour Is Your Friend”
The album was made up of traditional Middle Eastern love songs
recorded with a range of musicians playing modern interpretations
Radiohead have performed in Israel numerous times throughout their career and their show there in 2017 proved especially controversial
as well as Archbishop Desmond Tutu – asking the group to “think again” about their decision amid an ongoing and widespread cultural boycott of the country
Radiohead Fans for Palestine also wrote, in an open letter to Thom Yorke
“it is the Palestinian people who have asked you to boycott and if you’re going to justify your show in Tel Aviv it is them you should be addressing.”
At a solo show in Australia in October, Yorke clashed with an apparently pro-Palestinian protester
Right here,” he said in response to the heckler
“Come up on the fucking stage and say what you want to say
Meanwhile, Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien called for a ceasefire in Gaza last year. “Like so many of you I have found the events of October 7 and what has followed too awful for words.
anything that I have tried to write feels so utterly inadequate
Return the hostages,” he wrote on Instagram
The world’s defining voice in music and pop culture: breaking what’s new and what’s next since 1952
Mason Greenwood received mixed reviews for his performance in Marseille’s draw with Lille
as the ex-Manchester United star was branded “frustrating”
The future of the burned-down Greenwood School was before council on Feb
A written notice of entry for 102 South Government Ave
was on the table for debate and approval to allow the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department and city staff to come on the property to clean it up as it’s been deemed a health and safety hazard
The property in question is the old Greenwood School
which burned down last spring in a massive fire that also destroyed St
a shed and damaged a private home behind the school.
This is to get the first steps in remediating the property
explained corporate officer Brooke McCourt
She added she would be working with the building inspector and bylaw enforcement officer on this matter and if this gets passed
they will send a notice to the property owner of the notice to set a date when the city can enter the property to assess it.
“I know there are some concerns about going onto the property because of the asbestos that is known (to be there),” McCourt said
it’s still up in the air what will happen with the actual report
you can put a notice of remediation on that property and go from there.”
Councillor CJ Rhodes said the community should have an explanation as to why this property hasn’t been cleaned up
He also asked why the city is being tasked with entry and remediation
but wanted to know why the city has to take this on
“I’ve been asked by many people why there has been no action since the fire and the fences have been put up,” he said
“I also have a lot of concerns over our ability to do it and I’m sure it’s an enormous cost to do anything on that property right now.”
The site poses a health and safety risk to the city because of both asbestos and parts of the building falling down
If the city doesn’t move toward some sort of action and continues to do nothing
it could be potentially libellous for the city
“It’s kind of like we are turning a blind eye and leaving it alone
even though it’s private property,” he said
“As long as we are in the process of trying to get it fixed or try to get the hazard taken out
it will wash the city of any liability if something were to happen on the property.”
The city already has a report on the asbestos
citing it as a medium-to-high health and safety risk
Rhodes voiced concerns about the cost of removing asbestos
citing a friend of his who ended up paying around $38,000 to have asbestos removed from his private home
He could see the cost for the property in question costing up to $500,000 factoring in the square footage of the building.
And they still have to clean up the rest of the property
he voted in favour and the motion was carried unanimously.
Request for monthly accounts payable report approved
Deputy Fire Chief designated as fire inspectors
Chief Roy Terashita and Deputy Chief Pat Sheppard were given the designation as the city’s fire inspectors and fire investigators.
Along with these designations comes a plethora of training which will start with the mandatory Office of the Fire Commission course being released later this month
adding new legislation requiring the city to have fire inspectors and fire investigators as per the province’s Fire Safety Act
Once Terashita and Sheppard are well into their training and application of service
a succession plan will be identified to start training the next generation of fire inspectors and fire investigators
Fire protection a priority in city’s strategic plan
Mayor John Bolt and city councillors unanimously voted to conduct a full-service review and eventual master plan development that will be integrated into the city's corporate strategic plan
asset management system and allocated resources through the annual budgeting process.
These planning documents drive the budget allocation process and ensure that the council is spending in a strategic manner to achieve service quality objectives.
The service review and master plan will have town halls and community consultations attached to them
as per the city's communication commitments
and per the recently announced communication strategy

The City of Greenwood is proactively stepping up its fire inspection efforts in 2025 to ensure full compliance with the new Fire Safety Act recently passed by the Province of British Columbia's legislature
With approximately 40 commercial buildings within city limits
each structure will need to undergo a thorough fire inspection to meet the stringent requirements laid out in the act
City of Greenwood personnel will work together with the dedicated members of the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department
they will meticulously assess every commercial building using a comprehensive decision matrix that categorizes each structure as low
This risk-based classification system will enable inspectors to tailor the depth and scope of each inspection
concentrating their efforts on the highest risk buildings
the onus falls on the shoulders of commercial building owners to ensure their properties are fully compliant with all provisions of the current Fire Safety Act
This landmark legislation aims to safeguard the public from the myriad dangers posed by potential fire incidents
not only protecting the lives of occupants but also mitigating the risk of fire spreading to neighbouring structures
The City Council has announced the appointment of two new fire inspectors to enhance public safety and ensure compliance with fire codes and regulations
Chief Roy Terashita and Deputy Chief Pat Sheppard
have been selected for these critical roles
they will be responsible for conducting thorough inspections of buildings
and public facilities to identify potential fire hazards and work with property owners to address any violations or areas of concern
Terashita and Sheppard will undergo rigorous training to further hone their skills in fire prevention
Their expertise and dedication will be invaluable in educating the community about fire safety best practices and collaborating with other city departments to improve emergency preparedness
Both Terashita and Sheppard have also been appointed to start receiving training towards becoming the City’s Fire Investigators as well
the City reaffirms its commitment to protecting the lives and property of all residents and visitors by maintaining the highest standards of fire prevention and safety
Better community engagement is one of several key priorities Greenwood’s city administration will be implementing as it rolls out its strategic plan.
