BarrieNewsR.I.D.E. snares allegedly impaired driverBy Cheryl BrownePublished: May 05, 2025 at 8:42AM EDT

A 62-year-old Oakville man is facing charges after being stopped by OPP during patrols in Gravenhurst
Officers say the vehicle committed a traffic infraction on Phillip Street around 3:30 p.m
leading to a traffic stop and the arrest of David Horton
He’s been charged with impaired driving and careless driving and will appear in court May 27th
Police say 37 drivers have already been charged with impaired driving in Muskoka this year
the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is urging motorcyclists and drivers to avoid behaviours and actions that caused or contributed to last year’s historic 57 motorcyclist deaths on OPP-patrolled roads
improper passing and driver inattention were leading causes or contributing factors in last year’s motorcyclist fatalities
The 18 riders who were not at fault in the fatal collisions that took their lives are a stark reminder that even the safest of motorcyclists are vulnerable to motorists who fail to share the road safely with them
“2024 was a tragic reminder of what happens when motorcyclists and motorists drive aggressively
or engage in careless behaviours when sharing our highways and roads
Motorcycle season commands our absolute safest driving practices
heightened vigilance and adherence to traffic laws that are designed to keep all road users safe—especially vulnerable motorcyclists and their passengers,” according to Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Thomas Carrique
“With the longer days and warmer weather
there will be more motorcycles on Ontario streets and highways
Last year’s devastating losses serve as a stark reminder to motorists and motorcyclists alike—stay alert and follow the rules of the road to create a safe environment for everyone,” according to Ontario Solicitor General Michael KERZNER
we all share the responsibility to follow traffic rules and ensure our roads are safe for everyone
Our government will continue to combat aggressive and unsafe driving by enforcing mandatory license suspensions for stunt driving and a zero-tolerance policy for impaired driving
Reckless drivers who endanger lives must face the full consequences of their actions,” added Ontario Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria
Riders between 25-34 years of age accounted for the highest number of motorcyclist deaths (15) on OPP-patrolled roads in 2024
followed by riders in the 65-74 age group (12)
Motorcycle Safety Awareness Week runs from May 1-7

The Town of Huntsville will not have to cover interest rates in order to partner with Muskoka Futures to offer incorporated physicians a prime rate loan
the Town’s General Committee heard a deputation from David Brushey with Muskoka Community Futures Development Corporation (Muskoka Futures) regarding a physician recruitment incentivized loan program
The presentation included a request for the Town to consider covering the interest costs
The move is one more incentive council asked staff to investigate in order to attract more physicians to the area
Staff returned to the Town’s General Committee on April 30 and noted that covering the interest costs would not be necessary at this time
“Through conversations with Muskoka Futures
it was noted that a partnership did not require financial contribution from the Town in order for FedNor to approve lower-rate loans for physicians,” according to Lauren MacDermid
Muskoka Futures can offer prime rate loans to local physicians with medical corporations
She said staff would promote the loans as part of its physician incentive recruitment package
“The goal of the current physician incentive program (which provides financial incentives in exchange for a five-year service commitment) is to recruit ten family physicians to address immediate healthcare needs in our community
there may be additional partnership opportunities with Muskoka Futures related to this program
Future partnership opportunities may include a financial commitment from the Town which would need to be approved by Council at that time,” noted MacDermid in her report to committee
She also said the loans will be available to existing physicians as part of retention incentives
Deputy Mayor Dan Armour called it a good news story and asked how big a loan physicians with incorporated medical practices can receive
who has been working on the physician incentive program along with Councillor Bob Stone
said when he first met with Brushey he was told the loans could be as high as $200,000 or $300,000 “which is exciting for us because that would fit into people that want to expand a clinic or open a clinic and it’s a win-win
but they currently have a lot of money in the bank
and they know that doctors are pretty reliable partners
Morrison also said the Muskoka Futures loan program is available to the entire district
and although there hasn’t been an uptake by other municipalities

The Town of Huntsville is advising that change room renovations at Huntsville’s Centennial Pool are set to begin June 2nd
with upgrades focused on accessibility and a general refresh
The work is expected to wrap up by the end of August

The town is encouraging visitors to come swim-ready and reminds residents of nearby beaches as an alternative
The Liberal Party under Mark Carney fell just short of the majority they coveted and were expected to get
got thrown to the side of the road.
