The CAMI plant in Ingersoll was retooled to produce BrightDrop Zevo vans and became Canada’s first full-scale EV manufacturing facility
Photo from the CAMI assembly plant's website
General Motors will begin laying off hundreds of workers at its CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ont.
starting Monday — a major economic hit to the town of 14,000
The plant, which employs around 1,200 workers, produces BrightDrop electric delivery vans
GM says a slowdown in sales and high inventory levels have forced the company to pause production
Some limited production will continue into May
but operations are expected to fully stop until October
the company says it will operate at reduced capacity
GM said it remains committed to the CAMI plant and the future of BrightDrop
and will “support employees through the transition.”
The announcement comes amid broader concerns in Canada’s auto sector
as companies brace for the impact of US tariffs and shifting consumer demand
“Certainly it’s not a good day for the town,” said Brian Petrie
“Our thoughts go out to the employees who are affected
General Motors has been a great community partner since 1986
Petrie told Canada’s National Observer the layoffs will not only impact workers directly employed by General Motors but will also affect local suppliers
“This will affect our community — GM is our largest employer and taxpayer,” he said
Petrie said the layoffs are linked to overproduction and weak sales
he said the economic uncertainty created by those tariffs is making it harder for businesses to invest
He added that the town is working with federal and provincial partners to support affected workers
Prime Minister Mark Carney called the layoffs at GM’s Ingersoll plant “deeply painful news” for workers and the broader Canadian auto industry
“My government is fighting to defend our auto sector
protect our workers and build our supply chains in Canada,” Carney said in a statement. “We've made it easier for affected workers to access support
Carney said his team has been in regular contact with Unifor president and that the Canada–US cabinet committee has developed plans to ensure Canada is prepared to negotiate with the United States from a position of strength
regardless of the outcome of the upcoming election
“We will fight every day for the workers who build this country.”
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also expressed concern over the layoffs
saying he had spoken with Unifor Local 88’s GM Plant Chairperson and reaffirmed his party’s commitment to protecting auto jobs
He blamed US President Donald Trump’s tariffs for putting Canadian workers at risk
“We must strengthen our economy and end our reliance on the United States.”
The federal and Ontario governments each committed up to $259 million in 2022 to support General Motors’ investment in its Oshawa and Ingersoll plants. The funding was part of a larger $2-billion plan by GM to boost electric vehicle production in Canada
A key part of that investment was focused on launching BrightDrop, GM’s electric commercial van brand. The CAMI plant in Ingersoll was retooled to produce BrightDrop Zevo vans and became Canada’s first full-scale EV manufacturing facility
At the time, it was projected the CAMI facility would produce up to 50,000 electric BrightDrop vans annually by 2025 to meet expected demand
In 2022, it was projected the CAMI facility would produce up to 50,000 electric BrightDrop vans annually by 2025 to meet expected demand. Photo from the CAMI assembly plant's website. But the BrightDrop vans have now faced a sluggish US market
The company has reportedly offered steep discounts to clear inventory
with hundreds of unsold vans now sitting in storage lots across North America
Concerns also grow that a Trump administration could cut EV incentives
says GM’s decision to pause and reduce production at the Ingersoll plant is devastating for workers
“General Motors must do everything in its power to mitigate job loss during this downturn, and all levels of government must step up to support Canadian auto workers and Canadian-made products,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne in a statement.
The union is urging governments to use this moment to support Canadian workers
strengthen the country’s industrial strategy
and prioritize buying Canadian-made products
Unifor said recent actions by US President Donald Trump — including new tariffs on Canadian-made vehicles and auto parts — have caused major disruption in the auto industry
adding pressure to an already uncertain market
“The reality is the US is creating industry turmoil
Trump’s short-sighted tariffs and rejection of EV technology are disrupting investment and freezing future order projections,” Payne said
“This is creating an opening for China and other foreign automakers to dominate the global EV market while the North American industry risks falling behind.”
Payne warned that the global shift to electrification is accelerating
could mean losing control of the industry’s future
Abdul Matin Sarfraz / Canada’s National Observer / Local Journalism Initiative
a national effort to not just buy the excess inventory of Brightdrop vans
but to purposefully switch out combustion vans could really help keep production going
These are very practical commercial vehicles
There are how many public sector maintenance and construction fleets among the federal
provincial hydro companies and city engineering departments alone offer a huge captive market with enough permanent demand
to form the largest customer base keep Brightdrop and other commercial EV makers going for years
This is what the transition should look like