Residents were invited to the first of a series of Town Hall Meetings on Wednesday evening at the McArthur Centre to start talking and planning for the city’s immediate and long-term future
city council reached out to performance coach
policy and governance expert Christina Benty
whose experience includes being mayor and a city councillor for Golden
with some pointing out others wanted to come
Admitting the announcement was short notice
CAO Dean Trumbley apologized and explained city staff have been busy with several projects
adding better communication systems with residents is among the priorities council is working on
Starting with announcing this is the first of what is planned to be regular workshops with the public
as well as announcing the first of a series of Coffee with Council sessions starting Jan
Benty started the presentation by explaining that she
council and city staff had already been in a series of workshops helping to identify issues at the administrative level
They called her because after her nearly 12 years in local politics in Golden
she’s learned a few universal truths about local politics she wants to share with other municipalities to help reinforce the relationship between citizens
Benty said governance is more than just council meetings
it’s about building a community that has a long-term future with a strategic plan
officials and staff to prioritize what is important and look at some hard numbers
Elected government's main goal is to plan for the future
by making decisions now that will help guide future administrations and safeguard assets
Making promises like low or no tax increases are great for an election promise
but all parties have to ask themselves if it’s feasible for long-term goals
A strategic plan is being made for Greenwood
and these workshops have a twofold purpose: to keep the public informed of progress
as well as gather feedback on priorities.
“I’m part of a larger project of the whole asset management that we are doing here in Greenwood,” she said
“I’m a social scientist by trade and I am really interested in how municipalities make decisions and what’s the goal of local governments in our minds and why as citizens
folks need to be paying attention because it matters to local government because it’s the organization that is closest to the citizens because it oversees what they use on a daily basis.”
Another observation she shared is almost all politics are local
pointing out the most immediate services are handled at the local level
“If the federal government disappeared today
you wouldn’t notice for maybe a month or two,” she said
likely when you go to use a public restroom and flush the toilet and it doesn’t work
She admitted Greenwood has had issues with asset management over the years
but pointed out that is a common problem across all municipalities in Canada
One mistake many make is people get elected on a platform of a few issues
they are faced with managing a lot more than what they were campaigning on
then breaking down and it’s left to successive governments to pick up the tab and get those assets back up to standards.
Another issue is not having a clear idea of the resources that are at the disposal of a community
Which is why Greenwood is undergoing an asset management plan
how it’s being managed and what can be done to make sure it’s there for the long-term
“We are looking at this and it’s likely it will be tough numbers
but at least you will know where the city stands right now and what needs to be done for the short-term and long-term,” Benty said
Stronger communication policies are also essential
to help people find reliable information rather than rumours
Governance and citizens are going to have to work out a system that reaches across all forms of communication: print
phones and webpages because people communicate differently
They need to figure out which ones are most effective.
she encouraged people to ask questions and provide comments
One that was a common theme was infrastructure planning
with a few pointing out a pattern of projects being started – specifically sewer and water and flood mitigation – then in three or four years being dropped or stalled.
Benty agreed that there is a perception of a disconnect between citizens and governance
but that is often because the parties stop talking to each other directly
Governance and citizens have to keep communication open throughout the entire process
reiterating that there are three components: residents
elected officials and city staff that have to work together.
All communities want the best value for their taxes and lifestyles
but citizens and community governments have to be realistic and work with what assets they have
The second in a series of interactive Town Hall meetings brought about 20 people
all of city council and CAO Dean Trumbley to the McArthur Centre on Thursday evening to talk about local government
community services and the roles citizens have in shaping the future of their communities
Leading the discussion was performance coach
whose experience includes being mayor and a city councillor for Golden for a total of 12 years
She and council and city staff have been working on a series of workshops since late last year to identify issues at the administrative level
Jokingly referring to herself as a “recovering politician,” she reiterated that her experience with municipal and regional politics has taught her some universal truths about governance and is offering her insight to help residents and local governments understand their roles and responsibilities
Building on the discussions on roles and responsibilities from the first Town Hall meeting in January
Benty led a discussion on the progress the city has been making
While this was to reiterate that Greenwood does have some daunting long-term projects to maintain and improve services
she praised the proactive approach city administration has been taking so far to address them
a large portion of municipalities in the province have aging infrastructure they are trying to address,” she said
Greenwood is well ahead of most of them by looking at the assets you have
what needs to be repaired and creating a plan to best manage and maintain them for future generations.”