Pierre Poilievre campaigned on the need for change
with the largest turnout for a federal election in many years
getting rid of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was change enough
They saw positive signs in his election platform
that he would move the Liberal Party away from the clutches of the far left
and back to its traditional place on the centre left of the political spectrum
They liked his non-confrontational style and partly because of this
they believed him best suited to deal with job number one and that is the threats to Canada from the Trump Administration in the United States
Canadians did not give the Carney Liberals the strong mandate they wanted
my view is that the Carney Government should act like they have a majority
no other minority party in the House of Commons
is going to force an election in the foreseeable future
they will pay a huge price at the polls.
Canadians have chosen Mark Carney to be that leader
He needs to be able to exercise that mandate without being held hostage by the NDP or the Bloc Québécois.
One of the strange outcomes of this national election is that the political party that came second won more seats than parties in previous elections needed to form a majority government in Canada
Pierre Poilievre and his Conservative Party increased their seat count in Parliament considerably
and they also increased their popular vote across the country
It may even allow him to hang on to his leadership in spite of a Tory penchant to scrap leaders who miss winning the big prize.
Poilievre has made it clear that he intends to stay on as Conservative Leader and a Conservative member in Alberta has already agreed to step aside in a safe riding to get him a seat in Parliament.
Whether that happens or not depends first on his elected caucus
That may not be a slam dunk for Poilievre because
the caucus will have the opportunity to vote in a secret ballot as to whether they want him to continue as leader.
elected Conservatives are publicly supporting Poilievre
another outcome could well be achieved behind closed doors
Because this election was lost for the Conservatives by Pierre Poilievre and his campaign team and not by anyone else
almost every poll showed that Poilievre was the problem
said they liked the Conservative Party platform but could not vote for its leader
and a little too much like Donald Trump.
Poilievre’s own campaign people finally saw this as their last two weeks of ads completely ignored Poilievre
The Montreal Gazette recently had a headline that read
Poilievre has to go.” I am not sure that I agree with that across the board
It is Pierre Poilievre who lost the election for the Conservatives
although there still may be enough alt-right Conservatives in the Tory caucus to see that he doesn’t. It is my belief that if Erin O’Toole remained as Conservative Leader after the 2021 election
the Conservatives today would have a majority government
Those Conservatives who can now decide who their leader will be going forward need to think about that
given the immediate challenges we now face from our neighbour to the south
is Pierre Poilievre the appropriate person to lead His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition?
a former colleague of mine and a political pundit
said this: “At a moment when the federal government is going to war with a powerful and determined enemy
Poilievre’s parliamentary tactics – denounce
delay and paralyze – would be welcome fodder for U.S
He is a man experienced at sowing and reaping the rewards from a divided enemy… Trump is a master at divide and conquer.”
the question to those who will determine Mr
it should not surprise anyone that incumbent Scott Aitchison was re-elected for his third term in the House of Commons (I believe he is now eligible for a pension.)
Aitchison is well known throughout Parry Sound-Muskoka
has a history of Conservative representation
Aitchison ran a strong campaign and was rewarded by many of his constituents
It seems apparent now that Scott Aitchison’s clear victory last Monday was due
to his ability to get his supporters to the polls
that Aitchison was a little more concerned about this election than he was about the previous two
The Liberal candidate in Parry Sound-Muskoka was Geordie Sabbagh
he had almost no name recognition until shortly before the election was called
This was made more difficult for him by some municipalities in the riding prohibiting election signs on public property.
his vote count of 27,656 was higher than Scott Aitchison’s vote count in both the 2019 and 2021 elections
My guess is that we will see more of Geordie Sabbagh in the future
a couple of other reflections from this election.
it was hard to miss the smirks on the biased faces of CBC anchors as they realized Pierre Poilievre would not be around to defund their network
which badly needs reform to deal with their rank partisanship.
I predict Green Party Leader Elizabeth May will become Speaker of the House of Commons in the next parliamentary session
I would be surprised if any other party would be willing to lose a vote to the speakership
May ran for it last time and didn’t make it
and Canadians have made their decision about who should lead them
beginning with dealing with threats from the Trump Administration and then bringing a more moderate and positive approach to challenges facing our country.