reduces BrightDrop EV production at CAMI Assembly Plant
INGERSOLL—The news of General Motors' decision to temporarily halt and then reduce production of the BrightDrop electric delivery van at CAMI Assembly Plant is devastating for Unifor members
“This is a crushing blow to hundreds of working families in Ingersoll and the surrounding region who depend on this plant,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne
“General Motors must do everything in its power to mitigate job loss during this downturn
and all levels of government must step up to support Canadian auto workers and Canadian-made products.”
GM has informed Unifor that CAMI Assembly will initiate temporary layoffs starting April 14 with workers returning in May for limited production
production will temporarily cease with operations idling until October 2025
GM plans to complete retooling work to prepare the facility for production of the 2026 model year of commercial electric vehicles
the plant will operate on a single shift for the foreseeable future – a reduction that is expected to result in the indefinite layoff of nearly 500 workers.
Unifor Local 88 represents more than 1,200 workers at the CAMI Assembly Plant
where GM began BrightDrop production in early 2023
“Our members have endured so much — from retooling disruptions to months of rotating layoffs — and now they’re facing a major production slowdown and job loss,” said Unifor Local 88 CAMI Plant Chairperson Mike Van Boekel
“Global demand for last-mile delivery vehicles is only growing
and the pride to build world-class electric vehicles right here in Canada — all we need is the opportunity to keep doing it.”
Unifor is calling on all levels of government to seize this moment — to back Canadian workers
and support Canadian-made products with procurement dollars
“The BrightDrop electric delivery van is built in Canada by Canadian workers — it’s the smart choice for Canadian business
government agencies and for our economy,” added Payne
“Procurement and industrial policy go hand in hand
Now is the time for Canada to show leadership by investing in Canadian manufacturing.”
While GM has indicated it remains committed to the CAMI facility
the immediate future remains uncertain without stronger domestic support and fair market access
President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on Canadian-made vehicles and auto parts have sent shockwaves through the industry
and retreat from critical EV investment have created deep uncertainty across the North American auto sector.
Trump’s short-sighted tariffs and rejection of EV technology is disrupting investment and freezing future order projections,” said Payne
“This is creating an opening for China and other foreign automakers to dominate the global EV market while the North America industry risks falling behind.”
“Make no mistake — the world is moving rapidly towards electrification
“We risk surrendering our future unless we act decisively to support our own industry.”
Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector
representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy
The union advocates for all working people and their rights
fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad
and strives to create progressive change for a better future.

Australia thrifted a unique find down under: a letterman's jacket from an Ingersoll broomball team
Host Matt Allen hears the story of how Winkler tracked down the jacket's origins and also speaks to Allan Juett
a teammate on that exact broomball team. The letterman's jacket is made of yellow leather and blue mohair
and features the embroidered name "Wally" on the chest
and the crest of a 1970s-era broomball club from Ingersoll
"I had no idea what country it was from or if it was even real," he said
"I'd never heard of broomball."
It turns out that Ingersoll isn't too hard to find
"There's only one Ingersoll in the world
I discovered that must have been from this town in Canada," he said
Winkler took his search a step further and posted to a Facebook group for Ingersoll locals
a 16,000 km journey from where he bought the jacket
It didn't take long for "Wally's" family and friends to see the post and help solve the mystery that it once belonged to the late Wallace Clayton
he seemed like a fantastic bloke," Winkler said
"It's just awesome to see."
seeing his dad's jacket pop up on Facebook brought back a flood of memories
"He was a good dad for sure," he said
"I was really shocked to tell you the truth," he said
He donated some of his dad's belongings to a Goodwill second-hand shop in Ingersoll after his dad died
The jacket was too small for him or he probably would have kept it
He remembers his dad playing broomball on Sunday mornings when he was young
and having some beers with other players after the game was over
"It was a day for those guys to get out and enjoy themselves," he said
"I thought I was important because I was refereeing these older guys and that was kind of cool."
The 79-year-old from Ingersoll played broomball with Wallace for years
"We would get new jackets probably every five or six years
so we could show off that we belong to the club," Juett said
"[We] made lots of friends and enjoyed the friendship as much as the game."