Benty added she was surprised more people didn’t attend
considering the advance notice and the point to these meetings were to help people meet and talk directly with city staff
This was also to reiterate that while local government may not be the top priority on people’s radar
it’s the one that has the most responsibility for the direct services they get for their tax dollars
the federal and provincial taxes residents pay are disproportionate to that reality
about 50 cents goes to the federal government
leaving around eight cents for municipalities.
“So you can see why we need to be realistic in what we want and crucially
maintain the assets we have and plan on how to replace them for future generations,” she said.
are campaigning hard to raise the tax requisition for municipalities even by two per cent to help fund improvement projects so they can meet coming housing density requirements
“A lot of communities like ours have aging infrastructure and are at capacity for water
but housing increases are being downloaded at the same time,” he said
“We can’t build more homes on what we have
Even getting an extra two cents out of that dollar would help us tremendously
which is why we are taking that demand to UBCM and the province to change the taxation and funding ratios.”
to exemplify the high priority water and wastewater has for residents and the city
Trumbley brought in a section of iron pipe that was pulled out of the ground after a recent water main burst for people to look at
makes up a good portion of the city water infrastructure
the 10 water breaks Greenwood recorded last year and the Calgary water main break last winter
Benty pointed to how this is considered invisible infrastructure because it’s literally out of sight for most people
so it is sometimes forgotten until it fails.
Trumbley added this is why the city is undergoing mapping the state of water and sewer to have permanent historical data of what they have and how old it is to better predict and anticipate when it will fail
giving priority to the highest probability areas for replacement with what materials and assets they have.
but so far this mapping tool has shown the high probability for failure areas to have been the ones that have actually had breaks
so we know mapping is working,” said Trumbley
with attendees sitting together with city councillors to talk about what services were important to them
the level of service they are getting now and what they want and what they can afford
Several other concerns and desires were brought up
including attracting more retail stores and restaurants
improving the kids park and building a youth recreation facility
These concerns are being recorded for administrative planning
with more Town Hall meetings being scheduled

Watching Miss Fisher on film at the Sun Theatre in Yarraville in 2020, at an event organised by Sisters in Crime Australia
seated next to Kerry and surrounded by her fans
Kerry died last week after suffering ill health for a number of years
The tributes are beginning to flow in from across the world from her many fans and followers
She has left us a great legacy in the form of her many books and our memories of the author herself
In 1989, I had the pleasure of meeting with Kerry shortly after the publication of Cocaine Blues
the first in what would come to be the Phryne Fisher series
I well remember suggesting that it would make a great period crime drama
Kerry and I first met in Mietta’s restaurant
where we sat at a small table in an elegant art deco bar
how she had been trying to write a novel about highwaymen
but had been persuaded by her then publishers
She had at some point written a thesis about the strikes on the Melbourne wharfs in 1928 and 1929
and had read every newspaper she could find
so she already had the perfect historical backdrop for a crime novel set in the period
The idea for Miss Fisher came to her on the tram going home
When it was later suggested that her charming female action hero might bear some similarity to the Saint or James Bond, Kerry trenchantly responded with the comment that Phryne “had fewer product endorsements and a better class of lovers”
Kerry was always a stylish writer and Cocaine Blues opens with brief first paragraph that does not waste time in getting the story moving:
Over the general exclamation could be heard the shrill shriek of Madame St Clair
It was with great glee that Kerry informed me that Madame St Clair’s exclamation was a direct steal from The Adventures of Tintin
as created by the Belgian comic artist Hergé
at our next meeting Kerry presented me with her French edition of Les Bijoux de La Castafiore (The Castafiore Emerald)
The anecdote reveals not only the eclectic range of Kerry’s sources (and the fact that she read French and was something of a polymath)
in her care for the waifs and strays that she encounters
not forgetting that Kerry was a barrister who worked full-time as a criminal defence lawyer for Legal Aid
there were relatively few Australian crime writers being published
The crime writing scene now is very different
Carmel Shute from the Australian chapter of Sisters in Crime informed me that over 150 crime fiction and true crime books by women will be published in Australia in 2025
It is testimony to the increasing popularity of a literary form which women have embraced as a way to tell the stories that matter to them
Quite a few of those books sit within what has often been characterised as the “cosy” genre: a subgenre of crime fiction to which Kerry’s crime fiction certainly belongs
compared to the kind of “gritty” crime fiction that wins accolades
This has obscured the achievement of crime fiction such as Kerry’s
in which historical and contemporary social issues are reflected back to us in ways that give us pause
even as they are presented in a form designed to entertain
This is Kerry’s legacy: a wealth of entertainment with a heart
Her novels are provocations to care about social justice
even as her creativity will continue to inspire
Correction: an earlier version of this article mistakenly stated that the Sisters in Crime Australia screening was in 2022.