That is what Canadians expect and now it is time to deliver
Hugh Mackenzie has held elected office as a trustee on the Muskoka Board of Education
He has also served as chairman of the District of Muskoka and as chief of staff to former premier of Ontario
Hugh has also served on a number of provincial
including chair of the Ontario Health Disciplines Board
vice-chair of the Ontario Family Health Network
vice-chair of the Ontario Election Finance Commission
he has served as president of the Huntsville Rotary Club
chair of Huntsville District Memorial Hospital
chair of the Huntsville Hospital Foundation
president of Huntsville Festival of the Arts
and board member of Community Living Huntsville
Hugh Mackenzie has a background in radio and newspaper publishing
He was also a founding partner and CEO of Enterprise Canada
a national public affairs and strategic communications firm established in 1986
Hugh is president of C3 Digital Media Inc.
and he enjoys writing commentary for Huntsville Doppler
There is always a possibility that elected members from other parties could “cross the floor” and join the liberals
Carney said he won’t make a deal with the NDP but he might convert some of them
I agree with your comment on the CBC staff
Hugh Mackenzie: At present I find it tough to be a small ‘c’ conservative
One who just watched the pod perform a mass beaching
The Liberals realised that with Trudeau as leader
The cry went up and the man finally stepped down
I think I read somewhere that at the time the Conservatives had a 27 point lead
But they were mesmerized by the number and even when they began to notice the tail-lights on the bus carrying the Liberals to Ottawa
even wondered aloud: “Is it getting dusty back here?”
Even Pierre must have noticed that with Trudeau gone
A 27 point lead was melting away like a snowball in hell
I was as glad to be free of “Axe the Tax” as I was pleased to see Trudeau gone
You feel that PM Carney should lead as if he had a majority
I hope that he leads as if the entire house is on the same side
And our parliament should respond as a unit
I wonder if Pierre Poilievre can exist in such an environment
With no one to harass he’s ineffective
I hope that mass beaching doesn’t happen twice
you are supposed to be our voice in parliament
Why didn’t the Conservatives say something with 20 or 10 points still to go!
The man needs to join Trudeau on a beach somewhere
I am writing in response to Hugh Mackenzie’s thoughtful opinion piece on the outcome of Canada’s recent election
He is right: Canadians were ready for change — but not just change in name
constructive leadership over chaos and division
Pierre Poilievre campaigned on anger and confrontation
he also made himself the reason millions of Canadians refused to trust the Conservative Party with government
Canadians rejected a style of politics that thrives on rage clickbait
That rejection was not narrow — it was decisive
Recognizing the dangerous moment we are in — with the looming return of Donald Trump
and threats to Canada’s economic future — Canadians chose Mark Carney’s steady
Protecting our prosperity means expanding global trade beyond the United States
and defending Canadian democracy — is exactly what this moment demands
It’s not just that Poilievre lost the election
cynical style of politics he championed lost
Canadians sent a clear message: leadership must build
and unity are not accidents — they are choices we must make and protect every day
Mackenzie’s observation about Geordie Sabbagh’s strong campaign in Parry Sound–Muskoka
His strong showing reflects a growing movement of voters who want respectful leadership and serious solutions — and I believe we will be hearing more from him
Mackenzie that the Carney government should lead with strength
and serious nation-building — not endless division
while the Conservative Party ponders its leadership
they would do well to remember: winning votes with rage is not winning trust
I sincerely hope the Conservative Party chooses to return to the middle
because the angry right-wing version of conservatism we see today is not what most conservative voters want — and it is not what Canada needs
Despite following a pattern of short-lived Conservative leaders
Pierre Poilievre is determined to hold onto power after his election loss
who won the popular vote but lost the seat count
Poilievre lost both — along with his own long-held seat
he claimed some wins in his concession speech
highlighting a 41.3% popular vote — the party’s best since 1988 — and an increased seat count
Poilievre deserves the internal criticism he faces for squandering a historic lead and failing to adapt to changing circumstances.