24 days agoDuration 9:51General Motors has announced a temporary shutdown of its CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll
but is due to decreased market demand and high inventory levels of the BrightDrop electric vehicle
Mayor of Ingersoll Brian Petrie weighs in.Social SharingThe General Motors CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll
will shut down next month with plans to reopen in the fall at half capacity
The company said in a statement Friday that production is coming to halt as a direct result of the market and available inventory to build the BrightDrop electric delivery vehicles manufactured at the plant
"CAMI is making operational and employment adjustments to balance inventory and align production schedules with current demand," GM said in a statement
"GM remains committed to the future of BrightDrop and the CAMI plant and will support employees through the transition."
Two models of the BrightDrop Zevo are made on site and sales have lagged behind the competition
with numbers released by GM showing a total of 427 vehicles sold in Canada in 2024 and 1,529 in the United States
certainly for the individuals who are affected by it in our community," said Ingersoll Mayor Brian Petrie
Everybody has families and I know that there is an action centre being set up at Unifor to help people
and we'll be certainly doing everything we can through the town to work with our partners to support people."
The news follows the temporary closure of Stellantis's Windsor Assembly Plant in Windsor
The CAMI plant employs approximately 1,200 workers
the plant will operate on a single shift for the foreseeable future — a reduction that is expected to result in the indefinite layoff of nearly 500 workers," the statement read

Poilievre's statement took aim at U.S
saying he "is betraying America's closest friend and attacking our economy."
Conservative candidate Arpan Khanna, who is running for re-election in the riding of Oxford, which includes Ingersoll, issued a statement as well
"This situation goes beyond just a headline — it's a major loss for our community
Liberal Leader Mark Carney's statement issued late afternoon called the layoffs "deeply painful."
"My government is fighting to defend our auto sector
protect our workers and build our supply chains in Canada," he wrote
"We've made it easier for affected workers to access support
including waiving the EI waiting period."
said the "devastating" layoffs will have hundreds of people worrying about their future
"It's time to put workers and jobs at the heart of Canada's tariff fightback plan
To raise [employment insurance] so it actually covers the bills
and to launch the Build Canadian Buy Canadian action plan to keep more workers on the job," Singh wrote
Petrie remains hopeful that production will return to the plant in the future
"We have the best workforce in the world

“This is about slower sales and the tariffs will really hurt us,” Van Boekel said
The union and company will try to mitigate job losses with retirement and buyout packages to reduce the layoff total
“We think tariffs are a major factor,” Van Boekel said

will add more than $15,000 US to the price of a BrightDrop cargo van
It now sells for more than $70,000 in the U.S

The union said 450 will lose their jobs while GM Canada said the total will be closer to 500
GM played down the tariff impact in a statement Friday
saying the slowdown is a result of slow sales
GM Canada confirmed Cami is making operational and employment adjustments to balance inventory and align production schedules with current demand
GM remains committed to the future of BrightDrop and the Cami plant and will support employees through the transition,” the company said
“This adjustment is directly related to responding to market demand and re-balancing inventory
Production of BrightDrop and EV battery assembly will remain at Cami.”
Cami now employs 1,300 and also has an EV battery assembly plant on site
Ingersoll Mayor Brian Petrie said the long shutdown will have a devastating impact on the community
“My thoughts go out to the workers who are affected
It affects everything from the grocery store to the coffee shop and suppliers
Cami’s layoff and prolonged shutdown is the result of two factors hitting the plant
director of the Trillium Network for Advanced Manufacturing
The BrightDrop has not sold as well as GM Canada hoped it would and it has a high price tag in a competitive segment
But with the threat of tariffs adding to that cost
“Cami makes a niche product and there was not much demand for that product
But tariffs are adding extra cost and that will mean lighter demand than GM would like,” he said
GM is a company that runs plants as profit centres
said that although there are suppliers to Cami in Southwestern Ontario
production volumes were so low that even with a long shutdown

United Way Oxford officials celebrated their Valentine’s Day by officially cutting the ribbon to open the region’s newest transitional housing project
We apologize, but this video has failed to load.Try refreshing your browser, ortap here to see other videos from our team.Play VideoArticle contentThe agency’s staff
board members and volunteers gathered to celebrate the impending opening of the Ingersoll Light House
a fully furnished home with wraparound supports that will help Oxford County residents who are coping with homelessness or housing insecurity
With renovations wrapping up over the next few weeks
the home is expected to welcome its first residents in early March
“Valentine’s Day was the perfect day to celebrate — after all
this Ingersoll Light House is an example of the house that local love built,” said Kelly Gilson
the executive director of United Way Oxford
“From a significant funding grant provided by Oxford County to the financing assistance of the Ingersoll Community Foundation to the staffing commitment of our partner
through to the project leadership of Chuck Louttet from Vienwood Inc.
and the incredible generosity and support of so many local businesses
we have seen a community come together to make a difference to directly fund affordable
safe and supportive housing in Ingersoll.”
The “Light House” moniker was initially chosen for the United Way’s Tillsonburg transitional housing project
is intended to reflect how these homes will “provide a beacon of light and hope to guide residents to safety and to help people find their way.”
With the ongoing nationwide homelessness crisis
the need for local supportive transitional housing has been identified as a top priority by a number of area working committees and municipal governments
The six-bedroom Ingersoll home has been fully renovated and will provide an array of supports to its residents as they make that transition from homelessness or housing insecurity to stable housing
“We know that the ultimate solution to the homelessness crisis is housing
and the United Way Oxford is so proud to expand our transitional housing program to offer a six-bedroom home to better meeting the housing needs in Ingersoll,” Gilson said
“Oxford County’s commitment has made this new Ingersoll initiative possible
They understand that there is a need for housing
but also for the supports to be there to ensure that residents receive the assistance required to meet their individual needs that will allow them to get back on their feet and move forward to a better future,” Gilson added
The project budget of roughly $750,000 benefited from an Oxford County grant in July 2024
council voted to support three projects to create as many as 20 transitional and supportive housing beds in the region
providing a combined $1.15 million for development funding
$500,000 in annual operating costs and an additional $60,000 to support legal costs
The other supported projects included a 10-bed transitional housing project in Woodstock
towards permanent housing is getting someone in the right direction,” Ingersoll Mayor Brian Petrie said at the time