His personal unpopularity is a major liability
with voters reportedly liking the party’s policies but rejecting him as its leader
High-profile rifts with Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Nova Scotia’s Tim Houston seem t underscore that the man is just not likeable
populist style a la Trump is out of step with a Canadian political climate that clearly favour competence and diplomacy
as exemplified by Prime Minister Mark Carney
many in the party realize that change is needed for the Conservatives to finally win an election
I’m pretty happy to see him stay on because I think it will strengthen the Liberal’s position but I can’t believe that the CPC doesn’t know that it can’t win with him
I agree with most of your points and you stayed objective for each candidate
I have watched Power and Politics and similar CBC shows and I find them to be very objective while covering all major parties equally
We need the CBC and professional journalism more than ever
In those instances (I’m thinking about the trucker convoy days)
calling out the truth is simply calling out the truth
Maybe handing out coffee and donuts to the trucker convoy people cost Poilievre his seat in the Ottawa area
Quisling?) distract from her corruption allegations
I also wonder if the myth of the American cowboy
self-made-man syndrome has been a bit tarnished
If I was younger and could choose an area of study to pursue in earnest
it would be to examine the differences in immigrant experiences from early to mid-last century across Canada
I wonder how different interpretations of those experiences affected Tommy Douglas and Preston Manning – differences in how immigrants were expected to make their way in the world
I don’t suppose anyone but myself would be interested
the ethos of “pull yourselves up by the bootstraps
no one is there to help you” and “help your neighbour survive in community/do unto others as you would have them do unto you” I suggest may lay at the roots of some of the resulting political/societal movements
If any of you readers could recommend books on the above subject

Huntsville High School Hoya Robotics team members and mentors at the FIRST championship in Houston
Huntsville High School students represented the community at the FIRST Robotics World Championship in Houston
securing funding through local sources to compete on the global stage
A group of Huntsville High School students recently showcased their STEM skills on the world stage, competing in the FIRST Robotics Championship in Houston
“We were all excited and proud to go on behalf of not just Huntsville
but the entirety of Muskoka,” said Jaccob West
a Grade 12 student and former build captain of the Huntsville Hoya Robotics team
inspiring the next generation of innovators
“It’s really nice to be able to work with people from all the (STEM) fields to really come together and show what a small community is able to do,” West said
the team had eight weeks to design and build a robot
where they learned they had a shot at advancing to the world championship
“We were really banking on the community to help us get down there,” West said
The team’s efforts were supported by businesses and individuals and they raised enough funds to cover airfare and other expenses. One company, Seal for Life
highlighted the importance of the business skills students gained during the fundraising process
“The thing that I love about this program is that there’s a spot for everybody,” he said
“We have kids who are learning technical skills … manufacturing
and programming … but there’s also all business skills as well.”
West and his teammates were “just in awe” by the scale of the FIRST® Championship in Houston, where more than 50,000 people from around the world
Many teams had significant corporate backing
but the Huntsville team remained undeterred
they had a bunch of backing from NASA and other big companies like GM
but we had the backing of an entire community,” West said
West said the group of students was cohesive and collaborative
on top of its systems and quick to reprogram code into the robot when necessary
“I was taking a step back this year and I saw our Grade 11 technician
“Seeing their face … it really showed how much it didn’t just mean to me or my mentors
West said the members performed exceptionally and gained valuable lessons
and we built a really good robot,” he said
“We were putting up our best scores that we’ve seen the entire season.”
The team thanks sponsors MBRP, Infra Pipe Solutions, and Seal for Life

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) is thrilled to be making incredible strides on the building expansion in Huntsville that will soon welcome Muskoka and Almaguin’s long-awaited Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine
construction progress has steadily continued at the Huntsville District Memorial Hospital (HDMH) site
some of 2024’s project milestones included site preparation
followed by pouring of the foundation and flooring
the construction of the super structure and roof was completed
exterior siding was in place and interior framing had started
mechanical and plumbing were completed and a major planned power outage facilitated connecting the MRI addition to the hospital’s power supply
the MRI cabin room was constructed and radio frequency shielding installed
drywall in other parts of the MRI Suite was ongoing
Chillers were delivered and installed in April with other ongoing mechanical work
The planning team is preparing for another major milestone with the arrival of the magnet on May 6
Next steps in construction include IT network cabling
and installation of millwork and other fixtures. Commissioning and testing of the MRI machine is the last phase of work
“The MRI addition is more than just bricks and mortar — it’s a powerful step forward in patient care,” says Harrison
the new MRI service will bring life-changing benefits to patients across the communities we serve in Muskoka and Almaguin
As a result of the new MRI service coming on stream
new MRI Technologists have been introduced to the MAHC team
and staffing in other areas such as scheduling and registration
environmental services and diagnostic imaging aides has expanded
Once opened with patient services this summer
the new local MRI service in Muskoka is estimated to save over 7,000 hours behind the wheel for patients
and spare more than 700,000 kilometres of travel to hospitals outside of our region for an MRI
Muskoka and area’s MRI service will complete 5,000 MRI scans locally every year
The HDMH Site at MAHC has been a designated District Stroke Centre since 2006 and is currently the only regional stroke program without an MRI under its roof to perform essential studies for patients presenting with critically time-sensitive neurological conditions

A recommendation from Huntsville municipal staff to increase remuneration for two positions on Huntsville Council was put on ice at the April 30 General Committee meeting
The recommendation presented by staff would apply to the next four-year term of council
which requires a Council Pay Review to be conducted every term of council
According to the staff report
the review cannot be done in the last year of the term and must comply with the bylaw
which sets a benchmark for council remuneration at the 35th percentile among comparator municipalities
The report is based on data from 11 municipalities used as comparators: Bracebridge
the deputy mayor and councillor positions fall below the 35th percentile
Staff recommended an option that would raise both positions to the 40th percentile and provide Consumer Price Index Adjustments each year (this year
recommended that the deputy mayor’s base salary increase from $28,789 to $34,603 annually and that the annual base salary for a Huntsville councillor increase from $26,082 to $28,470
thereby bringing the base rates for both positions to the 40th percentile
The proposed increases are independent of recent increases passed by the District of Muskoka
the base remuneration for the Huntsville mayor’s position is $59,310
which falls within the 65th percentile among comparator municipalities
the option recommended by staff in the report suggests that the remuneration for the position of mayor be ‘red circled.’
“With the Mayor position currently being compensated at the 65th percentile
that position would beRed Circled should Council adopt a target pay percentile that is below the 65th percentile
Should be [sic]Mayor’s position become Red Circled
there would be no increases or CPI adjustments applied to thatposition until its base rate meets the current pay percentile,” notes the report
Councillor Cory Clarke was the first to comment on the recommendation
“There aren’t many people in Huntsville that are seeing wage increases right now
and I don’t think that we should see it here either.”
Cory said too much emphasis is being given to other communities while councillor wages should reflect what’s happening in this community
“As I look to the comparators that you’ve used
council increases should reflect on what those in our community are being given for raises,” he said
and that’s how it’s always been done,’ but it doesn’t have to be… the only increase that I would be willing to look at would be an annual cost of living increase at this time right now
I wouldn’t support any of the other options listed.”
She said she would be comfortable just giving the next term of council a cost of living increase
Councillor Monty Clouthier concurred with both Clarke and Renwick
He said he agrees with increasing council remuneration by the cost of living but said he’d also like to see health benefits considered
that’s something that I think should be considered,” said Councillor Scott Morrison
Deputy Mayor Dan Armour said he understood his fellow councillors’ stance
but said he is concerned about falling further behind
“If we don’t try to play a little catch-up now
we’re talking six years from now… and I hate to see the taxpayer at that time be hit with a huge increase
so I think we need to really think about where we want to be or where we want to set the next council in relationship to the other communities in the area because we are the biggest town
it’s almost a full-time job… and I’m sure my fellow councillors around here are receiving emails all through the day and night
that you have to attend to…we put in a lot of hours,” said Armour
adding that it’s always a tough discussion to increase compensation for your position
He told councillors that if they sit down and figure out what their compensation is when compared to the hours they put in
“you’re probably below minimum wage.”