Unifor says hundreds of workers at GM’s CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll will be temporarily laid off on Monday
Layoffs come as GM temporarily suspends work on the EV delivery van
but vows it 'remains committed to the future of BrightDrop and the CAMI plant.'
but vows it ‘remains committed to the future of BrightDrop and the CAMI plant.’
It’s more bad news for Ontario’s auto sector
The union representing workers at GM’s CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll said Friday the company is laying off hundreds of workers starting Monday
temporarily halting work on the BrightDrop electric delivery van — and then reducing production of the vehicle
“This is a crushing blow to hundreds of working families in Ingersoll and the surrounding region who depend on this plant,” said Unifor national president Lana Payne in a press release
GM Canada confirmed the closure to the Star in an emailed statement
stating the company is “making operational and employment adjustments.”
“GM remains committed to the future of BrightDrop and the CAMI plant and will support employees through the transition,” wrote Natalie Nankil
the company’s director of corporate and internal communications
which represents more than 1,200 workers at the GM plant
said it was informed that temporary layoffs would begin on April 14
with workers set to return in May for “limited production.”
The plant would then temporarily shut down until October
at which point there will be “indefinite” layoffs of nearly 500 workers as the plant operates on “a single shift for the foreseeable future.”
Friday’s announcement is the latest layoffs to hit Canada’s auto sector this month
Up to 4,500 workers at the Stellantis plant in Windsor have been on a two-week layoff since April 3, the day U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff on global auto imports went into effect
According to industry experts as many as an additional 12,000 people in the auto parts industry were also off the job due to the Stellantis plant closures in Windsor and Warren
The announcement also comes a day after a report of GM temporarily laying off about 200 workers at it’s all-electric Factory Zero plant in Detroit
Nankil stressed that the temporary closure of the GM plant in Ingersoll was not related to Trump’s tariffs — which have also targeted Canadian steel and aluminum
“This adjustment is directly related to responding to market demand and re-balancing inventory,” Nankil wrote
along with his efforts to “weaken EV mandates,” in the press release
arguing Trump’s trade policies are creating uncertainty and putting North America’s electric vehicle industry at risk of falling behind
“Make no mistake — the world is moving rapidly towards electrification,” said Payne
This is not the first time the CAMI plant has temporarily shutdown since the start of Trump’s tariff threats
told the Star in early March that workers had been told to stay home for two weeks — again for “volume correction” and not the trade penalties
In Friday’s press release from Unifor
Boekel stressed that union members have “endured so much” and are now facing job losses
and the pride to build world-class electric vehicles,” he said
“all we need is the opportunity to keep doing it.”
On the campaign trail, Prime Minister Mark Carney described the layoffs as “deeply painful news” for the impacted workers and those elsewhere in Canada’s auto industry in a post on X
“We will fight every day for the workers who build this country,” Carney wrote
adding that he has been in regular contact with Payne
cabinet committee has prepared plans for “whichever government Canadians choose in this important election” to negotiate with the U.S.
echoing the brief comments he made after the committee’s meeting in Ottawa this morning
Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre said Friday he was “incredibly saddened” by the layoffs
so they can keep their jobs as we fight through this mess,” he said
“A Conservative government will push hard to put an end to these tariffs and get a quick but fair deal that protects our sovereignty and our economy.”