Councillor Jason FitzGerald said the discussion is never an easy one
He said he believes the demands on the position of deputy mayor are greater than they’ve ever been
He said when the Town experienced a cyber incident
“we seriously had a consideration of looking at IT provided by the Town rather than personal laptops… for reasons of security
So I don’t know if that becomes a consideration in remuneration as well
but I don’t think I’m prepared to support anything today.” With Mayor Nancy Alcock
he said that the discussion and decision should be made with a full council present
Morrison said he supports cost of living increases as well as an increase to the deputy mayor’s position
“And I actually think an increase at this table is more warranted than the increase at the District table based on most of our work is done in our wards
so I think I’d love to see a full discussion when we come back,” he said
adding that staff could also be asked to bring back other items for discussion such as a smaller or phased-in amount
“We all spend more time at these jobs than part-time,” said Councillor Clark
but added that none of the councillors are in it for the money
“We do it because we want to improve our communities
I agree with Councillor FitzGerald; I think it’s important to get full council’s interaction on what they feel,” he said
while also adding that he still does not believe he will change his mind
council voted in favour of deferring a decision and asked staff to further explore things like health benefits and IT support
and return with an updated r to General Committee in May
You can find the staff report HERE (pdf)
Its a funny thing that council and government keep getting raises in this economy
Pretty much most of huntsville havent received a raise in years and im talking about the bigger companies
How can we keep up with paying these raises and increased property taxes
If you are trying to get people to move out of Huntsville your doing a good job
Between the government and town council the poor and middle class are not able to keep paying their bills
Finally some fiscal responsibility when it comes to salary .The District discussion was a a farce
Stay off the Council Merry-go-round with the other municipalities
It is bad enough You have to engage in bidding wars to compete for competent staff with other towns and the District

In the midst of an election and despite tariffs and uncertain economic times
three members of the Huntsville business community appeared before Huntsville Planning Council on April 16 to seek planning approvals for new initiatives
First, Daiken North America Ltd. announced it would be expanding its operations with an estimated $70 Million investment—one that was touted as breathing new life into the former Panolam facility
Then, MBRP representatives were also before Planning Council looking for initial planning approvals in order to add a powder coating spray line (pdf) to their existing facility
Local businessman Mike Harrower was also before Planning Council looking for preliminary approvals for an amendment to the precinct on the old MTO property (pdf) to add transportation services and warehousing as additional permitted primary uses on the property
Harrower told councillors that he’s planning to establish a courier service within one of the multi-unit commercial buildings on the property
He said it’s part of a wider initiative and told councillors he’d be back
Huntsville Mayor Nancy Alcock said the applications were music to her ears
She’s been reaching out to the business community to see how they’re faring in the current economic climate related to tariffs coming from south of the border and she is thrilled to see local businesses expanding and embarking on new ventures
which she said is not only beneficial for Huntsville but for the whole region
“I am in awe of our business community
that they’re making these decisions during such a challenging time,” she said
“Given the uncertainty with the tariffs
we’re having some fabulous expansions in our business community
MPRP has always been a good community oriented business and we’re really excited to see them expanding and staying here in Huntsville.”
“Daiken is investing millions into a struggling business that has now solidified its future for decades to come,” said Stone
“And Mike Harrower is always looking for new and innovative ways to expand his multiple businesses and we are so excited to help him,” he added

It was a major expansion announcement and one applauded by Huntsville councillors at their April 16 Planning Council meeting
which in July 2024 sold its Huntsville plant to Daiken & Itochu under the name of Daiken North America Ltd
will undergo an estimated $70 million expansion
this new investment puts new life in this facility,” said Senior VP and COO Al Stobbart
who said other areas were considered but Huntsville won out
“Before they invested in this facility
They were talking to a number of mill operations here
Stobbart said among the reasons for making the decision to manufacture a type of MDF board here was the abundance of a type of underutilized wood
He said the product that will be manufactured here is not particleboard or Oriented Strand Board (OSB) but a hybrid between the two
He said it was invented in Japan at the Daiken R&D centre
and the decision was made to manufacture the product here because this is where the market exists
Plant engineer Aiden Burgess said the product application will be mainly used for flooring and RV panels
Asked about employment by planning chair Councillor Bob Stone
Stobbart said the plant currently employs about 130 people and he anticipates another 10 people will be hired specifically for the new program
and probably 20 by the time the program is in full swing
Councillor Monty Clouthier said work at the plant was noticeably dying down but since the change occurred
“Al talks about the direct employment
it’s not just the direct employment but the contractors and jobs in getting the project built
This is as good a news as the G8 as far as I’m concerned,” said Clouthier
“There are a lot of blue-collar people in this town here and it’s a great news story
Thank you very much for bringing it to our town.”
‘How lucky are we that we have Daiken in our community?'” she said
I am so thankful that you’re coming in with expansion plans during these challenging times
So I can’t be more supportive; I am thrilled to death.”
Councillor Cory Clarke called it fantastic news
He said it is hard to believe that it has been 45 years since the plant first opened
and said he hopes Daiken is successful for the next 45 years in Huntsville
“It’s a big win for us in Huntsville
I would place it right up back in the 70s when Kimberly-Clark came to town
and what a difference that made in the 70s and the 80s and present day for our community
and I would put this expansion in that same light,” he said
adding that Daiken’s investment in Huntsville is appreciated
The project includes the construction of a new 152m² debarker building (with a maximum height of 17m)
Huntsville Council gave the project conditional planning approval. You can find the planning report HERE

Huntsville Council approved a change to the location and installation of the Unity Circle
it will be installed upright along the walkway between Trinity United Church and Town Hall
who has been championing the initiative along with Councillor Scott Morrison as a way of presenting Huntsville as a more inclusive town
the previously proposed location at the intersection on Dara Howell Way presented some challenges
She said there were concerns with both the cost of installation and its maintenance in a high-traffic area
Renwick said the cost involved in installing the Unity Circle on the ground was much higher than anticipated and said it would be a lot less costly to install it off the ground
Morrison said the price could have been brought down by using an inferior and less costly paint
but even people who were supportive of the project were not comfortable driving over it
Morrison said staff came up with the idea of installing it along the walkway
He also said they’d be working with municipal staff on a process to be able to honor some of the marginalized persons the community has lost
but for people to stop and take selfies right on the road is not as safe as walking down this path
and spreading the word around of us being an inclusive town,” said Morrison
“The location that we’ve looked at is actually directly behind the stone that has the land acknowledgment on it with the little moccasins,” noted Renwick
Councillors heard that the church had been consulted
with the exception of Councillor Cory Clarke
approved the new location for the Unity Circle as well as the modifications to the installation

Firefighters and emergency services were called to the scene of an early morning fire at Deerhurst Resort’s Antler Steakhouse Friday (April 25)
A blaze that broke out at Deerhurst Resort’s Antler Steakhouse early Friday morning (April 25) has been extinguished by fire crews
but the resulting damage is said to be extensive
Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department crews responded at 6:26 a.m
with more than 30 firefighters and nine trucks eventually arriving on the scene
with crews remaining on scene to conduct overhaul operations
putting out smouldering embers and ensuring the area was safe
The damage from the fire is estimated to be between $3.5 and $5 million
“The cause of the fire is under investigation and may be determined once the scene is released to the investigation team,” the town said
spoke with the Huntsville Forester at the scene while fire crews continued working to contain the blaze
He said the fire was reported around 6 a.m
and the fire department arrived shortly after to take control
no people in the building at the time and the fire department’s been on scene ever since,” Buwalda said
we’re just trying to assess what we have to do next.”
Smoke could be seen pouring from the structure and the smell of burnt wood was intense
While drivers passing by did so cautiously
officials asked the public to stay away from the area
the roof and part of the side of the building were visibly charred
An aerial ladder fire truck swung overhead with firefighters in the bucket
working to put out remaining hot spots from above
confirmed the fire at the steak house in a press release issued earlier this morning
“A fire is currently taking place at Antler Steakhouse at Deerhurst Resort,” he said
“Emergency services and local fire crews are on-site and actively responding.”
The building — home to both the Antler Steakhouse and the Highlands Golf Pro Shop — is a loghouse-style restaurant with cottage-like features
It overlooks the Deerhurst Highlands golf course and the canal between Fairy and Peninsula Lakes
the closure of the shop between April 21 and May 10
was part of the resort’s annual seasonal refresh and not tied to any larger renovation work
“We’re very grateful for the work of all the emergency services,” Buwalda said
He also expressed appreciation for the support the team has received and said the incident will “certainly have an impact” on operations moving forward