Bolstered by the success of its Tillsonburg Light House
the United Way Oxford is adding a second transitional home to its inventory as it works to support the region’s homeless
We apologize, but this video has failed to load.Try refreshing your browser, ortap here to see other videos from our team.Play VideoArticle contentThe Oxford County-based charity had been searching for a suitable property for several months before finding what agency officials described as a “perfect property” in Ingersoll.
“The ultimate solution to the homelessness crisis is housing — affordable, safe, and supportive housing. Based on the incredible success of our Tillsonburg Light House, which opened to residents in May of 2023, we know that this evidence-based best practice works to help people who have been vulnerable to homelessness or housing insecurity stabilize and work towards a better future,” United Way Oxford executive director Kelly Gilson said in a media release.
Transitional housing provides a temporary housing option with support services to help those experiencing homelessness eventually move into — and maintain — permanent housing. Serving as a step between emergency shelters and permanent housing, the local United Way’s transitional housing will be served by the Oxford County Community Health Centre, which will again provide “on-site wrap-around supports” that will help residents build their life skills.
“Thanks to the creative thinking and commitment to doing the very best we can to support those in need, our board made the decision to leverage our strengths and inspire others to invest where we can make an immediate and lasting impact. We were able to move quickly and, within only a few months, we were able to find and purchase the ideal house to become our new transitional home,” Gilson said of the Ingersoll property.
The need for this kind of supportive transitional housing in the Oxford County region has been recognized as a priority by a number of local committees, as well as area municipalities. The success of the Tillsonburg house provided a boost, as did Oxford County’s commitment to creating new transitional housing opportunities, agency officials noted.
The United Way Oxford was one of the recipients of an Oxford County grant in July that will help offset the costs of the purchase, as well as support ongoing staffing needs, agency officials added.
“Oxford County’s commitment has made this new initiative possible. They understand that there is a need for housing, but also for the supports to be there to ensure that residents receive the assistance required to meet their individual needs that will allow them to get back on their feet and move forward to a better future,” Gilson said.
In addition to the Oxford County funding and the United Way’s own investments, the Ingersoll Community Foundation is also involved in the project by providing a “generous mortgage to help make up the funding shortfall” for the home.
“The Ingersoll Community Foundation is pleased to have the opportunity to partner with United Way Oxford, the Oxford County Community Health Centre, the County of Oxford and the future residents who will benefit from this much-needed transitional housing project in Ingersoll,” said Steve Tait, secretary of the Ingersoll Community Foundation Board, in a release.
“We are very excited about the philosophy of collaboration that this represents and know that our partners have the experience and expertise to make a home for people in our county.”
With the purchase complete, a number of local volunteers, tradespeople and businesses will be working in the coming weeks to transform the home into a “warm, safe and supportive space for six individuals as they begin their journey from homelessness to a brighter, healthier, stable future.”
The new Ingersoll Light House is expected to open in the first quarter of 2025 after these renovations are complete.
“Housing is essential to individual and community well-being, and Oxford County is committed to ensuring everyone in our community has a place to call home,” Oxford County Warden Marcus Ryan said in a release.

The memorial also includes phrases in Indigenous languages — “all the people remember, thank you warriors” in the Oneida language and “all my relations remember, thank you warriors” in the Anishnaabemowin language — to acknowledge the contributions of Indigenous veterans, workers and farmers.
In the creation of the memorial , Indigenous language carriers from Atlohsa Family Healing Services in London were consulted by Patricia Marshal-DeSutter, the director of the Ingersoll and Area’s Indigenous Solidarity and Awareness Network.
The memorial was the work of local artist Deb Campbell based on a collaborative vision with co-artist Marshal-DeSutter, the Ingersoll legion and the town’s veterans’ crosswalk committee. In addition to the commemorative phrases, the design features a pair of powerful symbols — a dove and an eagle, which face the text as if speaking the words aloud. The dove is a well-known symbol of peace while the eagle represents love, courage and strength — core values from Indigenous traditions.
Framing the memorial are the colours of the four directions of the traditional medicine wheel — white, yellow, red and black. These colours represent the diverse races and communities that have served or lost loved ones in times of conflict. These colours also align with the four cardinal directions, helping ensure the memorial is inclusive and recognizes all sacrifices made for freedom, officials said.
“This memorial is a deeply thoughtful and original creation that reflects the diversity of those who have served and the values of unity and remembrance,” said BIA co-ordinator Virginia Armstrong, a member of the crosswalk committee. “We are excited to dedicate this tribute to our veterans, with the community, on Remembrance Day.”
The other committee members involved with the design and realization of the project were BIA board members Gordon Lesser and Adam Funnell, legion president Rob Made, Marshal-DeSutter, and public works staff members Rich Fleming and Doug Witiuk.
The dedication ceremony will take place on Nov. 11 at 10:30 a.m. The Ingersoll Downtown BIA is inviting all members of the community to take part in this “collective act of reflection and gratitude.”
